I used to love Halloween. When I lived in Alexandria, VA Halloween was a very big deal. I don't know how my street came to be THE place to trick-or-treat, but it was. Hundreds of people would show up, with or without kids. Then the Washington Post had an article on us on the front page. As if we needed more people! Sooo many kids would come to the door that there was no point in going inside; most of us would just dress warm and stand outside. Some of my neighbors liked to dress in costume and we never knew who would be whom (or what) that year. And, of course, many parties. Senator Mark Warner lived down at the corner and his property had a patio directly off the sidewalk. One year he decorated that area appropriately and had an old chest with all sorts of ghoulish things inside. He was right there, mingling with the rest of us. Which is how I like my politicians. It was great fun.
