Good morning, all! I have another morning with the McGlinnventory and possibly an afternoon at Encores! helping Joshie with the orchestra parts for FANNY, which are in terrible shape. He asked me two days ago if I had any time and I told him I could give him Thursday and Friday. I did not hear from him yesterday, so I'll call him in a bit to see how it's going. If he doesn't need me, I'll go to the NYPL and continue the newspaper research.

TOD:  The book, covering 1902-1906, is in the works: director Julian Mitchell, producer Fred Hamiln, and their proposed series of family musicals which began with BABES IN TOYLAND and ended with Fred Hamlin's death from tuberculosis in 1905. The book will conclude with a history of BABES following the close of the 1906 tours: three Broadway revivals, films, and loose adaptations following the expiration of copyright.

Morning, y'all!

Thanks to everyone for the feel-better wishes and vibes--they seemed to do the trick.  I woke up this morning and my headache was gone--Gone! My lower regions are still perculating and my back aches, so I am taking another day off. I think one more day of rest will do me some good.

Is anybody else gonna watch/record the new ABC law show called THE DEEP END (i think that's the name)?

I don't have anything on at 8pm until SURVIVOR comes back on feb 11th. So I think I will give it a try (although i have heard nothing about it save for a few promos).

Today I'll be working on the last of the Rossellini works in the Criterion box set: GERMANY YEAR ZERO. I've never seen it, but I feel like I have from the bonus features on the two previous discs which made reference to it (and gave away its ending). There are a bunch of bonus features, too, but as the movie is only 73 minutes long, I may be able to get a bunch of them done this afternoon.

I never saw MAGNOLIA at a theater, but since I liked BOOGIE NIGHTS, I took a chance and did a blind buy on MAGNOLIA when it came out on DVD. I loved it. It was a very risky film with a bunch of storylines, three hour length, and some unexpected twists and turns in the storytelling. I thought it was a near-brilliant film.

I have not upgraded my DVD but I'm sure I eventually will.

Apart from CBS' two BIG BANG THEORY repeats filling the SURVIVOR time slot, all the broadcast networks have new episodes of their shows on tonight, and that includes the CW with new episodes of SUPERNATURAL and VAMPIRE DIARIES.

So, I'm back to having to watch GREY'S ANATOMY "live" since I'll be recording the NBC comedies and SUPERNATURAL at 9.

I love the period of British history involving the reigns of Henry VIII and his children Edward, Mary, and Elizabeth. If I were a historical researcher, and I didn't have to compete with the THOUSANDS of other books which have been written about this period, it would be my choice.

Oy. I went to the library. They had some books waiting for me that i had reserved and a dvd.

Anyhow i got them at the front desk, but we can't pass movies through the detectors. So i asked the librarian to put my bag aside (which they do all the time).

When i went back to the desk to get them the librarian could not find them. It turns out the original librarian had forgotten to put the books under the desk and had just left them on the desk. Another librarian came and took them (as if someone had returned them).

Luckily the first librarian was able to fix the situation. Although it wasn't easy (since there were people who had reserved the books and it's not that easy to bump people).

The librarian was very sorry! (i should have watched to make sure she took the bag and put it under the desk).

We finished the McGlinnventory early since we ran out of cartons. I went to NYPL briefly to dig through the file drawers of the Theatre Collection which the asses in charge of the library - and neither use nor know how to use the collection - have moved from the third floor to the second so they can justify eliminating staff and putting the librarians in the collections onto the second floor desk duty. Researches, jumping from the third floor drawers of music to the second floor drawers of theatre and film, are needless and pathetic because of those fools. I keep hoping someone more irate will go postal and blow them away. Then maybe things will go back to the practical, easy method of research before last summer.

As to the McGlinnventory, I believe we've finished first pass on all printed material and we're down to a ton of records and compact discs.

Finished smoothing out yesterday's writing - and it took a while to do, realized I'd gotten a timeline wrong from much earlier in the book and made notes about how to move the three or four paragraphs to make it right (that's the best thing about this book - it's modular - and you just cut and paste things where you need them if you've screwed something up, timeline-wise).  Then I wrote one new page and shall now do a few more.  Someone asked me to meet them at Hugo's, but they can't go until this afternoon - and I don't know that I want to wait that long, but it's raining and the streets will be a mess, so maybe I'll just do all my writing now, and then go over there around two-thirty or three.

I am not quite sure what one does with quinoa after cooking it. Do you add it to other dishes, like soup?

I've never had it in soup, though I think you certainly could do that, say in place of barley, etc.  It's just another rice/grain substitute, basically.  Betsy usually makes it and then we put various "toppings on it."  She has one recipe that I think has garbanzo beans and a few other items in a sort of sweet and sour sauce that we put on it.

What's the word on Der Brucer's ticker???

Historic period to hang around and write about: American Declaration of Independence, Jefferson, Franklin. Then, of course, whisk me away before the ensuing horrible years of war. Would also like to pal around with Mozart - I like singing his music, and hear he was a jolly, optimistic fellow.

Universal (via Amazon) is making a bunch of their catalog titles available, including some old Paramounts, as "burn" discs.

Among the more interesting titles, at least for me, are THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER, RESSURECTION, RUGGLES OF RED GAP, THE BLACK SHIELD OF FALWORTH, SPAWN OF THE NORTH, TELL THEM WILLIE BOY WAS HERE, etc.

Sheesh, this rainy weather kinda robs me of intention... still, maybe i can haul my ol' bones off to the gym. I'll stop by and see my cousin Tina (you remember Tina, from last year...<sigh>) on my way to give this evening's piano lessons. Have I told you about that??? This guy, who lives near Rikki, hired me to come to his major estate - yes, there are swans on his pond, and a herd of alpacas in the 'yard' and the house looks like an English castle - and give him and his little daughter piano lessons after dinner once a week. Quite lucrative - but, I tell ya, I EARN it!!!!

It's the same way with people who design computers for libraries...they don't have to use it, so they don't care how cumbersome it is to use.  We're getting a whole new system in May and we're just now starting to learn about how different it is from what we have. :P

Still raining like crazy.  It occasionally stops for five minutes, and then another downpour happens.  We haven't had anything like this since the year I moved into this house.  Guess there's no more water shortage, not that there really was one to begin with.  And now that we'll have plenty of water, do you suppose the DWP will put the rates back where they were?  Riiiiight.

Just wrote another couple of pages.  I think about seventeen or so today.  Whew!  I'm in a really fun spot now, talking about the Nudie previews and we're just having the one that sold the film.  Oh, the memories.  This is going to be a LONG book, but as long as it's fun and interesting, I don't care.  In fact, I have just gotten to the point where the Hofstetter books would be ending - about 267 manuscript pages, which produces a 200 page book.  That just boggles my mind to have done what usually takes eight to ten weeks, page-wise, in three weeks.  I suspect there will be another 267 pages, but then who knows?  It may be less, it may be more, but there's no way this book will be under 350 pages.

The first 45 minutes or so of MAGNOLIA are quite simply a directorial tour de force.  I was amazed.  Things petered out a bit after that for me.

Bleh! I hated MAGNOLIA

My mother called to tell me she dropped a dozen eggs on the floor.  4 brokes but stayed in the carton, she said rather than get mad she thought " at least it wasn't a can of red paint" lol
;D

As for the woman looking unhappy in reference to the photographers, she was looking down, not at them.  some people rescued would look up.  i figured aside from her ordeal making her unhappy, so did the crowd.

I know what you meant and I'm sure you're right, that is unless she had gone without food and water long enough that she was really out of it

Watching some of the First Season episodes of the Adventures of Superman.....George Reeves had an amazing smile....although Superman didn't smile too much, nor did Clark Kent.

And I really like Phyllis Coates as Lois Lane....she was one tough cookie.

She sure screams a lot during her season on the show. But I liked her. She's much more sardonic than Noel Neill as Lois.

Those first season episodes are much grittier and tougher than subsequent seasons of the show.

Is anybody else gonna watch/record the new ABC law show called THE DEEP END (i think that's the name)?

I don't have anything on at 8pm until SURVIVOR comes back on feb 11th. So I think I will give it a try (although i have heard nothing about it save for a few promos).

No, I have no intention of watching it. The cast didn't interest me (though I liked Billy Zane in THE PHANTOM), and I don't care to see a young version of GREY'S ANATOMY set in a law firm with everybody hopping into each other's beds. GREY'S gives me MORE than my quota of that.

When I went back down, I finished up the two remaining bonus features on the disc. If I had known they were so short, I would have gone ahead and finished them this afternoon. I just assumed they were going to be as long as the features which had preceded them. Each was about 5 minutes, so I had a nice long amount of time.

I started with last night's UGLY BETTY. As usual, Betty was rushing around trying to be all things to all people, especially in her apartment building, but I did like the story with Marc a lot this week. They occasionally soften him, and it's always appealing when they do.

I don't know if this has been mentioned here or not, but I read this on another messageboard:

"Universal has announced a new Universal Vault Series of DVD-on-Demand titles that you can now purchase via Amazon.com, much like Warner's Archive program. The first batch of titles available includes Gold Diggers: The Secret of Bear Mountain (1995), A Good Man in Africa (1994), A Bronx Tale (1993), Pure Luck (1991), Shout (1991), Stick (1985), The Incredible Shrinking Woman (1981), Resurrection (1980), Blue Collar (1978), The Last Remake of Beau Geste (1977), Shoot Out (1971), Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here (1970), Gambit (1966), The Brass Bottle (1964), Kitten with a Whip (1964), The Chalk Garden (1964), The List of Adrian Messenger (1963), 40 Pounds of Trouble (1962), The Perfect Furlough (1958), The Black Shield of Falworth (1954), Dragnet (1954), House of Seven Gables (1940), Spawn of the North (1938), Death Takes a Holiday (1934) and Ruggles of Red Gap (1933). "

Several appealing films in that list. Did they speculate on what each movie will cost?

I just went there and answered my own question: list - $19.99  ;  Amazon price  - $17.99

Some are as low as $14.99, including "Resurrection" (an absolutely mesmerizing film with tour-de-force performances by Ellen Burstyn and Eva LeGallienne, plus a superb Maurice Jarre score).

I just ordered RESURRECTION and THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER.

Fortunately, I am under the protection of some very strong angels or else I have whucha call Good Karma - as soon as it was time to get in the ol' Kar, the rain abated quite a lot, and I was able to make it from Agoura Hills to Marina del Rey in under an hour, with no mishaps along the way. And the piano lessons were fun to teach tonight, too. And I had delicious chicken and salad at Rikki's house. Ah, life is good!!!

I have high hopes for the Blu and Ray of The Music Man.  I've already seen the screencaps at DVD Beaver and, as per usual with him these days, it all looks yellow - but my experience with his caps for the last six months is that anything that looks yellow in his caps looks perfect on the disc itself.  Even his caps for Michael Clayton, a film that has more blue than any film in recent memory, are yellow.  But the sharpness in the caps looks pretty good, which means it should look great.  Warners has been getting the color right on almost every recent Blu-Ray release, so I'm hoping this continues their good streak.

Good Evening!

So... I headed back out to Flushing, Queens, a few hours ago for some Chinese food with some friends.  We ended up at "Northeast Restaurant" - also known as "East North Food Culture" and "Dong Bei Feng Wei".  My friend, Eric, took on the ordering duties for the evening, and in true Eric fashion he over-ordered...

"Stupid" Chicken Stewed Wild Mushrooms, Fresh Leek & Pork Pastry, Pork & Sour Cabbage Dumplings, Sauteed Egg with Egg, Stuffed Minced Mutton with Fish, Sauteed Pine Nuts with Corn; and various "appetizers": kimchi, seaweed & boiled peanuts.

-There were only three of us at the table.

It was all quite good, and we all left the restaurant with some very and satisfied stomachs.
