Well, you've read the notes, the notes had both sound and music and a touch of Charmy, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently singing The Sound Of Moosic.
-
And the word of the day is: OBLATION!
-
A Very Happy Birthday to DR Jennifer!! ;D

And now, to bed. 8)

A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DR JENNIFER!!!!!!

How cool about the party, bk!! :)
-
Happy Birthday, Jennifer :) :) :)
-
I agree with DAW, How cool about the party, bk !!
-
I've listened to Evening Primrose at least once a week since I got it.
-
Well it's 3:30AM, I better go.
Listened to music all day yesterday, it was a good Saturday.
Hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday.
-
Just a few more posts and DR Sam will join the pantheon of HERO MEMBERS. :D
Formerly "HHW GODS."
-
Happy happy happy birthday to dear Jennifer!!!

Jose - The very real "Angie" theme was sung by Maureen McGovern and made it into the Top 20 back in 1979. ANGIE did debut within a month of the opening of SWEENEY TODD on Broadway, making the "love it seeks, love it finds"/"Lovett" word-sound connection a source of interest (to me anyway!). :) Obviously, it's a coincidence, but "Love it seeks" is after all an unusual, distinctive construction.
-
Futher hmmmm: per imdb, ANGIE premiered Feb 8, 1979
Per ibdb, SWEENEY TODD started previews Feb 6, 1979
-
Happy Birthday DR JENNIFER!
-
Charmian Carr - when we were doing THE SOUND OF MUSIC a few seasons ago, I bought her book "Always Liesl" for the lobby display. After the show, I read the book, and it really is a nice memoir. She seems like a nice lady, and the way she and MR BK met is MOST interesting!!
Charmian's sister also auditioned for TSOM - and in fact talked Charmian into going to the audition. Her sister also did some singing on the soundtrack - she may have done Kurt's high note in "So Long, Farewell" - and Charmian was a bit non-plussed when she AND her sister would get the same royalty check for the album.
-
And so for my TOD - I will ask - what was your first reaction to Christopher Plummer's outre performance as Captain Von Trapp in THE SOUND OF MUSIC? Your FIRST reaction......
-
Happy Happy Birthday to DR Jennifer!
-
Thanks to DRs George, Daw, Sam, FJL and Jrand!
So far the weekend has not been that good. I know material goods are not that important. But on Friday I had put this beautiful silky flower on my purple Guess purse. And when i came home it was gone. I tried to retrace my steps (only went one place). But could not find it. :(
Then i had a big fight with a family member.
But so far today is okay. Last night my niece slept over and did something so funny.
For some reason she decided to put one of my pillows on top of her body. I had my eyes closed and hear her saying, "oh how comfy".
No big deal.
Then i hear her say, "oh auntie it's like a sleeping bag". And i look over and she has put her whole body inside the pillow case (with pillow in it)! :)
-
HAPPY NATAL DAY DR JENNIFER!
-
And thanks to DR Laura.
Btw, the cake is gonna be some type of brownie cheesecake. I have not seen it yet but it is supposed to look great.
And tonight I am going to have bbq babyback ribs. And the dessert they bring is quite delicious. It is a brownie with ice cream and caramel sauce.
-
And so for my TOD - I will ask - what was your first reaction to Christopher Plummer's outre performance as Captain Von Trapp in THE SOUND OF MUSIC? Your FIRST reaction......
Jrand - have you listened to Donald's Radio Show? David Pevsner answers this question!
As for me, I was in the top row of a balcony, still reeling from the scenic photography and the cavorting horse in "I Have Confidence" when Mr. Plummer made his first studly appearance, but it wasn't until The Catpain and Maria shared a little dance that he won my foolish heart.
-
Good morning, all! I have too much audince participation today: my friend Josh has his senior recital at Manhattan School of Music at noon, and then I'm stayng around to catch the matinee of DIE FLEDERMAUS at 2:30. This means I have to carry some food with me in case during the 5-6 hours I'm out my blood sugar drops. I originally was going to see FLEDERMAUS on Friday night but Ron Raines gave me hell (his wife Dona's directing) and said the better cast was Wednesday's and Sunday's. so I changed my ticket. He called me yesterday and told me how good it was on Friday night!
This production is employing the current method adopted by too many fools running major opera houses: dialogue in English and the sung lyrics in German, and I detest it. I originally wan't going to go because I think this treatment of a European operetta is disgraceful; perform it in one language or the other but cut this half and half crap. Dona says she has to do it since she's sending srudents out to audition for opera companies, but I believe it's a pathetic situation and I'm surprised more don't bitch about it. But Jason Graae is guesing as Frosch the jailer in Act Three and . . .
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday to Our DR Jennifer !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We have so many things to wish for you!
-
Thanks DR Elmore.

re: friday's GHOST WHISPERER

DR MattH i probably enjoyed the show more than you because the 2 guest stars were JT and Victoria (married on the show and in real life) from the Young & the Restless (he played the soap star and she was the professor).
So it was interesting seeing them (i thought she was better than him, although he was supposed to be sort of dumb on the show). I agree the ending was great. Although it seems weird that it happened before jim changed to sam. I mean melinda has been in a few near death experiences since then!
-
Give Jason Graae a big sloppy kiss for me. He is the one who introduced DR Sandra and me to BK many years ago.
-
DR td - the radio show is what made me think of the question.....and the timing was perfect with the notes!
-
Off to work. Oh well.
-
Good morning!
My main computer locked up this morning and rather than do a hard reboot, I just switched to the laptop. That computer is going to need replacing soon!
It's a beautiful morning here. But it's going to be 86 today, so I have the attic fan on and doors open to try to suck in some cool air before I have to shut everything up to try to keep the house cool today.,
-
I got out this morning and mowed the front yard. I couldn't beloieve how quickly it had grown. Seems like I only mowed it two weeks ago, but it was probably longer.
-
I received an interesting email this morning, which I thought I would share. (I'll break it into pieces so that our post count is higher). ;D
A BIT OF HISTORY
In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and both arms. Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Arms and legs are 'limbs,' therefore painting them would cost the buyer more. Hence the expression, 'Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg.' (Artists know hands and arms are more difficult to paint)
-
As incredible as it sounds, men and women took baths only twice a year (May and October) Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved their heads (because of lice and bugs) and wore wigs. Wealthy men could afford good wigs made from wool. They couldn't wash the wigs, so to clean them they would carve out a loaf of bread, put the wig in the shell, and bake it for 30 minutes. The heat would make the wig big and fluffy, hence the term 'big wig.' Today we often use the term 'here comes the Big Wig' because someone appears to be or is powerful and wealthy.
-
In the late 1700's, many houses consisted of a large room with only one chair. Commonly, a long wide board folded down from the wall, and was used for dining. The 'head of the household' always sat in the chair while everyone else ate sitting on the floor. Occasionally a guest, who was usually a man, would be invited to sit in this chair during a meal. To sit in the chair meant you were important and in charge. They called the one sitting in the chair the 'chair man.' Today in business, we use the expression or title 'Chairman' or 'Chairman of the Board.'
-
Personal hygiene left much room for improvement. As a result, many women and men had developed acne scars by adulthood. The women would spread bee's wax over their facial skin to smooth out their complexions. When they were speaking to each other, if a woman began to stare at another woman's face she was told, 'mind your own bee's wax.' Should the woman smile, the wax would crack, hence the term 'crack a smile'. In addition, when they sat too close to the fire, the wax would melt. Therefore, the expression 'losing face.'

On TV TOnight!
ABC - EXTREME MAKEOVER, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, BROTHERS & SISTERS
CBS - AMAZING RACE, COLD CASE, THE UNIT
NBC - DATELINE, CELEBRITY APPRENTICE
FOX - cartoon shows
HBO - LADIES NO. 1 DETECTIVE AGENCY, IN TREATMENT
SHO - THE TUDORS
TNT - LAW & ORER: CRIMINAL INTENT, IN PLAIN SIGHT
-
Ladies wore corsets, which would lace up in the front. A proper and dignified woman, as in 'straight laced' wore a tightly tied lace.
-
Common entertainment included playing cards. However, there was a tax levied when purchasing playing cards but only applicable to the 'Ace of Spades.' To avoid paying the tax, people would purchase 51 cards instead. Yet, since most games require 52 cards, these people were thought to be stupid or dumb because they weren't 'playing with a full deck.'
-
Early politicians required feedback from the public to determine what the people considered important. Since there were no telephones, TV's or radios, the politicians sent their assistants to local taverns, pubs, and bars. They were told to 'go sip some ale' and listen to people's conversations and political concerns. Many assistants were dispatched at different times. 'You go sip here' and 'You go sip there.' The two words 'go sip' were eventually combined when referring to the local opinion and, thus we have the term 'gossip.'
-
At local taverns, pubs, and bars, people drank from pint and quart-sized containers. A bar maid's job was to keep an eye on the customers and keep the drinks coming. She had to pay close attention and remember who was drinking in 'pints' and who was drinking in 'quarts,' hence the term 'minding your 'P's and Q's '

In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannons fired round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a good supply near the cannon.
However, how to prevent them from rolling about the deck? The best storage method devised was a square-based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine, which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem...how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding or rolling from under the others. The solution was a metal plate called a 'Monkey' with 16 round indentations.
However, if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make 'Brass Monkeys..' Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannonballs would come right off the monkey. Thus, it was quite literally, 'Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.' (All this time, you thought that was an improper expression, didn't you)?

Thank you, DR td, for those fascinating facts. I never knew any of them!

DR Matt - I got your message. :)

Thank you, DR td, for those fascinating facts. I never knew any of them!
You're welcome!
Nor did I!
-
Happy Birthday to DR Jennifer!!!
-
I loved Christopher Plummer instantly in THE SOUND OF MUSIC. I had seen the show on a national tour, and it just never dawned on me that the Captain could be young, good looking, and sexy! That pose of his standing in the shadows in the doorway of that ballroom was MESMERIZING!
-
And the word of the day is: OBLATION!
"Someone has stolen all the kneeling stools in the church!" wailed the secretary. "Oh, what are we to do? We cannot expect our elderly parishoners to kneel on the cold, hard floor when they take communion!"
"Well," the Randy Vicar wisely said, "I suppose, just this once, we can instead hold a standing OBLATION."
-
I'll continue with the X-MEN work this afternoon by watching the bonus features connected with the second film. Then, it's on to reacquaint myself with the third one.
I have the third one on Blu-ray already (it was one of the early rollout titles Fox used to get people interested in Blu-ray), but it was done on a 25 gig disc and contained almost no bonus features that I recall. Still, I'd like to have the film part of the review written up by the end of the afternoon and get some of those bonus features noted as well.
-
I still have SMALLVILLE, THE OFFICE, and FLASHPOINT on the DVR, and I'll likely watch FLASHPOINT while I eat lunch. The others may get viewed this evening before primetime TV begins.
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And 24 hours from now I will be boarding my plane back to NYC.
-
DR elmore - Would you prefer them to do the whole opera in English? -I hope you have a wonderful time in Morningside Heights this afternoon, and if you're blood sugar does drop, there are a bunch of small food stores and bodegas around there too.
-
Workies.
But, I admit, I thought Christopher Plummer would make an interesting daddy.

Either entirely in English or entirely in German. I think this current practice is ridiculous.
-
Happy Birthday, Jennifer.
And I've been remiss in sending vibes to those who need them, so:

The pit is about 6 feet wide, I'd say, at least the part that's really a pit. Whether or not you consider it "in front" of the stage is your personal choice--it's underneath the lip, slightly in front of the proscenium arch. What makes it impossible to see each other is that the conductor is on the highest level with his head about at stage level, looking up through a very small opening (I don't know what the final specs are going to be, but it looks like only about a 2 foot square opening at this point). The next tier down is a good two foot drop, and that's where the second keyboard person will be, so I guess if I duck down, I can see her. Then there is another two foot drop to the floor where the bass and drums are, and by that time, what with my platform and the lower, second tier platform, they're a good 6-10 feet under the stage, with a ceiling there. There's simply no way I can see them.
-
It's raining today. I am very happy about that. Rain has been predicted several times, but we haven't really gotten any in quite awhile and are behind in our rain totals.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
TO DR JENNIFER!
-
From Laura:
I don't remember reading this news. Have you mentioned this before?
I don't think I mentioned the date since they only recently set it & since they ran into a snag with the restaurant they booked. Now they need to find a new place, not easy to do with one in NY & the other with more school work than hours to do it in. Bryan lives about an hour outside of Chicago making it difficult to check out locations.
-
François I have been a strawberry blond many times in my life & no one has called me Rita ;)
I hope DR Jose is having an easy flight home.

Thanks DRs MattH, JMK and Cillaliz!

Thanks on page 3 to DRs ArnoldBrockman, Jane, and TCB.

DR Jennifer I know how you felt losing the flower, though it wasn't an important item it made you happy.
Have a lovely day!
I feel stupid being so upset about it. It just made the purse look so nice. And it did make me happy every time i saw it. It was the first time i used that purse ( i took it out that day for spring). I don't even know where i would find another one like it.

I have had the same reaction to hats & hair accessories I've lost. It seems silly but sometimes it is the little things that get to us, or really brighten our day.

I'm up, I've read the e-mails, I've read the posts, and shortly I shall do the long jog.

It looks very nice out.

I'm hoping that our one guest is the gentleman I sent to HHW. . .
-
Now, let's talk some more about Christopher Plummer.
I saw him as MacBeth opposite Glenda Jackson.

Guess I should do the jog if I'm going to do the jog and I'm going to do the jog so I guess I should do it.

Last night I watched MURDER AT THE VANITIES (1934) which is another film from Universal's PRE-CODE dvd set. Such a fun, fun movie with tons of outstanding Earl Carroll musical numbers.
If you enjoy back-stage murder mysteries you will love this movie!
I am going to have to rent the other titles in this set, or maybe just break down and buy it!

So... How about this swine fly epidemic/pandemic? :-\
-
Well, I should start donning my tux for our final show. Thanks for all the Vibes. After the show, I have to strike my pit - a.k.a. put away the box/computer - and then I'll probably stick around and help with the set strike too. Then I'll head back to the apartment to pack my luggage, and then there's a closing/birthday party for one of the resident actors. Sleep is still TBA.
Laters...
-
So... How about this swine fly epidemic/pandemic? :-\
It is very frightening.
-
Ben! I thought that you and Ant were going to Long Island?
-
As of yesterday, the swine flu "epidemic" had infected eight people, in LA and Texas. There is a new report of some kid at a school in NY, but as far as I know no one has done tests to make sure it's the swine flu and not just a flu flu. But, you know, one case would be an epidemic for the media - after all, Jay Leno is now over his stomach flu or food poisoning so they need something new.
-
We are on Long Island but I'm at a computer right now so I thought I would drop in for a few minutes.
-
We have serious car problems. The little car that could is now the little car that needs repairs. I guess two round trips to Wisconsin put a strain on the little guy.
I'm taking the train back this evening and Anthony will stay out here. He and his father will take the car into the shop to see what's wrong (it's something to do with the brakes and rear suspension) and how much it will cost.
It just makes me glad I don't have a car!
-
And on that note I will take my leave.
But before I go, I listened to Donald's second show with David P and loved it. What a smart and funny man (that can apply to both David and Donald). I'm glad I got to listen.
-

The cases in the New York high school were confirmed as Swine Flu. I expect that you will see the 8 other confirmed cases' number swell quite a bit this week.

Good morning everyone.
Very pretty outside.
all notes, posts, links, read.
-
Dear td, thank you for the history lessons.
-
I decided not to go downtown today, Fiesta Broadway will have 500,000 people attending. Over 200 food booths for someone who can not eat.
-
Dear Ron, thank you for the karma and cosmic cooperation for us all.
-
Back from the long jog - pretty indeed - I was not pretty, but the day certainly is. Charmy is pretty and pretty amazing-looking for a sixty-six year old woman.
-
I shall now be on my way to rehearse, after which I'll be joining Mr. Cason Murphy at the VERY gay and festive French Market Cafe for a VERY gay and festive luncheon and prep session for our Nudie Musical casting.
-
Sunday afternoon greetings! We are back from Lima, OH, where it was announced that, effective May 17, 2009, my DH will be the permanent vicar at Holy Nativity Anglican Church (http://www.ohioanglican.org). They have not had an assigned pastor for a couple of years and are very glad to have someone who will be shepherding them, even from afar.
-
Happiest of birthdays to DR Jennifer!
-
Just put on The Brain from Planet X, another day of music, all day.
Will venture out once to unload the car at Out of the Closet, as I uncluttered some more yesterday.
-
Till this evening. :-* :-* :-*

A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO LONG-TIME DEAR READER JENNIFER!!!
-
I was listening to the Liz Callaway Frank Loesser album again. It is so lovely, but I wish the tempos were just atad faster on some songs.
-
It's a beautiful Sunday summer afternoon. Unfortunately, it's April, and it shouldn't be summer yet.
-
I watched FLASHPOINT while I ate lunch. Very involving episode and as usual, the viewer gets emotionally invested in the people who are in distress. Sometimes it doesn't turn out so well for them though in this particular one, they came out of the dire situation OK.
-
I had forgotten that I still had SOUTHLAND on my DVR too, so I decided I'd watch that before getting down to work. Wonderful episode. Yes, this show has some of the flavor of the old ADAM-12 series but with multiple storylines going.
-
Great card, Michael!
-
Then I got back to business with more of X2. I listened to portions of both commentaries, good that they don't really repeat much information from one to another. Enjoyed both.
-
Then I put in the second disc in the set. I'm maybe a bit over halfway through those bonus features. So, I still have a good one hour to 90 minutes more to watch before I can move on to X-MEN 3.
-

Oh wow! I'd never seen a white squirrel until now!
We don't see them often, DR td, but they attract a lot of attention when they do show up. Richard says, when he was still teaching, the kids would go berserk when they spotted one outside the classroom window.

There are 20 confirmed cases in the USA and 8 in NYC.
There is bound to be a major increase in the US cases because the CDC is aggressively seeking out victims; Doctors are being asked to do cultures on any patients who show even mild flu-like symptoms.
In this case, the media is not at fault - it is the Administration in Washington that held a full-up news conference today. Unfortunately, the administrative piece of paper that needed to be signed to aid the Government in planning is titled "Public Health Emergency" - as was clearly pointed out, such declarations are routinely make in the case of possible major storm events and other events like the Inauguration. Of course, the media did run with a PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY DECLARED headline. The press conference pointed out that the cases detected in the US were generally quite mild, and that the swine-flu bug responds to standard treatment (Tamiflu).
This will be a real "the Government can't win" scenario - play it down and be accused of ignoring public health, play it up and be accused of fear-mongering.

DR Jane - I don't fly back until tomorrow morning... Unless you know something I don't. ;)
You were receiving travel vibes & I thought it was today then instead of tomorrow.
Safe & easy travels tomorrow.

Thank goodness the car got DP Anthony home safely.

Ginny the white squirrel is a real treat. I like how you put together the Japanese theme basket.

I don't think it's stupid to feel bad. You liked it and wish you hadn't lost it. Is there a chance you'll still find it?

It's a beautiful Sunday summer afternoon. Unfortunately, it's April, and it shouldn't be summer yet.

Experimenting with the interaction between my new camera and my new computer.
A few days ago, our backyard had a visit from the famous neighborhood white squirrel:
COOL! I've never seen and albino squirrel. Two squirrels got in a fight on my bird feeder today, that was interesting. I threw out some bread and that seemed to calm everyone down. Maybe they are feeding babies or something, but they seem to be really hungry today
-
So is it a white squirrel or an albino squirrel...hmm...must google

Streisand Concert:
The show started off with a bit of “visual business” involving building the set and snippets of all the “A-Listers” in attendance – made enjoyable because it was backed-up with the glorious orchestral overture – staring with the overture to Funny Girl. And what an orchestra- no hidden musicians on the seventh floor, no keyboard fill-ins hiding under the apron, just lots and lots of real live instrumentalists filling the floor of the venue. There was a huge rectangular walk-way surrounding the pit and a center walk-way running across it. No matter where Barbra was positioned, you always got visuals of real-live musicians at work.
The numbers were:
“Starting Here/Starting Now”
“The Way We Were” (with a screen tag – In Memoriam Sydney Pollack”
“Evergreen” with Il Divo joining in multi-language duets with Babs
“Funny Girl”
“My man”
“When the Sun Comes Out” (her first single)
“You’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught” seamlessly blending into “Children Will Listen”
“In a Very Unusual Way”
“Somewhere” with Il Divo joining in
“Don’t Rain On My Parade”
All the numbers had fresh arrangements and Barbra never let her trademark vocal flourishes interfere with the lyrical intents of a number.
I only found fault with one number – “Somewhere” where the addition of Il Divo just didn’t work for me.
No sets, minimal costuming, no choreography. no special effects, minimal chatter – just music brilliantly performed.

And, thankfully, no political posturing.

I was listening to the Liz Callaway Frank Loesser album again. It is so lovely, but I wish the tempos were just atad faster on some songs.
If the number in question is "My Heart Is So Full Of You," then, too bad, you're wrong. ;)
-
Josh's recital was fun, but aggravating: he changed spaces in Manhattan School of Music and didn't notify folks, so when you got to the assigned auditorium on the invitation, you had to go back to the main desk and hope they knew where the recital actually was happening. After the ordeal of finding the original auditorium and finding the recital was elsewhere, I was not happy. The actual recital, to which I was late, was a lot of fun.
I would have liked DIE FLEDERMAUS more with less prancy choreography in the numbers and lyrics in English. It's silly in the Act One Finale to have Frank the jailer say to Alfred "Come with me, please" and have the tenor sing back to him "trink mit mir." Oy! And if I were Rosalinda, I'd ask the director, what do you want, me singing this wonderful czardas very well, or the four dancers prancing behind me while I'm working my ass off?"
The cast was very good and the orchestra played beautifully. The wonderful "Bruderlein Schwesterlein" sequence of the Act Two Finale was glorious and moving.

Sunday afternoon greetings! We are back from Lima, OH, where it was announced that, effective May 17, 2009, my DH will be the permanent vicar at Holy Nativity Anglican Church (http://www.ohioanglican.org). As for the flu epidemic... As DR DER BRUCER already stated, the piece of paper labels it an "emergency", so... I did do some reading up on the situation, and the "emergency" is more for the sake of preparedness than anything else. Some of the news reports I read likened it too a severe weather warning - like for a flood. In other words, it will happen, but the degree of the "damage" is still to be determined.
However, as DR BER BRUCER also mentioned, since swine flu is "the flu" there could have been cases already going around, but just never diagnosed as "swine flu". Some people may still be in the midst of it, and other may have already recovered. -And I have a friend who was dealing with flu-like symptoms last week, and now he's wondering if it's possible that he might have had the "swine flu". -And he lives in one of the affected areas, so...
Again, better to be cautious at this point and time. The flu can spread very fast, basically exponentially, so...
Stay healthy! Wash your hands! And no kissing! ;)
-
...And right before I gave the last downbeat, I did get a little choked up... And even held the penultimate beat just for a split second longer to make it last just that much longer...
And, now... I pack.
Laters..

Thank you. I'm fine so far. My stress level has gone down since I have Sheena with me.
I took her to the dog park today and we had "Mini Me" Sheena there. Then someone came with a male dog that looked like her as well.
Wish I had my camera with me. It was so cute--they looked like a family, Mom, Dad and Child. Except the "child" was 2 so already grown up.
But they had the same white marks on their chests, same curve of the tail and on the little one the same white mark on the back right foot.
-
You both must have been very happy to be back at the dog park.

Doing ok. How is everyone here?
I had to change my cell phone to unlimited minutes. With all the phone calls I've had to make ( and get) it only made sense.
I spent over $60.00 in two weeks when it would have cost me $55 for the month so I changed plans.
There's no contract so I change it back when things calm down.

A question for BK or any knowledgeable Californian...
Is Dana Point, California anywhere near North Hollywood?
I'm reading up on the history of skateboarding and finding conflicting info on who sold the first skateboard.
All the sources say that Bill Richards sold them from Val's Surf in 1959, at Dana Point, but the Val's Surf site itself says they weren't founded until 1962...

Good Evening!
So... I'm almost done packing. I have a medium load of laundry finishing up, and once those are dry, into my bags they will go. Of course, at this point, it doesn't look like all the clothes that I packed for my trip down to Charleston will fit back in my luggage for my trip back to NYC. I did buy some clothes while I was down here - just two pairs of jeans and two shirts - but now I'm wishing I had mapped out how I packed everything. ;)

Here's just a teeny-tiny reality check - twenty cases of swine flu do not an "epidemic" make. There's no way to spin that to mean anything else, I'm afraid. 100 cases would not be an epidemic, not that any but the twenty have been confirmed. I know what the government has said, but I should think the word "epidemic" is the media's. I cut no slack to the reprehensible media, I'm afraid. They should all be drawn and quartered and run out of town on a rail.

-And if you actually took the time to read the posts here on this board and post regularly, you would also know that no DR on this here site is interested in skate-boarding. -At the very least, I don't recall skateboarding ever being mentioned by a DR.
And, again, you're more than welcome to Google "skateboarding 1960 dana point california".

Had an interesting rehearsal - I had the singer run straight through the show - the act is still solid - unfortunately, she's right back where she was when we began in terms of performance. I'm sure some of it was nerves, but I was quite strong about the need to lock the patter again, work on the performance of it (she tends to sound like she's reciting, instead of just saying it as herself - it's ALL written in her voice and she's funny and charming in person), and the interpretation of the songs needs to get back to where it was. So, we're back tomorrow, then they'll work on Tuesday without me, then we'll be back for four intensive rehearsals before we do the show.
-
Then I met Cason at the French Market Cafe - several of the waiters gave Cason very friendly glances, if you get my drift. We went over what we needed to go over and it looks like we've got a large turnout for both casting sessions, so that's good. I had a BLTA and a handful of sweet potato fries, and a half a wedge salad (shared with Cason), and then, for dessert, rice pudding.

I'm now sated. I came home and proofed the booklet and inlay for House Of Flowers, and that's close to being finished now and can probably go to the printers on Tuesday. The master will be to the pressing plant by Wednesday and we should have discs a couple weeks later.

I had a BLTA and a handful of sweet potato fries, and a half a wedge salad (shared with Cason), and then, for dessert, rice pudding.
Was Cason wearing his Brain from Planet X tights again?
::)
-
bk - The next time you and Cason sup, maybe you should go to Mark's in NoHo. No shortage of "friendly glances" there.

Very nice, DR TCB.
Thanks, Jack!

I think i am going to go watch Celebrity Apprentice now. For some reason i find this season to be hilarious.I can't stop watching it!

New avatar DR TCB?
Have you lost weight?
Not enough!
How much? I almost didn't recognize you, more because I always think of you with a mustache.;) Nice avatar.

Tonight is Nancy Carroll night on TCM. I haven't seen many of her movies - but when her contemporaries are interviewed about her, they don't have much nice to say about her offscreen personality.
-
Nice headshot, TCB.

Uh-oh, I think 3DDIFFUSION has returned as a GUEST.
-
I didn't think anyone's answers to 3DDiffusion were in any way unpleasant or attitude-laden. If memory serves, that hasn't always been the case with her postings.
-
Now we shall watch movies.

DR MBARNUM - when my copy of the Pre Code Hollywood DVD set arrives, I will give you the rundown - you may want to rent rather than buy.....I should have mine in a week or so.
And so ends THE SEARCH FOR BEAUTY.

NOW I shall watch some movies.

Here's just a teeny-tiny reality check - twenty cases of swine flu do not an "epidemic" make. ...but I should think the word "epidemic" is the media's. I cut no slack to the reprehensible media, I'm afraid. They should all be drawn and quartered and run out of town on a rail.
I have seen no instance of the media reporting the existence of an "epidemic" - there is just the reasonable concern that the "outbreak" could become an epidemic.
And the "20 cases" are just the US confirmed - there are over 1000 in Mexico and others in Canada, Spain, and probably New Zealand.

There's also MapQuest (http://www.mapquest.com/maps?1c=Hollywood&1s=CA&2c=Dana+Point&2s=CA).
I was also kind of hoping for memories of skateboarding in the 1960s, but gee, thanks so bloody much for just saying, "No, Dana Point is nowhere near North Hollywood."
I meant nothing...other than the directions. :-\

I have no memories of skateboarding. I do, however, have memories of roller skating. I remember the trip to the ER and the cast on my arm.

I would expect nothing less from you, of course. Here in the real world, especially on radio 980 they have called it an "epidemic" since they first broke the story two days ago. Every twenty minutes we hear the word "epidemic" and I have news for you - it is hardly the only station or news broadcast that has said it. The only difference being is that when 980 says it it's not accompanied by a film score.
-
Keep the info to yourself, DR JANE. It will be better that way.
I disagree. I do find it very sad & wonder what makes a person so cynical they don't recognize an attempt to be nice.
I used to be extremely sensitive, honestly with good reason, & slowly realized it is best to takes things as if they were meant to be kind & generous. If they weren't, then for the most part I can ignore or laugh it off. It really makes life easier & nicer. I think more often then not when our feelings are hurt, or if someone is rude to us, it is due to lack of interpretation than a true intention on the other person to make us feel bad. Of course there is that large population of people out there who are truly clueless. ::)

I'm still watching the TV Land Awards.
Just had to share. ::)

True story...
I just did a final check of the drawers and cabinets here in this apartment. I guess there were a few cabinets and drawers I did not check when I got here seven weeks ago. I just came across an extra set of sheets, a whole other set of towels, a broom, and a mop. -At least I was able to borrow the vacuum cleaner from the rehearsal studio. ;)

bk - What would you like it to be called? Even terming this as an "outbreak" could seem alarmist to some people. At least by calling it an "epidemic", people are paying attention, checking themselves and their friends and family, and taking precautions.
In any case... I just hope everyone stays healthy.

I think that is the main problem with internet communications. Everyone can read their own moods and attitudes into the written word. Often, something that is written to mean one thing, comes across an entirely different way. We have seen that many times on HHW, where a post is taken out of context.

So, I believe I shall be heading to the closing night/cast/birthday party around 10:30. I plan to stay for just about an hour. And then after a couple of hours of sleep, I think I'm going to head back to Hominy Grill in the morning for my final "Charleston Breakfast". I'm in the mood for a "Big Nasty Biscuit".

Danise - Glad you're taking some action

I am back in Manhattan after a whirlwind trip to Long Island. Don't know what will happen with the car. Anthony's father may pay for the repairs which would be a great relief to Anthony. We will know more tomorrow.
He was very sad to hear about MacGregor and was also glad that I didn't tell him until yesterday.
He was scheduled to arrive in Manhattan early Friday evening but the car trouble changed all that. He didn't get here until about 9:15 but some luck was still around since he got a parking spot in front of the building. We unloaded the car and didn't get to bed until after midnight what with unpacking et al. Even though Saturday was a gorgeous day in New York City we stayed in and got settled, having decided not to try a trip to Long Island until early Sunday morning to avoid as much traffic as possible. We left about 6:45 and by 7:10 we were at the Midtown Tunnel but didn't think we would make it. Anthony fiddled with the parking brake and that seemed to relieve the problem a bit so we headed into the tunnel and finally arrived at Phil and Rose's about 8:45. His father heard the sound the car was making and realized how serious is was (is). We just hung out at the house (with a side trip to Trader Joe's in the other car that Rose drives). I did some computer maintenance and we had a nice dinner of rigatoni with homemade tomato sauce and great meatballs. I was driven to the train station and got home without incident.
It's almost 10pm and I have a meeting at the Ford Foundation tomorrow afternoon so I'm going to bed.
See you all in the morning (at least those of you on the East Coast).

-
DR Ben - ...I'm just glad that the "car gods" were with you and Ant. It's never a good thing when your hear "yourself" on the radio traffic reports. ;)
-
DR Ben, that will be very nice if Anthony's parents pay for the car repairs. From the description it really is lucky he not only made it home safely, but that you both made it to Long Island.
Twice while in L.A. we lost pets. Odd that both times I suddenly knew. If you don't say it out loud then it isn't true & much better to wait for the news.
-
And my luggage is packed! :)
Of course, now I'm feeling the events of today catching up with me... I have a feeling my appearance at the partay will be a brief one. -But just brief enough to give everyone a good hug. :)
-
My friend is a school nurse, she says that ONE case of measles is considered an epidemic.
-
And there was a one-case epidemic at our local school several years ago.
-
And the reviews for The Philantropist - which I believe DR Ben saw a few weeks ago - are starting to come in...
From the New York Times (http://theater2.nytimes.com/2009/04/27/theater/reviews/27phil.html)
Watching “The Philanthropist,” a moribund revival of a 1969 play by Christopher Hampton that opened Sunday night at the American Airlines Theater, is like being stuck in a stuffy room with a bunch of pompous, malicious or dreary writers and academics.
Actually, the fig leaf of simile is unnecessary. Watching “The Philanthropist” is quite literally a matter of being stuck in a stuffy room with a bunch of pompous, malicious or dreary writers and academics. Or at least actors portraying them. For sheer dullness, this putative comedy, directed by the talented David Grindley (“The American Plan”) for the Roundabout Theater Company and starring the talented but increasingly mannered Matthew Broderick, beats just about anything on Broadway this season.
And that's just the first two paragraphs!
*And I seem to remember DR Ben having similar sentiments.
-

Well.. This is the latest update from the outbreak/epidemic/what-you-wish-to-call-it in Mexico:
"Mexico health secretary says suspected swine flu cases rise to 1,614 with 103 believed dead, AP reports. 30 suspected cases in Jalisco."
-
Have fun DR JOSE.....I always check all the drawers first.
-
Congratulations to RICHARD husband of DR GINNY - both of whom have visited the World of Wisdom....and brought me cake.
-
Now I don't know what to be more afraid of: The Flu or Somali Pirates. I think I will just stay home.
-
Hey, we would have, but those family members were all waiting on us.
-
Epidemic is a word that has a meaning, which Jane posted here. Outbreak is fine. Mexico is not what the news is reporting - they're reporting that the US is having a swine flu epidemic - while it could conceivably turn into that (or not), it is NOT what it is NOW. NOW it is an outbreak or a few sporadic cases in a handful of cities. Of course, I hope everyone stays healthy, too.

DR JANE - once someone is purposely rude and there is NO DOUBT here on HHW - for me the gloves are off. Said person who is now obviously trolling the board as a guest usually comes here and says terrible things. More often than not MR BK is the target - tonight it was everyone who tried to help.
I shall now use an old HHW'ism that we haven't seen for awhile.
Hey GUEST/3DDIFFUSION - KMA!!!

Maybe they're gas-lighting you, DR JOSE - and they just put the stuff in there last night.

-And the primary reason the CDC started investigating the cases in New York, Iowa and elsewhere is due to the outbreak in Mexico.

Nancy Carroll's charm escapes me....but these might not be her best movies.

LITTLE DORRIT went out in a blaze of glory and dust - you had to be there - on Masterpeice Theatre tonight. The actor playing John Chickery the turnkey's son had several heartbreaking moments in tonight's closer, and he's a wonderful young character actor. For the rest of the cast, wrongs were righted and the good ended happily. Many ended rather sadly. The DVD will be out in another week, I think, and I recommend it to all of you. It was an excellent series. just got the 2-film version from the 1980s on Region-2 DVD and I look forward to seeing how they jandle the story.
DR TCB, what a wonderful headshot!

I think i am going to go watch Celebrity Apprentice now. For some reason i find this season to be hilarious.I can't stop watching it!
I'm the same way. Don't bother buying the Turkey Triple Play from Schwan's though. It wasn't good

AND the primary concern on the recently reported cases of swine flu in humans is that the current strain seems to be made up of both bovine and human strains of the flu. The current drugs and vaccines may help alleviate the symptoms, but they may not cure it or prevent it totally. And since the "swine flu" can be transmitted both from animals to humans, and humans to animals, there is also a possible threat to the food supply too. -And notice how I used the word "possible". ;)
-
And for the record, I'm not that worried.
Yet.
;)

OK... Time to partay for a bit...
Laters...

Have fun at your partay, DR Jose and travel vibes for tomorrow

Note to self. When you use the bisquick pancake shaker, be sure the lid is on before you shake the mix....

Thank you, DR der Brucer, for providing us with that nice summary of the Streisand TV special. I appreciate it.
-
I spent another hour watching the remainder of the bonus features on the X2 DVD second disc. I am hoping all Fox did with the Blu-rays was port over these bonuses onto the new sets. It will save me A LOT of time if that's all they did.
-
Then I put ijn X-MEN: THE LAST STAND on Blu-ray. The third film in the trilogy is defnitely the weakest one. Some lame wisecracks sprinkled throughout the movie and these huge, loud action set pieces that aren't always that involving. Done more as a comic book on film than the other two which seemed to put these fantastical beings in real-world situations.
-
Page Twelve Dance!!!
-
I then began sampling the two commentaries that are on this disc. I didn't much care for Brett Ratner's commentary with two writers, but the producers' commentary was very informative.
-
Then I watched tonight's DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES.
Scary to see what Dave's going to be up to. WIll be glad to see Orson leave the show (if he's leaving).
-
Fortunately I didn't break anything. Are you ambidextrous now?
Somewhat - I can sweep with either hand and use hand-tools adequately with both hands. I still write right-hand only.

Oh, what Ryan and Holly! Snakes in the grass! Good performance from Matthew Rhys tonight.

I started a Lelouch movie I'd never seen, and, as always, I got completely hooked by it, but then had to have a telephonic conversation (and a nice one) that just lasted about forty minutes. Now I'm off to Gelson's for a snack of some sort, then I may watch another half-hour of the movie (it's quite long and I'll have to finish it tomorrow night), then I have to do some prep work on the next Kritzerland soundtrack release - I think I mentioned I'm doing something a little different - I want to do one presentation of the score that's somewhat close to film order, then have the LP order, too - so, two completely different presentations of exactly the same music. I think that's a fun way to go, but it really depends on how hard it is - I have to pull apart a couple of four-minute tracks that are comprised of several edited-together cues so that I can put everything where it belongs. I've already noted where that stuff occurs and as long as my mastering guy can do it, it shouldn't be too hard.
-
I guess I'll head down to bed now.
Good night!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Sunday.
I did absolutely nothing but watch TV and eat. I didn't leave my house once. :D
-
I just remembered I have a 20 movie DVD from 1925 to 1956. Before censorship. The Wild and the Wicked, Test Tube Babies, Terror of Tiny Town, Ten Nights in a Barroom, Slaves In Bondage, She Shoulda Said No, Sex Madness, The Road to Ruin, Mad Youth, Joyless Street, etc.,
With today's posts maybe it's time to take off the plastic wrap and watch them.
-
I only left the house once, to get food I can eat at work tomarrow. Strawberries, bananas, oatmeal breakfast cookies (really really soft) and water.
-
I did watch 2 hours of House, my favorite cranky doctor.
-
I had to delete this post. Thought better about not giving my opinion.

You can always give your opinion - just follow it with a smiley face.

I'm listening to music and thinking about the notes.

During highschool, Dana Point was always one of the summer places to go. Along with Malibu, Zuma, Moonstone Beach, can't remember the rest now.
-
What the heck, I'll just say it. I do not like today's skateboarders. ;D ;D ;D
-
Well... I'm back from the party, and I stayed a bit longer than I planned. But that was a good thing. People brought various foodstuffs, and they even fired up the grill for some burgers, turkey burgers, Boca burgers and hotdogs. Oh, and "Beer Pong"! -I only observed.
Lots of smiles, lots of hugs, no tears. Although, I suspect that when I'm dropped off at the airport by my stage manager, well... We'll see.
-
And since I still would like to have a proper breakfast before I head to the airport...
Goodnight.
-
Dear Jose, happy tears.
-
Goodnight everyone.
Health, happiness, and lucky vibes for us all.
-
Goodnight everyone.

I watched both "Desperate Housewives" and "Brothers & Sisters" tonight.
