Well, you've read the notes, the notes were the cranberries, and now it is time for you to post until the post-Thanksgiving cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: HOLOPHRASTIC!
-
I remember that I watched "Twin Peaks" for a while, when it was originally on, but I don't remember why I didn't watch the entire series.
-
I loved Twin Peaks in its original airing, and own the Gold Box, though haven't partaken yet. bk, when you posted that creamed corn recipe yesterday it immediately made me think of Twin Peaks! Although the corn doesn't come into play until later in Season 2, I think. Unfortunately, the show lost its way a bit in Season 2, though I still thought it was wildly entertaining.
-
It's only a little bit past five am on the east coast, and I'm up. I didn't say that I'm fully awake, but, a shower and a cup of joe will put me in that state.
It's BLACK FRIDAY! Time to work.
-
Ugh! Black Friday! Count me out.

In today's NY Times, A.O. Scott makes this observation in his film review:
There are not too many screen performances that manage to be both subtle and monumental. Watching Mr. Langella’s slow, gracious movement through “Starting Out in the Evening,” I was reminded of Burt Lancaster in Luchino Visconti’s adaptation of “The Leopard.” In some ways the comparison is absurd — Visconti’s film is a sweeping historical symphony, while Mr. Wagner’s is a stately string quartet — but both movies concern an old man who has outlasted the social order in which his life made sense. And what is so remarkable about Mr. Langella is that he seems to hold Leonard’s intellectual cosmos inside him, to make it implicit in the man’s every gesture and pause.

Well.....I wouldn't be bothered if ALL of the Survivor footage was unseen, but that's just me!

Holofrastic!
Isn't that what Mary Poppins said about Sundays?

I liked Twin Peaks. I, too, thought the casting was wonderful. I loved seeing so many people I liked in one show.
-
Working today, but our regular hours: 10-7. I got all of the decorations out on Tuesday and put them in the work room, and I am taking my Christmas music CD's to play. So we are ready......I hope the customers are.

Friday morning greetings! We had quite a nice day yesterday, traveling with my mother to the home of Richard's younger brother in Cincinnati. In addition to the 3 of us and the 3 of them (their son Christopher is visiting on leave from the Air Force), my sister-in-law's sister, brother, and niece were there from out of town and the mother of Christopher's long-time friend Mike from the neighborhood.
After drinking a toast to Harriet, we consumed a fantastic meal of turkey, apricot stuffing, Honey Baked ham, mashed potatoes, roasted cauliflower and brussels sprouts, green bean casserole, and black cherry Jello. For dessert, I had taken pumpkin, pecan, and apple pie, and others had made pumpkin fluff and sweet potato/chocolate bars. The latter tasted much better than they sound.
We got home about 9pm and DS Rob called from Michigan, sounding maybe just a little homesick.
-
Thanksgiving Report from DR GINNY appreciated. Recorded in the minutes.
-
No shopping for me today, either. We're cooking our own turkey dinner for my mom and my reclusive aunt, who was invited yesterday, but chooses only to attend parties when they're at our house.
Media check - DVD - 2 Jonathan Pryce movies, Small Miracles and Behind the Lines. As for CDs, since it's still Thanksgiving in our home today, no Christmas music until tomorrow. I've been riding with DH Richard in his car the past several days and getting involved in his audiobook, Catharine Coulter's The Cove.
-
I want some pumpkin fluff.
-
Off to work.....where DR td has been for awhile already today.....

DearReaderLaura DR: A day late, but this "recipe" appeared yesterday in The New York Times. To be fair, not as an actual recipe, but mentioned [in passing] in an article about keeping a "thanks" journal:
Peel up a bag or two of yellow onions (not the pearl variety, just regular yellow ones, preferably on the smaller side). Boil them in a pot of water for 20 minutes or so. Drain. Throw in a block or two of cream cheese. Stir as the cream cheese melts. Serve.
.
-
Pumpkin Fluff is a Weight Watchers recipe: 16 oz. can of pumpkin, 1.5 oz box of sugar-free instant vanilla (yesterday's used butterscotch) pudding mix, 8 oz. fat-free Cool Whip, pumpkin pie spice to taste. This was provided for one of the guests who's diabetic, but everyone tasted it. I read a suggestion online to serve it as a dip for graham crackers.

Thanks, DR Ginny! :)

Good morning, all! The temperature did drop last night: I slept with the window wide open last night, but this morning I had to drop it to a fraction of what it was. I slept well, but I had peculiar dreams, the last one being one about my wallet being stolen and my frustrations with reporting it to the post office(???). Why I didn't grab a phone or go to the police station is beyond me.
My Mac man is showing up today to determine why my hard drive refuses to do any backup on this new Mac, and I have some Toyland work at home.
I always thought TWIN PEAKS was so much twaddle: less there than meets the eye. I detested it enough during its heyday to never want to see it again. I know others liked it but I felt it was all mouldy frosting and no cake.

Good Morning!

Once the children were asleep last night (ah, an almost Carousel reference), we - my brother and his wife, one of my brother's Coast Guard buddies and his wife, and myself - decided to watch a movie. My brother took a chance on "Miami Vice" - the movie version with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. What a bad, bad, bad, bad, movie. I don't think I've ever heard so many one-line clichés strung one after the other, scene after scene. It provided many a laugh for all of us. :)

So, DR JoseSPiano, you didn't go shopping this morning at the crack of dawn?
-
Good morning!
Very cool. crisp November morning here, just the way it's supposed to be for this time of year. I'll be going out later, but I expect the grocery store to be deserted like it was this time last year. Everyone's out at other types of stores shopping if they're out at all.
-
My computer just froze up for the first time since I've had it (August). I had to do a cold reboot which I despise doing. The only time I ever worry about "breaking" a computer is forcing it to power down and then powering back up right after.
-
In case anyone gets the idea about reruns tonight, there are NEW episodes of GHOST WHISPERER, MOONLIGHT, and WOMEN'S MURDER CLUB on tap for this evening. Other shows may be new as well, but these are the ones I watch so I checked them out ahead of time.

So, DR JoseSPiano, you didn't go shopping this morning at the crack of dawn?
No. If I do go out today, it will be later tonight. I sometimes just like walking into a store and/or mall and looking at the aftermath. ;)

the aftermath
Sort of like the afterglow, only different.

Nothing much to say, so I'll just say hi

I have afterglow....after I washed, I glowed.

Apparently, local Black Friday sites are ugly, ugly, ugly.
I hope my CostCo run doesn't turn into a fiasco.
-
It's time to get out, get some coffee and a morning bun, and proceed to the store where I "hope" to buy a PC that is on sale.
Offer good only while supplies last, dontchaknow!

I can see clearly now...that I've washed my eyeglasses.
Whew!

The store opens at 9 a.m.
I'm late getting started as it's 7:40 a.m.

Radio: WQXR
CD Player/iPod:
-"The Stockholm Concert, 1966 (Live)" - Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington - 8 tracks of pure musical genius and heaven!
-"Hairspray - 2-Disc Collector's Edition Soundtrack" - Alas, the first disc in the set is the original "Hairspray" (single-disc) sountrack - which I already have - but the second disc does have some fun extras. I'm glad I got it on sale and with a discount coupon too. ;) *I was hoping that this edition of the soundtrack would have included the "movie versions" of the song incorporating some of the sound effects - especially for the opening, "Good Morning, Baltimore", but it doesn't. And I'm still thrown off by the audio levels and mix of the bits of dialogue that are included.
-"Enchanted" soundtrack.

DR JoseSPiano, I was wondering - since you come from a family of caterers, does that up the stakes? Or does it tend to go the other way: a comfortable ease with all of the many preparations?

Orville didn't like flying with Wilbur. It wasn't the habit of that HARSH COPILOT to speak with HOLOPHRASTIC abruptness that was so bad, but more that the only response Wilbur ever gave to Orville's commands was a singular, surly #*$%.

Hi all! I hope all had a wonderful holiday.
Today I shall work on my Christmas cards. I don't have everyones address so I'm sorry if you don't receive a card.
I still can't drive so any Black Friday shopping is out of the question. Not that I would go out anyway. I was hoping to get a good deal on a HD TV but I also figure that the after Christamas sales should be good. By then, I should be able to drive and I should also be able to assemble the table I will have to buy for it to sit on.
I was never into TWIN PEAKS. I watched the first few shows before I switched from Direct TV. It didn't do anything for me and I don't miss it.

Another of my favorites gone....Reg Park passed away on November 22, 2007 after battling metastatic melanoma.
Reg was Mr. Britain 1949 and won two Mr. Universe contests...1951 and 1958. He went to Italy in the 1960s and starred in the HERCULES AND THE HAUNTED WORLD, MACISTE IN KING SOLOMON'S MINE, and HERCULES PRISONER OF EVIL, among other films. He later went to South Africa where he joined the business world. His son Jon Jon Park runs a gym in West Hollywood.

Like a surgical team, DH Richard and I just stuffed a 16-lb. turkey and put it in the oven. Our house should start smelling like Thanksgiving soon! Richard then threw me out of the kitchen so he could clean the floor.
-
I was wondering if anyone has heard of the book/diet called Eat Right for your Type by Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo with Catherine Whitney.
It's based on your blood type. I picked the book up at td's book store and have been reading it these past couple of days. It does seem to make sense that different blood types would react differently to food. Any thoughts/experiences with this?
I was talking to someone at work about it and was told they knew someone who lost 30 pounds using it. Since 30 pounds is what I need to lose, I thought I would give it a try.
-
Back for a second.
Re: TWIN PEAKS
I began watching it when it first premiered, and after about five or six episodes, I tired of its eccentricities (similar to my tiring of PUSHING DAISIES' quirky motif) and thought I had it figured out who murdered Laura Palmer and was pleased to learn I was correct at the end of that first season. Never bothered with the second season.
-

And you can send DH Richard right on over--I can't lift a bucket to wash my floors so I wouldn't mind if he did mine. ;)

Media check:
Books - just going though the cookbooks for ideas for last night's dinner.
CDs - Nope, haven't been listening.
DVDs - Going through the Doctor Who series one and two discs, for the Doctor Who Confidential bits, in anticipation of series three arriving hopefully today. I'm trying to think of any other programme that has had another programme running at the same time about how the main programme was made. (British spelling, since it's the BBC.) And I can't think of any other show that has done this. It's definitely better than the "making of" puff pieces found on so many DVDs that our esteemed one so rightly despises.

I watched Twin Peaks!
Btw, re: shopping today.
I think it was a tradition here (like Boxing Day shopping is) i would probably go. But i can't imagine going at 4am.
The thing is that is not something we are used to here at all. I mean there are some 24 hour depanneurs. But there are no Walmarts or anything like that even open past 9pm. We have strict opening hours. And stores even close here on saturdays at 5pm.
Even on Boxing Day the stores only open at 1pm in the afternoon (which i find extremely odd since it's the most popular shopping day of the year).

DR JoseSPiano, I was wondering - since you come from a family of caterers, does that up the stakes? I mean, does that provide extra pressure for each and every offering on the Thanksgiving table to be extra fabulous? Or does it tend to go the other way: a comfortable ease with all of the many preparations?
Well, since both my parents basically worked more in "institutional food service", the stakes were never that high to begin with. ;) My mom worked as a consulting dietitian for years for both hospitals and nursing homes, as well as a few years working for Sysco. My dad was a "culinary engineer" in the Coast Guard, and his last billet was at the mess cook for the Secretary of Transportation - at that time is was Libby Dole. After he retired from the USCG, he stayed on a civilian at the Secretary's mess, and then moved over to the HHS (first under Donna Shalala). When it came to time to cook meals at home, it was more a matter of making sure that they had cooked enough food to feed four hungry and growing boys. My mom would also audition certain new food-service products on us from time to time - we had the McRib long before it was called the McRib. -Oh, and a plethora of TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein) products... blech! But we did love the monthly visits from the Tasty-Kake rep - he would bring a literal car-trunk-load full of goodies directly from the factory for us.
My Dad did take some classes at the CIA (Culinary Institute of America), but those were mainly to increase his knowledge of the basics - and to extend his repertory beyond the typical mess-hall fare. -As well as to get used to cooking in something larger than a ship's mess.
Once my parents "learned" that we were able to cook for ourselves, they would usually just stock the freezer with a lot of frozen meals. Sometimes the frozen dinners came in handy, but after watching hours(!) of cooking shows on PBS each Saturday morning, I started cooking some things that were not in my parents' repertory - which consisted mainly of Filipino food, and some very "meat and potatoes" preparations. In any case... Where was I? Ah, yes... (ah, a "Liaisons" reference...)
Thanksgiving - and Christmas meals - were never fancy at the Simbulan household. As long as the Turkey wasn't dry, and there was a fresh cooker filled with rice, that was a good Thanksgiving meal. And it still is. -Although, there was the one year when my mom "discovered" cilantro, and she managed to find a reason to incorporate it into everything, including a relish made with pickle relish and cilantro... :-\ Thankfully, she grew out of that phase. ;)
-
Last night's dinner was mostly a success, by the way. The duck breasts came out of the pan with crispy skin and tender meat. The Brussels sprouts with bacon were delightful. And the chestnut puree was delish and rich.
Sadly, the two things I usually don't have a problem with floundered, probably because I was concentrating on the other dishes. The mashed taters were gummy, and the gravy was flat. *Le sigh.*
-
My tummy is still too full from yesterday.
DR Danise, you and Cillaliz and I should support each other during our weight loss efforts.
So what are you trying? South Beach, Blood type, etc?

I know others liked it but I felt it was all mouldy frosting and no cake.
Ah, Larry. I do love your descriptions of things you dislike. No "Blech! I hated it!" for you! You are so graphic--even elegant--in your distaste! I always chuckle.

Oh, and HELLO, EVERYONE!

-However, the couple of times where I ended up cooking The Meal, trust me, it was Fa-Bu-Lous <snap!>!!
;D

I will avoid Black Friday like the plague.
I enjoyed TWIN PEAKS when it ran very much; but...I HATED that they never provided me a proper ending to the show. I felt like I had watched the longest Shaggy Dog story in history.
I'm dipping into my Noel Coward, Judi Dench, and Ibsen boxed sets this weekend. Last night we watched a wonderful Feydeau farce starring Dench called Keep An Eye on Amelia. Then followed it with a bleak black and white BBC production of Ibsen's BRAND from 1959, starring an excellent Patrick McGoohan. I'm surprised he didn't become a noted figure on the British stage. His performance in this was very electrifying and powerful.
We've also been getting a few screeners from the movie companies to watch for Awards Time...one of which is 3:10 To Yuma which I have been avoiding because I love the original so much.
-
Oh... As for Brussel Sprouts, I've become fond of parboiling them, them slicing them so that the leaves come off/separate. Then sauteing them in some browned butter.
-
One of the interesting things I read (for example) was that Brussels Sprouts inhibits thyroid hormone for type o's (which is what I am). I happen to LOVE brussels sprouts.
-
Yesterday we also watched most of the re-run of LEGALLY BLONDE...while very slick and polished and intermittently amusing. The plot was predictably formuliac (I could call every twist long before it happened) and the music is distinguishedly unmemorable, prosiac, and every song sounds like the one I just heard.
-
I'll bet no one ever accused Reg Park of being a flibbertigibbet.
-

Yes, Danise. I know many Canadians who are familiar with the book. For some reason it has been quite popular there--perhaps here, too, and I just haven't gotten US feedback. Personally, I prefer a more individualized approach; IMO the approach overgeneralizes. But, you may find it helpful. Just remember that everyone's body chemistry is a bit different.
-
So what are you trying? South Beach, Blood type, etc?
I am trying the smaller meal diet. It is very easy. You eat smaller meals.

May I join, too? After tonight's dinner ;) ?

As for Black Friday, oh, no, not me! One year I was on my way to our local Whole Foods Market to do some grocery shopping and had to pass by a shopping mall. Traffic was a mess, even for those of us bypassing the mall.
-
DS Betsy was on the SAG/AFTRA Board here for years and got to know the one-armed man from Twin Peaks rather well (he's from PDX). I think somewhere, somehow we knew the Log Lady, too, but neither of us can recall right now.
BTW, I will probably be back later with an I Blame MattH story (as much as I'd like to blame Jose).
-
May I join, too? After tonight's dinner ;) ?
All are welcome! :)
Guess what, I just went to the mail box and guess what was there? The cookbook and the Blood Type O Food, Beverage and Supplement lists books I just told you about.
I also got a nice package from DR Jane. Thank you so very much!
-
DR JMK,
Does DS Betsy still have any pull with either SAG or AFTRA...maybe she could secret me a couple of contact addresses for some former members who I have not been able to locate, but who I need to interview!
-
Richard Beymer and Russ Tamblyn? Weren't they also in WEST SIDE STORY 3D - THE TV SERIES?
-
Good morning. Or good afternoon. Oh, what a lazy day the day after Thanksgiving is, at least around here.
We had a great family meal last night.
Turkey
stuffing
sweet potatoes
white baked potatoes
brocolli
cauliflower
cranberry and fruit confit
lasagna (a family tradition to have lasagna at Thanksgiving)
apple pie and vanilla ice cream
coffee
champagne and wine
Yum.
Then, this morning, my cousins whom I haven't seen in a long time came over to say hello and visit for a while.
Now, people are off to the beach.
And a lazy afternoon nap sounds really good! I think just looking on TV at all the black Friday shoppers lined up at 3am made me tired! ;D

I've done the Black Friday shopping thing, but back before it got this wild.

I was a-m-a-z-e-d!
CostCo was calm. Very few cars. And they had opened EARLY today (unbeknownst to me). I have no idea if it was crowded earlier, but I sailed in and got around to see other things I had not seen before.
I got my computer with a $100 off coupon!
I got a 4GB flash drive with a $20 off coupon.
I resisted many urges. I bought sensibly.
And then I went to the post office and mailed out many seemly and unseemly things.
I'm home. HOME! And this is my chair. And this is the keyboard on which I type my many missives.
Oh, Toto, we're HOME! And there's Auntie Em and Uncle Henry.
And...oh, my! YOu were there, too...and you....and YOU!

DR Charles Pogue, there'as a wonderful Noel Coward version of Feydeau's Occupe-toi d'Amelie LOOK AFTER LULU, which I believe played London's West End with Vivien Leigh. The American production with Tammy Grimes as Lulu/Amelia was a bomb.

Time for some lunch soon, I think. I've not had brekkies....not even a cup of coffee.

DR Julie, how positively lovely to see you. Hope you are getting some much-deserved R&R after the past few months of madness.
-
Off to have my foot checked by a new doctor!
-
DR Ron Pulliam, congratulations on your sage and restrained and discounted purchases.
Do you get to play with the new PC now, or do you have to wait until after the holidays?
-
Well.. My parents just left CarMax, and are now heading over to the PX to check out some sales. And then they'll come back over here to pick me for the trip down to Richmond. So... In the meantime, I think I'm going to take a nap. :)
Laters...
-
Off to have my foot checked by a new doctor!
I think that's better than having a new foot checked by your doctor.
-
Off to have my foot checked by a new doctor!
I told the foot doctor I was in love with you.
And then the foot doctor he told me what to do.
-
I was wondering if anyone has heard of the book/diet called Eat Right for your Type by Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo with Catherine Whitney.
It's one of the many diet books I've bought that I hoped would work just because I bought the book!
I have met several people who had success with it, tho. They probably did more than just buy the book... :)
-
DR JoseSPiano, hope you'll capture & post some shots of your cute niece and nephew types!
-
My tummy is still too full from yesterday.
DR Danise, you and Cillaliz and I should support each other during our weight loss efforts.
Me too! Of course...I have to do something which constitutes an "effort"...
-
DR Ron Pulliam - You may not have had your brekkies yet, but is it possible that you've had a Bloody Mary or two already? Or as one of my old roommates used to call them: "cockies" (as in cocktails).
-
Nah. He's just like that naturally. ;)
-
I have to do something which constitutes an "effort"...
Does the "THINK" system count?
-
Oh, DR JoseSPiano, thanks for your thoughtful and detailed reply to my question earlier.
-
Does the "THINK" system count?
LOL..if only...
-
DR JoseSPiano, hope you'll capture & post some shots of your cute niece and nephew types!
I got a couple of pics here and there. However, Emily has a cold right now, so she was not feeling so photogenic this time. John Michael and Alyssa were also surprisingly camera-shy too. But I did manage to get a few pics.
-
Oh, DR JoseSPiano, thanks for your thoughtful and detailed reply to my question earlier.
You're welcome.
-
Oohh... Once I get back to Richmond in a couple of hours, I will be having supper with Steve. And since he has a Gift Card, we'll be dining at Morton's Steakhouse tonight. :)
-
Young lady, does it ever occur to you to ask other people for help? I don't mean that you can't assemble a table by yourself, but it is often more fun to have a friend to laugh over the instructions with, and misplace pieces together.
You could invite your friend / co-worker that has been so helpful driving you around to come over some night after Christmas for dinner and an assembly party. It might make the assmbly easier and a lot more fun!
-
Congrats to DR Ron on his successful Black Friday foray!
I don't have a new computer, but I AM trying out a new ISP. Many of you have heard me complain about mine a lot lately. So, we shall see...
-
I agree with DR JULIE that the Friday after Thanksgiving is a lazy day.
-
One thing that is disappointing to me is the current trend to use these ready to eat things that seem to show up on tables nowadays...stuffing, mashed potatoes, apples, that you just heat up in the microwave. I know it's easy, and granted that I didn't have to cook for a bunch of people, but I hope when we do have T-day here next year I will be able to make some of these lovely recipies (including bk's creamed corn!) instead of these things.
-
For Shuler Hensley (http://www.nypost.com/seven/11222007/realestate/creature_comfort_716987.htm) fans.
That's incredible!
-
MBarnum, your in box is full...

M Barnum, I am so sorry to read of the passing of Mr. Park. Did you ever have a chance to interview him?
-
Did you ever have a chance to interview him?
Interview, or Oggle? ;)
-
Pumpkin Fluff is a Weight Watchers recipe: 16 oz. can of pumpkin, 1.5 oz box of sugar-free instant vanilla (yesterday's used butterscotch) pudding mix, 8 oz. fat-free Cool Whip, pumpkin pie spice to taste. This was provided for one of the guests who's diabetic, but everyone tasted it. I read a suggestion online to serve it as a dip for graham crackers.
This sounds really good! We have an annual holiday potluck at work...I might consider making it for that. :)
-
Does the "THINK" system count?
I did a play with a director who blocked the entire, well almost entire play (the first two acts) using the Think System. Actually I ended up having to block the third act using the Directing System.

Was it a farce?
Style of play, not the results. Just making that clear. ::)
-
Interview, or Oggle? ;)
Oggle? The man was 80! Well, we are talking about Mr. Barnum here.
-
I would think that specific staging for a farce would almost necessarily be more urgent than would be required for a drama, to make it work properly.
-
we are talking about Mr. Barnum here.
Yes, indeed! 8)
-

No, it was one of those quirky little murder / no murder mysteries that dinner theaters and community theaters jumped at following the success of DEATHTRAP. I don't think anyone could have made the show work, although we tried.
-
We had a dish with our Thanksgiving dinner last night that I had never tried before, but really enjoyed. It was brought to the dinner by a woman from East Texas. It was a dish made with corn, and I believe she said, cheese and jalapenos.
Yummy!
-
One of the interesting things I read (for example) was that Brussels Sprouts inhibits thyroid hormone for type o's (which is what I am). I happen to LOVE brussels sprouts.
Is this a good thing or a bad thing (about the inhibiting of the thyroid hormone)?

As for DVDs, I had to look on Netflix to see what should be coming today or tomorrow....
I was a little bit worried that they had mixed up my list with elmore's VCR list. The film I am supposed to be receiving is entitled GUYS AND BALLS.....
Fortunately, it is a film about a guy that was kicked off of a soccer team for being gay, and fights back by organizing his own soccer team (with hilarious results?). Whew!

Working 12 hr shifts at the hosp, yesterday and today, and there are pot-lucks everywhere, so the diet went out the window. Thank goodness I can start over on Monday. Stereo, a second hand copy of Offenbach's ROBINSON CRUSOE, with English lyrics..DVD, tonight, will be STOLEN KISSES, which I never got around to seeing(Failed to watch it last night 'cause I fell asleep watching LEGALLY BLONDE on MTV.Car CD MERRY FROM LENA-She's so good on Silent Night, Drummer Boy and the like, I wish there had been more of these songs and fewer on the snowflakeRudolphbells type thing.I'm so spoiled by "Turkey Lurkey Time", esp now that I can watch it on YouTube, that it's either Turkey Lurkey or Bach's Christmas oratoriio; It's gotta be sacred or it's gotta be Turkey Lurkey!.
-
BTW, I will probably be back later with an I Blame MattH story (as much as I'd like to blame Jose).
I will certainly be waiting to hear this! ;D
-
The Grant Geissman pic showed up for me, too.
-
The grocery store was virtually empty today just like it was last year. I was SO happy. Got a parking space near the door and zipped in and out quickly. Too bad it's not like this the rest of the year.
-
I began my afternoon viewing with last night's LAW & ORDER: CI. It seemed familiar, but maybe it was a new episode. I really wasn't sure. Anyway, Michael Biehn and the actress who played on THE NANNY (can't think of her name) were the guest stars, and it was an interesting case interrupted by the constant phone calls to Bobby from his near-senile mother played by Rita Moreno. Bobby was near the breaking point and looked like he was about to be fired. This is what made the show so familiar. I thought it might have been an episode from last season.
-
LAW & ORDER; SVU had a good case that featured the "other" detective team. Mariska Hargitay was only in one scene, and Christopher Meloni wasn't in more than maybe three, though he did have more to do than Hargitay.
-
I then began watching RETURN TO NEVER LAND, but I didn't quite get to the end. I'll finish it when I go down. Certainly not as good as the original PETER PAN. Different voices (not as good as the originals), a very mediocre score, but some excellent sound design and OK animation.
-
Off to work.....where DR td has been for awhile already today.....

I have a few of his movies on dvd.

I was a TWIN PEAKS maven.
I loved everything about TWIN PEAKS for a while.
Then I started phasing out of TWIN PEAKS.
Suddenly David Duchovny appeared as Dennis/Denise, and I was hooked again.
I even have a fondness for TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME.
I'm looking to have the Gold Box by Christmas.
-
And let's hope that the deleted scenes from Fire Walk With Me eventually see the light of day...
-
elmore, thanks for the tip about Coward's Look After Lulu. I know I have the play around here somewhere and I believe you're right about Vivian Leigh being in it. I did not know it was a version of Feydeau's Amelie. The production I watched last night was done probably back in the Seventies, Dame Judi was still fairly young, it zipped along at a brisk 58 minutes. I don't know if it had been cut for TV; but its pace was dazzling!
I believe a volume of Noel Coward's Letters was just published. I suspect the equal the theatrical treasure trove Gielgud's Letters proved to be and are just as dishy!
-
What a wacky morning. I got up early and trudged over to The Grove, where I was expecting to find hordes of shoppers and no parking. There were no shoppers and no parking, save for people in the Apple Store. This was about eight-thirty this morning. What became clear is that no stores in the Grove were having sales. What a joke. The Apple Store had a few things on sale for fifty or a hundred bucks less, but nothing you'd need especially. The Farmer's Market had more people than The Grove, and you couldn't get anywhere near Du-Par's, astonishing when you think of all the pigging out that occurred last night.
-
I'm home now and relaxing until about quarter to five, when I'll leave for my post-Thanksgiving Thanksgiving Dinner.
-
Will we never get to page eight?
-
Did the Black Friday hordes run rough shod over ya?
OY! I barely could find a parking spot this morning!
According to early reports, the sales in my store (I worked the Calender Store today) were nearly double those of last year's in the same store.
As a manager queried me on my way out the door, "Were you selling YOURSELF with every calender purchased today?" ;)
I replied, "yes."
Of course.
-
That is, unless you like to be run rough shod over...
It depends on WHO'S running rough and shod, doesn't it? ;)

Will we never get to page eight?
We're trying. . .

At 58 minutes, it was cut, probably by about a third. It's originally a 3-act farce, and I have a translation under the title KEEP AN EYE ON AMELIA in an Eric Bentley collection of farces. I like the Coward version a lot.
-
I'm quite tired. I ended up watching one more episode of Twin Peaks, which kept me up until one-thirty.

Can't wait to see tonight's GHOST WHISPERER and MOONLIGHT!

I'm hearing such lovely things about our What If costume designer, Amy Adams, in Enchanted.
-
So, I was at the church feeding the fish in the fountain when a young man rode up on a bicycle. He had a box and large bag of food. It turned out to be the owner of the lost dog who found his way to our church. He wished to thank us by donating food for our deacons' cupboard. Goofy is doing fine -- still limping, but the vet said that nothing was broken. Most importantly, his tail has been wagging a lot.

I must be going. I need to clean up and clear a path so that tomorrow, the loveseat that's on my second floor TV/computer room can be taken out easily and given to the adult child of friends of my parents. I don't really want the loveseat, so that's okay. It's just that I haven't kept a clear path. ::) So now, the path must be cleared. And I have rehearsal tonight, and I need to work for a while tomorrow before I usher for a tour of Late Nite Catechism. Then on Sunday, we have an early rehearsal. Talk about some busy days off. ;)
-
It depends on WHO'S running rough and shod, doesn't it? ;)
I'll take cleats over spike heels any day.
-
DR td IS Mr. December! :D
-
Had a visit at the medical center/clinic a few blocks from us. It looks very clean and well-run, and I was very impressed with the staff there. The registration process took a little while given it was my first time there, but after that, the wait wasn't long. It'll be nice to have a medical facility to go to so close to home, especially when I remember how impossible it was for me to get around during the worst two weeks of my foot problems. And it seems the place is covered by my insurance plan with only a tiny co-payment per visit.
-
So what are you trying? South Beach, Blood type, etc?
I'm planning to do weight watchers this time and rejoining Curves. Last time I went to curves (several years ago) I really lost a lot of inches - I was doing Atkins then. I saw the starter books for Weight watchers on eBay, so I'm considering getting them and then deciding if I want to just do it myself or if I want to pay the fees and go to the meetings.
-
DR td IS Mr. December! :D
Only in the windmills of YOUR mind. ;)
-
Congratulations on finding a good fit, DR FJL. What did they say about your foot?
-
Only in the windmills of YOUR mind.
Who knows whither my windmills wander?
-
I'll take X-rays next week, I think, depending on my schedule.
But she needs blood work results before changing the course of gout medication I've been on. I'll go for the blood tests on Monday.
-
I'm feeling a bit bushed. Der Brucer decided that today was the day we would re-arrange the bookshelves in my room, adding three bookshelves and taking out the desk and a small file cabinet. It's going to look good, and work well, when I get everything sorted again, but until then everything is piled up on my bed.
But this will give me more room to work with, along with the bookcase we put in the hall. Along with all the food books, we'll be moving all the DVDs that are television-related to the new shelves, which will clear up some room for the backlog in the livingroom.
-
Then we went to the store, mainly for dinner tonight (salmon).
But, while there, we spotted the turkeys that were on sale. 14 pound birds, regularly marked at 59 cents per pound, marked down to 45 cents per for bonus card holders, and then an additional two bucks off! So we've now got three birds waiting for roasting (two in the freezer, one in the downstairs fridge).
Plus a great deal on beef eye of round, more than half off, which will be good for braising or cutting down into cubes for chili.
Now, if only I were getting the hours on the work schedule, because the winter cut-backs are upon us. Bleh.
-
Well, I spent some time reading the diet books I got. I hate to say it but I don't think I'm going to be able to do it. I have to have normal food that I can buy at the local market--not health food store food.
I may just put the whole set up for sale on E-bay. Bla!
-

Dear TCB, you know that I hate to bother anyone for anything that I can do myself. Having to lean on Thelma last week and this has almost killed me.
I couldn't wait to get home and out from under foot at her house. I don't ever want to be a burden on anyone at any time.
-
I think I'm just going to try Ginny's diet and cut my meals in half. Then I'll do the tread mill for at least 30 to 60 minutes a day--when I can build up to it.
-
OMG! I'm in love with the worlds smallest horse! What a cutie! I just saw her on tv.
I think Bear is taller then she is! I want one!

I shall soon be on my way to the Wechter's, after which I shall return with a full report.

Will we never get to page nine?

I must have missed the story on this one but I'm glad it worked out alright.

Aren't we all, after 7 years?

Combined Blame MattH/Impending Triumph of Blu-Ray Department: Well, DS Betsy did not, repeat did not, have a head explosion when I saw the Black Friday ad for a 37" Sylvania for less money than the clearance 32" Samsung I got a couple of weeks ago, so I took the Samsung back, got a bigger TV, and paid less. I finally bit the bullet and also bought a Toshiba Hi-Def DVD player which also up-converts standard DVDs. It came with 2 Hi-Def DVDs and a coupon for 5 more, and was on sale for $199, so I'm in high-tech heaven. The picture of both the tv and the DVD player are pretty amazing.
-
Danise -- I found a dog at the church one evening that had been lost for several days. Luckily he had tags and his owner was stunned and thrilled that he was alive. I've been wondering about him and how he was doing.
-
Not appreciated, JMK. You know full well I didn't mean anything political, and you had to be snide and make it that way. You've just shown a side of yourself that I really don't like.
-
Who knows whither my windmills wander?
Only The Shadow knows. . .
-
bk - will you be attending Forry's birthday bash next weekend?
-
Dinner tonight: poached salmon, a Lipton pasta side, and broccoli (using some of the bacon/onion/vinegar mixture left over from last night's Brussels sprouts).

Not appreciated, JMK. You know full well I didn't mean anything political, and you had to be snide and make it that way. You've just shown a side of yourself that I really don't like.
It's what we like to call a joke. Your mileage may vary. I know I haven't been laughing much, politically or otherwise, recently.
-
MBarnum, check your email re: your question.
-
It's not a joke to me when my words are twisted around. You've taken a perfectly good word, "bushed," meaning tired, and politicized it. It's a form of name calling, and something I thought you were above. I'm sorry to find myself wrong.

Personally I think you're way over-reacting, Woody, but I apologize to you, anyway. It was merely a joke, and as such, may not appeal to your sense of humor. I've bashed Bush, Clinton and anyone else I think deserves it here with equal "snideness" (see my post above), so my cynicism should really not surprise anyone very much anymore.
-
Vis a vis different meanings of "bush" department: Whoopi Goldberg rather vehemently denies the massively reported statement she allegedly made during the last election series on the new 4 DVD Movies 101 set. For an interview collection, it's surprisingly entertaining.
-
Friday night.
-
Kerry, CONGRATULATIONS on becoming an uncle & getting a more comfortable boot. Do you have a nephew or a niece?
-
DR Laura was kind enough to bring Thanksgiving leftovers (my favorites) over today. I had just returned from meeting my new nephew.
The visit was a lovely time-- just my nephew, my baby sister and the father of the child. I did not have to encounter The Little Foxes at all (which I'll admit I dreaded).
Evrettt is indeeda beautiful baby(and I don't care what anyone says-- not all babies are cute). His features are already and beautifully formed; he is not just a shapeless blob, a smurf, conehead or looks like W. C. Fields. He has a has a perfect little nose and adorable ears and the cutest mouth. He also smells that sweet new baby smell (which is almost as good--but not quite-as puppy breath).
I'm watching "Fitzwilly" tonight (from about '67 or so). It has a nice score by Johnny Williams, the untraditional sexy charm of Barbara Feldon, a wonderful supporting cast, scenes of a civilized and classy New York which does not exist anymore and the enchanting Edith Evans who steals the whole thing. Interestingly enough, the weakest part is Dick Van Dyke with all his attempts at various accents. When he's just being him, he's quite good though. I'm surprised no one ever redid the movie or is making a Broadway musical of it, but perhaps it is just too simple and sweet a movie for anyone to bother.

My tummy is still too full from yesterday.
DR Danise, you and Cillaliz and I should support each other during our weight loss efforts.
Simple----just shatter your ankle. You'll lose 20 pounds fast!

Vis a vis different meanings of "bush" department: Whoopi Goldberg rather vehemently denies the massively reported statement she allegedly made during the last election series on the new 4 DVD Movies 101 set. For an interview collection, it's surprisingly entertaining.
This is exactly the problem. The word "bush" obviously has multiple meanings. However, much as I love a good pun, and I do, to take someone's name and make it nasty smacks of the schoolyard. It's the sort of thing I expect from Ann Coulter. (And it doesn't matter if Whoopi actually said what was reported, or if she was used, it remains that someone had the schoolyard mentality to push it forward.)
Maybe it's being a political moderate, having to fight the radical left and radical right simultaneously, that is at the root of my reaction. Please remember, der Brucer and I were very active politically as members of Log Cabin Republicans (basic profile: fiscal conservatives, social moderates) up until we moved to Delaware four years ago. Der B still does consulting work for them. There was a large contingent of Republican moderates that were glad to have us in the room - our presence helped shame the radicals into keeping their mouths shut. I have been picketed in Dallas, Texas. I have been screamed at (several times) while helping man a booth for LCR at the Los Angeles Gay Pride Festival.
Am I a Bush fan? Absolutely not. He stands for far too many things that I do not. But your phrase "Don't we all" dismissively smacked of everyone having the same mindset. We clearly don't.

I agree, not all babies are cute. ;D He sounds like a joy. :)
20 pounds! i hope u needed to loose it, otherwise that is scary.
-
Off the subject, at least twice a day it seems I get a notice from Windows that updates are ready for my computer. This seems to be like calling places and their voice menu options have changed or the fact that you can't go anywhere without a yellow cone telling you the floor is wet. Are these things ever not so?

As long as Everett doesn't try to lick your nose, as any self-respecting puppy would.
Congrats!

It's an amazing place, after all.

Dinner is fairly good, but there's a real difference between farm-raised salmon and wild-caught.
And I've got a bed to get cleaned off, or neither Fletcher nor I will get to sleep tonight. He's been giving me dirty looks all day, depriving him of one of his favorite napping spots.
-
DR JMK, got the e-mail and thank you kindly for any info you can find out!

Well, actually, I've burned a lot of energy hefting my body around, and the other day the doctor told me that most of the calories are being burned up by my body using them to mend the bones, so this is all a good thing. Not easy, but good. Apparently the gods and Haines angels are still watching over me! :)

As bk would say (with thanks to the late Bob Hope), "I gotta tell you."
Sounds great. Congrats on these purchases. If I remember DR Ron Pulliam's story, however, those five free HD-DVDs will take 6-8 weeks to arrive. (And Amazon is having a buy two-get one free sale today).
-
Nice pics. Thanks for posting them.
-
I finished watching RETURN TO NEVER LAND, both the movie and all of the bonus features on the disc. Not a greatg movie and the bonus stuff was pure fluff. The games were the best thing about the disc.
-
Next, I put in SPELLBOUND, the Criterion edition of the movie. I haven't seen the movie in awhile. The first 30 minutes is not without interest but is a bit plodding, but once the central mystery is established, the picture picks up momentum. I'll enjoy finishing this tomorrow.
-
GHOST WHISPERER had just an OK episode tonight. I understood the little girl's fears, but I grew a bit tired of her whining and crying. Not one of my favorite episodes tonight.
-
MOONLIGHT had another very strong episode. Love Beth's jealousy, and I can't believe that Mick is buying the transition from vampire to human so naively.
Damn this strike! There aren't many originals of the show left before they run out, and I want an entire 22 episodes to see where all this is going!
-
To anyone who saw NUMB3RS tonight - which character was portrayed by Wil Wheaton?
-
WOMEN'S MURDER CLUB didn't have a great mystery, but it did have great chemistry with Angie Harmon and Rob Estes. That connection and sexual tension is really intriguing.
-
I spent the afternoon putting plastic on some of the windows, installing mini blinds in the bathroom, moving the old freezer etc....
-
So tonight I treated myself to ENCHANTED. I loved it.
-
Going to write for a bit and then head down to bed.
Good night!
-
SEMI-SPOILER FOR ENCHANTED!!!
FJL- I disagree that the premise was there is not happily ever after. It was only the cynical divorce lawyer and the evil queen who believed that. I think you're taking the fact they landed in New York and called it the place where there is no happily ever after a little too much to heart. :)
-
I loved the score of ENCHANTED and will be purchasing the soundtrack as soon as I can.
-
Hey, you Desperate Housewives fans--who's the character actress who played (at least when I watched the show--first season) Bree's mother-in-law, IIRC? We caught the tail end of an SVU last night and she was featured and once again I can't for the life of me remember who she is.
-
This afternoon I moved my 20 + year old freezer from the garage into the house and plugged it in. It didn't sound pretty, like it's on its last legs... I mentioned that to my mom and they are going to get me a new one for Christmas! I am very excited about that. I'll just get the little 5.0 or 5.3 cubic foot freezer, but it will allow me to do things like buying a turkey and having it cut in half so I can roast half now and half later. And to stock up on good food I can eat.
So, tomorrow I shall go shopping for little freezers. I'm hoping Lowes has a good deal. They will deliver free and take away the old one...at least that's what the website says, so I'm going to check it out.
-
DR Danise, have you looked into the weight watchers diet? The books explaining it all are on eBay. You count points so you can eat the food at the grocery store and don't have to buy special food.
-
DR Laura, great pics and thanks for the news about Goofy. Glad to know his owners were appreciative of your efforts and did something generous to show their appreciation

Thanks for the heads-up on the sale--just partook. I have to say I'm not that hyped to upgrade to HD-DVD on titles I already have, as the standard-def ones I played today look simply incredible with the upconverting. That said, I went ahead and "double-dipped" at Amazon with the 38 Robin Hood and 62 Mutiny on the Bounty, two of my all-time faves.

Bree's mother-in-law, Phyllis, is played (to perfection) by Shirley Knight.

Yes, of course! Thanks, TD. I tell you, I am suffering from half-Heimers, or maybe even ThreeQuarters-Heimers.

"ENCHANTED" SPOILER
Cilla - Sorry if I misspoke (or mistyped) yesterday. I think the movie IS saying there's a happily- ever-after that is possible, but the wrap-up of the movie's plot for both couples suggested to me that the happily-ever-after in our real world (at least for the main characters) is only possible with the intervention of people from the fairy tale world. Patrick Dempsey's character (a real human being) could only find true love with the lady from the fairy tale world, and Idina Menzel's character (a real human being) could only find true love with a character from the fairy tale world. In that aspect, the movie seemed (to me) to carry with its ending a hopelessness in terms of potential for romance among people in our real world, that a person living in the real world would never find his or her true love right here in their own world. In the movie's world, there is a happily-ever-after, but it requires that you find that true love with a character that can't possibly exist, and I felt this was compounded by the same thing happening to Idina Menzel's character.

And one for Marsden

So what about the Banks? They were both real and left their divorce for happily ever after with each other.
I just thought they couldn't leave Idina Menzel's character jilted and Prince Edward alone. It's Enchanted, it has to have a fairy tale ending for everyone.

Back from a splendidly splendid dinner at the Wechter's and wil now watch a Twin Peaks episode.
-
Well so far I've found the calculation on the web of how many points I need daily for weight watchers. I'm thinking that maybe the point thing is a little too much to deal with and there seems to be a price for absolutely everything. So, I think I'm going to do something more akin to Dr Laura's eat less diet and start working out more. I'll try that for awhile and if it doesn't work, then I'll look into WW more.

I've always been bad at math. :)

My dad is holding his own... It is difficult to watch him decline. It really is.
