Title: COUNTDOWN TO 2006

Well, you've read the notes, you've read of cabbages and kings and King Kong and Godzilla, and now it is time for you to post until the cowbbages and kings come home.

Good Morning!

Yes, I've been sitting here like so much fish for the past hour or so.  I started looking up various and sundried things on the internet, some actual research, some things just for fun and curiosity's sake.  And then I decided to blow up my new Balance Ball...  It really is amazing just how big those things can get.  *Calling DR TCB, Calling DR TCB!  ;)

In any case...  I got a "medium" one which is supposed to inflate to a "height" (diameter) of 65cm - or about 25-1/2 inches.  Well... I thought I had inflated it to properly, then measured it, and I was only at 20 inches or so.  Well... I pumped some more... 22 inches... Well... I got it to about 24 inches, and I'm going to let it "rest" overnight - which is what the directions recommend anyhow.  But it really is amazing just how strong and sturdy that material is.

Abs of Steel - Here I Come!

As for the Topic of the Day...

Hmmm... The only show that comes to mind is "Lost".  And some episodes of "ER".  I've been working a lot this past year <knock wood>, so my prime time TV viewing has been relatively minimal.

OH...  "So You Think You Can Dance? (Dance, Dance, Dance...)"

Might I just ask where in tarnation IS everyone?  Oh, it's the middle of the night.  I have been up since three-thirty fighting nausea.  Nausea and I have been wrasslin' for the last hour.  I must say nausea was winning for the first few rounds, but I came back and said, "I ain't down yet" and I've been winning the fight for the last half-hour.  Frankly, I'd like to call it a draw, but it doesn't like to be called a draw so what am I to do?  I'd like to go back to sleep but that has not been possible thus far, oh, no, that has not been possible thus far.

Do you know that there is nothing going on on all the Internet at this time of morning?  It is deader than a doornail on all the Internet at this time of morning.  There was a time, of coruse, when we had early-morning denizens here at haineshisway.com (and there was a time when we had late-night denizens here at haineshisway.com), but now we've only got errant and truant hainsies/kimlets or WUSSBURGERS.  And so, I do a monologue.

Since I watch very little television all I can say is that I continue to enjoy the continuing development of Mariska Hagarty and Christopher Meloni's characters. The latter's inner demons make his character's story arc and the episode's story fascinating to watch. Hagarty character is also interesting to watch as she seems to me to be a person with feelings first and a police officer second and sometimes they conflict in the line of duty.

I enjoy all the Law and Order and can watch a whole evening of the various series without getting bored

It really is amazing just how big those things can get.

I figure you'd seen everything by now.

Good morning, all!  I had strange and frightening nightmares last night.  Yes, I slept quite badly.  I can't figure which was more terrifying:  the vampire/ghost one or the one wherein I was working again at The Drama Book Shop!  There was a third alarming one in there as well, and now I forget it.  I was unsettled all night.

So, today I have the post office. a trip to the recording office, and a brief visit to my accountant with the good I couldn't deliver because of the transit strike. Then I have some reports to finish about the BABES IN TOYLAND Appendix to Volume One, and two orchestrations sitting here:  one for Judy Kaye and one for Ron Raines.

TOD:
  My Name is Earl
  The Office
  The Medium
  Ghost Whisperer

I don't have 10 tv shows from 2005.

Good morning, Elmore!

I haven't been watching that much TV, either.  Der Brucer watches almost every police procedural there is, and their sequels, but I leave the room.  I just don't think they're at all fun.  I call them his "happy shows."

I do like Good Eats, of course.  And Iron Chef America.  That's predictable, I guess.

Almost time for me to get ready for work.  Toodles.

Re: TOD.   Again, I can barely remember what I watch on TV anymore.  I have not watched Network television in years.

Since a week before moving I have not seen any TV at all.  I've not called the cable company here yet, because we're planning on going out and getting wide-screen HD TVs sometime this week.

I must say I've not missed television at all in the last three weeks.  I've been able to watch some DVDs and videos but very few.  It's been wonderful not to couch-potato it and have mindless sludge wash over me and, say, read a book instead.  I hope I can not fall into bad habits again once we're connected and resist the temptation to sit glazed-eyed in front of time-killing mediocrity.

Shows I've liked this year:

ROME
DEADWOOD
JON STEWART
CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM
LOU DOBBS
COUNTDOWN with Keith Olberman

Good morning!

Our line of beautiful days continues with another glorious morning. It's again going to get into the 50s today, and I read in the newspaper this morning that by the end of the week, the temperatures will be hitting the 60s!

The weather of the Southland is a mass of contradictions.

As for performances I've admired, there are so many, it would take pages to list them all. We are blessed with many outstanding actors who are doing bang-up work in television drama at a time when there are more interesting stories being told there than ever before. Among the ones whom I look forward to each week:

Keifer Sutherland - '24'

Christopher Meloni - LAW & ORDER: SVU

Patricia Arquette and Jake Weber - MEDIUM

Marcia Cross and Felicity Huffman - DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES

Kristin Bell and Enrico Colantoni - VERONICA MARS

Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lilly, Josh Holloway, Terry O'Quinn - LOST

Ian McShane and Timothy Olyphant - DEADWOOD

Kevin McKidd - ROME

Michael Chicklis and Glenn Close - THE SHIELD

Hugh Laurie - HOUSE

Tony Shalhoub and Ted Levine - MONK

Fire trucks and emergency vehicles are trying to come down the street beside my house, but with all the construction still going on with the condo units directly opposite my kitchen window, they can't get by. Blowing horns did no good, so the trucks had to back up and go around the block to enter at the bottom of the street.

However, this construction's end is in sight, heaven be praised!

Good morning, all.  Happy December 27th.

I depart these here premises VERY early in two days.  I have a 6 a.m. flight to Cincinnati and will have only minutes -- I repeat, MINUTES -- between arrival there and departure from there to San Francisco.

To get to Columbia SC on Thursday morning, we shall have to arise by 3:30 a.m. and be gone by 4 a.m.  That will have us there by 5 a.m., which, given that facility's slugbuttish security procedures, will allow me to arrive at my gate just in time to get on the plane.

It has been a fun-filled two weeks -- with some very weird and nervewrackingly odd moments as silent daggers flew about.

All survived, however.

Good morning all

Vixmom - Yes, I got the house - well pending inspection, but I'm not anticipating any problems there.

It is quite foggy here today, so my niece won't be leaving for several hours in hopes that the fog lifts. It's a 2 1/2 hour drive once she hits the road, so that works perfectly. She'll call when she's on her way out of town and I don't need to sit here waiting for her. It does give me time to clean house which is also a good thing

She wants to see The Family Stone, so I think that's the plan for this evening.  Dinner and a movie. Tomorrow we shall ice skate like we are trying to win Olympic Gold.....well since neither of us skate I don't think it will be quite like that, but it will help us appreciate the figure skaters when the Olympics begin!

Biggest TV disappointments of the year:

"Joey"
"Will and Grace"

Reality:

"American Idol"  -- Carrie Underwood, to me, will never be anything more than an insipid c/w clone of Mariah Carey, who also does nothing for me.

TV Shows...
I really don't watch any other than TAR or BB and I don't think I'd put those on any 10 best list

I do watch Countdown with Keith Oberman regularly and try to catch Real Time with Bill Maher.  I do enjoy Curb Your Enthusiasm. That's about it unless you count  Local on the 8's on The Weather Channel - I do catch that quite often.

Have a terrific Tuesday, all.

I plan on being most rested and well-napped.

I watched "The Odessa File" on TCM this morning.  I am most thankful Andrew Lloyd Webber did not attempt a career at film music composition. There is a nice-ish song, called "Christmas Dreams", sung over the title by Perry Como.  The remainder of Lloyd Webber's "score" is inconsequential muttering.

Medium (which Rodzinski now watches with me)
Project Runway (which we are both addicted to)
The Closer
Grey's Anatomy
Desperate Housewives
Intervention
Alias (yes, it sucks hard this season, but it goes up here for old times sake)

Okay so there are only 7, but those are the only shows that I can say that I make strong effort to watch every week.  I will watch Alias to the bitter end...

I know a lot of you got gift cards for Christmas.  I saw something on the news that might interest you.  They said that some of them lose value if you hold on to them.

Hmmm...I can't think of many TV shows in 2005 that I would place in a Top Ten other than LOST and THE AMAZIN' RACE.  I tried getting into INVASION and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, but I lost interest in both as the fall season progressed.  I still prefer watching good old films on TCM over most of the fare offered by the networks.

Glad to see DR RLP mention PROJECT RUNWAY on Bravo....I enjoyed the show as well.  And the new season is running now....Wednesday nights at 10 pm EST.  No favorite designer for me yet, although I have some people I like....  Time will tell.

This year on television (in no particular order):

Nip/Tuck
Project Runway
Ballroom Bootcamp
Two and Half Men
Talk Soup
Law & Order
NCIS

And I will think about three others...hmmm.  Can't add The Amazing Race since they RUINED it this cycle - but maybe it will improve when it returns!

Rodzinski and I have been having a most enjoyable holiday season.  We are comfortably ensconced in his mother's home in St. John, IN.  3 out of his 4 sisters are here and the fourth is getting into town with her family tomorrow, so it is a family reunion of sorts.

We have made it our goal to see a movie every day (a goal which I am doubly committed too after learning that it only costs $6 for showtimes before 6PM!!)  Yesterday was The Family Stone which exceeded my expectations; I thought it was well written, casted and acted.  Today I believe we are going to see Syriana.

TV shows.  Well, I'll confess that until I got the TIVO, my viewing was limited to what was on before nine O'clock.

Now that I've discovered the "later" night shows, I'm off and running!

I do plan on recording the TAR when it starts again.  I want to be in on it from the get go.

I love LOST, THE GHOST WHISPERER, BOSTON LEGAL,  The one with the female president (can't think of the name), SURFACE to name a few.

If this was 1957, here's a show that would show up on my Top Ten List:  DATE WITH THE ANGELS starring Betty White and Bill Williams.  It was shown late night on Christmas Eve on my local PBS channel and my Tivo recorded it for me.  The show was flat out funny and had a great supporting cast with Burt Mustin, Richard Deacon and Nancy Kulp.  I never heard of this one before and I have no idea if the other episodes were as funny, but I'm glad I caught this.

Well, Narnia was sold out yesterday, believe it or don't.  So we headed down the street to Border's, used our couponage and saved about $50, which is nice, until you realize we spent $100, LOL.  Then we headed home and watched The Polar Express which was visually sumptious but otherwise a vacuum.

I think about the only TV we still make an appointment to view is Lost.  Like I said here months ago, I believe the Desperate Housewives phenomenon is over, despite the ratings.  Did anyone see the wire service report this morning about Longoria verbally assaulting a Hispanic cop?  (Speaking of which, there was that report a week or so ago about "Ana Lucia"'s DUI in Hawaii where she evidently told the police to "just go ahead and shoot me."  What is it with these supposedly rich and happy people, anyway?)

Oh, and BK, you left one very important credit off your 2005 credits.  Shame!   ;)

Thanks for the recommendation, DR T'Punk. I will be watching and will share opinions on it during my late night venture onto HHW.

Glad to see DR Ron's recommendation of OUT OF PRACTICE which I greatly enjoy, but it hasn't quite reached the ranks of my Top 10 (yet). And with CBS taking it off to give Jenna Elfman's new show a spin, I'm NOT a happy camper. It's not slated to come back until March at the earliest. I suspect if Elfman's show bombs, they might pull it and bring back OUT OF PRACTICE early, but unless the show is really terrible, they may let it run on Monday to see how it samples.

What I hate is that OUT OF PRACTICE has been building its audience since its first week, and the last couple of first-run segments was retaining quite an impressive amount of its TWO AND A HALF MEN ratings lead-in. To have that momentum stifled is very frustrating for me (and I'm sure to everyone involved with the show).

I love LOST, THE GHOST WHISPERER, BOSTON LEGAL,  The one with the female president (can't think of the name), SURFACE to name a few.

As for worst shows, well, I can't stand NUMB3RS any more. I fell out with LAS VEGAS (just too fluffy and silly for my taste), and JOEY has bottomed out, too. (I still will watch WILL & GRACE and will until it ends its run this year. About every fourth or fifth episode this year has been worth watching.) And I left THRESHOLD behind before CBS did and NIGHT STALKER before ABC did. ALIAS is but a shadow of its former glory, but I'll watch it to the end of its run, too.

I'm still sampling SUPERNATURAL, BONES, and INVASION and think they have much to recommend them while there is still room for improvement.

DVD-R is compatible with more DVD players than DVD+R, but they're both usually viewable on most recent players.

The different designations have to do with the method by which the digital data is stored on the disc.

Strange but true department:  I got Betsy and me the Season 1 Leave it to Beaver set to bring back happy memories of our childhood (or at least first-run syndication, LOL).  So we popped in the unaired pilot, with a different Ward and Wally (the title of my next novel, BTW), and there's this proto-Eddie Haskell character who looks very familiar.  And lo and behold the credits come up and guess who it was, in all of his 12 year old (or so) glory?:  Harry Shearer!!!!

DEADWOOD

LOU DOBBS
COUNTDOWN with Keith Olberman

I can't believe I didn't mention DEADWOOD!  I love that series, and I missed enough of ROME to know I have to buy the first year when it is released to DVD.

DR DtM - Date with the Angels was MY first exposure to Miss Betty White and I watched the show during its original brief run.  I thought she was the cleverest and funniest thing on TV!  And I loved the theme song, which I guess was NOT original to the show, but was sung so well...

Got a date with an angel
Gonna meet her at seven.
Got a date with an angel
And I'm on my way to heaven!!

LOL...Betty was a cutie.   I wish this show was available on video or DVD...her earlier sketch-type show has some episodes on DVD, but it's not nearly as funny as Date With An Angel.

But then again, I am remembering it from almost 50 years ago!

There's one major flaw in a Don Black lyric in the film, "I've Never Been This Far Before":  the line "and I mean . . . slice before I wake."  Alice does not know she's dreaming about Wonderland.  I like the score for the film quite a lot.

Now, I do have one TOD question:  programs we watched in 2005 or programs that debuted in 2005?  My first list was only of show debuting in 2005.

DRJMK, I do think DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES has jumped the shark and will never recover.  I'm not certain when it happened, but I think they burned out of plots in all the frenzy last year and lost their way with the storylines.  It needs to be overhauled by its writers to find its ultimate direction.  I stopped laughing and caring.  I now call JOEY "Dead Horse" since they keep flogging it to make it work, and I think WILL AND GRACE should have been put to sleep several years ago before it became shrill, sloppy, and dirty when it once was naughty and nice.

I've always been amazed at how much I don't miss TV when I don't have ready access to a set and a cable box.  There have been a couple of gigs over the years where the amenities have been, let's say, spare.  And usually, a TV (and cable) are considered "luxuries" - meaning, "if you want it, you have to pay for it yourself".  So...

Books.  Movies.  Restaurants.  Walks.  Shows.  Etc., etc., etc.  Or just spending time with my friends and "co-workers".

*But there are times when being a couch-potato can be a good thing.

Christmas this year was one of the best I can remember.  Bouncing back and forth between Jed's house and mine was great fun, and we got to spend lots of time with both families.  Present-wise, I scored big this year.  Among the favorites was an ipod, which I've been wanting for a while, a programable coffeemaker, from the wonderful DB Jed, and of course the new (used) car that my dad bought for me yesterday and I'll have sometime next week.  Yes, I'm spoiled... :D

It does sound like I'm missing a lot of quality TV material.  At some point in the past few years, I lost touch with series television.  I watch most of AMERICAN MORNING on CNN, and NY1's ONSTAGE series, and tend to have NY1 News in the background a lot of the time I'm at home.  But I guess they're not the kinds of shows we're talking about for Top Ten lists.

Skip seems to watch HOUSE, THE GHOST WHISPERER, MEDIUM and the first CSI series fairly regularly.

DRELMOORE - when I saw it the first time, I thought it was a comedy sketch.  It is indeed one of the WORST shows on tv.  The whole premise is dumb and the "problems" created by those women are completely manufactured.  I especially like the "drama" created when some woman "returns to the house."

The only thing I am not sure about is the fact that I have to make 4 steaks.  I'm assuming I have to do them one by one?

That recipe is a good basic one for preparing steaks inside - as opposed to outside on a grill.  For a properly cooked steak, it must first be seared on the outside - which requires high heat - and then cooked to desired doneness at a lower temp.  On a grill, you just put the steak over the hot coals/burner element, then just move it to a cooler place on the grill once it is seared and all the good stuff is sealed inside.

As for smoke...  Well, it is a grill pan.  Grilling usually means smoke.  I'd suggest opening a window if possible, or disconnecting the battery while cooking - and making sure to re-connect it after your done cooking.

*Which brings back very fond memories of my very first Chicago steakhouse steak.  It had a wonderful char on the outside - not burnt, but it had a nice 'crunch' to it.  And then it was a perfect medium rare inside.  YUM!

Btw, for anyone interested the Kennedy Center Honors are on tonight on CBS.

And there was a great article in The Washington Post about how the broadcast is put together.  And there's even a very brief mention of the retake they had to do this after the ceremony was done due to a problem with Beyonce's microphone during Tina Turner's segment.

*But a few weeks ago, the Post covered the whole mini-faux-scandal - Tina Turner was gracious enough to stay after the ceremony was done for the retake, and sit in her box and clap for the cameras - as did most of the people in her party.  Including Oprah Winfrey.  Well... Guess who's table a the post-ceremony dinner remained empty?... Ms. Turner took Beyonce and her entourage, including Ms. Winfrey, to a place in Georgetown as a personal Thank You.  ;)

In any case...

I tend to use my gift cards up pretty quickly too.  -And if I don't, I usually end up kicking my proverbial self for not using it after I had just made a purchase using my "own" cash/credit card.  Doh!

;)

If anything, I think of it as just putting my friend's gift to me to good use in a timely manner.

;D

As long as he is happy, that's okay.  My sister Molly is happy, too, she says.  So that's okay.

Have you said what brand of DVD recorder you got, DR Danise? Just curious. I know many of the new models record on both DVD-R and DVD+R. Mine will only record DVD-R of those two formats.

After I got in from a long lunch, I watched CSI: MIAMI which I recorded on the DVR last night. It was an episode from this season, and I remembered it fairly well. I didn't recall one aspect of the ending which is why I watched it all. Well, that, and the fact that the show is so overwhelmingly gorgeous in high definition.

After that was done, I watched the first hour of STOWAWAY, long enough to watch Shirley do her impressions and sing "You've Got To S-M-I-L-E." Alice Faye is in this one, too, and has already reprised "Goodnight, My Love" after SHirley got to sing it first.

All you DR who watch Medium, The Closer, and The Ghost Whisperer be sure to stop by the World of Wisdom when you are in Indiana - we have some nice merchandise for you.

You, too, can be a medium, a closer, or a ghost whisperer!

So, tonight, I'll finish up STOWAWAY (lots of print damage on this one; looks pretty bad and is probably not high on the list for DVD transfer). Afterwards, I'll probably watch another CSI: NY from the DVD boxed set, and then probably the HOUSE rerun (which was this season's premiere episode) followed by THE CLOSER.

I quite like the Tim Rice /ALW  "Christmas Dream".  One of the other "Odessa File" themes resurfaced in "Sunset Boulevard"

The British cast recording (with American Ann Crumb) of The Goodbye Girl was horrid.  Marvin Hamlisch rewrote the score and threw out almost all of David Zippel's (much better) lyrics for new lyrics by Don Black. :P They kept only one or two of DZ's songs.

Tuesday evening greetings!  This is a quick check-in, between a couple of sparkling (well, sort of) get-togethers.  This afternoon we met both of DH Richard's brothers and their families at the Montgomery Inn for lunch - great BBQ ribs - and we got to know our nephew's fiance.  She is a delightful young woman, who's a perfect match for him.  The only downside to the event was that Richard's mother didn't make it - she went to the hospital in an ambulance at 11pm last night.  Richard met them there and spent all night with her - she was admitted with some sort of intestinal obstruction.  She's resting and they're trying to decide how to treat the problem.

Now, I'm on my way to meet my girlfriends for the 7pm showing of Memoirs of a Geisha.  Back later with a report.

I just had to share this with Keith, a true Beaver fanatic.  Keith wants to know what took you so long to watch the shows and next begin on Northern Exposure and we can plan a trip together to the annual Moose Days in Washington.

The Topics du jour this week are really demonstrating how little I have been doing with my life recently.

I only saw one new movie in 2005 and that was HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE (although I liked yesterday's title of THE TEMPLE OF DOOM, too).

The only television show I watch on a regular basis, other than MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL, is GHOST WHISPERER.  I missed too much of the first half of LOST this year to figure out what is going on now, and I tried watching DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, but I am afraid I found it dumb.

I should say that MTV2"s HIGH SCHOOL STORIES is my favorite TV show, even though I have never watched it yet (I am waiting for the new season to start in January).

And unfortunately, if I tried to make a Top Ten list of plays and musicals; you would quickly figure out that I was in all of them.

Bernard Herrmann's scores for ISLAND, JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, and the JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS films have some remarkable similarities....even heard a bit of NORTH BY NORTHWEST and PSYCHO in this 1961 flick.

Enjoyed the last half hour of STOWAWAY especially Alice Faye's delectable "One Never Knows, Does One?" Beaver Fanatic Department (AKA get your mind out of the gutter, TCB, Department):  A good friend of mine moved back to Corvallis, a sleepy little college town (Oregon State University), whose school mascot is the Beaver.  Katie was an OSU grad.  She set up a very successful local business and several people asked her to run for City Council, which was at that point populated entirely by aging males, all of them incredibly University of Oregon alumni (the Ducks).  So Katie agreed to run and chose this classic as her campaign slogan:

[move=left,scroll,7,transparent,100%]LET'S PUT A BEAVER ON THE CITY COUNCIL!![/move]

She lost.  In a landslide.

OH!  I totally forgot that was in the works.  Here in the DC area, the Hecht's stores were also bought out by May/Macy's.  Of course, most of the malls that have a Hecht's already have a Macy's, so they'll be doing some creative shuffling and reorganizing.  I believe Tysons Corner (Tysons I) and Tysons Galleria (Tysons II) will now both have a Macy's.

*In Richmond, the Hecht's/Macy's is divided between two locations in one mall.  It's actually kind of cool.  One location specializes in men's clothing and furnishings and furniture, and the other concentrates on women's clothing and furnishings, housewares and linens.

I'm not sure if a trip to Chicago is still in the mix, but I am very curious to visit a gambling boat.  I want to play nickel slots, but I'll pass the numbers along to Rodzinski.

Actually, now that I think of it...

If you can find a dollar table, put $1.00 on 5/8, 8, 8/11, 11, 22 and 25, 26, 27 and $2.00 on 22/23/25/26.  *I forgot that the 22/26 was a four-corner deal.  -That will be an even $10.00.  If you win, I'll split with you.  If you don't win, I'll take you out for a burger when I get back to NYC.

:)

...And I also got some "news" from a couple of family members today...  Let's just say it's sort of nice to know that I'm actually the "normal" one now.

Well, I have understudy and brush-up rehearsal in about 12 hours, so...

Goodnight.

I just had to share this with Keith, a true Beaver fanatic.

I'm not touching this with a ten-foot Pole or even a five-foot Czech.

Rehearsal was, as expected, herky-jerky, with lots of paraphrasing, but we got through it.  My assistant noted every wrong word down to the tiniest Uhs and I means, and we've gone over everything.  Now we can start focusing on the energy and the timing and the moments.

Our new special effects person delivered our "gags" tonight - one of them will work exactly as I'd envisioned, and one is quite different and requires some restaging, but ultimately I think we're fine now.
