RE the TOD - Just tonight I was reading an article in which actresses of "a certain age" were bemoaning the fact that they were considered washed up once past 50. Doris Roberts said something sad, but unfortunately true: "...It used to be in the 40's and 50's, every movie you saw had the most wonderful second bananas in it. The Thelma Ritters and the Jimmy Gleasons. They don't exist today. It's as if they keep airbrushing us out of society."

I, too, was watching Leno's very nice tribute to Johnny. I think I saw most of those original shows that they culled clips from. I love K.D. Lang but as she's gotten older and broader, she's starting to look like Wayne Newton.
Favourite character actresses: Beulah Bondi and Fay Bainter. Have to give some thought to fav character actors.

There were so many wonderful character actors! Doris Roberts is right, though. They're being airbrushed out of society. I can't tell you how many times in the past few years I've been told to either cut older characters in my scripts or to make them younger.

Two favs: though some might considered them leading men...Claude Rains & Basil Rathbone.

I don't think character actors were always old. I think the true character actor is a dying breed because today all actors get separate cards and they all make outrageous amounts of dough, and they all think they're stars. Character actors of old had one thing they don't have today, regardless of age: Personality. They were reliable, showed up, did their thing, and went home - thrilled to be employed and always delivering the goods.
And I would be remiss if I didn't list my friend Margaret's father, one of the greats: Dave Willock.

Loved Daniell and loved Cianelli. The first time I ever saw Cianelli was on a flop TV show called Panic! I don't think it lasted more than one season, but I've never forgotten any of the episodes I saw (and this was in 1958, and the shows were never repeated and haven't been shown since to my knowledge). Cianelli appeared in a show where he had a nightmare that a bridge was out and he went plummeting to his death. The dream, of course, comes true, but he's saved in the end. I've actually managed to get about six episodes of Panic, which I still have in 16mm, including a show I always had vivid memories of, with Richard Eyer. I also have four additional episodes on VHS somewhere. But, sadly, the Cianelli episode has remained elusive.

Just read an article today about how women in their 40's and 50's are coming into their own. Imelda and Annette were quoted as saying they are being offered more and more work these days as character leads...and happy to be doing so. Of course, these are really fine character actors to begin with!

What's happened to character actors is the same thing that is happening to middle class actors, writers...the middle class everywhere...their class is being systemically eroded.
But the best example of why the character actor has disappeared can be found in Goldman's book Adventures in the Screen Trade in the chapter called Protecting the Star where he talks about stars now usurping all the good lines in movies. I can't remember all Goldman's reasons for why this is now so prevalent, but I personally think it goes to the fact that once stars were no longer under contract and part of a studio system and went independent, they got their mitts into development and their egos came before ensemble and the balance of the screenplay.
Another character actor I mentioned yesterday: Edward Arnold.

I remember seeing an interview with an impersonator (I forget who, though) and he (I do remember that it was a "he") said that his voice for a young Wayne Newton was the same voice that he used for Brenda Lee!

Oh, my. These early morning log ons with so much to read remind of last December when we were in London and I would log on to find 200 or 300 posts which I could never get through in one sitting since I was in the parlor of our London guest house and others were waiting to use the computer.
We survived the Blizzard. Not so bad, IMHO. It didn't stop me from going out as planned for dinner and a movie with friends. We had made the plans before the news of the blizzard and since I'm from Minnesota, another is from Wisconsin and the third lived in Minnesota for a while, we knew it would not be so bad. Anthony did decide to stay home and curl up with a good DVD. We had a delightful dinner, much chat and then we saw In Good Company, the Dennis Quaid and Topher Grace movie about an older man (52 - yikes my age in little more than one week!) who has to deal with being demoted and working for a 26 year old boss who also falls in love with his college age daughter. Not too bad. We then went to a trendy new dessert place on 9th Avenue and 51st called Puff. They sell fancied up retro desserts like banana pudding with vanilla wafers and their version of a Hostess Snowball (remember those treats?). Again, it was fun, but not great. It was more fun being with good friends and laughing and laughing. I then got on the subway which was running well despite the snow and came home to find my hubby asleep. Oh, well.
We then spent Sunday lazing about, drifting back and forth between bed and food and television, not venturing out at all and then Monday morning I had to return to work. Here I am now having caught up with the posts.
Many of my favorites have been mentioned but I will mention some anyway, mixing my sexes to provide some spice.
Louis Calhern, Billie Burke, Selma Diamond, Dean Jagger, Marion Lorne, Frank Morgan, Cathleen Nesbitt, Edna May Oliver, Charlie Ruggles, Clara Blandick who played Auntie Em in the Wizard of Oz and got NO CREDIT! I could go on but I won't since I have a 9am meeting and it's 8:28 and I must get ready for said meeting.

Good morning, all! I had a lovely phone call last evenng that kept me up past my usual bedtime, so I'm moving rather slowly this morning. Last night I received an invitation to the dress rehearsal tomorrow at the Metropolitan Opera for PELLEAS AND MELISANDE. Fantastic! My friend Bill Burden who sings the Doctor on the recording of MOST HAPPY FELLA with Emily Loesser is singing Pelleas. His beautiful wife Carol played Dory in the production of GREENWILLOW I worked on in Utah. She'll be there as well, so it will be a lovely and festive afternoon.

I think Doris Roberts is wrong in that there are still plenty of character actors out there, but they're on TV, not in the movies. And her lucrative run on EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND is proof positive of that (which also has Peter Boyle and Brad Garrett as regulars and features character actors as guest stars all the time.)

Bollywood movies, even the modern ones, always have a few (sometimes several) character actors in them...it is rare to see a Bollywood film that does not have older people as major or semi-major characters...mothers, fathers, grandmothers, uncles...in fact you find many former leading men and women from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s who are still acting today...making several movies a year....and then or course there are always, I mean always, one or two comedy relief roles in every Bollywood film.

Would you consider Tony Randall a character actor? I'd place him somewhere between a character and a lead, in a category of its own.
Speaking of whom, did anyone else see Larry King's interview with Tony Randall's widow (strange word, widow - she's so young), Heather Randall? I found her to be a breath of fresh air, and would imagine that she and Tony had a delightful marriage.

Frank's sister Mabel Albertson was a fabulous character actress.

Most of the Oscar nominations are well chosen, in my humble opinion (IMHO, in internet lingo), but a best supporting actor nomination to Alan Alda for his scenery chewing in Aviator? What were they thinking?
A real pity, too, that none of these films received even one nomination:

Okay, who are the egregious omissions in the Oscars? I haven't seen enough this year, but I know there are some good folks missing. The absolute joke nomination of the year is Alan Alda's awful scenery-chewing Oscar bait performance in The Aviator, and also that film's screenplay nomination. Whatever one may think of the film, clearly the screenplay is not its strongest asset. Of course, a few of my favorite performances this year were in French films, as were most of my favorite scores. I'm now starting to have the feeling that Miramax, the most shameful of all studios, Oscar-wise, will now attempt to buy the award for Mr. Scorsese and The Aviator. I did find it odd that Mike Leigh got up and his film didn't, and conversely, that Finding Neverland got up and its director didn't. I think the supporting actor nomination for Jamie Foxx's leading role in Collateral is a sad joke, while his leading actor nomination for Ray is well-deserved. So, who is missing?

"Fahrenheit 9/11" didn't get any nominations...not even Best Documentary Feature. ::)

Michael Moore didn't submit his film in the documentary category hoping instead for a Best Picture nomination. It sadly didn't happen.
Disappointed that KINSEY didn't make a better showing. I've read lots of good stuff about Jamie Foxx's work in RAY, but I haven't read that much good about RAY itself. Surprised it got in there instead of ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND or KINSEY.
Yep, that was mere strategy on the studio's part suggesting Foxx was suporting in COLLATERAL. He's definitely the leading role, a bigger part than top billed Tom Cruise. Ludicrous.

And I'm sorry that Mr. Hanks didn't get a nomination for his lovely performance in The Terminal, and I'm sorry that Mr. Williams got up for the Harry Potter film and not The Terminal. I also can't remember if The Terminal is up for art direction but if it isn't that branch of the Academy ought to be ashamed of itself - of course, these people are so ill-informed they probably thought the film was shot in a real airport.

While I didn't love Ray, I did like it better than Kinsey.
I am, well, "happy" isn't the word, but I'm whatever I am to see that DeLovely and Beyond the Sea got no nominations that I could find. Am I right about that?

Hmmmmmmm.....well I shall have to consider those nominees. Perhaps they were hedging their bets and will vote for Mr Foxx as "supporting" actor and ignore his "lead" nomination....ala Jessica Lange who was awarded a "supporting" statuette for TOOTSIE and nominated and lost the "leading" award for "FRANCES" to Meryl Streep in SOPHIE'S CHOICE - a well-deserved win.

As for the Oscar noms... Interesting. Very interesting. I really was hoping that "A Home At The End of the World" would have at least received a nom for Best Adapted Screenplay.

After I asked my question about Phil Carey (charmingly answered by DR JRand), I realized that the daytime dramas are rife with character actors, some of whom were leading players in their earlier careers.
The late Ruth Warrick, Eileen Herlie, James Mitchell, David Canary, and of course MacDonald Carey are just a few that come immediately to mind.
Then there are those who are daytime drama stalwarts, but who still do some mighty fine acting: Marilyn Chris, Sally Gracie, Nancy Pinkerton all hail from one of One Life To Live's heydays.

Back from the computer store. After lunch, I just felt like getting out of the house, and that's where I ended up.
I almost became a Mac User this afternoon. Almost. As I had thought, some of the resellers are starting to drop the prices on the current configurations. I was just looking at the basic iBook - I don't need anything fancy. It was being offered at a "Manager's Special" of $200 off the regular price. Sooooo tempting. Alas, I left the store the way I came in, empty handed. So...
However, on the way out, I started looking at some of the accessories available for my iPAQ Pocket PC (I won it two years ago from an online sweepstakes!). Well, there was a lot more to look at than I thought. Programs, accessories, etc. For just about $200, I could outift my Pocket PC with enough peripherals to make it almost as fully functional as my laptop. And that would even include a wireless card! So...
With all the expected unexpected expenses coming up in the next few months - getting out of Richmond, getting up to New York City, etc. - I just really need to watch my pennies right now. A new laptop would be wonderful, but I can make do for now with what I have. Additionally, I just don't want to start using my credit cards again no matter how tempting - and how easy! - that can be. We shall see.

He is from Atlanta, GA, and was a lifelong (but much younger) friend of the late Jim Whaley (my best friend since junior high school). Cliff did theater and some B movies, but his interest in art led him to L.A. His site features a "Cinema Showcase" section...and Jim Whaley was host of "Cinema Showcase," a syndicated PBS weekly program in which Jim interviewed folks from all walks of entertainment. The "Cinema Showcase" section has video clips of interviews with the likes of Debbie Reynolds, Goldie Hawn, Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise.
I met Cliff once in 1975 for a brief ride from his home to some place he had to go. I was visiting Jim while I was on leave.

I'm not thrilled...I'd love to have seen "The Aviator" be nominated (it's won most other awards, but the music branch disqualified scores that featured substantial amounts of music "other than predominantly 'original'" motifs. Of course, the "Harry Potter..." score has some repeated themes, but there was apparently more original music than not (Anne Dudley's "The Full Monty" would never have qualified for consideration under current rules).
I'm thrilled to see "The Village" on the list. I very much liked the film, but I love the score. I'm not fond of Debney's mish-mash at all, and I'm sure it will win just "because." I think it's wonderful to see "Finding Neverland" on there.
I'm not familiar with the other scores, but I'm very GLAD to see Horner's "Troy" and Vangelis' "Alexander" were not among them.

I've not seen Million Dollar Baby yet, but as far as I'm concerned I won't begrudge Finding Neverland any award it wins. My favourite film of the year. Johnny Depp is simply the best young actor working today.

The list was compiled from our old computer system (which is no longer available) just before it went away. The new computer system, however, doesn't seem to have an equivalent function. And I'm sorry that Mr. Hanks didn't get a nomination for his lovely performance in The Terminal, and I'm sorry that Mr. Williams got up for the Harry Potter film and not The Terminal. I also can't remember if The Terminal is up for art direction but if it isn't that branch of the Academy ought to be ashamed of itself - of course, these people are so ill-informed they probably thought the film was shot in a real airport.
I did not see the film The Terminal, but I read somewhere that it was shot at Mirabel Airport outside Montreal. It was supposed to be a major International Airport in the style of European airports. But it became a white elephant when major airlines opted to go to Toronto instead of switching to Mirabel. Since the airport has closed all major international flights have reverted to Dorval International (Now Pierre Elliot Trudeau)

As i was sitting here, wondering what to post... A fire engine drove down my street. Followed by one of their smaller vans. But no sirens. (Floor to ceiling window next to my desk.) Exciting? No.
I'm sitting here with spoons - the instrumental kind - on my lap. These spoons were a souvenir of Newfoundland from many years ago -- and DD threw them out in a cleaning frenzy last week. I retrieved them because I like the sound of spoons. It turns out that the Wonderdog is terrified of The Spoons. So when he starts barking at something in the street, all I have to do is play the spoons for a beat or two and he lies down. Exciting? No. Interesting? Perhaps.
Okay, must take Wonderdog for his post-dinner walk, and get back to writing.

They're somewhat different from the WGA Nominations. For instance, MEAN GIRLS is nominated in the WGA adapted category. I can't remember the other differences and I've sent in my ballot. When I have time, I'll check it out on the WGA site.

First, I had NO idea that playing spoons required special spoons...much less, "instrumental spoons."
Second, are you certain it's The Spoons that wonderdog is terrifed of rather than simply being scared of the "way" you play them?

The only original screenplay film I've seen was Vera Drake which I quite liked.
Of the three adapted ones I've seen, I loved Finding Neverland and Sideways. Anything they win is all right with me.
I already expressed here rather vehemently how much I despised the pretentious pseudo-intellectual claptrap of Before Sunset. It is mystifying to me how such a badly "written" script, trying so hard to be naturalistic and "deep" and coming off only phoney and shallow and full of baloney, could get nominated at all. I suspect it got nominated for a WGA award because it was one of the few screeners we got this year. One of the most tedious films I've sat through in the last several years

You're right in that special spoons aren't needed for spoon playing. But THESE spoons are special in that there are two spoons on one handle, configured so that they "play" easily.
Wonderdog is a bit of a wuss when it comes to loud or strange noises. Thus his fear of the spoons.

I have just returned from dinner with cyber son, Jed. We tried a new Mexcian place in the area that I had heard good things about. I was a wussburger and went for the plain old 3 tacos, rice, and beans. Actually they were quite wonderful. Jed, on the other hand, went for some massive burrito on steroids that looked quite fabulous and that he said was quite tasty. (Sorry, no photos)
After dinner, I suggested we take something back for ailing cyber daughter Ann, but Jed said, "Let her get her own damn food," or words to that effect.

In the home theater layout I've been working on with my friend John, his new TV and cable box both had HDMI ports. Supposedly connecting these gives you a purely digital connection as opposed to using the three component inputs for HDTV. The TV looks great using the components jacks, but I surprised them tonight with an HDMI cable and went over to try it out tonight expecting the picture to be even purer and more vibrant (like in every review I've read of set0ups that use it instead of component).
Anyway, we got nothing. I thought there might be a conflict of signals, so we unattached all of the other hook-ups, but still nothing. I was very disappointed. Can't imagine why it's not working.

My brother had a similar issue. I can't remember the exact solution, but I do recall him mentioning that he had to set up the TV to "turn on" the HMDI connection via some Setup Menu on the TV. Additionally, he also had to go back and get the right cable... I think.
There's also a specific way you need to hook up the HMDI cable(s) if you are going through a cable box for the signal.
-Oh, and does your friend have digital cable service or just the box? -Never hurts to ask....
This probably didn't help... My brother was just here a few minutes ago... If I can track him down, I'll see he has any definite help for you.

I am also one who is thrilled that the soundtrack to THE VILLAGE was nominated.
No surprises that I'm a fan of the film, but the music was wonderful and certainly stands on its own.

The clothing rack is successfully assembled! Okay, it collapsed on top of me once, but didn't cause permanent injury. This is a much sturdier model than the last one. And now that it's all put together it should last.
Now I'll take the temporary half-broken one down to the garbage area in the lane behind the house. It'll probably be gone by morning. The other day I put a torn, paint-splattered suitcase out there. Gone.
I also put two dog puke covered blankets INTO the garbage can. They were also gone by morning. That's actually very sad - that someone would feel the need for those. A crazy world we live in. 40 million for Inagural balls, but people have to steal dog barf-covered blankets from the garbage.

My favorite food of the day was the sample I got at See's (and I also bought a few pieces). And chestnuts are up there on the fave list, too.

Only exteriors were shot at that airport. The entire interior of The Terminal's terminal was one gigantic practical set.
I saw an HBO "The Making of The Terminal" it was amazing the detail they went into in creating the airport interiors.

As I said, The Terminal is totally unappreciated by those who should know better (that branch of the Academy) because I'm sure all those dunderheads thought it was a real terminal. If you watch the extras on the DVD you see them start from scratch and assemble the thing piece by piece. Amazing work.

You're right in that special spoons aren't needed for spoon playing. But THESE spoons are special in that there are two spoons on one handle, configured so that they "play" easily.
I have a set of spoons like that. Very easy to play.

Everything is assembled. I dragged the old rack down to the gabage, as well as the huge box for the new rack. I also set up the phone I got to replace the phone I'm returning because the ring was driving me nuts. My new phone is the berries. I will take a photo.
