Title: MY OPENING SALVO
Post by: bk on October 20, 2010, 11:39:16 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had both an opening and a salvo, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently singing a song from Once Upon A Mattress, but they've changed the title to We Have An Opening For A Salvo.  Clever, these cows.

Good morning, all! I would have been online earlier but for the actions of the Oaf Above Me, who arrived home almost immediately after I turned off the lights at 11pm, crashed around the apartmrny for a bit and left. At 3am he returned with a young lady - I could hear their voices coming through the celing - so I was awake for around 30 minutes before passing out. I don't know - and I don't care - if they had sex since I was not awakened later by the noisy bed, but when the alarm went off at 6:30, I was not ready to get out of bed and start my day. Around 7, I dragged myself to a bath, and I'm hopoing it's a short recording day.

Today, we've got to record Margaret Jane Wray and Zak Stains on a Spanish American War anthem, "Columbia," Zak's two final solo numbers, and Korliss Uecker's musical comedy numbers, including the newly-discovered song from BABES IN TOYLAND, "Evaline McCook." She will come back in November and record her three German lieder.  I'm hoping to be home by 3pm. We'll see.

TOD:

I just saw the movie "Man Hunt" with Walter Pigeon, Joan Bennett, George Sanders and a very young Roddy McDowell. Wonderfully suspenseful and not at all like a Hollywood production. Alfred Newman's score uses "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" to great effect. It was about a hunter who had his chance to shoot Hitler but ends up being hunted himself. Takes place before the start of the war, but was wonderful nonetheless. Fritz Lang directed.

Others include "Casablanca," which I never get tired of watching, "To Be or Not to Be," "The Great Escape," "Das Boot," "Paisan" and a guilty pleasure, "Ilse, She-Wolf of the S.S."

I watched MY NAME IS JULIA ROSS last night.

I'd never seen it before and, truthfully, I was very disappointed

(Sorry BK)

Frankly, despite any faults, I like DEAD OF WINTER much better.

The performances, particularly by my late former client (Nina Foch), are fine, but the script is a mess.  There is absolutely not logic whatsoever to it.  The characters' actions/reactions are totally unbelievable.

Perhaps it was a great thriller in its day, but it certainly doesn't hold up.

And am I the only one who has never heard of putting chocolates in the freezer. What does it do? And do the chocolates taste the same when you take them out of the freezer?

TOD: The only WWII movies I've seen were Holocaust-themed, rather than spy-based (Schindler's List, Life is Beautiful), so not much to go on there.

Other than York Peppermint Patties, I've never really felt the need to freeze chocolates. One of my friends used to rave about frozen Snickerses, but they never did anything for me.

DR Elmore, that oaf is really getting on my nerves. Did the landlord ever reply to you?  This would drive me crazy. I'm not sure how you cope.

No, DR Jennifer, there's been no response from the landlord. I cope essentially by fantasizing brutally killing the Oaf in the various ways:
  1. waiting till I hear him around 5am go out to walk the dog and butchering him in the elevator
  2. waiting till he goes out around 5am, climbing the fire escape, killing whoever's in his bed and waiting for him to return to kill him
  3. knocking on his door and when he opens it, attacking him with a weapon, something will will not only kill but hurt

What I want to do is initiate an email trail of complaints, then taking the landlord to court and suing his ass off for doing nothing. I'm also thinking of going to the police precinct next week, when I'm out of the studio and tell them my concerns about possible drug dealing between 11pm and 4am.

This morning at precisely 10:00 a.m., a very nice (and very attractive) cable guy came over to my place to look at my cable modem and check out my Internet situation.  He looked at the brand new modem and saw that, yes, it really was dead.  He disconnected the modem and hooked up the cable to some device that ran tests on the cable connection and everything look fine, as far as cable connectivity was concerned.  He then went to his van and got another new modem...a different model than what I had just gotten AND one that allows for even higher speeds!  I wasn't able to check it out very much when he left, but I will when I get home. :D

I could tell that my mom had been watching Fox news when she told me how angry she was at the government.

I asked her what she was so angry about. She said that she didn't like the government telling her what she could and could not do. I asked her what was it that she wanted to do that the government would not allow her to do. She couldn't think of anything and then she got mad at me.

I tried to help her out by asking if it was that she just wanted to be able to murder someone, or take dope, or run red lights, or what.

She didn't talk to me for a whole week.

Back from the LACC event - there'd been some weird miscommunication and they all thought I was somehow just going to hold court for an hour all by my lonesome.  So, we fixed that right away - one of the faculty, a great guy named Les Ferriera, moderated, asked questions and then we did a Q&A.  It was really fun, and got really funny by the end, when I sang a snippet of Dancing Dildos and demonstrated the choreography.  I gave away fifteen books to the students who got there fast enough, then signed for a while.

And on the happiest note of all, two of my clients who were previously considered to be in the country illegally got their green cards today!!   One is a 16 year old artist.  I took the case pro bono and he's going to paint me something as payment.   He won an art contest here, so who knows...

Congrats and great news!  And please post a picture of the picture when you get it! :D

He said he wants to get a good canvas.  I told him there's a spot over my desk. So, whatever it is, it will hang over my desk, at least for awhile.

Do you have a pair of knee-high boots?

You could tuck the bottom of a pair of tan pants in the boots so that they look like jompers, add a sport coat with an ascot add a beret and you can go as a silent film director.

I don't think I've ever had Scotch.

When I was in college, my brother had come to visit me and bought a bottle of scotch. He drank some but left a lot of it.  I thought I hated it, so I didn't touch it until I broke up with a guy and felt so bad I decided to drink the nasty stuff.  I took one sip and burst out laughing....I liked it!  I have had many glasses since then

We are off now on a mission of mercy for my mother - to buy Scotch and deliver it to her.  She's been out for a while and says she can't sleep without it.  Who's gonna argue with someone who turns 92 next month?

I probably won't be back until after my book group meeting tonight - bye for now!

I say let them drink Scotch!
Ditto.

Even when I drank, I couldn't stand the taste of scotch.

I LOVE good aged scotch!!!  No ice for me. :)

LOL.

Great stories today. Am having a few good laughs catching up. Wish my day had been a little humorous. Instead, I'm still fighting with the publisher of the magazine over getting paid for the last issue. Actually my colleague is doing the fighting, but it's stressful enough hearing what she's going through.

After having a very strange night of sleep - strange because I didn't feel like I had slept even though I knew that I had - I hopped on a Bolt Bus down to DC.  Then took the subway out to Arlington, where my brother, Jay, picked me up.  Then we hung out with my parents and some old family friends for a few hours, and then we headed to my nephew's favorite restaurant, TGI Friday's, for his birthday dinner.  And then I ended up meeting up with a friend of mine who happened to get stuck at Dulles for a few hours.

All in all, a very good day.
