Off to work.

Yes, MR BK photos from the Courts show would be wonderful!  And Miss Cecily is in the nun's chorus of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, and she received her wonderful signed CD last year from Mr Tony Walton and was very pleased and appreciative.  I hadn't seen her to ask her about it until last week.  Thank you for helping make someone very happy!

Good morning, all!  I got out of bed at 6:30, decided I was feeling poorly, and went back to bed for another hour and a half!  The rains hae come and the temperature has dropped and my body is not at all happy about it.  So, no jaunt to Toyland today, and I will play with Cinderella here at home.  IK have timelines to do for cast changes and musical changes in[/i]THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER.  Second-rate Victor Herbert is better than a lot of first-rate crap today, but the score, to me, has none of the inspiration of BABES IN TOYLAND.

DR George, I love Ms Lupone, and I think it would be fun to visit with her, but the other two ladies would be tortuous.  One of them is certifiably insane.

I would like to spend more time with Rosemary Harris, whom I got to know during sessions for THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER, in which she plays the Fairy Godmother.  She's one neat lady.

Quick Saturday morning greetings!  I have to be "on stage" soon for the April edition of Grantseeking Basics, but I wanted to stop in and say:

Happiest of Birthdays to DR Sandra!

In you honor, I will try to find a Cherry Coke to drink today.

And belated birthday greetings to DR Jane's DH Keith!

Bye for now.

"DUMB" ANIMALS

When I was housebreaking Angie, I would clean up her mess with a paper-towel and then take her, and the towel, out to the yard to show her where it (the mess) belonged.

Last night someone peed on the hall floor. I got down on my hands and knees and mopped the puddle with a small white towel. Angie watched me, then she grabbed the towel from my hand, dashed out the doggie door, dropped the wet towel in the yard and came back in!

She also loves going out in the rain - so you get the fun of 30 pounds of dripping wet puppy jumping into your lap!

Next time - sea monkies!

And the next day, have lunch with the Big Two (Bette Midler) and just stare at them!

Me - I think I'd aim for a different triple-treat: Angela Lansbury (film, stage, TV) - and just try to keep her talking.

This used to be the stuff some films were made of:

Quote
Say What: Naked carpenter offending clients
Press-Telegram wire reports
Long Beach Press Telegram

OAKLAND — Most carpenters work in coveralls or at least pants and a shirt. Police say Percy Honniball prefers to do his work in his birthday suit.
"It's more comfortable," said Honniball in a phone interview Thursday. "The primary reason is so I (won't) dirty my clothes and have to get into my truck with dusty clothes on."

But not everyone is tolerant of nude carpenters. A homeowner called police when he arrived home early and found the worker buck naked.

"He got upset and he said 'You have to leave,"' Honniball said of the incident.

Oakland Police Officer Jesse Grant said when asked by the homeowner what was going on, Honniball "didn't address the fact that he was naked, only that he was sorry that he was behind in the work" building bookcases.

Honniball had been caught working in the buff three times before in Berkeley.

Honniball said Thursday he doesn't plan to work naked again.

Good morning!

I was awakened this morning by torrential rains, or I might have slept the eight hours I was hoping for. I only missed it by 20 minutes.

It has rained all morning in alternately light and heavy doses, the heaviest rain we've had in months. SUpposed to continue well into the afternoon. Ah, well, a day inside is just fine with me.

The problem with the Honnibal story is that no mention is made of what the guy looks like.

I mean, sure, he could look like Chris Meloni, but then he could also look like Rick Moranis.  Or Stubby Kaye, instead of Peter Palmer.

Another thought: Does he also do plumbing?  Or would that be redundant?
Title: Re:THE MENTORING ME

Angela Lansbury would certainly have been my first choice as a dinner companion. I'd love to pick her brain about her MGM years, her scramble for roles after her MGM contract expired, the Broadway triumphs and flops, and, of course, her TV career with MURDER SHE WROTE and afterward.

As far as an actor to have a dinner with, that's a trickier proposition. Ian McKellen might be fun. He's had a varied career of stage and screen. Might also like Kenneth Branagh or Derek Jacobi who have mixed, stage, screen, and television.

American actors? Well, Paul Newman perhaps since he's worked with so many wonderful directors and had such a long career.

I'm sorry I missed wishing DR Jane's DH Keith a very happy birthday on his special day.  I hope belated good wishes will do!

Happy Birthday to DR Sandra!  I shall also attempt to honor you with a Cherry Coke when I go out grocery shopping this afternoon.

Thank you all for the vibes for my Mother and myself.

I dont want this to come across sounding mean but having already been through one Hospice horror experence in our life neither my Mom or myself wish to have anything to do with those most "helpful  ::)" people.

HMMMM TOD:

for actors Derek Jacobi, Johnny Depp, Kenneth Bragnah and John Cusak all immediately come to mind for actresses it would have been katherine Hepburn were she still with us, but as she is not Dame Judi Dench, Dame Julie Andrews,  Meryl Streep and Angela Lansbury are the first ones that come to mind.

They would of course all be individual dinners, one of one not grpup deals  and I couldn;t care less where  it was or whether there was food as I would just like to sit and listen and let them talk for hours about how they approach roles and create characters and all those wonderful ancedotes they must all have to tell!!

Good voice/singing vibes to the Vixter! Don't worry about your voice, kiddo. Just think of keeping your breath even - then your singing will sound smooth and you will have control of your phrases. Singing isn't really about being "In-Voice" or not "In-Voice" - it is being Present with the music, and being committed to the lyrics. Exhale with purpose and intention, and believe what you are saying - you can't miss!

      ****HAPPY FLOOPY BIRTHDAY, DR SANDRA!****

And happy belated birthday to Mr. Nick Redman.

Last night I saw (on DVD) a film that won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 1986 - SMOOTH TALK - based on a short story ("Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been") by Joyce Carol Oates, adapted by Tom Cole and the director, Joyce Chopra. I then read a really interesting essay by Ms. Oates on her thoughts about the adaptation of her story. The movie starred an 18-year-old Laura Dern. My God! She was a breathtakingly beautiful teenager! I found the film really disturbing and quite riveting.

TOD - A general thought - everyone is saying that they'd like to listen to X (fill in the names) - But don't you think they'd like to hear you talk, too? One thing that I've found with the majority of great artists that I've had the good fortune to meet (not all - some are just ego surrounded by bone and flesh - but not too many) - is that one of the things that makes them great is the curiosity they have about life in general and other people in particular. I think they would be eager to hear about your lives, too. I'm sure they'd enjoy a conversation much more than a recitation of their  career achievements. End of mild rant.

Well, I must be off.  I have a busy day ahead of me.  First, I have to go to my sister's house (just next door) and help her move furniture.  Today, my niece (who turned 22 this past Monday) is having her official both-sides-of-the-family (who all still get along, even 18 years after the divorce) birthday party.  My sister wants to make her house more conducive to sitting and chatting and eating.

After the furniture moving, I need to shower and then go to work for a few hours.  Then, I have to be back at my sister's house in time for the festivities at four.  But I can't stay very long.  I'm ushering for a touring production of The Mikado (http://washingtoncenter.org/season/season_detail.asp?event_id=717) by the Carl Rosa Opera Company (http://www.carlrosaopera.co.uk/index.asp) (Britain's Oldest opera company).  I've never seen a "real" production of it, only a high school version and a kid's summer theater production of "The Mikado Goes West," sort of like a Das Barbecü version.  I'm real excited about this!

Have a good day, all!! ;D

Vibes for the VIXTER.

DR VIXMOM - I had lunch with Ms Meryl Streep once.  Soon after she won her first Oscar - she and her husband and her in-laws were eating lunch at Gray's Cafeteria in Mooresville (I think her in laws live in Indy) and she wheeled her daughter by in one of those high chairs on wheels....her husband was carrying her tray and his own.

There wasn't much buzz about her there - her not being Reba McIntire or Loretta Lynn or Lynn Anderson....but I did nod to her and she smiled back....she also almost tipped over the high chair but by the time I was out of my chair to help her, she had righted it and was on her way.....uneven brick floor, you know.

Gins! How was the workshop??

DR PennyO - thanks for asking.  I've done 3 "performances" this week:

Wednesday - guest lectured on prospect research to a fundraising and grantwriting class at Wright State University

Thursday - did the Grantseeking Basics for Individuals in the Arts workshop.  This one was especially stressful, because it's new to my repertoire.  The group was quite small - the arts consortium didn't do a very good marketing job - but the dozen people who were there were quite interesting and, yes, appreciative.

Today - the Grantseeking Basics (geared to nonprofit organizations) workshop that I do once a month and could probably do in my sleep.  Today's group was very tuned in and included 2 students who had been in the Wednesday class.  They all asked great questions, which often led directly to the next thing I was going to talk about - I love when that happens!

I also wanted to chime in on the punctuation question that DR Vixmom asked yesterday and that DR derBrucer answered exactly as I would have:

If something is a whole work (book, periodical, play, etc.) - italicize or underline; if it's a part of a whole (chapter in a book, article in a periodical, song in a musical, etc.), put in quotes.

In a past life, I taught the ins and outs of the various bibliographic styles - APA, MLA, Turabian, etc. - and truly enjoyed it.  Call me a geek.

Quote:
Say What: Naked carpenter offending clients
Press-Telegram wire reports

I would have answered the same way. Funny, when you work at circulation and after reference leaves, you get the most interesting questions. I have often been asked questions about formatting also..

Finally to the topic of the day.....

Who do I want to have dinner with...

I suspect many of you would also love to have dinner or lunch with Bk!! The man has had an interesting life and has perhaps much insight and witticism to share....

Actors??? Hmm, this is a tough one.... There are SO many...

Matthew Ashford and Melissa Reeves.... They both seem down to earth and nice individuals... (discuss anything BUT the present state of days)

Pierce Brosnan... Angela Lansbury (I adore her for she is incredibly talented), William Macy, Liam Neeson and Colin Firth....

One of my students workers actually had tea once with Pierce Brosnan.

The first name that came to mind was Angela Lansbury and I would probably pick Joe Allen's to dine.  Apparently it would be a crowded lunch or dinner, because several other dear readers included her.  And we would speak of cabbages and kings.... of bedknobs and broomsticks........ of Potts and Lovetts.... and Fletchers and Iselins, too.

My second choice would be the WSMA, Brent Barrett, the dinner would be in my hotel suite, and the conversation would be nobody's business but ours.

Study: Man Survives Nail-Gun Shooting of 12 Nails to the Head (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,192681,00.html)

Quote
Friday , April 21, 2006
PORTLAND, Ore. — An Oregon man who went to a hospital complaining of a headache was found to have 12 nails embedded in his skull from a suicide attempt with a nail gun, doctors say.

Surgeons removed the nails with needle-nosed pliers and a drill, and the man survived with no serious lasting effects, according to a report on the medical oddity in the current issue of the Journal of Neurosurgery.

The unidentified 33-year-old man was suicidal and high on methamphetamine last year when he fired the nails — up to 2 inches in length — into his head one by one.

The nails were not visible when doctors first examined the man in the emergency room of an unidentified Oregon hospital a day later. Doctors were surprised when X-rays revealed six nails clustered between his right eye and ear, two below his right ear and four on the left side of his head.

Can someone explain how of "six nails clustered between his right eye and ear" , four end up on the left side of his head.

Began my afternoon with Mae West's GOIN' TO TOWN. This is her one Paramount film I had never seen (I've never seen her COlumbia film THE HEAT'S ON either), and it was an OK follow-up to I'M NO ANGEL, but it's obvious the censors were keeping her in line by 1935.

But the print used for this transfer was not in great shape. There's a fair amount of speckling, some hairline scratches, and some truly shocking print damage during the first race track scene. This was the best print Universal could come up with? A disappointment.

In honor of Angie:

Different Worlds (Theme from the TV show "Angie")

Chorus:

Let the time flow
Let the love grow
Let the rain shower
Let the rose flower
Love it seeks and love it finds
Love it conquers, love it binds

We come to each other from different worlds
Drawn to each other by the love inside of us
We give to each other our different worlds
Long as we can do it
Life is gonna breeze right through it

(Chorus)

We reach for each other from different worlds
With love for each other that will stand the test of time
We're up to the challenge of different worlds
With this love inside us
There is nothing can divide us

(Chorus)

Love it seeks and love it finds
(Love it seeks and love it finds)
Love it conquers, love it binds

Love it seeks and love it finds
Love it conquers, love it binds

Birthday Greetings to our Dear Sandra! Now just get here, girl to see how much we love you  ;D

Kerry dropped by. Hello, Dear Friend (She Loves Me). Hope life is well in Arizona.

I'm about to leave for our friend's 75th Birthday party.

Lunch or Dinner with...

If the person is dead and I could still choose, I would love to have lunch with Mr. Noel Coward on his island and talk about Miss Gertie Lawrence and theatre in NY and London in the 20s and 30s

Alive, hmmm. Judi Dench is high on the list, along with Miss Lansbury (I know both of their calendars are busy with other DRs).

Harold Prince and or Stephen Sondheim (separate meals so I could do both) are also on the list. Lunch w/Sondheim at his townhouse on 49th Street. Dinner with Prince at any place of his choosing.

There are so many, it's hard to choose just one or two.

Off to party.

TPunk and Rod, I'm so glad you enjoyed Drowsy Chaperone  :)

I won't be able to see Lestat until after it opens. This week comin up is a busy one and I know it opens on Tuesday. They are doing good business so it may not matter what the reviews think. A friend of mine who knows someone in the cast said that they don't need to do any papering. The show is on TKTS but otherwise the business is solid and strong.

Later, gaters.

Before I go, Larry, do you know anything about a song called "The Torpedo and the Whale" The composer's last name is Audran and it's done by the Columbia Stellar Quartette in 1918. Anthony has found a couple of wonderful sites full of old cylinder and 78 recordings and he came across this song. We haven't done much research yet but he thought you might know something. It sounds like a theatre song.

Ant is planning on making a 10-12 disc set of these old recordings he found. I think you might like to hear some of them. He has a couple of tracks from The Lady of the Slipper. You probably know of them. I dion't know which ones they are but he can tell you when he comes over to Toyland for a visit.

A thoughtful extract from one of Andrew Sullivan's guest bloggers:

Quote
Alone Together
22 Apr 2006 02:35 pm

Eating dinner at a bar the other night, I sat next to a sales rep for a company that produces portable home dialysis units. He was drinking pretty hard, celebrating a deal that he'd just closed and telling me how soaring diabetes rates were going to create ever greater demand for his revolutionary product. I thought he was going to propose a toast to kidney failure.

But what bothered me most about our conversation was the streamlined plastic phone device implanted in his right ear and connected via Bluetooth to the Palm Treo lying on the bar in front of him. Every minute or two the earjack would light up, suddenly pulsing white and blue, and I'd forget whatever I was saying to him or whatever he was saying to me. Finally, I asked him what the light was. "That just means the thing's turned on," he said. As he said this, he was looking at his Treo screen, which he did about every thirty or forty seconds. His face changed -- had some important message arrived? Still speaking to me, but without much focus now, he tapped out a line or two of text with his amazingly prehensile thumbs. He'd left the scene, I sensed; he was somewhere else. At headquarters, perhaps. And I'd been placed on hold.

I didn't like it. I never like it. And it happens constantly. I'll be in the middle of what I take to be a sincere human interaction with somebody and they'll start cutting in and out -- checking the Blackberry, texting on the cell phone, stylus-ing the electronic calendar. No apologies, either. No 'excuse mes.' As though a mixture of physical proximity and electronic separation is the accepted new mode of social togetherness. I swear I've seen couples out on dates who speak to each other only when the menu comes, to negotiate their appetizers, and then drift off into conversations with others until the check arrives.

And yet they call it "communications technology."

When the dialysis salesman returned to earth, I committed a faux pas by asking him what he'd just been writing about. I thought I was entitled to ask this question because he'd been conducting his business in front of me. I found out otherwise. He glared at me. What kind of spying busybody was I? The warmth between us never returned and we ate our salads in different universes, staring at the TV behind the bar. The light in his earjack pulsed. I paid my tab. When I left, I mumbled a goodbye, but the salesman didn't acknowledge it. He was tapping on his keys.

T.O.D.

My second choice would be the WSMA, Brent Barrett, the dinner would be in my hotel suite, and the conversation would be nobody's business but ours.

I am not sure that "Would you like to change into something a bit more comfortable, Mr. Barrett" would be considered a conversation, TCB.

The Torpedo and the Whale
From Olivette
Music by Edmond Audran

I.

In the North sea lived a whale.
In the North sea lived a whale.
In the North sea lived a whale,
Big in bone and huge in tail,
Big in bone and huge in tail,
Oh! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

This whale used unduly to swagger and bully.
And oh! The ladies loved him so!
This whale used unduly to swagger and bully!
And oh! The ladies loved him so!
This whale used unduly to swagger and bully.
And oh! And oh! The ladies loved him so!

II.

All went well until one day.
All went well until one day.
All went well until one day.
Came a strange fish in the bay.
Came a strange fish in the bay.
Oh! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The fish was indeed oh!
A Woolwich torpedo. But oh! But oh!
The big whale did not know
This fish was indeed oh!
A Woolwich torpdeo. But oh! But oh!
The big whale did not know!
The Fish was indeed oh!
A Woolwich torpedo but oh! But oh!
The big whale did not know!
III.

"Just you make tracks," cried the whale.
"Just you make tracks," cried the whale.
"Just you make tracks," cried the whale.
Then he lashed out with his tail.
Then he lashed out with his tail.
Oh! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The fish being loaded,
Then and there exploded, and oh! and oh!
The whale was no mo'!
The fish being loaded,
Then and there exploded. And oh! and oh!
The whale was no mo'!

Let me see.......

A woman walks into the Welfare Office to apply for assistance.  The worker sits down with the woman and reviews the application with her.

"Now ma'am, you wrote down that you have four children, but you didn't list their names or ages."

"Oh, let me see. My oldest boy is eight years old and his name is Sandy.  The next oldest is my daughter Sandy, who is six."

"Just a moment", says the worker, "your two oldest children are both named Sandy?"

"That's right," says the woman.  "Now, my next child is my other daughter Sandy, who is four years old."  "And then there is the baby, Sandy, who is six months."

Now the worker is a little taken back by this, and says to the woman, "Are you trying to tell me, that all four of your children are named Sandy?"

"Correct," says the woman.  "I have always liked the name, Sandy."

"Doesn't that get confusing?" asks the worker.

"Not at all," says the woman.  "When it is time for dinner, I just yell, 'Sandy' and they all come runnin'."  If they get in trouble, I just yell, 'Sandy, you are in trouble,' and they all know I mean them."

"But, what happens if you only want to call one of them," asks the worker.

"Oh, that's easy.  Then I just call them by their last names."

DR Ben, it's most likely Edmund Audran, composer of a French operetta hit "La Mascotte" from around 1880.  I don't know the song, which is from his operetta "Olivette."

I'm back from a loooong day.   ASCAP was short and sweet as they had a lot of no shows, not just for me, but for all the mentors.  I had fun, though, and I think I gave some good info.

The Ray Courts show seemed busy, but it was dullsville as far as I was concerned.  I did have fun with Cindy W. and said hey to Candy Clark and Lynne Stewart, who were also at the Graffitti tables.  Lesley Anne Warren was there, looking pretty good, I said hey to Allyce Beasley and a few others.  Nick and daughter were there and we lunched at the Daily Grill.  I forgot to bring my camera, so no pix unfortunately.  And I met the delightful Carla Laemmle.  I got stopped and was asked for my autograph and while I was signing his autograph book he told me he reads this here site every single day.  What do you think about THAT?  I really do feel that soon we will be the most popular site on all the Internet.  Not sure what movie I'll watch tonight - too many to choose from, which drives me batty.

The East coast HBO broadcast of ELIZABETH I Part 1 lasted 1:47, and just ended.  If you West Coasters don't have HBO, run to a neighbor's and confiscate their viewing.  Helen Mirren is amazing, and Jeremy Irons wonderful and still quite handsome as the love of her life, whose letters she kept until she died.  Then, if you still want to know more about an amazing woman, buy a paerback copy of Alison Weir's bio of Elizabeth, which is one of the best biographies I've ever read.

I cannot wait for part two!

Want to share this with those interested in all things "SONG OF THE SOUTH"!
This info is from Jim Hill at Jimhillmedia.com and is dated April 21!

Well, if you have to own a physical copy of "Song of the South," then -- yes -- I'd suggest that you go ahead with purchasing one of those illegal dubs of the Japanese "SOTS" laser disc.

On the other hand, if you can wait a few years ... Well, I've been hearing that the Mouse is now planning on making "Song of the South" -- along with many other rare Disney movies, shorts & TV shows -- available for viewing via the Net. For a price, of course.

As I understand it, the Walt Disney Company (in the not-so-distant future) reportedly plans on setting up a heavily encrypted web site where Disneyana fans & film buffs will then find a wide variety of extremely appealing content. We're talking about the same sort of stuff that used to air as part of the Disney Channel 's old "Vault Disney" programming block. 50-year-old episodes of the "Disneyland" TV show, "True-Life Adventures" films. There's even been talk that this site would be a showcase for all of those old Oswald the Lucky Rabbit shorts that the company recently acquired.

And among the many films that would be available for viewing on this Disney-owned web site will be "Song of the South." Now please note that I used the word "viewing," rather than "downloading." The whole point of heavily encrypting this site is that Disneyana fans will not be able to record any of the movies, shorts or TV shows that they're viewing. More to the point, every time that you want to see one of the programs that are on file at this web site, you're going to have to pay for the privilege.

The beauty of this plan is ... Disney gets to eat its cake and have it too. The studio gets to take all of these old titles that it currently has in its film library -- movies like "Song of the South," which haven't generated any real income for the company in years -- and turn them back into earners. But -- at the same time -- Disney gets to keep "SOTS" away from easily-offended types. You know, those thin-skinned consumers who would scream bloody murder were they to ever spy this allegedly racist motion picture for sale at their local Walmart

Oops! Sorry! There's some more left of the Jim Hill comment so..... here's Johnny!

No!

Here it is!

"The downside of this plan is ... Well, given that Disney is only now getting ready to launch the two month trial of its new download-ABC-programs-for-free web site (You know, the one that will allow you to view full episodes of "Lost" & "Desperate Housewives" -- complete with commercials -- on your home PC?) ... Well, it will likely be a couple of years before the company is actually ready to launch the Net version of "Vault Disney."

So -- when you factor all that in -- we're probably talking 2010, 2011 before this actually happens. Which would be just in time for "Song of the South" 's 65th anniversary.

So as I said earlier ... If you can just wait a few years, chances are that you'll finally have access to "Song of the South" as well as a slew of other Disney rareties. Here's hoping that the price that we have to pay for access to this "Vault Disney" web site isn't all that expensive."

Have had a full evening of video entertainment, some wonderful and some not so.

Began with the laserdisc of ATHENA. Of course, I know DR M Barnum would forgive it anything due to its display of muscle hunks popping up at regular junctures. Steve Reeves, of course, was something to behold, and he and Richard Sabre are beefy eyefuls.

But if the laserdisc transfer is any indication of what ATHENA looked like in theaters, it could not be more lackluster. The Eastmancolor is rather dull and it has only mono sound, adequate for the less than inspiring Hugh Martin/Ralph Blane tunes.

I haven't seen ATHENA since I first bought this laserdisc in the mid-1990s, and it'll probably be another 10 years before I watch it again.

Next came the documentary PARAGRAPGH 175 on one of the HBO channels. I only saw the first 50 minutes of it since it extended past the starting time of ELIZABETH I, so I've set the DVR to catch the next broadcast which will be recorded so I can watch the whole thing.

For those not in the know, the film concerns personal stories of German homosexuals persecuted during the Nazi regime, produced and directed for those responsible for STORIES OF THE QUILT and THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK. I look forward to seeing this entire film. I have managed to miss it every time it has been shown, and finally I should be able to see the entire thing within the next few days.

JRand- I not only got you an autographed book, I got you mary Badham's email and phone numbers so you can contact her in case you would like her to appear at your production. Don't know what she charges, but she does go to a lot of schools and does presentations on the issues in Mockingbird. So, it could be an opportunity to bring the schools into a project with the theatre. Just a thought.

ELIZABETH I was quite a treat. I've always found the woman a fascinating subject, and every film and series in which she has appeared has always been rather better due to her presence.

I think Glenda Jackson's performance will always be my favorite; she got the joy of covering her from her teens through her death, a monumental achievement.

But Helen Mirren certainly plays it for all its worth. Picking up Elizabeth in her middle age period (which corresponds to Jackson's third episode of ELIZABETH R - "Shadow in the Sun"), it's a grand spectacle and yet also quite an intimate character study of the queen and her court. Jeremy Irons is perfect casting for Leister. and I liked all of the casting of the men in her court as well.

Because it's HBO, there is far more graphic violence on display than in ELIZABETH R, and, of course, much more reliance on location shooting rather than studio bound sets. But it's stupendously majestic and worthy of such a queen.

Yes, bring on Part II quickly! (Argh! We have to wait until Monday evening).

I completed my evening's viewing with the first hour of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA on DVD. I'll tell you why I picked it up.

I spent a good portion of the morning reading reviews of people who have been watching the new HD-DVD players and films which debuted this week. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is one of the films which was in the first wave of HD-DVD releases.

And for those who are curious, the reports have been mixed. Sterling picture and sound, of course, but every review I've read has made a point of saying that the detailed and pristine images aren't the MAJOR upgrade to DVD that going from VHS to DVD was. Thus, on most high definition equipment, folks aren't going to see a tremendous difference in quality. A difference, yes, but a difference worth several hundred dollars expense of upgrading DVD players and potentially receivers to enjoy the upgrade? Probably not for the average consumer.

I have a question for all you book/movie people.  They are taking suggestions for next year's One Book One Siouxland. They want a book that has been made into a movie, suitable for Jr High age and older, and that we could bring in someone associated with the book or movie.

A lot of people came to the movie because Mary Badham was here, so we want to be able to bring in someone next year.

They are tossing around Catch-22 and In Cold Blood - not sure if there is anyone to bring in on those, though.  Anyone have ideas?

She said that they put on the play every year in Monroeville, AL and every year she appears at the final performance, so it wouldn't be crazy. I didn't ask for her contact info, btw, she offered it.

She had some great stories. She retired from acting at age 14, lol. She never wanted to be an actress, she wanted to be a large animal vet. Anyway, her mother was into acting and wanted her to go to the cattle call and her father (who was 60 years old when she was born) was totally against it.  Her mother said "Oh come on, what are the chances she'd get cast anyway"

Well, no sooner do I post that about reviewers saying there wasn't a tremendous quality difference between standard DVD and HD-DVD than I read Robert Harris' comments at the HTF. He is on the other side of the fence claiming four times the detail and resolution from DVD to HD-DVD. He overwhelmingly endorses it, the first such blanket endoresement I've read.

Hello.  Thanks all for the Vix Voice Vibes... she thinks she did pretty well although she said that at one point she felt like she had to cough and "kind of swallowed" a note and the adjudicator mentioned it afterwards so she is sure she lost a point  there.

I am afraid I didn't get as much housework done as I wanted to because that  blankety blank  headache would not go away. I finally had to lie down in a dark room and fell asleep for a few hours.  Of course now everyione else has gone to bed and I'm wide awake.  But thank goodness the headache is gone!!

I attended a powwow tonight that the three colleges in the FArgo-Moorhead area put on. It was pretty good and has grown considerably in the last few years. There were a number of vendors there also and I bought some natural teas and some beadwork. There were some incredibly talented artisans at the show.

The dancers were excellent it is nice to see the youngsters learning the different dances. There was little girl that was no more than 4 or 5 and she held her own with the bigger girls in the Jingle dance.
