Title: WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES
Post by: bk on November 01, 2005, 12:06:32 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know what a difference a day makes, twenty-four little hours, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently playing croquet on the manicured lawn.

And the word of the day is: VOCIFEROUS!

In my e-dictionary there is an illustrative sentense of  VOCIFEROUS; "be vociferous in their demands for easier examinations."  I feel like  dedicating  this to DR Sandra. :)

Good morning all!

I was so tired last night.  The first day back to work after being off over a week and the time change just did me in.

I keep forgetting who has my email address and who doesn't so here it is:

DofB5@tampabay.rr.com

I'll keep an eye on my junk/spam mail folder because if you are not on my list, that's where your email goes until I move you to the "approved" list.

If I don't answer an email from any of you and you didn't have my email address before now, please post that I have mail or I might not see it.

One of my tasks while I was on leave from work was to clean that junk mail box out.  I had well over a thousand email!    :D

It's off to the doctor today for my post op.  Hopefully the meds I'm on will work and this will be the last time I have to deal with this problem.

Have a GREAT day all!

Caught up from all the postings from last week.

The release of SOUTH PACIFIC will be the original ROADSHOW version and perhaps the EUROPEAN version which followed the stage continuity.

Good morning!

The hour is much earlier than usual for me, but that's because I must get up and get out (fill in your own reference) very soon. Helping to install a home theater today, and have an hour's drive to get there. Hope to be back home by mid-afternoon, but not sure if I'll get any DVDs watched today or not given the time I'll be away.

What makes me break out into a cold sweat?

Well, I mentioned hideous faces yesterday. I am also no a crawly big-lover. Don't like the big tree roaches (called palmetto bugs here in the South) that turn up here occasionally and spiders aren't a favorite either (kind of like Ron Weasley in that regard).

Well... To be truly like the opening chapter of "Writer's Block" the weather would have had to been miserable, and the rehearsal sort of dingy.  The weather yesterday here in NYC was absolutely glorious, and the rehearsal studio has floor to ceiling windows along two sides (a "corner" basically) that overlook 42nd Street and part of Times Square.  Quite luxe, actually.

:)

But the excitement and the "hope" that we were part of something big was most definitely in the air.

-Oh, and since you can't smoke indoors now in NYC, there was no cigarette smoke lacing the air either.

Oh.....well I have a primal fear.  Sometimes it is a dream I have as well....but it has been with me all my life.

Driving across a bridge, and going over the rail into the water....and not surviving.  It is awful.  It scares me to think about it....and write about it.

I was watching ANYTHING GOES again last night....and in the first number, when Bing and Donald leave the performance area to start their "hilarious" gags, the floor in front of the wagon is clean.  Once they start the "gags" the floor is littered with debris, including what looks like a broken chair.  Do you suppose they cut some of the "funny" stuff?

Primal Fears of Me:

Very strange, but I do have this deep seated fear of the end of the world.  I have occasional nightmares about it--sometimes involving nuclear war or alien invasion or some kind of weird radioactive phenomena that starts in the skies over the middle of the Pacific Ocean.  I am less fearful of my own death than I am of the end of everything.

I'm also afraid of spiders.

November greetings from rainy SW Ohio.  I'm home today, on sick leave, to visit my doctor at 1:45.  Five days of self-medication did not cure me, so it's time for some professional attention.

I'm afraid of heights.

Actually, it's a fear of falling, I think.  I do get myself in situations where I challenge that fear, but it's real.  Whether I'm on the rim of the Grand Canyon on scampering around in the Alps, it kicks in and there's no denying it.

Strangely, flying doesn't bother me, and I always get the window seat when I can.  I guess planes feel solid to me.  Go figure.

Okay, I'm all caught up!  I'm staying at the Hotel Allegro at the corner of Randolph and State, right in the middle of the theatre district:  WICKED is at the Oriental, Billy Crystal was just (I think) at the Crystal Palace (?), the Goodman is doing PURLIE, and Julie Andrews' THE BOYFRIEND opens next week.

I left the apartment at 6:30 am yesterday, flow to Chicago at 9, both EST, arrived at O'Hare around 10:30 (Chicago time).  The band rehearsal was from 3-7, and it went quite well.  The section I'm supervising was fun, and a lot of the other Arlen charts came from the CBS television collection, mostly by Peter Matz and Jimmy Carroll.  There's a great "Blues in the Night" for Dorothy Collins from "Your Hit Parade" by Peter Matz.  The one dud was a chart for "That Old Black Magic" for Julius LaRosa, which was so pathetic we're trying to find another for Ron Raines at the Library of Congress.

Today the rehearsal is from 2-6, and the cast for the concert is coming in today.   I'm using Kinko's for the internet service and the ladies here are quite kind and patient with my computer gaucheries.

DRMichaelShayne, good to see you back!  DRJRand55, best wishes on the new job, DRJose, tell Todd Ellison I send my love as well.  Bye for now!

Hello, I'm back after a long hiatus!   ;D

I hope that I will be welcomed back vociferously.

I don't exactly know what my most primal fear is, but most of my fears involve really gory, painful stuff that I won't talk about in public.  I have been focusing, lately, on being more brave about these fears.  I saw something about a year ago that still haunts me; I'm kind of still recovering from that.  However, I CAN tell you the previews for the movie Saw II totally freak me out and I CANNOT watch them.  I have to change the channel every time a trailer comes on.

Title: Re:WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES
Post by: Jason on November 01, 2005, 09:48:01 AM
I'm here....and I just got up a few minutes ago. I did call in just to get some rest after my parents' vacation. I was truly exhausted - more mentally and emotionally than physically, but exhausted nonetheless. I'm very glad they were able to come up for a visit, though, and I hope they had a good time.

There were a couple of times this weekend that I know I was kind of a butthole. I didn't mean to be, but I don't have a lot of patience when it comes to indecision and bickering, of which there was an abundance between my mom and aunt. That stuff drives me nuts. I was also very uncomfortable when they would point out pretty girls and ask when I was going to get married and have children. There were also times that I was slightly embarrassed by things they would do or say, and those are my issues. By Sunday, I was more than happy to let them venture out on their own a little bit while I stayed back at the hotel. Overall, though, it was a good trip, but I was ready to go back to my regular life. :)

I feel guilty every time my parents leave to go home after coming to visit me. I'm not sure why. Part of it has to do with knowing just how much money they have spent to come visit me. Part of it also has to do with feeling guilty that I'm not as sad to see them go as they are to be leaving me. I love my family very much, but I didn't cry when they left. Is that bad?

Anyway, enough psychotherapy. They're on a plane as we speak to go back to Louisville and I'll see them again for Christmas, so it's all good.

Dinner with DR Jose was lovely - I'm glad he could join us. He kept the conversation lively and my parents thought he was just faboo.

DR Laura: My granny is apparently doing quite well. I dunno how or why, but she's alright. Thanks for asking!

Re:  JR's fear.  A woman drove of the Morrison Bridge here in Portland a few months ago.  It made the national news because even though all her doors were jammed, and the SUV sank within seconds, by a great stroke of luck her driver's side window broke out on impact and she was able to get out that way.  They pulled the car up a few weeks later and her cell phone was still there on the dashboard.  I think Inside Edition or somesuch show covered the story.  We have that fear, too, and have instructed the kids what to do should that ever happen, especially with power windows, which make it all scarier somehow.

Adventures of Superman questions (for BK or others in the know)--I've been making my way through the episodes.  Why is the source material on "The Stolen Costume" so much hideously worse than any of the others?  Was it taken out of the first syndication because of the deaths of the villains?  I noticed it had that 70s-era Warner Communications logo at the end which none of the others do.   Also the commentaries keep saying various times that the first season aired.  Some of them say 1951 while others say 1953.  Did it air only in LA for 1951-52 and then went national in 1953?

Last month I beheld the amazing sight of a flock(?) of about 20 monarchs fluttering by my 13th floor office window.  Amazing in that I have never in my life seen more than two butterflys hang together at the same time, amazing that they flew so high.

The ghostly apparition of William F. Orr has returned.  SCARY.

Superman was shot in 1951/52 but did not begin airing until 1953.  Don't know why the condition of The Stolen Costume is like that - they should have decent materials on all that stuff, but maybe the negative has gone missing on that episode.

Speaking as a mom, DR Jason, I'd say, "No, it's not bad, just a sign that you've found your own way."  When we took our son back to UC this fall, after we'd unloaded the cars we went out to dinner.  I asked if he needed any help unpacking and he said, "NO."  Then I asked if he wanted us to leave and he said, "YES."  Then he got a real guilty look and asked if it made me feel bad for him to say that.  I said I'd be more upset if he didn't want us to leave.  As I said in my email, your relatives are lucky to have someone to visit in the city who can show them such a good time.

DR Jason, hello, nice to see you again!

Your candid post touched me, because - although I'm not all that much older than you - it wasn't so long ago that I had the same issues with my family.  In fact, I still have a bit of them today.  It seems I just can't control myself when my mom is here for too long and I end up acting like a total beaver and hating myself for it.   And when I visit my dad for too long, I get really irritable and I can't wait to leave.  I start feeling really judgmental toward my family and wishing they were a little more enlightened (because I'm such a shining example of a perfect human being  )

Hey look, I love my family and I respect and admire what's great about them; but these people are not *chosen* to be part of our lives.  Not by us, anyway.  And we have a lot in common with them, much more than we are quite comfortable with, and often the most irritating qualities they display are the ones we hate the most about ourselves.   Personally, it's one of my most primal fears (TOD!) that I'm going to turn out like my mom; and there's one thing about my dad in particular that I worry will rear its ugly mug in my own life.

I think it's okay to feel guilty, because it shows you're a sensitive human being with compassion who recognizes when you are treating people in a way you would not like to be treated.  Just recognize it for what it is and give yourself a break for being a human being.  And know that you're not alone -- I feel your pain!

Hi DR Joy!

I was also thinking about DR Jason's post.  But I was thinking about what he said about crying when they leave.  I think it is more common to cry for a boyfriend/girlfriend leaving as opposed to parents or aunts/uncles.

It's the Church of TVLAND, I guess.  They show reruns from 1 pm until 7 pm and then local ministers and DAVEY & GOLIATH all night.

I think it's normal to feel guilty, DR Jason, but I wouldn't waste time worrying about it. Chicks leave the nest and make their own ways in the world. Their function now should be for emotional SUPPORT when you need it.

Oh, how I identified with the prodding about pretty girls and getting married. At age 35 or 36, I finally told my father and mother I was not getting married and they needed to stop talking about it. I do think that's the last time they ever did mention it, but it was common for them to try to fix me up with dates until I moved away from them to another city.

When I got in, I watched EXTRAS from Sunday night.

Honestly, I did laugh, but all the back-and-forth about men who could or couldn't be gay because they had been married with children got rather tedious.

And the guest star was someone who's obviously well known in Britain but not known here, so his involvement with a woman half his age didn't have quite the impact to me that it might have had to a Britisher who hated to see the young girl using him and carrying on with a studly stagehand behind his back.

Then, I went to my to-watch shelf and pulled off SILKWOOD.

Another disappointment: it's a flat letterbox transfer, non-anamorphic from our friends at MGM. I'll watch it because I like the movie and want to see it again after a long, long time, but it didn't make me happy to see such a penny-pinching transfer.

DR Ron Pulliam, quick! how many fingers am I holding up?  I went for my eye exam a week ago, and my sight is pathetic.

I just read of the death of Paula Laurence, a tough old broad, wonderful comedienne, and lovely friend.  She was 89, although I suspect she was possibly older.  She was a good friend and her stories of singing in night clubs in the 1940s, working with Orson Wells, Kurt Weill, Moss Hart, and others were fascinating.    There is a wonderful drawing of her by Paul Cadmus, published in a collection of his drawings, and it's a pity that her two songs in ONE TOUCH OF VENUS were not recorded with the Mary Martin/Kenny Baker sessions.  She is on the Decca recording of ROBERTA with Kitty Carlisle and Alfred Drake.  I will miss her and remember her charm and glamour.

Here's something totally out of left field:

The song "Say One For Me" has been running through my head all day.  First, by Bing Crosby alone.  Then, as a duet with Debbie Reynoles.

"The next time you say one,
Say one for me.
The next time you pray one,
Pray one for me.
And you have my promise
I'll say one for you.
The next best thing to one prayer is two."
Title: Re:WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES

And DR Jason's family saga has brought a memory back that I'd totally forgotten:

I saw "Say One For Me" at a drive-in theater.  I saw it on my birthday back in 1959 or 1960, and my father took me to see it.  My mom stayed home.

It was most unusual for my father to do anything just with me (i.e. without my mom).

Ron, thanks for asking.

Yesterday our hardwood floors got their fist coast of stain.  The smell was horrific and our eyes were stinging, so off we went to a hotel in town.  Well, Keith stayed several hours raking leaves while I ran errands, then we went into town.

It was a beautiful day & a perfect afternoon for the Halloween parade.  After the parade, along with the rest of the crowd, we walked around town.  We had a delicious dinner in one of our favorite restaurants and walked around some more before stopping for ice cream to take back to the hotel with us.

The hotel had a beautiful view but the air/heat system wasn’t working properly & we roasted all night.  To top that off were the groups of people still celebrating until the early hours of the morning.

Keith was up and out of there by 5:30.  I sat in bed and watched a beautiful sunrise before taking a very long walk in the park.  Boy was I sorry not to have my camera with me.  After checking out I took a long walk around town and browsed in the bookstore.

DRLaura, I’m sorry to say there are no real Halloween duties for us in the country.   It was nice to be in town with the action.

What?  A good time?

Yes!  My optometrist's name is Higginbotham and I've known many a Higginbotham in my day.  None of them are his relatives, but he's very familiar with all the places where I knew them.

So...go figure.

My vision has changed...I need stronger close vision and weaker long vision.  My far vision is getting better and better as I age, for some reason.

I had a couple of air sandwiches - low cal bread and sliced turkey and ham.  Under 500 calories for the pair.

The rest of my days low calories were given to a few Halloween candies - still under a 1000 calories for the day.

Now, might I ask where in tarnation IS everyone?  This is a way to start November?  I don't THINK so.  Especially after the disgusting call I had from the pressing plant - same old, same old, discs not ready, machine trouble (when he said that, I shot back, "Try another one, you used that last time"), may have them tomorrow afternoon.  The trouble with that, of course, is when am I supposed to get the CDs into the packages and take them to the post office?  Because my Thursday starts at nine in the morning and goes until after six.  So, I may just hire someone to come and deal with it (if I can find someone at this late date) and then deduct that cost from the invoice.  Even if I don't do that, they're going to have to eat some of this cost, because they have done this on every single release - we give them plenty of time, and they wait until the last possible second to do the job, which leaves them no room for error if they're behind.

HOUSE certainly WAS that good tonight, an excellent episode with its usual medical conundrum that is compelling even for those of us who know nothing about medicine.

I loved Ron Livingston when he had a recurring role on SEX & THE CITY (he's the Carrie boy friend who broke up with her using a Post-It note, one of the show's most memorable episodes), and he was certainly believable tonight as a physician.

Before network TV came on, I enjoyed two more episodes of KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER including the one starring Tom Skerritt as the Devil running for political office in Chicago.

Universal has done a more than adequate job mastering these shows onto DVD. No, there aren't any special features, but just to have the entire series in one package looking as good as they do is prize enough.

For me, however, the night's best show was LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT. Ostensibly about the killing of a child (and the wounding of two others) at school, the show evolved into a gripping hour about hate crimes and a neo-Nazi movement that pulled two HUGE surprises on the viewer during the show's last quarter hour. Amazing drama.

And wonderful acting not only from the show's regulars but from Marcia Gay Harden, Joe Grifasi, and John Rubenstein in other key roles. (And the young actor who plays the troubled Zach on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES also played a key role in tonight's episode of SVU, too.)

The mix actually went very smoothly and quickly, a total of about five hours, and we smoothed out everything, and the audience is now very present in the mix, and the blend between Kevin and the piano is excellent.  I also deleted a few extraneous things, and the CD will run approximately 76 minutes - no songs cut except for the encore, and I only cut about a minutes' worth of dialogue from the whole show.

Back home after a night attending the tale of Sweeney Todd.
Great show. Everything I hope for in a Broadway show. Subtlety of performance, high level of skill on display, great balance of the dark and light, intelligence. I did not know what to expect from the stripped down concept and Lupone, but I was not disappointed.

For about the first 10 minutes I was the only person in the theater, then one couple came in late and sat a long way away from me.  It was great! Well, well, well...what a day this has been.

First off - Welcome Back, DR Joy! And thank you (and everyone else) for your sentiments re. my previous post. I'm still feeling a little 'off' about the whole thing, but I think it's just something I'm going to have to let go.

Secondly: I'm afraid of spiders, snakes, heights, success, failure and intimacy. How's that for honesty? How's that for screwed up?!? :)

Thirdly: Thank you, again, Jose, for getting me into today's event. It was very exciting and most educational. And the door prizes are faboo, too. Do you realize that today was the first time I've seen Carolee perform live?

After the little presentation of LESTAT this afternoon, DR Jose and I managed to snag house seats (third row center) for the first preview performance of THE COLOR PURPLE. All I'll say at this point is that the show is in VERY good condition for a first preview. There's a little fleshing out of certain things that need to be tended to, but in general, it was a very well-done piece of theatre. The Act II opening was wonderfully done and I smell a Tony nomination for at least three - possibly five - of the actors in the show.

DR Rodzinski: I'm SO glad you liked SWEENEY TODD. I overheard someone at THE COLOR PURPLE who jokingly said he liked SWEENEY better than PURPLE. His friend shunned him immediately and said he should take it back or lose a friend. I thought SWEENEY was fantastic - I'm glad you thought so, too.

Is it really only Tuesday?

:)

What another great, verging on surreal, day it was at the 42nd Street Studios, and eventually the Winter Garden Theatre.  We started off the day by singing through the material that was going to be sung at the Group Sales Presentation later in the afternoon.  The number of chills that went up and down my spine as the soloists went through their number soon became innumerable.  Some truly thrilling moments.  -And to think that most of them had just started learning their songs last Saturday!  Since our MD was going to be accompanying them on the piano, I was just able to sit back and listen and enjoy.

Then came a reading of the second act, and then it was time for lunch.  After lunch we reconvened at the Winter Garden for sound check and a brief run-through.  I did get to meet, albeit very briefly, Sir Elton John, but just being in the same room with him for a couple of hours was "enough".  Anne Rice eventually joined the group closer to the "curtain" time too.  -She was in town today doing promo for her new book, "Christ, the Lord" - various TV appearances this morning and then a book-signing.

The presentation went very well, and I even managed to snag a couple of "goody bags"/souvenirs.  -Oh, as did DR Jason.

:)

Re LESTAT - did they really announce, as rumored, that there won't be ANY discounts besides the group sales discount?  That sounds really confident if true.
Title: Re:WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES
Post by: JoseSPiano on November 01, 2005, 10:01:36 PM
Well, as DR Jason just "explained", we managed to get house seats for The Color Purple.  It was their first preview tonight.  Before heading out this morning, I made  sure to print out a copy of the discount offer from Playbill.com. When we stepped up to the box office and asked for two tickets, I noticed that the gentleman behind the glass was pulling up a list of names on his computer screen.   Hmm.. Would magic strike again like it did a few weeks ago when DR Jason got his house seat for Sweeney Todd?  Well, yes it did.  Center Orchestra, Row D.

Once we got into the theatre, I almost thought we were going to be too close since the passarelle came out into the house and covered Row A.   But it was cool being that close - I love seeing actor's faces.  And from what I could tell, we could still see the "big" stage pictures.

The show really is in good shape.  There are some inspired moments/sequences of story-telling, and there are other that are still waiting to be discovered.  And there's one running "joke" that pays itself off many times over as the evening progresses.  -And, yes, I'm being cryptic and secretive about it.

Casting-wise, not really a weak link in the bunch.  I did have one "issue", but it's sort of a minor quibble, and I'll save that comment until after the show gets a few more performances under it's belt.

It was during the intermission that I said, "Hi," to Mr. Tunick and his lovely wife, Lee.  On the way out, I also managed to compliment and congratulate Paul Tazewell, the costume designer.  -The creative staff was gathered at the back of the house as creative staffs are wont to do during previews.  Paul has done a ton of work down at Arena Stage - and many, many other theatres around the country and the world.

Re LESTAT - did they really announce, as rumored, that there won't be ANY discounts besides the group sales discount?  That sounds really confident if true.

Again, as DR Jason stated, Yes, there will be no discounts.

As for the non-selling of the third - or was it second - balcony... That applies to the group sales sales.  I believe - just like in past shows at The Palace - they will still sell those seats at the window at a major discount due to sight-line issues.  -Heck, even The Color Purple is selling the last three rows of the Broadway Theatre for $26.25.

*And a little birdie has mentioned that the AmEx Gold Card and Green Card Exclusive sales have been very good so far.

:)

Thanks for being the messenger, Jose.  When Jim Stanek smiles, he can light up an entire city block.

Thanks again, td!  -And thanks again to the other DRs for their continued well-wishes.

There is sooo much that has happened in just the past two days alone... It's truly has been overwhelming, but in a good sense.  There are things I wish I could share with you, but can't...  I know I would just end up blabbering on and on...  I want to be sure to preserve the "sanctity" of the rehearsal room and the rehearsal process... And there just a lot of things I just want to keep to and for myself right now...  And there are bound to things I've just plain "forgotten"...

I have four more days with this amazing group of artists... And then I head back to down to DC to be with another amazing group of artists...  And after 12 weeks, I will be rejoining this fine bunch of folks...

Life really is good.

:)

*And, yes, Jim Stanek's smile can light up many rooms.  -And I remember his legs during the Forum revival having a similiar effect.  ;)

Did anyone read on B'way.com that last week THE WOMAN IN WHITE brought in nearly $400,000 in just three preview performances? Not bad for a very British show...

I also read that Ms. Maria Friedman will take a leave of absence from the show starting Thursday to have breast surgery due to stage one cancer. The producers expect she'll be back in the show by opening on the 17th. Now THAT's a trouper. ~~Good vibes to Ms. Friedman and her family~~

Hey... If you wanted house seats...  ;)

However, alas, into each life a little rain must fall...

I found out two things today which sort of "dampered" me for a few moments...

1)  They will be recording the cast album in San Francisco right after they close at the Curran.  With the San Francisco pit musicians.  In other words, I will not be getting on the OCR.  -However, neither will any of the other Broadway musicians, so there's some consolation in that regards.  I also understand the logic and "ecomomics" behind the decision.  This will allow them to record the show with a group of musicians that will have played with the cast for almost two full months. Additionally, it will allow the OCR to be available in time for the first Broadway preview.  However, since I will be in the Broadway pit, I will get a chance at the various TV appearances ("The Today Show", "Letterman", "The Tony Awards", etc.) as well as all the other promotional events.  *But the MD has assured me - well, I "assured" him as well - that I would get a Thank You in some small font in the liner notes.  -And on another "bright side", the San Fran musicians will only get eight weeks with the show, eight weeks of employment. I, on the other hand, will have years and years of employment.
:)

2) Due to the size of the pit at The Palace, my keyboard and a few other musicians will most likely be placed in the "auxiliary" pit - in another room outside of the pit.  However, the Associate Conductor said I was more than welcome to hang out in the actual pit during intermission so that I could say HI to people.  ;)  -And it will still be nice being part of a 20-piece Broadway pit orchestra - even if I am in another room.  And I won't always have to wear black too!

Aren't you trying to get "buff" ;D.  Stay away from the candy.

Well, actually, that bit of "news" was for any Hainsies and Kimlets who may have forgotten about the post-Halloween sales.  I've actually done very well the past few days.  Yes, a few indulgences - just a few - but those have been preceded by some very balanced and very healthy meals.

*Actually, I sort of got a head start last week when I home... If the numbers on the scale aren't deceiving me, five pounds already!

And when Mr. Ellison pops back in, I will be sure to pass on your greetings.
