TOD:

Best French meal - damn sure wasn't in France!

Probably in Montreal where I had a magnificent Chateaubriand served on a huge platter with loads of veggies (it has a fancy French name starting with "b" I cannot find!) The meat is served with a Béarnaise Sauce, château potatoes, asparagus with hollandaise, green beans, grilled tomato, and mushrooms.

Some of the best French cooking I had was in a resort hotel on the beach in Sousse, Tunisia. The hotel catered to German and Scandinavian tourists and had a great kitchen and did every thing up in grand style - French table service (much saucing and flambéing). Each table-chef had his own sauces and his own special dessert crepe.

Best service was probably in Lisbon, Portugal - the restaurants posted cute little boys in Phillip Morris uniforms behind stone pillars whose sole job it was to pop-up and light cigarettes.

Best day-to day eating - Italy - everywhere!

(Best tip on getting a great meal: tell the waiter to pretend it's his birthday and to bring you the meal he would most enjoy.)

Best US French dining:

Le Bistro - Newport RI

French Provencal cuisine to die for. Pot-au-Feu with green olives and crusty French bread; roast pheasant; delectable desserts.

After all this French-food chatter and soon Ben will be here with his oatmeal!

DP Colin and I spend over a month in rural France in 2006. Every meal was a delight - interesting local cuisine, lovely people (and very tolerant of my Schoolboy French) - and of course the company was wonderful.  Fellow diners were always friendly but not intrusive. We have very fond memories of not just the food.

Of course we also dined in Paris -- food not as good but the company was great - DR François.

Good morning, all!  The dreams were peculiar but I remember none of them.  Nope, only vague impressions.

Today I'm meeting Anthony at Toyland to hand him a book he's asked for, some work on either edits or this blasted editing guidelines, and then lunch with a friend at Music Theayte International.

I hear I've got the Macbeths' collective panties in a bunch again.  It was all quite unintentional, but I don't know if it's the revelation that a process is being held up because he forgot to sign a document or my  nudge about the outstanding debt his company owed my father.

DR MBARNUM - Elfrida Derwent seems to have vanished from the face of the firmament.

She started on Broadway in 1925 and made her last appearance in 1945.

It seems she supported a lot of stars in stock....but never achieved stardom.   8)

Unfortunately, at least for me, the report on Deuce is not good.

It is always wonderful to see two stars who are also excellent craftspeople (Angela Lansbury and Marian Seldes). I can watch them do most anything. The play in which they are appearing, though, leaves much to be desired. It's a new Terrence McNally piece and I have to ask why did he write this? The play is weak, trite and at times just plain vulgar. Did he think it was funny to have Lansbury spout the "F" word and the "C" word? If she had been consistently crass and vulgar as a character this might have worked but both characters are wildly inconsistent. I get the feeling things are being revised during previews because there are times when both actresses seem to be looking for lines. I purposely didn't read much about the show before seeing it so I thought it was a two-hander but it's not. The problem is, the other three people in the show are really expendable. They have little purpose and I didn't care for the sportscasters at all. The "fan" of the two tennis pros does have a nice scene with them but his other appearances could be cut without affecting the play at all, but then it would be even shorter than the 90 minutes (no intermission) it already is. The silly prattle by the sportcasters could also be cut and the play might be better for it.

As I said in the beginning, it's wonderful to see two stellar actors on stage and they work very hard to make a mediocre play better. Unfortunately, they don't always succeed. I think they will get good notices but I think Mr. McNally's play will be trashed by the time the show opens on May 6th. It has a "strictly limited engagement" of 18 weeks and I doubt that it will go beyond those 18 weeks.

110 is one of those shows I would so like to see. I doubt it has ever been staged in this country yet the score is beautiful. It's also rare to see a production of "She Loves Me" which is close to perfect IMHO.

I do hope the production of 110 is shown on TV and some kind and thoughtful (aren't they all) Kimlet sends me a copy on DVD.

I've mentioned it before, but the BEST French meal I ever had was very simple: fresh brie on the best baguette I'd ever tasted, devoured on a street corner in Paris.  I guess that's not necessarily a French meal, but they're inexorably linked in my mind!

Good Morning to all. The obvious has been done so life can go on.

I am listening to the overture from Little Me right now on Songs from the Shows. It's a BBC show broadcast on Radio Cleveland (Cleveland in the UK, not Ohio). There are more of these shows then you might think. There is also a musicals radio show broadcast from BBC Radio Devon, and Miss Paige on BBC 2. I must admit I do find her "perkiness" a bit wearing and I don't listen to her show every week. Loving Drowsy Chaperone as much as I do, I wonder how Miss Paige will do playing the Chaperone. She's "starring" in the show even though she's not the star of the show. Ah, Show Business.

Like Tom, I spent 6 weeks in rural northern France in Normandy (we were not there at the same time), specifically

Honfleur (http://www.discover-normandy.info/region1_places_honfleur.htm)

The picture in that link doesn't do it justice. The Vieux Bassin is a gorgeous little Quai. You can sit and drink coffee or eat a pastry and sink into heaven.

Each meal was wonderful though I still marvel at the practice of eating a full meal at 11pm and not finishing until 1am.

I could not agree more. I was lucky enough to see the original, and it was pure, unadulterated joy from beginning to end. And Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke would have been perfection in a movie version. What a missed opportunity! (When SHE LOVES ME fell through, there was also talk of I DO! I DO! for them; that would also have been wonderful.)

A very memorable French experience was living with a French family for a week in Paris. I was eighteen and traveling alone throughout Europe when this kind French family took me in. I would have been fine on my own, of course, but one of their daughters was a hostess at the Olympics for a few weeks and they had an extra bed. Critics: Scientologists' Va. trip a time to prey ________________________________________
The Church of Scientology has dispatched "ministers" to provide "grief counseling" for shell-shocked youth at Virginia Tech - but critics suspect the sect hopes to convert the vulnerable students.

Pastor Fred is Coming To Spread His Screed at VT (http://themoderatevoice.com/religion/12273/virginia-tech-protection-needed-as-with-columbine-funerals-and-memorial-services-pastor-fred-is-coming-to-spread-his-screed-at-vt/)

Quote
Pastor Fred, a/k/a/ Fred Waldron Phelps Sr., who refers to himself and his grown children as “the most hated family in America,” claims he and his Topeka, Kansas-based Westboro Baptist ‘church’ –which is made up almost entirely of his own offspring– are heading to Virginia Tech in order to ‘protest’ the funerals of the slain students and professors. He claims he will use bullhorns and that his family will carry large placards saying some version of “God Hates Virginia Tech.” He claims his ‘gospel’ for the occasion will be, ‘God is glad that the students and professors at VT were slain; that the massacre was God’s happy retribution for the USA’s love of homosexuals.’

As for the Topic of the Day...

Hmm...  I know I've had some very good French meals, but I can't seem to remember where or when right now.

I'm a major fan of Bistro food, and New York City is filled with many wanna-be bistros - Pastis and Balthazar - and even the not-so-haute ones like French Roast and Maison serve some pretty decent fare.

Cooking-wise, I went through a Provençal phase a couple years ago.  I don't think I've ever used and consumed so much tarragon in my life!  But it was all très délicieux

Well the site I referenced also says:

Quote
Not too long ago, whenever Pastor Fred showed up, also mysteriously some silent signal traveled overland amongst the righteous, and sister and brother bikers began showing up at the funerals of vets. The Harley brigades rolled. (There were some Gold Wings and other kinds of bikes too.)

Bikers formed long phalanxes with their bikes and accompanied the funeral corteges along the oil road, and stood at attention at graveside. When Pastor Fred got on his bullhorn, well, 200 Harleys at rev with big guys with moustaches and Viking braids and muscles, and women who look like they might simply snap you with their leathers and send you to the hospital… or heaven… well, Pastor Fred stood there on the hill, his mouth moving, but all you heard was that mellow growl of the Hogs.

For Virginia Tech, all the funerals and memorials are sacred events and the mourners deserve to mourn their dead in peace… sans Fred. And I think it likely that that silent signal has already gone out to some of the last Road Warriors of the Righteous on earth and they are already testing the tension on their chains.

RUN POGO, RUN!

Okefenokee Swamp Endangered (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,266961,00.html)

Quote
WAYCROSS, Ga. —

A swift wildfire destroyed 14 houses Wednesday in southeastern Georgia, where more than 1,000 people had been forced from their homes earlier in the week, officials said. No injuries were reported.

The blaze, which had burned about 40 square miles, or 25,000 acres, ignited Monday near Waycross when a tree fell on a power line, then raced through tinder-dry forest to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, one of the nation's best-preserved wetland areas, officials said.

Many of those evacuated from the area went to a shelter or moved in with relatives, officials said.

Classes at Waycross schools were canceled after buses were unable to run on some routes because of smoky conditions, and the private Okefenokee Swamp Park was evacuated and its animals moved to safety.

They picketed the show.  In fact, they picket almost any touring Broadway show on the basis that homosexuals were somehow involved in the creation and production of the show.

However, the locals heading into the theatre were so used to the protests, that they didn't bat an eye as they walked past the signs and the bullhorns.

The saddest part was seeing all the younger members of his "family" - the five to ten-year olds who were also part of the protest, holding up signs, yelling things at people.  And holding video cameras.  He uses all the footage to show how "America" continues to "embrace homosexuality" by their attendance at cultural events.  And if anyone "dares" to challenge him, then he uses that footage to show that "they" are the "true haters", not him and his followers.

Whenever the Phelps clan makes an appearance, I always wish a group of folks would show up with buckets and "slop" them with offal.

Unfortunately, even though that they may be a "good thing", since Mr. Phelps actually obtains the permits to protest (if needed), such an act would most likely result in an arrest.  And not of Mr. Phelps.

-We could all take the 5:48, 6:12 or 6:29PM train up, and then cab it to the theatre.  And then take the 10:45PM train back.  (It gets back to GCT at 11:52PM.)

Or if you wanted to head up earlier, I'm guessing we could arrange for a dinner with DR singdaw too.  And possibly avoid the Peak Fare too.

Ricardo, or van Pelt?

HA! Ricardo. :)

As a general rule, we do try to indicate **SPOILER** before posting such information.  I myself am about 6 episodes behind on Lost.

Yeah, this post did not observe that particular rule. But I guess there's no way to completely avoid spoilers.

FYI, I currently watch Lost, Desperate Housewives, L&O Special Victims Unit, Grey's Anatomy, Gilmore Girls, The Shield, The Office, 30 Rock, Scrubs, Boston Legal, Without a Trace, The Simpsons, Monk and, of course, Idol.

Favorite TV shows of the past include Lost, Arrested Development, Everwood, Monty Python, Mr. Show, Kids in the Hall, NYPD Blue, Columbo, Seinfeld, Larry Sanders, West Wing, The Prisoner, Little Britain, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mary Tyler Moore, Taxi, and my favorite TV show ever, Sports Night.

Good lord...I've wasted my life!

Wonder what they've been changing.

Well, a friend of mine who also saw it during the first week of previews is seeing it again tonight.  Once I get the report from him...

DR Jane - If Keith's Aunt and cousin don't object to some risque humor, I'd recommend Spelling Bee.  And if they don't object to some really risque humor, I'd suggest Avenue Q.  -And even though it may not be the "original", I still think the current revival of A Chorus Line is dependable - if they haven't seen it before.  Oh, and Spamalot is still running.

It was probably me spoiling the fun. I don't watch much tv, so I never think to put "Spoiler" in my post when I do happen to catch some tv news.

This production of "A Chorus Line" is THRILLING!  I saw it here in San Francisco prior to its opening on Broadway.  I only had the movie (ugh!) to compare it to.

Warning, long post ahead.

Jane, here are some random thoughts on what's playing on Broadway right now:

110 in the Shade-It's not a fun, laughing musical comedy but it's one of my favorite shows and it's got a score with some beautiful songs. I would recommend it even though I haven't seen it yet.

25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee-This is a fun show (with some adult humor though not crass or unpleasant)

A Chorus Line-Tickets are available and they would probably like it.

Avenue Q-I love this show but there is some "racy" humor and political stuff that may offend some people. I recommend it because I love it but it's not for everyone

Beauty and the Beast-It's closing in July. It's a little too long but for Disney's first foray into live musical theatre I think they did a good job (in spite of the director)

Chicago-I don't think this is what Keith's Aunt and Cousin are looking for (not that I'm saying it's bad, I just don't know if Chicago is right for them)

Coast of Utopia-Not recommened. Not because it's bad (I haven't seen any of the three parts) but based on my knowledge of the productions, it's too heavy for a night in the theatre

The Color Purple-Not "fun" in the fun sense. It's a show with problems but I found much of it quite moving and excellent. I don't know how it will be now with Fantasia in the lead (I know that sounds disparaging but I'm not a fan of stunt casting and though she can sing, this role calls for deep, intense performance, not just hyper Idol singing)

Company-UGH!!!

Coram Boy-Definitely not fun. Not bad if you want an epic theatre experience but it's not a funny night in the theatre

Curtains-I would recommend Curtains

Deuce-UGH again

The Drowsy Chaperone-You know that I love this show and recommend it to all

Frost/Nixon-While this does not fall into the "fun" category it is brilliant and I recommend it to anyone who loves good theatre

Grey Gardens-Again, I love this show (there are just as many who don't, including a dear friend who left after Act the First) but it's not for everyone and I don't classify it as "fun"

Hairspray-This is a fun show. I haven't seen it for a long time so I don't know how it's holding up but it was great when I saw it

Inherit The Wind-Not one of your classic fun shows. I hear it's quite good but I haven't seen it yet

Jersey Boys-If they can get tickets, I would recommend it

Journey's End-Takes place in a trench during World War I. I hear it's brilliant. I will try to see it next week since I can't imagine how much longer it will run with approximately 35% average attendance

Legally Blonde-Fred (FJL) thinks it is a lot of fun. Word of mouth is good and I do want to see it. I enjoyed the movie more than I thought I would so I would give this a try

Les Mis-Not "fun" but now that Daphne Ruben-Vega is out of the show it's better. If they have seen it before, there won't be much new. It will be like watching the movie version

The Lion King-It does not reside high on my list of good shows but many people see it and enjoy it mightily so if they can get tickets (they most likely can) they may like it

LoveMusik-You need to be a Kurt Weill fan and again, not a "fun" show

Mamma Mia-I wouldn't recommend it but I have friends whom I respect who saw it and loved it. It is a "fun" show and if they are Abba fans they may enjoy themselves

Mary Poppins-I can recommend it. I honestly enjoyed it. It's not great musical theatre but there is a lot to enjoy

Moon for the Misbegotten-Not for a fun night in the theatre!

Phantom of the Opera-If they like the show it might be fun for them to see it on Broadway. I don't recommend it to people because I'm not a fan but I'm not the grand arbiter of good and bad either

The Pirate Queen-If they like Michael Flatley and Lord of the Dance mixed with Irish history then they might enjoy it. If stomping on the stage with heavy feet and ship oars makes them cringe, then stay away

Prelude to a Kiss-Not a fun show. I did like it very much but I don't think I would recommend it for someone looking for light fare

The Producers-It closes Sunday so that's out

Rent-I would say no. I need my hearing and the music is SO LOUD that I came out with a headache

Spamalot-If either is a fan of Monty Python then they should see the show. It, like the Producers, is NOT the best thing in musical theatre since Oklahoma, but it is a crass, funny and well-done take on a Monty Python movie.

Spring Awakening-Nope. Not because I think it's bad or good, I just don't think Keith's Aunt would like to see German expressionism and teenage angst set to a modern rock score

Talk Radio-Not recommended based on the subject matter. A dark look at the slow descent of a talk radio host

Tarzan-There are some breathtaking moments, especially the beginning shipwreck sequence but the entire evening was rather flat and boring. As I said in my BBC review, it's more like a theme park ride than a Broadway Musical

Wicked-I think the book is much, much better than the show but I have to look at them as two different animals and Wicked is good theatre in the sense that most people leave the show happy and humming. It has done the job it set out to do, I believe.

The Year of Magical Thinking-If they like Vanessa Redgrave and can get a ticket, yes. It's a one-person show based on Joan Didion's book by the same name about her recovery from the unexpected death of her husband. The play has been expanded to include the aftermath of the death of her daughter a short time after the death of her husband. No, it's not "fun"

And that, dear Nursie, is a quick look at what's playing on Broadway. My opinions are just that, my opinions. Some shows I like more than others and while there are shows I wouldn't recommend (because I don't like them) I would never disparage another's choice of show to see or like.

This production of "A Chorus Line" is THRILLING!  I saw it here in San Francisco prior to its opening on Broadway.  I only had the movie (ugh!) to compare it to.

I would have liked to this current production out in San Francisco.  When it was on a larger stage.  I heard - and saw - that some of the choreography had to be modified when the show came to New York due to the difference in the stage dimensions.  The "line" just fits from edge of the proscenium arch to the other - they had a bit more "side room" in San Fran.  And since the stage is not as deep here in NYC, they've been having a problem with the dancers kicking - and cracking - the mirrors when they head upstage.

*And I have to say, I'm very curious to see the show in July after all the one-year contracts are up.  Who stays.  Who goes.  Who comes in.  -And that line just keeps on kicking.

Can you elaborate?

If I could see one show on Broadway right now, it'd be 110 in the Shade. I don't know the score (yet), but the songs from Lost in Boston were magical. If those were an indication of how good the non-cut songs are, it's gotta be great.

Sure, although first let me say that Simple Little Things, A Man and a Woman and Old Maid (the closing moment of Act 1) from 110 are three of my favorite songs. I can cry at Simple Little Things.

Although I knew Sondheim shows before I heard Company, when I did hear the score for the first time (in 1970 with the famous purple cast album cover) I fell in love. I've seen the show many times and while not all were good (and I do have trouble with the book) I never left any of them with the annoyance and anger I felt after I saw Company. I am not at all opposed to reinterpretations of musicals. A theatre piece is not like a movie and it will be different (usually) every time it's done. My problem with Company is the concept of stripping it down to practically nothing and having the actors play instruments as well as perform. It worked better for me in Sweeney Todd but it didn't work AT ALL (IMHO) for Company. Doyle's (the director) concept destroyed any cohesion in the script and his staging was abominable. There were directorial choices that made no sense. I know this was part of his concept but not one actor looked at another actor when they were speaking. There was ridiculous mime, including eating and drinking. The Judo scene, which can be very funny, was dreadful. The actors/musicians were more musician than actor (Sorry, Jose, I'm not dissing musicians). Most were making their Broadway debuts (with a few exceptions) and it looked like it. There were even good people in the show who came off badly. I like Barbara Walsh, I really do. She was great in Falsettos and I liked her in Big. Her Joanne in Company did not work. Her drunk scene before Ladies Who Lunch was out of College Acting. I didn't believe for a second that she was drunk. She was indicating all over the stage. Also having her play the triangle was a new level of stupidity, IMHO. Everyone in the show was supposed to play an instrument. She, obviously, didn't play an instrument, so she got to play the triangle. It's like the stupidity of Patti LuPone playing the tuba in Sweeney. Lots of people thought it was a great joke but I thought it was ridiculous. She hadn't played since Marching Band in high school and it was an abysmal sight gag, nothing more. Oh, and when LuPone wasn't playing the tuba or singing or acting, she playe "the triangle"

This has turned into an unexpected rant and I apologize for that but Company pushes some buttons in me because this particular production has been praised as being brilliant and cutting edge and a whole new way to look at the show. Those of us who don't like it are often accused of "not getting it". One poster (not here on HHW) actually said that people who didn't like the show probably didn't have enough "life experience" to understand the show. Others have said things like "you just want carbon copies of the show with no thought" None of that is true. Believe me I got the show. I just didn't like it. I think the reason I got/get so rankled when talking about  this show is because I really love it and I think this concept did nothing to make it a better show. We have to bring in new audiences to keep musical theatre alive. Spring Awakening is a good example. But you don't have to destroy old shows as a way of bringing in new people.

I hope this stripping down concept has reached the end of the run. I know that John Doyle is scheduled to do a production of Merrily We Roll Along (another Sondheim show with a problematic book and a wonderful score) in England later this year. There is no word yet if he will do it with actor/musicians. One can only hope not. When word came out that he would be doing Merrily some wag said, "what's he going to do this time, make them play the music backwards as well?"

If you don't know Merrily, the show takes place in reverse time. It begins in the "present" and we watch the characters move back in time from adults to high school.

Enough already (aren't you sorry you asked  ;))

I will now get back to work and leave you with the thought that I am not a cranky old man, I just get vehement about some things, and hey, you asked me to elaborate!

I have spent the last week or so listening to Wonderful Town (the Donna Murphy version). This is my first exposure to it, and I wasn't crazy about the score. I chose it because my best friend is doing a local version up in San Jose this summer (as Wreck), and also West Side Story was my very first musical love. Unfortunately, Wonderful Town shows a much jazzier/swingy side of Leonard Bernstein that I didn't much care for. There are some very pretty ballads, and a couple of other cool things, but overall I was disappointed. (Do most people here love it?)

Yesterday I began "drilling" a new OCR into my head: Is There Life After High School? This one is much more to my liking; even though the production efforts are considerably fewer, I'm finding it full of hummable tunes. I chose this one because it got a five-star review in The Theatermania Guide to Musical Theater Recordings.

Perish the thought! I really enjoyed reading your rant. I've never seen an actual production of Company -- I just know the purple OCR. Same with Sweeney Todd; all I know is the original Lansbury record. So it's fun to hear about these things and enjoy (or not enjoy) them vicariously!

A friend of mine saw the recent LuPone Sweeney Todd and HATED HATED HATED it. From his description of it, I probably would have as well.

I saw the original on Broadway - with Roz Russell
I saw the revival with Donna Murphy - and she's no Roz Russell.

That said, the revival was vastly superior in one regard - Bernsteins's music was front and center as the star! (No pit, no electronic wizards sequestered on the seventh floor - lots of real live musicians, with glowing strings and shinny brass, and big bass drums - all sitting right up on risers across the entire upstage!) The glorious Bernstein orchestrations filled the theatre - you could reach out and touch the music!

In West Side Story you got the symphonic Bernstein (building up to Mass) - in Wonderful town you get the youthful Bernstein still frisky after Fancy Free and On The Town. By West Side Story Sputnik was circling the planet and teen-angst was in vogue. In Wonderful Town you have a simplistic joy in living, later seen peeking through in Candide.

I too loathed the SWEENEY TODD; John Doyle is a complete fraud as a director, in my book.

I'll speak up in defence of WONDERFUL TOWN, especially the 1958 tv cast recording.  Rosalind Russell owns the role, and any score with a composition as wonderful as "The Wrong Note Rag" is high on my list.  Bernstein's compositional gifts, his slides in and out of key (CANDIDE's "Auto de Fe" is a good example) , and his way with a melody amaze me.  Is it as good a score as ON THE TOWN or CANDIDE?  No; they had three weeks to write it and go into production once Leroy Anderson was fired.  Still, "A Little Bit In Love" and the great "Conversation Piece" enchant me at every listen.

As for cast albums, I prefer original casts over revisicals: the casting is done with the authors' involvement and the music is usually done the way the composer intended, two important issues a lot of the new recordings miss.

Musso and Frank is the oldest restaurant in the city of Los Angeles and Hollywood - it began operation, I believe, in 1917 or thereabouts.  It's an old-fashioned chop house.  It's on Hollywood Boulevard between Highland and Cahuenga, right next door to what used to be the Vogue Theater - it's still the Vogue, but it's been closed for years.  The time is still to be determined - but it'll probably be around 7:30 I'd think.

No picking, DR Der Brucer, just correcting the orchestration credit: Don Walker, Sid Ramin, Hershy Kay (?), and Joe Glover, I believe.

I prefer the 1958 cast to the OBC because I like Jacquelyn McKeever and Siddney Chaplin better than Edie Adams and George Gaynes, but Lehman Engel conducted both recordings and he knows the score inside out.

I'm a fan of the score. I wasn't crazy about the Donna Murphy revival on record (she's fine; didn't like the actress playing Eileen), but I would still liked to have seen the show. I've never seen the show staged except on that TV show.

'Allo all.  Just thought I'd drop in between the random chores around the apartment and let those who watch The Office know that the episode I am *fingers crossed* in will be airing next week, April 26th -- "Product Recall."

The best places to watch for me are in the background when Jim and Andy first pull up to the school they are going to (I am in a black hoodie and walk behind them as they are getting out of the car); another prime spot (if they didn't edit it out) will be in a hallway when Andy recognizes his "girlfriend" -- they did several takes where there is a 30-something teacher who Jim mistakenly thinks Andy is talking about at first and I am right behind her - who I believe they pan in on...

Other assorted places are in a hallway scene when the bell rings and everyone scatters, I run into a classroom right behind Jim - then there are the obligatory courtyard scenes where everyone is wandering around.  When Jim and Andy exit out of the school (again, if they kept that shot), myself and another guy run out of the building right before the two of them exit.  Just keep your eyes peeled for a brown haired guy in a black hoodie, a green sweater, and jeans...  :D

The nice thing about THE OFFICE DVDs is that you may be in the unaired segments on the DVD set when it comes out this fall, DR Cason, if what you were in gets cut for the broadcast version.

I was pleasantly surprised last year to find that much of the unaired footage is every bit as funny as what makes it on air.

Since lunch ran long, I spent almost all afternoon watching I'LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS, the very nice biopic of lyricist Gus Kahn. Doris' voice has never sounded so mellow than on these songs, and how funny to hear a dubber singing "Love Me or Leave Me" a few years before DOris got her chance to sing it in the film of that title.

The transfer looks grand: very sharp, great contrast and almost no damage to the print used for the transfer at all. Looked like a brand new movie.

Great...cuz I'm not watching enough TV already! ;)

As for Dr. Who, I am not sure my heart can stand all of the high-tech special effects on that show.

I never watched the show before the new series started with Christopher Eccleston, so I've only known the high-teck special effects...which I like. :)

Greetings from beautiful Tiffin, Ohio!  After accompanying DH Richard to PT, having my glasses adjusted, taking DH home, going to the grocery and bank, and packing, I left home at 3pm and arrived here exactly 3 hours later.  As I walked into the hotel, the clerk was saying to her customer, "No, Mrs. Palmer hasn't arrived yet."  And I said, "Yes, she has!"  The customer is the AAUW consultant with whom I've been working on tomorrow's "Financially Fit for Life" program.  She'd just flown from Washington, DC, and driven from the Cleveland airport.

My mental picture of that show is Tom Baker talking to a large green-and-yellow styrofoam fiddler crab.

Hrumph...so the people doing "Cabaret" that I auditioned for on Sunday called me today and "after much deliberation" offered me the part of the Emcee.  The only problem is that it is out in Woodland Hills (a good 20 minute drive on the 101 from here WITHOUT traffic -- and we'd rehearse nights), wouldn't pay or earn me Equity points, and most possibly take me away from working weeknights...

So, as much as I'd love to do the role, at this point, I don't think it is in the cards for me...damn...
Title: Re:FRENCHING
Post by: Cason on April 19, 2007, 04:21:39 PM
On top of that if I committed to them now, I'd take myself out of some auditions coming up that all have pay and/or Equity points and would be at that "next level" I am trying to crack into right now...

And I wouldn't want to take myself out of contention for those, nor would I want to back out on Cabaret once I'd said yes...

Well, it was a huge cattle call for "Spring Awakening" -- and I got there about 10 minutes before everything officially started and was handed number 246.  Sadly I was meeting my aunt and cousins to see "Wicked" at 2, so I ended up bailing at around 1, but it was still a good learning experience -- one that'll hopefully come in handy at "The History Boys" cattle call May 12th...

Moral of the story:  Get there UBER-early.

Sadly, they settled on THE GIN GAME instead.

Bernstein as a conductor of this score isn't at all in the league of Samuel Krachmalnick, and he thinks it's a "serious" composition.  On the positive side:
   1.  the musical parodies are back in the countries they should be in
   2.  the orchestra is wonderful
   3.  it's the fullest version of an amazing score
   4.  Bernstein disliked the 1973 and City Opera versions

Bretty! How can you NOT know about Musso and Frank's? I don't even live in LA and I've been there! It's legendary!

Well, first of all, like so many in L.A., I'm not really a native. I came from "back East." Since living here, I've spent most of my time in a two-mile radius. And, let's face it, some of the most famous restaurants in the world are actually much closer to me -- Matsuhisa, Michael's, Spago, Morton's, etc.

The real issue, though, is that I'm very much a "bottom feeder." I don't really go in for all that fancy stuff; I'm a Big Mac and fries guy. I've got zero taste -- I've never even been to any museums in the area (my idea of a great artist is Jim Warren). Beginning to get the picture?

TOD - my favorite "French" meal was the first gathering of a potluck dinner group that formed among some of my best friends in graduate school.  We decided that we'd pick a different country each time and each person would prepare one course.  I don't remember anything about what we ate, but I do remember it as one of my first "grown-up" social gatherings.  And I'm looking forward to visiting with that evening's hostess when we're both in Washington, DC, in June for ALA.

So, Bretty, did you say you were a Jersey boy?  What part?  I used to live in Lodi.

I was born in Miami and grew up in Florida. But from 1985 to 1995, I lived in Paterson, Trenton and then finally Maplewood, New Jersey.

I do not miss the snow.

I finished that MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. episode, and it was pretty lame, I must admit. I'm amazed this show was ever so popular, but I guess anything with spies and secret agents did well in the mid 1960s. The show was almost bereft of action, and the acting was pretty stolid.

Jack Lord was the primary guest star doing a lousy middle European accent. Neamiah Persoff was another guest star along with Leslie Parrish.

THE SOPRANOS had a very talky episode with fallout from Christopher's movie CLEAVER (nothing to do with the Beav, Ward, Qally, and June). The Johnny Sack sequences were pretty involving, but this was more a set-up for the remainder of the season's (and series') story.

And I ended the evening catching up with that CSI episode which had eluded me earlier in the season. I wish I hadn't watched. I got really angry and irritated by the inquest sequences as Greg was raked over the coals after nearly being beaten to death because in trying to stop some beatings, he ran down an attacker with a county truck and was then pulled out of the truck and stomped nearly to death.

This was the second of four miniature killings that have been featured on the show this season, but since last week's show went back over each of the four murder scenes, I already was familiar with this part of the show.

Yes, the DVR has totally changed HOW MUCH TV I can watch. With its capacity and my access to over-the-air HDTV broadcasts also part of the equation, I do manage to watch all the glut of Thursday shows (and other nights with multiple shows coming on at the same broadcast hour) without having to resort to reruns. Good Evening!

So... I board the 5:23 train at Grand Central Station heading up to Westport, and I happen to find a car where a couple of other All About Us-sers are sitting.  About halfway into the trip, I fall asleep... And about 20 minutes later I wake myself up... With a loud snore/snort....

It was good for a giggle.  ;)

Alas, I never fully woke back up until after the show was done.  It was a good show, but I felt in a bit of a fog tonight.   -And Mr. Kander came back to see the show tonight too - and he said the pit sounded great.  Who am I to complain then?

Good evening dear DR Cason..... Good and lovely evening DRs......

I somehow feel like I must be the lone voice in the wilderness here, regarding the food at Musso & Frank.

I happen to think it is very good, because it is honest, traditional American cooking using good ingredients.  They have not tried to satisfy each passing phase and trend that goes around, but stick with a (proudly) traditional and old-fashioned bunch of selections.

I became really tired of restaurants foisting off 2 ounces of seared (cold in the middle) tuna perched on the top of cellophane noodles...which are sitting on the required "bed of arugala".... and with a few drops of a chile flavored oil on the outside edges of the plate..... and all for only $32.00 .

Pounded Steak with Country Gravy...... now that is food!!
Title: Re:FRENCHING

I also happen to love Nate 'n Al's on Beverly Blvd...... I used to eat there quite often when I lived in Nichols Canyon.  In those days (the late 60s) I would often see Sam Jaffe, Milton Berle, Alan King, and others..... all happily munching away, just like us commoners.

Brett, if you really enjoy musicals, you must get a hold of THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X**, music and lyrics by BK (and featuring a knockout performance by Cason); and THE LAST STARFIGHTER with book by FJL and music an lyrics by Skip Kennon.

Both CDs are available at Kritzerland.com

** Orchestrations by elmore3003

Singdaw had to figure all this out by himself. How many other secrets are we going to reveal?

Will do. What's the verdict on The First Nudie Musical? Never seen the movie, and was thinking about picking up the "special edition" DVD.

I'm replying to last night's posts without first catching up, so...

BUT, surely, we are of ONE MIND on TFNM.
