Title: FRITTERIN'
Post by: bk on August 06, 2005, 12:06:32 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you haven't frittered whilst reading the notes, hence it is time for you to post until the cows come home, which will be as soon as they stop fritterin' away their noontime, suppertime, chore time, too.

Favourite Willson songs: "Goodnight My Someone". "Til there Was You" and "That Man Over There".
I'v never really liked much of Molly Brown.  Perhaps I need to have seen it staged. I didn't care for the film.

Good Morning!

...And the hits - and the thundering bass lines - just keep on a-comin' from "The Zoo".  It's not loud from where I'm sitting, but I can hear it.  And it still sounds like quite the party.

-As I mentioned to one of the directors earlier, "This was not mentioned in my brochure."

As for the Topics of the Day...

Person from my past...  Hmm... I've actually managed to catch up with a lot of people in the past few months.  So...  However, right now, I'd have to say my fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Wallace.

And maybe some of my grade school classmates just to see how they turned out, and what they're up to nowadays.

Oh, and the food at Jeff and Betsy's was quite delish!  Betsy made some cheese stuffed pasta (how do you spell tor-ta-lee-nee??) and a salad with big chunks of red and yellow peppers.  Very good.  AND she made their "Semon/Kaufmann" chocolate cake!  The best!  (I should say, and I don't think that they'll mind, but Semon is Betsy's maiden name!)  There was also some cantaloupe/honeydew (I never know which is which) and some strawberries.  I brought some yellow plums that I picked from my sister's very own backyard yellow plum tree!  A good time was had by all!

As for Meredith Willson songs...

I'm really only familiar with the score for The Music Man, and the barbershop quartet numbers in that show always make me smile.

I've seen The Unsinkable Molly Brown on stage, but I have no real favorite tune - although, the title/word/nickname, "Chickapen" can still make me giggle.   However, I do remember hearing a great version of "I Ain't Down Yet" by Toots Thielmann during the course of a late night jazz program on the radio once.  -And I keep meaning to check to see if that's on CD.

And I've somehow avoided Here's Love.  Sort of.  I did record the ballet(?) music once for an upcoming production so the choreographer of said production could start working on it.

I've not come up with a "person" from my past as yet!
Certainly not classmates. Anyone important to me I've kept up with anyway.  There are however people from my present with whom I would like to make contact. Perhaps I shall do so in 2006.

There are three people I would dearly love to find:

First, the girl who Susan Pomeroy is based on.

Second, a girl named Caren Koch, who I knew when I was at LACC (she was in high school at the time, and she and a friend of hers ended up in a silly revue I directed and was in - also in that revue was dear reader PennyO and B'way's Laura Kenyon (then known as Vi Santangelo).  Caren moved to Alaska.

Third, Sue Biederman, a girl I knew in the late eighties/early nineties, who I lost track of.  One of the characters in Rewind is sort of based on her.

Good morning, all!  Yep, 4:30 am again.  The clarinet part is humongous, and I'm stuck in the middle of it. which is where I will most likely be tomorrow as well.  To ,ake matters worse, I have to go in and deal with BABES IN TOYLAND today and tomorrow:  this is my last chance to work with the trusty Tom Murray before he's off to the Ravinia Festival's ANYONE CAN WHISTLE and WINSEBURG OHIO in Philly.  If I did not have to go in, I'd be finished here, so my goal is to edit as much today as possible and only a few hours tomorrow, so I can hopefully finish everything here.  Oy!

DRs Cillaliz and George, great photos!  Thanks for posting them.

FRJose, I can testify that all my 1967-1971 years of summer theatre were just like your past evening; I don't think I slept more than 3-4 hours a night.  I'd come home in August, say hello to my parents, and go to bed for a week.  It's fun but very exhausting.

TOD:  Very schizo, BK:  name a song and find a friend.
Friend search:  Eatl Bush who played Conrad Birdie in what may have been my nadir summer theatre experience.  It was so awful that the director brought a thermos of martinis to rehearsal and was never sober after the rehearsal break.  Our actress playing Kim, who had delusions of adequacy, later moved to LA and married Andrew Prine.
   Meredith Willson songs:
"It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas"
"May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You"
      "My White Knight"
"Belly Up to the Bar, Boys"

Happy Birthday to TD!!!

I'm here at the office and all alone on-line and in the office. The others won't get here until around 11am or noon but since I'm an early person I don't want to wait around until noon to come in and then have the rest of my day taken up by work. It's better working in an empty office anyway as those of you who work in offices probably know.

As already mentioned, My White Knight is a real favorite. Can't think of a person from my past that I would like to find. I don't keep in touch with any high school friends (I graduated from High School 35 years ago next year). Perhaps one or two of my college acquaintances but no one leaps to mind.

I'll check in later after I do some work. After work I will head to 23rd Street and Home Depot to see if they have a reasonably priced wastebasket. If not, it's off to K-Mart at 34th Street.

Vibes and good thoughts to dear Derek. And Tom too!

Once when we were in Florida and taking a tour of the Space Center, we were given the opportunity to get off the bus and walk around on the tarmac/runway where the shuttles land, and you can bet your life I sure did that!

It was also interesting to see the rocket gantries and the HUGE 'garages' where those things live when they are not flying!

Great rehearsal last night, but crisis and drama with the costumes, some of which are a bit revealing.

Director & costumer (his partner) have threatened to quit and things are rough in River City.  I am not sure of the outcome, but as member of the creative team AND a member of the Board of Directors - I am kind of stuck in the middle.

I like it better when ALL the drama is onstage, and I wish it could always be thus.

PIPPIN had a bit of trouble with his microphone pack - and there was much comment on the red boxer briefs he had chosen to wear.  Said Pippin: "Well you have all seen the DVD - I thought I would show you the PIPPIN BVD!"

Great photos from last night's gathering in Portland.  Thanks to DRs George and Cillaliz for sharing!

Happy Birthday, DR td!

TOD:  Well, "Marian the Librarian," of course, but I also love the theology in "Are You Sure?" from The Unsinkable Molly Brown:

"When you pray for something and it's no go,
Don't come around with 'I told you so.'
Your prayer was answered - the answer was 'NO.'"

In fact, Molly Brown is one of my favorite shows and a role that I'd love to have been able (singing-wise) to play.  I saw it (early 1960's?) at the then-newly refurbished Fisher Theatre in Detroit with Karen Morrow in the lead and Harve Presnell (be still, my heart) as Johnny.

TOD - out on a limb here, I'd say that "Dolce far Niente" is my favorite, followed closely by "My White Knight" then "Pine Cones and Holly Berries/It's Beginning to Look a lot like Christmas."
"Till There was You" always registers strong emotions with me, while the nifty rhymes of "Belly Up to the Bar Boys" always makes me laugh.
I love the dazzling staging, mostly from three takes, of "He's My Friend" in the film of MOLLY BROWN.

This week concludes another exciting adventure in the serial which is my life this year:

The restaurant I've been working in since April was sold, with the new owners and management staff taking over on Monday August 1st.   This didn't effect most of the staff as the clientele is quite seasonal - when you're on the river and the marina, the boating season abruptly comes to a close around Labor Day - and I had planned on staying through October when a new restaurant opens, owned by the former owner, of which he wanted me to be part of. . .
BUT, here's the sticky-wicket - my former place of empoyment (Sam Morgan's Clubhouse) phoned me on Wednesday night to see if I would come back to work with them when they re-open on September 1st!
So, we shall see which road I shall take. . . .

May all the DRs day today be filled with happiness and cheer, it's not just a day for me, but a day for all my dear friends.

Person I'd most like to find:  Judy Robb (her married name was Clements), who was my seventh grade teacher, but left in the middle of the year.  The whole class had gone to see her in a dinner theater production of Barefoot in the Park, and I believe she left mid-year to take an acting job.  She was the first to encourage a love of theater in my years at the Yeshivah of Flatbush, not the only one, but happened to be the first and most memorable.

This week's trivia question looks like one of those (like the Columbo question a few weeks ago) where I'll learn a lot researching on the internet, but I'll probably  never get it.  Just like I'm so deficient in my knowledge of tryouts that didn't make it in, I'm woefully lacking in my knowledge of touring companies. (Well, there was the Bway INTO THE LIGHT, but that was a Turin company.  Sorry!)  But, in the words of Meredith Willson, I ain't down yet!

Does any DR have the Remastered Decca 2000 reissue of the PIPPIN OBC CD?

There is one person in my past whom I would like to find.  The last I heard of John F. Hightower (Louisiana-born), best damned bartender in Pittsburgh, was that he headed to Tacoma to live with his sister Crystal.  He was a great, great friend to me for half a decade, but once he moved, he cut all ties with the 'burgh.

Thanks to the internet, however, I tracked down a wonderful photographer and theater buddy whom I hadn't seen for nigh onto fifteen years; now we meet every week for coffee at Barnes and Noble; for the past two weeks, he's brought his 17 year old son along.

It's the theater people I've worked with whom I'd like to catch up with.

Favorite Merideth Wilson songs - Anything from "The Music Man", I find that to be just an enjoyable evening.  I've seen Molly Brown once and was't impressed with the score too much, it was a long time ago.

The only person that I'd like to find from my past, and it's not from high school, it's actually from the Internet is a dude named Sam Manino.  He and are were best internet buddies when  I first got online in 1995.  It's been about 8 years that I haven't heard from him, I hope he's doing well and I often wondered what ever became of him.  Then there is my first ever partner, John, whom I often think about and wonder whatever happened to him and hope that he's well.

BK, when I return from my camping trip I will surely do my best in trying to locate some of those you are looking for...with the women it is  difficult as they likely don't have the same last names...I did find a few listings for a Tom Callas' in the LA area...one was born in 1965, so not likely the same one, but maybe the other ones could be....and there was one listed in San Francisco.

Randi Kallan can probably be located, I will just need some more sleuthing time.

Good Morning!

Well, I let myself sleep until 11:00!  -And I didn't even drink last night at "The Zoo". -God forbid, I did, since I was basically still fasting yesterday - two days in a row - although, I did knosh on some pretzels at "The Zoo" just in case I somehow ended up with a beer in my hand... Which I didn't.

And, yes, it is a quiet morning here in the dorm, although, I can hear people starting to wake up since they most likely have crew and concessions' duties today.

It's a beautiful day outside my window too!  I hope to get out there soon...

As for the Trivia Question... I may just attempt an answer this week.  -Which would make it my first.  We shall see...

First of all, what the heck does the "F" stand for in "FR"?!?!?  HUH!?!?!?!  ;)

And as for your evenings in summer theatre from 1967-1971...  Explains a lot!

;D

-I really did have a good time last night.  I'm just still so "new" here, so my circle is still relatively small.  But it was fun people watching, and if my allergies hadn't started acting up - my skin was starting to do funny things - I probably would have stayed longer.

Zoo 202!  We need details, DRJOSE. What is the trendy actor wearing in Williamsburg this year?

Well...  At least for last night's "festivities"... As little as is legally possible.  However, I did not spot any thongs...  However, I did not spot anything in place of a thong either in most cases.

How 'do, crew? I let myself sleep in this morning. I've been up for about half an hour...

I love THE MUSIC MAN and had a great time doing it. I'd love to do it again. I was the tenor in the quartet.

There are a couple of people I'd like to see from my past, but as SWW said, I think we're better off without each other.

Speaking of people from my past, the "object of my affection" from Chicago (remember that from last summer?) called yesterday. Guess who's coming to New York for a visit in October and wants to see me after not contacting me for over 8 months? I'm not sure how to feel about that...

DR TD: HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

FJL: How's the arm?

DR JOSE: Be good up there... ;)

The weatherman PROMISED us a weekend full of sunshine and warm temps.  So why, I ask you, did I wake up this morning to find a solid gray sky and temps in the low 60's?  It's a scandal, I say.  When I checked the weather online again, the weatherman had grudgingly allowed "mostly sunny" instead of "sunny" but he still insists that by this afternoon we will have our summer weather back.  I'm not entirely convinced, but we shall see.

I had to check weather online, by the way, because my cable seems to be going out on me.  If I turn it on, I get a few minutes of blurry pic, then the screen goes totally black  Unseemly.

THE DUCK FOLLIES!

Last night, after putting in a couple extra hours at work than I'd been scheduled for, I got most of my shopping done for the meal.  I'm still missing some basil for the chilled fruit soup I've planned for the appetizer, and the store where I work at was out of beets for the veggie accompaniment, but most everything is at hand.  I even splurged on a very nice Pinot Noir, and we've a small bottle of Grand Marnier for the sauce.

That was the good news.  The bad news came when I checked the schedule for next week at work.  Monday, der B's birthday, I'm scheduled to work from three in the afternoon until nine at night.  OOPS!  Even if I could get right back to home and start cooking after my shift, it would still take the bird up to two hours to roast properly.

Then, to my relief, der B told me that his daughter had called again.  She needs him to head up Monday to lad-sit; her day care has cancelled out yet again.  We're going to have to postpone his birthday celebration by a day.

My bet is, his daughter won't even remember that there's a birthday going on.  Maybe he'll leak that news to the grandlads while she's at work.  They can celebrate together!  And keep it a secret!  That would be fun!

Maybe I can get der B a cake from our bakery section to take up with him!   :D

There seems to be a bit of confusion in these here parts.

On the one hand, a fricassee is a stew of meat (often chicken) and other goodies that is served in a white sauce.  A chicken pot pie is a kind of fricassee.

Fritters, on the other hand, are pieces of meat or fruit or veggies that are encased in a batter and fried.  I like my zucchini fritters very much, thank-you!  For that matter, sweet and sour pork, before the sauce, is frittered pork.

Clearly, fritters are not fricasseed.  So why is the word of the day fricassee, while the title of today's thread "Fritterin' "?

My head hurts, and I'm quite willing to share.

Don't give up the ship
even when you think it's sinking
and you don't know what to do .
Don't give up your dream
even though you may be thinking it never will come true .
Life has its own ideas
of how things come about;
and if you just hang in there
life is gonna work it out .
Help is on the way
from places you don't know about today .
From friends you may not have met yet .
Believe me when I say I know .
Help is on the way .

Ira Levin in an interview in Dramatist Magazine about Drat! The Cat! has this to say about our own BK:  In 1997 a superb studio recording was made, with our permission and cooperation.  The producer, Bruce Kimmel, dug up the original Broadway orchestrations and assembled a first-rate cast, including Susan Egan, Jason Graae, Judy Kaye, and Elaine Stritch.  With the release of the CD, Drat's cult status grew."

I picked up the Gary Cooper box set.  I find it amusing that two of the three Beau Geste stills  displayed on the packaging are actually from the 1926 silent Ronald Colman version of the film.

Good Afternoon!

I'm back from seeing Tom Stoppard's On the Razzle.  What a nice way to spend the afternoon.  Such great writing, and some very good performances.  The bon mots, malapropisms, etc., were flying left and right.  -And it was interesting to catch which "jokes" the actors chose to push and which they chose to just let go by.  However, in some of those scenes, the witticisms come fast and furious, and if one chose to land every single joke and wait for a response, then that would have made for one very long and pause-filled evening.  I shall have to go and read it to catch the ones I missed - or at least try to get in again sometime next weekend.

:)

Classic![/b][/size]
Title: Re:FRITTERIN'
Post by: JoseSPiano on August 06, 2005, 03:54:50 PM
And for those of you unfamiliar with the piece, here's some info from the program notes:
Quote

On the Razzle is adapted from the play Einen jux will er sich machen, written in 1942 by the great Viennese satirist Johann Nestroy.

Just as William Shakespeare took the story of Antony and Cleopatrap from Plutarch's History, this is the story which inspired Thornton Wilder to write the classic American drama The Matchmaker, which in turn inspired the much loved musical Hello Dolly!  The play you see tonight is actually the subplot of Wilder's work as well as the musical: two shop clerks set out for the big city to have a bit of fun and find a lot more than they bargained for.

And even though Zangler, played by Michael Mckean, got the final bow, I'd have to say the two stars of On the Razzle are actually the characters of Weinberl and Christopher (Barnaby and Cornelius), played here by Robert Stanton and John Lavelle.  It was very nice seeing that story fleshed out a bit more.

I see on Playbill there is now a play about Sioux City's own Eppie Friedman aka Esther Pauline Friedman aka Ann Landers.  There are a lot of fun stories about how Eppie and Po-po were the biggest gossips at Central High School and loved to stir up trouble.

If you don't know Po-po, is her twin sister, Pauline Esther Friedman aka Abigail Van Buren aka Dear Abby.

I'm back from looking at two theaters.  First we looked at the Globe Theater, which is modeled on the Old Globe.  It gave me the willies, and we will not be doing our play there.  Then we looked at a theater in Hollywood which we all really liked.  The neighborhood used to be very sketchy, but it's come back in the last couple of years, and it's only a block-and-a-half walk to Musso and Frank.  The size of the stage works for us, they have lots of good lighting equipment, the seats are comfy.  We're waiting to hear about availability now.  It appears that there's nothing in there except acting classes - the theater is run by actress Natalia Nogulich.  We'll see what happens.

Good Evening!

The director and I had a lovely dinner at the Red Herring.  -And the bartender there really knows how to mix a Cosmo - that was smoooooth.  :)

It truly is a beautiful summer evening here in Williamstown.  Watching the sun set behind the mountains...  A light breeze blowing...  Even crickets chirping in the distance.  Idyllic.

Later on tonight, I shall venture out to catch one of the Assistant Director Projects at 11:30.  Then it will be right back here to rest up for tomorrow's 10:00 rehearsal.  However, due to the fact that the Company members will be assisting with the changeover in the Mainstage, we're only rehearsal three hours tomorrow.  We get them for three hours, then they go to the other director for another three hours.  And then they start their eight hour(?!?!?!) crew/changeover call.  Some of them are called from 4:00pm-Midnight; some are called from Midnight-8:00pm; and the final shift is 8:00am-4:00pm on Monday.  Ugh!  -But that's why they're here... And why they've paid the money to be here.

*And that's why I'm happy staying in the pit and behind a piano.  ;)

DR Joey - I hope you enjoy SITPWG.  Truly one of my favorite shows of all time - if not THE favorite - for many, many reasons.

-And, again, I'm sorry I'll miss you during your trip to NYC.  *If you need a place to stay, my room is free...

WOW!  The Globe!  Is there a smaller stage in that complex?

And I believe I walked by the other theatre you mentioned many a time on my walks to and from The Hudson this time last year.  I remember the signs for the acting classes - and that name!

I have been here for the past 2 hours trying to fix some photos on Adobe photoshop.  May I say how lovely this program is when it comes to fixing pics.  But it does not make it easy to save!  This is driving me nuts.

And now someone i saved the pics to my disk (don't even know how), and i loaded them to walmart.ca.  But now i can only find 1 of the 10 pics i loaded in my photolab.  What is going on????

Btw, I had to tape Big Brother. :(

Thank you for the dance DR Jose. I'm so often a wallflower or a chaperone these days.

I'm sure there's way of making some punny remark with chap her own but I'm known for never going with low humour. Not.

DRJose, I got a lovely email from Curtis about you this evening.  I won't tell you any more than that.  I had a great session with Tom Murray today, and we've a small bit of work tomorrow.  I'm about a day behind on what I wanted to accomplish by Monday on THE GOLDEN APPLE, but I will definitely finish on Tuesday, I do believe.  And now, good night!

Love SITPWG! I need to watch it again as I feel there are important subtle things that I missed. And maybe I am being daft but I haven't quite figured out the symbolism of everything being black and white in Act 2.

Black and white in Act 2. I don't rememer that. All colour in my version!!!
I too am a fan of SITPWG.  Very moving piece of theatre. A journey worth the making.

Sorry! Not everything. Just the cutouts of George in the art museum and the buildings on the island... I was thinking there was some reason for them to be black and white instead of color like the rest of the set.

Ahhh and now I feel dense. No matter, I still can't wait to watch it again. I also need to find my Sweeney Todd dvd which has dissappeared somehow.

Just back from comforting a friend who's having boy issues. We went for a nice walk around Astoria. I shouldn't have worn flip-flops, though - the soles of my feet are blistered and swollen now. Oh well...it's worth it, I guess. He seemed genuinely grateful that I took time out to listen to him.

In good times...and bad times...I'll be on your side forever more...

That's what friends are for...

DR Joey: When are you in the City? What are you seeing while you're here? You should stop by MTI - I can give you the grand tour and if you contact me before you come in, I might be able to scrounge up a couple of door prizes.

Good Morning!

Back from a very entertaining - although late-houred - double bill of Harry Kondoleon's The Fairy Garden and Anthony Minghella's Cigarettes & Chocolate.  Both pieces were directed by the Assistant Director interns here at WTF.  Very good work from them and from the actors.

...And it's actually a little chilly outside right now... which means it's very nice in my dorm room.  I hope to sleep well.

And speaking of sleeping... Rehearsal in seven and a half hours...

Goodnight.

No posts in an hour.  I just had a long phone call with my NY assistant Jonathan, so I'm still writing the notes, but since no one is posting I'll just take my sweet little ol' time about it.

I've been making a new DVD cover for BK's very own What If? (that I received most graciously from BK himself!).  I want to put it in a regular DVD case, so I took the mini-poster that Jose most kindly sent me during the run of the show and I scanned it and made a DVD cover.  I think it looks quite good...if I do say so myself. ;)
