McCain Letter to Sinclair Broadcast on Preemption of Nightline

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) issued the following letter today to Mr. David Smith, President and CEO of Sinclair Broadcast Group, in response to the preemption of this evening's Nightline program:

I write to strongly protest your decision to instruct Sinclair's ABC affiliates to preempt this evening's Nightline program. I find deeply offensive Sinclair's objection to Nightline's intention to broadcast the names and photographs of Americans who gave their lives in service to our country in Iraq.

I supported the President's decision to go to war in Iraq, and remain a strong supporter of that decision. But every American has a responsibility to understand fully the terrible costs of war and the extraordinary sacrifices it requires of those brave men and women who volunteer to defend the rest of us; lest we ever forget or grow insensitive to how grave a decision it is for our government to order Americans into combat. It is a solemn responsibility of elected officials to accept responsibility for our decision and its consequences, and, with those who disseminate the news, to ensure that Americans are fully informed of those consequences.

There is no valid reason for Sinclair to shirk its responsibility in what I assume is a very misguided attempt to prevent your viewers from completely appreciating the extraordinary sacrifices made on their behalf by Americans serving in Iraq. War is an awful, but sometimes necessary business. Your decision to deny your viewers an opportunity to be reminded of war's terrible costs, in all their heartbreaking detail, is a gross disservice to the public, and to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. It is, in short, sir, unpatriotic. I hope it meets with the public opprobrium it most certainly deserves.

Saw a really fascinating documentary on Gore Vidal in high definition tonight on PBS. Got so immersed in it that I gave up switching over to CSI: MIAMI which was a rerun anyway.

Gotta hand it to my folks - he's 95, she's 80 and got lung cancer... they haven't had an adventure for years, got so bored, so they decided to sell their house and MOVE. Yipes - moving! I apologize for stirring up a hornet's nest by posting the web address for the chicken, again.  I was really just commenting on my friend's use of the phrase BK's Chicken Porn Site, and not on the site itself.  In fact, I hadn't even been to the website, because I was writing that post from work.  I only included the address, because I figured if I didn't, someone would ask for it. For the record:  I am not into chicken, I am not into chicken porn, and I can not stand Burger king!!

This is a picture of him from 5 years ago.  He was 56 then.  Looks a lot better than folks 10 years younger, or five, or ......  : )

RLP:  I apologize if it sounded like I was making fun of Bobby Goldsboro.  I really didn't mean it that way.  I was just so shocked to find out that he was still performing, because I honestly thought he had passed away....  And yes, RLP, he does look better than me.

I loved the performance I saw of Peter Gallagher and company in the Noises Off revival. Laughed my head off.

TCB - I think you SHOULD definitely come sing next Sunday - it ain't "opera" - nope. I want all the notes, but I'm looking more for a country sound, y'all. Think about it.

PennyO:  I assume, since you are still down south, that you are talking about a week from Sunday, and not the day after tomorrow?  Let me know all the details of the when and where, as well, as the phone number to set up an appointment.

Anyway - I hope MR BK enjoys Porgy and Bess.  I am going to watch BIG FISH which my sister just got at Blockbuster.

I saw a very funny movie on Showtime....called NOBODY'S BABY with Gary Oldham, Skeet Ulrich, and Mary Steenburgen.  It starts out a bit like RAISING ARIZONA but goes in a different direction.  Very funny, if you are looking for just that off center (on purpose) movie, and I really didn't realize Ulrich was that good.

Okay I'm confused.  It's a porn site?  The chicken does commands (like sit or jump).  What the heck else does it do that makes it porn?

I told the chicken to bark like a dog.  It got down on all fours and ran around the room, lifting it's leg on every piece of furniture.

George, you had to choose?  We saw both THE ROYAL FAMILY and CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF.  I thought Ned Beatty, former neighbour of ours and fellow Kentuckian was superb as big Daddy.  <SNIP>  Why choose?  Go see as much as you can!

I would have loved to see a lot more theater, but I was with my sister and niece and couldn't just go off by myself.  Also (and this was the main reason), funds were limited.  Oh well.  I'll just have to go again when I'm by myself and have much, much, much (that's three muches) more money!

I also was very impressed with Ned Beatty...also with both Brendan Fraser (very nice to look at, as well) and Francis O'Connor.

When GODS AND MONSTERS came out I read a review saying the obsession for Brendon Fraser  wasn’t believable since Brendon wasn’t attractive or appealing.  I could only thing WHAT AN  IDIOT.

Brendan Fraser isn't attractive or appealing?  Lordy, he could even get Gertrude Stein all aflutter!

Good Evening!

Laugh of the evening:  There's this little piece of underscoring right before the the finale of Children of Eden.  Very lightly scored for harp (keyboard), cello, flute, etc...  Well, I finally hear my lead-in cue, and.... WONK!!!!!  -I had forgotten to "foot patch" ahead from the previous song, which is "Ain't It Good"... which I play Gospel Organ on.  LOUD Gospel Organ!!  Thankfully, I caught my mistake about two notes in, but I swear I could hear some giggles on stage!  Needless to say, there were smiles all around the pit, and my conductor was very understanding and even giggled himself.   -After the show he told me that when he was on tour with  Lion King he had a similar incident - he should have come in on a soft string pad, but out came a gospel organ!  Keyboard Players, Unite!  In any case, it was nice to walk out of the theatre smiling - and feeling pretty good.  -And extremely apologetic to the cast as I waited with them on the Metro platform - but even they got a kick out of it.  

Also, my bit of "uncomfortability" has become less uncomfortable too.  Hopefully, everything will continue to remedy itself throughout the night.. and come morning.  The joys of recuperating.

Well, I need to put my feet up and get ready for bed... Two shows tomorrow.

OH!  I did get out to visit my nephew, and he did give me quite the wonderful hug - and even said, "I love you, Uncle Jojo!"  However, my three year-old niece, Alyssa has seemed to have grown very UNfond of me.  I tried to help feed her her afternoon snack, but as soon as I got within two feet of her, she started started crying(!) for her mom.  At first I thought she wanted to be picked up, but as soon as I tried to pick her up, she turned away.  She even ripped off her bib! - which was covered with lots of honeydew melon "remnants".  It was quite the dramatic moment.  Ah, well... Someday.  -Apparently, she was already cranky since she hadn't napped yet today, so...

I'm not going to reprint the letter here, since it's right up-page in these posts.  However, in a parallel idiocy, Bill O'Reilly is taking Gary Trudeau to task for having his comics character, B. D., become injured and losing a leg in the war.  Of course, O'Reilly is acting like it's brand new news that Trudeau has been protesting wars since Viet Nam.

Frankly, I've found Trudeau's depiction humane and sensitive.  There has been nothing outlandish in what he has done, other than the groundbreaking stance of showing a major character (who has been part of the strip since Trudeau's college days) injured in this way.

I acknowledge the fact that I'm comparatively right wing, peer wise.  But this and the Sinclair business has me shaking my head in bewilderment.

Der Brucer and I continue to have a wonderful time here in Rehoboth Beach.  This weekend is the Cabaret Festival, and we've already seen a couple of acts, both rather good.

The first was a woman named Suzanne Prichette, singing the hits of Aretha, Whitney, Etta James, Tina Turner...there was a heritage thing going on, but she was using that heritage to her advantage.  Her voice was smooth and clear, knowing where the notes were that she wanted to hit instead of scooping into them, and she gave her own twists into the interpretations.  The only thing that was lacking was her own accompaniment; her husband was queing up tracks from minus-one CDs.  I can only imagine how good she would be with a real band.

(This set took place in a sushi restaurant called Abstractions.  I hadn't thought der B would be interested in that kind of cuisine, but he enjoyed it a lot...except when he tried the wasabi straight, big mistake if sinus clearing.  And Ms. Prichette's vocals fit the environment very well.)

We followed this with a walk around town, down to the boardwalk and back.  Der Brucer checked out a couple of menus posted, finding places he'd like to try at a later date.  Then we headed over to the town's jazz club, Sydney's, to hear a vocalist named Eddie Bruce.  The advertising was all about his performing a set called "Newley Discovered," a tribute to Anthony Newley.  This led to a disappointment, however, because he switched to a different Tony, the one named Bennett.

As it turned out, his voice was probably better suited for Tony B. than Tony N.  Much better suited, in fact, almost ranking in the "impression" range.  I enjoyed it a lot, der B. a little less, mostly because he'd had his heart set on Mr. N.

(We've no idea what the food at Sydney's is like, but their drinks are heavenly, as are the desserts we had.)

The fest continues tomorrow....

I don't know from pizza right now.  We haven't gotten around to a pizza survey in our new home yet.  We're still working on Chinese and Mexican and Every Other Foodstuff.

I may have to learn how to make pizza on my own!

MAJOR crisis on Sunday: Alias is a top priority for viewing...so of course FoodTV is running a new one-hour special of Good Eats at the same time!  

It's all about Alton and his favorite seasoning, Salt!  For a full hour!  Opposite Alias!  Alton, Jennifer, Jennifer, Alton...Oh, bother!

Just returned from hearing DR MusicGuy playing a concert on a HUGE pipe organ. Dang, is he good!!

The concert took place in a truly swellegant private home. MusicGuy received a very enthusiastic standing ovation.

Well I just finished watching BIG FISH.  I liked it.  I didn't know too much about it going in.  I do like a lot of the performers and Tim Burton did one of my favorite movies NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS - so I wanted to like it.

A nice movie.  I can see why some people might not like it....it's not an everyone movie, but I liked it.  I don't think I need to see it again, though, but it is a nice memory.
