Title: CATCHING THE WORM
Post by: bk on August 09, 2006, 12:20:58 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes have illuminated all you need to know about early birds and worms, and now it is time for you to post until the early cows come home - they're trying to catch some zebras, just for the halibut.

Floyd's SACCADE while viewing the CASCADE of water over the rocks went into such an overdrive that he got dizzy.

I boo-booed last night.

When it came time to get the duck out of the downstairs refrigerator, it turned out that I hadn't thawed the duck at all.  I'd thawed out a chicken.

Ooopsie!

So, instead of the duck with beet sauce dinner that I'd planned, I made for der Brucer a roast chicken.  It was quite yummilicious, with garlic mashed potatoes, carrots, and a few beet chips on the side.  But it wasn't the duck.

[Insert rhyme.]

I look forward to your comments on Curtains.

Out of curiosity, which of the performers in the cast have you worked with before?

And does knowing a performer personally change how you react to them on stage?

I remember LC, although she hasn't posted in YEARS.

Well, the saga begins. As I said yesterday, the phone went out. I checked it this morning before I left for the office and it still is not working. Here at the office I checked the Verizon Web site (you can check on-line for repair requests) and it says the problem was fixed at 6:45pm yesterday. Uh, uh. I will go back to the apartment and check one more time before I call the repair line again.

The good side to the phone being out was that I had lots of lovely posts to read this morning, including some choice ones from MusicGuy.

Good morning, all!  It's so nice to be back in my own space.  My brother Randy and sister-in-law Jo are excellent hosts, but the family angst is too much and I'm glad to be out of it.  When I left, my dad cried, and I suspect it was less because I'm so wonderful and  more for the fact that I cannot act as peacemaker between Randy and my evil brother on the crap that happened yesterday.  The Macbeths are at it again.

My brothers have had ugly fights before, one so bad on a Halloween visit around 1993 that my dad begged me to fix it before I left.  This time I couldn't.  I'm ecstatic to be out of the mess, but I fear this means my family of three brothers is blown to hell.  I have no wish to see the Macbeths ever again.

I had written a longer post on all the nonsense over the company my dad started in 1965, but I just spoke to my sister-in-law Jo Ann and things seem to be cooling down between the two.  She also said that my dad's coffee buddy Jim came by to visit last night and brought her a lot of green beans, which she and my dad are stringing.

This morning, I have to pick up the mail from the post office and go to Toyland for a bit.  I may run to the NYPL Theatre Collection this afternoon.

Here is a piece of news that proves the Emmy Awards no matter how the revamp the rules is still a popularity contest rather than quality.

NEW YORK - The television academy is facing uncomfortable questions about its procedures after  Ellen Burstyn was nominated for a best supporting actress Emmy for a 14-second performance.
Burstyn appeared briefly in the HBO movie "Mrs. Harris," playing a former lover in a flashback scene reminiscing about Scarsdale diet doctor Herman Tarnower.

She spoke two lines, totaling 38 words, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which measured her on-screen time.
"Based on the popular vote, this is a legitimate nomination," said Pam Ruben Golum, spokeswoman for the television academy.

There's no rule setting a minimum participation requirement for award consideration, but the TV academy is willing to consider one for next year, she said.
For an entrance fee of $200, actors or actresses can be considered for an Emmy, the academy said. Generally, names are submitted for consideration by agents, movie producers or the actors themselves.

Burstyn didn't submit her name for consideration; it was done by someone at the movie's production company, according to an executive at HBO who would speak only on condition of anonymity. The network had no comment about the nomination.

A total of 41 actresses were up for nomination in this category; a pool of 2,000 eligible performers, directors or casting directors were able to vote on who should be nominated.

The academy wouldn't discuss this process, but critics say it's clear that the nominations were little more than a popularity contest and, based on Burstyn's brief role, voted upon by a number of people who didn't even see what she did in the movie.

How many words did Beatrice Straight have in the film NETWORK?

Maybe the nominators were trying to encourage actors to take small parts, in that if they make an indelible imporession in a small part, they will be eligible for nominations?

Just playing devil's advocate on this, I didn't see the TV film in question.

It's Jane Powell Day on TCM, so the DVR will be working overtime recording the Powell movies I've either never seen (HOLIDAY IN MEXICO, THREE DARLING DAUGHTERS) or have on videotape/laserdisc and want to see if the TCM transfers better than so they can be burned onto DVD-Rs. I don't think any of these films are in the loop for a commercial DVD release, so I'll have to burn my own.

Hello, DRMUSICGUY....I think I forgot to say that yesterday.

I am too late today to be an early bird.

Raining today....

Watched Act Two of Seussical last night after my rehearsal of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD....hmmm.  I could hear the soloists okay....but the way the chorus is miked everything sounds like much....can't understand a word they're singing.  Not that it's much of a loss.

The production is very colorful and fun....the dancing is less than ordinary...and music and lyrics (for me) lack imagination....there is NOTHING there....

oh well....we are almost sold out!

David is indeed related to Julius - his son.  You weren't around when it was happening, but I directed a huge all-star tribute to Julius - a benefit for Tourette's Syndrome, which Julius was afflicted with.  Julius was a wonderful guy, and I produced the final incarnation of the Bajas - The Baja Marimbas.

I was very pleased with the work of Cheryl Baxter and her partner on What If - really good stuff, and FUNNY.  Also, Tom Callas' work on the original production of Stages had some nice moments, especially the title song.  Otherwise, I've either done the staging of the group numbers (I'm NOT a choreographer, heaven knows, but I know how to move people around pretty well), or there hasn't been anything to choreograph.

As to people I've been choreographed by, hmmm.  I liked everyone I worked with, but I don't know that I'd say that any of them were brilliant choreographers.  Joe Tremayne was fun (did The Creature Wasn't Nice), I liked David Winters and Hugh Lambert and someone else from Donny and Marie's show (I'm blanking on the name), and Marge Champion did the curtain call of Forget-Me-Not Lane, which was nice.  Kay Cole did the Guy Haines number in one of the STAGE benefits - he liked her okay.  Toby Bluth and his choreographer Ellen always did fun stuff at Bluth Brothers Theater - very creative.

I hope you are not giving up on a 50's number for the young girl....sounds like it's the perfect match for the material....maybe you should think Annette F instead of Connie F or even Dodie Stevens....and a big Panama with a purple hatband.

I'm finding that 50s numbers in a show that takes place in that decade are a cliche - that's my prob at the moment.  It's been done to death.  None of the other songs in the show use the 50s vernacular, musically speaking.  The song that I wrote was certainly cute and all, but it didn't really do what it needed to do, and for one of the characters involved, it made no sense at all (it's the girl's boyfriend - we have to clarify exactly what and who he is - he started off being one thing and ended up being another).

Why not (don't hate me) write a number that speculates on the future -- UFOs were a popular futurisitic issue...or something to do with how life will be so much better and how things will be so much cheaper....lots of optimism that truly did exist all lampooning what we now know never happened...and, in fact, only got worse.  It would be true to the decade and pertinent to the now!

Just a suggestion....

Hiya, denizens!

Yesterday i hied me off to Seattle to help my brother's son - the one I shlepped to San Antonio for, to drive his motorhome to my brother's house in Simi Valley... - pack up his kitchen stuff. Loaded a wad o' stuff into my car - which I'll store here at the cabin temporarily, and then took him to the airport for a flight to LA. While he's gone, I'll see about packing some of his other stuff - he gets back in two weeks, and has to be out of his apt by Aug. 31. Oh, there will be several trips back and forth with Stuff...

He's getting the motorhome title transferred today, and getting his driver's license. And I? well, I'm finishing a grant ap I'll present to Redmond Arts Commission tomorrow night, asking them to pay me to do the literary arts workshops the last week of Aug, at Redmond Library. We'll see if they'll cough up the funds. It is my suspicion that they will - they have $1800 left over in the Arts Ed grant budget, and $2000 left over in the Literary Arts grant budget -- Use It or Lose It - they have to get rid of it, or the City Council will stop allocating the funds... (this is a tip for y'all who are dragging your feet on writing grant ap's to fund your projects!)

Elmore, sorry about all the horrible family stuff - jeez, squabbling over the bones, when your dad is still alive and kicking... Wayne Dyer says people are like oranges -- their essence really comes out when they get squeezed. Under pressure, people reveal what's inside. Not just altruism and creativity and generosity and courage and kindness (which is radiating out of YOU, my friend), but greed and anger and hate and unresolved stuff from decades of festering... such is the test of time and "trouble".

No - it's a somewhat well-known TV choreographer - the joke is I remember his assistant was Charlene Painter.  It'll come to me.

So François is allowed visitors! Nice to know. When we get to France (and we will, eventually, I just don't know when) we will have a nice long visit with him.

DD Rachel and her DBF Adam visited with François in May and had a wonderful time. They spent almost a whole day together and DD pronounced him "cool."

Indeed, TPunk and I live in that upper part of Manhattan. We are near the 194 and Broadway, across from a giant stone outcropping.  You and td oughtta come up if you are coming to the city. That goes for Ginny and Cillaliz and any other visitors as well. Let us know!

Thanks for the offer!

Well, my buddy janet lives on West 96th, and very close to Straus Park, so visiting fellow H & Ks is indeed an option when in the city.

...And I? well, I'm finishing a grant ap I'll present to Redmond Arts Commission tomorrow night, asking them to pay me to do the literary arts workshops the last week of Aug, at Redmond Library. (this is a tip for y'all who are dragging your feet on writing grant ap's to fund your projects!)...

Good luck with the proposal, DR PennyO!

ENjoyed a Jane Powell afternoon (for the most part).

Began with her interview with Robert Osborne on Private Screenings. She was lovely, tactful, and a really sweet and down to earth woman.

Her reminiscences about Louis B. Mayer and then at the end of the interview had her actually sobbing. I love that they kept that in and didn't re-tape the end after she got herself under control. Very real.

Next, I watched OUR DARING DAUGHTERS which I had never seen before. Amazing the power of MGM that they made the very talented but decidedly plain Jose Iturbi the romantic male lead of this film (with Jeanette MacDonald as leading lady). Jane Powell played Jeanette's oldest daughter, and they had a lovely duet together near the end of the film that Jane mentioned in her interview.

Elinor Donahue (from FATHER KNOWS BEST and the first season of THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW among other roles) played the youngest sister.

I had never seen the movie before, and I liked it, but at only a few minutes short of two hours, it was WAY too long.

Next, I checked out the TCM broadcast of TWO WEEKS WITH LOVE (Jane's favorite of all her movies and certainly one of mine as well). It looked about equal in quality to the laserdisc in terms of color. I suspect in sharpness, it was a little better than the laser. I probably will burn this to a DVD-R so I can retire the laserdisc.

The nice thing about doing The Crucible is that it led me to Robert Ward's wonderful opera of it, and Mr. Ward's music in general (I think I mention the opera in the book).  Years later, when I began Bay Cities, our very first release was of Mr. Ward's music and I became very friendly with him - we ended up doing four or five CDs of his music.

Beatrice Straight is only on screen for five minutes and forty seconds, making hers the briefest performance ever to win an Oscar.

Wasn't Emma Thompson's screen time in "In the Name of the Father" very short, also?  I remember hearing something about only five minutes or so and still getting a supporting actress nomination, but I don't recall the details.  Anyone else know anything about it?

The peanut butter pie sounds real good!  I've been on a peanut butter yogurt kick...I get plain (and fat-free, but that's not necessary ;)) yogurt and just mix in some all-natural peanut butter and Splenda and it all just mixes so easily.  And it's tasty! :D I've only used Adams Old Fashioned peanut butter that has nothing but peanuts and salt.  I've never made it with peanut butter that doesn't need to be stirred (Jiff, Peter Pan, Skippy, etc.), so I don't know how those would work.  Try it, you'll like it. :)

DR Elmore - nice photo of your dad!

I am, as we speak, in the throes of making the chocolate pie for which DR Cillaliz posted the recipe.  Last night, I printed both on a sheet of paper and asked my family to pick one.  Since it makes 2 pies, I'll take one to the baby shower Friday and we'll have one here at home to taste.  I've already had an idea for a holiday variation - use peppermint stick ice cream.

As for the peanut butter pie, I also want to make that one soon because it's my mother's favorite pie variety.  If you'd come to the tri-state, BK, to visit DR Charles Pogue, I'd make you one, too!

I'm not fond of peanut butter but I DO like peanuts out of the shell! Odd, huh?

Matt - What made Jane Powell cry? Have you read her autobiography? It's quite a read.

Re: Beatrice Straight - I remember Beatrice Straight's performance in "Network" very well. It may be the shortest performance on camera but it was jam packed with great acting. Have you ever been told something and spontaneously break out in tears that you can't control? That's what she did in the film after Bill Holden tells her he's seeing another woman. It was heartbreaking. And then when she says she is going to fight for him, that just about did it for me. Wow. I think her Oscar was very well deserved. And speaking of the Oscars, she looked beautiful with her flowing, red hair in (I believe) a lilac gown.

DR Cillaliz - do you have a photo of the chocolate pie?  My crusts turned out real poufy, so I'm guessing that, after adding the ice cream, the pie will be real tall?

No, actually it's more like pie crust. Maybe after it cools and the softened ice cream is added it sinks. I've never made it, just eaten it ;D

Thank you, Jane.  Are you doing genealogy research?

Keith does that.

Currently we are researching dog food, since most are just junk, and which vaccinations we want & don’t want & by which manufacturers.  Basically we are reading about the needs of Bernese Mountain Dogs in general.

Oh, dear, I'm not seeing anything like pie crust, more like cake or brownies (Rob said it smelled pretty good from up in his room).  We'll taste-test one pie here at home tomorrow evening and that still leaves me time to stop at the bakery on my way to work Friday, if need be  :-\

Thanks, DRs TCB and Cillaliz.  This was really no biggie, just a formality.  And, since my 9th anniversary at the library is in about a month, I'll have to have my annual evaluation then.  How badly can I screw up in the next month?

Michael S-It wasn’t a restaurant.  We only had a couple of hours in Amsterdam so we just walked through the big outdoor shopping area.  It had a big sign that said to watch out for pickpockets.  Somewhere near the end (we entered from the train station side) there was an indoor area with all sorts of goodies.  To the left (if memory serves me correctly) the aroma of fresh waffles called us.  We purchased them to go and later regretted getting only one each.  We ate them plain, no need for any toppings.

My boss was here today to talk about my secretary problem. I've been doing all my own work since I came back.  It's going to get a little better but not much. The interesting part is he's going to get me a digital recorder and Dragon Naturally Speaking 9 (the new one) so I can do my own dictation and have the computer type it up.

He did irritate me when he said I'm not being friendly enough with people in the office....hello, I'm doing the work of at least 2 people, I don't have lots of time to chat

Well, I have to go shopping for foodstuffs.  I haven't decided if I'll make the chocolate or the peanut butter pie.  I think I'd like the chocolate pie better, but in a pot-luck setting, the ice cream aspect may not be the best choice.  And I could just make something complete different, also.  I'll decide when I get to the store.  Until later! :)

With large breed dogs it is important to find a food the slows the growth of the dog & prevents orthopedic problems.

Congrats to our Ginny!!!

Can't wait to see the new puppy, Jane and Keith. When do you think it will be ready for adoption? Glad it's another Mountain Dawg - saves having to change all those signs...

Hey, George - no, I didn't go to see Dirty Rotten Scoundrels last night - too tired after packing with my nephew, then sitting in traffic to the airport to send him off. I just turned around and sat in traffic back to the mountain.

Dinner tonight was a fabulous soup - I had some buffalo steak, which I cut into stew size, with carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, yellow squash, some bay leaves, oregano, pepper, and curry powder! Yummmmm! Now, maybe for some frozen blueberries blended up with some nonfat plain yogurt, for my version of ice cream...

Wasn't Emma Thompson's screen time in "In the Name of the Father" very short, also?  I remember hearing something about only five minutes or so and still getting a supporting actress nomination, but I don't recall the details.  Anyone else know anything about it?

I don't think this is correct. She's the defense attorney in the film and has quite a bit of screen time in court as I recall.

Judi Dench's Oscar-winning role as Elizabeth I in SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE is about 8 minutes in length.

A nice evening of movie watching. I started with SMALL TOWN GIRL. It looked about a hundred times better (sharper, more focused, better Technicolor) than the videotape, so I burned a DVD-R as I watched from the DVR.

Then came V FOR VENDETTA. This is a movie adapted from a graphic novel and filled with ideas "borrowed" from the past and slyly commenting on our present and possible future. Natalie Portman gives a sensational performance (and Hugo Weaving does some great things with body language and his voice since his face is masked throughout), and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I got drawn in totally and quite enjoyed piecing together the revenge scenario as the plot is quite splintered.

Hmmmm......I understand the dilemma about the 50's song.....hmmmmm....
you will find the tone....you need....seems to me a Bacharach-David type song....

Nice picture of your dad Larry!

Tonight I took a page out of MattH's itinerary - and I don't plan on putting it back - and watched a dvd (THE INNOCENTS) while making two, two I say, dvd-rs. . .AT LONG LAST LOVE (I doubt that FOX will find a way to take this one to dvd) and THE SINGING NUN (which would fit nicely into a WB boxed set featuring Debbie Reynolds).

My cousin took some nice picture of myself and the dog - nice, since I'm usually the one taking pictures of Dixie Bell - which I shall share when I upload them to Photobucket. . .

Had a nice evening on my end. Wrote some letters  including an op-ed to a local newspaper concering the upcoming trial here in Fargo of an alledged kidnapper and killer of a college student in Grand Forks. IMHO, this guy should have never been released in the first place for he had brutally raped and sodomized women in the past.

Even creepier, there is a person being tried for murder in Idaho and he used to come into the library I work at. He always made me feel uncomfortable.

Well, I didn't make either pie for the pot-luck at work tomorrow.  I went to Costco and bought some bite sized caramel macaroons with white chocolate.  It was a good thing that I didn't try to make something.  As soon as I got home from Costco (literally...I hadn't been in my house for more than five minutes!), my sister called me from her friend's new house, asking if I would help put up some blinds (meaning "put up some blinds").  I was just starting to watch "Last Comic Standing," so I set my VCR to tape the rest of that and "America's Got Talent."

Title: Re:CATCHING THE WORM

After we all got back (it took almost an hour), I had to take apart my sister's gas barbecue and put it in the back of my niece's truck, because I stupidly said that I'd bring an actual barbecue for the barbecue pot-luck at work.  Dopey me. :P But, I'm not the only one bringing one and FORTUNATELY, I'm not the one who signed up to cook. ;) I can just enjoy the whole experience.  Actually, I made up the sign-up sheet!  And I'm bringing the barbecue, so I've done plenty. ;D
Title: Re:CATCHING THE WORM
Post by: George on August 10, 2006, 12:04:25 AM
But then, as I was taking apart the barbecue, I lifted the gas tank and I don't know if there is enough propane in the tank for a whole lot of cooking.  So, early tomorrow morning, I'm going to get some.  Fred Meyer has filled tanks where all you do is put down a deposit and pay for the gas, then when the tank is empty, you bring it back and swap it for another full tank!  You don't buy the tank, you just rent it.  That's a pretty cool idea.  And I would assume that if you ever just bring back the tank, you can get your deposit back...maybe.  It's just a guess.  I'll find out in the morning.

So, I really hate to do this (no...I REALLY DO!) but I must officially Wussburger so that I can MAKE myself get up early enough to go to Fred Meyer for a propane tank, so that in case they don't have them, I have enough time to go somewhere to get my sister's filled.
