Well, you've read the notes, the notes went on and on and on, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're still talking about Hugh O'Brian.

Good morning, all!  It was so quiet this morning that I knew there had been snow, and the view of Holy Trinity across the street, with its steps and all the trees around it covered in snow, is quite beautiful in this gray morning light.

This morning is Chorus holiday concert work.  Around noon, I shall take myself down to therecording office before I meet my friend Matthew at the IFC Theatre on Sixth Avenue (formerly Frank Mills' Waverly) to see TRANSAMERICA.

I have a TOD question:  what's everyone reading these days?  I'm working through THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO again, Martin Moran's THE TRICKY PART, and the Oxford University Press orchestra score of RUDDIGORE.

Now there's an idea for an ad hoc topic of the day - what do you say when you want to curse but can't due to the circumstances (in an office or there are kids around), or just want to say something nasty or inappropriate but can't for decorum purposes.

I at times find myself saying something like "sheece" (instead of the impolite word for excrement), which I've deluded myself into believing that people think I'm just saying "Jeez."  :)

Very strong good health vibes to Danise and to Rodzinski.

I actually have to do some praying today due to a family matter, and if it's OK with you guys, I'll add a Refuah Shlemah (complete health) prayer for both of you.

Sunday morning greetings!  It's very gray here today and sort of icy.  I'm going to my mom's to make buckeyes to be sold at a charity event Tuesday evening.

DR elmore - I just got my library's copy of the Gower Champion bio and hope to have a chance to start it soon.  Also, my book group is reading Wicked for January, in anticipation of seeing the musical when it plays Cincinnati in March.  I will miss the Jan. discussion, because we meet on the 3rd Thursday of the month.  That's the 19th,  the Thursday of the week DH Richard and I will be  in NYC.

My question for today - does anybody think, or have any scoop, on whether or not Dirty Rotten Scoundrels will be re-recorded with Jonathan Pryce, like they did with Brooke Shields for Wonderful Town?

Good morning!

When I was getting ready and out on my usual Sunday morning stops at the ATM and grocery store, it was cold and overcast. It had rained prior to my getting up.

Now the skies are cleaning and the sun is out, it's warmed to the mid 50s, and it looks like it's going to be a beautiful day. But that might be the last for awhile. The five day forecast says temps not getting out of 40s starting tomorrow with lots of clouds, rain, and other possible precipitation.

No, I've never had it done. However, many years ago when I was in graduate school, a friend gave me a set of Tarot cards and a book explaining how to deal them and read my own fortune. I had some fun with them for awhile.

Around 1978, the rather spacey girlfriend of a mutual friend of mine and DRGinny's invited me to Dayton Ohio to have her friend Ram do my astrological chart.  I woud spend the weekend with her and Greg, they were going to drop some acid in which I was free to participate (I didn't, I watched) after Ram read my horoscope.  I had to give him all my info: birth date, place, time of day, etc. about a week before the reading.  I still have the whole thing on audiotape somewhere.

He told me I was going to live on a coast, east or west he couldn't say, but I would live near the ocean, and I would be involved in recording and communications.  At that time, I thought I would be an actor or director, I didn't know if I'd ever get my act together to relocate to New York, and I never thought I'd spend 1984 to the present in and out of a recording studio!

Many eons ago, der Brucer and I wrote a computer astrology program.

The challenge came from my days with the gay softball leagues.  The team that I was with had arranged for a booth at the Orange County Gay Pride Festival, and needed something to do as a fundraiser.  One teammate suggested something to do with astrology, another suggested computer dating, and a third suggested putting the two ideas together... and looked at der B and myself as the people who should do all the work.

Keep #3 in mind for later.

Der Brucer found an astrology computer program that was pretty rickety, and was able to hack into it and get it running at a fairly decent speed.  Meanwhile, I got some research going and was able to a) find a book that included the best matches for each astrological sign (that took care of the dating part on computer).

What we decided to try was a coding system: anyone who had the basic program run for them got a wristband made of yarn, which corresponded with their astrological sign.  They also received a list that told them which other wristbands to look for.  Believe it or not, this sold!  People at the fair spent the entire day looking for their matching bands.

But that wasn't good enough for us, oh no.  Der B, heading off on a business trip, asked me to dig up more data on each of the signs, and all of the rest of it, so that we could rewrite all the stuff re planetary aspects, houses, and such.  We could then sell this stuff at a higher price.  So I bought something like three or four books on the subject, compared the information, and wrote my own little blurbs for every planet placement, angle, and on and on.

When der B got back from his business trip, he plugged all the stuff I'd typed up into the program, and voila, we had our very own computer astrology program.

The only problem was, we had a very slow printer.

The solution was, der B bought new, second printer.  He hooked up both the old printer and the new one to the computer; if anyone bought the big, full printout, we sent that to the new printer; the old printer was fast enough for the Astro-Match stuff (which is what we called the dating stuff).

The whole thing was a hit, enough that when the opportunity came up to re-present the thing at the next gay pride fest, in Long Beach the following spring, we did exactly that, where it was once again a success.  Der B even got the program to run faster, so we didn't have the long waits for everything to print out.  We did run into a glitch with the aforementioned #3, who claimed that the program was partly his, because it was "his idea."  I've rarely had as much pleasure telling someone to pound sand as I did that time.

It's too bad that we didn't remember the old rule, never play the same game three times running.  We tried the same thing later that year, at the West Hollywood Gay Pride Fest.  Wrong audience entirely, far too jaded.  The Saturday crowd was too easily bored, the Sunday post-parade crowd was only interested in getting beered up.

We put the program away, I got disinvolved with softball, and that was that.  A year later, at the next WeHo Fest, three other entrepeneurs had their own programs running, in competition with each other and not in support of any groups needing fundraising (der B and I always did this as a charitable thing).

So der B and I instead got involved with politics for the next decade or so.

I had a very productive day yesterday (for me, on a Saturday, that is).

I was up early, made a few posts here, a few posts there.

I then installed new towel racks and TP holder in my bathroom.

I had a pleasant chat with an east coast friend for -- oh-h-h -- a coupla hours, I think.  I then listened to a coupla CDs.  I called my mom and we chatted another 90 minutes or so.

And then I watched the Spielberg "War of the Worlds."  This time, it was even better than when I saw it in a theater.  I am simply amazed at the tension and terror Spielberg was able to create and sustain in this film.  Even the basement sequence with Tim Robbins, which many folks thought slowed the film to a standstill, worked for me this time because I felt I needed a breather...but Robbins was so intensely creepy that even the breather built tension.  And the arrival of the alien visitors to the basement elevated/heghtened everything.

My emotinal response was strong toward the end of the film.  I really cared about the characters.  I maintain my assertion that this is one of Tom Cruise's finest performances.  I am not a fan, at all, of Cruise "the celebrity."  You couldn't pay me to watch him on a talk show or to cross the street to see him walk down a sidewalk.  But the man can act when the material is right for him.

I meant to take a nap yesterday.  Oh, yes.  I was tired early in the afternoon.  But things kept going on and on.  And I had to watch the last quarter of Navy beating Army in college football.

So...anyway.

It's another day.  I am fighting a cold.  The sky is blue, the sun is bright, the air is crisp.

And I have five more working days this year.

Count 'em FIVE.

My last day at work is next Friday.

Then I fly to South Carolina on the 14th, returning here on the 29th.

I see "Lestat" on the 31st.

The year is just whizzing toward its inevitable conclusion.

And I'm simply NOT CAUGHT UP YET!

Yesterday, der Grampa and I took the grandlads to see Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.  Mommy was with us.

It's amazing how wound-up she can get.  She was stressed out long before she got to the mall.  Fortunately, we weren't able to get tix for the next showing, as it was sold out, so I bought the tix for the showing after that, and sent her away to shop on her own for an hour.  Then we took the lads to a toy store, handing each of them a notepad and a pen so they could work on their lists for Santa.

They both enjoyed the film a great deal.  What we thought might be too intense for William didn't bother him that much, and Alex was riveted to the screen... except for all that girly stuff involving the ball.  I don't hold that against him.

Then we went shopping with the lads and Mommy.  She still hadn't wound down, almost screaming at them if they didn't behave as she wanted them to.  This was followed by dinner at a Texas-themed steakhouse.  Here she totally reversed herself: "Well, you can't expect kids their age to behave in a restaurant."

Love the kids.  Mommy is a pain.

Home late, which is why I didn't post then.

Glad BK's show went as well as it did.

Fingers crossed for the COLTS.  Thanks, DR RON.  This is the BEST season we have had since they arrived in the dark after bolting Baltimore.

We shall see what we shall see.  Of course while our schools, sewers, and neighborhoods are going to the dogs....we are financing a BIG new stadium for Mr. Irsay and his team to play in..."It IS needed...Indianapolis MUST have an NFL team....give us money."

I am still wondering where all the money went that was given to the Borns family to renovate Union Station in the mid-1990's....millions of tax dollars.  The Station thrived for one New Year's Eve and is now EMPTY and falling down.  Where are those millions?  In the pockets of the Borns family, I am sure.  AND NO ONE ASKS ANY QUESTIONS.

I shall now just await the car, pack up ye olde computer, and then be on my way to San Francisco.  As soon as I'm settled in the hotel and figure out how their confounded high speed Internet works (it's apparently free in the room, plus wireless in certain areas of the hotel), I shall be posting once again, prior to tonight's rehearsal.  Mr. Haines will be joining me there, and he told me he feels just like my performers in the LACC benefit, who showed up one night before the show to get their one rehearsal with the band.

Well, I had a pretty enjoyable afternoon with HALF A SIXPENCE. The movie looked wonderful, very colorful, sharp (with a few exceptions), and artifact free. And even though the sound was only Dolby Surround, it sounded lush and full.

I know the film was made in the era where studios were trying to catch THE SOUND OF MUSIC lightning in a bottle a sescond time, so all these overblown epic musicals were being churned out. I can see why CAMELOT, for example, would be huge in its movie version, but HALF A SIXPENCE? Blown up way too much for the slim story it was supporting.

And I wonder why director George Sidney occasionally filmed some of Tommy Steele's close-ups in soft focus. He wasn't old or wrinkled or any of the other reasons why some stars had directors use soft focus on them back in those days. And not every close-up of him was in soft focus. I found that distracting.

Nice to see Grover Dale is a great dancing part for him. But was his spoken part overdubbed by someone else? That speaking voice didn't seem to be coming from his mouth. Definitely sounded like a British actor had looped the dialog for him in a sound booth.

Right now, I'm dubbing HIT THE DECK onto a DVD from the laserdisc. Doesn't look like TCM is gong to be showing any of the musicals I wanted to dub over from TCM, so duping them from lasers is the next best thing.

No wonder I got chosen to play Lucy in that all-boy CHARLIE BROWN.  :)

On location at the Burbank Airport.  I am so senile - I printed out my transportation info for San Fran and left it at home.  So, I tried to use the airport wireless, which is NOT free - had to get a day pass from TMobile.  How annoying.   Went online, retrieved the e-mail with the info, and wrote it down.

Topic for the day:

Have you ever had a Tarot reading or other prognostic service?  How did you like it?  Was your practitioner accurate?

Yes, a number of times.  Some have been accurate and some made me laugh because they were so far off.  There was a great palm reader in New Orleans who was uncannily correct even though I gave him no information about myself other than my first name.  I sent a friend who doesn't really go for that sort of thing to him and the friend came back in disbelief at how accurate he was.

I like to do that sort of thing, but would never base a life decision on it.

When I was young I used to witch wells, not for a living mind you, it started as joking around, but I kept getting it right....that used to amaze people.  About 10 years ago my family decided to test me to see if I could still do it....I found the water main immediately.

Arrgh!  How do I know it's time to quit my holiday decorating for the day?  We have a lighted (faux) holly garland with which I festoon the stair rail.  Before starting the procedure, I tested the lights and then Richard and I tied the garland on the railing (using cinnamon dental floss - smells good!), added the decorative bows, and plugged in the lights.  You guessed it, they won't work.  So, I carefully removed the strand of lights, left the garland in place, and will deal with lighting it later.

Time to quit and have some cream of tomato soup with Pepperidge Farm goldfish floating in it.

Evening folks!

Thank you all for the good wishes.

I was awoke this morning (well, almost afternoon) by the sound of a fire truck going down the street.  For the first time in years, I missed waving to Santa Clause and I didn’t get to take his picture either.  Scum.   :(

I did get the tree up and the door decorated this afternoon.  It’s what they call a small table top tree but it is real.  It makes the room smell really good.

I guess the holidays are well and truly upon us.

It was nice to pull out the old ornament box.  Sometimes sad because (for what ever reason) some of them break.  I hold my breath sometimes hoping that a cherished piece made it though to one more year.

The thing I like about our tree is that it isn’t all bulbs on the tree.  We have lots of small toys, a bag of coal, birds, horses, a unicorn, a Pegasus, Reindeer, etc.  Where ever you look you see something different and fun.

I have two small elves that have been with us ever since I can remember.  They are stuffed and getting a bit old and shabby but a Christmas tree (I can't foresee mine ever being called a Holiday tree), wouldn’t be a Christmas tree without them hidden safely within its branches.  They are the first things on the tree and the last ones off.

I bought some of the new “icicles” and threw some “snow” on as finishing touches and the tree looks pretty nice.

Vixmom, maybe someday I will make the trip up later in the year to see some real snow for myself.  Don’t be surprised if I walk off the plane and run back to go home.  I don’t do cold!

JRand, your topic of the day about the cards, etc.  I’ve had them read a couple of times.  I had some interesting things told to me but none of them have come to pass.  And I didn’t really expect them to.   It’s great fun but that’s about it. Pity. I sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have thousands of people coming  for me.   ;) :D

A few years ago, I saw a play called "Hapgood," where the title character (a woman) is the head of a British CIA or something like that.  Anyway, she has a 10 year old son and she doesn't want to swear in front of him (especially during his soccer [football] games), so she's taught herself to say "Sugar" instead of anything else (and she makes her employees abstain from swearing, too...they have to pay money if they swear in front of her ;)).  It was real funny to watch the actress in the production that I saw trying not to swear during her kid's game.  She was out there yelling SSSHHHHHHHUGAR!!  I have actually said that out loud when in the company of kids. :D

I treated myself to "Holiday Inn" on DVD this afternoon.  IT had been a couple of years since I watched it (and it used to be an annual must-do).

My next holiday viewing will include "The Bishop's Wife" and either "White Christmas" or "Christmas in Connecticut."  And "Scrooged" and "Scrooge" will get a day, too.

Since TNT normally devotes a full day to "A Christmas Story" closer to "the day," I'll watch it on TV later.

I loves me Christmas movies, I does.

JRand55:  It's all SO STRANGE to me that the Colts are in need of a new stadium.

I was living in Indianapolis when the Colts franchise was awarded to the city.  And I was there when all the brouhaha erupted in Baltimore as that city discovered their team had simply stolen away in the night without any fanfare or press coverage.

I am a Colts fan from way back.  I was very, very fortunate to have been in Baltimore the day they came back after winning the Super Bowl in 1971.  That city went WILD with GLEE (no rioting or property damage, either).

The Colts have actually NEVER had a season like they're having now, despite their past championships.  No team has EVER gone 12-0 in regular season play, to my knowledge.  Of course, when Miami went undefeated, they played only 11 season games, and won all the playoff games and the Super Bowl.

The San Francisco 49ers came close to a perfect season one year...a missed field goal was the difference.  Ditto the Chicago Bears...whose one loss in the mid-1980s Super Bowl season was to the Miami Dolphins who protected the record but had a pretty dismal season of their own.

I hope they go the entire season up to and including the Super Bowl undefeated.  It's their time in history and they deserve it, IMO.

I left Indianapolis in May 1984 and the stadium was not yet completed.  And now they need a NEW one??!!??!

Ohh, my aching bones....

Soup?  I'll give you soup.

Had a nice flight (a little late getting on our way), but the traffic from Oakland to SF was horrifying (the toll place was backed up about five miles).  But, I'm in the hotel now (the Radisson Miyako Hotel in Japantown, which I gather is just a stone's throw from wherever the show is).  It's perfectly pleasant, but I have two twin beds which is disgusting to me.  I made quite a stink about it, but I didn't book the room and they're sold out.  I might be able to change tomorrow, but who wants THAT hassle?

Is this a slow news day here at haineshisway.com?

You want news??

Earlier today, I ushered for the Harlequin Productions' production of "A Stardust Christmas Carol (http://www.harlequinproductions.org/seasonpages/06stardust.html)."  Every year, Harlequin writes their own Christmas musical set in the 1940s about the fictitious Stardust Club and the gang that works and performs there.  It's a new story and usually some new people every year.  I've played Sidney the bartender in several of their earlier installments.  It's also their biggest selling show and has become quite the tradition for a lot of people!

Anyway, the cast is a mixture of local talent and professionals, and several have come down from Seattle!  But what REALLY surprised me is that JESSICA SKERRITT (http://www.harlequinproductions.org/images/Galleries/06StardustCarol/source/img_5919.htm) is in the show!!  They even have production photos on their website!  Click on her name for the best picture of her...it was taken during their final dress.  I think her hair color is different now, too. ;) She is quite delightful, has a lovely voice and a real stage presence.

BK, did you ever get a hold of her?  I think you wrote that you e-mailed her but did she ever respond?  I'm ushering again on Saturday, December 17th...do you want me to give her a message?  Or was it that only if she were coming to California would you want to get in contact with her?  Questions abound. :)

Can the Colts be the official team of HHW?
12-0.

I went to a pub in Times Square to watch the game. There was some loudmouth next to me loudly rooting against the Colts. Not rooting for the Titans, mind you, but AGAINST the Colts. It would have been annoying, but since the Colts were dominating, it was just pathetic. I didn't really have to say a thing to him. 35-3 did the talking.

Well DRMBARNUM - I liked TERROR BENEATH THE SEA very much, however, I could not understand how a man planned (or wanted) to control the entire Earth from underwater - and thought he could accomplish it using men in silver lame' jumpsuits.  But I did like it.

DR RLP - the argument by Mr Irsay (who threatened to take the Colts and go someplace else) was that the current Hoosier Dome (I refuse to call it the RCA Dome) does NOT have enough room for all the corporate suites and expensive seats that he wants to sell (and give to his friends).  To hell with the little guy (read my brothers) whose season ticket price goes up nearly $100 every year.  The Capital Improvement Board (a Good Old Boys Club that spends TAX dollars but is not answerable TO ANYONE and doesn't have to release its board minutes or budget - just SPEND money - including the "temporary" restaurant and entertainment tax that was imposed in Marion County nearly 20 years ago and is still being collected) has complete charge of the Stadium and any profits from it.  It's all money for HAVES and the HAVE NOTS....will still have not.

Hurray for the COLTS.  Go COLTS....and take the PACERS with you.

was marking time a bit tonight. The Applewhite story was definitely nothing much. Susan's story with her long-lost father isn't at all interesting to me. The day care story didn't end up amounting to much. Gabby versus the nun was kind of petty and not very satisfying (and much ado about nothing. Carlos will see through her machinations in time especially if she has some kind of ulterior personal motive).

Only Bree and Andrew's relationship held my attention, and while the bedroom scene between Andrew and Justin did definitely hold my attention, I still don't see what longterm glee he's going to get from turning in his mother. Seems to me the "victory" he might achieve will be pretty hollow and short-lived.

And has Bree's daughter vanished completely?

CROSSING JORDAN

spoiler

threw a bit of a wrench in the Jordan/Pollak relationship while seemingly setting up something new for Woody. Ah, frustration can be so, well, frustrating!

To those who saw Chita Rivera's show -  Does she even mention Gower Champion?  I've seen the show twice, and I can't recall Champion's name even coming up.

A topic:
What is your favorite made-for-tv cheesy Holiday live-action movie?

I recall a good one with Tim Matheson and Melissa Gilbert a few years ago. They started out hating each other, but he Christmas spirit prevailed.

The one I always watched as a kid was THE LITTLEST ANGEL starring Johnny Whitaker. I don't know off hand if it was indeed a made for tv movie, or just a Christmas special. But it was live action and, I am very sure, quite cheezy!

DR George, I am so glad that you got to see Jessica Skerritt! She is one heck of a performer and I do wish she would go to L.A. and become a star! She has the talent and the the looks...although she might be too nice for Tinseltown.

I did put her in touch with BK and I know that they spoke and/or e-mailed, but I don't think anything came of it so far.

I haven't started my raft of Christmas-themed movies yet, but I suspect I'll start some of them this week. Never seem to get around to all of them, but always find time for the Finney/SCROOGE, WHITE CHRISTMAS, and A CHRISTMAS STORY.

I just finished one crazy film! The JRand55 recommended AVENTURERA (1950) a Mexican musical/melodrama right up there with the likes of MILDREN PIERCE or any Ross Hunter soaper!

Jack, thank you so much for suggesting this feature film...it has been a long time since I saw a movie that was such campy, outlandish fun! LOL!

And all that Samba music! Wow...I must now look for CDs of Pedro Vargas and Los Angeles del Infierno!!

Haven't watched any holiday themed movies yet...but I did pick up a $1.99  DVD at K-Mart...they had a bunch of Christmas budget DVDs...called HOLIDAY AFFAIR. It is an episode of LUX VIDEO THEATER that was broadcast live on Dec. 22 ,1955 and stars Phyllis Thaxter and Scott Brady.

Yes, say hello to Jessica Skerritt for me.

Back from a rather formless rehearsal.  They got to my number around ten-fifteen (7:00 start), which may tell you something - and there were quite a few numbers to go (which should tell you something).  The piano player was freaking out with me because no one had given him a clew as to what I was doing with the song, A Parade In Town.  For some reason, he thought it was a ballad.  He asked if we could just work on it tomorrow, but I thought that was folly, so I completely put him at his ease by simply playing the "feel" I wanted - he got it immediately and we were done five minutes later.  More in the notes.  I'm eating my first and only meal of the day right now - McDonald's.

I don't remember Chita mentioning Mr. Champion.

I just read an article on Playbill.com about an onstage surprise wedding after a performance of THE DROWSY CHAPERONE. Turns out, I know the bride! Go figure...

What a rather errant and truant day of postings we've had, barely eking out our low.  Too many bloody errant and truant people on the weekends - they'll all be back with the usual I was too busy, or I did this, or I did that, and we shall laugh and laugh and just when we think we can laugh no more we shall laugh again.

So it is written, so it shall be done.
