The original was set in 1930 with flashbacks to pre-WW1.
On character dies of a war injury.

You could easily move the play to 1955 with flashbacks to pre WWII.

Govers Corners has to maintain a degree in innocence - moving the 30s to Donna Reed's 50s would work, but I think setting the play in the 1990s with returns to Viet Nam would not.

DR edisaurus - I managed to work in "the Big Chicken" while introducing myself to Shuler Hensley.  Got a good chuckle out of him.  Thanks!  :)

I love it! Does the playhouse still exist? And did you ever go into your "dressing room" and refuse to come out until all of your on-set demands were met?

The playhouse no longer exists. I already had a playhouse--the one I used as a "spook house" (this was in the 1950's, folks, so no misinterpretations) at Halloween--and didn't really need a second one. Plus, the dressing room was bare and one's imagination only goes so far--or mine did. I was not the sort of little girl to make demands--this was pre-Women's Lib. Besides, I appreciated my dad bringing it home for me. So, no, I was not acting the prima donna.

...And speaking of Curtains... ;)

Since All About Us is another Kander & Ebb piece, Mr. Kander's current assistant was there this morning.  He'll be double-duty over the next few weeks between both projects.  -And we had good chat about how the show, Curtains that is, is coming together.

Great story, DR JEANNE.  Thanks for sharing.  I loved MR ADAMS AND EVE, although even then, I didn't think Ida Lupino was so hot at comedy....I guess Lucy and Joan and Gale had spoiled me for anyone else.

Well...

On the Town -- cause of all the 1950s period stuff (I love working with hats and accessories)

Hmmm...doesn't ON THE TOWN take place during WWII?  Or does it?  I don't remember it making any specific war references, come to think of it.

I'm not sure, but our director opted for circa 1950, so 1950s she and the characters got...

One really cool, for lack of a better word, thing about this production is that Thornton Wilder's nephew will be coming in throughout the rehearsal process to check in on things.  -He is now the "protector" of the Wilder Estate as it were.  Apparently, he has tons of memorabilia that he'll bringing to share with the company.  I'm really looking forward to checking out some of the materials he'll be bringing in.

And one neat bit of Thornton Wilder Trivia...

When The Skin of Our Teeth was presented at Westport Country Playhouse, Thornton Wilder, himself, played Mr. Antrobus.  -To which Shuler Hensley replied, "No pressure."

Speaking of Imelda Marcos, my real weakness is sweaters. Lately I've taken to saying, "Imelda Marcos has her shoes; I have my sweaters." But I WEAR the sweaters!! That's truly my IMS.

In other news...

I'm actually feeling a bit run down, most likely a result of the crazy weather and ever-changing temps over the past couple of days.  My sinuses seem to be full.  I was invited to stay for the initial music rehearsal this afternoon, but since the conductor and his assistant were both there today, I would have been just another body in the room... So, I headed home.  Well, actually, I headed over to Whole Foods to stock up on protein bars for upcoming days of auditions, as well as some packets of instant oatmeal for my hotel room.

I'm just going over my various lists to make sure I have everything set for the next couple of days, and I'm gonna try to pack my luggage sometime in the next few hours so that I can just relax and sleep later tonight.  -I hope to leave for the airport a little after 6:00am.

Well... The original Broadway production starred Tallulah Bankhead as Sabina, Fredric March as Mr. Antrobus, and Montgomery Clift as Henry, among others.

Doesn't that make it appealing?

DR JRand - Seriously...

It's about Life.  Good and Evil.  Family.  From Creation through the Ice Age, The Deluge and the End(?) of the World.  Admittedly, it's a lot of stuff to cover in three acts, but Wilder does it and in a very compact and unique way.  Even the breaking of the fourth wall, which is more or less commonplace nowadays, still seems fresh and startling at times.  -To me at least.

When was the last time you read the play?  Wilder made some tweaks - very small ones - to the play throughout the years, but at one point and time, there were actually two different versions in print at the same time.  Again, the tweaks were small with the most notable alteration in the Henry's breakdown in the third act), but I think they do make a difference in the end.

It's also one of those plays that plays better than it reads.  Did you ever catch the Old Globe Production that Jack O'Brien directed when it was on PBS' "American Playhouse"?  That's how I was introduced to the play, and I was so happy when it finally was made available on VHS (and DVD) as part of the Broadway Archive series.  There are some fanciful moments here and there, and even some slight liberties taken with Wilder's text, but the play is there in spades, and it communicates Wilder's message quite effectively.

Thanks for the report about AVENUE Q, DR Jose. When I saw the show a month after it won the Tony, I went in thinking it couldn't have deserved the prize over WICKED, but honestly, it was so much fun, so charming, so tuneful, so RIGHT that I could easily see why it won the award (I saw WICKED and THE BOY FROM OZ on that trip). Had I been a Tony voter, I probably would have voted for it, too.

I was fortunate to see all the Tony nominated musicals that season - actually three of them in one week as it would turn out.  And, yes, I thought Avenue Q truly was the best of the bunch.  *And I even happened to be lucky enough to see Wicked when both Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth were both in.  ;)
