Work today.

Oh well.

TOD:

CD - Michael Buble
DVD - The Gale Storm Show and The Roaring 20's - thanks to DR MBARNUM.
VHS - nada

I mostly remember the first couple of seasons of TGSS.  Some of the episodes I now have are from the last 1959-60 season when the show moved to ABC and changed from a Hal Roach Jr production to an ITC production.  It is very STRANGE to see Gale change from her little girl 50's appearance to the more sophisticated woman hair and makeup from 1960....but there are LOTS of musical numbers.

And fellow Dot Recording Star Pat Boone shows up to sing "Bernadine"!

Someone mentioned the Associated Press was "friendly" to LITTLE MERMAID.  Here's the AP review; I think if this review were in the NY Times (and of course it's not!!!), the overall critical picture would be very different.  Be assured Disney will promote the heck out of this review, which gets picked up all over the place.  Caveat re my biases:  The "new" lyricist is a friend through the BMI Workshop, and Mr. Menken has been so supportive of Starfighter and Skip's other work that we really wish him well in everything, and I'm a rabid fan of Doug Wright's work in general, so my comments on Little Mermaid may be filtered through that, whether I want to admit it or not.

`The Little Mermaid' Swims to Broadway
By MICHAEL KUCHWARA, AP Drama Critic
Thursday, January 10, 2008
(01-10) 16:00 PST New York (AP) --

You try singing and dancing while wearing a tail. More than a little difficult. Yet "The Little Mermaid" — tail intact — amiably swims along on good cheer and charm.

The long-awaited stage version of the 1989 Disney animated film, which opened Thursday at Broadway's Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, may have a few uneasy moments shoehorning the story in between all that lavish, and some might say unnecessary, underwater spectacle.

Yet forget the overused and now cliche "theme-park" adjective. This musical, buoyed by one of the best Disney film scores and a delightful new leading lady, succeeds as enjoyable family entertainment. And, yes, the sets are big, but then, so is the ocean.

Julie Taymor's take on "The Lion King" — creating an astonishing theatrical landscape — set the bar pretty high for stage adaptations of Disney movies.

If director Francesca Zambello doesn't quite accomplish that same kind of amazing transformation here, she and her design team have found a viable way to make this remounting of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale seaworthy. And Disney has spent the money to back her up.

Zambello's division between water and land is accomplished through set designer George Tsypin's use of a translucent plastic. It suggests an exotic, ocean-deep world where actors portraying the finny folk glide around on shoes that have wheels on the back of them.

Chief among these creatures is a winsome mermaid named Ariel, who longs for a handsome, yet landlocked, prince. Can she find true love if she renounces life under the sea? Ariel, played by Sierra Boggess, is the latest in a series of spunky musical-comedy heroines — think about the young women in "Wicked" or "Legally Blonde" — who seek to overcome obstacles. In the end, she does, of course, find true love.

Boggess not only possesses a lovely voice, she can handle comedy, too. Humor slips sporadically into Doug Wright's efficient book which fills in some of the gaps in the film's story line. Most of the jokes are provided by Sherie Rene Scott as Ursula the sea witch, played as sort of a campy, water-logged Norma Desmond, with a bit of Mae West thrown in for good measure.

Scott is a marvelous comedian, yet she seems a bit lost in the garish makeup and an excess of costume, especially some unwieldily tentacles, designed by Tatiana Noginova. Still, she gets to sing the catchiest of the new musical numbers, "I Want the Good Times Back," aided by a pair of conniving eels who are played by Derrick Baskin and Tyler Maynard.

The flavorsome Broadway score includes the movie's songs, courtesy of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, most notably such hits as "Under the Sea,""Kiss the Girl" and "Part of Your World." They have been augmented with new work by Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater, a worthy successor to Ashman who died in 1991.

The rest of the cast is a strong assortment of Broadway regulars including Norm Lewis as Ariel's father, King Triton; Eddie Korbich as a tap-dancing seagull, and Tituss Burgess as that Caribbean-drenched crab Sebastian. And Sean Palmer manages to turn Prince Eric, Ariel's love interest, into something more than cardboard, no small achievement.

Choreographer Stephen Mear works overtime, providing a cascade of dances. Consider the calypso-tinged "Under the Sea," in which designer Tsypin has placed on stage two large rotating columns that look as if they are some kind of weird, space-age coral.

These columns provide the backdrop for Mear's most ambitious swirl of choreography, one in which those denizens of the deep get to demonstrate the kinetic quality of their life under water. It's an extravagant riot of color and movement that works particularly well in a theater.

Closely aligning a stage production to its popular cinematic source material is risky business. Look what happened to Broadway's "Young Frankenstein" and the comparisons made to the original — and more effective — Mel Brooks movie. That hasn't happened here. "The Little Mermaid" has found its own unique on-stage sea legs.

USA Today is what i would call "friendly" and "positive" rather than a rave - even though this critic is known for somehow going against the tide from time to time.  But it still feels like a recommendation to a large extent.  Here's that review so you can judge for yourself if you're interested.

Broadway's 'Little Mermaid' could have legs
By Elysa Gardner, USA TODAY

NEW YORK — The arrival of a new Disney musical on Broadway is always met with high expectations and sharpened knives. The Little Mermaid (**½ out of four), which opened Thursday at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, would seem especially ripe for the former.

The stage adaptation of the animated film, based on Hans Christian Andersen's classic tale, boasts a sterling creative team. It includes Alan Menken, the composer responsible for some of the catchiest tunes written for the Mickey Mouse empire in recent decades, and librettist Doug Wright, whose credits include the Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning I Am My Own Wife and last season's excellent Grey Gardens.

But the new Mermaid is ultimately less than the sum of its impressive parts, offering neither the richly imaginative spectacle of The Lion King nor the old-fashioned vitality and charm of Mary Poppins.

On the other hand, anyone inclined to dismiss Disney's latest extravaganza as a triumph of flash over feeling will be hard-pressed to do so. Wright, Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater — who helped craft a bunch of new songs to accompany the ones from the movie, which Menken wrote with his late collaborator Howard Ashman — have developed the tale of a young mermaid's longing to live among humans into an endearing, if rather conventional, love story.

That doesn't mean that the title character has been reduced to a romantic sap. Though her suitor Prince Eric now figures more prominently into the plot, Ariel is the pluckier of the pair; as played by the sweet-voiced Sierra Boggess, she is graceful and willful in equal measure. Sean Palmer's Eric is bland by comparison, though he sings robustly and looks great in Tatiana Noginova's dashing costumes.

Sherie Rene Scott is predictably sassy as Ursula, the sea witch and estranged aunt who tries to sabotage Ariel's dreams, and Norm Lewis lends a gentle authority as Ariel's father, King Triton. Eddie Korbich turns in a frisky performance as the sea gull Scuttle, who offers Ariel advice and delivers the best of Menken and Slater's new tunes, the snappy Positoovity.

But Mermaid's most memorable numbers —Under the Sea and Kiss the Girl, both from the film — fall to the crab Sebastian, Triton's faithful but hardly fearless servant, played by an impish Tituss Burgess.

Wright provides these players with plenty of aquatic and crustacean wordplay. "That's what I call 'reelin' him in,' " Scuttle observes when Ariel maneuvers herself into Eric's arms. "This is gonna get me in real hot water," says Sebastian, who later frets that he has "no backbone."

Sebastian does have a good heart, though. So does Mermaid, and it's the asset that keeps the show afloat.

I saw November on Wednesday. I was disappointed. The performances are excellent but I don't care for the play. I am not a big fan of David Mamet and this play just furthers my belief that (IMHO) he is overrated. After a while the use of the "F" word loses all meaning. The play runs an hour and 45 minutes and you don't go ten minutes at a time without hearing the "F" word in many different forms, with "er", in plural form, as a gerund, take your pick. I'm not a prude by any stretch of the imagination and I can curse with the best of them but come on, is that all you can say? Perhaps he's doing it because it's his trademark. I don't know, I just know that while there are some very funny lines and excellent performances (Nathan Lane really is wonderful) the play does not add up for me. It's trite, crass, vulgar and like a sitcom (in a bad way). A sitcom that can use the "F" word. The audience around me was eating it up and I did laugh, more at the beginning but as the evening wore on I grew tired of the repetition. I knew I was in trouble when I looked at my watch, twice!

I have higher hopes for Is He Dead?

August Osage County got phenomenal reviews so it's no longer available on TDF but it is on TKTS and there are various discounts available so I will try to see it sometime in February. I just have reservations because although it's been reviewed as the best new play on Broadway in years and all the performers have been glowingly praised, I know the subject matter (and it's also 3 and a half hours long beginning at 7:30pm to get out at 11) and I don't take well to cretinous people screaming and being dysfunctional all evening. It's being compared to O'Neill and Long Day's Journey (which I love) but I shall make my own judgement.

And now, back to Gordon and Betty Moore.

I seem to remember BEAUTY AND THE BEAST getting terrible reviews by the NY critics, too. They all cried THEME-PARK! It may well have been, but I found it an enchanting evening in the theater, and I know if I had seen it as a child, I would have been overwhelmed by all the song, dance, and magic.

Undoubtedly, THE LITTLE MERMAID won't have the run that BEAUTY AND THE BEAST had (how many shows will?), but I'd be willing to buy a ticket to see it.
Title: Re:THE TOP TEN BRAIN
Post by: FJL on January 11, 2008, 07:54:13 AM
The Wall Street Journal critic, while not a total rave, is very very positive about LITTLE MERMAID.  As I said, I'm very pro this show, but it does seems that there are enough postive reviews to suggest that overall, the overnight reviews for MERMAID from the NY-based critics will end up at least a decent bit better than the overall overnight reception of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST over a decade ago, and nowhere near the near-unanimous negative overnight reception for TARZAN.  (What the weekly critics hold for LITTLE MERMAID is obviously unpredictable.)

From Terry Teachout in the Wall street Journal:

Rumors of doom have stalked "The Little Mermaid" ever since its Denver tryout last August, and the whispers grew louder as it swam toward Broadway. So let me start off by answering the big question: The new Disney musical is a charmer. No, it's not "Return of the Lion King," but "The Little Mermaid" passes the ooh-and-aah test with plenty of room to spare. Unlike the inexplicably grumpy "Mary Poppins," "Mermaid" is both visually ingenious and emotionally satisfying, and I expect it to run from here to eternity and back again.

Based on the much-loved 1989 animated feature that breathed new life into the cartoon trade, "The Little Mermaid" is a sugar-sparkled retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's darkly ironic fairy tale about a mermaid with a wandering eye who falls for a human prince and trades her tail and voice for a pair of legs so that she can woo him. In the Disney version, Ariel (Sierra Boggess) gets the guy (Sean Palmer) and lives happily ever after, though not before running afoul of Ursula (Sherie Rene Scott), a scene-stealing octopus who collects "poor unfortunate souls" and wants to put Ariel's on her shelf.

All this is vastly easier to tell--or draw--than it is to put on stage. To start with, how do you turn that stage into a seaful of swimming fish?
Choreographer Stephen Mear solved part of the problem by equipping the underwater members of the cast with Heelys, the popular sneakers with wheels built into the heels, thus allowing them to glide instead of walking. Add to this the long-finned costumes of Tatiana Noginova, the fantastically elaborate sets of George Tsypin and the subaqueous rear projections of Sven Ortel and you get a nonliteral evocation of marine life that is not merely plausible but downright uncanny. Forget the kids: I oohed and aahed like a six-year-old as Ariel floated upward to the ocean's surface and turned into a human....

DR VIXMOM re: the VIXTER seeing SWEENEY TODD.

I think each person is different. I know my mom looked away during the violence (she found it overly graphic).

I personally do not like violence at all, and agree with DR Jose. I found that they made things so over the top, that i did not find it horrific in the least.

The blood was so bright. Everything was so fake. I did not look away once.

If the Vixter loves musicals (which she does) then i think this is a movie she should see.  Although like DR MattH said, if she has not seen it until now, she can probably wait for the dvd.

I would also see if you could view a few clips online, just so you get a sense of what the movie is like.  It's hard for us to explain it.  I personally found the tone so grim and dismal.  But i don't think it is too much for most teens.

Good morning.  I think.

I had another computer crash yeaterday - and all my emails got deleted.  AGAIN.
So I spent much of the day and night with email recovery software I bought.  And did manage to get some stuff back.  But not everything.  And some of it was "recovered,"  but without the sender name, subject line, or date sent, so I have a large mass of emails that are unidentified.  Ugh!

I think I need a new computer.

Her other film credits include TOO MUCH, TOO SOON, THE MAGIC SWORD, THE BEAT GENERATION, I PASSED FOR WHITE, and SEX KITTENS GO TO COLLEGE and of course she was a TV horror film host in the 1950s, and before that, a model.

I met her during one of my first trips to Los Angeles at the Ray Courts Show.

Here you can see her in her most famous film role....

I don't think the critic's reviews of Little Mermaid, to the extent that they've been fairly negative, reflects the majority opinion of the audience seeing the show.  At least not at the performances I've been at.  I think there are just some shows that some critics are pre-determined not to like, and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy for them.

But Little Mermaid is one of the very few shows on Broadway right now that you can take a single digit age child to, and for this reason, I think it's pretty critic proof.  And the bad reviews probably mean the audience won't go in with over-hyped expectations, and so the parents might end up liking it better than they thought they would.

Well, I'm not sure "brave" is the term I'd use - perhaps "perservering"...

I must admit to being regularly distracted by the tightest set of blond twinkie-buns I've ever seen (was that Ken Miller?).

I must admit that when Prof Franz neatly packed all his little friends into the brief-case (and made a point of saying that he wasn't putting them to sleep) - and then, after carefully closing the lid, he uncermoniously jerks it upright and sashays out of the door - those kids would have crowded the ER after that experience!

Congrats on the top ten for the BRAIN!

TOD:

DVD:
VIVAH - which I've finally gotten around to watching. . .let me tell, nay, WARN you, DR MBarnum:  this is a gorgeous film which will wet your handkerchief for a while!  Although it is a straight-forward story, the tale of a wedding from engagement to the wedding night, there are many wonderful songs and a believable emotional center.  Mr. Kapoor has many fine moments, too.  But, there are tears to be shed. . .

HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX - the more I ponder this Potter film, the more I like it.  It's dark.  Harry matures.  Umbrage is a fine characterization.  The final scenes, the fights in The Ministry are some of the best Harry Potter moments committed to film.  Also, very importantly, the movie moves. . .never once does it drag, but presses forward toward its melancholy conclusion.

CD:
THE BROADWAY MUSICALS OF 1943 - Jason Graae, Sally Mayes and Heather MacRae.  Love Sally's "To Keep My Love Alive."
THE BROADWAY MUSICALS OF 1935 featuring Emily Skinner.
THE BROADWAY MUSICALS OF 1953 featuring Davis Gaines.

der B - Different characters than I Am My Own Wife, and Doug Wright writes for character.  Wright's most important (IMHO) contribution to Little Mermaid is his gift for transition between book and song, exhibited also in Grey Gardens.

Here's what i had written on All that Chat:

"I also liked it quite a lot, and found it the most consistently enjoyable of the six Broadway Disney shows. (Yes, even more than Lion King, which had those long lapses in the storytelling, where LittIe Mermaid never did, for me, anyway.) I saw it shortly after the strike ended, and then I thought there was too much dancing and ensemble stuff for my taste in Act I, but I forgave that since the placement of the first act curtain probably dictated the length of the act, and the kids around me were rapt during those numbers. I admit a BMI Workshop inclination and a tendency to like Disney (and that my other half has worked for Disney in the past), but I must repeat that I found the quartet "If Only" to be perhaps among the most moving experiences I'd had at a Broadway show in a while, tying up the emotional underpinnings of the show, and shockingly (for me) even surpassing the emotional highs in Doug Wright's own Grey Gardens. I take issue with the comments about Doug Wright's book, as IMHO Wright sets up and leads into numbers with so much grace and beauty, and that might have accounted for so many of the songs landing so well with me, even on first hearing."

As for Disney's The Little Mermaid...

I liked the show the two times I've seen it - and I will probably see it again - but the whole evening seemed filled with missed and misguided opportunities.  And most of those opportunities were missed by the director and her team of designers.  -And I was sort of surprised that Francesca Zambello was brought on board in the first place since no one was really that thrilled with her work on the "Alladin" show in DisneyWorld.

The plastic-ness of the sets works well for the most part, but then there are some downright puzzling looks - at least to my eyes.  (Ariel's bedroom in the castle is surprisingly bare, and up against a backdrop that looks like it was painted with tempera paint.)  I agree with the one review who called it the "prettiest ugly show in town".  The show curtain is particularly grade-school-looking.

I will say that some of the negative reviews really do seem to be a bit on the unnecessarily harsh side - heck, even Brantley isn't as snide as he can be when he gets in that "mood" - but I think they more or less are right on the mark.  Sadly, the performers and their performances have consequently been given short shrift in most of the reviews.  And I feel sorry that some of the reviewers are blaming Sherie Rene Scott for her "choices", which when seen in the larger scheme, are probably more "team-influenced" than anything else.  I mean, if her Ursula was as scary as the cartoon-movie-Ursula, who knows what kind of trauma that would cause the kids in the audience.  Heck, there were a number of kids who started crying the first time Ursula appears.

In fact, I think the scariest number in the show - to my sensibilities at least - is "Les Poissons".  The sound of that HUGE cleaver is quite the "THWACK!!!!!!".   And, yes, it's a humorous number, but it's also about killing something.  And when that something is a puppet-cum-actor-in-a-costume, well...THWACK!

And as for Disney's Little Mermaid again...

One thought that repeatedly went through my mind while watching the show was, "Would this show have been served better if it been placed in a bigger theatre with a bigger stage?"

Yes, Beauty's Been Decreased (thank you, "Forbidden Broadway") did well in the Lunt-Fontanne after it was transferred over from The Palace, but when that show was in The Palace... WOW!  I definitely think the big production numbers such as "Under The Sea" and "Kiss The Girl" would benefit from not being as "cramped".  And it would have been nice to see Eddie Korbich getting a little more room to hoof in those big bird shoes.

I think throat slashing is far more gruesome, in that it is realistic.  There are more scary people out there than giant sharks & Jurassic Park doesn't exist, yet. ;D

Mostly I was going by what Vixmom was saying, how she felt Vixter would react, and the fact I couldn't watch these shows when I was young.  You should have seen me the first time Keith insisted I watch THE BLOB with him. ::) ;D

Jaws is much scarier - in puts unspecting youngsters in harms way in the most innocuous of settings, a summer's day at the beach - a scene the Vixter might well visit; a situation she could easily envision involving her - unlikely she would identify with a guy getting a shave in eighteenth centiuy London. Jurassic park, again, puts kids in mortal peril when they have done nothing untoward.

Both Jaws and Jurassic have scenes of more realistic blood and gore than does ST!

The Blob would indeed be scary - it involves teens emperiled in an ordinary event.

In evaluating a kid's reaction to a film it is the difficult job of the adult to see the film through the child's eyes - they find the possibilty of family separation (or the death of a parent) much more unsettling than a simple murder of some adult.

der Brucer

PS For all the mention of the blood spurting gore, Mrs Lovett's demise is much more blood curdling!

I personally would recommend avoiding all of the above films, for the sensitive.  Keith is shocked when I'm the one who wants to see a scary film, usually more to see an actor than my desire to see the film.

I suspect Keith is delighted when you go to a scary film - what with you all curled in his lap ;D

Tod:car CD=handel's JOSHUA, replaced by Emile Hersch's symphonies 1 & 2-atonalish, but very exciting-the Naxos CD has the biggest photo, it takes up almost the whole cover-probably because mr Hersch is extremely handsome as well as talented(I bought the CD, didn't I?-)but then I once bought a cd of a Brahm's concerto because the pianist, a Mr Hough, had one of the nicest 3-piece suits I've ever seen.Next up, the Eng cd reissue of Julie Andrews The lass with the delicate air, which I already had on vinyl, but you cant play vinyl in a car. I fell asleep last night watching a Guy Pearce film, something about before the snow falls-Not Mr Pearce's fault, it was just Very busy at work.

Well, MattH may disagree, but I say "a" not "an" based on the sound of the word.

der Brucer

After all we say "a uniform" and "a one legged man"

In "American" English, use "a" before a word that has a consonant "sound", including the "y".  A young girl.  A year-long.  A euphemism.  A eucharist.  A European summit.

Use "an" before a word that has a vowel "sound", including "h", such as "an homage", "an honor", "an honest".  But "a heavy load", etc., because you are actually "sounding" the "h".

And, like DR MattH, I was not surprised to read about Chris Bowman.  Still, it's sad to see talent like he had go to waste.

Absolutely. He had the makings of greatness; he could have been one of the legendary skaters of all-time with his natural gifts and on-ice charisma. Instead, he settled for "good enough" and will forever be spoken of as one of the "if-only" skaters.

Absolutely correct! It's not the first letter of the word that determines the use of the article, it's the first SOUND the word makes.

Well, my hopes of maybe watching BLADE RUNNER (or any other DVD for fun) ended this afternoon.

Currently I am watching the DVD box set of THE ODD COUPLE, almost finished with disc 2 of a 4 disc set. I have waiting the box set of HAWAII FIVE-O which is 25 episodes.

In the mail today came the Blu-ray of THE GAME PLAN and the new Criterion release of MISS JULIE. Not only that but in the mail from Criterion are five more films - THIS SPORTING LIFE (a 2 disc set), and FOUR FILMS BY AGNES VARDA (four films plus three shorts by the legendary French director).

All of these will be released on January 22, so I have 11 days to get them all watched and written up.

Not to be outdone, Paramount sent me another TV box set on DVD: JAG/Season 5. It comes out on January 29.

So, I have plenty to watch regardless of the writers' strike.

But I've heard some people (a Gypsy reference) say "an historical" instead of "a historical". :-\

"Some People" say "mischievious" instead of "mischievous", too.

I've also heard folks say "an hysterical", too.  But have you ever heard anyone say "an hissy fit"?  Starts with the "same" sound.  "A" is correct.

Folks also say "8 a.m. in the morning."  Redundant.  Use "a.m." or "morning", but not both in the same construct.

Also, "o'clock" is always a reference to afternoon.  I hear "8 a.m. o'clock" all the time.  On the news.

"P.M" references any time "after" noon...and only the hour should distinguish between daytime and evening.  Use "3 p.m. today" rather than "3 p.m. (or "o'clock") this afternoon."  Use "today at 7 o'clock" rather than "tonight at 7 o'clock" or "tonight at 7 p.m."  In this construct "today" is a generic reference for the entire 24 hours of a day rather than something that separates day from night.

News anchors and newspaper writers are the WORST offenders of the English language these days.

Either way the eggs are busted!

In America, we have what is known as the "collective noun".  The "collective noun" is a word that identifies a group of things...be the group objects or people...or industrial entities.

For instance, "Bank of America" is a collective noun.  In America, the collective noun is treated as a "singular" entity and, thus, it takes singular pronoun references and verbs.  "The Bank of America is one of the largest banks in the U.S., and it is the bank in which I keep my money."

In the U.K., it is a "plural entity":  "The Bank of America are offering decent interest on their certificates of deposit."

Another thing "they do" in America that is beneath all the contempt I can manage to muster at any given time is the abuse of subject-verb agreement.

"If anyone (singular) wishes to donate clothes to a good cause, they (plural) should contact Grace Larson at the church."

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

"Commonly" is as "commonly" does.

The language continues to be beaten to death.

Seeing something in print doesn't remotely mean that it was checked by anyone who knew how to properly write it.

In fact, most "written word" today is rife with errors -- typographical, grammatical and so on.

We're in hard times for sure!

From http://andromeda.rutgers.edu/~jlynch/Writing/a.html

Most of the confusion with a or an arises from acronyms and other abbreviations: some people think it's wrong to use an in front of an abbreviation like "MRI" because "an" can only go before vowels. Not so: the sound, not the letter, is what matters. Because you pronounce it "em ar eye," it's "an MRI."

One tricky case comes up from time to time: is it "a historic occasion" or "an historic occasion"? Some speakers favor the latter — more British than American speakers, but you'll find them in both places — using an on longish words (three or more syllables) beginning with h, where the first syllable isn't accented. They'd say, for instance, "a hístory textbook" (accent on the first syllable) but "an históric event." (Likewise "a hábit" but "an habítual offender," "a hýpothetical question" but "an hypóthesis.") Still, most guides prefer a before any h that's sounded: "a historic occasion," "a hysterical joke," "a habitual offender" — but "an honor" and "an hour" because those h's aren't sounded. [Entry revised 21 April 2006; revised again 10 December 2006.]

While I was at the shower, they guys (Keith, Craig & Sherlock) visited with Keith's mother.  Sherlock, with permission, jumped on the couch and put his head on Mom's lap.  She was in heaven.:)

DR Penny was there looking exceptionally beautiful, if that is possible.

Keith's mother and brother kindly, and happily, watched Sherlock so he wouldn't have to sit in the car.  We were able to linger and relax, giving us more time to visit.

Good morning, all!  I've been caught up in various things this morning: notes in the files on the two Victor Herbert shows, questions concerning 2007 donations for the IRS, and here I am.

My day's two major occupations are already laid out, and I'm off to work.

TOD:
   DVD:  Pickwick Papers (BBC)
CD:  Kristofer McDowell (I survived Jerome Records!), Hansel and Gretel
   VCR:  short art films

Does Art have a last name?

TOD:

The shipment from Jessica's Biscuit arrived today.  So, when it comes to books, I'll be reading:

Laura Shapiro's Something from the Oven, the history of how the food industry tried to totally make over how the American housewife cooked back in the 1950s ... and how they didn't exactly succeed.

Michael Ruhlman's The Elements of Cooking, about the craft of cooking, with just one recipe in the entire book.

Francoise Bernard and Alain Ducasse's The Good Cuisine, about cooking French.

Bobby Flay's Bobby Flay Cooks American, about cooking American.  (Didn't see that one coming, did ya!)

And Carolin C Young's Apples of Gold in Settings of Silver, a lavishly illustrated tome about the history of elegant dining.

One book in this order is on backorder, which is surprising.  The book is Carlo Middione's Traditional Pasta, and what is surprising is that this is the book Jessica's Biscuit is sending me free, as a thank-you for placing such a nice order.

I've also been re-reading Parry Hotter and the Heathly Dallows, and Anthony Bordain's Les Halles Cookbook.

And on the CD front, der Brucer wants me to listen to Disney's Der Glockner Von Notre Dame.  It's in German.  Thank-you, George!

I did listen to The Actors Fund Benefit performance of CHESS.  Wow!  I like this recording very much indeed.  Sutton Foster, Julia Murney, Josh Groban, Raoul Esparza, Adam Pascal and Norm Lewis.  It's quickly becoming my favorite CHESS recording. . .now if they only had Judy Kuhn instead of Miss Murney. . . .

I think that was my favorite of all the Actors Fund benefit concerts.  It was one of those "electricity in the audience" nights.  People were very excited and curious to hear Josh Groban sing Anthem.  But Chess has been a guilty pleasure of mine ever since I first saw it in London.

Yes, it is incorrect.  But the underlying reason for this common usage is the desire to be gender neutral.  It gets awkward to keep saying "If anyone wishes to donate clothes to a good cause, he or she should contact Grace Larson at the church.

I'm sure Ron will agree with my following statement.  I hate when the flight I'm on leaves late and my connecting flight departs on time, causing me to miss my flight by minutes.

I expect that is what happened to Craig.  I seriously doubt he managed to get off his first flight, rush to the next terminal, and be seated in time for take-off, all in 10 minutes time.

Come to think of it, I might have done that once.  Maybe I had a few more minutes, not many.  I went running through the San Francisco airport shouting "excuse me, excuse me".  The people were very kind making way for me.  I arrived at the gate gasping for air just as they were about to close the doors.  They waited until I could breathe well enough to walk onto the plane. ;D

It is strange to walk, or run, up to the gate and they know your name, simply by default.

I remember reading (many years ago) about this couple in Sweden (I think) that were in the same situation...brother and sister, separated at birth and found out that they were siblings when they had a blood test when they got their marriage license.  Before they found out that they were related, they had decided not to have kids.  They sued (petitioned?) to be able to get married anyway, since they didn't grow up as siblings and didn't have that "taboo" bond and didn't want kids.  They won.  They got married.

Question for MattH and JMK...when you are sent DVDs to watch and review...what happens if it is a something you just can't stand, but there are, like, 50 episodes that you have to watch?

You just grit your teeth and soldier through them. I've had two TV box sets that I've had to deal with (and quite a few films, too) and couldn't stand. You just don't always get things you personally like to have to watch.

Good Evening!

In the meantime...

Since I hadn't really left the apartment today, except to go to the gym, and since I needed to pick up a few groceries, I went ahead and hopped on the A train, and headed down to Times Square.  Once there, I made a brief stop at the Virgin Megastore, then walked up Eighth Ave. to Westerly Market (basically, the local version of Whole Foods - with better prices on a bunch of items!), then up to Columbus Cirlce where they were taking down the Christmas lights from the trees out front, then back on the A Train back uptown.

I've been in a similar situation twice - and both times I was connecting through Chicago-O'Hare, however, since they're so used to flight delays there - and since there were a few other people who had to make the same connections...

The flight crew had called ahead to tell the other flights that some people would be cutting it close.  They even made the "other" people on the plane stay seated once we landed in order for the "close" people to deplane first.  Then came the mad dash... "We've been expecting you.".... Whew!

:)

Do you have or have you heard the Swedish cast recording?  It's got the original Anatoly and he's still a fantanstic singer.

The following are in my CHESS folder:
1.  CHESS demos
2.  CHESS pa Svenska featuring Tommy Körberg as Anatoly.
3.  CHESS concept album
4.  CHESS original Broadway cast
5.  CHESS in concert 1994
6.  CHESS the complete cast album 2001/2002
7.  CHESS the Actors Fund concert 2003

That's a lot of nights in Bangkok. . . .

DR td, I love the concept recording.  The Broadway recording was not able to match the splender of the concept recording.

The London version was glorious.  Unfortunately, much was changed, and for the worse, in the Broadway production.   It's most unfortunate that the London version, or some form of it, is not permitted to be performed in the United States.

Although I will admit to one improvement -- the addition of the song Someone Else's Story.

Do you happen to have the Swedish concert recording?  I've never heard that one, but I know a lot of people like it.

The 1994 recording is the Swedish concert, and I like it, too.
Agree about "Someone Else's Story," and as good as it was in the Actors Fund concert, Judy Kuhn OWNS the song. . .

I don't remember who I discussed this with before, but which release of #6 do you have?  The truly complete original or the second release with fewer songs?  Click HERE (http://cgi.ebay.com/ABBA-RARE-org-Danish-CHESS-2set-CD-UNRELEASED-SONGS_W0QQitemZ170183251698QQihZ007QQcategoryZ307QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) for a copy on eBay of the original release with an explanation of the differences. :)
