Well, you've read the notes, the notes were fat-free, and now it is time for you to post until the fat and the lean cows come home.

DR Cillaliz - fabulous photos, and I have really enjoyed hearing about your impressions of New Orleans.  Since it has dropped out of the news, people tend to forget the ongoing problems there.

Tomato and Goat Cheese Tarts
Ina Garten

Prep Time: 30 min
Cook Time: 25 min
Serves:  4 individual tarts

Ingredients

1 package (17.3 ounces/2 sheets) puff pastry, defrosted
Good olive oil
4 cups thinly sliced yellow onions (2 large onions)
3 large garlic cloves, cut into thin slivers
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
3 tablespoons dry white wine
2 teaspoons minced fresh thyme leaves
4 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan, plus 2 ounces shaved with a vegetable peeler
4 ounces garlic-and-herb goat cheese (recommended: Montrachet)
1 large tomato, cut into 4 (1/4-inch-thick) slices
3 tablespoons julienned basil leaves

Directions

Unfold a sheet of puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and roll it lightly to an 11 by 11-inch square. Using a 6-inch wide saucer or other round object as a guide, cut 2 circles from the sheet of puff pastry, discarding the scraps. Repeat with the second pastry sheet to make 4 circles in all. Place the pastry circles on 2 sheet pans lined with parchment paper and refrigerate until ready to use.

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.

Heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium to low heat and add the onions and garlic. Saute for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring frequently, until the onions are limp and there is almost no moisture remaining in the skillet. Add 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon pepper, the wine, and thyme and continue to cook for another 10 minutes, until the onions are lightly browned. Remove from the heat.

Using a sharp paring knife, score a 1/4-inch-wide border around each pastry circle. Prick the pastry inside the score lines with the tines of a fork and sprinkle a tablespoon of grated Parmesan on each round, staying inside the scored border.

Place 1/4 of the onion mixture on each circle, again staying within the scored edge. Crumble 1 ounce of goat cheese on top of the onions. Place a slice of tomato in the center of each tart. Brush the tomato lightly with olive oil and sprinkle with basil, salt, and pepper. Finally, scatter 4 or 5 shards of Parmesan on each tart.

Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown. The bottom sheet pan may need an extra few minutes in the oven. Serve hot or warm.

Thanks for the Travel Vibes once again. *And I have two more round trips to make in the next 10 days, so keep 'em coming! In any case...

The bus ended up leaving Richmond right on time at 12:30am, and we arrived down on Allen St. in Chinatown right at 5:30am(!!!!!). I guess when the driver said he was going to drive straight thru to New York City, he meant it!

*Of course, the trip up from Grand St. to 145th on the D train took an hour, but six hours door-to-door still ain't bad at all.

DR Cillaliz - Thanks for the "tour" and the pictures. Was the tour you took part of the rebuildng effort? Or was it run by a private company?

The tour is by a private company but they donate a portion of the proceeds they get to 4 different organizations including Habitat and the Brad Bitt 9 something organization.  I don't have the brochure handy or I could tell you all of them.

We also stopped at a little restaurant/liquor store/bar in the lower 9th to use the facilities.  They were the first business to re-open and it's where Bush ate when he was there (our guide said because it was the only place he could eat there).  Anyway, they didn't really give us time to order food - I still got a BLT to go, I felt like I should - but they were very welcoming so I have a feeling they get paid something from the tour company for the use of their facilities by the tours.
Title: Re: THE FAT AND THE LEAN
Post by: Cillaliz on February 28, 2009, 05:36:34 AM
The guide told us that people initially were upset by the tours going through their neighborhoods and would give a wave using less than all of their fingers, but that has changed.  The tours aren't just about devastation, although realizing the area flooded was the size of Delaware is a bit shocking, they are about the spirit of the people to rebuild, the struggles they are having and how much they appreciate the help that has literally come from all over the world.

The people now get that the tours keep attention on the need for continuing support and they waved to us and smiled as we went through the neighborhoods. It's been the people who are helping the people of New Orleans not the government. Boy is THAT clear.   Other than a couple houses, we were told that Bradd Pitt was the first to start building in the Lower Ninth and That changed things and others have followed suit.   There were modular homes and only one trailer (we saw a FEMA trailer that was tiny).

Feb 28 ends the rent subsidies from the government.  The problem is there still is a lack of jobs and a lack of housing here and the rents doubled or tripled after Katrina.  So apparently there are many people who will no longer be able to afford the rent after this weekend.

The guide also told us the first year after the Hurricaine was very very depressing and difficult and there were many suicides. It's getting better.

You don't see debris too much, although you do still see many abandoned houses. We saw one that has the hole in the roof where people tried to escape - hopefully successfully.

Post by: Cillaliz on February 28, 2009, 05:45:07 AM
We took the St Charles streetcar, that wasn't running for a while after Katrina. Anyway, along that route and in the Quarter you really don't see much because there wasn't a lot of damage here - it's the highest ground in town.  But it's different than it was last time I was here. There aren't as many people here. The economy is partially to blame for that.  Bourbon street seems to have more of an edge to it - more of the barely legal sex shops and louder rock music, not as light a feeling as I used to get walking down the street and hearing jazz and blues.  I guess a lot of  that has moved to Frenchman Street.

I'm really glad I'm here. I wish the organization had arranged for us to help work on some houses or something.  I feel like I'm not really doing much.  Guess that's part of the reason I want to talk about it

My work project for the day is the Blu-ray of CADILLAC RECORDS. It has an interesting cast (including a favorite of some DRs here, Adrian Brody). Looks to be filled with music, so I'm actually looking forward to it. It's only 106 minutes and there appear to be about four featurettes along with the commentary, so I should have some free time later tonight to watch something for fun.

Oh, and last week I was at the reading for The First Nudie Musical in La-La-Land (Cason's girlfriend and I played the two lesbians, but alas we had no lines, no songs, no dance numbers, no action -- we just "sat there like so much fish" ... what's with that?! I will have to speak to the writer/producer/director about that!). It was fun, and I enjoyed seeing our Gran Pooh-Pah's house (it and his neighborhood were most charming) and seeing his "the long-jog" new self. He's looking fit as a fiddle (and you know how fit fiddles can look).

The film PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1962) was the film that I saw on a double bill with THE UGLY AMERICAN the night of November 22, 1963.  My mom sent me to the movies to get away from the non-stop coverage of the Kennedy assasination.

THE GUARDIAN (http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/feb/26/toilet-roll-america)

Quote
American taste for soft toilet roll 'worse than driving Hummers'

Extra-soft, quilted and multi-ply toilet roll made from virgin forest causes more damage than gas-guzzlers, fast food or McMansions, say campaigners

Americans already consume vastly more paper than any other country — about three times more per person than the average European, and 100 times more than the average person in China.

Barely a third of the paper products sold in America are from recycled sources — most of it comes from virgin forests.

"I really do think it is overwhelmingly an American phenomenom," said Hershkowitz. "People just don't understand that softness equals ecological destruction."

So, it's down to this: My Charmin or the planet.

Goodnight, Moon; Goodnight, Earth

We still have 11 roles of single ply that Woody bought by mistake - I have banned them from the bathroom. And, TP from recycled paper is one step up from corn-cobs

On Oscar night some one asked about the white ribbons:

LA TIMES (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/alltherage/2009/02/lapel-watch-whi.html)

Quote
Lapel watch: White ribbon for equality?

At several recent high-profile events, including the Grammy, Academy and Spirit awards in Los Angeles and a Broadway concert Tuesday night, the strip of white fabric, with a knot tied in the middle, has been worn as a symbol of marriage equality, and it was created by Angeleno Frank Voci.

I tracked down Voci on Wednesday, and he told me he had been motivated by the November passage of Proposition 8, which made marriage between same-sex couples illegal in California. He said his main goal was to keep the dialogue going and awareness high after the initial rallies and protests died down.

"I was thinking about causes and ribbons and was just playing around with a piece of ribbon and tied it in a knot and had this 'eureka!' moment -- 'tie the knot' -- it's perfect!"

I have discovered that my new bifocals are useless for sustained reading and computer use.  Fortunately, I have a separate pair of glasses for those tasks.

Welcome to the land of AARP. As we age our presbyopia decreases our depth of field at near and intermediate ranges - to keep an entire computer screen, or a page of a book, in focus requires a particular lens - I have made the journey from regular glasses, to bi-focals, to tri-focals and ended up with progressive lens with a customized gradient (more bifocal). I still need a separate pair of fixed-focus glasses for the computer. By locking down the focal range to 12-24" I can use the keyboard, read most reading material, and browse the screen in comfort. Driving is still a chore with the progressives - if I keep my head level to watch where I am going, I can not glance down and see the instrument panel in focus. (Which is why pricey cars have heads-up projections on windshields).

I had time this afternoon to go ahead and watch all of the bonus features on CADILLAC RECORDS (wanted to watch the movie tonight). There was a making of documentary that was really just an EPK puff piece with everyone extolling everyone else's genius on the shoot. There was a more interesting feature on the costumes and production design for the movie (set in the 1950s). There were five deleted scenes none running more that two minutes.

It had me hooked from the git-go. They spend minimal time on character back-stories for the regular cast (and even that is often tied into the drama at hand). More than most of the procedurals, the event-of-the-week usually has a compelling personal story; in fact, the "procedural" elements are often a minor player.

Back from errands and two hours in the editing room - I got a little snippy with the editor, who'd arrived late and had done very little - he sort of wants to have me do the work, I think, but I want him to do the pickups and let me finesse them.  I did a few things for the two hours and then came home - the Handy Man is here and fixing things.  He doesn't expect me to do anything, unlike the editor.  After he's gone, I'll go get something to eat, and then around six I have to deliver a box o' CDs to a dealer.  So, "me" time is not happening today - there's always tomorrow.  I do hope to get to watch a motion picture later.

I went to peck at some bones at Circuit City today.  I really didn't expect to find anything, but I did come across a network adapter for my Wii and a pair of ethernet cables.  The shelf price stated that they were 19.99 and 28.99 respectively, but when I took them to the register they rang up to 10.99 and 11.99 each.

Still, even though I never had much love for the Circuit City stores, it was rather sad to see it in such a state.  These bigbox stores once reflected the boom economic times and the country's love affair with the very latest technical gadgets.  Today it looked like a big indoor flea market with a lot of junk that no one really wants.

I have a pair of reading glasses that I use on the computer and when doing any desk work or while reading in bed. So much easier! And now, because I just don't think it's right to sweep this under the rug any longer.  As most or all of you know, we had a contretemps a couple of weeks ago with someone who only comes here when it serves his purpose - which means he has rarely come here.  He was rude, he was, in my opinion, wrong to harvest e-mail addresses and PMs from this site - very presumptuous if you ask me.  I didn't make a huge deal out of it, but he thought I did, and then it escalated from there, and I refused to play that game, even though I wanted to.  Privately, he e-mailed me several of the rudest e-mails I've ever received and to those, since they were private, I responded in kind, equally as rude.  Fine and dandy.  These sorts of people, however, always show their true colors and their true colors always speak more eloquently than I ever could.  In his case, he kept telling me he'd received all sorts of e-mails supporting him and dissing me - and to prove his point, he forwarded me a PM from a dear reader, who did exactly that.

It wasn't multiple e-mails, so perhaps that was the only one he'd received because I really believe had he received others he would have sent them - that's the sort he is.  I was very upset by the PM, which was very critical of me - knocking books that obviously hadn't been read (my work went downhill after the first book or first couple of books, said this person, even though as far as I know never read any of them post Writer's Block (and I'm not sure he read that).  He went on to state that he never read the notes because he didn't care about my day.  He said I was possessive of the people on this site (say WHAT?), and on and on, including the statement that it was MY fault that we'd lost several dear readers (say WHAT?).

I wrote him a note saying that his PM had made me sick to my stomach and that I was sorry he felt that way.  As far as I know, he has never bothered to read that PM (this was confirmed to me by someone who's been in touch with him).  Now, you must understand, I have never EVER been anything but supportive and kind to this person dating back to the days of The Real A.  Never an unkind word from me, and total support through various travails.  So, why would he have this horrible attitude towards me, and yet keep coming to the site, taking everyone's support, and getting whatever benefit he got?  To me, that would be like going to a party at someone's home, and you despising the someone whose home it is, but going anyway because you like the guests.  That's a little odd if you ask me.  But ultimately there is a reason for all this and it all stems back, as I mentioned, to the Pogue/Panni debacle.  Somehow I became the villain in that piece, and it continues to this day, I guess.  In reality, I had nothing to do with it, other than trying to calm the waters.  When the waters were finally calmed, one of the parties could not let that be and couldn't stop trying to roil them, and it wasn't Pogue.  I banned the other party for a few hours, until I had a telephonic conversation with her, and I told her I would lift the ban if she promised to stop.  She did, and I lifted the ban.  But hell hath no fury like a woman banned - she basically left the site, and she began a series of "behind the scenes" e-mailing to as many people as she could - basically saying what a horrible person I was and how poorly I treated her.  Now, the latter was entering personal territory and had nothing to do with this site - nor, I may add, was it true.  But I'm not going into that - but her e-mail campaign worked for certain people and we lost wonderful regulars like Jay and Dan-In-Toronto.

When PennyO did her show in New York and many of us went, the people who attended the post-show dinner all saw first-hand what was really happening, and each and every one of them came to me and told me they'd been e-mailed but that they now saw what it was really about.  I was, at least for those folks, somewhat vindicated, because yes, there are two sides to every tale.  I mention this only because that was, apparently, when the person changed his opinion of me.  In fact, he visited LA and didn't call ME but called her and saw her.  It's pretty obvious to anyone with eyes.  That whole period was a bit upsetting to me because everyone just seemed so willing to believe her, without even asking me if it was true.  But we go on, and life goes on.

But now we've lost another dear reader thanks to all that.  Hopefully he learned a little lesson - not to send PMs to people he doesn't really know and shouldn't trust.  I would have thought some response from him would have been nice, but, alas, it was not to be.  It was not my intention to make him leave the site, but I suppose he was embarrassed that I'd seen what he'd written.  If he would have, at any point, asked me if what he'd been told was true, I could have straightened him out.  But, it's just easier and more fun to believe the lies, I guess.

And so, I'm sure most of you have noticed that tomovoz has left us.  What I want everyone to know, and I mean EVERYONE, including someone who I've known for forty something years, is that I am NOT the villain, I have never been the VILLAIN, and this, in fact, has nothing to do with me, as much as certain types would like to have it be.  All I have ever done in terms of this here site is try to make a positive, wonderful, supportive place for people to come.  Do we have friction occasionally - sure.  Have some of us gotten unnecessarily snippy - sure.  Do we get over it?  Sure.  Because the bottom line is this is a pretty wonderful place.  I'm sorry tomovoz left - I'm more sorry that he feels the way he does, because a lot of that feeling, I think, stems from being told untruths.  I have no doubt there is e-mailing going on behind the scenes still, which is why I felt it necessary to set the record straight.

And that's the way I see it.

True Jeanne, and similiar to my problem I solved by removing most of the reading section.  I believe the difference between Ginny & us is hers are bifocals vs progressive.  Progressive might solve the computer problem.

I find tilting my head to different angles helps.

Another Eurotrash production leaves the composer in the dust. Be glad it wasn't the one in which Constanza is beaten and raped and several simulated sexual acts occur. Caused quite a rumpus about two years ago in Germany.

We didn't have enough rain this year for a good wildflower year. Maybe some stuff will bloom in March.

"OUR TOWN" SPOILER WARNING - NEW DRAFT OF PARODY OF THE NEW PRODUCTION'S COUP DE THEATRE, with thanks to JoseSPiano and to PlayWiz of All That Chat

From ON OUR TOWN (to the tune of NEW YORK, NEW YORK, IT'S A HELLUVA TOWN)

(verse, moderately)
This play Our Town is for teachers and for scholars
That’s what the pundits claim
Sales should be down ‘cause the folks who pay the dollars
Are turned off by the name

But our business will cook
Got a sizzling hook
So our game
Is to light a flame

(a bit livelier)
It’s pork!  It’s pork!
Theater won’t be the same!

(with energy)
It's pork, it's pork
A helluva coup
The bacon fries and the people go "ooh"
The most acclaim since the concert by Stew
It's pork, you dork -
A theatrical coup

The way it goes is this feller David Cromer
Caught lightning in a cup
The critics' noses are noting the aromer
And now their thumbs are up

Yeah it's makin' 'em hot
'Cause the bacon is what
Sells this pup.
Now let's go sup

On pork, on pork
It's makin' 'em kvell
Just think of all the concessions we'll sell
They're held in thrall by that helluva smell
It's pork, it's pork
It's a helluva smell!

We’ve seen revivals put on by Greg’ry Mosher
And by James Naughton too
But bacon live, though it’s not completely kosher
Sticks to the ribs like glue

Though Miss Piggy might chafe
We’re all jiggy with traif
And so nu
Let’s cue the crew

More pork. more pork
A gimmick with chops
The ham onstage even crackles and pops
Pig-malion’s next and we’ll use the same props
It’s pork, it’s pork
Yeah, the praise never stops

(dance break)

New pork. new pork
Our biggest expense
We closed the door so it’s filling the vents
So three cheers for the olfactory sense
Real pork, real pork
Say to hell with pretense!

My day has been spiffy, to say the least.

Shortly after six in the morning, I was awakedned from my drowsy state by a telephonic call from work.  It was Larry (who is all of two days older than I), rather desperately trying to get someone to come in to work because one of our staff had called out.

I shambled out of bed, and after giving appropriate doggie biscuits to the pack for their breakfast, I called Larry back and told him I'd be in as soon as I could.

I got there by six-thirty, or maybe a couple of minutes after, and put in an eight hour day.  Then I came home and managed to work in a nap.

It doesn't get much spiffier than that.

No, capes don't work with Fu Manchu moustaches.  Capes either work with clean-shaven (super-hero, y'know), or with muttonchops and Van Dykes (for going to the opera, preferably with a silk top hat).

In my experience, and now Keith's, prescription reading glasses work better than the one's from the drugstore or even the pre-made ones at the doctor's office.  Of course if you don't use them very often then the pre-made ones are fine.

All this talk about DR Ginny's new progressive lenses and their faults has me very wary.

I am reticent.  Oh yes, I am reticent.

Are "reading glasses" those cheap magnifiers that you see at the drug store, or are they actual prescription lenses with a different Rx than your normal glasses?

Yes, and yes.

Hey, if the cheap gizmos from the drug store work, fine and dandy.  If the glasses you get from the magic shoppe with the springs attached to the fake eyeballs do it for you, then... well, then I guess you don't do much reading.

But reading glasses working from a prescrition can be a godsend for some people.  The lower section of my glasses were supposed to be like that.  I find it easier to simply take my glasses off and do my reading and a lot of the work in the office that way.

Well, much against my will, I now have another show to add to my viewing list. I have been eager to pare down my list to open up some more time, and now FLASHPOINT gets added to the weekly list. I watched my first-ever episode while I ate lunch today, and by the end I had tears streaming down my face. I was just expecting a police procedural. It was that but very emotional. I loved last night's episode.

Did you watch the latest episode or are you beginning from the first season?

I watched last night's episode, but I'll catch the reruns as they pop up.

And, DE der Brucer, no, I haven't sampled ELEVENTH HOUR. Something will have to be dropped for me to take on another show. So, as long as LIFE or LIFE ON MARS runs (they seem in more imminent danger), no more new shows!

DR Matt H. - I was just wondering if it is ever confusing for you, for movies you have not previously seen, to see the deleted scenes before viewing the feature.

I had never done this before, so I thought I'd try it. Not confusing at all, but made a couple of climactic moments in the film rather anticlimactic seeing them in context. I won't say I'll never do this again, but as an experiment, it didn't really work other than let me use my time wisely this afternoon.

I began my evening watching CADILLAC RECORDS. I liked the film, but I couldn't help feeling it was too ambitious for its own good. Too many stories, all interesting, squeezed into 108 minutes. Not enough time to give each of these interesting personalities his due.

The music, of course, was a tonic. Best part of the movie.

Well, the wimpy people were ready to leave after about a mile and a half. So after we all got back to the church, Barbara and I hopped in the car and took off on our own. We hiked another couple of miles in a different location.

We didn't have enough rain this year for a good wildflower year. Maybe some stuff will bloom in March.

For wildflowers come here in July and hike Mt. Ashland with me.

I find it very frustrating to drive far & then hike a short distance.  I'm glad you had the option to split with Barbara.

You are always welcome to come up here and hike.. I love going to Itasca

I wanted to come upstairs to write at about 9:45, so I couldn't start on anything new and have hopes of finishing. Then I spied on the shelf THE BONE COLLECTOR which I had seen once a year or two ago but put back in tonight and got very caught up in the story. However, it still had a good ways to run, so I stopped at a logical place in the movie and may have a chance to watch the rest of it tomorrow.

Unfortunately, I lost some of the best (a Blue Jay came back to visit) and we had a flock of Doves.  It seems I inadvertently turned on the flash, so the reflection from the window glass wiped out the pics. Good Evening!

I had a very good day.  I ended up leaving the apartment around 11:00 to head down to the Lower East Side to meet up with some friends who had flown in from L.A. for the weekend - as well as some other locals.  Well, we went here, we went there.  We ate this, we ate that. Then we walked to a few more other places. Then we met up with even more folks for some dining and imbibing...

And I just got about about an hour or so ago.  And since I think I only got about an hour's worth of sleep last night, and about a 30 minute nap this morning, well...

Goodnight.

DR DtM just this morning I was reading many of the non-returnable items from Circuit City are broken & don't work.

DR Jane, I was wondering about that as I saw many people looking over and contemplating purchases of such items as display modes of HD TVs, PCs and laptops.  I don't recall any warning signs of no refunds, either.  The buyer should really beware, in this case.

I got my TV last year at Circuit City and it was a display model (and I got the deal of a lifetime!).  But so far, I've had absolutely no problem with it...except that the subtitles don't work when I watch a hi-def channel.  But if I watch the hi-def channel through my DVD burner (and I lose the hi-def), then I get subtitles.  Weird, huh?

I have been out hiking all day.

Ok, mostly driving to go hiking. But I have been out all day.

Today, I walked to work (first time in a long time).  I had to leave about an hour and a half earlier than I really wanted because my sister asked if I could help her put up some Ikea CD shelves.  I'm glad I left early because when I left, I walked to a local sub-sandwich shop that's half way between my home and work (very good and fresh), then I walked the rest of the way home.  As I was driving to my sister's house, it was about the time that I would've been leaving if she hadn't called and it started raining!  I hadn't brought my umbrella to work and if I'd left when I originally wanted, I've gotten soaked.  I guess that that makes up for forgetting about "Stage Door." ;)
