Morning all.

Work CDs: How Now, Dow Jones (OBC - is there any other recording?); Shenandoah (OBC); Pajama Game (OBC); 110 in the Shade (OBC); The Most Happy Fella (1992 OBC); Follies (OBC); A Wrinkle in Swingtime (a great standards album by Elena Bennett with Fred Barton (from Miss Gulch Returns) and his Orchestra)

Home DVD: We will watch 200 American some time this weekend, another video gift from the generous and lovely Mr. Moore.

Home VCR: While I ride the bike I will probably finish watching the final episodes of the Sopranos. Anthony's mother taped them since we no longer have HBO. I've watched them off and on since we got the tapes quite a while ago. She will tape the new episodes as well and I will watch them when I get around to it.

Home CD: Anthony went to the library on Wednesday and found some nice CDs. Florodora, a couple of very good Gershwin CDs and the London cast recording of Sail Away (produced by the company that shall not be named) and the studio recording of Billion Dollar Baby.

I saw Ring of Fire last night. It's a well performed country music concert in a Broadway theatre (the Barrymore or Ethel Barrymore depending on how much you know about that theatre) but what it is not, IMHO, is a Broadway musical (even in the Jukebox category). There are some very nice moments and Jarod Emmick is very good as one of the pseudo Johnny Cash figures but it doesn't add up to much. The few snatches of dialogue (maybe two pages total in 2 hours) that try to string the piece together don't add anything to the piece. It doesn't try to tell the story of Johnny Cash. Instead, it uses his music to "tell the story of America". Uhhh, I don't think so. There are three different "Johnny Cash" type performers playing at different periods in the show (Emmick being one of them) and while they are all good they don't have much to do except sing country songs, walk with a swagger and play guitars. Well over half the cast members are making their Broadway debuts in the show. It's being done under an AGVA (American Guild of Variety Artists) contract, not an Equity contract (not that it makes much difference, just thought I would mention that for those of you interested).

I liked the first act but I'm not a big fan of hard core country music and I got bored in the second act.

I don't know how this show will be received by the critics or the theatre going audience. At 7:30 when I walked past the TKTS Booth tickets were still available and the performance was not sold out. Even though Country Music seems to be popular in New York I think it's going to be a hard sell for this show. The press keeps talking about a new kind of Broadway musical but I didn't see anything new or inventive or exciting. The stage is bare except for the musical instruments and a screen (thank you Woman in White) which uses projections of rural America and train tracks and honky tonks, etc. Except for the Grand Old Opry sequence the cast looks like they came off the street and walked on stage. That's good, I guess??? I don't know. I didn't know what to expect when I went and I'm still puzzling about what I saw. I got heavily discounted tickets ($30) but if I had paid full price ($101.25 or $86.25, NOTHING less than that unless you get your tickets at TKTS or through TDF or another discount house) I think I would have been a mite upset. Or, maybe I'm wrong. Concert prices have certainly gone up also, so I'm told. I can't remember the last time I was at a concert.

Anyway, that's my take on the next entry in the Jukebox Musical sweepstakes. I'll be surprised if it's a hit but I don't know if it has the potential for any kind of run.

Later, gaters.

Listed in the cast as a "worker" is the soon to be well known choreographer, Peter Gennaro. One of the singers/chorus listed is Virginia Martin, who played young Belle in the original production of Little Me.

The men's figure skating long programs were overall so much improved over what I saw the other night.  Much better music choices and choreography (though still not as interesting as I recall from previous Winter Olympics.)  And like DR Matt said last night, this new scoring is full of holes.  It's still incomprehensible to me how the silver and bronze medal winners took a few spills during their programs and still scored high enough to gain the podium while a few others skated flawless and artistically pleasing programs and wound up with lower scores.  This system needs revamping again.

Another little tid-bit of theatre trivia I learned from Chita Riveria--Peter Gennaro was responsible for the choreography of "America" and "The Dance At The Gym" in WSS.

Ben - Concert prices HAVE gotten insane in recent years.  For recent Elton John and Bette Midler concerts, orchestra tickets at Radio City were being sold for $250, and that's AT THE BOX OFFICE or through Ticketmaster (not scalpers), and for ordinary orchestra seats, not premium or anything like that.  I think the part of the audience for which theatergoing is a special event (a few times a year) has gotten used to paying such prices for other events, especially if they're on expense accounts, which I think is a theory for why premium seats on Broadway are somehow being sold, espceially for shows that have managed to position themselves as "hot" tickets.

Dan - Let me state that I loved Chita Rivera's show - twice.  But there's some sense in the way she describes it (at least when I saw it) that Gennaro's contributions to WEST SIDE STORY have been kept as a secret, and she's revealing it now, which is just not the case.  I'm really not particularly in the know about much of anything, and I remember knowing about this info even back when I was in college, in the late 1970's.

As for yesterday...

Lestat rehearsals were fun.  I really do love being in the rehearsal room.  And since I'm not back with the production "officially" yet, I was able just to sit back and observe and enjoy the proceedings.  However, I did end up lending my right hand for a bit to fill in some counter-melodies in one number.  That was fun.

:)

I also got to re-meet everyone, and also to meet the new members of our cast.  They've expanded the ensemble by two - one man, one woman.  A great group of people.

Does anyone else find the Olympic sport of curling very funny?  I realize they have to be in great condition and have great skill to do what they do, but as Skip pointed out, maybe I'm amused because what they do with their brooms (?) on the ice around the disc reminds me of housecleaning.

OH!

And the rehearsal studio complex was quite packed with talent yesterday.  One one floor, the NYCO was rehearsing The Most Happy Fella - I caught a few seconds of "Big D".  On another floor, the touring cast of Spamalot was doing a run-thru, and the Broadway cast was there to watch them too.  It was great seeing all those guys again too - Kevin Burrows, Christopher Sieber, James Ludwig, etc.  And I also found out that a couple of my friends are with the tour.  Even Mike Nichols was in attendance.  -Oh, and Hank Azaria is really cute when he almost runs in to you as you're trying to leave the rehearsal room.  ;)

Well, it is news to me.  But you are right about the way that Chita announces it, like Gennaro had been slighted for never receiving any official credit.  I learned long ago that kind of thing has always gone on with credited creators farming out some their work to others.  So while I found this particular piece of info interesting, it wasn't shocking.

I had to cut out of Lestat rehearsal for a bit to attend my "Orientation Meeting" for Local 802.  I really wasn't looking forward to going, and almost bagged it, but decided to get it out of the way now.

It was a great meeting.  Very no nonsense, very "plain English", and very funny at times.  There were about five of us in attendance for the meeting, and our "orienter", Summer.  She was very personable and had a great sense of humor.  A couple of us, myself included, were even able to get in a little bit of networking.  And it was also very cool finding out some of the services and assistance that Local 802 office offers.  I guess I wasn't expecting much initially due to my experience with the DC Local.  However, since the DC Local is housed in one small office building in about four offices, and the NY Local is housed in nine floors of prime NYC real estate...

As Sally sings... "I'm so glad I came."

They've never done it quite that way. The top six (or seven in some years) have always drawn lots to see who would skate where in the final group. That's still being done.

I finished my day by attending a screening of the new Matthew McConaughey and Sara Jessica Parker movie, "Failure To Launch".  One of my roommates had been given a pass, but was not able to go, so...  DR Jason ended up joining me for the movie too.

A fun movie.  We both liked it.  It does lean toward "chick-flick", but there's plenty in there for everyone.  And we still liked the movie even though we had to watch it from the front of the theatre.  We just treated it like we were watching an IMAX movie.  However, being that close made it much easier to admire Matthew MacConaughey's physique - which is "featured" for a good chunk of the opening minutes - as well as his co-stars, Justin Bartha and Bradley Cooper.  -Actually, I found both of them a bit "distracting", but a in a good way.

I don't think I'd say run right out to the theatres when it opens, but I don't think you'd be disappointed if you ended up going to see it.  -And Terry Bradshaw and Kathy Bates play the parents... Very funny and touching.  OH!  However, I do have one "warning": you will get to see more of Terry Bradshaw than you ever wanted to see.   -And from the front row of the theatre... that was more than enough!

;D

Re: the Olympics and the men's free skate.  Well I fell asleep just before the last skater came on to NBC (japanese). It was so late. What is up with showing it at 11:30pm????

I would be interested to know what the US commentators said about him. The Canadian ones thought he had a chance to beat the Canadian who was in 3rd.  Perhaps though his combo jump was seen as 2 separate jumps (and then he exceeded his allowed jumps?).

The new scoring system is extremely confusing.  Basically there was nobody who had enough on paper to beat the russian even before any of them skated.

I disagree with what most of you said about the russian winner.  He was really good. Maybe not outstanding. But he was clearly the winner. He was the only one who skated without falling. And all his jumps and movements looked easy. That is what I like to see in the winner, someone who jumps effortlessly.

I wonder if any of your opinions are biased by the somewhat mean comments from the American commentators. I thought they were extremely harsh on him, to the point of almost sounding ridiculous.

And they were extremely nice to the silver and bronze winners.  I guess they prefer artistry over skill.

Title: Re:THE WEEKEND COMETH
Post by: Matt H. on February 17, 2006, 07:35:39 AM
As Scott Hamilton said about Plushenko, he had no program. There is more (or should be more) to skating than jumps and flailing arm movements. There was no choreography, no "whole" to the program. France's Surya Bonelay used to do the same kind of skating: a series of big jumps attached to uninteresting linking between the jumps, and the jumps were solid but NOT effortless. They had hard, sometimes jerky landings and sometimes a wide swinging free leg, not great technique. When I think of past champions who combined huge jumps with true artistry (John Curry, Robin Cousins come immediately to mind), his winning effort came up sadly lacking.

You have to understand that all of those NBC comentators were experienced, highly honored skaters who know the difference between raw technique and technique plus presentation. They didn't deny his jumping ability. But they all know that he was honored for the huge jumps, not the grace with which they weren't done.

Subject: NOT THE BEST IDEA FOR YOUR VALENTINE LOL

THESE ARE ENTRIES TO A WASHINGTON POST COMPETITION ASKING FOR A RHYME WITH THE MOST ROMANTIC FIRST LINE BUT THE LEAST ROMANTIC SECOND LINE:

(1) Love may be beautiful, love may be bliss
But I only slept with you, because I was pissed.

(2) I thought that I could love no other
Until, that is, I met your brother.

(3) Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet, and so are you.
But the roses are wilting, the violets are dead, the sugar bowl's empty and so is
     your head.

(4) Of loving beauty you float with grace
If only you could hide your face.

(5) Kind, intelligent, loving and hot;
This describes everything you are not.

(6) I want to feel your sweet embrace
But don't take that paper bag off of your face.

(7) I love your smile, your face, and your eyes -
man, I'm good at telling lies!

(8) My darling, my lover, my beautiful wife:
Marrying you screwed up my life.

(9) I see your face when I am dreaming.
That's why I always wake up screaming.

(10) My love, you take my breath away.
What have you stepped in to smell this way?

(11) My feelings for you no words can tell,
Except for maybe "go to -----".

(12) What inspired this amorous rhyme?
Two parts vodka, one part lime.

MEDIA CHECK:

Car CD player: more from Elton John's Hits discs.

DVD: Last night der Grampa introduced the grandlads to the musical Little Shop of Horrors.  (They are also why we had John in the CD player.)  They enjoyed it a great deal, but little William couldn't understand why the girl group kept popping up everywhere.

And I'm sick and tired of having my days off consumed by running errands for Magic Mommy.  This time, before picking up the grandlads, we had to drive all over Delaware to get her fifteen pounds of dry ice.  She's found this magic formula stunt to pull with the stuff for a Cub Scouts ceremony.  If only she'd pay more attention to the kids than to the surface glitz...

I've a question for BK and all our assorted DRs:

How much attention to you pay to movie ratings?

Der B and I find ourselves paying attention to the PG-13 rating lately.  Whenever we can, we screen films we think the grandlads might want to see that have the rating, to determine how appropriate the film is for them.

Example #1: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire had the PG-13 rating, but we decided it was appropriate for them, and it was a film they wanted to see.

On the other hand, Example #2: King Kong we decided would be much too intense, with too much graphic violence and portrayal of death for them.  Fortunately, they weren't begging to see that one.

Example #3: Billy Madison, un filme de Adam Sandler, has turned up over at their daycaregiver's.  It has been rated PG-13 for language and crude humor.  So, of course, Alex has been quoting the film's worst dialogue at school.  The daycaregiver doesn't seem to mind, but we do.

Anyone else out there have any reactions?

As of now, the batter is chilling, so I'm off to the store, the fitness room and the laundry room, not necsessarily in that order.

The reason they can fall and still win is that they fell attempting a quad and made the revolutions, not the landing.  You get something like 5.75 points for doing the jump and only lose one if you fall, so you have a net gain in points for making the attempt.   That was the strategy of the bronze medal winner - who I thought was a real cutie!

As for the Olympics...

With the new scoring system, did they also discontinue the practice of having the skaters skate in reverse order according to their scores in the short program?  -Or is that more a World's competition practice?

-I was just hoping to see more of the higher-scoring skaters by the time I got home last night.

The short program is random. The long program is in groups. The groups go lowest place to highest place with the leaders in the last group, but within the group they are random or something, I'm not sure how that is determined

I think that Plushenko totally deserved the gold and is in a class above the rest of the skaters.  His short program was beautiful with the choreography and everything the old system would have rewarded.  He worked the new system in the long program. He could have focused more on the choreography, but I think he missed his gold 4 years ago and was bound and determined to make sure he got it this time.

His skating was wonderful to watch and I'm very happy for him

DR MattH, I remember Surya Bonelay and I find no comparison between her and the new Russian champion.  She truly had great jumps that were so physical, with very little artistry in between.  And while Plushenko might not be the most artistic figure skater ever, I personally found him to have some substance between his jumps.

The judges have apparently agreed with you, DR Jennifer.  Although, I think Dick Button's and Scott Hamilton's comments last night about his long program being a series of jumps interrupted by arm movements (in lieu of actual skating techniques) to be quite accurate.  When a skater is of the calibre of Plushenko, however, that seldom impacts the scoring.

That has been the case for many Russian champions over the years...although they continue to be champions. Slutskaya is all jumps and arm flailings...she has no artisitc grace, although she possesses athletic grace.

Plushenko does it with style and conviction.  His jumps seal the deal...plus he has the perfect phsyique for his sport...he "looks" better on ice than most other skaters.

I think that was part of Michelle Kwan's staying power....she had the perfect form and possessed unusual artistic grace.  Her downfall, over the years, has been her reluctance to beef up her jumps.  Her last coach, Rafael Artunian, was hired specifically to help her with her jumps, as that is his coaching specialty.  I understand she did a triple-triple combination for the U.S. Olympic Committee members who evaluted her before extending an invitation to join the Torino contingent.

My least favorite skater over the years has been Alexei Yagudin...his flailings and ice-chipping staccato footwork were great audience pleasers but offered nothing rewarding for the memory of his performances, IMO.  Sadly, Brian Joubert has taken some coaching advice from Yagudin and his programs' footwork sequences bear a copycat look without much originality or value as a result.

Viktor Petrenko (Gold Medal, 1992) was a much better "total package" skater, as was Alexei Urmanov (Gold Medal, 1994), although neither possessed Yagudin's athletic power as a jumper.  Yagudin's jumps always had a stronger edge to them than Plushenko's although each did them beautifully....but it was always Plushenko's who seemed to be part of a greater whole, to me.

Kulik (Gold Medal, 1998) had a quad, but was pretty much just a jumper without content in his program.   Both Elvis Stojko and Todd Eldridge could easily have beaten him with clean programs that had no quads as their artistic and technical content was far more substantial than Kulik's. Both made mistakes...Eldridge just crumbled in each Olympics.

And that's part of what the commentators were remarking on about most of the skaters last night...that they were suffering Olympics-itis....they were tight, not given to risk-taking or simply joyful skating.

Plushenko, for my money, outskated Yagudin in the last Olympics' long program, but his error in the short program cost him the gold.

There wasn't a skater on ice last night who deserved the Gold more than Plushenko, IMO.

Last year, one of the first events at our new event center in town was Stars on Ice.  I had never been to one, so I decided to get the best seat available and really enjoy the evening. Well it turns out the best seats are on the ice!!  There was one row of seats on the ice. The skaters were, at times, literally 4-5 feet away from us. It was incredible to be there and really see their facial expressions and hear them talk to each other.  Sale and Peltier were there as well as the Russians who also got the gold and the rest of usual suspects on Scott Hamilton's tour.

I didn't go this year, but if I ever go again, I will gladly pay extra to get one of those seats again.

Canadian men have included some very strong skaters but they, like many American men, have not had luck on their side at the Olympics. Two-time world champion Brian Orser won two silver medals, Browning was a four-time world champion who couldn't get even a bronze for his collection, Stojko won several world championships but couldn't quite get to the gold either. And I fully agree that Plushenko blew everyone else away last night with his jumping, and since so much of the point totals are given for content, well, there was no one who matched him there. It was the presentation score that I thought was severely padded.

Still, he put together two excellent technical programs with well executed content no one could match, and that's what it takes to win the gold now.

Old timers like me remember when one could rack up a huge lead in school figures and not even have to do double jumps in the free skate to win. Trixie Shuba, the 1972 Olympic champion, did it with ease. No one even came close to catching her though she was outskated in the free skate by all four of the skaters who scored beneath her in total points.

I found out today that my 3 1/2 year old grandneice's favorite TV program is DANCING WITH THE STARS! I thought that was wonderful and now I think it might be the right time for Uncle Mike to introduce Taylor to movie musicals!

I am thinking some Shirley Temple or Judy Garland films.

And now for my first Bollywood movie of the long weekend (I am hoping to get at least 2 or 3 out of the way this weekend!)...

GOMTI KE KINARE (1972) starring some of my favorite Indian actress...Mumtaz, Helen, and and the lovely Meena Kumari in one of her last movie roles before she passed away.

I think this is one of those women's pictures.

DR DakotaCelt - what did you see at the Salt lake Olympics?  I am very jealous, I've always wanted to go to a Winter Games

It was a pre-Olympic gathering for members of the Curling team... Relatives of two of the team members arranged for us to watch on large screen tellys the broadcasts. We watched Figure skating and curling... I rather like the sport of curling.

DR Jennifer, curling is surprisingly popular in these parts...

Darn!  Now I want to listen to WSS and all I have handy is the Japanese recording.  Oh, well--that will do.

Last night, I got a notice from the post office that a package has arrived for me and needs to be signed for and picked up.  It's from Footlight!  I ordered the Prague cast recording of Les Misérables (http://www.footlight.com/product.cfm?product_id=32151)[/b][/u] back in September and it's finally here!! ;D I took my car in to get the 93,000 and 96,000 mile services and they're coming to pick me up now.  When I get my car, I'm going to the post office to get my package!!

Also in my CD player:  two CDs that I just got yesterday, the original soundtrack to "Meet Me in St. Louis" and the original cast recording of A Family Affair.  But before those will be the CDs that I received from DakotaCelt and some songs by The Manhattan Transfer from an Internet buddy from Utah.

In my VCR:  a tape to tape tonight's shows.  I'm ushering for a solo acoustic guitar concert here in Olympia by Leo Kottke.  Last night, I watched "Battlestar Galactica," but didn't get to either "Lost" or "Invasion."  I pretty much have the three-day weekend free, so they will be watched very soonly.

In my DVD player:  "Groundhog Day" (still), through kind courtesy of DR Matt H!  After that will be some movies from Netflix and one that I rented at a local video store, "The Machinist."

DR Ginny - I rather like "As I Am".  I used to play in a CCM band when I was in college, and there's still something appealing about pop music with a "message".  My favorite track has to be her tribute to Sandy Patti, complete with all the Sandy Patti modulations and high notes.

I also remember hearing Kristin during the Metropolitan Opera Council rounds, and the sound of her voice on this record sounds very close to her sound back then.  The 'cutesy' edge - which can sometimes get on my nerves - is not there.

To get our R rating, we had to remove on "f" word (we didn't actually remove it - we just took the sound out for that word - you can still see Stephen Nathan mouth it) and we had to delete one "humping" shot (app. 2 seconds) from the stunt c*!k scene - I missed the "f" word (it had an "er" at the end of it), but I certainly didn't miss the humping shot.

Well, DR Jose, since I respect your opinion and since my one listen was in the car (not always the best way to enjoy music), I will give this CD another try.  DH Richard and I are not  huge fans of contemporary inspirational music, preferring traditional hymns and classical sacred music.  It has made church-going somewhat problematic for us; even the church where he grew up and we were married, which was renowned for its music program, has gone "pop."

DR Cillaliz - "sleeping in" for me is anything past 7am!  Actually, I will have to get up tomorrow morning and help DH Richard get packed up to go shape-note singing all day.  He's taking several food items to contribute to the potluck, but at least he'll leave a doughnut for me to have with my coffee.  Later in the day, I'll prepare a couple of items for him to take on Sunday (it's a 2-day state-wide gathering of shape-note singers in Brookville, OH, northwest of Dayton).

I should get off the computer and actually watch the Olympics then I might have an opinion on the new scoring.  I think it is a shame a new scoring system was needed to combat dishonest judges.

Wow!  I would have loved that.  We went as a family shortly after Brian Boitano won the Olympics, and he was the highlight of the show for me.

I like her voice except for those dreadful nasal sounds!

I actually thinks she "records" more nasal than she really is.  She does get a bit too "forward" when I've heard her live, but I've also heard her sing more "rounded".  However, I think her nasal/forward quality is a hallmark of her voice, and just the "fault" of her physiognomy.  -And, on a practical and acoustical note, it's her forward, pingy placement that allows her voice to be heard over an orchestra even though it not really a "big" voice.

Watched M. HULOT'S HOLIDAY first off tonight. No, I don't think it's consistently hilarious. I think it gets off to a slow start, but honestly there are three or four set pieces in this that are screamingly funny to me. The Criterion DVD looks very good apart from a few minor scratches.

And obviously Rowlin Atkinson's BEAN studied Tati's movies very carefully.

I agree with you (physiognomy...) while I still believe that if her voice had been trained properly it would not remain at "nose level" but placed in the forehead, in the "masque" as we say in French, (i think it's what you say when using the term "rounded"!) and that is only achieved with the proper technic. Now, her voice is that unique that she can give it very different "colours" if needed!

Aren't we technical?! ;)

Finished the evening with the skating recap show in HD on cable. It was great seeing Evan Lysechek's program again, the skate of the night for me. I wish they had shown Matt Savoie's program. Would have enjoyed seeing it since I read nice things about it (didn't catch it on the program last night). I could have done without seeing Joubert's or Lambiel's programs again, but they didn't show the whole thing.

They also showed some of Emily Hughes' first practice skate at the games today. She landed everything they showed and seemed in very good spirits, very up and focused. I wish her the best.

Yes, I read the report on AOL about the snowboarding at the Olympics. I was frankly astonished.

Greatly enjoyed IN JUSTICE tonight.

I NEVER ever enjoy INJUSTICE and think it's something we should all fight against! ;)

Heading down for bed now. Since I got only around five hours of sleep last night, I'm very tired and hope sleep comes more easily tonight.

Good night, all!

Here is an interesting DVD that I found on Amazon.com today...has anyone seen this? It is a TV "spectacular" from 1955 starring Keith Andes as Strauss. It sounds very interesting.

And BK have you heard anything about the region 2 release of THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN?

I am trying to decide if I should buy it or wait and see if Universal ever decideds to release it in the U.S. during my lifetime.

An Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt reference DR François.
A "bluegrass" duo possibly best known in the pop world for "The Ballad Of Jed Clampett"

Mrs. Earl Scruggs died this week.  Hopefully, they put her in the ground ASAP.  Let's put an end to these lallygagging burials!

I think that my AOL service has finally gone over the edge.  Their headline news story on my AOL main screen is a story telling me that Coretta Scott King has died..... apparently again.

Oh brother!!!

DR Rodzinski I know exactly which race you are referring to. I didn't realize that that "person" involved was American.  But that snowboarding cross thingie is the weird sport i was trying to describe this morning.

It is the strangest thing. 4 skiiers just go down these moguls on snowboards AT THE SAME TIME.  The American was blowing the field away (well granted the 2 Canadians had crashed off the course).  But the US woman was going to win for sure. And then right right before the end she sort of hotdogged around and went off the course. It was truly shocking. And I'm sure it must be the most horrible feeling. I feel bad for her.

Earl Scruggs is a legend. He just recorded with the Chieftains a few years ago.

And re: the conclusion results for tonight's DANCING WITH THE STARS.

.
.
.

I just got home and tuned in to the last 10 minutes. And I must say I am livid.  Jerry Rice is clearly the worst dancer. He had to have gotten the most fan votes. Lisa (rinna) and stacey (wrestler) were the bottom two, and lisa went home. Now lisa was my fav, but that is not the only reason i am totally annoyed. I don't think the fans votes should carry more weight than the judges votes. Especially when the fans are clearly not voting for the best dancers.

It's infuriating. I know Jerry Rice is the most well known of the stars.  And I realize he tries. But he has not made that much progress and seems stuck at the same level.  I feel so bad for lisa. :(

My brother called me yesterday and sang "Cheney's got a gun".. (As in Aerosmith's JANIE'S GOT A GUN)  I can't get the stupid thing out of my head now....I hate it when that happens

I hear you... For the longest time I had a stupid little ditty stuck in my head. The melody is the largo movement from Bizet's Carment and the words, well we wont go there....

I had it on in the background.. I thought all the stars had guts to get out there and do it. Fans will vote for their favorites.

Quite a shocking turn of events this evening on DANCING WITH THE STARS.  It just goes to show that no one is safe unless everyone votes for their choices.

I do like DANCING, and although I realize that it is not great televsion, and that many at this site have already expressed their displeasure regarding the show; to me, this show is a throwback to a kinder and gentler time.  This is as close to a variety show as you can find on television these days.  Where else would you see a Michael Bublé or a Bill Medley (performing with his own daughter) backed by a full orchestra; and receiving a standing ovation besides.

Evening folks. Here's an odd LP with a pleasant cover. It's by the 101 Strings Orchestra on the A/S label out of Burbank, Cal. But what it really is is a compilation of various 101 Strings stuff with a woman moaning over the music in sheer ecstasy. There are also a couple smarmy poems like a guy reciting "This Guy's In Love With You" as if he's speaking to a woman on the phone:
"What's that? Why, yes! Yes I'm in love, baby. Who looks at you the way I do?"...

It is packaged nicely. If you open up the LP, there is a giant gatefold shot of the lovely cover lady.

Scruggs, a legend indeed. Basically invented a whole new style of banjo pickin'. Three-fingered style.

Tomovoz, on point as usual with the timely comedy!

Yes, my mother was not pleased either, but she doesn't like Lisa for some reason and never has, so she wasn't sorry to see her go, but she thought Jerry clearly was the worst dancer. I watched the dancing last night and agree he should have gone, but it's the nature of the beast. If you have call in votes it's going to be a popularity contest.  We like Stacy the best, but she's always close to being voted off, so I don't think she'll win

SNOWBOARDING SPOILERS

I watched the snowboarding tonight. I had heard about it earlier, but I turned away fast enough that all I could remember was she messed up somehow.  I feel bad for her, but she did it to herself and you really can't celebrate before you win

Well, the furniture men will be here bright and early. It will  be interesting watching them move the enormous furniture out with the snow and the cold and all. When they moved it in, it was 40 degrees and no snow at all.  Should be interesting.

All I can say is - Thank God for the crepe maker... making crepes on an electric stove top is murder.  The crepes are made for the cake, tomorrow the assembly begins.  All this and a few chords learning on the ukelele, we'll see if I remember them tomorrow.

I will agree with that...

A few years back I was visiting some friends and Boston and Jean-Pierre had people, even teh guests, flip a crepe. I flopped the first time and Dylan (the dog) had a tasty treat. The second one I did perfectly.

I also developed a fondness for marzipan and brie when I was in Boston.

Back from the show.  Small but wonderful audience, and the show was about the best it's been - Tammy and Matt were great, the other actor was fine, and it just sailed along.  The man who actually own the El Portal was there, and he loved the play - and Tammy.  I mean, he LOVED Tammy.

I didn't know until now that Lenny Dee passed away Monday. One of the pop great organists of all time, and my second favorite after Ken Griffin, Dee wrote the tune "Plantation Boogie," and has a ton of LPs out there stretching right up to the disco area. I shall have to post some of his wacky album covers next week.

Rock on, Lenny!
