Title: WORDS, WORDS, AND MORE WORDS
Post by: bk on January 28, 2006, 01:15:38 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've seen the words, words, and more words, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're doing the Texas Two-Step and can't be bothered right now.

And the word of the day is: TRACTION!

Welcome eight GUESTS!  We're talkin' about collectables.

Thank you to the DRs who recommended the very amusing "Shaun Of The Dead". (Rodzinski or Jed perhaps!).

I doubt if I have ever bought anything because it is collectable or that anything I have bought is now collectable. Just not my thing! About as interesting as the lives of "celebrities" to me.  Horses and all that.

I don't really see the 'traction in owning collectables or ebay for that matter!

Traction....remember posi-traction?  Your car had a brain, and if only one of the tires with power had traction and the other was spinning on ice or snow - ALL of the power of the car went to that ONE tire.

I thought it was collectIble....but what do I know?

Hmmm...the Courts line up sounded good to me, as well.  I am glad to hear that Mr Kerr and Ms Nuyen were looking so well.  I always thought that France Nuyen was one of the most beautiful women ever to appear in movies....especially in DIAMOND HEAD.

Dean Stockwell qnd Connie Stevens were supposed to be there as well.

Hmmm....collecti[a]bles...  Mostly I have photos, lobby cards, and posters that would NOT be of much interest to anyone except me....

But my favorite finds:

3-Sheet poster for COUNT THREE AND PRAY
Photograph of Frances Farmer autographed and sent to me when she was appearing on TV here in Indiana
Lots of Allison photos - and a couple of handwritten cards I received from her.
My most amazing find was a genuine FIRST EDITION of ATLAS SHRUGGED at the Half Price Bookstore in Greenwood, Indiana.  It was priced at $50 and I had a 30% coupon, so I purchased it for $35!  And I was making my purchases that day with a $100 gift certificate I won on a radio trivia contest - so it was really FREE!!

Good morning, all!  I'm not moving very energetically this morning and I slept quite late. Last night I had a wonderful visit with DR Ben and Anthony, catching up on all the gossip and seeing the photos of their Christmas vacation to Ireland and Cardiff.  They are quite wonderful hosts, and evening passed too quickly.

Today, I have few plans, so perhaps I'll finally tidy up this place and make another pass at getting my income tax receipts in order.  Charlotte wants to see TRISTAN AND ISOLDE tonight, so I need to ascertain where and what its showtimes are.

As for collectables... or is it collectibles?  In any case...

The only things that come to mind are some of my signed show cards, both from shows I've seen and been a part of.

Oh, I do have some teddy bears, but most of their value is sentimental rather than monetary.

DR Ron Pulliam - There are some other companies that make Dill Pickle Chips.  I believe Miss Vickie's should be available in SF.  -If they make Dill Pickle one - I like their Jalapeno variety.  In any case...

The Lay's one were/are a Limited Edition, usually released during the summer and fall - cookout time.  Utz - which I'm not sure ships that far west - has a pickle chip year-round.  -Utz is based in Pennsylvania, and they will only ship their products to nearby places in order to insure freshness.  However, that does not preclude someone sending you a few bags from the East (coast).  ;)

*My favorite Utz flavors are their Salt & Pepper and Crab (Old Bay) Chips.

Saturday greetings!  Today would be a work Saturday for me, but I took a vacation day to join my girlfriends for lunch and a tour of the stained glass studio/art gallery where DH Richard bought the painting he gave me for Christmas.

Hope it's as beautiful in Washington, DC, as it is here is SW Ohio, for DR Jason's visit to the National Zoo.

TOD -

1)  A cameo ring that my father's sister had made for me as a high school graduation present.  My grandfather (who I only met once) had given the cameo in a pendant to my grandmother (who died before my parents met) and my aunt had it reset into a ring by a jeweler that's still in business here in Cincinnati.

2)  A souvenir program book from my very first Broadway show, Cabaret, June 22, 1967.  It is signed by 4 of the 5 original cast members:  Joel Grey, Lotte Lenya, Bert Convy, Jack Gilford.  DH Richard and I went to Cincinnati's Music Hall 20 or so years later to see Joel Grey in a touring revival of Cabaret and I took the book along and had him sign it again.

Good morning from a newby!  I hope everyone's day is a great one.

Collectibles - Hmmm... a massive assortment of Star Wars books, figures, etc.  Nothing of extreme value, I don't think, but I do have a pretty cool audio set in a Millenium Falcon box of the first Timothy Zahn trilogy.

As for the word of the day, my first thought was, it's a good thing Bruce's daughter and her friend knew what they were doing with his back, or he could've ended up in traction for a month!   :o

Bruce, I'm heading down that way to bring my sister and my best friend to see Deceit tonight, so hopefully I'll get to say hello to you!  Plus, I've been given the assignment of bringing Matt his birthday wishes and finding out whether he liked his delivery yesterday.

Well, my favourite collectibles, of course, are my books...which are going up on the shelves quite nicely.  But even once I get the bookcases built in my office, I doubt I'll have enough space...and not much room to expand.  Which is probably good.  It is probably God's way of telling me I have too many books, which is probably true.  As they come out of boxes, I am being ruthless and considering, "Now why did I buy this and will I ever get around to reading it?"  I went a bit wild in the mid-nineties and I think I bought some stuff just on a binge that I don't really need.  I can cull without missing some of this stuff at all.  I've come to the decision that the book space I now have is the space I have and everything must fit or be gotten rid of.

However, there is the other side of me that says: "I never regret a book I bought; only a book I didn't buy."

I put my theatre books out last night and was amazed at how much I had, frankly.  It covers half a wall.  Of course, the 26-inch Television and its attended machines (cable box, vcr/dvd player/recorder) does take up some of that space, but I kept opening boxes last night, going:"Oh, no, another theatre box.  I thought I had them all."

Some notable gems from the collection are:

First edition Tarzan of the Apes.

Tarzan at the Earth's Core signed by Johnny "Tarzan" Weissmuller.  A librarian I knew gave me this book from her childhood collection, just because she knew I collected them.

A twice-signed Rider Haggard novel, inscribed to John Hays Hammond, who was some American notable.

A letter written and signed by Haggard sending regrets to a magazine editor, telling him that he is too swamped to write anything for him.  The story he mentions that he has currently being serialized is "SHE", though he doesn't mention it by name.  She is my favourite novel.

I have several signed novels and one letter tipped into a novel by P.C. Wren, the author of Beau Geste.

A couple of signed novels by Rafael Sabatini.

Many personally inscribed novels to me from Harlan Ellison.

Outside of books, I have two complete jigsaw puzzles of KING KONG from its original release that were my father's and he gave me.  They are still in their original paper envelopes.

I have some wonderful movie posters, notably: Gunga Din (about seven foot by three foot wide) and The Scarlet Claw (81" x 80").

I have original theatre programmes for John Barrymore's Hamlet; a 1800's stage production of SHE; the ill-fated stage production of BEAU GESTE that starred Laurence Olivier (and a young Jack Hawkins); The programme for the first production of the National Theatre when it began in the Old Vic -- HAMLET, starring Peter O'Toole and directed by Laurence Olivier.

But probably the best find I ever had was shortly before I moved.  I was walking Tewkes around the neighbourhood one night.  The dog stopped to hoist his leg on something in a desolate spot right off the road; I stopped him because it wasn't a
bush.  It was an original Tiffany Lamp with its shade.  I took it home...no easy task juggling a dog on a leash as the shade was delicate and the lamp base very heavy.  But I got it back in one piece.  Except for a few tiny spots on the lamp shade where the metal mesh trim is poppping up, it was in immaculate condition and it works.  It must be worth thousands of dollars.

The curious thing is why it was left by the side of the road in our neighbourhood.  I kept thinking did someone have a fight with their spouse and dump the thing out of spite?  Was some thief  on the run and stashing the loot?  I looked for signs in the neighbourhood to see if anyone had lost it.  But nothing.  The best kind of find.  Absolutely free!

TOD:
I collect: orchestra, opera, ballet, operetta and musical theatre scores
musical theatre books, libretti, histories, bios
             souvenir programs, occasional playbills

Because of the BABES IN TOYLAND project, I've been collecting ephemera on the original production; photos never turn up, but I have a beautful program from the original production at the Majestic Theatre in New York at Columbus Circle which I will give to the NYPL Theatre Collection since all their original programs have turned to dust.  I also have three programs from the Chicago Grand Opera House, where the show began in 1903; two programs are from the original summer run of 1903 and one from the September 1904 return tour.  I've also got programs for BABES from the St Louis Muny, a disco production by the Weisslers, a California rewrite by Toby Bluth, a 1929 Broadway revival, a few other places, and I'm still collecting.  Through eBay, I've managed to find all three editions of the early vocal scores for BABES, a few 1903-1904 newspaper clippings, and a great Jan-June 1905 theatre scrapbook of New York entertainment covering opera, theatre, vaudeville, etc. with great clippngs and photos.

I also look out for other memorabilia on Victor Herbert, Jerome Kern, and actors and staff for all the shows the project I'm on is researching.

Good morning all!

I hope everyone is doing well.

Today I go to see Wicked at the TBPAC.  I’ll have a report when I return.

I forgot that today is also the day of the big Gasparillia Parade. That’s when the pirates invade Tampa.  I hope I’m not going to have to hard of a time with parking.

Collectibles?  I used to collect the Bryer horse figures because (like most teenage girls), I was horse crazy.  I played with them like dolls.  My horses all had names and families, etc.

I’ve been meaning to tell you all that I broke down and brought some of the Campbells Select Gold Label soups.  The Mushroom, Butternut Squash and the Italian Tomato with Basil & Garlic.  How were they?  Well, in a word:  Y U C K!!!!   :-X

Both Mom and I would much rather have the regular old soup in a can variety.

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]SPOILER ALERT:     Dancing with the Stars[/move]

I’m so glad that P is finely gone.  The final nail in the coffin was when they said he was only putting in 20 hours a week when the other were doing over 60.  I don’t think he really wanted to do the show and it was relief both to him and his partner be finely be off the hook.

I also think that George will be the next to go.

Could someone with MSN and AOL experience explain somethin' to a dunderhead like moi, please?  I have already figured out that everything on MSN is web-based, so if I go to Mail, it doesn't open in a little window like on AOL, and that I then need to hit the back button to get back to where I was, etc.. as opposed to AOL, where one can simply close the mail window.

However, both AOL and MSN have the little "URL menu window" at top.  On AOL, it saves everyplace you've been.  For some reason, sometimes on MSN where I've been is in the history, at other times, not.  For instance, in perusing yesterday's HHW's posts, it kept defaulting to page 6, even though I had repeatedly looked at page 8.  Now it's no biggie, especially with our handy-dandy new DSL, but the "logic" behind this is eluding me.  Shouldn't it show every URL I've visited?

TOD:  well of course, despite Wikipedia's "experts"' arguments to the contrary, I have what is generally regarded as the largest Farmer Archive on the planet, and probably the coolest thing I have is Frances' 1935 passport to the Soviet Union and other environs.  She used it to go several other places that have never been generally reported up through the 1940s.  Evidently when she was committed, her agent, upon legal advice, ripped the thing to prevent it being used again, but it's still in amazingly good shape, with one of the most intense photos of a young Frances Farmer you've ever seen.

I'm up, I'm up, and I've already learned that I am an insufferable bore.  How did I learn this?  Because I received an e-mail this morning through this very site, and the e-mail said and I quote - "Why are you such an insufferable bore?"  This e-mail was, of course, not signed.  I think an equally interesting question would be "Why do you read this site if you find its proprietor an insufferable bore?"  Wouldn't that mean that the anonymous person who wrote the e-mail is an insufferable twit?  In any case, I think one hasn't achieved anything if he/she can't be called an insufferable bore by an insufferable twit every now and then.

More MSN mystery:  it's happening again.  Obviously I've been here today, but when I looked at the history in the URL window, all that was there were two URLs from yesterday, page 4 and page 6.  Nothing from today.  I had to continually hit the back button to get back here.  Is this just the way MSN works?  Enquiring minds want to know......

Well now I guess we know two people who don't read my posts.   ;D

And with the recent Supreme Court ruling in favor of Oregon, we can simply bring said twit here and indulge in some extremely assisted suicide.   ;D

One last MSN vs. AOL anomaly:  on AOL in the URL history, the day's HHW posts are by title (e.g., today it would say WORDS, WORDS, etc.).  On MSN, it's only a URL, with the thread ID (e.g., today is 912).  Weird.

Yesterday, DearReader Laura asked how things are going for Peggy.

I'm very glad to say that der Brucer will be taking her to her new family today.  I'll be at work when this happens, so I won't have a teary goodbye, just a farewell hug just before I go out the door.  We really feel good about this match, as does the family.

We may not have much time to reflect on her being gone, however.  The Dalmatian Rescue Group that matched us with Fletcher has intervened with a puppy mill.  Der B and I still aren't sure how many Dal pups were rescued, just that they are all malnourished and abused.  So, we just may have the patter of little paws in our house again, along with the pack that already shares their lives with us.

I do not understand the rationale for hateful words leveled at someone for being himself. No one is forced to come here or read what anyone has to say, so that anonymous e-mail writer seems to have tremendous psychological problems that the pen name only hints at (and is probably the antithesis of at least in the physical sense).

My response to BgDkUWS@aol.com:

Thank you for your query.   I think an equally interesting question would be, "Why do you read a website when you find its proprietor an insufferable bore?"  Doesn't that make you an insufferable twit for doing so?  I think an equally interesting question would be, "Why don't you have the courage of your convictions and sign your name, rather than just being insufferably anonymous?  But, it's much easier to write these pithy e-mails anonymously, isn't it?  That's the Internet for you.

I passed on your comment to my readers, several of them wish to write you.  So I'll just pass on your insufferable e-mail address to them.

Thanks for writing, and do keep enjoying the site.  I give you my word that I will continue to strive to be the best insufferable bore that I can be.  I wouldn't want to let you down.

TOD:

I used to collect a lot of different stuff--toys, books, LPs, musical theatre memorabilia, but not as much anymore.  For one thing, there's not much room left to display things.  And for another, I have to say that, as much as I love eBay, it's sort of taken away the thrill of the chase and the celebration of the find for me.  It's more rare than not that I look for something on the site and it's not being offered by someone in some sort of condition or other.  Just about everything is obtainable, depending on how vigilant you are and how much you are willing to pay.

But I am still grateful for eBay.  It was there that I found my most cherished collectible--the Tony Award medallion won by Alexis Smith for FOLLIES.

I wasn't quite sure what to make of the "BgdK" that Bruce first mentioned.

Then, seeing the address with the capital "D" told me all I needed to know...it's someone with very low self-esteem overcompensating with the "BgDk" nomenclature.

Sad, that.

And still deliriously funny that he thinks people might believe it.

Collectibles:

Theatrical window cards, my most prized of which are "Mack and Mabel, " "DreamGirls" and "A Little Night Music" (all originals in near-mint condition).

Movie posters, my most prized being linen-backed one-sheets of "Mutiny on the Bounty," "Demetrius and the Gladiators", and "The Egyptian", plus the British quad of "Cleopatra" and the half sheet of "There's No Business Like Show Business."

I also collect lobby cards -- full sets on some movie titles, but title cards on most.  I also collect still sets...having to build them from individual still sales on eBay is the fun of it!!

I have numerous autographed stills, and signatures on things such as hotel registers, checks, etc.  My main target is film composers, many of which are autographed copies of books (Mancini, Tiomkin), signed contracts (Hugo Friedhofer, Jerome Moross, Lionel Newman), and photos of composers conducting their music.

I truly don't have room to store these treasures, but I have them and much, much more...and cannot imagine what will become of them should I drop dead!

I’m so glad that P is finely gone.  The final nail in the coffin was when they said he was only putting in 20 hours a week when the other were doing over 60.
I also think that George will be the next to go.

DR Danise, the host said P had done 20 HOURS TOTAL IN THE 5 WEEKS.  20 hours per week would have been good. She said he had done 20 hours total while the others had done 130 hours.

I was really happy too.  But I think the show manipulated the audience into voting him out.  But I don't mind!

I also look out for other memorabilia on Victor Herbert, Jerome Kern, and actors and staff for all the shows the project I'm on is researching.

elmore3003, I always forget, was it the 1903 or the 1904 production of BABES IN TOYLAND the first one you attended?

I am wary aobut seeing the movie after seeing the rendition from the early 80s that had Kate Mulgrew as Icolde. Then on the other hand the modern version for the legend might be fun to see.

Just had an discussion with a friend concerning  this interpretation of the Celtic legend...

I have many items that would be considered collectables, that are quite precious to me, if not anyone else.

I have lots of nifty novelty salt and pepper shakers from the 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s...and then there is my collection of June Kenney memorablia.

Probably my best buy was an autographed show pamphlet from Joi Lansing's nightclub program in the 1960s. Her autograph is not easy to find...and actually I have never seen it offered before.

Throughout the 1990s I wrote to many vintage celebrities and sent photos for them to autograph. Many came back signed, some with wonderful letters...many from people who are long gone now such as Myrna Loy, Fay Wray, Lillian Gish.

I have not really ever bought something just because it was collectable...only because I enjoyed it.

It gives me a place to focus all my anger and rage on.  It should be retitled "40 egocentric idiots in a room shouting about nothing," and the writing is so pathetic that every character changes moods, attitudes, mentality and sex at the writers' whims.  While I find the supernatural elements quite funny (Charity's closet being the door to hell, for instance), I find it's Catholic mentality in a fictional town founded by puritan immigrants from the 17th Century who probably left England to avoid the Catholic Church and it's refusal to face much late 20th Century reality (the "Big boss" running a city through his corruption to a leading lady - so utterly demented as a stalker and would-be killer - roaming around free of asylum, prison or straightjacket) out of touch.  It's also the gayest show on tv:  several of the women act like drag queens in heat.  I catch it about twice a week, and it amazes me by its utter stupidity.  I can't tell if it's the writing, the bad acting, the bad facelifts, or if it's deliberately designed to be off-kilter.  I suspect it's the bad writing.

(((((((ELMOOOREE)))))))))))))))))

I could not agree more with you. I have read better written fanfcition than what Reilly has written. A soap opera is a character driven story that focuses on family, angst, romance, mystery and adventure....

No plot gimmicks as this man likes to write, no viewer payback. Elmoore, they even had an orangutan at one time on the show.

What Reilly has done to Days is deplorable. It was once a relatively well written show back in the late 80s and 90s but Langan and Reilly have contributed to the demise of the show. Days had a demonic possession storyline back in the 90s.

I actually feel sorry for the actors that have to act this trash....

I received a response from BgDkUWS.  He told me he doesn't read the site and only came here for the e-mail address.  He says he e-mailed me because of my 3000-somethingist arrogant post on All That Chat.  I went over and looked at my recent two postings, neither of which I would categorize as "arrogant".  I told him if he wanted to have a serious chat about what his deal is that I'd be happy to oblige.  I suspect that won't be happening (and do we not really think he's reading this right now?).  I now know that he's one of two people who continually come after me any time I post factual information on ATC.  He also said that since I'd made his e-mail public, he was going to make mine available to "his" readers - so it's either datalounge or this really reprehensible and inane knockoff of ATC called That's All Chat.  As I said, it's all these broadwayworld guys who got annoyed with me at the time Juliana was posting her journal and they were deriding it mercilessly - I had the bad form to stick up for a friend of mine.  Terrible that.

At least we know who were playing with now.  And I'm jiggy with that.

Had a tiny chat with Mr. Chamberlain - told him I knew Jack Lee (his musical director on My Fair Lady), and that we'd almost recorded the revival.  He seemed almost automaton-like, but that's how it gets at these shows sometimes.  I bought his book.  He had no line today at all (the line had moved to Mr. Tab Hunter).  Mr. Chamberlain was probably the most expensive celeb there - thirty bucks for ANY autograph, whether on a photo, or anything that the people brought.  One guy had about ten things with him, so he spent a cool three hundred.   They charged forty for the book - a softcover.

I've been back about an hour from my lovely afternoon at Beau Verre/Riordan Studios (http://www.beauverre.net).  They do beautiful stained glass work and have refurbished a rundown corner building (the G. C. Murphy store, DR elmore) in downtown Middletown.  Unfortunately, the place across the street where we'd planned to have lunch was closed, so we ended up having sandwiches at Quiznos.

Stephanie we have autographed Star Trek cards in a lovely frame with a photo of the Enterprise.

Jane, that is very cool.  Of course, I've always preferred Star Wars to Star Trek, but between my Dad and my husband, I've grown a fondness for Star Trek.  Not enough to show up dressed like a Vulcan at a convention, but I've enjoyed the shows.  Voyager was my favorite.  Couldn't get into Enterprise, though.  As much as I love Scott Bakula, he just wasn't enough to keep me interested in that series.

I'm sure he was happy to get it.  I'll say this: He was nibbling on its contents (fresh fruit) before the show, at intermission, and after the show.

I'm glad he got it and liked it.  I do hope he at least shared a little.  It's my understanding the thing was big enough to feed 15 to 20 people!   ;D

DRLaura, cauliflower and frosting is healthier than chips and frosting.  Hmmm what can you do to get Sandra to substitute the frosting for a healthier topping? ;D  Are you reading this Sandra? :)

Stephanie I know what you mean about Scott Bakula, such a shame.  When the show originally aired we couldn’t receive it on a station with a decent picture.  Lately we have been watching re-runs.  I’m not so sure it was Scott as much as the writing or the rest of the cast.

Do not read if you didn't watch this week's episode of SMALLVILLE.

DR MattH, I started reading your SMALLVILLE review, but stopped after the words "sad".  You should have put spoiler space but luckily i stopped reading quickly.

At my sister's house last night my dad was like "did you see smallville ... the death" and i screamed out "DO NOT TALK ABOUT THIS I DID NOT WATCH IT Y ET".  And my sis was like, "it was all over the news that this would happen".  I had no idea.  And I watch most previews and hear about things.

At least I don't know who died. Although I'm guessing it's not lois, or his parents, or lex. :)  Anyhow no harm done. But my dad is notorious for blabbing things.  Even when i scream out "stop talking!" he still continues on!

Going to watch Veronica Mars now.

I really am surprised, DR Jennifer, that you did not know that on the 100th episode (this week's installment) one of the people closest to Clark (i.e. someone from the opening credits) was going to die. It's been in newspaper reports literally for months so how you could have escaped noticing or hearing about it (not who but just that something tragic was going to happen) simply astonishes me. I revealed nothing about the identity of the person and don't think a spoiler was necessary with all of the publicity this episode had generated LONG before it aired.

And even with the death, there is a serious twist NO ONE could have predicted was coming. So I spoiled nothing really, at least in my estimation.

Hi all, well I knew the day was coming when I would get totally stressed out and melt down over this move and it happened today.  I got extremely irritated at a friend who is always there to have me pay for things for him and who is now insisting over and over that I need to spend extra money for quality on a rug of all things even though he knows I've pretty much hit the end of the budget for awhile- but he can't be bothered to help me pack, move or do anything else.  That and the overwhelming feeling that I'll never get all this packed and the feeling that it's easier to play on the computer than get anything done and the hour I spent searching everywhere for something I put where it belonged but didn't bother looking THERE I mean why would it be where it belongs, nothing else is at this point.

AHHHHHHH.......    So I haven't gotten a thing done today and that's just the way it is.  Hopefully tomorrow will be better. I think I'll just sit back and relax tonight. Maybe a hot bath and early to bed. Today was bound to happen. Now that it's over maybe I can get some work done

I didn't watch the beginning of the episode where they showed clips from past shows.  So I just watched it and now know who the blonde in the car is (Celeste Cain's housekeeper (or whatever's) daughter who veronica at one time thought was celeste's daughter.

I love this show because they require the viewer to think so much.  In fact there was one very important detail that I totally missed on this show.  I could not figure out why Veronica had her ATM used so the sheriff could go to mexico (so close to where duncan was). She is so thorough and that just didn't make sense to me.

I didn't realize that the waterbottles in the trunk meant that duncan had hidden there. And since the sheriff went right through the border crossing ... well that all makes sense now. I'm surprised i didn't pick up on this point!

When we got to the movie, TRISTAN AND ISOLDE was sold out, so we went to see Terrence Malick's THE NEW WORLD.  Charlotte was puzzled by its nonlinear structure and liesurely pace but I think she enjoyed it.  I found it quite beautiful and moving with gorgeous images and wonderful sequences.  I wasn't crazy about James Horner's score, which wasn't as irritating as Phillip Glass but not much better.  I don't think I've seen Colin Farrell in a film before, and I thought he was quite wonderful, but so were Christian Bale and the young actress whose name I cannot begin to spell.  Beautiful costumes and design, too.

Very respectful and they're played by Native-American actors.  I recommend it very highly.

Smoke Signals is a movie based on the book by Sherman Alexie. he is Couer d'Alene Indian and it is a fascinating read. Very well done and the cast is entirely Native American.

I also recommend Lakota Woman by Mary Crow Dog.

Through work I can take one class. I am fascinated by different cultures and I am taking a class on Native Ameriicans of the Plains.

Evening folks!

Well, I did go and see Wicked today.  My very honest opinion of it was that it was ok but lacked something.

Part of my problem was that I was blowing hot and cold on the performance of Kendra Kassebaum as Glinda.  I’d start to warm up to her and then I would have a problem with something else she did.

At first, I thought she was having mike problems because she sang so softly.  Then (IMHO) she kept missing music clues and rushed to put all of the words in at once.  Perhaps it was a different arrangement or interpretation of the music but I found it most annoying.

My overall impression (and I have no idea as to the age of the lady) was that she was too old for the role of Glinda.

Stephanie J. Block played Elphaba.  While she did a good job of it, I also noticed a lack of “punch” to key words in some of the songs.

I felt sorry for David Garrison.  When he made his first appearance as the Wizard, one or two people clapped then stopped.  Then a few more clapped.  A few others joined in with a rather uncertain “should we or shouldn’t we at this point” air.  By that time, he had been on stage for way past the normal time it would take to acknowledge someone with thunderous applause.  It would have been kinder, I think, to not clap at all.  I didn’t clap because I didn’t know him.

Still it was a pretty good show.  I don’t know if I would have enjoyed it more by not seeing the Broadway version first.

I’ve always held the opinion that the road shows we get here in Tampa are just as good if not better then the ones on Broadway. Now I’m not as sure.

Wicked
was the first Broadway show that I’ve seen in both places and I would have to honestly say that the Tampa show would rank second to the one I saw in NYC.

That’s one of the reasons I so wanted to see POTO in NY.  It would have been nice to compare the ones I’ve seen.  Although I don’t think anyone could be as bad as the first Phantom I saw.  I still get a chuckle out of that every time I think about it.

I had my usual shock at what some people wore to the theater.  Ratty jeans and t-shirts abounded.

As soon as the curtain dropped the ones next to me tried to make a bee line for the door.  I was at the end of row and stood quite solidly in their way.  They had to stay for the final bows.  When they passed me I made sure I said in voice loud enough to be heard, “This isn’t a movie.  You don’t run out during the credits.”  I got a nasty look and gave one in return.

My only other problem was that I wished I had someone with me to watch the show.  I had a nice chat with one of the theater volunteers but it would have been good to have someone I knew to talk to.

Part of what made Patience all the more enjoyable was having you, DR Elmore, there to share it with me.    :)

Ahh, well.

That was my day at the theater.

DR Jennifer, the news of the imminent death in SMALLVILLE was also in every newspaper description of the episode that I saw.

Truly, I'm very sorry if I spoiled anything for you, but never in my wildest dreams did I think it would be possible not to have been aware of that turn of events with all the PR in the network ads for the show as well in media on-line and in print. Astonishing that you could miss all of it for WEEKS before the event.

I spent a very nostalgic evening watching figure skating from decades gone by. Oh, such names of skaters that I had forgotten about came back to me as I watched performances long since past.

And it was sad seeing wonderful skaters like Canada's Brian Pokar who are no longer with us.

Loved the first two seasons of ENTERPRISE. Hated the third season. Liked about half of the fourth (last) season, but the finale episode has to rank as THE WORST finale in the history of the STAR TREK franchise.

I must have misheard what they said --I only caught the 20 part.  No wonder why he did so poorly!  Again, I have nothing against him.  It was nice of him to step in for his son BUT if your going to do something--do it.

My favorite collectible is a program from the original produciton of ARSENIC AND OLD LACE.   Also the program from the Paul Newman-Joanne Woodward Broadway show BABY WANT A KISS,

My favorite find was finally getting a Last Starfighter movie lunchbox and thermos that were in good condition.  Someone was selling off the thermos in a collection of four thermoses and I had to buy all four to get the one that I wanted, but I enjoyed finally getting one.

BK, it sort of make sense that AFTER THE BALL would be the top seller so far.  It came off the Irish Rep production which had lots of first-class off-Broadway push behind it and of course was a must-have for the Noel Coward fans and quite a few of the many many people who saw the show.  Indeed, I think yopur AFTER THE BALL is a better CD than at least three of the CD's that ended up being up for the show album Grammy this year, which I believe were nominated because they had "sexier" and more current titles.  Your AFTER THE BALL CD is a glorious rendering of a glorious work, which deservedly caught the attention of the reviewers and happily got their deserved praise.

Having said that, it's possible that LAST STARFIGHTER has just begun in its sales potential.  It's only been in Tower Lincoln Center for a few weeks at this point which must have affected pre-Christmas sales, there were problems which I know were upsetting all of us for a long time in the period leading up to  Christmas re the Amazon page, and it didn't have the attendant push that came with the publicity for the advent of Kritzerland.  And we haven't yet had any productions on the visibility level of Irish Rep's AFTER THE BALL.  (And of course while the limited press we've gotten has been cherce, we somehow haven't been as widely reviewed in the mainstream press.)

Also wondering are you including sales by the Irish Rep in their lobby, etc?  I haven't gotten numbers yet on how many the Storm Theatre has "sold" in exchange for donations, but it could be a relatively significant amount, so please let me know if that gets counted.

Back from a terrific performance.  Completely sold out house, and had to add five chairs in the back.  First act went perfectly, second act a bit less so thanks to my actor who just can't be consistent.  He was fine, but screwed up a new bit I gave Tammy last night that had gotten a huge laugh - he changed a look, something he's NEVER done before EVER - go know.  Consistency - that's all I want and all I need.  Still, a show that landed just about every laugh, which was really fun.  More in the notes, but I have to eat now, as I haven't eaten all day.

T.O.D.

The majority of my collectibles (or collectables) are associated with my interest in the RMS Titanic and with my visit to the site of the wreck.  My two favorites are:

My signed and numbered print of THE GRAND STAIRCASE by Larry S. Johnson, whcih is my pride and joy.  It is not only signed by the artist, but was also signed by one of the last remaining survivors of the Titanic, Eleanor Johnson Schuman.

My two sets of Titanic First Class china desinged and manufactured exclusively for the 1996 Expedition to the wreck site.

I also have a program from the national touring company of ONCE UPON A MATTRESS back in, I believe, 1958; signed by Imogene Coca, King Donovan, and Edward Evert Horton.

A lot of autographed photos from celebrities such as: Barbra Streisand, Angela Lansbury, Andtonio Banderas, and, of course, the WSMA Brent Barrett.

But my real treasure is an autographed copy of WRITER'S BLOCK.

I have not really ever bought something just because it was collectable...only because I enjoyed it.

That's what I love to see on "Antiques Roadshow," the stories of people getting what they want because they like it and not buying it to store away in "perfect" condition for resale later.  I love the stories that people tell.  That's what makes the collecting (and collections) truly interesting, the histories behind it all. :)

I collect keychains/keyrings.  I don't have anything that's worth any money, but I have a lot that were given to me by co-workers who've travelled.  When I was in college, for my 21st birthday, my suitemates threw me a party (I had to buy the keg, though).  On the invitations it said that presents weren't required, but keychains would be preferred.  I got quite a few, and several that were homemade.  It was one of the best b-day parties that I ever had.  Most of my keychains are in boxes in my extra bedroom, but I have some in my office at work.  Eventually, I want to unpack said boxes, get rid of a LOT of stuff that I no longer need, hopefully find things that I know I have but have no idea where they are and get all of my keychains together in one place.  When I someday buy my own place (right now, I'm renting a house from my sister), I plan on putting ALL the keychains in one room...all over the walls...someday. :D

Is this a slow news day here at haineshisway.com?  I just gained back use of my handy-dandy laptop.  A former girlfriend of Mr. Mark Bakalor was here today - she's living in LA and I hired her to import the e-mail addresses of everyone who's purchased Kritzerland CDs, so that I can do proper e-mail blasts when we have new releases (a couple of new releases coming soon).  She also tallied sales on all the CDs.  Best seller?  After the Ball.

Congratulations!  I hope Mr. Guy Haines isn't jealous. ;)

I mailed my tax return a week ago Wednesday (on the 18th).  I'm still waiting for my refund.  I've only ever done 1040EZ and I've never had to pay.  I don't know when the refund will be deposited into my bank account, but I'll be celebrating when I do!  It should come sometime soon.  Also, (I've said this before but) next week I'm making my absolute last credit card payment!  I'll be completely debt free!  So that, paired with the income tax refund, I'll really be celebrating...for a short while, anyway.  I have to get my car serviced and I want to buy a few things that I actually need before I go hog wild and spend it frivolously. ;D

As for actual "collectibles" that I might have, I actually took it to a taping of "Antiques Roadshow" a year and a half ago.  It's a limited edition, numbered (set 1000 of 1000) collection of every different song that Stephen C. Foster wrote, called "Foster Hall Reproductions," that was put together in 1933.  It's a pretty specialized item and the appraiser totally guessed on its value.

Because of that, the Pacific Northwest contingent of HHW had our very first meeting!  JMK (and his lovely wife Betsy), Jane, MBarnum and I all met in person at JMK's house in Portland, which is where "Antiques Roadshow" was taping!  My music wasn't appraised on camera (darn) but I can be seen for about three seconds behind an appraisal of a big blue bowl.  I'm wearing a tie-dyed t-shirt and a green Hawaiian shirt over that.  I wanted to be easily spottable! ;)
