I just had one of those patrons here in the library who said he'd been "away" for a while - uh HUH.

But, but haven't you been  "away" too?

I have had a very busy afternoon of viewing.

I began with episode 5 from GREY'S ANATOMY, Season 1. This is the first episode I had not previously seen from Season 1. It involved several crises at the hospital including finding a towel under a woman's lung from a surgery she had had six years earlier. Nice episode to begin my afternoon.

Next came last night's MY NAME IS EARL, a sweet, funny story of brother Randy falling for a woman with a prize-winning cat. Randy, of course, is allergic to cats but is so desperate for some female company that he endures his swollen throat and watering eyes as much as he can.

SMALLVILLE had a "monster of the week" scenario, this time with an alien plant threatening to take over Earth. More interesting is the budding romance between Lois and Oliver Queen (aka the Green Arrow).

THE OFFICE had a hilarious half hour with Mikael's old boss passing away and Michael assuming the role of grief counselor for his employees. One excruciatingly funny segment had each person telling a moment of grief in his life, only each person was recounting a movie plot that involved a character dying. Pan used MILLION DOLLAR BABY. Ryan used THE LION KING. Kevin finally gave it away with WEEKEND AT BERNIE'S, but it was a howl watching them tell these plots with stone faces and Michael trying to be so understanding of their "grief." Later, the episode evolved into a funeral for a bird done with utmost seriousness.

Really, a funny, funny show.

SUPERNATURAL involved vampires this week, but there was a twist to the story that made it more than just the usual hunt and kill. I think the show is delving into much more personal and darker territory thus far this season, and I worry that the teens that have been its most dependable audience might start to drift away with this move away from mere comic book heroics.

Finally, I put in THE LITTLE MERMAID and watched the first 20 minutes or so.

As bk said a few days ago, there is nothing wrong with this transfer. Some segments are soft the way they were meant to be, some segments feature desaturated color, and some are as sharp and colorful as they could be. I heard nothing wrong with audio for the two songs in the first part of the film.

Besides, the anamorphic enhancement which adds at least a third more vertical resolution to the picture from the previous DVD and laserdisc makes this a no-brain buy for fans of the film.

I am probably going to give that new game show a try tonight: 1 VS. 100. Since it's an entertainment trivia game, I think it might be very entertaining. Nothing else on that I'm interested in seeing at that time anyway.

Was that Amy Sedaris playing the cat lady?  I loved it when the cat was rescued from Joy.

Well, DR MattH has sure "matured" my tastes, and now I resist less than ideal pruchases. I had a copy of The Close Season I in hand, but when I noticed the absence a goodly set of extras, and a mysterious comment that the show was in "Full Screen", I put it back.

A comment on AMAZON confirmed my suspicions:

Quote
Don't get me wrong, the show is great, but the DVD leaves something to be desired. This program was shown in widescreen originally, and that's the way it is presented here, but not anamorphically enhanced. That means that people with 16:9 monitors will see black bars on the sides as well as the top and bottom. They really blew it with that.

der Brucer

And something called "Rewind is in my Amazon cart" (awaiting another temptation to get free shipping)

And when Woody gets to reading this I'm sure I'll have some Who-ian suggestions)

I also love "Fingers" for Jose--it's perfect!

The comment is somewhat mistaken. The show is not in full screen. It's letterboxed but not anamorphically enhanced, so you're seeing the entire widescreen image, but on HDTVs, you have to expand it yourself to the proper ratio. I was not happy (and also very confused) by that decision, but even non-enhanced, the show looks very sharp. There are some deleted and extended scenes, but the features on this first set are "spare" to say the least.

For fans of JERICHO, I read that it has become the second new show of the season to received a full season order of 22 episodes (HEROES was the first). I'm sure it's just a matter of time for UGLY BETTY as it did very well last night, too.

GREY'S ANATOMY once again finshed higher in households, total viewers, and in the age 18-49 ratings than CSI.

OK---I take back what I said about Caiman---I've been trying to return this DVD and have gotten a lot of idiotic replies but I persisted and finally got my return authorized. The other copy of Aventurera with subtitles is more $ so I am mystified at why they wouldn't want to help me make the exchange. They would make more money if I bought the other one!

At least this was all taken care of in one day...

DR Danise - best wishes on the interview!  If you've got nothing to lose by doing it, I think you're definitely making the right decision.  (Plus the irritating woman will find out you got an interview and she didn't.)   YOU GO GIRL!!!!

A "little bit" without the pilot episode set-up would probably seem a bit wierd.

Its' really a cute show and deserving of some attention.

Yes, Pretty Boy Barnum.

Had really good meetings at LACC, with costume and set people - more about that in the notes.

I'm getting a little annoyed at Town Hall, the venue where we'll be recording Alice and Emily.  They are changing fees (happily, I have my notes, and I confirmed them in an e-mail eight weeks ago), and I will not put up with it.  They're asking me to pay a seven person crew that basically will be doing nothing for us - either he's misunderstanding the way in which we're doing this, or I'm not understanding why I would want to pay a crew for doing nothing.

Good morning Esteemed, chiseled, gluteus-hardened, brightened, and Hassidic BK --

Sorry to see your earlier post about being awake in the middle of the night.  I'm glad that that only happens to me very rarely.

The gangster names take a little thought and consideration.  It has to not only reference some quirk or trait about the person, but has to be (sometimes) kind of benign sounding.  Like "Big Pussy" on the Sopranos.....who was anything but a sweet pussycat.

Would that make Music Guy, Big Organ?

BK -  Good Lord, Lips Landau as my gangster name?  What kind of reputation am I getting?  (That name might have fit in my 20's, but not since then.  :) )

How's about Lepke Landau?

Hiya! DAY OFF!!! It's actually just a day off from driving to and from school... I still have wads of reading to do. Wads. Finally had to break down and use reading glasses!!! For the first time! OY! But they sure help.

I had my Cultural Narrative speech in Communications class yesterday - guess who lifted whole passages right out of Jewish Thighs, pasted them into the required outline format, and delivered them as if she had had time to memorize the whole thing??? Kind of knocked the heck out of the class curve... some of these poor kids would rather be skinned alive than have to speak in front of people. Two kids had meltdowns, trembling, hyperventilating, tears. Wow. The professor is kind - his job is teaching this course called Public Speaking. A few of the students are just learning English - double wow. It's a lesson in courage.

I would love to see these alleged blinding white teeth adorning BK's mouth at some point...

Look, it's Thighs Orloff[/b]!
