Post by: bk on January 05, 2008, 12:07:32 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were rainy and wet, and now it is time for you to post until the wet cows come home, with a capital C and that rhymes with P and that stands for pool.  Finally!

Got to make up for those lost hours.  I'll put on some lip gloss and rouge.

Lost hours? What about Lost Years?

The notes say:  What are your favorite comic motion pictures of the last twenty years – from 1998 to now?

Did we lose the ten years after 2008 while the site was down?

BK:  Be careful if you decide to go for a ride in the rain.  Those rains are from the same storm that wreaked havoc up here...and there may be some downed palm trees and power lines to contend with.

"The Rains Came" is a rather wonderful old movie.

"The Rains of Ranchipur", the CinemaScope remake, is a rather campy old wonder with a stellar cast (Richard Burton, Lana Turner and Michael Rennie) and a SUPERB score by Hugo Friedhofer.  The photography is glorious.

Fox really knew what to exploit with the CinemaScope  process....many earlier Scope films were filled with glorious scenery.  "Boy on a Dolphin" is a major delight in that regard.

HOSPITAL LAUNCHES INVESTIGATION AFTER MAN DISCHARGED IN STORM FOUND DEAD IN SNOWBANK

BANGOR, Maine —  A Machias hospital has launched an internal investigation into the death of a 61-year-old Eastport man whose body was found partially buried under fresh snow the day after he was discharged at his own request.

Reid Emery left Down East Community Hospital on Tuesday evening against the wishes of doctors and nurses, officials said. His body was found Wednesday afternoon a few hundred feet from the hospital.
Emery had walked out into a snowstorm without a jacket and with only slippers on his feet, according to police.

Popp said she could not discuss details of Emery's care and would not comment on reports that he was delusional when he left the hospital and had been given medication. Patients are generally allowed to sign themselves out of the hospital if they are deemed competent, she said.

I wonder what mental giant deemed the guy without a jacket in his slippers about to go out in a snow storm "competant'?

Time for some shut-eye.

Ye old storm number 3 is due to start rollin' in at any time (we've had two, count 'em 2, storm systemss in the past 24 hours).  Number 3 is supposed to be with us through Monday.

The I-80 is closed at higher elevations...in both directions.  Nobody is going anywhere until the blizzard subsides.

Groundhog Day.... Still a fun film after all these years

According to THIS (http://depthome.brooklyn.cuny.edu/isam/F03Newshtml/sondheim/sondheim.htm) article from 2003:

Whether or not Bounce can be termed a “flop,” the consolation for its demise is at least built into the show:  you forget the past and go on to the next thing.  What’s the next thing for Sondheim?  No one knows for sure, but at a pre-show talk at Chicago’s Ravinia  Festival in late August, he mentioned his interest in doing a “theme and variations” piece, possibly a musical version of the 1993 film Groundhog Day.6  In any case, we can be sure that, unlike the film’s characters, Sondheim will not repeat himself.
6. Hedy Weiss, “Sondheim Plans Changes to ‘Bounce’,” Chicago  Sun-Times (25 August 2003): 38.

BK, can you call Steve and find out??

I managed to watch "Project Runway" today.  I was AMAZED.

I agreed with who was sent packing (i.e., "aufed").  I was also quite taken with the tastefulness of Chris' garment.

It was quite unusual for him....so much so that Michael Kors was forced to comment specifically upon it, and it's only the third or fourth challenge, I think.

I have to tell you that when I saw the back of one of those garments (I forget whose it was), I had a flashback to Kayne's "final" dress in last season's show....beautiful in front and an abomination in back.

Rick is my Aunt Doris' and Uncle Rock's middle child.  Butch (I have no picture 'cause he didn't come that night), Rick and Debra, in that order, are their kids!

Here's a picture of the cousins-once-removed and one second cousin (Addison who is three).  From left, Lauren, Addison (daughter of first cousin once-removed Garrick,  who also  wasn't there), Becky (Debra's daughter), Ashley (Butch's daughter by his first wife, Pam), and Lindsey, Lauren's twin sister, both daughters of my cousin Rick and his (first) wife Rosemary (decidedly not there):

Saturday morning greetings!  Why am I up, showered, and dressed so early on my day off?  Because I have to be at an online state board meeting at 9am - glad we're not meeting in person or I'd have been on the road for an hour by now!

I'll be back later, but here's something to keep y'all busy in the meantime:

Maybe it's because I'm a little kvetchy this weekend, but I'm reminded that WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING gave me a slight case of the creeps.  Without giving away spoilers, I found the actions of the Sandra Bullock character to be sick and sad and almost indecently self-centered in light of what was going on in the plot, and that kept me from enjoying what what really a well-made film.
Title: Re:THE RAINS CAME

And yet I'm reminded that I really liked JUST LIKE HEAVEN, with Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo, which is similarly based in a sort of obsession with someone the hero hardly knows, maybe because of the tone of the film.

I've liked all of the film comedy suggestions so far. I especially love the Christopher Guest mockumentaries BEST IN SHOW (his best) and WAITING FOR GUFFMAN. Am also a big fan of WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING and FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL.

I liked RUNAWAY BRIDE a lot (and Julia Roberts' other hit film comedy that year NOTTING HILL).

I thought SIDEWAYS was wonderful.

And let's not forget those wonderful Pixar animated films like FINDING NEMO, TOY STORY 2, CARS, and RATATOUILLE.

Today I'll likely continue with BONES episodes while I cook and eat lunch.

Tonight, I'd like to watch CON-AIR on Blu-ray and since it's less than two hours and there don't appear to be a huge number of extras, I'll probably watch either CHILDREN OF MEN (sDVD) or OCEAMS THIRTEEN (Blu-ray).

As for AOL's Top 11(?) List... Well... After reading the wrap-up in the NY Times of the dining scene in NYC this past year, I'd probably have to agree.  Yes, there were some great new "rooms" that opened in 2007, but I think everyone is still living in the proverbial shadow of Thomas Keller's Per Se (http://www.frenchlaundry.com/perse/perse.htm) - which opened back in 2004.  And most of the notable new restaurants that opened in 2007 were more homey, rustic affairs.  *And some of the hopefuls of this past year, ended up not living up to all their hype and pedigree (a.k.a. Gordon Ramsay at The London).  However, 2008 holds lot of promise.

Oy! Such a morning it's been.  I'm having the most frustrating time ofver these "Lady of the Slipper" notes; I hate everything I've written andit's driving me mad.  The major issue is that the NYPL has a plethora of info on the original "Babes In Toyland" production because it's publcist/bsiness manager kept 4 voluminous scrapbooks of the show's run from March 1903 press releases throughthe show's first-class tour returning to Chicago in Sept 1904. There's also a huge file of programs, posters and other ephemera.  "The Lady Of the Slipper," a huge all-star succes in Oct 1912, has next to nothing beyond a few comments in the bios of Elsie Janis and Fred Stone: no NYPL scrapbooks for producer Charles Dillingham, no show scrapbook, and only occasional clippings in the scrapbooks of Doglas Stevenson (the Prince) and Helen Falconer (Ms Janis' understudy who finished up the 1914 tour).  Piecing together a history of this show from only a few comments is an ordeal.  I want my epitaph to be"Toyland spoiled him."

So, I've been up this morning trying to piece together a series of paragraphs I like, and I don't like any of them.

More to follow.

And speaking of Food Writing...

I highly recommend the latest issue of Gourmet Magazine.  The focus of this issue: Southern Food!

They've published a wonderful essay "What Is Southern?" by one of the Grand Dames of Southern Cuisine, Edna May Lewis.  The essay was just recently discovered, and the editors at Gourmet have more or less built the entire issue around it, which includes a good sampling of Edna May Lewis' recipes.

There's also an extensive(!!!) Southern Brunch menu by Atlanta chef, Scott Peacock, as well as more basic Southern Fried Chicken Dinner menu by one of their editors.

However, the articles in this issue ended up keeping me up last night for a few hours.  I read almost the whole issue before heading to bed.  DR edisaurus - Besides the feature on Scott Peacock, there's also an assessment of the Southern dining scene in Atlanta by John T. Edge.  I'd be interested in your "comparisons".

OH!  And the recipe for a Mile High Chocolate Layer Cake that calls for six sticks of butter for the frosting!   :)

*It was also sort of "shocking" to see some very simple recipes in this issue, with some very basic ingredient lists.  Even Scott Peacock's "fancy" brunch is more or less doable after a good trip to the grocery store, and some advance planning.

Serves 8

Champagne Punch
Pimento Cheese Toasts
Ambrosia
Braised-Pork Hash
Creamy Stone-Ground Grits
Lowcountry Breakfast Shrimp
Eggs with Cream, Spinach, and Country Ham
Slow-Roasted Tomatoes
Crisp Winter Lettuces with Warm Sweet-and-Sharp Dressing
Crusty Buttermilk Biscuits
Spoon-Bread Muffins
Warm Sweet-Potato Pudding with Apples and Chestnuts
Bourbon Pecan Tarts
Boiled Coffee

*Now that's a brunch!

Yesterday at 1:40 PM I received an urgent Email from the West Coast asking me to do some data base work. The Email contained a link to a City computer from which I could down-load the required voter data files.

Now, this was 9 files adding up to a bit more than 200 MegaBytes of data - and me on Dial-up! And, oh how lucky, the password would expire at 7:30 Pm! Inasmuch as the download took over three hours, It's a good thing I read the EMail promptly!

While HHW was busy having too many connections, I was able to clobber together one of the three desired databases and sent it back to CA as a Zipped file. I included an invoice for the bargain price of $250. The other two data bases will garner me an additional $600 and I can expect about $200 or more in added consulting fees :D

(Fortunately all those years I spent doing campaign consulting got campaign managers used to using my proprietary software - no one seems to like the stuff my competitors sell; when I was hospitalized during one campaign, a candidate called in a software consulting company to do some work on my system and after a few days of wheel spinning they left with the words "This stuff is too complex for us to figure out!")

So now one CA campaign manager has a handy-dandy data-base for a School Board race that will allow for targeted mailings, precinct walking, phone polling, and robo-calls to annoy the hell out of everybody.

der Brucer

And now you know a little more about how this most annoying business of political campaigning comes about.

The Gift of Southern Cooking: Recipes and Revelations from Two Great American Cooks

Not only is the book filled with some wonderful recipes, but the recollections and advice from Miss Lewis and Mr. Peacock are invaluable.

REAL CLEAR POLITICS (http://www.time-blog.com/real_clear_politics/)

Quote
Rasmussen: Obama +10, McCain +5 in N.H.

There are new Rasmussen numbers for New Hampshire taken after the Iowa Caucuses:

Democrats
Obama 37 (+9 vs. 12/18 poll)
Clinton 27 (-4)
Edwards 19 (+1)
Richardson 8 (nc)

In the latest RCP Average for New Hampshire, Clinton leads Obama by 1.2 points (32.5% to 31.6%).

Rasmussen also found that 40% of the voters will be independents and of those Obama holds a 16-point lead.

Republicans
McCain 31 (+4 vs. 12/18)
Romney 26 (-5)
Paul 14 (+7)
Huckabee 11 (nc)
Giuliani 8 (-5)
Thompson 5 (+2)

In the latest RCP Average, McCain holds a 3.2-point lead over Romney (31% to 27.8%). Also, don't look now, but Ron Paul has jumped 7 points.

Btw, I quite like the idea of the movie club.

But I am curious what kind of movies will be chosen?

Will it be newer releases?

Will it be older movies?

Not everybody here has netflix.

I wonder if sometimes it could be a movie that is on tv that week.

Btw, the 2nd part of the notes still do not work. :(

Oh and DR Jose (no results spoilers just discussion of the show), I actually really liked the first episode of CELEBRITY APPRENTICE.

Granted i did not know some of them.  But i thought it was very entertaining. And Omarosa is crazy like usual!

Gene Simmons sometimes doesn't seem like the sharpest businessman. But wow, his idea was good!

Well, I couldn't tell if the TOD was movies made from comics or comedy films since 1988(?), so it seems to be comedies:
  I Think I Do
  While You Were Sleeping
  Clueless
  George of the Jungle
  Hot Fuzz
  Shaun of the Dead
  My Big Fat Greek Wedding
  Pride and Prejudice

I had a weird dream last night about the Merchant-Ivory film SAVAGES as well, so no wonder I'm a bit dazed today.

....KHOYA KHOYA CHAND (2007) starring Shiney Ahuja (mentioned by DR TCB just recently), Soha Ali Khan, and Rajat Kapoor.

It takes place in the film industry of the 50s and deals with a film director who falls in love with an actress who is married to a not very nice actor.

the film has gotten wonderful reviews and I have been very eager to finally see it. The dvd was just released this week.

DR JRand, i just now read your comments about seeing a doctor.

It is better than yesterday. And it's not what i'd consider my back. It's way down under the small.

If i didn't know why it hurt, or if it was getting worse then i'd go.

But i think i just need to lie down and let it heal.

Thanks again for all the vibes.

I've never had a prob like this before. Although apparently this runs in my family since my mom said she has had the exact same thing quite a few times!

I managed to watch a couple of BONES episodes today before making and taking a plethora of phone calls.

The second BONES episode was my favorite of season 2, the one where Temperance and Hodgins get buried alive by a serial killer. Makes me cry every time I watch this episode - so beautifully loving and genuinely emotional. Of course, it's their brains and ingenuity that save them.

And speaking of Food Writing...

I highly recommend the latest issue of Gourmet Magazine.  The focus of this issue: Southern Food!

Got it.  Agree.

Quote
They've published a wonderful essay "What Is Southern?" by one of the Grand Dames of Southern Cuisine, Edna May Lewis.  The essay was just recently discovered, and the editors at Gourmet have more or less built the entire issue around it, which includes a good sampling of Edna May Lewis' recipes.

Yep

And on and on.

And for a bit more information on Edna May Lewis and Scott Peacock - and Southern Cooking(!), I highly recommend:

(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31sr91uBzcL._AA180_.jpg) (http://www.amazon.com/Gift-Southern-Cooking-Revelations-American/dp/0375400354/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1199551609&sr=8-1)

The Gift of Southern Cooking: Recipes and Revelations from Two Great American Cooks

Not only is the book filled with some wonderful recipes, but the recollections and advice from Miss Lewis and Mr. Peacock are invaluable.

*And the whole story about how the book came about, and how Lewis and Peacock became not only mentor and protege, but dear, dear friends, is quite wonderful in itself.

And over at Jessica's Biscuit, you can get her earlier book, The Taste of Country Cooking (http://www.ecookbooks.com/p-501-the-taste-of-country-cooking.aspx), for an absolute steal of a price at just $9.98, a full 60% off (which trumps Amazon easily).

I'm curious who people like between who is left.

Personally i don't like gramps (find him slightly useless). Grandson is okay, but since they are a team...

I also dislike chinese yeller dad. But i love the daughter.

My favs are TK and rachel.

I really disliked Kynt and was happy to see them go (i thought she was nice though).

And i'm sure most here will disagree, but i kind of like jen and nate, especially her. I find them to be the most competitive team. And although they suck when they are not on top. They IMO are the strongest remaining team.

A Sweeney update:

I checked with T.J., the bagger to whom I loaned our copies of a) the Sweeney Todd Lansbury/Hearn DVD, and b) the Sweeney Todd libretto.  He hadn't had a chance to see the Burton film yet, but tonight he and a group of his friends will be seeing it together, and then gathering at his home to watch the DVD, getting the two versions back to back.

How many make a group of friends?

Fifteen, he said.

Fifteen youngsters getting exposed to Sondheim!

It's what he's told us about Australian audience reactions to "Dreamgirls" that has me stumped.  He once wrote that they pretty much laughed at the film and the performers in it.

What was funny?  It's slick, beautifully made and extraordinarily performed (with exception of Jamie Fox).  Jennifer Hudson is amazing.  It gets better each time I see it.

DR FJL, I thought it was clear that the character is looking for the "we of me" (a Carson McCullers reference) and being a part of his family was what she really wanted more than the object of her affection.  When I had serious surgery in 1999, a dear friend told the hospital she was my sister to get into recovery to check on me so I can understand her deception to get into the hospital by telling them she was his fiancee.

I ended up dining with currently errant and truant DR Jason.  He's back at the Q, but he'll be transferring a few doors down next week to start being the merch manager over at A Chorus Line.  He survived his tour - which included having to perform the last three stops/shows with a severe case of laryngitis.  And then once he was back in the City, it was right back into the merch biz - along with a trip home to Kentucky to see his family.  *He also got a laptop for Christmas, and once he transfers over to the Schoenfeld and only has to worry about "walk in" and "walk out", he hopes to be popping back in here to post.

BTW - I wanted to like "DreamGirls".  I'm not yet brave enough to try and watch 'Hairspray" (I thought the old movie was cute).

The audience laughter at the preview screening was at yet another over emotive song and then another one and then another one. I don't care for that type of vocalising.  I guess a bit like FW's musicals - all big ballad heavy.
It was way too late to introduce a character song rather than a performance song for the musical to "work" for me.  The spotlighting the theatre in those end scenes was total clichéed corn.
I thought Jennifer's performance was great. Beyoncée was way out of her depth!
The movie had some appeal to a younger audience here (the ones who watch Idol).

Then after a stop at Amy's Bread - Omigod! The Monkey Cake was sooooo fresh - the icing was actually still on the warm side, and the cake layers still had a hint of "crust" to them - I headed on up to meet Michael - yes, that Michael - to catch a movie.  It was between "Juno" and "Atonement", and we were just going to walk up to Lincoln Square and buy tickets to whatever was screening first.  Well...

We stood in line at one of the self-service kiosks, and  ended up behind this young woman who was on her phone trying to convince her friend to come see "I Am Legend" (in the IMAX screen).  Of course, she starts panicking when the manager comes over the PA system and starts announcing that various showings are Sold Out of very close to selling out.  She's already punched in her quantity, "2", but she's still jabbering away with her friend on the phone.  "Oh... Are you sure you don't want to see it? Come on, it should be fun.  I mean, I really should buy the ticket now since it may sell out in the next few minutes... Well, maybe I'll just buy the tickets now even if I don't end up going to see the movie..."

-Excuse me? Are you going to talk or buy your tickets?

(Pause of acknowledgement)...  "Well... I mean the movie should be really cool on the IMAX screen... I know it's raining, but it's not too bad right now, come on over, I'm nearby...."

She finally buys her tickets.

Of course, in the interim, we had realized that all the showings for ALL the movies were sold out at that hour.  Nothing was available until 10:00.  Ah, welll...

It's great we all have such different tastes in entertainment.

I think it was DR who mentioned "Boy On a Dolphin" today. I loved the movie when I saw it back whenever. I've not been able to find the title song in my years of collecting so decided to check for it again. (Julie London). The prices of the 45 rpm single and the soundtrack vinyl are beyond belief.  (I eventually found a CD that has the track)
Thanks Ron.  At last my "wanted list" is complete! (A Johnny Depp reference perhaps)

Since we were on the UWS, we wandered here and there.  We walked by Levain - they had closed an hour earlier anyway.  We walked by Crumbs... Not really in the mood for cupcakes.  We did want to sit down for a bit and catch up, but we didn't feel like squatting in a Starbucks.  So... We ended up in Grom.  It was Michael's first time at the gelateria, and my umpteenth time there.  Oh, they added Green Tea gelato to the seasonal menu... and Cinnamon... Hmm..  Well, I decided to have a cup of their Cioccolata Calda di Latte - hot chocolate - (with whipped cream!) and Michael had a small cup of their Nougat gelato, then we settled into the seating area in the back of the store for a bit of chit-chatting and gossip-ing.

While we were there, a family came in.  A mother, a father, and five girls - all in their pre-teens and teens!  They sat at the table next to us, and started talking about their flavor choices for the evening.  It was quite the lively discussion.  Then they moved on to the BEST chocolate and hot chocolate in the city.  Well... I just had to speak up when they I realized they were leaving out the new Jacques Torres location just a few blocks away.  -They even thanked me for my recommendations when we were leaving.  ;)

I had an evening of viewing that really ran the gamut.

I began with CON-AIR on Blu-ray. It is not one of my favorite action films of the 1990s, and I'm afraid this viewing didn't inch it up the scale at all. Nicholas Cage's drawly Southern accent was really "actory," and the film has about two too many climaxes.

The Blu-ray transfer was exceptionally sharp and clean but too bright and did not have enough contrast. Could have been a drop dead gorgeous transfer, but the brightness level did the image no favors and kept it from popping like it could have.

Saturday night and the DEBATE is on.  I watch it now and then, but mostly I watch COPS.

LOL. I love COPS. Now that's reality tv. The only time of the week I plan to turn on the tv.

Next, I watched CHILDREN OF MEN, one of the DVDs I got for a Christmas present. Loved the movie, one of the best of 2006 and greatly underrated. Had me by the throat from the get-go and was very involving. It contained a PSYCHO-like surprise at one point, too, which I really was shocked with.

I watched some of the special features on the disc as well. Fascinating how they filmed the car/escape sequence in a long, long take. Also very interesting how the bombing of the coffee shop was done with timing so perfect.

I finished the evening with THE SOUND OF MUSIC. I didn't have time to watch the whole movie, but I selected several numbers to watch - "Do Re Mi," "The Sound of Music reprise," "The Lonely Goatherd." This was another film I hadn't had a chance to watch on the new set until tonight. I was choosing between this and HELLO, DOLLY, and SOM won out tonight.

Tomorrow, I may try some DOLLY numbers to see how they look since my TV shows tomorrow night don't start until 9 p.m.

Sounds like a classic case of an Alien Probing.

Note: Woody's "Wish List" at Jessica's Biscuit totals out at a tad over $11,800! (And that's at the sale prices....)

I'm sleepy tonight.  Watched a movie I TIVOd today - Crack-Up, with Pat O'Brien.  I also excitedly checked out Skidoo - I was very excited to finally see it in its proper scope ratio.  Well, imagine my surprise to see the shockingly horrid pan-and-scan travesty that greeted my eyeballs.  I couldn't believe it - TCM should be ashamed of themselves and should not make licensing deals where original ratio transfers will be provided.  And to ADVERTISE it as being letterboxed, and then to not apologize for it being the horror that it was.  I cannot watch the film like that - and I think it would at least play better if we could see it as Mr. Preminger filmed it.

Ron P - Maybe I need to look at "While You were Sleeping" again.  I recall cringing a bit at the leading character's behavior - but apparently many others disagree.

It's very difficult to identify with either of the leads who are acting so disingenously:

While You Were Sleeping -  I invaded your family inner-circle on false pretenses.

While You Were Sleeping - I stole what I believed to be your girl.

Or you can just relax and try to enjoy the absurdities.

I just keep thinking - these are our BEST choices?

I suspect that come November, much of America may be weighing the "lesser of two evils" choice. I, for one, may well be voting "against" a candidate rather than for one. In spite of life-long party loyalty, I would probably pick Clinton or Obama over either Romney or Huckabee. If Mc Cain runs I will probably go there, unless he picks a theocrat for a running mate. I think the outcome in Nov will be highly conditioned by current events between now and then. Will the country be looking for a leader that "lifts their spirit" (Obama) or one that will protect their lifes (Mc Cain).

der Brucer

I remeber the first electoral choice I was given after I left the service, a Congressional Race:

A. The Republican - Uber right PR director of the John Birch Society.

B. The Democrat - Uber left widow of a slain Negro civil rights worker (we didn't say "black" then)

I think I voted Libertarian.
