Title: OUR HUNGRY MAWS
Post by: bk on February 08, 2006, 12:11:20 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've realized that "maws" spelled backwards is "swam" and, having that important information you are now ready to post until the cows come home - they're currently filling their hungry maws with new-mown hay, whatever the HELL that is.

Good morning, all!  I'm stuck here all morning dealing with IRS for my accountant tomorrow.  I'm off to the NYPL at noon for another look at the BABES IN TOYLAND scrapbooks, and then back here for another talley.

At some point today, I'm getting a chart eo work on for Noah Racey, and I've got some music to photocopy for Karen Ziemba.  For now, it's death and taxes.

Anyone remember Victoria Mallory?  She's the first singer to record "I Remember," as I recall.

A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC was the third cast album I owned when I was a teen and I instantly fell in love with Victoria Mallory's voice.  I was delighted to hear more of her on the Sondheim Scrabble album.  I even folowed her for a time when she was on RYAN'S HOPE.  But aside from a few ST. Patrick's Day episodes of the soap and the inclusion of "One More Kiss" on the FOLLIES CD, I don't believe I ever heard her sing again.

I recorded it.  I had planned on watching it last night but I conked out on the sofa after SCRUBS and didn't get to it.  I will be watching it tonight.

I am also scouting eBay for the 80s BLEAK HOUSE with Diana Rigg.  I'd like to see that one after this current presentation has run.

DR RODZINSKI mentioned ROME ADVENTURE, and I would guess that A SUMMER PLACE had a release...maybe not.

I knew Tre remaining episodes of THE BOOK OF DANIEL were being broadcast at NBC.com, but since I don't have a broadband connection, they are off limited to me. I'll have to wait and hope that a DVD set will be forthcoming.

I wish HBO or Showtime had taken the show on from the beginning instead of NBC. Ah, well, such is life.

Beisdes GYPSY and THE MUSIC MAN, my favorite Warner Bros. soundtrack LP was INSIDE DAISY CLOVER. Jackie Ward's renditions of "You're Gonna Hear from Me" and "The Circus is a Wacky World" are grandly appealing, and the underscore is very unsettling and wonderful.

I wish this movie were one being readied for DVD release. For now, I have to be content with the laserdisc.

WB Record soundtracks:  In addition to the ones named, please add the wonderful "Dead Ringer" by Andre Previn...

Friedhofer is certainly my choice for most underrated -- overlooked -- and least-recorded (compared to his output) film composer of the 1950s.  Friedhofer was a native San Franciscan.  No less a personage than Alfred Newman, music director of 20th Century Fox and 9-time Oscar winner, urged anyone who wanted to learn about film scoring to "study Friedhofer."  His peers were in awe of him.  And when I hear his scores, I share that awe.

Another...not as forgotten but getting there...is Franz Waxman.

DR JRand55:  "A Summer Place" was never issued on LP at the time of its release.  In the 1970s, Elmer Bernstein recorded a good chunk of the score for his Film Music series.  Two years ago (?), the original tracks were released on a Film Music Archives CD produced by Brigham Young University which holds all archival materials of Max Steiner's career.  That score is still available and can be ordered through specialty outlets, including Screen Archives.com, its distributor.

At least Friedhofer and Waxman won competitive Oscars so someone at some point appreciated their work.

That's more than can be said for Alex North or David Raksin. Still can't get over that Raksin's LAURA score wasn't nominated for an Oscar, and that was back in the days when there were 20 nominations in the category!

Wow! A friend just sent me this picture from long, long ago. This was taken in 1982 during a production of SHENANDOAH where I played Jacob Anderson.

I have no memory of this publicity shot being taken, and this is the first time I have ever seen this picture. The shot must have been used in the lobby of the theater where we played, but I never saw it.

Der Brucer and I will be heading to the the toned DC of Washing today.  We'll be attending a reception/fundraiser for the campaign to end Don't Ask/Don't Tell.  Side effect - I'll get to meet some of the other members of USNAOut, a group der B joined last year.

Now, we just have to decide what to do between when we get into town and the time of the reception.  (Like just walking around that city can't be fun!)

bk - this isn't a question, but more a comment about "I Remember" - I think it's a good thing that you use the Diana Reeves recording just for the fact that she ISN'T theatre related.  You can talk about theatre music that "crossed-over" into the pop, jazz or whatever genre and how that used to be a big thing.  And you can always talk about theatre music that "crossed-over" that never really should have :)   Just my 2-cents.

Repetitive story telling syndrome department:  I saw Victoria Mallory in ALNM on Broadway when I was a mere child.  ;)  This was the same performance when a slightly (er...not) inebriated Glynis Johns almost got decked by the gliding birch trees.  :)

Dianne Reeves toured as one of Sergio Mendes' vocalists before she went solo.

A Summer Place was one of the films Warner Brothers offered to Percy Faith when they were trying to entice him away from Columbia to head their new record division.  Ironic, eh?

Other WB soundtracks I recall are Camelot, Gypsy and Finian's Rainbow.

Good Morning!

Hmm...  Just checked the run down of the Helen Hayes Awards nominations that were announced yesterday.  -The Helen Hayes are DC's equivalent of the Tony's.  Damn Yankees received noms for:

Outstanding Resident Musical
Outstanding Direction, Resident Musical - Molly Smith
Outstanding Musical Direction - George Fulginiti-Shakar
Outstanding Supporting Actor, Musical -  Lawrence Redmond (Joe Boyd)
Outstanding Supporting Actress, Musical - Kay Walbye (Meg Boyd)
Outstanding Leading Actor, Musical - Brad Oscar (Applegate)
Outstanding Leading Actress, Musical - Meg Gillentine (Lola)

Congrats to one and all!

However...

Personally, I do have to say that the omission of Baayork Lee's choreography and Martin Pakledinaz's costume design from their respective categories is quite glaring.  The Costume Design did have some heavy competition this year, so... But the Choreography category - again this year - did recognize the work of a small company in Arlington that does "wordless" plays/musicals/theatrical evenings.  I do appreciate the work that that company does, but I've always thought the "choreographer/director's" work was put into this category since the nominators aren't sure where to put it in the first place.  Heck, I'm not even sure.  Is it choreography since the actors are "moving"?  Or is it direction since all the actors are doing is "moving" - blocking?  -And usually without music.  So...

Hopefully, one of our nominees will snag one of the awards, and recognize Baayork's and Martin's work from the podium.  But...

Once again, Congratulations to All!

As for Victoria Mallory...

She was one of the stars of a "Christmas Spectacular" that was mounted in Richmond, VA, when I was in college.  -Actually, I was a member of the "community chorus" for the show, but had to drop out due to class conflicts.  -Which, as it turns out, was a good thing.  ;)  In any case...

I think it was called "The Twelve Dreams of Christmas", and it was being presented in the Carpenter Center, a classic movie/vaudeville house complete with a star ceiling.  The presenters were hoping to make it an annual affair, very much like the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.  Big orchestra.  Big chorus.  Lots of dancers.  Lots of costumes.  Lots of money.  Alas, it never made it past it's first (and only) presentation.  Where was I?  Oh, yes...

Victoria Mallory was the female star of the show.  -And if memory serves me correct, the producers had originally lined up a more recognizable star, but she withdrew.  However, they did snag Van Johnson for the male lead.

So when do you start your Lestat rehearsals?

The cast started rehearsals in NYC on Monday.  I'm not officially on payroll until orchestra rehearsals begin in a few weeks.  However, I'm gonna stop by rehearsals every now and then just to keep myself up-to-date and in-the-loop.  And also just to give me something to do with my free time.  And to keep me off the streets, DR elmore.  ;)

So, I have a few weeks to get resettled back into NYC, and get my apartment space in order.  And get all my stuff in order down here in DC and Richmond.  Alas, no work means no income, but I've been saving my pennies, and I do have some audition days coming up, and those should keep me solvent.  I just need to make sure to keep myself "active" in all respects between now and my first day of rehearsal.  It's just way to easy to "want" to do nothing for nothing's sake.

I've been wondering about this whole "Bambi II" thing too.  I'm on a few of Disney's e-mail lists/subscriptions, and they really are giving this one quite the PR push.  It's just interesting that their target audience for "Bambi II" was not even alive when "Bambi (I)" originally came out.  Some not even when "Bambi" first came out on VHS.  -Remember VHS?

I know I wasn't!  :D

"Bambi II" supposedly falls somewhere in the middle of the original film story...it takes place shortly after his mother's death, and he doesn't become an adult in this non-theatrical (i.e. video) sequel.

The score is by a terrific composer named Bruce Broughton!

Today is also National Molasses Bar Day.

Funny, I've heard of coffee bars, wine bars, beer bars...but wouldn't a molasses bar be, well, tacky?

From http://www.web-holidays.com/calendar/february/0208.htm

Quote

National Molasses Bar Day
February 8

Molasses Bars Recipes
makes about 30

1-1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup molasses
1/3 cup water

frosting
2 tablespoons butter, softened
1 cup sifted powdered sugar
1 tablespoon molasses
2 to 3 teaspoons water

Grease and flour a 13x2 inch baking pan.
Heat oven to 350°F.
Sift flour with baking powder, salt, soda, and spices, set aside.
Cream shortening with sugar until light; beat in egg, 1/2 cup of the molasses and 1/3 cup water.
With mixer on low speed, beat in the sifted flour mixture just until combined.
Spread in prepared pan and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a wooden pick or cake tester inserted in center comes out clean.
Place pan on wire rack to cool.
Frost while still warm.

To make frosting, combine butter, powdered sugar, and 1 tablespoon molasses. Beat in 2 to 3 tablespoons water. Spread over warm bars. Cut into squares.

Kind of like a gingerbread/blondie/bar-cookie thingy.  ;)

A question for our esteemed BK: How bad is the smoke in your area?  The news channels are reporting about the LA brushfires, and I'm wondering how they're affecting you.

And, while we're at it, what are your strongest brushfire memories?

Wasn't Bushfire a porn film?  Brushfire?  Never mind!

The two promo spots have been uploaded to the Disney server, and the updated scripts and the links have been sent to all the parties who needed to get it.  I'll be leaving here in a half-hour or so, doing some errands and then coming home.  I packaged up all the packages and will ship them early this afternoon.

Note to DRs SWoodyWhite and DerBrucer -  The traffic in and around DC has been quite unpredictable lately.  Moreso than usual.  Yes, they finally opened up the new exit ramp at the Springfield Mixing Bowl, but they've also started the re-decking project on the Roosevelt Bridge...  There was a fire in a row house near Dupont Circle this morning... And Old Town Alexandria is a mess due to the Massoui trial going on.

I'd leave a little more room in your travel time/plans just in case.

*And WTOP is also in the midst of changing radio frequencies.  They can still be picked up on 1500AM and 107.7FM, but their main signal now is at 103.5FM.  -The classical station that was there is now over at 104.1FM.  Traffic and Weather on the :08's!

I have indeed been to Clifton's, but not when I was a child.  Our cafeteria was Ontra, who had several restaurants - one in Beverly Hills, one in the Miracle Mile (on Wilshire), one in Hollywood, etc.  I believe I went into quite some detail about Ontra in the second Kritzer book.

DR Matt, your "father" in that picture looks familiar, but I can't place him.  Who played Charlie?

His name was David Horgan. I know he did a lot of regional theater back in the 1980s, and I heard he landed some national commercials later in the 1980s. He may even have guest starred on some shows, but I didn't watch TV much in the 1980s, so I wouldn't know if he got to LA or not.

I had a full afternoon watching things that were recorded last night. I started off with the first SCRUBS episode (had to use the VCR in the bedroom to get the second one at 9:30). Funny. Zach Braff's real-life girl friend Mandy Moore is doing a guest star arc on the show, and this was the first episode.

Good Afternoon!

I've spent a good chunk of the last hour entering my new and updated Lestat schedule into iCalendar.  It's nice seeing a very full March and April in my schedule.

:)

*However, I didn't realize that we are now opening on a Tuesday night.  I mean, I knew we were now opening on April 25, but I didn't realize it was a Tuesday.  And we also have a strange opening week schedule too:

Monday @ 8:00, Tuesday @ 6:30 (Opening), Wednesday @ 8:00, Thursday @ 8:00, Friday @ 2:00 & 8:00, Saturday @ 2:00 & 8:00.

Then we're off Sunday and Monday before our regular schedule starts up on Tuesday, May 2, at 7:00.

In any case... That's gonna be quite a busy week for Broadway Opening Nights:

The Wedding Singer - April 27
Hot Feet - April 30

My exec at Disney really liked the spots.  She only had one question about one word (which, of course, has been in the script since day one and was, in fact, her word to begin with), but that's an easy VO change.  Other than that, she thought we should use the Playhouse Disney graphics (my editor created his own little efx moves) and that, too, is really easy to do.  The rest of the people will see the spots on Friday morning and we'll have any notes soon thereafter.

The upcoming production of Shenandoah at Ford's Theatre just started rehearsals this week.  Scott Bakula is starring as Papa Charlie.

LOL, I just wrote a long post venting my moving frustrations from the day.  When I hit post, it said I wasn't logged in and the post was lost. That's probably for the best.  I just have to go with the flow now.  It's getting close enough that what I get done is what I get done and what isn't will just have to stay at the house until I can get to it. It isn't like I have to be out by a certain date and my handyman will come back and help me with anything I need.

So, I am going to go get some dinner - see if I can find an adapter plug for my dryer and come home and start working again.  It's the best plan I can think of. I'm going to take the computer and stereo up there tonight, so I won't be online again until Friday - after the move.  See you then

Jennifer now we have watched MEDIUM I read your Spoilers.  I basically agree with everything you said, and Keith asked me all the same questions you did.  So I gave him my version of what happened.

Elmore I think we are going to watch BLEAKHOUSE tonight.  We have been recording it in our guestroom where we watch while sitting on the bed.  While we were waiting for the new mattress to arrive for our new bed we opted to wait to view the show-more comfortable that way.

Possible "Lost" spoiler...  But not likely... Nothing plot related...

I thought "Lost" was over... But it wasn't... That was one long commercial break!

Next was LOVE MONKEY which was much ado about nothing - making a music video. I didn't enjoy that major plot much at all though the camaraderie between the four guys is always enjoyable.

It's funny how we can both love some shows like Veronica Mars, Lost and The Closer.  I really loved this episode of Love Monkey.  I think that the things i like about it are similar to what i like about Courting Alex (jenna elfman).  To me they are more geared for women.  I thought this episode was cute.  And I love how Tom always finds a way to make every situation work.  HE is so loveable!

DR Jane, glad you got caught up on MEDIUM. Did you think the youngest daughter was the same?

Today I went to see my little niece. She is 4 1/2 months old. And my sister's niece and nephew (the baby's cousins) came from up north and got to see her for the first time.  The older girl (10) was in love.  IT was so much fun getting to see them again. Since they live in Iqaluit we only get to see them for 6 weeks a year (2 visits of 3 weeks).

Off to watch BLEAKHOUSE.

Click on "Watch Civic" after the initial page loads.

Hello, fellow Dear Readers.

Well, I would rant today, but I'm too tired. The short story is that although the printer was delivered, the IT guy to install it never showed up or called. We waited two hours.

Hey a new soap.... The Printer Sagas!!!

I hope it gets resolved tomorrow DR Laura

George - Did you really dislike Disney's HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME PART II?  It did seem to be geared towards the age 3-to-6 set in its final released version, so you're certainly not the target audience.  :)

Anyway, Skip wrote three of the songs for it, and checks still happily come in (especially from overseas) even after all these years.  And there seemed to be a nice cluster of very good reviews from the official reviewers (although the consensus on imdb and amazon is decidedly "mixed") and it won the DVD Premiere Award for Best  Animated video premiere feature in a pretty crowded field that year.   Still, many who read the various drafts of the script thought the original script for that sequel, where the target age skewed a little older, was really excellent and exciting, but then they realized their target audience for the video sequel needed to be younger, so they had to simplify, simplify, simplify.

Now you've created interest in a DVD I would never have bothered with DR JFL! I think the Hunchback was  a great Disney animation but too old for its target. I've avoided all the "cash in quick" sequels of the Disney shows.

Speaking of annoying commercials, about two weeks ago this Republican (it figures) started running his political ad to unseat one of our Democratic senators.  The problem is that this ad is boring and stupid, it plays every afternoon in the middle of my favorite newscast, and the election is not until next November!

But I'm just guessing.

I used to like Steve Martin.  Lately he seems like a pathetic publicity whore.  This morning I caught a glimpse of him "hiding out" in a group of boy scouts on good morning america, and his "don't be a clouseau" movie previews give me hives.  I'm forgetting all of the reasons I used to enjoy him.  Ouch! I'm harsh... do you see what you've brought me to Steve Martin!! Turn it down a notch!!

Next was AMERICAN IDOL. THough the excruciating auditions of the supremely untalented are over, the auditions still continue with those who can carry a tune. Trouble is, the show doesn't give us more than a snippet or two of a song to hear some of them, and, of course, some of the ones who go through to the next round we never got to hear.

I talked to the fella tonight. He got a cold, but thankfully, not the flu and has been able to work through the stuffy head and sneezing. He still feels overly tired, though, and not 100%. Thinks it's going to be several days before he's back up to speed.

GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK was an excellent film! Has anyone else seen this one yet?? It was fascinating...and what was really great was that it was a nice, tidy 80 minutes long!

The entire cast was fantastic, but particularly David Strathairn as Edward R. Murrow and Frank Langella as William Paley. I don't know what awards this movie is up for aside from best movie, but Strathairn certainly deserves a nomination!

The scenes of Joseph McCarthy were quite chilling...this movie really gave you a good idea of the fear and panic that this man caused.

Oh, and the clothes and hairstyles were very authentic!

RAGING HORMONES - that's the title of my next novel.

Back from a lovelier than lovely dinner with Miss Tammy Minoff.  We had great conversation, dished the dirt, and we laughed and laughed and just when we thought we could laugh no more, we laughed again.  The food was spectacular, and I even have forty dollars left on my gift card.  Of course, to put that in perspective, forty dollars would buy a salad and a beverage.

I see that David Strathairn is up for best actor. Good for him...he did a wonderful job.

Actually, I've never seen it ::) so I would never say that I don't like it and I'm sorry if I gave that impression.  I think that it's wonderful that Skip wrote songs for it!  That's really cool!

I loved the original Disney cartoon and I really love the German cast recording of the stage version.  I think that it's one of the best scores that Menken has written and (from what I've heard...third hand) Disney won't allow it to be performed in the U.S., at all.  That's a shame.  And I agree with Tomovoz that it was too old for its target...if they had not had the "cute" gargoyles and had made it to be rated PG or even PG-13 (and didn't have the "happy" ending), it could've been a really great film, even better than "Beauty and the Beast" (in my humble opinion, IMHO in Internet lingo).
