Well, I screwed up a number for the Arlen concert! I confidently turned over a number to the copyists and left off the final sung section. Today we have to deal with my lapse of memory and see what repair damage we can do in the next 4 days, and I hope we can get scores and parts printed for Chicago's Wednesday rehearsal since it will not be fixed in time for Monday. I'm quite angry at myself over it.
On a happier note, tonight I see DRs Rodzinski, TPunk, Ben and Athony for CAPTAIN LOUIE at the Little Shubert Theatre. Remember, the show's at 7:00, and I will be there by 6:30 to pick up the tickets.
Meeting cute? Only happens in mythology.

Hmmmm.....the only "meet cute" that I can think of right now is in THE BIRDS when Rod Taylor pretends to think that Tippi Hedren is a clerk in the pet store.
I also like Robert Wagner and Audrey Dalton in TITANIC 1953....she gets into an elevator upon boarding the ship, Wagner and his group run up and he says: "I'm the steward assigned to you, miss. Can I help you with something? Find a deck chair, draw your bath?" And she replies crisp as lettuce: "Shouldn't you be in school somewhere?"

This is the last time I will be able to post on a weekday morning for awhile. Sob!
I've got more things coming (hopefully) for the CD so it will have to be next week before I burn and and send them out.
That works because today I can go get the mailing sleeves & labels for them, print out the labels and get them ready to go!
I have to go get my after surgery X-ray today. Ugh.

The only Meet Cute that comes to mind right now is Ann Marie meeting Donald Hollinger on That Girl. They flirt when she sells him a pack of gum, they argue when they both want to buy the same rolltop desk, and he "rescues" her from being kidnapped (she's actually making a commercial.)

As for zaftig - Emily Skinner - Well, that's the term that the Washington Post and the New York Times have used to describe her during her recent theatrical outings.
As for buxom - Dolly Parton. -Although, I guess she could also be slightly zaftig.

My 45 day free trial of Tivo Plus ran out last weekend, but I immediately signed up for the full service on Monday. I discovered a couple of neat-o features that I didn't have with the free trial:
Tivo Online Scheduling -- I can search for upcoming shows and tell my Tivo to record them from anywhere I have internet access. I experimented this week and found I could schedule a show up to 15 minutes before it airs.
Music & Pictures -- because my Tivo is connected to my home network, I can listen to music files and view pictures I have stored on both my home PC and my laptop through my TV set.
TivoToGo -- this is a sort of disappointing feature. Again, because of my Tivo/network connection, I can upload shows that have been recorded on my Tivo to my PC or laptop and view them through Windows Media Player. Trouble is, it takes too freaking long to make the transfer. It's much, much quicker to simply burn a show onto a DVD. Though it would be nice to be able to edit the commercials out of some shows before I burned them to DVD. Can't have everything, I guess

Woohoo! Time for a media check:
The dvd in the player at the moment is DISC 3 of THE WIZARD OF OZ' manificent set. The third disc has the silent versions, the 1933 cartoon and a documentary (short, but sweet, on L. Frank Baum).
DVDS:
TITANIC - watched all of it over the span of two nights. Still technically proficent, still moving and the new transfer is exceptional.
THE WIZARD OF OZ - velvet-like, glorious transfer with many new details; some folks are going to prefer the older transfer - it's quite debatable. All I can say is don't let the screen caps posted on the net guide your vision, the *motion* picture tells the true tale.
DARLING LILI - as stated before, I prefer the shorter cut. Now, I discover that my videotape (from AMC) of the director's cut also differs from the dvd. . .running time is about 5 to 10 minutes longer, the tape contains no overture (nor did the film itself) but it contains the exit music - all cause for me to put on my researcher's hat and investigate.
GODS OF OLYMPIA - talky, talky shot on video flick from the state of Washington. A former Pittsburgher (and fellow Junior High Quiz contestant) appears in it.
K-HOLE - same former Pittsburgher, Michael Haboush, wrote and directed this story of addiction.

TOD: We're on the 3rd WOO disc, too. I hate to say it, but I think I preferred the previous WB release in terms of saturation. Maybe this restoration is "truer" to the original, but I just loved how the colors popped off the screen on that previous release. This one seems just a little more muted.
Meet cute: the best part of that Flowing Gold meet that JR mentioned is right after the meet, when Frances drives John off in her car. Now the esteemed Elia Kazan mentions in his autobiography that "as an actress, Frances was just a beginner," but I ask you--how many actresses, with their back to the camera, and with most of their body within a car, could convey as much intention as Frances does as she jerks the car forward, causing John to fall over? I love that moment.
I had a most interesting email yesterday from the "archivist" of Ralph Edwards Productions. If they think I'm going to donate private pictures to them, they are sadly, sadly mistaken. ;)

I find it funny that the wags and nay-sayers are simply going by a screen-cap posting to denounce the new transfer, but hey, that's the internet for you. Personally, I think the new transfer is just sublty richer than the old transfer, and I did something I rarely ever do: I actually ran a a/b comparison (starting with the door opening onto Munchkinland) to judge for myself. The only reason I can see for keeping the previous transfer is for the 1979(?) interviews. . .
After I finish up some book research on LILI, I'll watch all of it. . .I checked out the major most memorable scenes last night (wanted also to be sure that the horrible bird song was gone) and the lavender and other pastels Julie sports came through with flying colors (pun always intended).

Good Morning! -Again...
Well, when I got upstairs, there were no breakfast foods to be found in the fridge. Well, at least no protein sources - eggs, yogurt, etc. So, I went ahead and headed to the grocery store for said eggs (the organic, free-range, Omega-3 ones were on sale!), yogurt and some peanut butter. Then I came back here and made some scrambled eggs. -The yogurt will be my snack later today, and possibly the peanut butter too.
And that's been my morning so far.

I'm supposed to go see Nanci Griffith tonight with my friend, Andy, however, Andy is not really in the mood to see Nanci Griffith anymore. -He bought the tickets two months ago. So... He's gonna check in with me during his break this afternoon, and we'll see if we'll be making alternate plans. In either case, I'll be picking him up from work at 5:00, and we'll go where we go to from there.
*I like Nanci Griffith too, but she's playing at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA. It's a great venue, but it's also General Admission. And with my knee, I'm not sure I'm in the mood to wait for two hours in line to get in. We'll see.

I lugged 20 lbs. of potato salad in to work 30 minutes ago.
My hands still don't feel right from having peeled and cut up 20 lbs. of potatoes.
Figure in the oversized jar of mayo, the small container of mustard, the celery, green pepper, pickle and onion, plus a topping on each container (two containing 10 lbs. potato salad each) of a 9.5 oz jar of garlic-stuffed olives, and there is probablly an argument for 24 lbs. of salad material.
Gosh! I hope I don't have to carry any home with me!!!

I am most seriously displeased with my cable company...again. For the second time in less than a month, I had to watch primetime television with less-than-acceptable signal quality.
At some point between 9 and 10, the signal was lost completely.

Der B and I will be ladsitting again tonight. The idea is to get their parents out of the house. The other half of the idea is to put in some personal time with the grandlads, reading and playing music and watching videos.
And, somehow, getting them to eat dinner.
William isn't the problem, but the difficulties with Alex have compounded. He's always been a picky eater, but now he's had some bloodwork done (!!!) and he's got a cholesterol problem to beat the band. At eight!
This is what comes from his only eating mac and cheese and hot dogs, and from his parents allowing him this diet.
So, a fruit salad will be in the works. Ah, but what else to serve?
I'm so mad at his parents, for allowing this state of affairs, that I could spit. Directly at them.

At least you're allowed to put other things in the potato salad. That out-of-stepdaughter of mine insists that potato salad consists of potatoes, mayo, and nothing else. If I add anything, she will refuse to serve it to anyone at whatever bash she's throwing. Bleh.

I was actually parodying JRand55's comments to JoseSPiano about his having seen Jose's twin...younger, of course; slighter in build, and one other difference...but insisting, of course, that he saw Jose.
I attempted to paint a picture of "my twin" who looked nothing like me physically, but in whom I saw myself.

I have to write a harp part for a piece we're doing at Christmas time at church and while I understand the pedal system on the harp, I'm wondering if it was traditional to include pedal markings in the music, or can the harpist figure it out.

I'm faced with a conundrum.
Yes.
Either a conundrum or a kettledrum, I can never keep them straight.
I have piles and piles of unlistened-to CDs.
I have piles and piles of unwatched DVDs.
I have stacks and stacks of unread books.
And frankly, my dears, I haven't the time to do much of anything with any of them.
Much less keep them organized, which is the true source of my conun/kettle(?)drum.
There should be a place for everything and everything in its...but the problem...when I put things away I forget about them until I'm looking for something to while away a couple of hours...never mind that I often replay DVDs or CDs I love a lot...but when things are put away, I make no efforts to listen/watch/read them...so I make piles and stacks and piles and stacks and I don't have that much surface space, so the piles and stacks get higher and more unwieldy (unwieldier, as it were)...and any mild earthquake is going to result in a major catastrophe, let me assure you.
My weekend, I'm afraid, is going to be spent "arranging" things.

Question for DR Elmore or anyone that knows the answer:

DR Matthew - Having "written" a few harp parts myself, as well as transposing some harp parts...
As long as the harpist has a couple of minutes to look the score over before the rehearsal, don't worry about putting in the pedal markings. Most, if not all, of the harpists I've worked with usually prefer to put their own markings in and/or change the ones that are already there.
*Now, if there's some desired "effect" or strange modulation involved, well... But, still, I've found harpists prefer to make the part their own, so to speak.

DVDs: Well, they're stacking up like hotcakes. We've got the Astaire/Rogers set, at last. The collector's ed of Titanic. The pilot of Stargate Atlantis (der B enjoys that show a lot). A couple of Time-Life documentary sets on Ancient Voices and Lost Civilizations. And a couple of music video sets, one with Lynyrd Skynyrd (because the son-in-law introduced the grandlads to their music at one point), and a four-disc set of Elton John.
CDs: More stuff from Time-Life, historical compilations of folk music and some "Singer-Songwriter" stuff.
Books: I've got a stack of some twenty cookbooks/food writing to go through.

I know I heard the twist i believe on a commercial. I can't imagine why they would ruin it like that. Crazy considering there were only 4 people there!
I felt bad for the baseball guy. He seemed so sharp. And their event really was a success (except for the fact that the batting cage took up the sales room).
How funny watching all four of them in the cab afterwards.
And i cannot wait till next week to see what the other contestants do when NOBODY comes back to the apartment! How long will they wait? Will someone fill them in? I bet they'll just have them wait and wait and wonder. Should be funny.

I have a CD database, and am contemplating one for my DVDs.
I always seem to be adding things to my CD database, but I never seem to access it prior to bidding on something on EBay that I cannot remember already having (and subsequently now have two of).

About two years ago, I finally arranged my collection into "unwatched/unlistened to/unopened/unread" and "been there/done that" shelves. And whenever I buy something new, I put it on the "un" shelf. Which happens to be in plain view, so...
I still have many things on the "un" shelf, all of various degrees of "un-ness", but, slowly but surely, I've been catching up.

Yes, with the DVDs. The CD database fell to the wayside some time ago, but I've managed to keep track of the DVDs - currently some 670 titles.
The DVD database is on a spreadsheet, with sorting by title, year produced, genre, sub-genre, rating, whether there's a commentary track and/or featurettes.

Yes, I couldn't believe how bent out of shape folks got by screen captures from the new and old OZ DVDs! Get the disc and look at it with your own equipment, and then make the decision to keep or return. Good gravy, people can be dumb!
For the very first time, I noticed the wire that was keeping the flying monkey's wings outstretched on this version of the DVD. And I had NEVER noticed the error with the ruby slippers until John Fricke pointed it out on the commentary. He didn't mention it on his laserdisc commentary, so this must be a continuity gaffe that has recently come to his attention.

I could swear i saw them say somewhere that 4 people would be fired! Where did i hear this? A commercial? Some place like ET? I wasn't sure if i had heard right (cause it seemed crazy). But i know i saw it somewhere yesterday. Cause I knew it! Maybe I read it on tvrules.net in their show preview?

It wasn't an orchestration problem; it was a copy situation I'd forgotten, but the ever-reliable Tom Murray has come through. Curtis reduced the full score to 8.5x11 and faxed it, with my edits, to him. We will send the full score via Frd Ex for tomorrow, and hopefully by Sunday afternoon I can proof it. We'll routine the parts and print them on Monday for Tuesday delivery and read it in Chicago on Wednesday. I leave Monday morning so it will not be ready for Monday afternoon's rehearsal. Luckily, it's only 56 bars long, but it's a very full orchestration.

I have to write a harp part for a piece we're doing at Christmas time at church and while I understand the pedal system on the harp, I'm wondering if it was traditional to include pedal markings in the music, or can the harpist figure it out.
Let the harpist mark the changes; I always end up giving them too much info and they liquid paper it out as they work on the part.

IME (in my experience in internet lingo), folks who want you to "donate" offer nothing, zip, zilch in return...except their fleeting gratitude...and, perhaps, a grudging acknowledgement on their website or in a program, etc.
Funny thing...I was once bidding on an item on eBay (before BK alerted me to the glories of esnipe.com)...and one of the other bidders contacted me and asked me if I would refrain from bidding any further as he was gathering materials on this actor and wanted the photo for a "web" museum, and had limited funds. EBay was, apparently, his main venue for collecting the materials he wanted for his tribute
As it was, I had bid as much as I wanted, and I didn't bid more, but I also did not give him the satisfaction of knowing that.
I've had a couple of experiences wherein folks have contacted me after an auction and requested I "donate" or sell to them the item I'd just won -- at a lower price than I paid.
My guess is they may have thought I might be a dealer collecting items for resale....but, still...taking a loss isn't something folks usually want to do. I know I don't.

But I sat there thinking: and i gave up dancing because I thought MY thighs were too thick... oy, the self-image monster! (Just btw, the theater was PACKED - so hungry are these folks fa kulchah, out here in the middle of the ocean...)
Speaking of which - I'm beginning a Shakespeare readings series at the local theater book store, a play a month is the goal, but in Hawaiian time, it'll be once a quarter. So many wonderful roles I'm finally old enough to do!

Been here a month, and already have harvested some tomoatoes. The lettuce is very slow, but parsley and cilantro and basil have graced my salads for over a week now. I would think that Steph and Bobby jon would perhaps bond. He hasn't really been beaten by her. She never voted him out. She simply made her fire a bit quicker. I think they spent a lot of time together,and probably trust each other.
I think Gary just wanted to keep the strongest people, sort of like what steph did. Just because lydia was on her original team, doesn't mean she would form an alliance with her since she is weak. Steph was smart and aligned herself with 2 very strong people (jamie/judd).
I'm not sure if danni/bobby jon/brandon/gary will stick together. Will cyndi rejoin danni? Or will cyndi/steph/jamie/judd/lydia and ralf (?) stick together and pick the others off one by one?

She is constantly "sitting out" competitions.
By the way, last night they did a bit on festering sores on Brandon's shoulders and on Amy's face. Later in the show, those sores were less noticeable, which led me to believe they received some sort of medical attention.
I think it's certain, as those sores would most definitely become infected...and probably were allowed to fester far too long before being treated.

As to yesterday's TOD iIf I do say so myself I make a nice potato soup and my pea soup is also very delicious. Those are the only two soups I make from scratch, bit they serve as nice meals in the winter time.
Tomovoz I would be most interested in your tomato soup with orange juice and sherry recipe if you don't mind sharing. Right now we settle for Campbell's condensed.....
(I haven't seen the commercial yet BTW)
For chicken soup I usually use Lipton's as the base and add carrots and cut up chicken and my own noodles and some fresh ground pepper.
The best Lobster Bisque I have ever had was made by my friend Pam who made it right in my kitchen one New Year's Eve day.... she brought her own live lobster and huge shrimp and lots of sherry and heavy cream and then settled in making the base... she worked on it for hours and it was fantabulous!!!!

Those sores grossed me out! I also saw they were less obvious in certain scenes. But I wasn't sure if they were airbrushing them out, purposely not focusing in on them, or what. Yuck! Yuck! Yuck! Especially the ones on Amy's face. I can't believe all those women can go without make-up. I know i would not want to be seen on tv without anything at all.

So...I went down to our patio for the start of the BBQ.
They had five different people make potato salad! I had no idea. They have about 50 lbs.
And what are they doing? They are serving it reservedly to each paying customer...one bowl at a time (from five different containers full). They've only opened one container.
I asked them why they aren't letting folks serve themselves, and they said they have to be conservative.
I said, "I didn't make 20 lbs of potato salad and cover it with two jars of garlic-stuffed olives just to eat someone else's idea of what potato salad should be."

I'm faced with a conundrum.

And frankly, my dears, I haven't the time to do much of anything with any of them.
Much less keep them organized, which is the true source of my conun/kettle(?)drum.
There should be a place for everything and everything in its...but the problem...when I put things away I forget about them until I'm looking for something to while away a couple of hours...never mind that I often replay DVDs or CDs I love a lot...but when things are put away, I make no efforts to listen/watch/read them...so I make piles and stacks and piles and stacks and I don't have that much surface space, so the piles and stacks get higher and more unwieldy (unwieldier, as it were)...and any mild earthquake is going to result in a major catastrophe, let me assure you.
My weekend, I'm afraid, is going to be spent "arranging" things.

I enjoy SMALLVILLE, but I usually catch it in reruns as for the last couple of years, it has had the misfortune to air opposite other shows that I couldn't be sure would be rerun.
SMALLVILLE is one of those shows that looks astounding in high definition.

The horrible thing is after its that noisy your ears are still ringing after it stops and you can't hear correctly for a while. I recommend a hike in the woods! (also good for keeping the sawdust out of your lungs!)

ENjoyed watching the rest of DARLING LILI. I once again agree with DR td, the film is the proper length now. The story isn't complex enough to need all that padding, and with the cut scenes now in a separate section, I can see the children's chorus number and understand it's a sweet song but totally unnecessary to the film.
I do think the beginning of "I'll Give You Three Guesses" could have been spared the scissors, however. It's lovely.

Next I watched the fabulous DETECTIVE STORY. When you've got an engrossing play with lost of fascinating characters, there's no need to do fancy stuff with the camera. He had that same no nonsense approach with his film version of THE HEIRESS.
I had tears in my eyes by the end of DETECTIVE STORY. Very effective melodrama.

GODS OF OLYMPIA - talky, talky shot on video flick from the state of Washington. A former Pittsburgher (and fellow Junior High Quiz contestant) appears in it.
K-HOLE - same former Pittsburgher, Michael Haboush, wrote and directed this story of addiction.
I rented both of these from Netflix. I got them because a woman that I work with is in a couple of Michael Haboush's movies. I don't remember which, but in one of them, she's a (homeless?) person walking along the side of a street with no sidewalks and one of the main characters asks her a question and they have a little scene together. At first glance, you might think that she's a man, but her name is Carole.
I've rented several of his other movies, but really only because some were filmed in Olympia. Okay, there is some (young...but legal) eye candy, but the movies are NOT worth watching all the way through just for that. ;)

Ron how frustrating! I would want to sample various potato salads.
Another person made her potato salad (also 20 lbs.) using a pesto sauce as dressing.
And danged if I didn't miss out on that altogether!!!
But I did get to taste mine and one other person's.
I got my "usual" compliments (people LOVE garlic-stuffed olives on anything, it seems), and I have "some" to take home.
Apparently, the "organizers" claim they told each potato-salad-maker to make 5 lbs. Well, nobody told me. And nobody told the other person who made 20 lbs.
So...when I was told I'd made too much...I had to ask, "Then why are you being so chintzy dishing it out. Put out a couple of bowls and let everyone help themselves."
I got a blank look for a moment, and then I heard, "Good idea!"
And so it was...let it be spoken, let it be done.

I know I heard the twist i believe on a commercial. I can't imagine why they would ruin it like that. Crazy considering there were only 4 people there!
I felt bad for the baseball guy. He seemed so sharp. And their event really was a success (except for the fact that the batting cage took up the sales room).
How funny watching all four of them in the cab afterwards.
And i cannot wait till next week to see what the other contestants do when NOBODY comes back to the apartment! How long will they wait? Will someone fill them in? I bet they'll just have them wait and wait and wonder. Should be funny.
The first five minutes of next week's show will really be "Must See TV" (well, if you're an "Apprentice" fan...if not, feel free to miss it ;)). Anyway, I thought that only two people were going to be fired. That's happened once before.
But it was a SALES event, not a workshop event. So they did fail...or at least just not "get it." When one of the woman (I forget which) said that they started out with the idea of a baseball diamond and items for sale at each of the bases, that was good, but then their "ideas" got the better of them and they lost sight of what their task was. I don't think Trump should have fired all four, but hey, he's "The Donald." He can do whatever he wants.

I'm expecting a UPS package today...seasons 3-7 of "Friends".
I'm certain it won't arrive, however, until Monday. And that's only because it was ordered first on Wednesday afternoon, and shipped last on Wednesday evening after two other orders I received yesterday (but which were ordered several hours after these episodes).
Such are the vagaries of my relationship with Amazon.com and UPS. This shipment arrived in Lexington KY yesterday morning at 11:30 a.m. It did not leave until this morning at 3:30 a.m. This "2nd-day delivery" parcel sat in Lexington 16 hours before being forwarded on....to Louisville KY, where it was scanned on arrival at 4:15 a.m.....and there has been no update since. So...they've obviously decided it can wait the weekend.
But I'm not bereft of anything to do this weekend (and I'm taking the High Holy Day off on Monday).
Oh, no. I have piles and piles and stacks upon stacks of things to sort through, listen to and watch, should I not become too overwhelmed and exhausted pondering same.

Michael Haboush is the Ed Wood of the millenium. His films are poorly written and tremendously inept. I don't recall the name of the film I partially watched, but such words as pathetic, inane, and inadequate come to mind.
Today I want my UPS delivery man drawn and quartered. He's usually here between 2 and 5 pm. Yesterday, he tried to deliver a 2nd Day package at noon. I don't know if he tried to find someone in the building to sign forr it, but he didn't leave it. Today it's past 5 pm and the jerk hasn't show, I've missed getting my new glasses since I'm stuck here, and I have no idea is the ass will show before I have to leave for the theatre.
Now, if he doesn't leave it, I'm screwed. I'm away Monday for a week, and an important TWO DAY SHIPMENT has beenscrewed up by the damned shipper. No, I am not happy. And I'm not happy about waiting another week for new glasses either.

I have a CD database, and am contemplating one for my DVDs.
I always seem to be adding things to my CD database, but I never seem to access it prior to bidding on something on EBay that I cannot remember already having (and subsequently now have two of).
I used to have a database, but my computer crashed last year and I lost everything. I had format (CD/LP/CD-R), title, composer, lyricist, company and number. I want (need) to redo it, but I have to wait until my housemate has gotten ALL of his stuff out of my house (he has this weekend) so that I can use his room to look through and sort stuff that I have in boxes. Then I can get to all of my records and redo my list. That's the plan, anyway. :)

DR MATTH - if you don't have anything you MUST watch tonight, you might try TLC at 7 pm and watch Ballroom Bootcamp. It is a very interesting show and you see the results by the end of the episode, no drawn out week after week waiting.
Three ordinary people are given a six-week crash course in a Ballroom Discipline and then compete against each other (they each have a professional partner) at a real competition.
Fun and interesting!!!

I sort of watch it. But I must say it's my least favorite show that I watch on the WB (Gilmore Girls, Charmed, 7th Heaven, Everwood). I guess they are more girly shows!
I just find that there are certain episodes of SMALLVILLE that really do not interest me. Although I always enjoy the scenes with Chloe/Clark. And I'm happy that he knows she knows about his powers.

Well, we went to a local costume show. I decided to be Alice in Wonderland and got the costume there. Paul is going to create a costume from one of the other characters. He won't tell me which one until tomorrow night but he thinks it will be fun and easy for him to do.

My Bollywood movie for the weekend is:
BHAKTHA PRAHALDA (1967).
My favorite genre of Bollywood films are the mythological stories and this is a fine example. In fact I counted no less then 18 film versions of this movie having been made in India since 1926! So it must be a popular story! LOL!
Lord Vishnu punishes two of his devotees by causing them to be reborn into vile lives 3 times, afterwards they will be forgiven for insulting the 3 sages who had visited heaven...or something like that! LOL!
Lots of color...lots of cheesy special effects...some fun song and dance numbers...lots of fun!!

You obviously haven't seen "A Slice of Terror (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0439814/)." That movie doesn't show a positive portrayal of anyone. The lead (played by Michael) is a "developmentally delayed/disabled/whatever" person who is taunted by some boys. He brainwashes his counselor to hypnotize the boys to do what he wants. He makes them have sex with each other as a punishment (punishment?? :o) and then kill each other...all while they're still hypnotized! He keeps saying in the voiceover they they'll be "humiliated," but they never are! They do what he makes them do without question (in the privacy of a house) and they die without anyone else ever knowing or seeing what happened and embarrassing them. They're never humiliated at all. It's just plain dumb. I will admit that it's very nice to watch with the sound off ;), but it's not a well thought-out plot device.

Agree with Detective Story (basically what I wrote about the film several weeks ago), but not about Darling Lili, either transfer or content (as I also wrote several weeks ago) - I find Lili a complete mess at any length because it simply doesn't know what kind of film it wants to be, and therefore it ends up being five films. It has its moments, but you don't care one whit about one of these characters (I mean, the leading lady is a German SPY) . What it has going for it is Julie singing, and its production design, photography, and Blake's wonderful direction. The transfer is very sharp, but the color, while vibrant for some colors, is completely off for the flesh tones, which look anemic and brown and don't resemble at all what flesh tones look like on film. Any perusal of a properly-timed transfer will tell you the story.

As for A SLICE OF TERROR, yes, I have seen it. It certainly confounded me, until I realized that it was all a bad dream from which that character wouldn't awaken from. . .see, in films, EVERYTHING goes back to THE WIZARD OF OZ. . .
Anyway, I'd rather see Haboush acting than directing or writing. . .

I only saw Darling Lili once, when it came out, and that was exactly my feelings then! I thought I was in for a musical comedy which it's not really! And Julie as a spy is as believable as Julie as a transvestite!
BUT I think she's never been lovelier than in this film along with STAR!

Back from CAPTAIN LOUIE, which has a couple of nice Stephen Schwartz songs, but struck me as "Sesame Street does GODSPELL" several times. I liked the professionalism of the children and young adults, who sing quite well. The costumes are imaginative and fun, and I liked the sets. My friends Dan Feyer and Bruce Doctor are in the band, and I saw them afterwards. Then, DRs Ben and Anthony went with my friend Matthew and me to the diner next door to the theatre for a visit and a nosh.
DRvixmom, I don't know how the vixter woud like it. I think she'd have more fun being in it.

Where do I get garlic stuffed olives? I've never heard of these, and I love olives! (are they green or black?).
In the U.S.A., they're sold in grocery stores/supermarkets. Normally, they're sold alongside the pickles and other preserved items like pickled okra and pickled asparagus, etc.
The only garlic-stuffed olives I've ever seen were green.

I just find that there are certain episodes of SMALLVILLE that really do not interest me. Although I always enjoy the scenes with Chloe/Clark. And I'm happy that he knows she knows about his powers.

Didn't have the evening I expected at all. First, I checked the DVR to see what shows I had recorded overnight that I had forgooten about. The only one last night was a special on Hitchcock, and when I played it, it was the same "Men Who Made the Movies" special that I had seen earlier in the week. The cable program guide simply called the show "Hitchcock." Had it given the right name, I wouldn't have recorded it at all. It was erased quickly.

Last weekend, I started rewatching BATMAN BEGINS (after watching it all the way through last Friday) and got about an hour into it before I turned it off. So, tonight, I picked up where I had left off and finished watching it again. Liked it even more the second time through.
I read on the internet this morning that the sequel is tentatively scheduled for 2008.

This has been a terrible "sinus" day...as in mine have been dry, dry, dry...and semi-clogged.
I've been spritzing with saline solution all evening and have gotten some relief.
I think I need a vaporizer.

Then, since the DVR had let me down for my Hitchcock fix, I went through the Hitchcock section of my DVDs and selected the 1956 THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH. Always have loved it, and loved it this time, too.
There was a nice big scratch in the middle of the screen fairly early on, but most of it looked excellent. Mono sound, of course, and it was just fine.
I haven't rewatched many of my Hitchcock films on the newer TV, so I have some catching up to do there.

I think more studios ought to take a risk with projects they anticipate doing sequels on and shoot all the stories at once, over the period of a year or two, like Peter Jackson did with "Lord of the Rings."
I think the characters would become more intense and interesting if the actors had more time with them and the stories.

I only ask, because I used to do this in my villa in Napoli. All the floors were tile, so I had to mop a lot.
I'd do little production numbers just to break the monotony.
But now, it takes me all of 2 1/2 minutes to mop my kitchen. I can't even do a decent time step in 2 1/2 minutes.

Praying for a trivia contest tomorrow. Got nothing going on before Dear Friend Milla's cabaret show at 5, dinner after that, then THE ODD COUPLE. I'm concerned about ODD COUPLE after the mixed reviews it's gotten, but Milla puts on a good show and dinner should be nice, at least.

Man, what a long day. Had a meeting that went late, then I was just too zonked and tired to attend the little get-together. I wouldn't have arrived until nine-thirty and that's just too late. Perhaps I'll go get some licorice.

Well, Andy and I did end up going to see Nanci Griffith afterall. What a wonderful concert! -And a very nice venue too, the "historic" Birchmere in Alexandria, VA.
Her opening act was an up and coming singer-songwriter, Elizabeth Cook. It was just her and husband, a fellow singer-songwriter and guitarist, on stage for their 45-minute opening set. She's basically a cross between Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton, lots of heart and lots of sass. -And a very quick wit too! The two titles that stick in my head - and which have quickly headed to the list of My Favorite Song Titles - are "Did You Have To Go Through This, Dolly?" (which she wrote after meeting with a record company exec), and "Sometimes It Takes Balls To Be A Woman". -That last one was a real crown pleaser!
Then Nanci Griffith took the stage for a nice two-hour, non-stop set. Simply amazing. Her very unique voice and vocal coloring first caught my ear when she on the Garrison Keillor's "Prairie Home Companion". Folk, bluegrass, country, rock-a-billy, folk-a-billy, etc... she does it all. She featured a good mix of new and older material. One song, "Heat of Indochine", which is off her latest album, had me tearing me up - it was a tribute/lament to those who gave their lives in the Vietnam War - and she dedicated the song to our Brave Men and Women who are currently in the Middle East fighting in a "current day Vietnam". Very touching. She also devoted some time to talking about the recent hurricanes that have affected the Gulf Coast region, which is a place she calls home.
Her back up band, The Blue Moon Orchestra, was top-notch. No strings - well, no violins - but a guitarist/accordionist, bass player, keyboard player and a drummer made more than enough sound on that stage. And what a sound it was.
She'll actually be at Carnegie Hall next week, and she mentioned that the ticket sales have been sort of slow (since Clear Channel has been doing next to no promotion for her). It will be the final concert for this tour for the new album. And all proceeds will be donated to the County Music Hall of Fame, as part of the "One for the Hall" campaign that is going on now where artists have been asked to donate the proceeds from one concert this touring season to the CMHF. Additionally, it will be her 20th Anniversary of her Carnegie Hall debut.
And since I'll actually be working in NYC next week...

As I was saying...
About an hour before the concert, I had a call from New York City. Actually, a couple of calls...
As of now, I will be playing rehearsals next week for Lestat. Due to another set of crazy circumstances, they need another staff-pianist now. So, I'll either be heading up tomorrow or Sunday, going over the show with the conductor, and then joining everyone for the first day of rehearsals on Monday. And then Tuesday night, there will be a Group Sales/Media event at which I'll most likely be playing too. With Sir Elton John in attendance. So...
Needless to say, I'm waaaay excited. I'm only booked for next week at this moment, but there is a possibility... Well... There are other possibilities and options that may end up presenting themselves over the next couple of days.
I'm a bit overwhelmed at the prospects, but I do know that I have obligations I have to fulfill here in DC too over the next couple of weeks. Lots of contigency plans. Lots. But for now, I'm looking forward to being there on Day One thru Day Six. And if it turns out things need to be discussed, worked out, bargained for, well... We'll cross that bridge when and if it comes to that.
*Honestly, I feel I'm in a win-win situation. But I'm also at the point - at least right now - where I hope that the decision will be made for me, rather than by me. Just sooo much to process. -Guess who's not sleeping tonight...

Well, let me say that Kate Clinton's (http://www.kateclinton.com/) performance tonight was pretty damned funny! She was irreverent, political, right on target...a couple of older couples walked out within the first 15 minutes or so. Too bad for them. Her act was a little more than an 1 hour and 15 minutes and her book, What the L? (http://www.kateclinton.com/store.html#store-whatthel) was being sold in the lobby. She came out (no pun intended ;)) to the lobby after the show and signed autographs for anyone and everyone. Even if people didn't (or couldn't) buy a book ($20, cash only), there were the postcards advertising her show that people could have signed. And she signed them all and chatted with each and every person. I highly recommend seeing her! ;D

In my DVD player: nothing. I just returned all three movies that I got from Netflix.
In my VCR: a tape to tape tonight's "Ghost Whisperer" and "Threshold." I'll have to wait until tomorrow to watch those. I'll be off to bed very soon.
