And the word of the day is: VOMITORIUM!

Vomitorium (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/vomitorium):  noun:  an opening through which something is ejected or discharged; in a theater or stadium, esp. ancient, a passageway leading to and from the seating.

Or check out Wikipedia's entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vomitorium#Vomitorium).

6:11 am and I'm the only one in the jernt.

Oatmeal, coffee and some Trader Joe's Apple Grape juice. Yummm!

Michael B, if you have trouble getting used to the touch pad (I dislike them) you can get a USB mouse which will plug into an available USB port and relieve you of the aggrivation of touch pads. Many of them are small and they fit easily into a laptop case.

It's raining and it's in the 40s! Where is Spring???

As for the Topic of the Day...

I'd have to say Southern Indian Vegetarian cuisine is a good place to start.  Get one of the dosas which is basically a big rice flour pancake/crepe rolled around a base filling of potatoes and onions.  That's the basic.  Then there are various other fillings with vegetables you can branch out too.

Otherwise, Tandoor Chicken or Lamb is also a safe bet.  Basically the meat is marinated and then "baked" in a very hot over, a tandoor.  Served with rice on the side, and some other condiments.  It basically looks like a Chicken - or a Lamb - kebab/kebob/kabob.

Good morning, all!  It's quite gray out.  Have the rains come?

I had a lot of mail and packages to sort through yesterday, including two shipments of garage sale CDs, a duplicate (!) shipment from Amazon, two eBay wins postmarked Feb 22 and Feb 15 that suddenly showed up; my post office is pathetic.  I also took care of my taxes and got all my payments into the post.

This morning, I've a jaunt to Toyland - my first in several days - and then off to the NYPL to work on the Toyland notes again before the scrapbooks crumble forever.

Yes, DR JoseS, you were out of bed before me.  I'm assuming you have to head home now before you go to rehearsal.

DRsingdaw, I saw that CAMELOT production when it first opened at Lincoln Center with a very tired and half-paralyzed Richard Burton and Christine Ebersole, neither of whom were very good.  Burton looked like Richard III doing a musical. Harris replaced Burton during the tour and the wonderful Meg Bussert replaced Ebersole.  She can only be an improvement.

A bientot!

Quote
ARRESTS UP IN ATLANTA AIRPORT RESTROOMS

ATLANTA —  At the world's busiest airport, plainclothes officers patrolling public restrooms in search of luggage thieves have instead uncovered a rash of other, more sordid crimes.

The new restroom dragnet has led to the arrests of more than 30 people in three months for indecent exposure and public sex acts at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
…
Among those arrested is Ed Wall, the board chairman of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority. An officer said he saw Wall having oral sex with another man. Wall, who has temporarily stepped down from his post, has maintained his innocence. A court date has not been set.
...

When asked about the incident, Mr. Wall replied:

"I can't think about that right now. If I do, I'll go crazy. I'll think about that tomorrow."

MILE HIGH CLUB (http://www.cnn.com/2007/TRAVEL/04/10/amr.women.reut/)

Quote
American Airlines seeks more female fliers
CHICAGO, Illinois (Reuters) -- American Airlines, the world's largest airline, says it can boost revenue by $94 million a year by tailoring some of its services to the growing number of women travelers.
The airline, a unit of AMR Corp., this week unveiled a version of its Web site for women (http://www.aa.com/women ). The site aims to increase the number of women booking flights on American by 2 percent or more, said an AMR executive on Tuesday.

The site, as well as changes to American's planes and travel clubs, is the latest effort by a U.S. airline to distinguish itself in a competitive industry that has spent the last five years slashing costs and tweaking services.

"We obviously have a vast interest in women," said Peggy Sterling, AMR vice president of safety, security and environmental. "There is an untapped resource."

I'm sure the ladies will enjoy getting tapped!

I really loved Richard Harris in the movie version of CAMELOT, but he's ham through and through in this stage version (I have it on videotape). And he's got so much eye make-up on that it will make you laugh. None of the other actors impressed me very much, but at least they can sing. Isn't it Richard Muenz as Lancelot in this? I haven't watched it in so long that I've forgotten.

A uqestion to the very knowledgeable stage fanatics at HHW:

Why didn't they make a cast recording of the musical version of GONE WITH THE WIND during its one year London run? With June Ritchie and Harve Presnell in the leads, it would have been glorious to listen to.

And I wonder why some producer doesn't do a studio recording of this Harold Rome score. Most reference books say the score is very good. I've never listened to the original Japanese cast recording (SCARLETT), but an English language recording would surely spark some interest among theater buffs.

I concur with MBARNUM's suggestion of trying an Indian buffet.

Indian food is so different from American food and can take some getting used to. Not all of it is hot, either. I've introduced a number of friends to Indian food and most newbies like one or more of the Indian chicken dishes. My local Indian eatery serves Tandori salmon, cooked in that very-hot oven that Jose mentioned, that is just wonderful.

My Indian food experience was in the early to mid-70s - I was taken to what I was told was a great Indian restaurant somewhere in West LA or Santa Monica.  I was with my cousins, and they ordered, having eaten there many times.  Unfortunately, they ordered everything extra hot.  I took one bite of something and that was the end of the meal.  The taste was terrible, but worse, my mouth was so on fire that twenty glasses of water (and I'm not kidding) could not put it out.  I haven't eaten nor been in an Indian restaurant since.

The CBS and NBC slates tonight at ALL NEW!

UGLY BETTY and GREY'S ANATOMY are clip shows, and I haven't made up my mind about watching them since I've seen every episode (and in the case of GREY'S, multiple times).

Sorry, DR Ron Pulliam, SMALLVILLE is a repeat, and SUPERNATURAL isn't even on.

Well, then.....that leaves only "live" viewing for me tonight...on CBS.

Richard Harris is pretty much always a ham.  His philosophy of acting seems to be:  "I'll will alternately shout, then whisper intently."  Those seem to pretty much be his only two choices.  I thought he was a terrible choice for CAMELOT, but then I didn't think much of Vanessa Redgrave or Franco Nero either.  I recently saw Harris again in CROMWELL on TCM.  Not a good movie but vaguely interesting as history.  But Harris is rather awful, giving his usual honking shouting/intent whispering performance.

And one can never forgive him for recording one of the worst songs in the world, MacArthur Park.  But then, of course, what can one do with some of the worst lyrics in the world...green icing melting and never not having recipes.  Geeze!  What a dumb-ass song!  I've actually heard Vic Damone sing this god-awful mess and even he can't do anything with it, so I guess I shouldn't blame Harris for it.

Harris never really got good until he got older...I quite like him in THE FIELD.

Love Indian food.  Chicken Tandoori, Chicken Marsala, Lamb, lentils, onion baji (not sure about that spelling).  Good stuff!  Yum!

BK, you will find that most Indian buffet food is very mild...at least the ones that I have been to...give it a try....and try a little of everything at the buffet no matter what it looks like.

A uqestion to the very knowledgeable stage fanatics at HHW:

Why didn't they make a cast recording of the musical version of GONE WITH THE WIND during its one year London run? With June Ritchie and Harve Presnell in the leads, it would have been glorious to listen to.

I love Indian food. My first experience with it was in London. I used to assist an editor there who loved everything Indian. He is a vegetarian, and had a tiny kitchen, but he could whip up the most amazing dishes and his apartment would smell so delicious from all the curries.

I don't like hot & spicy food and only a few times has something arrived that was too spicy for me.

I would start with chicken tikka masala or chicken korma...very mild.

DR SINGDAW, I must agree with DRS MATTH and CP about this particular production.  I will give him the eye shadow (since it's presumably stage makeup) - but the production is cut strangely and it's just not fun to watch.

Didn't care much for the Guenevere (Meg Bussart) or Lancelot (Richard Muenz) either.  I bought the video for my sister since she is a Harris fan, but I can't recommend it.

As for MacArthur Park - I always though it was kind of silly, but it was a great song to do for a swing choir.....

The more I think about it the more I wonder if juliet really is good and trying to help the Losties.  Just because she had a meeting with Ben. And just because she asked him to send her supplies does not necessarily mean she cannot be trusted.

Her flashbacks were real.  And to me they suggest that she did not want to be there.  It's possible they edited it that way to make it seem like she was good till the end of last night's show. But if the flashbacks were what happened. Then to me she is double crossing ben.  Her friendship with jack seems real. And her distrust of ben seemed real.  And her wanting to get out seemed real.

SPOILER

The main thing that's getting under my skin in the last couple of episodes is Jack's attitude.

His comment to Sayidh last night about Juliet:  "She's under my protection" seemed totally absurd to me.

Jack has no power -- no ability to utter magic words.  His ego seems excessively bloated.  I blame the writers, but am willing to give them enough leeway to let Jack sort through it.

A good sock in the jaw might be the ticket, though!

What I did enjoy immensely last night was Juliet's showdown with Sayidh and Sawyer (James).  I think she totally shriveled their scrotums with her knowledge of their pasts.

I have to agree with Pogue. MacArthur Park raises the definition of stupid song to a whole new level, no matter who is singing it. I've heard other versions and they all strike me as laughable.

I agree with you about the song itself, but I always thought that Donna Summer's version of the song was good.  ;)

I liked the show, as i always do.  But there were a couple of parts that i find slightly predictable (especially the whodunit).

I LOVED everything with bridget. I love this kid (i like the older daughter too). But this kid (her real name is maria) is the best.  She did this entertainment show correspondence gig at the kids choice awards. And she is just as funny in real life.  Anyhow her dreams and her storyline this week were great. I love when the kids are involved.

I liked alison's brother okay. When i saw he was a telephone psychic i could not remember exactly if he had any abilities. But i certainly enjoyed that he was able to see the dead guy.

I guess when the case was supposedly solved with so much time to go it seemed obvious there was more to this story.

I must say though i was a bit surprised with her brother's final decision. That was a lot of money he was offered!

I must say though i was a bit surprised with her brother's final decision. That was a lot of money he was offered!

I loved the episode and found the two of them having different visions of the same murder quite interesting.

You obviously don't remember from his two prior appearances, but Allison's brother Michael has shown abilities ever since he was introduced to us. The first year, he was back from the war having visions that kept his unit from being hit. They didn't know how he knew when to be safe, but he did. He tried to blot out his abilities with alcohol but it was only a temporary escape.

Last season he was involved in a superb episode with a girl he became very fond of who needed his help getting money out of a hotel room. We learned late in the episode that she was already dead, and he was responding to her spirit not realizing she wasn't really there.

The money offered was tempting for this episode, but I think the great feeling of accomplishment he got helping right certain wrongs was worth A LOT more. Looks like he will go back to LA and try to get on as a consultant with the police department.

CSI: NY had three deaths to investigate: one with a guy dressed as a knight being lanced in Central Park, one a guy with an ice pick jammed into his brain stem in a posh NYC hotel, and a third guy whose "dead" body was stolen from the ambulance and later when the body is fished out of the Hudson, the guy is still alive. All interesting cases, the third being slightly far-fetched.

This has been a strange day here in Rehoboth Beach, DE.

It was raining when I had to get to work, so I talked der Brucer into driving me, instead of my usual walk.

The rain continued, harder and harder, through much of the morning.  We had very few customers.  The store was so dead, it felt like rigor mortis was setting in.

Then, the sun started shining again, but the momentum never did pick up.

Now, it is nice and toasty as the evening approaches.

I was thinking of making a nice leek and potato soup for dinner tonight.  It's warm enough now that chilling it down for a Vichyssoise seems more appropriate.

That being the case, I'd better get it started now, so I can cool it down later.

Well... Yes.

In fact, everyone traipses back back and forth between NYC and CT, and vice versa.  We were only provided hotel rooms last week since we were in tech.  Otherwise, it's hop on the train to get there, and hop in the van to get home.  -Unless you happen to drive yourself.  It's like working at Papermill and Westchester when they do those van pick ups for their cast and crew each day.

-And I don't mind the train ride.  And when I take the train from Grand Central, I have that great food court and the Grand Central Market from which to forage a meal.

I agree with leaving the cake out in the rain as being silly..but the "and I don't think that I can take it, cause it took so long to bake it, and I'll never have the recipe again" makes it even funnier

BK, what was your Indian food experience?

I would suggest going to and Indian place that has a buffet, then you can try many different taste treats!

As I was perusing various eateries on-line yesterday I saw some very good reviews for a place called INDIA SWEETS AND SPICE which is at 3126 Los Feliz Blvd. It is cheap and, according to the reviews, quite tasty...and they show Bollywood movies on a giant tv screen. It also has an Asian grocery store attached. I will probably try to check it out during my touristy travels.

Hehe!

I actually tried that place when I was in L.A. for What If.  I was just staying about five minutes from it, and since my friends wanted to give it a try, we did.  It's a bare bones food place. You go up to the counter, you order, you wait, you get your food, you eat.  I recall it being surprisingly good.  And the grocery store was nice too.  -There's also another Indian place a few doors down with a similar modus operandi.

*Now if I can just remember the name of that small store in Culver City that also had a small food counter in the back.  The samosas and pakoras were some of the best I've ever tasted, and they also had a nice selection of sweets too.

Stay away from anything labeled "vindaloo" - that's some HOT stuff.  -Well, it's supposed to be, but a lot of places tone down the heat I've found in my travels.

However, the best thing to do to dissipate the heat is to eat some bread, and drink some milk - or order a lassi - it's made with yogurt.  The dairy counteracts the capsaicin in the peppers.

Well, Charles, I don't think I can take it, 'cause it took so long to bake it, and I may never have that recipe again....oh, no-o-o-o-o-o!

Dumb lyrics, but VERY fun to sing, especially when one is "partying."

Well, I always assumed that the song was written while one was "partying".    -At least that's how Lapine and Sondheim came up with the idea for Sunday in the Park with George.  ;)

The city is a madhouse.  Went out to ship - signals out, debris everywhere - ridiculous - I mean, its pretty windy, but c'mon, this is LA.  Somebody exhales and the city falls apart.  Every two seconds firetruck and paramedic trucks screaming down the street.

I was fortunate enough to see Gone With the Wind in London.  I enjoyed much more than I did the film.

There a 2cd (the London cast album is far from complete) of the Los Angeles cast with Lesley Ann Warren and Pernell Roberts. It is live but worth tracking down.

Robert Armin (Does anyone remenber DR Robert Armin?!) WAS in the L.A. productionof Gone With The Wind!

I'm playing auditions for the upcoming Broadway revival with Max and Laura - a.k.a. "The Ones That Most(?) Of America Wanted".  There are still some ensemble roles to cast.

As for Ms. Marshall, she was not in the session I was at yesterday, but I believe she was in today.

Maybe you need to be over 60 and remember the FLower Power Days with affection:
I like American Pie, MacArthur Park, A Whiter Shade Of Pale, Spill The Wine and Chick-a-Boom.  They are just surrealist pop.

I have a great love of the Flower Power type of songs, in fact that is one of my favorite era/type of song...such as:

Mr Tamborine Man - Byrds

Happy Together - Turtles

Incense And Peppermints - Strawberry Alarm Clock

Monday Monday - Spany & Our Gang

San Francisco Nights - Animals

Turn Turn Turn (To Everything There Is A Season) - Byrds

She's Not There - Zombies

Time Of The Season - The Zombies

Oh Happy Day - Hawkins, Edwin

etc, etc, etc.

I don't dislike MacArther Park. I have heard some version of it that I rather enjoyed. The version that was a hit is not my favorite version.

American Pie just annoys me for some reason and as soon as it starts to play I switch the channel. It never seemed like a "flower power" type song to me, however...maybe it is because it doesn't bring out the love and happiness in me when I hear it! LOL!

Whiter Shade of Pale is certainly in that hippie love catogory..but it is sadly an immediate channel changer for me, also...to my ears it just seems so unpleasant. I don't know why.

So thems my feelings on the topic. And no one has ever accused me of having good taste in music...so.

Esteemed BK, I know you don't like this, but could you please hire a professional editor, someone who is hired to catch those pesky typos and repetitions?  Not someone who is going to criticize or make suggestions as to your writing, but to catch the flubs like I almost just made when I almost wrote riting instead of writing just now.  They don't bother me, but you probably remember how nitpicky der Brucer got with the release of Writer's Block.  I don't want to go through that nonsense again.

Very, very possibly actually.  Even things that I am auditioning for this weekend wouldn't start up until later into May/early June anyway.

I'm still catching up, just finished yesterday's notes, and the note that the great Roscoe Lee Browne's passing.  He had one of the most fantastic voices, resonant and powerful.  His narration of Babe, in particular, was a key to that movie's success, so warm, generous, and willing to tweek the story every once in a while.

I need to check on the soup.

Why didn't they make a cast recording of the musical version of GONE WITH THE WIND during its one year London run? With June Ritchie and Harve Presnell in the leads, it would have been glorious to listen to.

I'll jump in here, DR MBarnum.  I love "American Pie," one of the most wonderfully textured lyrics ever written to a great rockin' tune.  I think it's amazing with its double and triple layers of meaning, and I think it captures the zeitgeist of the late 60s and early 70s better than almost anything except the original FOLLIES show poster.

It never fails; I fly and get sick.  I'm glad the nausea waiteda day to let me accomplish my tax returns.

I can't help it if I have to read the posts 8 hours after everyone else!

"She's Not There'' was from 1964 - more a "British Invasion" song.

Of course T"urn Turn Turn" has a history that is almost as old as TCB

I love "She's Not There"

One of my damp but undamaged packages today was the LP of The Drowsy Chaperone.  I can't find the serial #, perhaps some DR can give me a clew where to find it.  But it does prominently say SECOND PRESSING on the back in the bottom left hand corner.

DR MBARNUM - videos such as the one you linked to are so commonplace around here, I don't pay much attention.

The irony of a ban on a book about book banning is however very sweet...and completely lost on the father & daughter who brought the suit.

She didn't like the "cussing" and the "Bible burning" - and of course the book is against the "burning" of the books that takes place.

DR MattH, re: the brother.  Yes, now that you mentioned it i remember the episode with the already dead girlfriend very well.  But when they showed him trying to scam people as a phone psychic i couldn't remember exactly what his powers were.

The interesting part to me about this episode was that the brother got his info from seeing the dead guy. And alison got hers as usual from her dreams.  It sort of confused me why they don't show alison seeing more dead people. They normally talk to her mainly through her dreams.  But in a show like GHOST WHISPERER, Melinda is always doing what the brother did (solving her cases through talking to the dead people).

Roy Disney Talks SONG OF THE SOUTH

By Rich Drees

April 8, 2007- A potential DVD release for the controversial 1946 Disney film Song Of The South got a voice of support last night from Roy E. Disney, nephew of Walt Disney.

Speaking at the 16th Annual Philadelphia Film Festival, where he was receiving the fest’s Inspiration Award, Disney stated that a home video release of the film is overdue.

“I’ve got a bunch of cohorts working with me to convince the powers that be that it’s the smart thing to do,” Disney told the crowd at Philadelphia’s Prince Music Theatre.

Disney’s remarks comes on the heels of a statement made by current Disney President and CEO Bob Iger at the company’s annual shareholder’s meeting last month in New York City where he stated that the company was reviewing the film for a possible release.

Song Of The South has never seen an unofficial home video release in the United States, despite the fact that it was one of Disney’s first films to employ live action actors. Its song “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” won an Academy Award for Best Original Song while star James Baskett was awarded an honorary Oscar for his work as the kindly Uncle Remus. The film has come under criticism for its alleged racist treatment of Southern plantation African-Americans, though many of these criticisms erroneously place the film’s setting pre-Civil War instead of its actual post-Civil War, Reconstruction era. Although Disney announced in a 1970 Variety article that they were “retiring” the movie, it did receive additional theatrical re-releases in 1972, 1981 and 1986. Currently, illegal bootlegs of a 1980s Japanese laserdisc release of the film converted to DVD currently in circulation remain the only way that people can see the film.

Disney’s father Roy O. Disney co-founded Disney Studios with his more famous brother Walt. Roy E. Disney worked at the studio for numerous years as an editor and producer and oversaw the studio’s resurgence in animated feature films in the 1980s through the release of such films as The Lion King and Aladdin.

“[Song Of The South] is a wonderful film that deserves to be back out in the public,” stated Disney. “All it needs is context. Some of that animation is stunning, even by today’s standards.”

Well, when you posted about that, the great Oz, err... the great Roy had not spoken yet and this is what Bob Iger had said at the share holders meeeting in New Orleans (The New York City mention in the article has to be a typo!)

"The question of 'Song of the South' comes up periodically, in fact it was raised at last year's annual meeting ..." Iger said. "And since that time, we've decided to take a look at it again because we've had numerous requests about bringing it out. Our concern was that a film that was made so many decades ago being brought out today perhaps could be either misinterpreted or that it would be somewhat challenging in terms of providing the appropriate context."

So we might get our Laughing Place soon after all! :D

AP Song of the South News Article Reaches The Nation

This past week, AP reporter Travis Reed's Song of the South news article was distributed to newspapers and news web sites nationwide under various headlines.

Some of the online editions available include CNN.com, USA Today, MSNBC, the Orlando Sentinel, and several more. The news article brought a record number of visitors to this web site. In one day alone, nearly 7,500 people visited the site (compared to 800 normally!) The petition also gained over 2,000 signatures in the past week alone.

When Travis contacted me for an interview, I was thrilled to hear that the AP would be doing a news article based on Disney CEO Robert Iger's recent statement at the Disney Annual Shareholder Meeting that the studio would be taking another look at the movie (see article below).

This was the first time that I had had my picture taken along with my Song of the South memorabilia for a news article, so it was very exciting to have that happen! I'd like to personally thank Travis for taking the time to craft this news article. Through his efforts there has been an increased awareness for this film, and hopefully we will see some more action on Disney's part in the near future!

We had a great Indian place near us, and their special dish was green chicken. I'm not sure what they used to make it green...I think cilantro might have been one of the ingredients, but it was so delicious, and I used to enjoy taking it when I was working places where we had to bring our lunch and alarm my co-workers.

That restauarant closed and I've never found green chicken again, but it sure was yummy!

However, the best thing to do to dissipate the heat is to eat some bread, and drink some milk - or order a lassi - it's made with yogurt.  The dairy counteracts the capsaicin in the peppers.

Also raita, a yogurt-like condiment, is good for that, too.

The second commentary track on THE QUEEN DVD was marvelous. Robert Lacey who's written quite a few book on the Royals does a splendid job not only elaborating on the protocol and pomp of the sovereigns but also pointing out many aspects of the film's symbolism. He also points out where they got it right and in some instances wrong. Very educational and informative.

The reporter on tonight's episode was very familiar but I couldn't place her until I saw her name in the credits - Leigh-Ann Baker played Ellen all those years on WILL & GRACE. With a new hairstyle and stylish clothes, she was very attractive.

30 ROCK proved why it earned a renewal for next season with some really funny stuff with Jack getting a man-crush on Liz's new boy friend. Tracy, meanwhile, was attempting to get financing for a feature film where he would play Thomas Jefferson, King George, and all the other roles in the story of Jefferson's life. Rip Torn was the primary guest star.

With all the talk of clips shows tonight, I was looking forward to CSI since it was a new episode. SURPRISE! It was a CLIP SHOW summarizing the four "miniature murders" which have occurred throughout this season. Since several spoiler sites have been hinting that someone in the cast was going to die by year's end, tonight's episode made it crystal clear to me who that someone would be. (But, I read that he's in a pilot for a series next season, so I was already expecting he was a goner. Tonight's episode just confirmed it in my mind.)

There was a London cast recording and I have it.

I knew I shouldn't have answered so late. There are several postings already. However I do not have the gatefold vesion and I am not waiting for its cd release.

American Pie just annoys me for some reason and as soon as it starts to play I switch the channel. It never seemed like a "flower power" type song to me, however...maybe it is because it doesn't bring out the love and happiness in me when I hear it! LOL!

I guess not. American Pie is Don McLean's relections on the untimely death of Billy Buddy Holly - it is not a "happy" song.
