Well, you've read the notes, all 57 varieties, and now it is time for you to post until 57 cows come home.  To it, I say.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BK!!!

*And just think, since you're starting your birthday on the East Coast, and finish it up on the West Coast, you sort of get an extra long day to celebrate and enjoy!

-Do I sense some C.C. Brown's Hot Fudge somewhere on today's menu?  Or at least a Pounded Steak?  Or a Combination Louie?

Welcome Hisaka, and thank you for coming out of lurkdom!

I can't believe it - I'm posting from an airport.  These new-fangled wireless things are amazingly amazing.  Not many people here.  I finally got to bed at one-thirty and got up at four.  Left the hotel at four-fifteen, got to the airport twenty-five minutes later.  Got my aisle bulkhead seat after they saw I was not going to take no for an answer.  So, at least I won't have anyone sitting in front of me and putting their seat in my lap.

AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION:
Quote
Grandpa's Chocolate-Rum Cake

Dark chocolate and rum are the predominant flavors in this dense and decadent cake. Because the flavors are so intense, you need only a thin slice to be perfectly satisfied. The cake slices well after chilling 1 hour, but plan to refrigerate it overnight before serving to allow the flavors to mellow.

1 cup butter, softened
2 cups sugar
4 large eggs
1/2 cup dark rum
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 cup hot water
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Mousse Frosting
Garnish: chocolate shavings

Beat butter at medium speed with an electric mixer until fluffy; gradually add sugar, beating well. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating until blended after each addition. Add rum; beat until blended.

Combine flour and next 5 ingredients; add to sugar mixture alternately with hot water, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Beat at low speed until blended after each addition; stir in flavorings.

Pour batter into 2 greased and floured 9-inch round cakepans.

Bake at 350° for 27 minutes (cake will not test quite done). Cool in pans on a wire rack 10 minutes; remove from pans, and cool completely on wire racks.

Spread 1 cup Mousse Frosting between layers. Frost top and sides of cake with remaining frosting. Garnish, if desired. Cover and chill 8 hours. Store in refrigerator.

Yield: 12 to 15 servings (Or 2-3 if Jose or Panni are present)

Tonight at 8:30, a mad experiment will take place for the first (and perhaps the last) time.  An audience will take seats (free, ticketless, reservationless) at the 78th St. Theatre Lab (above Stand Up New York, just east of Broadway) and a cast of eight will sing some of the songs by that great American songwriter, Irving "Squeaky" Klein.  There will be jazz.  There will be protest songs.  There will be ballet.  There will be a cheesy 80's pop duet.  There will be a drinking song.  There will be performance art.  There will be bossa nova.  There will be a cantata.  All of it improvised before your very eyes.

I think that, in honor of our esteemed BK's birthday, we should get our very own Guy Haines to sing a program of songs!

So let's get a list made, kids, of songs we would like to ask our very own Guy Haines to sing.

I, for one, would like to hear him sing "Is It a Crime?" from Bells Are Ringing.  Transposed down to a more comfortable key, of course!

DRNOEL - I cannot find the entire quote.  I have checked Coward's Diaries, Mordden's R/H book, and a bio of Lorenz Hart.

The only reference I find is in Mary Rodgers' interview for PBS' GREAT PERFORMANCES in which she said:  "Noel Coward once said that Daddy 'just pissed melody.'"

Quote
Noel Coward once said that Daddy just "pissed melody." That doesn't mean that a lot of thought didn't go into his songs, however.

Good Morning!

Well, I sort of slept in again today, so I mush ruch off very, very soon and head into rehearsal...

Welcome back to the Pogues!

Welcome here, DR Hisaka!

Welcome back to the West Coast, BK - once you get there/here!  -And I love the whole wireless thing in airports too!  One of the last times I flew, I noticed people sitting on the floor outside one of the airline lounges (you know, for the very frequent travelers).  Hmm.. What are they doing?  It turned out there were taking advantage of the wireless modem setup in the lounge by sitting outside it's doors!  ;)

OK... Gotta run...

Now that I see your horses frolicking in the meadow, may I offer you a lock for the barn door?

After composing, but prior to preview or post, select the entire text with the mouse and press the Ctrl and C keys simultaneously (this puts the contents on your clipboard). If the test subsequently disappears into the cyber netherworld, simply start a new "Reply" (not Reply with quote) and press the Ctrl and v keys simultaneously - this will paste the text back into the form.

After you suffer sufficient pain, you may develop the habit of preparing lengthy posts in a word document from which you can cut and paste into the appropriate HHW form.

I shall reserve for you a copy of my forthcoming book" "Anal Retentiveness for Dummies".

Added note: if you copy and paste your proposed post into a processor like MS Word, you get the added bonus of spell checking prior to posting (which I did and found 3 errors in the above which have been fixed).

Noel Coward once said of Richard Rodgers:  "When he pisses, melody comes out."

[move=up,scroll,8,transparent,100%]Happy, Happy Birthday, Bruce.[/move]

If you come to Portland to promote Writer's Block, Betsy will bake you the most yummilicious homemade chocolate cake (not to be confused with the yummilicious chocolate zucchini cake she made for the HHW gettogether, though she could make that, too) you have ever tasted--guaranteed.  It is a combination of her family's secret from-scratch cake recipe combined with my late mother's secret from-scratch frosting recipe and it is not to be believed.

Re:  getting older without realizing it.  As Betsy and I were watching the sweet but mistake-prone older couple on Amazing Race last night, I turned to her and said, "We'll be with each other when we get old."  Pause.  "Which will be next week."

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRUCE!!

DRLaura as usual your photos brightened my day, and this is one wet day.

Jennifer it is sweet of you to think so but I’m not really.

Panni & DRLaura my morning and evening were lovely, it was the afternoon when I disappeared from here things weren’t fun yesterday.  There are some unpleasant problems with the remodeling.

My BK question of the day (for BK and everyone)...why, oh why, do people put toilets in their front yard and used them as planters??? I just don't understand it!

I agree with DR Elmore, but I think it can be boiled down to the idea that it's "practical."

I mean...where the heck do you dispose of an old toilet?  Without, I mean, having to pay to have it carted off, or without worrying about being caught "dumping" (if you'll forgive the illusion/choice of word)??

I believe some of DR Elmore's trashy kitschers find it a means to an end...and think of the fun they have when they use natural fertilizers for the plants inside them ("Ha-ha! Bet we never thought a cow would have his poo in our throne!  Yuk Yuk!)

Just a thought....

Happiest of birthdays, BK, and congratulations on what sounds like a delightful trip to NYC!  Hope you're back home safely soon.

Welcome, new DRHisaka, and a belated welcome to DRvixmom.

In addition to our (HHW's) birthday frenzy this week and next, I just came from a meeting of 6 people, 3 of whom have birthdays in the few days (one today, in fact).

My question:  how do people like having Dec. birthdays so close to Christmas, Chanukah, or whatever winter holidays you celebrate?  When I was growing up, my mother waited to start decorating for Christmas until after my birthday, to keep the latter special.  I now realize that that crunched all her Christmas preparations (the visible ones, anyway!) into a very busy 2 week timeframe.

I do believe I am going to buy myself a digital camera...does anyone have any recommendations?

I have a Kodak EasyShare camera. it is very easy to use and very easy to hook up to the puter and print etc. It includes all the software you need to crop, correct redeye nd other picture problems or to convert to black & white, or cartoon version or other little fun features.  The sioftware also includes a link to make emailing the pictures very easy.  I have had mine for  two years so it is only a 2.0 megapixal.  My  husband just got a 3.1 megapixel (also Kodak Easy Share) and his enlargements are much nicer than mine.  Two of the ladies in my office also have Kodak Easyshares , one is a 4.0 and the other a 5.0.  The differences in the clarity really are noticable.  We all love how easy they are to use.  I would definitely recommend the Kodak Easy Share in the highest megapixel you can afford.

VIXMOM - my mother's birthday is also on Christmas day....

Well, DR's - in Indiana, a Shelby County Elementary School has banned ALL peanut products from its building.  No student may bring a peanut butter sandwich to school for lunch.  ONE student is allergic to peanuts.  His classroom had been declared a "No peanut" zone, and precautions were taken in the cafeteria for said student, BUT his parents would NOT accept that as "enough."  So ALL students must now accommodate this ONE student's "rights."

A peanut allergy is terrible, I have friends who might die if they eat anything with any type of peanut product in it.....but they don't make ME stop eating peanut butter.

I don't particularly care for sushi, in fact,  I loathe it.  I think in my honor all sushi places should be shuttered so I will not be sickened by the sight of watching people eat beautifully presented bait.

Let's ban Rap too while we're at it, I think perhaps my rights are being violated by being forced to hear sounds unpleasent to my ears...

Michael - Listen to Mom!

And, now Grandpa:

First off, sit down in a nice comfortable spot, and contemplate:

What am I really going to do with the camera?
If all you're really going to do is post pix on the internet, Email pix to friends, or post flyers for lost animals, than a 2M Pixel camera is enough.

Do I want to be bothered with elaborate Photo Software, or do I just want to get the damn pictures out of the camera, do some sensible editing, and have appropriate save options.

The Kodak Easy Share cameras with Compuer dock walk on water! You have a small cradle that sits near your coputer in which you store your camera. While its in the dock, the batteries are always kept full-charged. Grab the camera and go - point, click - review; go home, put camera back in dock, push the Transfer button and your Kodak software loads, lets you select the downloading options of your choice, downloads the pictures and launches the Kodak Picture Processing software with the new pictures in place, ready for edit. Go get to to trim, color correct, preview and save your changes. You can also do a "Save As" where you get to select the picture pixel size and resolution based on your intentions. (The basic picture loaded from the camera always stays in your computer, so you can go back and do other things.)

And they have things you never thought you's want - like video capture: these tiny puppies take video of birthday parties (and orgies) which you can replay right on the camera for the delight of all - and you can plug in the supplied video cable and play then with sound on your TV. You can even save the video and sound as a QuickTime file to send to friends and relatives (Birthday parties, not orgies).

If you want details, go to  Kodak's (http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=2/3/9/19&pq-locale=en_US) site and explore.

If I were buying today, and could be a bit patient, I would go for Kodak's  Reconditioned Offer (http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml;jsessionid=PI1UW0UQIU13RFW4FBCXWEEW1YUEQ4L4?pq-path=3321&pq-locale=en_US&_requestid=1):

Reconditioned CX6330 Camera, Dock and Memory Card (128MB) Bundle - $260.00 - backordered. Get  big, beautiful pictures from a feature-rich camera that's simple to shoot, simple to share.
 Amazing prints up to 11" x 14" (28 x 36 cm) with 3.1 MP
 3X optical zoom lens
 Point-and-shoot simplicity
Multiple scene modes and video capture

Not that this should have anything to do with the question at hand, but it's not like they're banning One-A-Day mulitple vitamins.

This is chapter ONE.
Chapter TWO will be clever kids working out ways to by-pass the ban. (If terrorists can get a bomb on a plane, an 11 year old can get a peanut into a school.)
Chapter THREE will be the funeral.
Chapter FOUR will be the lawsuits.
Chapter FIVE will be the relieved parents on a year long around the world cruise paid for by the advance on their LIFETIME movie deal.

Bryan’s birthday is the 23rd and he was never cheated out of gifts.  We made sure of that.  Often the last day of school was the 23rd so that was the day he would have his party.  There were a few years Chanukah and his birthday were on the same day.  I was the only one it was difficult on-it was a lot of work keeping all the holidays separate and special.

As TCB rumored and the  AP  (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,140825,00.html) reports:

Quote
Girl Suspended for Bringing Jell-O Shots to School
Tuesday, December 07, 2004

NEW ORLEANS  — An 8-year-old girl was suspended for nine days for bringing to school what appeared to be about 30 "Jell-O shots"  — though it was unclear whether they contained alcohol.

The incident occurred Nov. 29, as the girl stood after classes outside Geraldine Boudreaux Elementary School

The gelatin was turned over to the sheriff's department for testing to see if it contained alcohol.

The girl was suspended for violating school rules against possessing or trying to distribute a "lookalike," or something that appears to contain drugs or alcohol.

Under the lookalike rule, the girl's suspension will stand no matter what the sheriff's department finds.

"The school system's position is, it doesn't matter if it had alcohol in it or not," Nowakowski said.

The mother must also allow school officials to test her daughter's hair for signs of drug use, Nowakowski said.

Lets see, if junior goes to school with a "lookalike" peanut butter sandwich, will his parents be jailed and the kids urine tested for asparagus consumption?

And, yes, Virginia, you can make "lookalike" peanut butter sandwiches:

 SoyNut Butter (http://www.thesoydailyclub.com/groceries/SoynutButterAisle.asp):

Quote
Very much like peanut butter in texture and somewhat like peanut butter in taste, soynut butter is delicious in its own right.  It works perfectly in all recipes calling for peanut butter including the classic sandwich with jelly and of course Elvis' favorite sandwich with banana.  Soynut butter has less fat than peanut butter and perfect for those with nut allergies.  It has a high level of soy protein, since it is made from ground, roasted soybeans blended with soyoil, and seasonings such as salt. The final product has a nutty flavor akin to peanut butter and is made in both smooth and crunchy styles

My take on the peanut butter thing is that the school does not want to be responsible for this kid inadvertently eating someone's peaunt butter sandwich and croaking...and the parent's don't want to take the chance that some kid might feed a peanut butter sandwich to this kid just to see what might happen (which is not unlikely to happen)...so the solution is obvious. I don't know that it is the best solution (I am a peanut butter lover!!!), but when you have people who don't, or can't, take responsibility for themselves, and the school's (logical) fear of lawsuits, I guess they are left with little or not choice.

If you get a Camera that stores the images on a removable photo card (which a great many do) then you can go to many retail outlets that now offer Digital Photo Kiosks - stick in your little Flash Card, many your print-out selections from the menu, and - Instant Photo Lab quality print-outs!

Don't underestimate your need for picture storage - the secret to good pictures is indiscriminate shooting and intelligent editing.

My take on the peanut butter thing is that the school does not want to be responsible for this kid inadvertently eating someone's peaunt butter sandwich and croaking...and the parent's don't want to take the chance that some kid might feed a peanut butter sandwich to this kid just to see what might happen (which is not unlikely to happen)...so the solution is obvious...

Can we spell HOME SCHOOLING?

I don't particularly care for sushi, in fact,  I loathe it.  I think in my honor all sushi places should be shuttered so I will not be sickened by the sight of watching people eat beautifully presented bait.

Let's ban Rap too while we're at it, I think perhaps my rights are being violated by being forced to hear sounds unpleasent to my ears...

Welcome, DR Vixmom, and congratulations on getting into the snarky stride of things here at HHW!  All within your first ten posts!  ;)

Yep, it seems like we get all reruns in December for many shows.  I do think it's a great idea for them to replay the first episodes.

And then on January 5th we also get the 2 hour premiere of ALIAS.  Yeah!

All I keep thinking about now is cake.  Darn!  Coffee ice cream or peanut butter will just have to do.

I need to straighten this mess of a house ( my mess anyway since I can't do anything about the remodeling mess) before Keith has a nervous break down.  Sometimes I feel bad for him having to live with me.

DR NOEL - I did find one more source for the quote, and it is a bit more elegant.

Noel Coward once said of Richard Rodgers:  "When he pisses, melody comes out."
This has to have been from the time Rodgers and Hammerstein were writing Pipe Dream.

Re digital cameras:  Look for "optical zoom." It gives you better than "digital zoom."

Also, buy an extra memory card -- you'll need it. The ones that come with the cameras only hold a few pictures.

You can get one of those things that plug into the USB port to store photos. Ask the kid at the electronics store for a "jump drive" and he'll show you one.

Happy Birthday, Bruce! Best wishes, happy returns, etc. (pronounced "etz," dontcha know :) )

Similarly, nobody should be confused about how to pronounce F'd as in Generation F'd - the revue-based-on-improvs you can see at Barrow on 36th west of 8th Monday night at 7 & 9.  It's "eft" and I rhymed it with "left" "heft" and "election theft."

(I had a limited array of possibilities.  "Bereft" is not a word this generation uses.  "Cleft" was suggested, but we already had a line about botox elsewhere.  Two wild ideas that struck me as forced: "Unicef'd" and "We've been blinded, also deafed")

Digital camera talk reminds me that I may have forgotten to thank the Kimlets for the Ipod advice from some days ago.  DW Joy has asked for either an Ipod or a digital camera, and the price of an Ipod was more than 3 times the amount I could afford to spend.

I'm shocked so many people CAN afford Ipods.  I also don't know why they're not called ear-pods, but that's just me.  With Second City closing its (NY) doors and the Linklater School not taking off, I'm in a low-income bind.  Can one get a decent digital camera for less than $100

Watched that COCO clip again today and thought of another reason it's valuable: the number was pre-taped on the COCO set at the Mark Hellinger Theater. Since that building is now used as a church, the clip becomes even more valuable showing us a lost theater we may never get into again.

Has anyone been in the Hellinger since it was taken over by that church?

I'll try a bit more of an abbreviated review of what we saw in London:

SWEENEY TODD:  We had been in our flat for a half hour, before I went out the back door, crossed the street passed the Ivy, to the Ambassador Theatre and booked this.

Forget all you know about the original production.  This feature eight singer/actor/musicians (and four chorus extras).  There were no barber chairs.  It was a coffin.  There was a bigger coffin out of which Sweeney made his initial appearance.  It became Mrs. Lovett's pie shop and so many other things.  A  ladder on which anthony swayed became the ship that he and Todd came to London in.  It later served as Johanna room and window.  Pirelli and Sweeney shaved wig blocks for their contest.  The deaths were represented by an actor pouring blood from one bucket into another.  Rather than literal, it was all very theatrical and stylized.  Except the playing in more ways than one...it was more realistic.  Lovett was not made up like a kewpie doll and was far less cartoonish than Lansbury (don't get me wrong...I loved Lansbury), which made her more real and more frightening tragic at the end.

What was even more amazing was that the actors also played all the accompaniment.  All played mulitple instruments...there must have been four different people on the piano at various times...they also played them extremely well.  When one wasn't in a scene they were playing something, sometimes they were playing an instrument while they were doing a scene.  Mrs. Lovett played a muted trumpet.

I know all this sounds strange, I can see Kimmel cringing even now,  but I tell you it worked, it worked and was a compelling, haunting legitimate take on the show.  Sweeney Todd is probably both my and The Lovely Wife's favourite show and we adored the original production, but this just left us gob-smacked.  We'd turned to each other in wide-eyed, jaw-dropping delight at the inventiveness.  It was fabulous!

Next night was THE OLD MASTERS...another winner written by Simon Gray and directed by Harold Pinter.  Two lovely star turns by Edward Fox and Peter Bowles ably supported by the venerable Barbara Jefford and one of my favourite actresses over there, the lovely Sally Dexter.  About two figures in the art world of the early twenty century up into WWII.  Fascinating and funny.

Third night:  A revival of BECKET.  Very disappointing.  It's hard to erase the memory of O'Toole and Burton anyway, but Dougray Scott as Becket had an at times impenetrable Scottish accent beside given a rather phlegmatic performance.  Jasper Britton, an actor I like, tried valiantly with Henry II but was defeated by a new translation by Frederic Raphael which may have been the biggest fault of the production.  Still it was well-mounted and had a couple of worthwhile moments.  And it's always nice to see something in the Haymarket.

JOURNEY'S END...a revial of Sheriff's WW I drama of the trenches was brilliant!  A young cast...many making their West End debut.  Olivier had originally done the lead in the initial production but when it transferred to the West End, he was stuck in a flop production of Beau Geste and director James Whale cast Colin Clive.  The pair went on to do another little item in the cinema that got some attention later.

BURIED CHILD...at the National starring M. Emmett Walsh, Elizabeth Franz and some girl from SIX FEET UNDER.  I usually don't go see American plays in London, but Walsh was in great form.  Sam Shephard is kinda like Pinter.  I don't always understand it, but I find it compelling.  The cast was filled out with Brits who were terrific too.  This was a matinee, that night we went to...

EARTHLY PARADISE...at the Almeida. A play about pre-Raphaelite artists and writers, William Morris and Gabriel Rosetti and their fascination with Morris' wife, Janey, played by the lovely Saffron Burrows.  Not a great play, but certainly an interesting one and I love discovering history this way.  The actor who played Morris was great.

And that was the first week of theatre in London.

Week Two, London, Theatre Report.

FESTEN...was the first play we went to see that Monday (most English theatres are dark Sunday).  It's based on both a dutch play and a dogma film of the same name.  Searing stuff, very well played.  Funny and frightening!

GRAND HOTEL...at the Donmar Warehouse, Tuesday.  Mary Elizabeth Mastriantoni (sp?)played the ballerina.  It was a good solid production, though both The Lovely Wife and I did not find the Baron up to Mr. Barrett's high level.  And for a 3/4 Black box, I found too much of the staging geared for out-front proscenium.  As we were on one of the sides, this was problematic at times.

Wednesday night was Alan Bennett's HISTORY BOYS.  Great play, great production.  Terrific performances by  Richard Griffiths, the ever-droll Frances De La Tour, and Clive Merrison...who appeared in my very first movie ever SIGN OF FOUR and later went on to play Holmes on radio.  Also all the young men who played the students were great!

BLITHE SPIRIT...Thursday with Penelope Keith as Madam Arcati.  I was a little wary of this production as Ms. Keith...an actressI've enjoyed over the years...burned me in another Noel Coward a few years back.  An adaptation of his story STAR QUALITY....which I had liked as a TV movie years ago.  Ms. Keith was not right for the role and the adaptation was bad.  It was probably the worst piece of theatre I ever saw in London.

But BLITHE SPIRIT was by the master himself and Keith was right for the role of Arcati.  It had also got some nice reviews except for one bad one.  Should have trusted the bad one.  The production wasn't bad, but it did seem a little tired and forced. Keith was okay as Arcati, but not blazingly funny, as I had hoped.  Ruth was excellent.  Elvira, while pretty, did not take over the show (as I imagine Tammy Grimes did in the musical version, High Spirits).  And Charles, who should be reacting to all the chaos around him, instead became a part of it.  Mugging and over-done.  He reminded me physically (and performance-wise)  of Ed Bundy On Married With Childre.  Felt that character should be the epitome of Coward himself.

Friday and Saturday, we ended our theatre-going with HIS DARK MATERIALS.  A six-hour, two-part play done successive nights.  It is based on a 1,300 page trilogy written by Philip Pulman.  A children's dark fantasy.  It is immensely popular in Britain and also controversial as it gets its digs at religious dogma and the organized church.  It's basically a retelling of Milton's Paradise Lost...only this time the rebelling angels win.  Very rich, fascinating material.  The same company that did the LION KING effects, did so here...which were extensive...involving puppetry and strange character devices (like Armoured Polar Bears and daemons and angels and Cliff-ghasts and Harpies).  It also uses all the formidable stage technology of the Olivier Theatre.

The Lovely Wife and I had eagerly anticipated it.  It had gotten great reviews in its earlier run that year and was now starting up again.  We liked.  It is an engaging, fascinating piece of theatre.  But we were not blown away by it as we had expected to be.  Perhaps, it was inevitable given our anticipation.  It is terrific theatre, don't get me wrong, but I think we had expected transcendant theatre.  The second night was much stronger and came closer and Julieanne was weeping copious tears.  There were wonderfully moving moments.  But though Julieanne kinda of got there, the second night, I didn't...even though I enjoyed it immensely.  It must be said:  This was a new cast from the previous one and the show was still in previews, so it may not have settled yet.

But even so it was well worth seeing and the fitting end of a very good theatre trip this time.  Every show had at least something to make it worth the price of the ticket.  Becket and Blithe Spirit were the weakest of the lot.  History Boys, Journey's End, The Old Masters, and Sweeney Todd were as good as it gets.  I think History Boys was my favourite.

The Sweeney sounds very interesting and I'd like to see it.  What a trip you had.

Yes, Son of Godzilla is in Japanese.

Yes, the M is a brand new transfer and makes the previous Criterion release look like VHS.  This is the same transfer that was used on Eureka's region 2 DVD which I've had for six months.  Only the Criterion looks even better.  It's jaw-dropping and you will see M like you've never seen it.  A must-have, with loads of incredible extras.

King of Kings - another must-have if you love the film, for it not only has the general release version, it also has the almost never seen 155 minute premiere version which, I understand, only ran at the Grauman's Chinese.

Do you know where the Sankey family came from Jane? It has two possible meanings, one of them English, the other one Irish.

If your family is from England, they are named after a river in Lancaster with a name that possibly means "holy."

If your family is from Ireland, it is a shortened version of the name Mac Seanchaidhe, which is a patronymic name meaning "son of the chronicler."

In some instances, it has been confused with "sionnach," meaning "fox," and has been Anglicized as the last name Fox.

Mr. Guy Haines will be delighted to know that his CD is stocked (at least one copy) at The Dress Circle.  London's top Show and Musical CD store.  They also carry several records produced by our very own Birthday Boy!

The only drawback to London this go-round was, thanks to the devalued dollar, it was very, very expensive. figure two bucks to every pound now.  I bought five hundred dollars worth of books that would have been well over a $100 dollars less last year.  It seemed like only a year ago top ticket at the National was 27.50pds.  Now it's 35.  West End top is forty.

Evening all!

I'm typing this as I sit in the jury room waiting to be called or let loose.

It's about one in the afternoon and I have yet to called for anything.  Oh well.

I know people think it is boring but I'm having a grand time.  I read my book and finished it. I've listened to music, typed about 5 letters and had some pleasant chats with the folks around me.

I had lunch with my friend who works in the courthouse and saw a lot of the people I used to work with there before I transferred over to the County Center.  I only worked with them a year but it was to see how many remember me and to say "hello".

Something some one said on the board the other night has stuck me and I have to say something.   Someone said that BK's book didn't have any words in it that we haven't read or heard before.

Well, it stuck me that when I read a book, I'm reading used words.  What's up with that?  If I'm buying a new book, you would think I could expect it to be full of new words or at least it should say on the cover that it contains used words.  I think that should be looked into, don’t you?  :D

I guess the same could go for music as well.  I mean it contains notes that you've heard before, right? So, your really listening to used music. Can't someone come up with something totally NEW?

I've had another deep thought while I'm sitting here.  Why can't there be a tea shop chain like there is a Starbucks chain?  There are certainly enough tea flavors and tea drinkers to give old StarBucks a run for its money.  I would love a place like that.

I would have liked a nice hot cup of tea this morning but all they had was coffee.  Ugh.

Glad to see some of our lurkers posting.  It's always nice to meet new people.  Welcome!

TCB, I don't think my transporter works that way. It's just a point "A" to point "B" type.  I think you are confusing it with a T.A.R.D.I.S.  (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space).  From "Dr. Who".

The T.A.R.D.I.S. looks like a police callbox in England.  Here in the States, they have a another use. You see them all the time at construction sites and sometimes at concerts/ren fests.  I'm sure you know the blue box I refer to.

I’m already home.  They let us go at three thirty.  Yay!

Digital cameras—make sure you get a optical zoom.   That is better.  I know the docking thing sounds great but here’s the rub on that.  By having your camera connected to the computer, you risk a feedback loop that will scramble your cameras insides.  I know.  I had it happen to me with my first digital camera.  Luckily it was still under warranty but I learned my lesson and I ONLY use the card to download my photos to the computer.

I have a Casio camera.  The reason I got it was because it is just like a 35 mm camera only you don’t have to mess with all of the settings unless you want to.

It has a “Best Shot” feature that lets you pick what the conditions your in look like and then the camera automatically sets itself.    The way you pick the “best shot” is in the display—you pick “Best Shot” from the menu and then it shows the pictures in the little picture screen.  When you have the one you want, you hit “select” and whamo you have it!

RE" "Sweeney Todd".  A less than wonderful review in the latest Sondheim Review.  Ex-Hainsie Allan in the UK also found it "interesting" but not a must on our visit there. After we had opted for "Woman in White" (which we attended with Allan) we thought we maybe should have slit our own throats.

DR Charles, I assume you were referring to "Relative Values". I saw a production in the mid 1970's. The Dame Julie "Star Quality" works reasonably well.

For long posts, you can also just highlight your text and right click on "copy".  It definitely makes you feel more comfortable when typing something long!

To quickly highlight everything, just press "control-A" on your keyboard.  However, if you just want to highlight selected text, then you have to use the mouse OR place your cursor in your text where you want to start, hold the "shift" key, then use your arrow buttons to highlight the text.  It works with all the arrow buttons...all four directions!

Welcome back, DRCharlesPogue!  I'm more interested in the books you bought.  I'm thinking about order from Amazon.co.uk the recently published autobiography of Denis Quilley.  I met him when he did JUBILEE, my Cole Porter restoration, for BBC Radio-3, and he was a delight.  I'd just seen him at the National in CANDIDE, so we talked a lot about Bernstein and Hellman and his playing Candide in the 1958 London premiere.

Twiggy, a dear friend of Mr BK and myself, played Elvira a couple of years ago in Chichester's BLITHE SPIRIT.  I would have loved to see her.

We never stay long enough in one place to have enough close friends to invite to a surprise party.  I need to go to LA for my birthday if I want a really great party.

A surprise trip sounds like fun.  The closet I came to that was the year Keith planned a trip to Williamsburg for my birthday.  I knew ahead of time so I could pack and hire a kid & pet sitter.  It was a great birthday.

Well, Jane, it is a mutual admiration society, and almost a verbatim quote one, as well.  When Betsy came home today I told her about our posts, and the first thing out of her mouth was:  "I knew there was a reason I like Jane so much!"

The clutter situation has been the one thing in our otherwise pretty tranquil domestic life that I tend to get a bit peeved about (of course, Betsy would probably LOL at me qualifying "peeved" with "a bit").  ;)

DRMATTH - I don't often give (or take) advice - BUT if NOISES OFF is a show you have always wanted to do, don't miss a chance to audition for it.  There is always time to watch DVD's later.

If you don't, when the show opens and when you see it, you will always wonder if you should have.  And if you don't audition, you won't know.  I know what you mean.  From May-September I do four shows - doing various things, acting, directing, tech, choreography - and then the rest of the year and do two or three others.....if you want to do the show, audition.

I saw House of Flying Daggers this evening, Dear Readers.  I suppose films of this genre might be an acquired taste for some, but I nonetheless urge you to see it, even if you think you don't like "martial arts" films.

This picture actually is a tender love story, punctuated with intricately choreographed scenes of action and violence.  The action, however, is pure ballet, and the violence is visual poetry.  (Little gore is depicted.)  The film is beautifully photographed and very well acted.

I'm just back from seeing DRNoel's "And Then He Wrote . . ." The Songs of Irving "Squeaky" Klein at the Second City Training Center.  The show was a goof, and DRNoel was the musical genius at the piano.  I wanted to stay and talk to him about it but there several reasons I left, the first and foremost being that I've been out late every night since Monday, I was dragging, and I still had things to do at home concerning my surgery before bed.  The second reason was that, while there were several good performances, I didn't want to say anything critical in that small confined space.

It wasn't until I got outside and walked home that I realized how hot and stuffy it was in the performance space and how drowzy I was feeling.  I think my favorite moment was a Latin number about Lucy dancing the hootchy-kootchy.   The music was sassy, the singer funny, but she was so quiet I missed a few lyrics.

DRNoel played quite nicely and exuberantly, and outside of the deliberate ripoff of "They Can't Take That Away from Me," I have no idea how much of the music was his.  There were some wonderful moments, but a lot of them were tempered by the limited singing abilities of some of the cast.  All said, DRNoel deserves a hand for his excellent work.

Let's you're arranging and/or arranging Jacques Brel' Carousel and you musical quote Richard Rodgers' Carousel (Which I don't know if it is a good idea or not) but does one also pay royalities to the Rodgers estate?

First of all, DRMichaelShayne, I wouldn't quote the Carousel Waltz because I don't feel it and the Brel song are in the same ballpark, even further away in French where the song is the Waltz With a Thousand Beats!

The quote from Rodgers would have to be less than 4 bars, I think, to avoid copyright violation, and I, as an arranger, wouldn't want people wondering what they were hearing in the background when they should be focusing on the singer.  Too many arranger/pianists in the cabaret world, and several I've worked with, forget it's about the singer and not the accompaniment.

Tomovoz,  Not sure what you're talking about "Relative Values"?  The "Star Quality" that I saw on stage with Penelope Keith was about two years ago, called Star Quality, was adapted and directed by the same guy and stank.  I do remember a Star quality...I believe also called Star Quality, back in the late seventies or early eighties, a Brit TV movie.  Can't remember who starred in it, but it was delightful.

It seems to me I read or heard somewhere where Sondheim at liked the current Sweeney.

Thanks, DR Elmore, for being there to witness our mad experiment, a completely improvised songwriter songbook revue.  Counting tonight, the entire show received 26 hours of rehearsal.  A cast of eight mastered the art of song improvisation well enough to present an amusing and varied act consisting of dances, classical music, hippie happening "be-in" craziness, an Astrid Gilberto type number with ppp singing (that stands for "quieter than is humanly possible"), protest songs, beach musical silliness, post-war jazz, the obligatory inebriated male duet, a torch song, the echt 80's pop duet, and something that sounded suspiciously like Gershwin called I'd Be Lost Without That.  The cast can't wait to do it again, but they'll have to.  Some of us are exhausted!

Loved LOST and loved how it grips you early and keeps you gripped for the entire hour, and then doesn't let you off the hook due to other cliffhangers. Fabulous series.

And Matthew Fox is one of the foxiest men currently on television.

My question:  how do people like having Dec. birthdays so close to Christmas, Chanukah, or whatever winter holidays you celebrate?

It's a bummer.  And not only is my birthday one week before Christmas, my sister's birthday is the day after mine.

Fletcher the amazing deaf Dalmation amazed us again today.  We had to put him in his crate, as we had shopping to do in Dover and he can get quite destructive if we don't restrict him somehow.  When we got home, he was out of his crate.  No, I hadn't forgotten to lock the door; he had somehow broken through the TOP of the crate and climbed out!

Fortunately, the only damage he did to himself was a scratch on the bridge of his nose.  The crate can be repaired, of course, but the thought of him injuring himself is downright scary.

I've always thought myself lucky, having my birthday in August.  There are no holidays that month, nothing to distract from my very own important day.

Of course, der B has his birthday eight days before mine, so we celebrate the entire week.

I strongly suggest everyone who has a lousy birthdate consider transferring their birthday to August.  If you can change your name, you should be able to change your date of birth.  (There are people who have been changing their birth year for decades, if not longer; changing the day should be a simple thing to do in comparison!)

Working on Portland, but Marcy the Marketing Lady is finding resistance from the mystery store and Powell's say they only like to have "names".  If anyone in the area would like to call these two stores and give them a piece of your mind and tell them we will fill the joint to the rafters, then please do so.

Dear reader Panni took me out for a splendidly splendid dinner at Spark - I had the Rib Eye Steak - very yummilicious.  They didn't have the pasta dish that I so loved last time I was there.  She also brought a Parisienne Cake - she has the photographs which she will post.    I'm gonna try to get to bed by ten, but who knows if I will or not.  What a lovelier than lovely birthday this was, thanks to all of you dear, dear hainsies/kimlets.

Welcome, dear lurker-now-reader Iris.  Dear lurker/reader Iris got to meet the lovelier than lovely elmore last night.

Oh - and I had halibut. Quite tasty with a lightly spicy tomato sauce. But no garnish to speak of. Just a piece of fish - sitting there like so much fish on top of "broccolini." (translation: squished broccoli). Luckily, bk had ordered mushrooms on the side, so I dug into those. Yummy.
