Well, you've read the notes, the mood has struck you and you have struck the mood and it's a split decision, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home, which will be whenever the mood strikes them.

As for showstoppers...

The Act One Finale of Dreamgirls which includes "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Goin'".  WOW!

"The Impossible Dream" from Man of La Mancha.  It's amazing just how powerful this song can be, especially in the context of the show.

"Somewhere That's Green" from Little Shop of Horrors.

...And that's all that comes to my very tired mind right now.  I'm sure other DRs will "refresh" my memory throughout the day.

OH!

BK - The conductor/music director for Lestat is Brad Haak.  We worked together last year at Ford's Theatre on Children of Eden, and I recently helped him out up at Vassar on Dangerous Beauty.  He's an amazing pianist, and he's already carved out quite a nice career for himself considering he's not even 30 yet.  Great guy.

Good morning, all!  I'm currently playing the OBC of TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA, and remembering my Wednesday evening in Central Park with Charlotte, who went to her first rock concert last night.  I don't know how she keeps pace with herself, even if she is 16

BK, I have a question about the TOD: Are these numbers we have actually seen onstage or mere wishful thinking?  If actually seen, then the following:
HELLO, DOLLY! title song:  Mary Martin, Ginger Rogers, Carol Channing
"Turkey Lurkey Time":  Original Broadway cast
"Who's That Woman?":  Original Broadway cast
"You Can Dance with Any Girl": National tour starring June Alyson, Dennis Day, Judy Canova
  "Franklin Shepard, Inc.":  Lonnie Price
  "Lily's Eyes":  Original Broadway cast
"Once In Love With Amy":  Noah Racey, Goodspeed
"A Little Priest": Lansbury & Cariou
  "Nobody":  Lynne Thigpen
  "Sons of":  Elly Stone
  "Night Letter":  Jonelle Allen
I honestly cannot remember a showstopping moment in some shows I've loved enormously - 1776 (OBC), A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (OBC), SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE - but I may think of more later.

For those of you who wish to donate to help the hurricane victims and don't want to give to the Red Cross or the Salvation Army, you might check with a local church and see what they are doing. I know that my denomination is big on disaster relief. I have been sent out a few times myself.

DR Jose - In one of your posts yesterday, you mentioned that the conductor asked people who were trying to hold on to an empty seat next to them whether they had bought two seats.  Did you get the impression from what the conductor was saying that if a customer had actually opted to pay for two seats in order to be comfortable in the overcrowded train, that customer would have been allowed to keep the empty seat next to him or her?  Or would that have sparked a revolution from the other passengers?  I know some airlines allow people to buy three seats for two people to keep the "middle" seat empty, but those are reserved seats.  Wondering if it applies to trains, where it's open seating.

Well, the tone in the conductor's voice when he was asking, "Do you have two tickets?" was sort of in jest, but a serious jest.  If someone was just trying to save a seat, then he would kindly ask them to move their bag/bags/food/computer/feet/etc.  However...  I have seen people on Amtrak buy two seats.  On the Reserved trains that is allowable, and you can buy a pair of seats for yourself.  Of course, that probably means you're one of the first people on the train so that you can actually find a pair of seats together.

I still have DOCTOR DOLITTLE to watch the second half of, and at some point, I want to see how HELLO, DOLLY! looks on the HDTV, too.

As for an unwatched-as-yet movie, though, I'm still thinking about that.

At the top of the showstopper list is and always will be "Who's That Woman" at the original FOLLIES. People simply would NOT stop applauding and many stood which doesn't happen often in the theater in the middle of a performance.

Last month at the four NYC shows that I saw, the number that got the hugest ovation was something of a surprise. I was expecting Butz's "Stuff" number to bring down the house, but actually the "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" number got the most prolonged applause. It did stop the show.

Other show stoppers that I can remember:

"Hello, Dolly!" (with Pearl Bailey)
"Charlie's Place" from OVER HERE
"That's How Young I Feel" from MAME (with Ann Miller; they made it a tap number with Ann front and center, and it did stop the show).
"I Hate Men" and "Bianca" in the KISS ME KATE revival.
"Call from the Vatican" from NINE
"We'll Take a Glass Together" from GRAND HOTEL

I'm sure there are dozens that just aren't flooding into my brain.

I think the biggest showstopper I was ever a part of was the "Gambler's Ballet" in GUYS & DOLLS. And thank goodness it did stop the show because we were all so EXHAUSTED at the end of it that we needed those moments to recover for the gambling scene following it and then to be ready to harmonize with Sky on "Luck Be a Lady."

Just No Time at All (mentioned by DerBrucer) - fun song!

I know of some showstoppers, but I haven't seen many.  Hmmmm....

Bon Voyage in a production of CANDIDE at DePauw University many years ago....staged very well and sung very well....just so funny!

Little Girls - Sally Struthers stopped the show with it in Indy a few years ago.

Dreamgirls - the title song...again many years ago in Indy.  The orchestra was rocking and those girls were beautiful....and when the brass started playing those last riffs, they stood up and did some choreography with their instruments (careful) - it was a great piece of business and I have never forgotten those last few notes......  Loved it.  Even in the third balcony.

Brotherhood of Man - featuring Van Johnson and some guy I forget....whew....  The audience loved Van....  He played the Rudy Vallee role and could do no wrong!

Maybe there are others....looking forward to hearing more from the DR's.

Great trivia question.  Will think about it while I work on my script.  I am just going to have to LEARN THE WHOLE THING because there are some people who will NEVER learn their own lines!   GRRRRRRRRRRRR

At least my costume fits - some don't.  And they were NOT getting any help at all from the costumer and her assistant.  And they asked me if I would return some things today and get different ones, and I said....uh...NO.  They wanted the job, do the job from start to finish.  Now you know it's not so easy, folks.  And asking someone else to do it is not fair.  YOU DO IT!!

Oh...a part of....LOL.

Well one night we did stop a production of Hello, Dolly! with the title number.  And you REALLY have to be in shape to do the Waiter's Gallop and then sing and dance with Dolly and END that song UP!  Whew!  Kick line and all, crossing all over the stage, dancing with Dolly, and ending up with knee turns (and throw in a onehanded cartwheel without dropping your towel from your elbow)....whew boy was I young!  LOL.  But we stopped the show.

This is what I miss most about being young - being able to do those acrobatic numbers and not needing to go to the hospital after the show. When I think of what I did in SHENANDOAH and HOW TO SUCCEED and GUYS & DOLLS and WEST SIDE STORY and A CHORUS LINE.

I never got to do DOLLY, but that sounds just amazing.

Yes, and he delivers even in shows that weren't hits. "Tap Your Troubles Away" and the title song to DEAR WORLD, two examples of showstoppers in flops.

We were talking about Edith Head yesterday, and I remember her often appearing on Art Linkletter's House Party as well.  ;D

She did some good work, but could also be a bit repetitive, particularly in her work for some of the 1960's comedies at Paramount.

And I think the following photo is a good definition of "gilding the lily."  8)

One kind of showstopper that hasn't been mentioned yet: At Les Miz, the scenery refused to budge at one point, stopping the action for about five minutes.

More in the tradition of what is intended as a showstopper, there was a moment during "Gettin' Ready Rag," in Ragtime, where Brian Stokes Mitchell got his bowler to land exactly right on his head.  Der B and I saw him do it twice, once in previews and on the Los Angeles opening night, where he had such charisma that the audience reacted, and while it didn't exactly stop the show, it sure caused it to hesitate for a moment.

"Title Song" -- HELLO DOLLY! (Pearl Bailey)
"Title Song" -- MAME (Juliet Prowse)
"A Little Priest" -- SWEENEY TODD (Lansbury / Cariou, Lansbury / Hearn)
"Out There" -- BARNUM (Jim Dale, maybe it wasn't the song, maybe it was walking the tightrope while singing it)
"I Am What I Am" -- LA CAGE (George Hearn)
"And I Am Telling You" -- DREAMGIRLS (Jennifer Holliday - Sorry, but it blew me away)
"I'm Still Here" -- FOLLIES

I'm up, I'm up, and joining the partay.

Excellent choices, and yes, you must have seen the number in question.  Of course, I've seen many of the listed choices, and what's interesting is that what stops the show one night in one production, might not another night in either the same production or a different production.  When I tell people about My Heart Is So Full Of You I usually get, "Didn't stop the show when I saw it" and that's probably true.  I saw it in the round with Robert Weede, and I'm here to tell you they had to literally stand there for three or four minutes until the applause stopped.

When I did High Spirits, we had two - you know, we had good, loyal audiences, but the big Go Into Your Trance number literally knocked them dead, as did Home Sweet Heaven.

I'm glad someone mentioned And I Am Telling You I Am Not Going, and I concure wholeheartedly with Who's That Woman and We'll Take A Glass Together.

Good Afternoon!

Well, just spent about an hour or so with my niece and nephew.   And now I think I'm ready for a nap.  ;)

But I had a wonderful time, and they both greeted me with big hugs and kisses as soon as I walked into the kitchen.  -I was actually kind of surprised that Alyssa was so "open" today - I guess she's growing out of her hesitant phase.  In any case...

Nothing like hugs from children to remind you that there is indeed good in the world.

It looks similar to a shot of Harlow from one of her films in which she wore a "similar" hat.  Could that not have been the "inspiration"?

Hmmm...could be.  I know she had already used the same hat on Debbie Reynolds in HER SIX LOVES.  Head never designed for Jean Harlow, although she did a few things for Mae West, those that West allowed her to do.

When Harlow did a secondary role in the Clara Bow star vehicle SATURDAY NIGHT KID at Paramount, Head may have done a dress or two for her, but it was yeoman work.

You're right, DR RLP.  It looks like a couple of hats Jean wore, probably designed by MGM's Adrian, or some anonymous milliner in the backrooms of Louis B's sweatshop.  :D

I think Edith Head was the only studio costume designer that got regular invitations to the talk shows. She was a star in her own right, even if she thought she should have won EVERY Oscar she was ever nominated for like no one else's creations could compete with hers.

Had a glorious time with the rest of DOCTOR DOLITTLE. Some of the creatures like the Pink Sea Snail are kind of lame (I imagine CGI could make that pretty spectacular now), but the transfer, color, and sound were still quite wonderful.

Then I put in HELLO, DOLLY! It's certainly a very clean and sharp transfer, but I don't know; on my TV, the color looks just the tiniest bit washed out in some scenes. Certainly, the color doesn't burst forth like I remember it doing in the movie theater when I saw it.

The folks who are preparing dinner for me tonight said to bring along some DVDs for us to pick from to watch after dinner. I picked up three or four commercial films (ADAPTATION, LEGALLY BLONDE, SILKWOOD), but I put on top of the stack BROADWAY: THE GOLDEN AGE. Even though I've watched it several times, I know they know nothing about it, and since both really like theater a lot, I think they'll love it.

•   Let me make this clear: Everything which has happened as the result of Hurricane Katrina is my fault. Mine. Alone. No one else's. Stop wasting energy pointing fingers and put your hands to work helping out. It was me. Got it?

•   I was a United States Senator from Louisiana in 2001 when the levee at Lake Pontchartrain was declared unsafe and I didn't have enough clout with my Senatorial brethren to get sufficient money appropriated to fix it. It was my fault.

•   Notwithstanding my failure on that front, according to wire services:

"In a telephone interview with reporters, corps officials said that … the levees near Lake Pontchartrain that gave way … were completed and in good condition before the hurricane.

"However, they noted that the levees were designed for a Category 3 hurricane and couldn't handle the ferocious winds and raging waters from Hurricane Katrina, a Category 4 storm when it hit the coastline. The decision to build levees for a Category 3 hurricane was made based on a cost-benefit analysis in the 1960s. "

•   Oh. I almost forgot. I was the Commander-in-Chief of all United States Armed Forces in the 1960s which includes the Corps of Engineers. The cost-benefit analysis? My fault.

•   It is my fault that, as the Governor of Louisiana, I didn't foresee the need to have enough Louisiana National Guard troops - the vast majority of whom are NOT currently in Iraq, or Afghanistan or, for that matter, Indiana - pre-positioned and ready to preserve order.

•   I, frankly, forgot that there is a portion of the population which will steal anything from anyone given any opportunity and then will blame it on me because I didn't - in spite of ample warnings by sociologists from large Eastern Universities - foresee the need to have 27" flat-screen television sets available to every family in the New Orleans city limits as soon as the electricity went out. That one WAS my bad.

•   It is my fault that, as Mayor of New Orleans, I was boogying down Bourbon Street the night before the hurricane hit rather than being where I should have been - on the roof of the Superdome pounding in extra nails to hold the roof on.

•   As the architect of the Superdome, it was my fault for claiming that the Dome could survive 200 mile-per-hour winds. It couldn't even handle a relatively gentle160 mile-per-hour zephyr. Strap me to my drafting table and set me adrift.

•   Global warming? My fault. Despite the fact that nearly every serious climatologist in America has stated over and over again that there is no clear evidence tying human-generated greenhouse gasses to global warming, and even if there were, there is no evidence tying global warming to hurricanes in the Atlantic basin, I was opposed to the Kyoto treaty and so it is my fault.

•   It is also my fault that during the administration of Bill Clinton the US Senate rejected the terms of the Kyoto protocols by a vote of 95-0. That would be zero, zilch, nada, nil, bupkis.

•   As the Grand Poohbah in Charge of all TV Coverage, it is my fault that there is constant video of looters and almost none of humanitarian activities. I am the person who issued the statement: "No more rescue footage UNLESS the person rescued complains about how long they had to wait or, if he shoots at the rescuers."

•   And, finally, as Chairman of the National Association of Gasoline Producers it is my fault that I had the bad judgment to put so much of my drilling, refining and transportation assets in a hurricane-prone area like the Caribbean basin. What…was…I…thinking?

•   If I could re-do that whole thing, I would have put all that equipment in Lake Erie and Lake Michigan. There may not be any oil there, but hurricanes are very rare.

•   So. There you have it. Everything that has happened is my fault.

•   Now. Shut up and help.

You can post anything you like here, Cillaliz.

Went to Cinecon and hung out for a couple of hours.  Very slow in the Dealer's Rooms - many of them complaining that it's just been dead as a doornail.  Saw a couple of dealer friends, too, which is always nice.  I picked up some theater souvenir programs - some from Broadway, some from the road - got Call Me Madam with Stritch, Cabaret with Signe Hasso (the production I saw here in LA), On a Clear Day from B'way, the tour of Birdie with Joan Blondell, the B'way Music Man with Preston and Cook, the tour of Half a Sixpence (which I saw here in LA).  I'll look through them in a bit.

This is the first weekend since July 23 that I haven't either had to work on Saturday or be involved in some way with my mom and aunt, so I've spent it at home pampering myself and DH Richard and DS Rob.  We had pecan waffles and bacon for brunch, watched Michigan football (a decisive, but not slam-dunk victory over Northern Illinois), and had a taco party for dinner during the second half of the game.  For dessert we had homemade brownies and a choice of cherry chocolate chip or vanilla orange swirl ice cream.

Dear Mr. Bush:

Any idea where all our helicopters are? It's Day 5 of Hurricane Katrina and thousands remain stranded in New Orleans and need to be airlifted. Where on earth could you have misplaced all our military choppers? Do you need help finding them? I once lost my car in a Sears parking lot. Man, was that a drag.

Our family knows where at least one helicopter PILOT is - we received welcome word last night that our nephew Chris, who has been in Iraq since June, is back in the US.  He's an Air Force search and rescue chopper pilot, so we're wondering if he'll be sent to the Gulf Coast.

Daer François,

the other day when you were posting some of the many horrors from New Orleans, you missed the one where the Mayor escorted his tourist friends to the front of the line for evacuation:

Quote
At one point Friday, the evacuation was interrupted briefly when school buses rolled up so some 700 guests and employees from the Hyatt Hotel could move to the head of the evacuation line — much to the amazement of those who had been crammed in the stinking Superdome since last Sunday.

"How does this work? They (are) clean, they are dry, they get out ahead of us?" exclaimed Howard Blue, 22, who tried to get in their line. The National Guard blocked him as other guardsmen helped the well-dressed guests with their luggage.

The 700 had been trapped in the hotel, next to the Superdome, but conditions were considerably cleaner, even without running water, than the unsanitary crush inside the dome. The Hyatt was severely damaged by the storm. Every pane of glass on the riverside wall was blown out.

Mayor Ray Nagin  has used the hotel as a base since it is across the street from city hall, and there were reports the hotel was cleared with priority to make room for police, firefighters and other officials.

Boy do those links look good.

For my money, I don't find any news service reliable or interesting.  They all do what they can to get readers, truth and fact-checking be damned.

Those links do look good, though.  My, my, my (that is three mys).

I've had the ranch rice chips, too, and they are quite yummilicious.  I don't like the barbecue ones so much.  I also bought chocolate ones, but I'm afraid to try them.  Has anyone?

Thanks BK. I didn't feel like I couldn't. I'm just involved in other groups setting up more specific aid funds and we are all venting like crazy about the situation.

Actually, I have an attorney friend who is working with the musicians union in Houston to set up a fund to get aid to the musicians of New Orleans. They are working on including both union and non-union musicians, but the aid will go directly to them. I will definitely post about it here when I have the details.

I think it is great you are doing something to improve the situation.

I spent a long time this afternoon trying to recover my the photos from my February trip to New Orleans from a back-up I made shortly before my lap top crashed (I was sure I had burned them to a CD, but could not find it). The problem is the software I used to back up the computer is the software that crashed the computer.  I was luckily able to install the software, recover them in safe mode and uninstall the software before I totally crashed the computer again.  I'll post a few in a while

One story I haven't seen reported anywhere came from a friend who evacuated New Orleans and is in Baton Rouge with some of the Zoo Keepers from the Zoo in New Orleans. She told us that they - not looters, but someone apparently official - forced the zoo keepers to leave the zoo and they killed the animals. The story was they would either starve or drown so it was more humane. I think it's terribly sad.

While the political brickbats have let up for the moment, let me jump in here and comment on the production of "Annie" I saw today.

I've always thought "Annie" a wonderful, wonderful show as far as "cast recordings" and the Disney TV version went, but I am pleased to report that it is also the terrific theatrical experience I hoped it would be, even this many years later and in a road company.

The girls were just adorable and Marissa O'Donnell as "Annie" was nearly perfect.  At the outset, she shook her "mane" too much and it distracted, I thought, from the effect her first couple of songs would have had being sung with her pure, wonderful voice.

My greatest joy came from Alene Robertson as Miss Hannigan who was, in a word, SUPERB.  She was everything in the role that Carol Burnett was not!!!  She was both winning and lovable and mean and nasty.  You hated her, you loved her, and you cheered for her when all was said and done.

Scott Willis as Rooster was amazingly energetic, robust and fun.  McKenzie Phillips was terrrific as Lily St. Regis.

My only -- read that, ONLY -- complaint is the  "new song -- "Why Should I Change A Thing?" -- giving Oliver Warbucks a first-act solo.

Aside from that song being totally unmemorable, Conrad John Schuck's baritone made it seem nearly monotonic.  "Something Was Missing," his second-act solo, wasn't nearly as mind-numbing.  He was very, very good as Warbucks, but I wish his songs hadn't left me feeling much was to be desired in their delivery.  He was totally wonderful in the group songs, and in "I Don't Need Anything But You."  Of course, the quality of the song helps immensely.

All the rest of the cast were top-notch and the score, save the Warbucks soli, was beautifully sung/performed.  The miking was perfection.

Set design was extremely effective, I thought, and costumes were first-rate.  All visuals, save the actors' faces, looked comparable to photographs I've seen from the original production.

It was a whole lot of fun, and I'm delighted to have experienced/wallowed-in it.

(The Golden Gate Theater in San Francisco, despite being nearly "on" Market Street, is in one of the most undesirably filthy areas of the city.  I was APPALLED at the neighborhood.  I wanted a bath shortly after going in, but settled for washing my hands.)

Discussion about tonight's BIG BROTHER 6.

Do not read, if you have not watched.

Am I the only one who does not get why everyone thinks the last pair has to be split up? I would rather have had Howie nominate Maggie and Ivette (since maggie basically controls everybody).  If you are not going to win, then why does it matter if CBS has to hand out $1M to the winner.  They are a weak team.  I really would have gunned for maggie.

But speaking of maggie, i do not like her, i do not like her, i do not like her.  She goes on to april about how they have to team up since ivette/beau are a team and janelle/howie are a team. YET, when she wins the veto, she has to THINK about whether to take ivette off (that would mean her partner april would go up). April was hysterical when she found out what mags was thinking about doing.  I don't get how maggie can claim to be such a wonderful clean player.  Yet she cannot keep a deal to save her life. UGHHH!!!

Oh and double uggh for who won HOH. This is horrible!

Why is everyone sitting there like lumpen pieces of herring?  Let's get some life going on, let's get some pep and vim and snazz going on.  Food call - what has everyone eaten thus far?

The only thing that I've eaten has been a fish sandwich and a cheesburger...with a very large diet Coke.  I was very hungry when I was out driving about and drove through the golden arches.  That was at about 12:30 this afternoon.  The only other thing I've had was a bottle of sparkling mineral water with "natural orange flavor." :P to sparkling mineral water of any flavor.  There wasn't enough orange flavor (natural or otherwise) and the minerals are not to my liking.  Oh, well, it quenched my thirst. :)

Yeah! Tucker Carlson just said they walked through the French Quarter and none of the antique stores or art galleries were looted and they all looked like they were in great shape!  Only the stores that sold food, cigarettes etc were broken into.  Hmm, that sure makes it seem like looting for survival...

And it's the center of decadence that survived. Guess the god is getting even people were mistaken....

I took 52 pictures with my digital camera and then it died. Right before we stepped into the butterfly garden it froze up - the lens wouldn't even retract it was so dead. So I bought a disposable camera before we headed over to Tiger Mountain and got several close-ups (you're literally only separated from them by 2 inches of glass) and many pictures of various sea lions, vultures, African lions, bison and eagles. Very exciting stuff.

I'm thinking of subscribing to the Wildlife Conservation Society so I can get a year-round pass to the Zoos and Aquarium. It's only $90, and considering the utter enjoyment I got from seeing the animals today, I think it'd be a great place to go to relax and just enjoy a bit of nature. I caught myself squealing - literally - when I'd see an animal come out to say hello. I snapped so many pictures, but sadly only about 40% of them are any good. Guess I'll have to go back and take more! :)

No such runs on anything specific tonight, that I could see.

Earlier, I had leftover spaghetti, which was pretty danged good, if I say so and made it myself, and I do and did.

Tonight, I'm finishing up the leftover pot roast and making hash, with beets on the side.  Should be yummers enough.

I'm restless.  Might have to go for a walk or something.  I've watched two Astaire/Rogers pictures, and was just watching The Outsiders and comparing the original version (which I have on DVD but have never watched) with Mr. Coppola's "rethought" version all these years later, which I got an early copy of.  He's added twenty-two minutes to his film, which originally ran a crisp ninety-one minutes, and which now runs a not so crisp 113 minutes.  Almost ten of those minutes are a new opening to the film.  It's very interesting watching both versions.  The original just bangs you into the film, but the new opening (which was the way the film was shot), starts with a fight (which explains C. Thomas Howell's neck wound in subsequent scenes - it went unexplained in the original version) and sets up the rivalry between the greasers and the socs, as well as introducing in fuller form Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, and Ralph Macchio.  However, you basically get all the same information in the drive-in scene which opens the film, so I understand why Coppola took it out.  I do wish they had both versions on the new DVD - I really detest these "rethought" versions when the original is not included.  Mr. Coppola made the film he wanted to make - at that point, he didn't have people telling him what he could and couldn't do, and so to suddenly, twenty-three years later, decide to rethink it would be like some painter going back to his painting and redoing it just because he "rethought" it.  It's something else if he paints a new version but the original is there at the same time.  But, if you don't go out and buy the original DVD of The Outsiders (who knows if it will still be available) then you don't have the film that was shown in theaters.  Mr. Coppola has also added a bunch of Elvis Presley songs over scenes which played in glorious silence before, thereby pandering to today's ADD kiddie audiences who can't go five seconds without music.  And, what has classic Elvis to do with a film set in 1966?

Have moved from Top Hat to Shall We Dance, but I'm suspecting that watching the Astaire/Rogers films in a row is not a good idea.

You're completely correct. They're wonderful, but like eating one rich dessert after another. So after three of them, I put the box on the shelf and will return to the others at a later date.

Such lovely photos DRCILLALIZ....glad you could recover them.  And nice ZOO pictures as well, DRJASON.

A visit to HHW is like a trip around the country!

Well....when I was about 13 years old....before DRJOEY was born....I watched JAMBOREE on televisioin.  The character that Kay Medford played was so irrititating and grating and off-putting that I have NEVER been able to LIKE her in anything - ANYTHING else I happen to see her in.....even BUTTERFIELD 8!

The WORST WORST WORST though was when she was the "Uncle Charley" character in a John Forsythe series called "To Rome With Love" - widower Forsythe lived in Rome with his three daughters and Medford was an aunt (or something) who came and irritated the hell out of them, and the audience.  I stopped watching after the first few weeks, because she was just TOO MUCH!!!!

And I have to say, that I am another who does NOT donate money or anything else to the Red Cross.  Please do some research on the organization before you do.

One fact you may not know - the salaries of the regional directors is determined by the amount of donations they can generate.  The more money you give, the more money goes into the pocket of the person collecting it.  That is a fact.

I give my time and money to local organizations that have ties to other local organizations who are directly involved with rescue efforts.

That's just ME - do what you want.  But spend your dollars wisely.

I represented a man who did a telemarketing scam.  His company was hired by AmVets to solicit donations. The actual contract was that he got 80% of what he collected and AmVets got 20%. I was shocked that the telemarketer legally got that much. He wanted a little more than that...thus the charges, but still, it was a rip off to those donating even if he hadn't done anything wrong

Oh gee, I gave up too soon.  It seems Kay Medford's Aunt Harriet left the series in the middle of the first season!  (Guess I wasn't the only one who found her annoying)!  :P

She was replaced in the second season by a cantankerous grandfather played by - Walter Brennan!   ;D

Cancelled at the end of the second season.

I recently watched this DVD, DRMATTH and ended up with mixed feelings about it.  I don't think it turned out quite the way it was supposed to.  It has some entertaining moments, but for me the ending is not satisfying.....  :-[

Thanks, DR Ron, for the review of ANNIE. As much as I liked the Disney TV version of ANNIE (with Kathy Bates), the stage version is far superior if you have good actors playing the roles. The score is terrific and there's lots of humor that both the feature film and the TV-movie missed by cutting songs and scenes.

Adding a new song at this late date, almost 30 after the Broadway premiere? Ridiculous! If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.

Judy Kaye played Sally, but Karen Morrow sang "I'm Still Here."  My absolute most favorite performance (that I've seen...not just heard) of the song.

Thank you, George.  I thought that Judy Kaye had played Sally, but I just could not come up with a name of the actress who sang I'M STILL HERE.

Didn't mean to discourage you from watching it.  It has its pleasures, and the soundtrack is terrific - and the characters are really more like people we might have known (or might have been) than we find in a lot of movies today.  ;D

Just watched the very mundane supplement about The Outsiders, and basically Coppola justifies what he's done by saying he's gotten thousands of letters begging him to put back all the scenes that were cut.  That's all fine, but just have the original version as an alternate.

They flew up as many of the cast as were available to Napa to see the new cut, and of course Coppola videotaped everything, which I find tiresome.  Interestingly, only Diane Lane, Rob Lowe, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze and C. Thomas Howell were there.  No sign of Matt Dillon or Tom Cruise or anybody else.

If I may "show off" a moment!
PLAYBILL , 21 Aug. 2005.
"In collaboration with his writing partners Charles Strouse (music) and Thomas Meehan (book), Charnin added a new musical number to the show a couple of years ago, giving Daddy Warbucks another moment in Act One. The song (heard in this the new tour) is called "Why Should I Change a Thing?," and its premiere was in a 2000 Australian staging starring Anthony Warlow. The song was also heard in an Atlanta production that subsequently toured for several weeks in 2004."

"Is "Why Should I Change a Thing?" a trunk song or new?

"It's not a trunk song by any stretch of the imagination," Charnin said. "It was written because the guy --  ( The GUY!! Goodness gracious!)  who played Warbucks in Australia is a wonderful singer named Anthony Warlow. In a kind of genteel way, he said, 'You know it's really a shame that Warbucks doesn't sing as much as I'd like him to.' That was over a lunch meeting when I first cast him. I went away and about two months later I went looking for a place to put this Warlow/Warbucks song in.

Two points:

The first and most significant:  John Schuck is not, in any way, shape or form, anywhere within 10 leagues of Anthony Warlow as a singer...

And second, if Warlow was the reason a new, nowhere-near-as-good-as-the-other-songs-in-the-original-score at this "late" -- anything over 25 years IS almost 30 years -- date, then someone should get a clue that the song minus Warlow's strong voice to sell it is nothing more than a liability.

It was painful coming out of Schuck.

And I'll go even further and say it was a worse idea than "Annie Warbucks."  They mucked up a perfect score.

This is totally one of the trickiest things going.  After the scandalous mismanagement of 9/11 contributions (still up in the air with even victims of the Kansas City bombing of 1994 trying to stake some claims to it) anyone donating willy-nilly might as well throw his or her money in the air and hope it blows southeast.

Put your money into something that will be instantly provided to the victims.

Avoid "special victims fund" come-ons that can be scammed by anyone at any time and anywhere.

Find out what your community is actively sending in way of relief supplies and contribute to that.

Of course, if you know and trust specific organizations that will use your funds specifically for the purpose you intend, then ignore my tirade above.  But KNOW who you're contributing to.

Good Evening!

I ended up meeting up with my friend, Andy, and we went to see "The Constant Gardener".  We both liked it a lot, a very engrossing story.  -And lots of close-ups of Ralph Fiennes amazing eyes!  The one "technical" aspect I kept wondering about throughout the film, is just how does one coordinate crowd scenes?  And there are a lot of them in this movie.  Along with some very stunning, beautiful, heart-wrenching and sobering images of the people and country of Kenya.

Afterwards, it was over to the Silver Diner for a semi-late dinner.  Andy had their Chicken Fried Steak breakfast (eggs scrambled, hash browns and a biscuit), and I had the Fried Clams Platter (house salad with feta vinaigrette, french fries and a biscuit).  All very good.  And our drinks - iced tea and lemonade - came in some of the largest tumblers I've ever seen in a restaurant, about a six-cup capacity if not seven.  We didn't have to ask for refills.

And it was/is a glorious evening here in Fairfax.  Very cool, and the sky is clear.

We went to check out his sister's new house which is currently being fixer-uppered.  It's quite the house!  It was originally a log cabin, but then a separate kitchen and den were built onto it as well as a second floor.  The walls of the living room are the original logs.  The place sits on just over two acres of land.  There's a small farm and a chicken coop, as well as a nice open field.  It's a good distance from the lights of DC, so the starry sky looked quite spectacular from there.

Oh No, William Rhenquist just died. Bush is going to get another Supreme Court Justice..

Surely you suspected that this second appointment would come within his term. If you hope for a moderating influence on W's appointments, sooner is probably better than later. He still has three more years to wrestle with Congress and might have a tendency to compromise a bit. Also, I suspect that the Congress will stall on Roberts until they see a Bush replacement nomination for both the vacant seat and the Chief's hat. With all these factors in play at once, the odds are better for a down-the-middle compromise. Bush will leave both seats vacant before he nominates someone that the left-of-center Senators would accept.

As I have previously posted, I don't think you can find 60 Senate votes for either a demonstrably pro-choice, nor a demonstrably pro-life nominee. That leaves only judicial geldings in the race - professional jurors who can convince an audience that that have no pre-conceived opinion on the choice issue - know any lawyers hiding in a cave in Tibet?

RE: Charities and Where the money goes...

A friend of mine sat through the pitch for one of the police organizations which was soliciting for donations for their "benevolent fund".  After almost agreeing to donate some money to the cause, he asked for more information about how the funds were distributed - which by law, they are required to disclose.  Well, it turned out that only 17% of the money made it to the "benevolent fund".  The rest of it went towards administrative costs of the telemarketing company, and there was also a set percentage that the telemarketing company would receive for each dollar pledged.  In short, more money was "given" to the telemarketing company than was given to the police.

And another example of misdirected funds are some of those homeless advocacy groups that line the streets of New York City asking for dollars, quarters, pennies to be put into their collection buckets - which are old water bottles from water coolers.  Well... It turns out a majority of those funds also go to the company and not to the homeless.  And sometimes the collectors - who may or may not be homeless themselves - are paid directly from the bottle.  -I've seen that happen with my own eyes.  They just tip the bottle, count out some change and bills, and leave while the next shift comes in and gets set up.

It truly is sad the Charity may not always be charitous.

(is that a word - charitous??)
