Everything is going wrong lately. By "everything" I mean gadgets, appliances etc. A few days ago my Fuji camera went wrong only a few months outside of the guarantee. Fuji's on-line standard repair quote was ridiculously high compared to the original price of the camera, so I took advantage of their repair upgrade where they supply a new camera at a discounted price and they supply labels to send the old camera back.
At the same time my DVD recorder has stopped recording. At least it's still under guarantee so I can take it back to the shop for repair - but it's another inconvenience and will probably take weeks before I get it back.
Then, this morning, I switched on my bathroom fan heater but it refused to switch off! So the bathroom was soon reaching astonomical heat levels. I had to switch the house electricity off, open the cover and disconnect the cables. It looks like the plastic device holding the switch pull cord has broken but there's no way of repairing it, so I've had to order a complete new heater from Amazon which should be here tomorrow.

We got our first snow of the season! :(

I'm not sure how much. There was supposed to be up to 5cms overnight. And maybe 2cms more this morning. Yuck!

The odd thing is that this will probably be the only snow for at least 2 weeks. because as of Friday the temps are supposed to get warm again (it is supposed to be like 50F+).

God morning, all! I didn't get to bed until around 1 AM so I slept late. I'm on my first cup of coffee and pondering the weekend's possibilities.

This is my first Thanksgiving in around 20 years where I have absolutely no plans and no invitations. I may spend tomorrow and part of the weekend catching up on movies. I'll spend some time on the Fandango site seeing what's playing around town.

DR Jose, the CD is the recording of Victor Herbert's cello and piano music. The songs won't be out until early 2012.

Today, I've got both ROBERTA and DEAREST ENEMY to play with. The apartment needs vacuuming and tidying up, so that's my first chore.

DR ELMORE what style of music IS Lysistrata Jones?

Very contemporary pop, I would call it, transformed into a theatrical idiom.. It sounds like stuff I would never listen to if I were twisting a radio dial. I can't imagine the characters in the show performing much else and I thought it worked really well here. Would I buy a cast album? I don't know.

I had a nice surprise this week.

Every few months, I do a Google of my father, who died in the late 1960s and every now-and-then I come up with something new about him that I didn't know.  [Everybody should try this.  It's a great way to come up with family histories.]

This week, I discovered that, back in 1919, Dad had written and copyrighted a song, "Encouragement".

[Actually, as a child, I recall seeing a torn copy of the sheet music in our piano bench, but I never paid much attention to it and I have no idea what became of it.]

In any event, I contacted the Library of Congress and the nice lady there is sending me a photocopy of the song.

Now, I just need to find somebody who can play the piano and sing it for me, possibly as a MP3 file.

BK?

Maybe I'll turn it into a music video.

I don't know.

...with a nice dash of hip-hop.

There are a couple of audio and video clips on the show's WEBSITE (http://lysistratajones.com/).

Having dinner with friends tonight. It's become a Thanksgiving Eve tradition among us. We find a place that lets us bring in a bottle of wine and then we sit for hours being thankful for each other's friendship through the years. In the past, it was at the best French restaurant in the country (actually the No. 6 best restaurant in the country according to Gourmet magazine), but that place closed and is no more, so we have tried a few other places since. Tonight is a Cajun/French/Texas place. Should be fun.

Oh my!!!  NO MORE GADGETS BREAKING VIBES!!!!

BK?

 ::)

Maybe I'll turn it into a music video.

That is a wonderful story.

DR Jane, that brutal, murder in Ashland of the young grocery store clerk is horrifying.

Yes, you don't expect such a thing to happen in Ashland. And the police say it was a random act, which is really frightening.

It is very upsetting & frightening.  I spoke with a friend today who's son used to work at Shop & Kart.  Of course he is upset but my friend's younger son was good friends with the young man.  I fear the murderer will never be found.

Just returned from the new Martin Sorcesse film HUGO. I watched it in 3D. (I don't normally watch a film in 3D as I find it difficult to put the 3D glasses over my regular glasses.)

I was very disappointed in the film and found it for the most part a bore. The previews seemed to be marketing it for children, but I don't think it is. I stuck with it to the end because of the aspect of the plot below.

SPOILER

The only interesting aspect of the film was the revelation of the Ben Kingsley character and the related material associated with the character.

END OF SPOILER

In my opinion is to save your money.

At the climax of the film the lights came on in the theater, the sound went off and film froze. They fixed it but we missed about 5 minutes of the plot. The audience received a free to see another film.

My firend, Cynthia, and her husband wanted me to come over to their house for dinner.  But I feel a little uncomfortable eating at someone else's house, and not knowing how my body is going to react.  So, we decided on a compromise.  They are bringing me dinner to my house, serving me, and then going home to their own dinner.

Craig is cooking most of our dinner for us. :D

What are you doing DR TCB?

What is Craig making for Thanksgiving?  Hopefully not tofurkey.

No way!! ;D

At the moment the kitchen smells delicious as he is baking the roll cake portion of a pumpkin roll.  For the filling he is substituting a vegan cream cheese.  I expect with tons of powder sugar & vanilla it will be tasty.

Well, we are having three Tofurkeys, so nyah, nyah, nyah.

LOL-I'm glad I'm not eating at your house ;)

I wasn't invited.

Hello-I guess I'd better think about packing for my trip to Buffalo in the morning.  I think this may be the first time in memory that snow isn't expected for the holiday weekend there.

Is that where your family is, Kevin?  I feel like I should know the answer to this, but I don't.  And I didn't hear about Brent performing in Buffalo this weekend.

DR elmore--I don't know if you've seen this clip of your friend Larry Blank conducting what seems like a student orchestra in Taiwan.   The concert features Lisa Vroman, Debbie Gravitte, Doug Labrecque and Rob Evan.  There are also clips of each singer doing a solo.  They're all terrific.

The church service that we attended tonight was a joint effort of 6 local churches and the Salvation Army.  Right inside the door, I was greeted by my friend Cindy who moved to Chicago several years ago.  She and her family are in town visiting her husband's parents.  After the service, our friend Judy from Miami University, who I had not seen for a couple of years, came over to talk.  And as we were about to leave, a former student Joanne grabbed me and said, "I saw you from where I was sitting in the choir!"  Joanne was in the library technology class I taught at Miami when Rob was a year old.

The minister who gave the homily concluded by breaking out in song, something Fr. Richard vows he will not be doing anytime soon!

Which French restaurant closed? Aquarelle? Chez Nous? Justine's? ???

;)

It was called Le Reve, which means the Dream, and it produced food that was dream-inducing. The chef-owner closed it to open Il Sogno, which is Italian for the Dream, and the food is, well, not dream-inducing. Not nightmare-inducing, either, just not all it should be.

Does anyone know whether or not they decided to pull the big balloons from tomorrow's Macy's Parade?

Haven't a clue & I don't plan to watch the parade.

Really?  You don't like parades, or you don't like Macy's?

I think I have only watched the Macy's parade a few times.  I've been to the Rose Parade several times & it was fun.  I used to watch it at home & haven't in a long while now.

I like Macy's Parade for the Broadway numbers, but last year was disappointing.  And they just said on the news that the balloons are in for tomorrow.

Wishes the Broadway numbers are better this year.

Me, too.  That's the only reason for watching the parade...in my opinion.

I've been watching the movie version of "A Chorus Line."  One thing that you can say about it is that they cast real dancers.  And they shot the dances in a way that you knew that they were all really dancing.

It's just too bad that the original choreography was not used. The opening sequence: Yikes!

As for the Broadway numbers during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, check Playbill.com for the listings. Some of them are not part of the official parade line-up, but are part of the network line-up. And since both CBS and NBC broadcast the parade... -Or is it ABC? Check your local listings. ;)
