Title: BEWITCHED, BOTHERED, AND BEWILDERED BK
Post by: bk on April 14, 2006, 12:13:55 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you were alternately bewitched, bothered, or bewildered by the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the bewitched, bothered, and bewildered cows come home.

And the word of the day is: EGGPLANT!

You say "EGGPLANT"
I say "AUBERGINE"

Let's call the whole thing off!

Okay, I've never actually said "aubergine" without it being a reference to the (predominantly) British way to say "eggplant." ::)

In my DVD player:  the Rosie O'Donnell documentary that Matt H. sent me!!  Thank you! :-* After that will be "The Pointer Sisters:  All Night Long."  It's a film of a live concert that they gave in 1974 in Africa.

In my CD player:  a whole bunch of things that I've gotten recently.

In my VCR:  nothing. :( I somehow forgot to set my VCR to tape Wednesday's episode of "Lost!"  I thought that I had set my VCR, but I didn't.  FORTUNATELY, my niece tapes all of the episodes, so I'll get to watch her copy.  After that will have to be "Desperate Housewives" from a week and a half ago.  My mom has my tape, so I have to get it before she accidentally tapes over it.

Good morning, all!  Where the hell is this year going to?  It seems like January was only yesterday.

Here's a historical tidbit for you all: on this very day, April 14, 1865, Good Friday, John Wilkes Booth assassinated Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theatre during a performance of the comedy, OUR AMERICAN COUSIN.

So, today I have my annual Good Friday prayer for the dead, check in on my father, edit my critical report on Act One of Toyland for the person doing the layout for the score, laundry, and that's enough.  Yesterday, I had to edit my Main Report to the Toyland edition; it took about six hours, but it was nice to go back and reread something I'd totally forgotten.  I  did some fixes, added a few words, and I felt satisfied with what I had.

TOD:
CD:  ASSASSINS (see above), BABES IN TOYLAND, COSI FAN TUTTE
DVD:  A Inspector Lynley mystery, ELLA ENCHANTED
VCR:  El Cheapo del Stinko

I just finished recording some old things for Anthony. He's putting together another mix CD, although his mix Cds would not be popular in clubs today unless they suddenly started playing cylinders from 1890. He has enough material from cylinders and old 78s for a 10-disc set, ranging from a snippet of Henry Irving, a snippet of Edwin Booth (brother of John Wilkes), even a snip of Oscar Wilde reading from The Ballad of Reading Gaol (Jail for those of you wondering) to things from the mid-1920s. Quite a collection.

We will probably watch some Slings and Arrows this evening. Anthony has dance class on Saturday but we have no special plans for Easter. I bought a piece of ham so perhaps on Easter Sunday we will have boiled potatoes, ham and green beans. I'll have to see what's at the green market tomorrow. If one of the vendors has those wonderful new potatoes (I like the red ones) and the green beans I'm all set. I already got a chocolate covered cake in the shape of an Easter Egg so we're ready with dessert even if we don't have dinner.

Here is something REALLY freaky.  8)

I can't make the connection to be sure by birthdate or bio of JL....but it is still freaky.   Might explain why she doesn't have any credits after the Donna Reed show in 1965 until THE SWIMMER in 1968.

Off to work.

Oh, last night we had a thunderstorm.  I got up after the first loud clap of thunder, I got up to let Blue out of her pen and onto the back porch.  As I turned on the yard light, she was running to meet me on the deck.  No digging.....gate still closed....she had scaled the 10 foot wire fence of her pen....  Guess she doesn't like thunder!

I meant to comment yesterday on THE ROMAN SPRING OF MRS. STONE which I have always loved. I cannot believe Vivien Leigh didn't get an Oscar nomination for it. Lenya's superb, of course, but I think Leigh's character is so difficult to pull off and she's does it magnificently.

The movie was remade a couple of years ago and very well, too. I saw it on one of the pay cable channels. It could be somewhat franker with the sexual escapades naturally, but the basic story remained true to Tennessee Williams' novella.

I just get so tired of Warners and other DVD companies putting out these boxed sets with DVDs we already have mixed in with new ones. Sometimes you have to buy the box to get the ones not already out on DVD (like the Fox Mel Brooks set). I already have STREETCAR and CAT, but I want SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH and ROMAN SPRING. I hope they will be available separately.

BTW, I understand the BLAZING SADDLES in the Brooks set is the original (inferior) Warner issue of the film, not the spiffed up remastered edition that came out later. That's a sneaky way for Warners to clear out its inventory of those old DVDs by handing them over to Fox to release in their box.

Last night I watched for the first time one of DR JRand's favorite films, Black Narcissus.  Oy, what a wonderful movie!  I can't get it out of my mind--so many of its images and themes continue to haunt me.  And I keep thinking, how did they get away with it in 1947?  The Catholic Movie Review Board (or whatever it was called) must have had a fit!  This was no Bells of St. Mary's, that's for sure!

Earlier in the week, I was bitching about TCM airing a pan and scan version of THE YELLOW ROLLS-ROYCE and said I would write TCM about it (which I did). Here's the reply I received this morning:

The film's distributor gave us the pan & scan version, which seems to be the only version we can find at this time. TCM is currently looking for a widescren version to air.

Trust me when I say we are not happy about it either.

Best,
TCM Web Staff

Of course, in my e-mail, I mentioned that a widescreen laserdisc of the film was released 15 years ago and suggested that a widescreen version did indeed exist. I guess they didn't want to address that part. Anyway, I was pleased to receive an answer, as unsatisfying as it was.

Last night I went to visit with my high school chum Felice - who came with me and my sister to BK's final show of DECEIT, and who played the Goatseller in WORLD OF SHOLEM ALECHEM (sp?) with Bruce.

We had decided to get together once a week to write on a new project of mine... I hope the "group" will grow... think "Chorus Line"...

She has a great, wonderful, marvelous, HUGE dawg named Zorro - when he stands on his hind legs and puts his paws on my shoulders, he towers over me. That's a big puppy boy!

I had a swell evening - Felice has a day job, so I brought dinner -- a huge salad of romaine and mixed baby greens and sauteed mushrooms and artichoke hearts and black olives and tiny pearl tomatoes and the remains of a roast beef from a couple of days ago, and some cheese grated in, and scallions and basil. Then we looked through her Chinese apothecary's chest at all her treasures, some of which i remember from 11th grade.

And finally, we set to work. Nothing really earthshaking, but a few good phrases from both of us... doesn't matter. I'm willing to sit down with a pen and write absolute crap, day after day, on the off chance that something magical may come while I'm sitting there, moving my hand. Suit up and show up. All you can do is all you can do.

Tonight is The Family's belated seder at Tami's house. My brother and his brood will not be there - well, maybe his youngest boy and girl. Rikki's daughter will not be there. Otherwise, it's the whole tribe, gathering for the first Passover without my parents - who feared all this family stuff would cease with their demise. L'chaim!

Passover is such an interesting "holiday"... the Jews fled Egypt - which they called "The Narrow Place." I find that so interesting. And the story we tell over and over, each year as Spring springs anew - is of escaping our Narrow Place, bursting from the seed, starting over. We do get another chance at it. We do get to start over. We do know now what we didn't know then...

But they wandered in the desert for 40 years... until all who had been slaves had died. Until the memory and the habit and the mindset of bondage were erased. And only then did they settle in a new land, making a new start, free. A new start is only possible when the Past is really swept away.

I had a perfectly horrible night, fraught with a stupid recurring dream.

I don't know why these things happen, but last night's dream...which always continued after being put on hold as I would awaken and reposition myself on the bed, pull up the covers, get up for a head call or a cup of water...was about a series of recordings by various individuals, all of whom were "known" to me, but all of whom are "deceased"...and all of whom recorded tapes about a project called "Syriana."

I have NOT seen the movie.  I have no awareness of having been bombarded with "Syriana" waves or anything...and in the dream, I was in a room where the recordings were being played, each being transcribed carefully so as to suss out any clues about the mystery of this "Syriana."

Since I don't know squat about the film, there is no correlation between what it's about and what the dream concerned itself with, but I'm guessing my subconscious has been turning that word over and over and devised a little dream for me to ruin a night with.

I detest this portentous announcer on NBC who makes such pronouncements in a foreboding voice such as "This week, an episode of WILL & GRACE to cherish."  Oh, puhleeze!

Today he's rambling on about Monday's MEDIUM, and he finishes with "an evil medium."  All I can think of is, thank God it's not a happy medium; we'd have to strike it.

Today he's rambling on about Monday's MEDIUM, and he finishes with "an evil medium."  All I can think of is, thank God it's not a happy medium; we'd have to strike it.

That...or we could just bitch-slap it silly!

Well, my work for the day is essentially finished, although I may proceed to Act Two's Critical Notes.

NBC has really lost it..

Hi, Penny! Even though you are not here at the moment. That's the way the board works. Sometimes a name will stay signed in at the top even when that person has gone.

I got two wonderful CDs this afternoon.

Piano at the Paramount with Peter Mintun on Piano and Mim Roseveare at the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ.

and

Peter Mintun plays Deep Purple and other Piano Solos from the 1920s and 1930s.

The first CD has a booklet with nice liner notes. What makes them even nicer is former DR Music Guy (AKA Lyn Larsen) wrote a portion of the notes! Lyn and Peter are good friends and were both friends of Jim Roseveare (JR passed away in 1988). We met Peter Mintun in 2003 when Lyn and Kerry came to New York. I love Peter's work on the piano. It's very hard to find his older CDs (Paramount is from 1997 and Deep Purple is from 1981!) We now have all 4 of Mr. Mintun's CDs. Now I just have to find the LPs because there are some tracks on vinyl that didn't make it to CD.

Oh, Power Point!!! I just finished re-working a PP presentation that I have to make in two weeks. Sometimes it's easy and sometimes it's so not worth the hassle. And that's not even dealing with making sure the computer in the conference room is configured correctly with the overhead projecter so it will display your slides, AND making sure some other user of the public laptop in the conference room hasn't decided to "LOCK" the laptop so no one else can use it.

The Office! Someone should make a sitcom about it...what? Oh, never mind (an Emily Litella reference)  ;)

Dan TM - I LOVE Black Narcissus.

RE Slings and Arrows. Must catch it. Have no idea when it's on. I saw one episode a while back and liked it a lot. Mind you, I think I lived Slings and Arrows. Back in my acting days I did a season with the Stratford Children's Theater. One of the stranger times in my life. And I've had a strange life.

Last night I went to a screening where I ran into people I hadn't seen in years. Wonderful to reconnect.

Media check:
CD - Strouse, Schwartz and Schwartz - I've listened to the Andrea Martin cut at least ten times in the car.
DVD- The Children are Watching Us (DeSica)

DD has just informed me that their trip to Belgium has been cancelled. Instead she's going to... Istanbul! My child's life has become a Crosby-Hope movie.

Instead, I went on to the last two episodes of ANGEL's third season. How dismal they left fans at the end of the season! Angel betrayed by his son into a watery grave, Cordelia ascending into a higher realm and broken up with Gru, Wesley at odds with Angel Investigation and sleeping with the enemy. If I had been watching the show then (I didn't come on board until the fourth season), I would have been utterly devastated by these turns of events at the end of the season.

Then I put in Mae West's I'M NO ANGEL. This transfer looks simply amazing for a 1933 film. Knowing that Universal didn't sink nearly the money into mastering this for DVD that Warners put into bringing KING KONG to DVD, for example, it's just astonishing how wonderful it looks and with no real damage to the image that I could tell. Really first rate.

Craig (the son in Romania) works until 9:00 at night and doesn’t get home until at least 10:00, so naturally he doesn’t feel like cooking then.  Today and tomorrow he has off, so while he was cooking tonight I was on Messenger with his girlfriend.  The non-Jewish girlfriend who has never been exposed to Jews before Craig (not that he religious).

I thought it was cute when I asked what he was making besides soup and she asked HOW I knew he was making soup-“it is Passover”.

Then I mentioned she should tell Craig to have a Seder.  She asked me if that was a drink.  While laughing my head off I wrote back to tell Craig what she just asked me.

Here's a post:  a bunch of us at work and some other people I know are going to buy tickets for the tour of Wicked that's coming to Seattle.  We needed at least 20 people to purchase a group of tickets (individual tickets don't go on sale for a couple more months), and we've gotten 34 tickets sold!  Only three haven't actually paid, so far.  My friend Margo and I were going to call today to actually buy the tickets (she's using her credit card that gets frequent flyer miles) but the place that handles the group purchases is closed for the holiday!  We'll have to try again on Monday.

I'm just back from work and feeling exhausted from the week.  What do I see when I walk into my building but a notice saying we have the opportunity to buy our apartments, and contact the realtor if we are interested.  A copy of the flier wan in an envelope under our door as well.  I have no idea how this might impact our lease but I am not going to worry about it now.  These apartments are by no means prime real estate and I am sure that we are safe at the very least through the end of the year when our lease is up.  By that point I may be working a ways away from here and looking to move, so no need to panic.

George - I'm pretty sure that the touring company of WICKED that you'll be seeing in Seattle is the same company and scenic design that I saw in Philly last week.  If so, not that you were worried about it, the show doesn't take a back seat in any way to what's playing in New York.  You're going to have  a great time, and even seeing a physical produciton that somehow manages to be more effective than the Broadway set.  Really something to loook forward to.

Enjoyed SOME of the things I viewed tonight. Started off with a MURDER SHE WROTE rerun. This was the first one where Jessica moved to New York City to assume a teaching position and, of course, there is a murder in the parking garage of her apartment building. Among the guest stars were Eugene Roche, Rosemary Forsyth, and John Considine. I remember seeing this episode the first time and being astounded at the identity of the murderer. Looking at it again tonight, the clues were not as adroitly placed as in previous seasons of the show. This may have been when the majority of the episodes of the show were not the scrupulously fair mysteries of the first five or six seasons.

I watched the last half of I'M NO ANGEL. There are some sound problems later in the film; a complete dropout for a couple of seconds and some really tinny sound at the start of the trial sequence. Saw one noticeable bit of garbage on the left side of the frame, but it still looked grand for 99% of the picture.

I'm afraid CONVICTION is getting more shrill and melodramatic with each new episode. This was the "episode of pessimism" where each of the lawyers was handling a negative, depressing development either in his personal or professional life. By the end, the pile a negativity was stacked pretty high and made for an uncomfortable, unfulfilling hour.

On Tuesday night in the SVU timeslot, the show did about half of the audience that a new episode of SVU typically draws. If tonight's show doesn't show some kind of uptick in ratings from the downtrend of the last few Fridays, I will not expect NBC to renew it despite having a LOT of holes to fill in its schedule next season.

I saw the Philly engagement of Wicked.  I was appalled to find that FOUR leads were out (Elphaba, Glinda, Fiyero and Dr. Dillamond).  I travelled two hours and paid a great deal of money simply to see Julia Murney sing the hell out of the show (not one of my favorites).  It struck me as so odd that no one could be bothered to show up for that particular performance.

And if so, did you notice that the list of understudies was partially hidden by the large cast list?

DRGeorge, did you listen to ASSASSINS today in honor of Lincoln?

When you finish listening to ASSASSINS tonight, you should wath the first half of TITANIC, but then save the bottom half of the movie for tomorrow morning.

I'd love to see Julia Murney (I have her on a couple of recordings) but as far as I know, NOBODY that I'm going with has even heard of her.  We're all going to see the show, not specifically any particular performer. :)

Thank goodness she was. Otherwise, the show wouldn't have run for twelve years.

No one wants a refund
No one cares the star's not on
No one knows that Elphie is the lead

New Yorkers beg for refunds
Travelled on an Amtrak train
Got to Philly feeling very tee'd  (is that a word?)

Iowa City really got hit bad by tornados last night.  I lived there for 5 years during college so it was sad to see the photos of the destruction.  We're supposed to be in the tornado bullseye tomorrow night. Hopefully we'll get rain and that's it!

I send safe weather vibes to you Cilla

Hi, All - Just popped in for a minute to check on y'all and tell you that I'm going to disconnect my computer.  We have both severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado warnings and  :o I'm home alone!  Thunder is beginning and I just saw a huge flash of lightening.

See you when it's over!

"Ben and Me" - The Musical.  Starring Anthony Morelli.

That will soon replace TARZAN, because of technical problems, and will use miniature sets, created by the star, so that everyone can have a good view of the stage! ;)

... and its sister show ME & MY GIRL?

The two combined will play Paris as

MENAGE A TROIS.

If they can also cast Brad Pitt it'll become

MENAGE A TROY.

Back from a lovelier than lovely dinner with Julieanne Pogue and Hisaka.  We laughed and laughed and just when we thought we could laugh no more, we laughed again.  Hisaka was a bit befuddled by it all, but I think she had fun.

Here is actual photographic evidence of tonight's dinner.  I am taking the photgraphic evidence, hence am not in the shot.  Here is Julieanne Pogue and Hisaka - Julieanne has our very own Pogue on the phone, as we were giving him a play by play.
