Listening to Diana Krall's just about to be released new CD, Quiet Nights.  Beautiful charts by Claus Ogerman and production by Tommy LiPuma, but this woman puts me to sleep.  She just thinks that this breathy thing is so sexy and it's so boring after one song - she flatlines ever song - no variety, no nuance, no color, just breath and trying to do what far lesser singers did so effortlessly - singers like Astrud Gilberto and her look.  Her phrasing is so weird - just not a fan.  How these people cross over and sell albums is really a mystery to me and always has been.  It's a
real 60s album without any of the soul - strictly paint by numbers instead of an original painting.

I have to agree--I've never been a Krall fan.  I've tried a number of times, but I just find her uninspiring.

So, I had lousy poached eggs and one and a half pancakes - what else to eat is now the question.  I did proof another forty something pages - I must say this book has one of my favorite characters that I've ever created - he just makes me laugh and laugh and just when I think I can laugh no more, I laugh again.

Totally agree too!

If I want "breathy", Peggy Lee did it better, and she knew about phrasing!

Miss Krall should stick to piano playing!
Not only she bores me but her voice irritates me!

Mel Tormé, where are you??!

  "Lousy Poached Eggs?"

Ain't that an Hoagy Carmichael song?  :D

BK, have you heard recent CDs of either Janis Siegel or Cheryl Bentyne?  They're the two women of The Manhattan Transfer and they have talent and skill as musicians...they're not just singers.  I highly recommend checking both of them out. :D

Of course, I'm biased. ;) I've been a fan of TMT since I was in high school and have seen them in concert many times, the last time was just a couple of weeks ago!

And now, it's time for me to leave work, go home for a bit of dinner and then Gilligan's Island - The Musical!

Until later!

If I  had to chose a Peters, it would be Roberta! ;)

But then, nobody's asking me! :)

Didn't Roberta Peters appear on an episode of "Columbo" - or some other detective series - during the 1970's?  I seem to remember her singing "Sempre Libera" in a recital setting (with a pianist).

I don't believe that Roberta Peters ever had a pianis.

I believe that Janis Siegel is one of the people who voted to give me the Jazziz Vocal Jazz award I won several years ago.  Though it may have been one of the New York Voices.  I know that Jon Hendricks was.

Just finished reviewing a pretty lame older British sitcom called HALLELUJAH and discovered in my research that its star, Thora Hird, was Mel Torme's mother-in-law.

Any DRs planning on turning your lights out at 8:30 tonight?

EarthHour

Since we had an "Earth Week" back in September, we think we'll pass tonight.

Heck, I think you've been a fan of TMT since back when Tim Hauser still had hair!

I remembered that when I worked on La Cienega Blvd., the actor who played the Captain on Gilligian's Island owned a restaurant on the next block.  I saw him almost every week tending to the plants at the front of the restaurant.
