A PARADE IN TOWN
« on: October 30, 2009, 12:49:50 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a parade, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're a parade, too.

Thanks for the Parade report, BK.  I've always liked the recording (especially the performers), and it's nice to know that a show can be changed for the better...not just changed for the sake of being changed. :)

In my DVD burner (for my dad):  the remastered F. W. Murnau's "Nosferatu, A Symphony of Horrors," recorded on TCM last week.  Also, "Directed by John Ford," a documentary by Peter Bogdanovich that was originally made in 1971, shown on TV a couple of times, then forgotten until 2006.  Peter redid some things, added some new interviews and re-released (or maybe just rebroadcast) it.  My dad loves John Ford movies.

The opening night pictures aren't up on Broadwayworld.com yet - but I would guess they soon will be.

Working today of course.

PARADE - hmmmmmmmmmmmm, I have the CD, which I liked, but the short excerpt they showed on the Tony Awards show seemed so inept and unmoving, I haven't thought about it since.

Friday morning greetings!  I slept well, dreamed of a positive NY Times review for FR, and woke up to find that my dream had come true!  Congratulations to DR Elmore and all!

A BIG Congrats to DR Elmore and the cast and crew of FINIAN'S RAINBOW on a fantastic opening night and a boatload of love letters from the press!

(And I bet that Rue McClanahan pushed her way into the opening night party...)

Good morning!

It's moderately gray outside this morning which is something of a surprise since today was supposed to be sunny before a weekend of rain. I guess the clouds have rolled in earlier than expected.

I got up earlier than usual this morning, got my newspaper read, and then settled in with the rest of the bonus features from UP's first disc.

One of the great joys of Blu-ray (and of HD-DVD when it was around) is the more sophisticated ways that commentaries can be accomplished. I began this morning watching the Cine-Explore commentary which has the films's director and co-director doing commentary but with lots of picture-in-picture inserts of storyboards, sketches, recording studio behind-the-scenes shots, rough animation ideas for scenes that were discarded, etc. all illustrating what the two men are talking about. The DVD has the audio commentary alone, but these inserts really brings the commentary to life and makes it so much more enjoyable.

I watched the other features on the first disc, too, which included the cartoon short which preceded UP in theaters, another new short featuring the adorable character of Dug which seems like it could have been inserted into the movie (they do these with all of their animated features going back to MONSTERS INC.)

There's an interesting documentary on the expedition that members of the production team took to Venezuela scouting the locations for the film's fictional Paradise Falls area (the Angel Falls region is astounding).

And there was a featurette on the various ways they attempted to deal with the elimination of the villain in the movie, and we see lots of storyboard and rough animation ideas that they discarded.

Now this leaves me with only disc two in the set to spend the rest of the day with. I hope I can finish it this afternoon so I can get the review up in the early evening. Time will tell.

Just a reminder:

UGLY BETTY is now on Friday nights. (Several friends of mine have missed the show's first two weeks of episodes because they don't link BETTY with Friday night.)

WHITE COLLAR has a new episode tonight following a new episode of MONK.

All of the usual Friday suspects (MEDIUM, GHOST WHISPERER, LAW & ORDER) are on tonight with new episodes.
