Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of the official holiday of Studio City, and now it is time for you to post until the moron cows come home.

LE MIZ was enjoyable.  I’ll be damned if I could figure what might have been cut or edited from the regular show.  It all seemed to be present and accounted for.

Some of the performances were better than others.  Javert was fantastic!  Too bad he wasn’t Jean Valjean.

Some of the casting choices seemed a bit strange, but most of these kids have been involved with this theater training program, so perhaps they try to balance out who has leads vs. who plays ensemble.

A long long time ago, they (whoever "they" are) used to sarcastically  refer to musicals based on "Les Miz" with young people as "Junior Miz" - but at some point, "Junior Miz" became a term of affection rather than making fun.

I have some weekend work in the apartment.  The building is a mess with no super, my neighbor Judy claims there are rats in the building, and I've got a roach problem that's getting worse; I can only blame it on the lack of a building exterminator at the present time and the fact that the pet-safe pesticide I'm using is doing nothing.

I wonder if they've been using pesticide that's also insect-safe.

As to the rats, I believe it's because the "temporary super" who's never here and who sends young immigrants to the building to clean up things on what appears to be his whim, is leaving the outside basement door unlocked and open at all hours of the day.  The landlord is letting this building go to hell.

Our last really good super was Val, and he left because the cheap shits wouldn't even pay him vacation pay.

Joshie and I are beginning an Encores! project on Tuesday, but it will be a long process that will not generate enough weekly money to pay my bills.  On Monday I have to take Annabelle to the vet, and I hope I can get through it on less than $180, since that's all I have to my name until Social Security lands on Wednesday.

Ten years ago, I never thought I would end up in such a miserable level of poverty.  I was convinced I would work till I die.  Now I think it's the lack of work that will kill me.

One thing that really bugged me about Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood was that they were shooting "Lancer" and other shows on a Sunday....

Did television shows shoot regularly on Sunday?  MR BK would know.

And a very happy MORON DAY to all!

It's a weekly celebration here, too, DR Jrand68. And damn it, you're right, it's hard to pin down in advance which day of the week it's going to be.

But I have to say that BK's description of the crowds and traffic yesterday exceed just about anything I ever experienced in all my years in LA.
Absolutely horrendous.

What a shitty situation for the residents of your building. And of course for good workers like Val who only want to be fairly compensated.
NEWS FLASH:  Y'all's landlord sucks!  :)

Is this something for which a call to 3-1-1 can help get the ball rolling? Is it required (maybe not?) that there be a super or someone else on call to maintain apartment buildings and deal with situations as they arise?

Wow. KISMET. The movie.

Just another one of those believe it or not things, but I haven't watched it either beyond sampling it back when I got the DVD and then the Blu-ray. What have I been waiting for? I always figured it couldn't possibly be a faithful adaptation of the stage show, but given the comments here, it sounds like the greatest grotesque entertainment possible, and I can use something like that right about now. I'm going downstairs right now to take it off the shelf.

I wrote up a li'l review of the Audible version of GEE and sent it through about half an hour ago.

And guess what? It went through and was published on the page in about one minute.

So, WTF? Go figure. Trying to predict how these submissions are going to go is like trying to pin down when the next Moron Day is being held. Anyway, let's see if this link works:

Diana Canova is wonderful!

I've been up for a full rewatch of NUDIE anyway, and this pushes me over the edge. But I also want to see some more of what she's done. I never watched SOAP, which is probably my loss, but I'll seek that out and probably find some other goodies here and there.

One of the bits about her says she has lived, or lives now, in Connecticut and has done work for the theater program at Joel Barlow High School which is just one town away from me. Okay, two towns. Twenty minutes by motor vehicle, for which we have a department. I haven't done anything there, but a fellow keyboardist asked me to cover for him in some show there last year, but I had a conflict. Anyway, I wonder if she's still involved in that.

I've never heard of anything like this here in LA, though it probably exists, but I've heard of it many times in NY. My favorite story was the guy who rents what was basically a crawl space in a legitmate theater. No bathroom--he had to use the one that others, who were also renting "non-traditional" spaces in the building, used. No kitchen. No windows. Ugh.

When the housing authority evicts you where do you go? It's not like it's easy to find housing.
Title: Re: MORON DAY

The Powers That Be here are allowing a developer to put 8 units onto a lot that had a moderately-sized single-family home. It's down the street from me. It's five stories, taller than anything nearby. The Powers That Be think this is the answer to our housing problems, but I disagree. The developers only want to build "luxury" homes, because it's more profitable. Many of us don't care about the so-called luxury features, nor do we want to pay those prices. The answer to affordable housing isn't creating more luxury housing.

We stopped at the market after our walk around Fort Vancouver & to the growers market.  Keith picked up a salad at the deli counter.  At home he read the ingredients and was shocked to find out it isn't vegetarian.  Apparently the salad contains pasteurized cow.

I found acceptable macadamia nuts.  They don't carry the ones I like and until today I only saw pieces of macadamia nuts in bags. Today I found whole ones.  I used to buy the Mauna Loa ones in a jar.  I just went to their site & I think the jars are no longer.

I used to occasionally treat myself to the nuts as they are on the fattening side.  Right now that is a good thing :)

Nice.  "Days of Hope (http://www.howardgoodall.co.uk/works/musicals/days-of-hope) is set in Spain in 1939, in the dying moments of the Spanish Civil War."  It's not your traditional musical, but I really love the score.

Quote
Howard was inspired to write Days of Hope by the political events occurring in Eastern Europe in the late 1980s, and was interested that the ideas of freedom and democracy would be seen differently through the eyes of a country which was just discovering their meaning. Relating this to his choice of the Spanish Civil War as a setting for his musical, he said, “I felt that that the best way to look at freedom and democracy was to look at it when it was collapsing and failing. A year ago [in 1990] everybody was writing plays about the eruption of freedom and I wanted to go back and ask questions. Why did democracy fail in Spain in 1939? What did we do to invite fascism on ourselves all over Europe?”

I'm not going to boycott a big company like that just because of political donations to trump's campaign, even as much as I dislike trump.  Several other companies, however, have contributed specifically to anti-gay legislation, and those I do boycott.  Of course, the couple that I specifically know about are places that I wouldn't go anyway, so it's easy to boycott those...and I certainly don't know about all of the companies that have contributed to anti-gay legislation, so I can't boycott what I don't know.

I was surprised to learn that William Goldman didn't like the ending of the movie, which had been changed by Robert Towne. In the original script, as in the book, Hoffman's character kills Szell. Hoffman said he didn't buy that. I find the notion of forcing a former concentration camp dentist to eat jewels to be a fine example of karma. I like it.
