DR Elmore - I wrote a college paper on the Federal Theater Project and love the movie version of CRADLE WILL ROCK!

Well, dear friends, I've been awake since about 4am (couldn't sleep, even though I didn't have to get up 'til 7), and I drove 220 miles again today, so - 'night!

I'm spending my afternoon watching Tim Robbins' wonderful epic THE CRADLE WILL ROCK. I had wanted to see this when it was released and somehow never caught up with it. It's ambitious, covering a lot of American history, but the cast is quite wonderful and the filmn's design very evocative. I loved seeing Bertolt Brecht with Marc Blitzstein in Union Square before a riot, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo with Nelson Rockefeller discussing art. I had known the story of the first night of "The Cradle Will Rock" from John Houseman's biography, but I really wasn't aware of the poticial intrigues to close down the WPA and Federal Theatre. It alll seems quite relevant today.

The film I keep thinking of while I'm watching it is the glorious Les enfants du paradis, which is, I'd guess, twice the length of this film, but which covers an equally turbulent period in French history from a theatrical viewpoint and runs the gamut of social strata.
I love that movie and love Bliztstein's score. Robbins was in the company with Patti LuPone when it was revived and that great cast recording made.

Watching one of my favorites (and one of Elmore's least): The Pirates of Penzance. What fun, although I doubt England was ever this sunny on Feb. 29, regardless of the year.

I loved THE CRADLE WILL ROCK! I found the whole inquisition against the Federal Theatre and Hallie Flanagan rather similar to the inquisition against the New York State Theatre Institute: all the time in the world given for those with evidence supporting its closure and as little time as possible for its defenders. It was great to see my beloved Barney Hughes, and I thought the rest of the enormous cast was quite wonderful.

Now I want to watch Les enfants du paradis again, but I can't see it tonight: MILDRED PIERCE is on.

I will say that listening to the soundtrack of "The Cradle Will Rock" is not as pleasant as watching it incorporated into the movie. -At least for me. Some of the treatments of the songs just don't sit right on my ears. Or something like that.

DR Jane - Whilst I was wandering around the Upper East Side, I came across a new store: The London Candy Co.

They opened a week ago. Right now, they have the usual suspects: Cadbury bars, Galaxy Bars, All Sorts Licorice, etc., plus a coffee bar serving Ovaltine and Horlicks.  And their shipment from Thornton's is due in next week. ;)

I agree with you. But the Patti LuPone recording with the Acting Company is wonderful.

Finished watching one motion picture on Blu and Ray and may at least start a motion picture on DVD.  This has been a very good weekend of catching up on movies, although there are still a lot in the to be watched pile.

Here's an interesting article from today's New York Times by their film critic, Manohla Dargis, about the current state of movie-going:

I enjoyed that. For all the movies I watch on DVD, such as the one I'm watching now, I find there is nothing to compare with the interaction that happens in a theater. I only get to the theater maybe five or six times a year now, but I treasure those visits, even when the movie is not what I expected.

Every time I think about The Friends of the Library I hear "He gave River City the library building, but he left all the books to her" go through my head

Thanks to all for the Audition Vibes.  I did my best - so now it's out of my hands....

I started singing my song in the wrong key - but corrected about four measures in....and finished big and RIGHT!  So there was that!

How very Mayor Shinn-like!

Honestly, cost is one of the main reasons most people I know don't go to the theater more than they do. That and having children

Well, the 5 and a half - or was it six and a half? - hour long MILDRED PIERCE just ended and it's truly amazing. If she isn't one of literature's stupidest characters, I don't know who is! Jane Austen's heroine of NORTHANGER ABBEY is awfully stupid, as is DAVID COPPERFIELD's "child bride" who dies far too late in the novel to suit me, but Mildred is an enormous idiot at times, completely clueless.

I loved every minute of it, but her co-dependent relationship with her daughter Veda can be a trial: Mildred gets a kick out of suffering over Veda and Veda gets a kick out of putting her mother down. Unlike the Joan Crawford version, in this one, Veda gets the last turn of the screw and it's a goodie! Those DRs waiting for the DVD are in for a treat.
