Title: SOCKS
Post by: bk on June 29, 2007, 12:00:26 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had the history of socks, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're trying to find their socks because they are tired of walking around in the slime barefoot.

I hope the shrew was tamed successfully tonight DR George.

We had a great show last night (Thursday) at our final dress rehearsal. :) There were about 30-40 people in the audience and they actually laughed during the performance...and the best part was that they laughed at funny stuff that was happening and was supposed to be funny!  Overall, a great way to start a run.  I don't know if anyone flubbed any lines.  I didn't notice any.  And I got all my costume changes and everything went well.  Tonight, we have the official opening night and a party at a cast member's house.  Then, we have nine more performances over three weekends, and we're done! ;D

Holy mother of pearl, I just went into the bedroom and somehow slammed my foot into the wheel of the bed - I thought I was going to DIE - three of the toes became gushers and I finally got multiple bandages around them and the bleeding has stopped, but oy are they hurting and throbbing.  I don't think I broke anything (at least I hope not since I am, at the moment, sans insurance) - I can walk around, the toes are just throbbing a little.  How I'll be in the morning we'll have to wait and see.  I hate when that happens.

Today my DH and I fly to Chicago for a bar mitzvah of the son of dear friends of ours.  Jonathan is a delightful young man.  Even so, we pray for the continued good health of his parents, because if anything were to happen to them, we are named as Jonathan's guardians.  Which would certainly be a lifestyle change for us!

Another wonderful NY get-together was had last night. Leading people through the crowds of Grand Central Station to the 6 Train was quite the job. We all got down the stairs just as the correct train approached. Ginny asked how I knew it was the correct train. It was coming in on the local track and we were going to Astor Place, 5 stops away on the local line so it could not be any other train  ;D

Larry, Singdaw and Jose, in an attempt to lose us in the crowd, decided to enter the train through another door. They missed Michael Barnum's heroic behavior. He saved a mere slip of a girl from being caught between the closing train doors. We all began talking and she was fascinated by this odd group of people heading down to Little India for food. She recommended a place in the other Manhattan Little India on 26th Street but by that time it was too late.

We arrived at Astor Place, got off the train and began our trek through the much changed East Village. I pointed out the Public Theatre (where Chorus Line began) and

Cooper Union (http://www.cooper.edu/administration/about/history.html)

It's a very interesting place. Check out the link and learn about some of New York's mid-1800s history.

We then went to Taj Mahal for dinner. While dinner and the company was, as usual, sparkling, the service was not up to par, but still, a good time was had by all. Much food was consumed and much more laughter and witty repartee was exchanged.

The Australian Ice Cream was a great way to top off the meal. We walked over almost to Avenue A on 8th Street. When we entered, there were a couple of people at tables. I guess people just know that Hainsies and Kimmlets know the hot spots because by the time we left the place was hopping. There was a line almost out the door. I had some wonderful chocolate custard ice cream as we walked back toward 3rd Avenue. Oh, yes, we did have a stop at the aforementioned Bollywood DVD/Music store. We got to hear hysterical commentary by Elmore on the Bollywood movie running on the television in the window of the store. Some of us did enter the store to make sure Barnum had not fainted in pleasure at being in a temple of Bollywood. I think the clerk was happy and surprised to find such a knowledgeable young, non-Indian man to purchase his products.

We finally made it to 3rd Avenue and I broke off to walk home while the others got into various cabs to head uptown. Since most of them have posted I assume they all made it home without incident (though there has been no posting by Barnum, I hope the trip to the Boat Basin with the burlap bag wasn't made in the middle of the night by an exhausted Elmore  ;))

Anthony was glad to hear about the good times but sorry to miss the event. He also missed a wonderful lunch but he will get to see MusicGuy when we meet for breakfast tomorrow morning before MG takes flight back to Phoenix.

Anthony had a wonderful time visiting with his relatives from Florida and though he missed the fun in New York he knows that Hainsies and Kimmlets can't stay apart for long (we're like long-lost siblings) and there will be more chances to see you all again.

It's time to end my novel and do the obvious. Who knows who has come and gone since I began this story.

Later, gaters.

And a lovely good morning Fred........... I really hope that our casual lunch can work out for today, and I think it will work OK for Jose after his rehearsal to come back up to the theatre district.  Of course......if our lunch restaurant was within sight of Little House Of Pies  :)   well, that wouldn't be all bad.

I think dear Jose thinks I've gone "pie-mad" since he first took me there!

I did not see TROG when it first opened.  I saw it when it first made its way to television.  It seemed to make its way to television very quickly after it opened.  I concur with Mr. Kimmel.  It's one of the worst movies ever made.  I bet that's an hour and half of your life you'd like back, BK.

Some stars never learn how to retire gracefully like Cary Grant.  I mean she had all that Pepsi Cola money.  It's not like she HAD to do TROG.

It was probably more ego than anything else. Once a "Star" always a "star". Also Bette Davis was still working and putting out top notch work (okay maybe not for another 6 years or so, but she was working a lot more than old pal Joan)

RE: last night's SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE

RESULTS SPOILERS

*
*
*

I haven't read yesterday's posts yet. But i must say that i am NOT happy with the girls results from last night.

I was in agreement with the guy they eliminated. I really thought danny shouldn't have been there. And neil's solo was the best of the night. And although jesus did a great routine his first week. To me that was mostly because of the choreography (that was great).

As for the girls, anya shouldn't have been there. But i think it was totally unfair for them to get rid of jessi. They shouldn't have made her dance for her life unless her and pasha were in the B3.  Anyhow she did the routine and it was good. That should have played into the equation IMO.

I would have gotten rid of sara. But lauren was pretty bad too. I definitely would have gotten rid of either of them before jessi. It just seemed so overly harse. The whole premise of the show is that you cannot be voted out if america does not put you in the B3. And then they go and completely overrule that.

Not cool.

Friday morning greetings!  Here is the promised photo from our dinner at Taj Mahal last night:

DH Richard took the photo.  I'm in the foreground, surrounded, left to right by DRs MBarnum, Ben, Jose, Singdaw, MusicGuy, and Elmore.

Before we ordered, DR MBarnum told me that I'd probably need Tums after the meal, but I didn't.  Must have been the soothing Australian ice cream that kept me from getting indigestion.

I do, however, have severe allergy symptoms and on our way to meet DR Elmore at Lincoln Center will stop at a drug store for Claritin.  I think this clinches it that we will NOT try to sit on the stage for Inherit the Wind - they sure don't want me up there sniffling, sneezing, and coughing  :P

DR Edi - yes, I did have a manicure Wednesday in Crystal City.  It has lasted through several showers and shampoos and lots of luggage wrestling.  A home manicure would never have lasted for me like this.  Now on my list - a pedicure!

An end to a curiously short, but intensely tiring week.

A week of extremes, actually.

And I look forward to a break from chaos, disarray, moodiness, petulance and the occasional sick-making gushiness.

Good morning, all! I slept quite well making plans on how to explain the reasons for an anchor and a burlap bag when I showed DR MBarnum the 79th Street Boat Basin.  I was up at 8:10 or so, bathed, dragged my guest off the fire escape and forced him to clean up.  I was going to post but he got all crazy and insisted on dining at once so we went over to the 82nd Street Cafe and had a little breakfast.  I was coaxing him into a view of the Hudson River when DR MusicGuy called him about lunch and my plans fell through on Mikey seeing more of the Hudson than he'd planned.

We walked to the Boat Basin and saw the boats and Mikey headed off to the Virgin - always living in the past - Megastore.  I am about to leave for Lincoln Center and the NYPL.

DR Ginny, thanks for posting the photo. Everyone with cameras keeps talking about photos - Barnum's is here in the apartment - but we were late last night with the idea of a photo and missed having DR Rodzinski who abandoned us for a performance at Joe's Pub in the shot

I received another Kevin McKidd movie in the mail yesterday -- "Dog Soldiers" -- plus a Miss Marple (Joan Hickson) Classic Mystery Collection (9 two-hour movies).

Yet....I was unable to contemplate watching anything that would take more than a short while to watch.  I did manage another episode of "Ghost Whisperer" before the sandman carried me off.  It was very intense and well-acted.  I'm quite fond of this show!

We are supposed to be in the grips of a "cooling" trend, but last night was one of the least comfortable nights -- temperature-wise -- I've had this summer.

It was very cool outside, but my condo was warm and there wasn't even an occasional whisper of a breeze to blow through my window.

My curtains were as unmoved as Larry Moore would "claim" to be if he should see MBarnum's head hit the iron railing after his pillow fell off the fire escape.

Slept another couple of hours, which was good.  I'm walking, so that's good news, and while the toes are obviously sore, I see to be able to bend them easily, so that's good.  I'm not looking forward to removing these bandages and looking at them, though, but I will a bit later.

Meanwhile, I continue to have no responses from anyone at NYMF - I gather this is SOP for them, but it's annoying given that I'm about a month behind every other show in terms of paperwork and things to do.  I just have a few questions and I've now asked them several times to two different e-mail addresses and left messages for two people last night and nada.

Funny, I'd gotten an e-mail from the exec director of NYMF several days ago welcoming the show and me - he was the only one I hadn't written to, so I dropped him a line telling him that I didn't seem to be able to get responses or info - within ten minutes of sending it, I got the call I'd been waiting for - and the news is GREAT - we're in the biggest venue, the Acorn Theater right on Theatre Row.  200 seats, a very big stage, and I couldn't be happier.  We open on Thursday September 20th and our final performance is on September 30th.

And "This Here Site" is probably repsonsible for selling more CDs, DVDs, and books than many a local newspaper. And, if I'm looking for opinions of B'Way shows, TV Shows, or Movies, I trust the "amateurs at "HHW far more than the "professionals" at the NYT.

Amazon.com is offering, as its Deal of the Day, the "Rocky" anthology of five films (all but the most recent one, "Rocky Balboa").

Each has had a high-def remaster, each is presented in anamorphic widescreen (1:85:1 ratio, IIRC), each has DTS sound (along with 5.1CH).

And the remarkable price for this set of films:

$19.95

Anybody who'd eat a product called "Veggie Booty Snack" deserves an unhappy outcome!

I was having trouble with my computer. So I called Harold the computer guy, to come over. Harold clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem.

He gave me a bill for a minimum service call. As he was walking away, I called after him, "So, what was wrong?" He replied, "It was an ID ten T error." I didn't want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired, "An, ID ten T error? What's that .. in case I need to fix it again?"

Harold grinned.... "Haven't you ever heard of an ID ten T error before?"

"No," I replied.

"Write it down," he said, "and I think you'll figure it out."

So I wrote down .   I D 1 0 T

I used to like Harold.

I began my afternoon viewing with some MURDER SHE WROTE episodes. I began with one that featured many of Angela's friends from MGM and other studios: Kathryn Grayson, Gloria DeHaven, Ruth Roman, and Julie Adams and Graham Jarvis and Fran Ryan were also guest stars in the episode where a former student of Jessica's writes a PEYTON PLACE-style book about Cabot Cove barely disguising the many town characters.

Next I watched the dismal, unentertaining QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE. Even on a camp level, I didn't find it much fun. I think Zsa Zsa is one of those folks who got worse as an actress as she gained celebrity. She gets top billing, but she's totally wretched.

Funny, Joi Lansing is unbilled as the left-behind girl friend of womanizer Patrick Waltz, but she's more gorgeous than any of the so-called bombshells on the planet Venus.

It was fun finding some costumes borrowed from FORBIDDEN PLANET used in this movie.

I completed my afternoon viewing continuing with THE ALPHABET MURDERS. Tony Randall's French/Belgian accent comes and goes rather alarmingly in this, and it doesn't have nearly the sense of fun of the Margaret Rutherford/Miss Marple films. The best moment in this is when Margaret Rutherford and Stringer Davis amble into the frame as Miss Marple and Mr. Stringer commenting on how obvious a mystery this one is to solve.

Still haven't quite finished it, though. I will when I go back down.

I haven't tried Veggie Bootie (it is a silly name), but just in case I passed the info along to Bryan & Craig.  I don't know about Craig but I suspect Bryan would pass on this product due to the name.  I'm guessing the packaging is aimed at children.
Not really.  There's an entire line of products from the same chip-maker.  It's more aimed at young, supposedly with-it adults.

Children eat Goldfish.

I had to repress the Skinner/Ripley discs.  They were supposed to be delivered here on Monday.  It is now Friday, and I can pretty much say they won't be here today.  I have told the lady I do this through, that if I don't at least have 100 discs by end of today, she can pull the order and pull all my other projects out of there, including Milla, which they've had for two weeks and which I gave them until July 9th to do, but I now am too angry to take that chance, unless they guarantee it in writing and that they will be financially responsible if they don't deliver on time.  That's the way it's going to be from now on.  I am so sick of amateurs - if a pressing plant is professional and they promise a date and then miss that date for five consecutive days, then they deserve to go out of business.  And poor Emily Skinner is doing a limited run of Witches Of Eastwick and has no CDs to sell (I sent her my last fourteen, which she got on Monday).  Infuriating.

Ooh!  Ooh1

Ive suddenly REMEMBERED!

I began watching "The Colossus of Rhodes" last night.

Oof!

Rory Calhoun is too smarmy for words.

And this film is basically a set piece, thus far.  Some 40 minutes into the picture and everything seems to be taking place in a maze of some kind...CHEESY sets, to be sure.

It's all too funky.  The movie had me snoozing off and on until I simply could not sit UP in my chair any longer.

I may return to it....some day.

I guess this is what happens when there are get-togethers.  Slow news days.

I unbandaged the three toes.  Two of them don't look so bad, but one had quite a bit of dried blood and it looks like I may have done a little damage to the toenail, although nothing major.  I've bathed the foot, put some Neosporum on the cuts and rebandaged two of the toes - the third, the small toe, seems to be okay.

DH Richard and I have had a delightful day here in NYC.  We ventured out about 10:30 to the drugstore for meds for my allergy symptoms, went to box offices to get tickets for Les Miz for tonight and Inherit the Wind for tomorrow afternoon before meeting DR Elmore at Lincoln Center.  He took us to Toyland and helped me do some research on a great aunt and uncle who were in vaudeville, but I don't have enough info to work with (I'll have to get some details - like how to spell their last name - from my sister the genealogist).

Richard and I took the guided tour of Lincoln Center and then had late lunch/early dinner at Cafe Fiorello.  On our way home, we stopped at The Fantasticks box office and got great seats for Sunday evening.

Somewhere in there, I spoke on the phone with DR Vixmom, who's planning to come in Sunday afternoon.  Who's around then and what can we do that's not too strenuous?  Any ideas, DR Jose?  DR Elmore?  Are the Upper West Side bakeries open on Sunday afternoon?

It too a bit longer than usual to drive through town this afternoon.  From the Ashland Daily Tidings:

A bomb threat in Lithia Park forced the cancellation of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s afternoon performance of “On The Razzle” today.

Oregon Shakespeare Festival first delayed the play hoping to start by 2:30 p.m, according to Amy Richard, media relations and audience development manager. The ongoing delay led to its eventual cancellation, though as of 3 p.m. Richard said the festival expected its evening performances to start at 8:30 p.m. as scheduled. Richard said all tickets will be refunded from the cancelled play, though theatergoers could opt to swap the tickets for another play or receive a voucher for sometime in the future.

Ashland Police Department evacuated Lithia Park and much of the Plaza during a bomb scare around 1:15 p.m. today. Officers directed traffic away from a suspicious device at the base of the Lincoln Stature.

“We’ve got a bomb threat and until we can determine whether it’s a hoax or not, we are closing down the area,” APD Sgt. Theresa Selby said. By 1:30 p.m., police expanded the area of evacuation from the area immediately surrounding the Lincoln Statue and roped off the entire Plaza.

Some businesses, City of Ashland offices and Oregon Shakespeare offices are also reportedly evacuated as of this time.

“We are not sure at this time if there is a threat, but we are taking every precaution,” an APD press release stated. APD officials said the device had a timer and the words, “This is a hoax,” written on it. As of 2:30 all Plaza businesses were shut down by Ashland Police officers, in a forced evacuation of anyone within 300 feet of the Lincoln statue.

Originally the “hot zone” as police refer to the cordoned off area was set at 200 feet. Police have not yet said why they expanded the hot zone area. The Oregon State Police’s Bomb Squad was called to Ashland, police said, and are expected on the scene at anytime. Advertisement:

Anybody who'd eat a product called "Veggie Booty Snack" deserves an unhappy outcome!

Actually, I like Veggie Booty, and its predecessor, Pirate's Booty. It's sort of like eating styrofoam peanuts covered in parmesan cheese, but healthier that your standard cheesey puffs. And pretty tasty, despite its unfortunate name.

People who have recently eaten Veggie Booty and who have experienced any possible symptoms of salmonella infection — including abdominal cramps, fever, and diarrhea (which may be bloody) — should contact a doctor or other health care provider immediately and report the illness to state or local health authorities, notes the FDA.

Salmonella symptoms usually begin within one to four days after exposure to the bacteria. Most people don't develop severe illness, but salmonella can invade the bloodstream and cause life-threatening infections, especially in infants and people with health problems or weak immune systems.

I started to watch Queen From Outer Space, and fell asleep within fifteen seconds.  I woke up ten minutes later.  The transfer, which I'd read had "muted" colors (as par for the course with Warners) is actually pretty good and, as usual, these Internet "reviewers" simply know nothing about color.  When Warners does do one of their crappy brown transfers, these self-same experts tell us that the colors are great.

Today Sherlock is 11 months old.  I need to take a new photo of him.  Since he doesn't fit on the step anymore I'll have to find a new background for the photo. ;D

Well, guess what?  Today is Blanche's first birthday!

I just finished the 3rd Kritzer book. I had started it a while ago but I haven't had much book time lately.

I loved it, and was very amazed at how many experiences I shared with young Benjamin when I was in high school, including discovering Dave Brubeck, favorite soundtracks, songwriting (mine weren't as good!) and musical theatre.

The decription of seeing STOP THE WORLD and the girls in their colored tights made me laugh and brought back memories. This was the only show I ever did---community theatre my last year of college.

That's me on the far left, in the red. (Of course!) My friend and roommate was also in the show. We had a wonderful director, a friend of mine from college who talked me into doing the show. Everyone adored him. He died tragically and unnecessarily the year after we did the show.

So I'm thinking back fondly tonight to how much fun we had in the theatre, and wishing DR George and Cason leg-breaking vibes!

Last night DR Jane posted

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I wonder if Cilla is out painting the town.

Actually Jane, I was out painting a Mardi Gras float!  They worked on the floats all night. I painted until 1:00 AM. Pretty strange to paint in the dark, but I wasn't doing details so it worked out and still looked goog this morning.  I was exhausted today. I got up very early had breakfast then checked out the floats. I came home to change to go help again, laid down and woke up about 1:15 PM

This afternoon, I went to the grocery store. on the way home my gallon jug of milk fell over in the back of the car and started pouring milk all over!!! Yikes! I didn't notive until I got home. So I went back to the store, they replaced the milk and I went to the carwash and powerwashed all the mats.  They are outside drying. I may move them into the garage for the night.   I hope I got it, but I have a feeling that I may be smelling something sour tomorrow...yuck!

I'll post some photos of the floats later, they looked cool. The shape etc was taken from photos of the floats from Lake Charles, LA. The designs by Mark and Paul. These floats even had port-a-potties on them!

DR Cillaliz, please don't cry!

I had a similar experience with a smelly car. I was caught in a flash flood, and even though my car floated, (it was a little Tercel) it still got very damp inside. And in the summer, of course, so when it got hot out the windows steamed up on hte inside and it was like a terrarium, even with the windows cracked open. And it smelled like a swamp!

For the first time I think ever, they are not going to paint the water tower during Saturday In the Park.   I had already decided I wasn't going to help this year, but I'm glad I don't have to make that decision.  It will be fun to just come and go and enjoy the day and the celebration.

Here's a link to the membership info.  http://www.nymf.org/Page-104.html   It may be worth some of us splitting the membership fee to get the tickets we want.  Just a thought

What a captivating ghost story/mystery/allegory/social satire, and made for a mere $50,000 in 1962! Simply amazing black and white cinematography and open to so many different interpretations.

I thought the color was a bit erratic on QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE. Much of it looked just fine, but there were some faded scenes. Joi Lansing's costume is a green gown with red sequined gloves (a weird combination under any circumstances), and our first look at this is breathtakingly vivid. When we go back to another shot of her later, it's faded, a bit brown, and soft.

But most of it looks more than acceptable.

I'm just in from seeing the Pittsburgh CLO's production of OKLAHOMA!  To my surprise, it was very well directed & choreographed, and above all - NEVER boring.
The use of Shirley Jones as Aunt Eller borders on genius, to have Matt Bogart's Curly sing "Surrey With The Fringe on Top" almost entirely to her, while Laurie daydreams on the opposite side of the stage, WAS total genius.
URINETOWN's Jennifer Cody is by far the best Ado Annie I have ever seen, and I'm looking forward to meeting her dear husband on Sunday afternoon following the final performance.
What can I say about Jason Graae that hasn't already been said here?  His Ali Hakim was a delight, and crowd pleaser, from horn to hoof.
There's just something surreal about seeing Jones as Aunt Eller, with a brunette Laurie who looks remarkably like the youthful Shirley Jones.
After the show, BK's ears should have been burning, as Jason and I were talking about BK's own connection with Shirley Jones.

The Happy Days auditions I played this morning were fun and "informative".  And, yes, fun.  It was a dance call, and let's just say a few of the people called this morning should probably take the dance credits off their resumes.  ;)

And then on the way out of Ripley-Grier, I ran into a dear friend of mine from DC who has spent the past two years in San Diego as UCSD getting his Master's.  He's literally been back in the City for two weeks, and he was running in for an audition.  And then it also happened that he had got called in for another audition on Monday, and had been calling around for a pianist to work with for a half hour just to record some music for him.  Well...  So, after lunch with the gang, I headed back to R-G, and we had a great coaching and catch-up session.  And in the words of DR MusicGuy - who happened to see him too - he's very "pretty".   :)

And then when I headed back up to R-G with my friend from DC, I happened to run into another dear, dear friend whom I haven't seen in about 15 years(!).  He's a great actor/singer, and I've seen his name on various cast lists, but in all my time in NYC, I've never run into him.  Until today!  And it also turns out the girl he was dating in college - another dear friend of mine - is now his wife, and they've been married for eight years!  We made plans to get together sometime next week for dinner.  I can't wait!

As for lunch with the gang...  After meeting up at The Little Pie Shop, we ended up heading across the street to La Madeleine, which turned out to be a very good French bistro.  DR MusicGuy had the Hangar Steak.  DR MBarnum had the Duck Salad - his first time having duck!  DR Jason has the Chicken Breast with Ratatouille.  I had the "Heritage" Pork Burger - which was amazingly delicious!  And DR FJL had the Bistro Burger.

YUM! YUM YUM! YUM! YUM!

DISH! DISH! DISH! DISH! DISH!  *And, I'm not talking about the table settings.  ;)

After a dinner at Angus McIndoe, DR MusicGuy and I headed over to see A Chorus Line - Thank You, Baayork!

It really was a wonderful show tonight.  A good receptive audience, and some wonderful portrayals on stage.  This is my second time seeing this revival from the audience, and I have to say, I liked it so much better this time.  The show just really seems to have found its rhythm, its life over the past couple of months.  -And there were even six people out tonight!  -Which made for some interesting "casting": no Butch tonight (a.k.a. Boy with Headband), only one boy not picked after the opening, and a Caucasian Richie - who was actually quite good - although, I did miss the "joke" in his introduction).

Jason Tam was particularly touching tonight during his Paul monologue, and Joey Dudding (another understudy) was a wonderful Mark.  And after the show...
