Friday was a very strange day in these parts.
We had major winds...sometimes gale force winds...buffeting everything, blowing stuff hither, thither and yon.
It was a sunny day, the breeze felt good when it wasn't blasting you with detritus from the roads and yards as it whipped around and blowing leaves from one yard into another halfway across town.
We had sirens going off around 5 p.m. The town siren went off first. I thought there must be a fire somewhere and wondered how the winds would impact that. Then more sirens sounded, but I couldn't tell if they were fire trucks or police cars or EMT vans.
As it turns out, trees were felled and power lines were knocked down in a section of town. Yes, those winds were rough and scandalously vicious. Another issue during the day was that some local folks decided to burn trash in their yards...and fire trucks had to be called out when the fire spread. Stupid folks in these here parts.
I had a beautiful stand of purple bearded iris beside my house. They withstood most of the blasts through the day, but yesterday morning they were all flattened to the ground. Lots of azaleas lost their blooms and pink and red petals covered the grounds around town.
The wind played havoc with the golfers at the Masters Tournament in August, as well.
Yesterday, however, calm prevailed.
