Good morning, all! I don't have a lot planned today beyond my walk, the NYPL, and THE MOST HAPPY FELLA scores.  One of my colleagues on the BABES IN TOyLAND project has let another priority take over his life for the nonce, and several people, including myself, are on hold because of it. Frankly, at this point I'm a bit pissed. I have scores to send out, things to plan, and I know that when his current project ceases, I'll be pressured for my time from him. He's a good friend and I wish him well, but he could have spared me at least a couple of hours in the past two weeks to help me accomplish some things.

Thursday morning greetings!  It's foggy this morning in SW Ohio and one of the presidential candidates is having a rally at 5/3 Field at 11am.  That venue, home of the Dayton Dragons, is about 2 blocks from the library.  Many library employees (including moi) rent spaces in a privately-owned parking lot that's very convenient to the stadium.  Two staff members from the company that owns our lot were out there making sure that rally attendees were not taking our spaces, for which I thanked them profusely.  Of course, they were also offering unrented spaces for $5 apiece  ;)

Interesting thing about my doctor's visit yesterday--he wanted to give me a booster inoculation shot for tetnus, diphtheria and whooping cough.  Evidently, the immunization from the shots we late baby boomers got when we were kiddies is wearing off and we all need to be revaccinated.

My doctor was already out of flu vaccine, but I'll be getting my shot here at work anyway during the next month.

And hopefully, I'll get the results of my blood test by tomorrow.  I'll have to call to get the results if I want to hear it--my doctor's office never calls back if it's good news.

I'm trying to figure out the source of this clip.  With all the edit cuts it doesn't really look like 60's network television (though it does have the sound of the 60's.)  Maybe it's Canadian or British?  Anyone have a guess?

It seems our host is a Madison Avenure dream consumer:

Airborne
Emergen-C
Cold-eez

all fancy packaging and marked-up prices for Vitamin supplements (Cold-eez throws in some zinc).

The most healthful aspect of using them is probably all the water you consume.

Well my television set is not working this morning.  It was fine last night.  The blue light comes on that it is ON....but now it won't turn off, and there is NO picture, and I can't bring up the little icon telling me which input to access....it is just ON.

I called service and they are sending me a prepaid BOX to send it away in.

But first I think I will unplug it and see if it resets itself.  Time will tell.

I wanted to tell VIXMOM my appliance hell story.  So here it is:

A couple weeks ago my oven wasn't heating properly. It's twenty years old and a built-in. I phoned GE. They could not tell me if they still make parts for my model (I REALLY think they ought to be able to tell me that!), but they could schedule a service call.  I checked the GE website and it appears that my model was discontinued. The new models are all somewhat wider. But it is a built-in and there's no extra space! It appeared that to replace it would mean modifying the cabintry, which I REALLY don't want to do at this point. Oy!!

The repairman, fortunately, says it can be fixed. He had to order the part and he should be installing it today. In the meantime, I did numerous web searches and learned that there's a model very similar to mine, which I think would fit the space, if today's repair doesn't work after all. Apparently, GE doesn't consider it the same model, but it's close enough for me.

I am very relieved, but I know from experience that it's not over till it's over.

Re:  Last night's "Project Runway"

SPOILAGE

I think the judges made the absolute right call last night.  Sometimes it's hard to separate the "body of work" the contestants did throughout the weeks of competition from what they're presenting as their "best" work at the end.  I don't know how much of the individual collections the judges have seen, but Jerrell's is very much in the same vein as his wedding dress...and even moreso, I think.  It's all well done, but it's unrelentingly overwrought, IMO.

Poor Korto didn't deliver a great wedding dress or bridesmaid outfit.  I can imagine, however, that she has cultural differences as to what bridal wear ought to be like, especially being from Liberia.  Everyone in the world does not embrace the traditional wedding dress ideal that Leanne presented.  Her dress was way beautiful, though.  I thought Kenley's was wonderful, as well.  It was odd, in a way, that Kenley's work resonated so well last night.  I got the feeling that she really "wants" to be one of the gang but that her ego-driven personality -- and defensiveness -- often are her worst enemy.  I felt bad for Jerrell, but I am relieved for Korto that she will be showing at Bryant Park.  I've seen all the collections, and I think Korto's is much better than Jerrell's.  But then what do I know about women's fashion?!!!?

Didier Deutsch, the producer of the new Sondheim box set, rushed into production after four years because some little label put out Evening Primrose, makes this astonishing statement in a USA Today story:

""Very few people have heard the incidental music from The Enclave," a 1973 play by Arthur Laurents."

Really?  Very interesting, since Sondheim fans have been hearing it since 1993 on Unsung Sondheim.  That album has sold upwards of 25,000 copies - I suppose in the scheme of things that's "very few" but in his "very few" I think we know Deutsch is talking about the Sondheim fan.

Mister Deutsch has been a moron in my opinion since around 1987 when he reviewed for Max Preeo's SHOW MUSIC the Book-of-the-Month Club's "Songs of New York" recording, which was my first commercial work, and panned it because all of the arrangements were so old-fashioned.  The conductor made it very clear in the recording's notes that each song was arranged to fit into the period of the song's composition, and in some cases the arrangements were recreations of their original commercial recordings.

bk - So... Emergen-C, Cold-Eze and Airborne... That's a LOT of Vitamin C all at once in your system.  No wonder you're bloated.  Yes, Vitamin C is good for you, and, yes, your body will just "eliminate" some of the extra stuff it takes in.  However, taking in too much Vitamin C all at once can also cause diarrhea-like conditions due to all that ascorbic acid in your stomach.  Just FYI.

So... Are you writing a Letter/E-mail to the Editor of USA Today?

DR RonPulliam - I believe DR Kerry's rather confusing "It' just a lot of short pos" was in response to DR JMK's query in regards to the A&M, Herb Alpert, Mafia story - which also appears in that post.

In any case, regardless of who or what it was in reference too, I still have no frell what "It' just a lot of short pos" means.  ;)

It means "It's just a lot of short posts".  And it was a direct response to Cillaliz's comment that 21,000 posts was a lot of typing.  Which, as a matter of fact, it was.

I'm baaaack.    I can't believe all the CD's I have that aren't all that good.  Some re-issues of obscure musicals are pretty bad.  A lot of talent involved, but they're awful.   Same with some of the lesser-known cabaret singers and revues.   What WERE they thinking?  If anyone has a desire to own any of these once I weed them out, they are yours for the asking!

Looking at this stuff, i can't believe how much money I spent on such things over the years.  Jeepers!  :-\

Really, DR Kerry?  Just a lot of short "pos"???

Whatever your personal opinion is of me, you have also passed a pissy value judgment on any number of posters here who have had milestones, taken pleasure from them and attained not a few of their number from "just a lot of short pos" [sic].

Thank you so much for killing some of the pleasure I felt in attaining the milestone and for being dismissive of it in response to another poster's congratulations.

I'll return the favor.

However, they are in the midst of "Shacktoberfest", so you could really splurge on a "German Chocolate Cake Concrete".  :)

Or you could also get their 'Shroom Burger"...

He rented a small plane at the airport and flew. I won't go up in small planes, so I began walking. After he landed he picked me up nine miles from the airport.

Simple.

Kerry understood.

It all makes sense now. I thought maybe you'd nagged him so much in the car that he drove you to the airport and dropped you off and you had to walk home. Speculations are endless.

The service dept is sending me a BIG BOX.   I am supposed to send the TV to them.  It will have a postpaid label on it UPS or FED EX....so we shall see.....  I did buy the two year warranty, so it should all be covered.

ANYWAY....I purchased a small 20" television set to watch in the meantime, but I have to take it back and exchange it because the bottom half of the screen is all purple.

My friend, Andy, just called me.  He was hoping to come up to NYC for a long weekend in November, however, after checking his portfolio and retirement account(s) this afternoon, he's thinking staying at home is probably a "better" option.  He's "lost" close to $10,000 over the past three days.  :-\

The work session went well.  I had them start at the top of the show, and do all the songs and patter, start to finish, without stopping.  Of course, we stopped a couple of times, but I saw that the flow of the show works just fine.  I then went back to the start and began giving pointers on performance, intention, mood - and I fixed a few things in the arrangements, really tiny stuff, and then I set the underscoring for the patter.  Then I went to the mail place, Gelson's, and am now finally home, deciding on what to watch this evening.

I'm making some chicken stroganoff without the rice or noodles.  Just chicken and the sauce - it's quite tasty and actually diet-friendly, since this is my meal o' the day.

Project runway question - not necessarily a spoiler, but to be on the safe side

So we've learned from the news media that six designers from Project Runway actually presented during Fashion Week at Bryant park.   Does that mean that these shows we've been seeing lately (like last night's, which I'm watching again now) actually were filmed after Fashion week?  So that when the person kicked off this week says strongly that their work will be seen - or something like that - they actually know they will be seen in Fashion Week, but as one of the Final 6 if not the Final 3?

Actually....

Possible spoiler possible spoiler possible spoiler I think it was actually five people who showed at Fashion Week - the four finalists and Suede.  All the interviews were done right after they were eliminated, before Fashion Week. However, since it's become sort of an open secret and protocol for more than just the finalists to show at Fashion Week, I think that the final group of contestants know that they're going to get to show regardless.  They show "extra" collections in order to throw the audience off.  So, there have been leaks about who was 'shown', but no one really knew who was in the finals.  As for people saying that "they will be seen", I think they're just stating that someday they will have a showing at Bryant Park.  -In fact, there have been a couple of former contestants who have shown at Fashion Week since appearing on the show. End of possible spoiler end of possible spoiler.

I may have to wander over to the Shake Shack after work.

Ooooh... Well, just get the regular Chocolate or Vanilla Frozen Custard.  The Chocolate Candied Corn Frozen Custard was just their Chocolate FC with some Candy Corn mixed in.

However, they are in the midst of "Shacktoberfest", so you could really splurge on a "German Chocolate Cake Concrete".  :)

Or you could also get their 'Shroom Burger"...

I finished the LIL' BUSH episodes and the bonus feature with about 25 minutes to spare. However, I didn't get to view much of anything since I had updated the firmware in my Samsung Blu-ray player, and was using the time to get it set-up properly (when one updates the firmware, it resets the machine to its default settings.)

To make sure things were working properly, I put in THE SIXTH SENSE Blu-ray and watched about 10 minutes of it.

Tonight's UGLY BETTY was entertaining, but I had figured out who pushed Christina almost as soon as it happened, so none of the red herrings they had during the show's first 45 minutes fooled me at all. (I still enjoyed Betty's playing detective.)

I was, however, surprised about the parentage of Daniel, Jr.

Enjoyed GREY'S ANATOMY very much, but if I hadn't seen Daniel J. Travanti's name in the credits, I never would have recognized him. And I really felt for Izzie at the end of the show.

And I thoroughly enjoyed the new LIFE ON MARS. Jason O'Mara gave a very tender, heartfelt performance, and the cast (apart from Lisa Bonet whom I've never cared for) was very good. I'm going to enjoy this one as long as it lasts. I'll be looking at the overnight ratings closely.

I didn't realize it was Daniel J Travanti until he sort of cocked his head and looked over at the camera.  It was just a glimpse that rang a bell with me. I was quite surprised it was him.

As I mentioned before I really enjoyed it, too. Much more than I thought I would. So much for getting work done on Thursday nights!

Thanks for the link, Jose. I usually read about reality shows here, but I don't remember the Tabatha one.

Time for me to get back to Leopold and Loeb.  This book is the best written of the Land L books I've read. I'm enjoying it

Aww...

I finally remembered that had uploaded a TON of pics to the Kodak Picture Gallery site.  -I had been wondering what happened to all of my pics to Australia, and, lo and behold, there they were!  So, here's a little trip down memory lane...

From my visit to Australia, well, Melbourne, in particular.

Yes, because the night is so crowded with other shows that I record, I had to watch these three in real time. I was lucky that I had finished my work viewing before UGLY BETTY started.

Today, I went to Borders and with my 30% off Borders Rewards coupon, I bought a DVD...U-Carmen (http://www.amazon.com/U-Carmen-Pauline-Malefane/dp/B000R5NZ46/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1223613222&sr=8-1).  I saw it on IFC a few months ago and thought that it was wonderful.  It's Bizet's "Carmen" set in South Africa.  It was translated and it's sung in the Xhosa language, but the music is all Bizet.  I highly recommend it. :D

Started watching my first (of many, I hope) Bollywood movies of the long weekend. Tonight was COMMANDO (1988) starring 1980s action stars Mithun Chakravarty and Hemant Birje as two army guys battling terrorists and ninjas (?!).

Thanks DR MBarnum and DR George - ...Although, I'm pretty sure I posted those pics after I originally took them in 2003. Or maybe they just got "shared" since I think we were still on the "brown board" then (which did not have image posting available).

And I also came across the pictures of the Australian gymnasts and divers I took as back-up pics for HR. ;)

I don't think anyone had talked about the show until tonight. -And tonight was the season finale. All in all, it was/is a truly guilty pleasure tv viewing. I mean it was like Bravo found these "car accidents" and then hired Tabatha to make sure we didn't look away. ;)

I dunno. ???  Do you have some sort of Admin setting regarding viewing attachments? Are you able to attach files when in regular Reply mode? (under Additional Options)

And now I'm going to bed.

Goodnight.

I don't think that anything needs to be turned on (and that's not a euphemism).  Let me link the pictures and see if that'll work for you:
