Well, you've read the notes, the notes weren't too sucky, and now it is time for you to post until the sucky cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: MAGNILOQUENT!
-
Will we never get to page two?

Will the stupid Time Warner cable ever stop dropping signal?
-
Well, I guess I shall be on my way to the bedroom environment.

Click HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baykZwyC6IY&feature=user) for a clip of "You're Gonna Love Tomorrow/Love Will See Us Through" with the original Broadway cast on the David Frost show!! :D

Thanks for that clip link, DR George! :D I had not seen that before.

Glad that the Vixter's concert went well and was a positive experience.

***COPING VIBES*** for bk!

Hi, Singdaw. Check THIS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIof8V3-3rA&NR=1) out...it's Liz Callaway in the original Broadway production of Baby! Think about that...sneaking a 1983 video camera in into a theater. ;D

And the word of the day is: MAGNILOQUENT!
And The Song Of The Day Is: IT'S A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING

Good morning, all! Today, everything works! Perhaps my iMac was in shock over its move last night?
I loved the Masterpiece Theatre drama on Jane Austen's later life; very well done and moving. I recommend next week's 3-part PRIDE AND PREJUDICE to everyone.
The laundry is in, and I have a brief trek to the bank. After that, I will work here and await my two deliveries from UPS and Staples.
-
All caught up.
It's so much easier for me to catch up when I read HHW as a break from tax returns.
-
La de DAH de dah dah.
-
Yes DR JANE - Mr Frank Sinatra insisted that his character still be alive and kicking at the end of YOUNG AT HEART, unlike that of John Garfield in the original.
-
Monday morning greetings! Today's my day off and I have lots of errands to do and some puttering at home. DH Richard has requested a pot roast dinner, which will require that I stay home most of the afternoon.
-
My day off, too, DR GINNY!!!
And my schedule is much the same as yours....minus the cooking.

TOD:
The commentary on FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL and BEGINNING OF THE END is terrific. I wonder what they have in common?
I also VERY much enjoyed the extras on the EL CID dvd. Really fine interviews and some good coverage of material. I haven't watched the movie yet - but the clips make the color look very good and bright....I forget what MR BK said about it......but I shall see for myself.
-
Speaking of Cyd, lovely article on Tony Martin in yesterday's NY Times. (You may have to be registered with the Times to get the article, I'm not sure, but the gist is that he and Cyd are still very much alive and still very much in love.)

DR George - thanks!! Am looking forward to checking this clip out when I get home from work. I saw the original production several times, including the closing performance, and loved it - much more than the critics seemed to. :-\

Did bk do a DVD commentary for BEGINNING OF THE END? ???

Well, it was snowing and now it's stopped. New York was lovely for a moment and now it's damp and gray and ugly.
I do believe I will wander to the corner bodega for a few necessities.
-
Good morning. I'm at work, and must get busy, but thought I'd say hello. It's snow/rain/misting outside. I just hope it stays warm enough to keep it wet and not frozen.
-
So it's a gray day here as well. Sort of hard to be happy and peppy and bursting with love when it's a gray day..
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And, yes, the snow is stopping... Ah, well...
-
And now I need to hurry down to Chelsea for today's (short) round of callbacks.
Laters...
-
Good morning!
Pretty cold this morning, but it's going to warm up today to the 60s and tomorrow to the 70s. The joys of winter in the South!

Did bk do a DVD commentary for BEGINNING OF THE END? ???
Yes he did, with Flora & Susan Gordon. 8)

A quick thanks to bk for linking us to the London FOLLIES number of "Who's That Woman" and "Loveland" last night.
Seeing "Who's That Woman" gave me chills. I did get irritated that Stella (I assume Lynda Baron) kept singing behind the music. Fine if you're doing a solo, but once the counterpoint singing started, she should have been right on the beats, and she wasn't. Still, electrifying to see that choreography again.
Nice to see how the "Loveland" number was staged in London, too, though I still prefer the Broadway version's melody.
-
Wow - it is very foggy here this morning.
-
TOD:
I can't think of any Criterion commentaries I've heard that I didn't think enhanced the viewing experience. Most of those commentators are such experts with the careers of the directors of the films that they bring in a world of detail into their commentaries.
As I've said on many occasions, John Fricke's commentaries on the films of Judy Garland are peerless. I've listened to each one multiple times because they are professionally put together, he has a nice, easy conversational tone, perfect for commentary. The late Ron Haver also had a a brilliant way of enhancing a film through his commentaries. The one on Criterion's SINGIN' IN THE RAIN laserdisc is sublime, and he did a wonderful job with their KING KONG, too. I'd much rather hear his commentaries for those films that the ones used on their DVD counterparts.
-
TV Reminders:
New CBS comedy tonght: WELCOME TO THE CAPTAIN. Also the return of the usually funny THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE.
New episodes of THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES (and PRISON BREAK for those who watch).
Alas, no MEDIUM tonight.
-
Looks like I'll be spending most of my time today finishing up the DVD set of SOUL FOOD. Then it's on to another volume of Power Rangers. As juvenile as those are, they're kind of fun to watch.

Another clip that absolutely gave me chills sending me back decades to seeing them do it on the stage of the Winter Garden.
Can anyone seeing this not marvel at Sondheim's genius and also the superb counterpoint choreography of Michael Bennett for the two couples as they're singing and dancing together?
Just makes my heart ache that the entire show wasn't filmed.

I thought it was filmed and is available at the Museum of Performing Arts (or whatever it's called). At least several people have told me it is.

I thought it was filmed and is available at the Museum of Performing Arts (or whatever it's called). At least several people have told me it is.
To my knowledge, there are two half hours of footage (one sound, one silent) shot of the show on tour plus the footage we saw at YouTube some weeks ago that is about 15 minutes worth.
I know of no complete filming or taping of the entire original show.
-
Well, I had a rather touching time yesterday reuniting Frances' nephew with his long ago U of W and NYC friend. They are both pretty much slack-jawed at reconnecting after almost 50 years. And in the continuing synchronicity department, the theater guy here mentioned to me yesterday he was glad to be reconnecting with his old friends because he had just read of another of their class' alum's death--James Callahan. I'm sure you of a certain age will remember Mr. Callahan. Well, Mr. Callahan was married (at least at one time) to the eldest daughter of our next door neighbor in SLC! (This was around the time of "Wendy and Me"--remember that one?).

The entire ORIGINAL show or that low-wattage revival with Blythe Danner and Polly Bergen from several years ago?

The evil fairy MAGNILOQUENT boasted that she would destroy the fair princess Aurora, but the good fairies Fauna, Flora and Merriweather defeated her with their good wishes.

WBBL.

Yes DR JANE - Mr Frank Sinatra insisted that his character still be alive and kicking at the end of YOUNG AT HEART, unlike that of John Garfield in the original.
Than his character should have been more likable, even with the other changes made. I was young & still a big Sinatra fan when I saw the movie, and it never felt right.
The arrogance! It's also a bit laughable, dying didn't hurt John Garfield's popularity, he was so well liked they brought him back to play a different character in the-sort of-sequel.
-
The entire ORIGINAL show or that low-wattage revival with Blythe Danner and Polly Bergen from several years ago?
No, I've been told repeatedly that there's a video of the original production, complete, available for viewing at some museum whose name escapes me at the moment. But I could of course have been given incorrect info.
-
DR JMK - I'm pretty sure that the information you've been given is incorrect. :(

No, one of Sondheim's biggest regrets is that FOLLIES did not get recorded for the Lincoln Center NYPL Theatre Collection. Mine, too.
-
I bet FJL or Elmore will know, but I know I've been told (perhaps incorrectly) that the entire show is available for viewing at one of the Museums in NYC.
I believe there is a complete video of the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera production directed by someone not as good as the original director in the NYPL Collection.

TOD: I kiked the commentary track for "Sordid Lives"

This is going to be a LONG week. I have to work every day of it!
Sigh.
-
Tomorrow is primary day here in California and several of my folks will be missing all day. That's okay by me.
-
Thursday, my dentist will begin "fitting" one of my teeth for a new crown.
Sigh.
-
Oh and the Justin Timberlake commercial (Pepsi) was pretty funny.
I forgot to say though that my favorite ad was for PRISON BREAK.
They did this really excellent commercial where all the characters are running to escape.
And then they finally find a hatch, open it, and they are in the stadium.
Totally wonderful! I loved it. Everybody at the party (even those who don't watch the show) thought it was great.
-
Friday evening, a favorite County employee will be feted at a local nightspot as she will be retiring next month. I'm going to miss that lady.
Sigh.
-
I thought the Super Bowl halftime show totally boring.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers obviously have talent and a fanbase...but the entire presentation was a major letdown for me. Add to that the conceit of letting fans (read that: Fan Club!) onto the field with lights to complete the "concert" image they tried to put over.
Super Bowl halftimes USED TO BE spectacular and wonderful.
-
Next week....ah, NEXT WEEK will be special to me.
Tuesday is a County holiday (Lincoln's Birthday). And, the following Monday is a holiday (President's Day). So.............I'm taking the Monday off before the Tuesday holiday, and I'm taking the Friday off before the Monday holiday.
That's two FOUR-day weekends....with only two workdays separating them.
Those are MY KIND of work weeks!
-
I'm out on the verandah!
We have a verandah? :o
-
What else have you been holding out on me?
I suppose next thing you know, you'll be telling me that we have a lanai, too. ;)
-
We have a verandah? :o
Yes. And a yard. And a kitchen. And three bedrooms. And two baths.
And I'm thinking of adding a pool.

Okay, I mentioned I'm getting rid of some fun LPs - so here's a list - if you're interested just drop me an e-mail and I'll let you know the price. Some are cheap, some are expensive, none are on CD:
Hello, Dolly - original Israeli cast - lots of fun in an excellent sounding record from the mid-60s. On CBS Records from Israel.

Hello, Jerry! a rare UA LP in stereo of Jerry Herman (at the piano) and Orchestra playing B'way songs of the day from Dolly, Do I Hear A Waltz, Roar Of The Greasepaint, Fiddler, The Fantasticks, Funny Girl, Ben Franklin In Paris, I Had A Ball, and Baker Street. EXcellent condition.
My Name Is Jule - Jule Styne (at the piano) and his orchestra - another rare UA stereo LP, this time with Styne playing 47 of his hits, all in medleys to three and four songs. Really fun. Condition is excellent.
SCENT OF MYSTERY in STEREO - excellent copy, with a gorgeous jacket. Finding a mono copy of this album is not impossible, and they seem to go for between fifty and a hundred bucks. Finding a stereo copy is impossible - I have seen two come up on eBay in the last eight years - one was not in good condition and still brought a big price, the other was in excellent condition and sold for over $400.
The jacket on this album is prone to really bad rubbing because of all the black, but this copy is the best I've ever seen. This film was in glorious Smell-O-Vision, but I promise neither the music or the LP smells. The music is by Mario Nascimbene and is wonderful
HURRY SUNDOWN - Hugo Montenegro - a terrific score to Otto Preminger's film, and a great sounding RCA stereo LP in excellent shape, both jacket (save for a small blue "X" near the top) and album.
SALOME - a Japanese reissue of the 10" Decca album (the reissue is also a ten inch LP). Great score by George Duning (with the long Salome's Dance by Daniel Amfitheatrof). The LP is in excellent condition - the jacket looks like it got wrinkled a little (it's not made of hard cardboard like the original), but there are no tears or anything - just a few wrinkles).
THE JAZZ SOUL OF DR. KILDARE - Harry Betts and orchestra. On the great Choreo label (later renamed AVA), this wonderful album of TV themes of the 60s has great STEREO sound and wonderful and rare themes from Kildare, Cain's Hundred (also Goldsmith), Bus Stop (Arthur Morton), Klondike (Vic Mizzy), Hong Kong (Lionel Newman), Shirley Temple Show (Mizzy) and many others. I will also throw in an incredibly rare 45 on the same label (well, AVA), of Blues For A Hanging and Blues Time, from the TV show Blues For A Hanging, written by someone named Johnny Williams.
COMPOSER'S HOLIDAY - you probably are thinking, "Say what" about this Les Brown and his band of renown LP, but read on, MacDuff: All the music on this LP was composed specifically for this album, and it includes original and fantastic pieces by Elmer Bernstein, Andre Previn, George Duning, Dominic Frontiere, Alfred Newman and others. A very rare album in STEREO, and this copy is great-sounding and in excellent condition.
-
TOD:
I very much enjoy commentary tracks done by those who actually were involved with the film or tv show.
I do not like commentary tracks that are by people who just go "and now we see Dracula open the door and see Mina and now we see him go over and bite her neck...and now we see Dracula turn into a vapor..."

I took today off and shortly I will hit the shower and throw on my kurta and watch movies all day long...or at least that is the plan, Stan.
-
To agree with DR Ron, it's going to be a long week. I'm quite certain I have the beginnings of a cold, which sucks. (to use the bk vernacular of the day) I may go for a walk today, which may or may not help. It's really cold here in Northern Calif. today, but at least it's not windy or raining.
I decided to blow yesterdays eating off and not log in my food intake. I figured I used close to all my 44 points and some of my free weekly 35 points. Back on today, though. WW seems to be the easiest of all plans I've tried and I'm not about to stop now.
-
I will likely watch some Mamie Van Doren and a Japanese movie about a little baby fox.
If I survive, then I will watch something from India, perhaps.
-
BK, don't forget to put my visit next week into your little calendar thingamjig.
-
Well I'm depressed about Follies. Here I had thought that on some future visit to NYC I might be able to see it. Bleccch.
-
Off to the bank, the car wash, and the grocery store.
Heigh ho, the glamorous life...bye for now.
-
Teddy Wilson and his trio - GYPSY IN JAZZ - hard to find in stereo and this copy is great - a fantastic jazz performance of the score and it includes the cut Mama's Talkin' Soft.
Zorba - the instrumental version with full orchestra by Claus Ogerman - it's great! This is like new - it was sealed until I made my LP transfer.
-
I don't think we want to go there, do we?
Hey, I learned everything one needs to know about false eyelashes!
-
On Your Toes - my favorite recording of the score with Portia Nelson and Jack Cassidy on Columbia - only issued in mono. A great album, and this is not the commonly seen reissue, but the original pressing. Excellent condition.
Barefoot In The Park - my favorite Neal Hefti score - beautiful themes, great condition, on Dot Records in stereo.
The Fantastic Film Music of Albert Glasser! Great LP featuring original soundtrack scores to such classics as Beginning Of The End, The Boy and the Pirates, The Amazing Colossal Man, The Cyclops (all Bert I. Gordon films), The Cisco Kid, Big Town, The Buckskin Lady, and Top Of The World. On Starlog Records - Excellent condition.
-
TCB-Glad your bandage changing skills are improving.
Jennifer, how cute your niece won the pool.

And that's the LP story. One batch of CDs has been picked up.

And I'll begin writing in about fifteen minutes or so.

Will we never get to page five?

That's the title of my next soap pilot [once the writer's strike is over, of course]:
The Sucky and the Yucky

Concerning yesterday's comments about the lack of fairness in primary elections and our two party system:
A. We do not have a "two-party" system (granted, we currently have two major parties). We have at least three members of congress not affiliated with either major party (One Socialist, two independents). The U.S. Constitution does not address political parties, that is a state function.
B. In CA there are presently 6 State recognized political parties; each party is allowed to draft their own rules for Primary voter participation. For the Feb 08 Presidential Primary, as follows:
There are six parties fielding candidates in this election. California voters who wish to cast ballots in the Republican, Libertarian, Green or Peace & Freedom parties' primaries must be registered to vote with those parties. The Democratic and American Independent parties will permit "Decline to State" voters to participate in their primary elections. "Decline to State" voters who wish to do so must request a partisan ballot.
C. The argument for a closed primary is that the Party nomination should be controlled by party members - not outsiders. Would the local Lion's club let any walk-in vote in their office elections?. Should a walk-in Zoroastrian be allowed to vote vestrymen in an Episcopal church?. If Scientology had internal elections, would they let the local Psychiatrists participate?
D. Anybody can get their name on the Presidential ballot by petition.
Here endeth the lesson.

Another clip that absolutely gave me chills sending me back decades to seeing them do it on the stage of the Winter Garden.
I find it ironic that I first saw FOLLIES in its LA presentation in a spanking new state-of-the-art-theatre - which has now been torn town because it outlived its usefullness (read: land more valuable as high rise tower). It sure was a nice venue for A CHORUS LINE, SUNSET BLVD, and RAGTIME.

LIST OF THE DAY:
Californians
So as not to be outdone by all the redneck, hillbilly, and Texan jokes, somebody had to come up with this, you know you're from California if:
1. Your coworker has 8 body piercing's and none are visible.
2. You make over $300,000 and still can't afford a house.
3. You take a bus and are shocked at two people carrying on a conversation in English.
4. Your child's 3rd-grade teacher has purple hair, a nose ring, and is named Flower.
5. You can't remember . . is pot illegal?
6. You've been to a baby shower that has two mothers and a sperm donor.
7. You have a very strong opinion about where your coffee beans are grown, and you can taste the difference between Sumatran and Ethiopian.
8. You can't remember . . . is pot illegal?
9. A really great parking space can totally move you to tears.
10. Gas costs $1.00 per gallon more than anywhere else in the U.S.
11. Unlike back home, the guy at 8:30 am in Starbucks wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses who looks like George Clooney really IS George Clooney.
12. Your car insurance costs as much as your house payment.
13 . You can't remember . . .is pot illegal?
14. It's barely sprinkling rain and there's a report on every news station: "STORM WATCH."
15. You pass an elementary school playground and the children are all busy with their cells or pagers.
16. It's barely sprinkling rain outside, so you leave for work an hour early to avoid all the weather-related accidents.
17. HEY!!!! Is pot illegal????
18. Both you AND your dog have therapists, psychics, personal trainers and cosmetic surgeons.
19. The Terminator is your governor.
20. If you drive illegally, they take your driver's license. If you're here illegally, they want to give you one

I'm imagining that when you go for a walk tomorrow, all sorts of strange and beautiful things will have sprung up out of the ground to amaze and thrill you and will pose prettily for your camera.

They are working on our complex. The DD is going nuts, he's whiny and restless. If it hadn't been raining for ever, we'd take him to the dog park, but it's probably one big mud puddle. Why couldn't they work on the complex during the summer???

Here endeth the lesson.
der Brucer
(I could've won a million dollars...) I had a feeling I'd be hearing from you, DR derBrucer :-*
Yes, yes, you've got the facts on your side, BUT the reality check is:
A. I was not that in love with Ralph Nadar but voted for him because if the Green party had gotten a certain percentage of votes (it was like 6 or 10, or somewhere around there), it would have been eligible for some of that campaign dinero -- and then the monopoly held by the Demos and Repubs might have been cracked and America might actually have been on the road to true democractic elections -- and a true three, four, five. etc., party system in the future. (But instead I got burned in two ways -- the Green Party didn't get the percentage and Gore didn't get a bunch of those Green Party votes that otherwise he would have...) Sure, there are all kinds of parties out there and occasionally a Libertarian gets elected, but the reality of it is, America is a two-party system (that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it!) by design, by intent, by historical maneuvering, and by the money factor. So I can be quoted all the facts out there, but I know in my heart it's still a two-party system...
B-C. Sure, the parties can control their primaries and make them closed if they want to -- and sure there can be all that mumbo-jumbo in California or other states as folks mix and match primary rules as they like -- but it doesn't mean have I to agree with it, or think that it's right and above board -- or that I'm naive enough to not know that it all goes back to my earlier point about the historical maneuvering (i.e. that folks through the years have worked hard legally and illegally to keep this country a two-party system while throwing us a faux bone every once in a while...) I'm proud to be an independent and I don't thinks it's right to blackmail me into picking a party in order to be part of the primary process, but hey, that's the American way (at least in Arizona where I'm registered to vote) ...
D. Sure, I can petition to get on a ballot but guess how far I'd get without the right political connections and that all important dollar sign....(I saw a sample ballot for the GOP primary the other day and there were like 30 names on it and the only ones I knew anything about were the ones with the clot and the money -- McCain, Huckabee, Romney, Paul, Edwards and Guliani -- I had never heard of the other guys who petitioned and got on their names on the ballot...) ...
Love ya, der B, but I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one ...
-
DR George - I believe the Tony Awards performance of "I Want It All" from Baby is also on either YouTube or BlueGobo, as well.
I saw that, too. :)

Yes, I know you think the present sytem sucks - but I have yet to hear you propose a better one! You can't run a nation of 300 million people from a Townhall, and even if you could, the result would be mob rule, not an orderly government.

I spent most of the afternoon watching SOUL FOOD. I got through five episodes. I now have only three to go.
The show isn't big on guest stars. Terrence Howard guested on a couple of episodes as a feisty big-time basketball star, and Diahann Carroll was on one as the aunt of the show's three sisters.

There was one with actor T.J. Thyne ("Bones") who was pleased with some (insurance?) quote or other. He had brought a head shrinker with him in case he didn't get a quote he liked, and one of the workers asked to go home 'cause he had a small head.
It was SUCKY and YUCKY!

I did have time to zip through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Luke and Noah were on, and they were talking about getting together sexually, too. They weren't on tomorrow' previews.

First you brown an onion....
der Brucer
Sorry, not in my kitchen, DR der Brucer. I did season the English cut roast with Beau Monde and pepper before browning it. It's now simmering nicely in my electric skillet. The key is to keep adding water, but let it almost burn a time or two. That just happened for the first time. In an hour or so I'll add carrots and potatoes. When they're cooked, I'll remove the meat and veggies and add some Kitchen Bouquet to the juice. Yum, one of our favorite meals.

I've done four pages, will now take a lunch break and then do three or four more. I'm beginning to think I chose the right path and I think I should be able to slog right through to the end by mid-week.
-
It's been a profitable day: both the new filing cabinet and the storage tubs arrived. My biggest fear was that the storage tubs would be damaged and they were fine. I've unwrapped and vacuumed more books, started setting them out, and I think I will order one more filing cabinet before the week is out. I also got several checks tody but not, alas, the large amount I'm expcting from one of my cabaret singers who oes me a third of her invoice at the moment. The irony is that she sent me an email a week ago saying she owed me; so, where the hell is it?
I think when it comes in, I will buy a plane ticket to Ohio for a week and chill out. Maybe I'll take the Macbeths a peace offering of some bedding I have no use for.
DR Ginny, I wish I were dining with you and Richard tonight!
DR Jose, would you like a margarita?

Challenge Churchill! One in four think Winnie didn't exist (but Sherlock Holmes did)
By REBECCA CAMBER - Last updated at 21:12pm on 3rd February 2008
Never, in the field of human ignorance, have so many known so little about famous Britons.
A quarter of the population think that Winston Churchill never actually existed, a survey suggests.
While a poll recently named him the greatest Briton of all time, the wartime prime minister is seen by many as a mythical figure along with the likes of Florence Nightingale and Sir Walter Raleigh.
…
According to the survey of 3,000 respondents, many believe the inspirational Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi, Cleopatra and the Duke of Wellington are also characters dreamed up for films and books.
Some think Charles Dickens was himself a character in fiction rather than the creator of David Copperfield, Oliver Twist and Martin Chuzzlewit.
In a damning indictment of the nation's historical knowledge, many of those surveyed said they believe Sherlock Holmes was a real person, along with the pilot Biggles and even the Three Musketeers.
Almost 50 per cent were certain that Eleanor Rigby existed not just in the imagination of John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
And they were in no doubt about the existence of King Arthur, Lady Godiva, Robin Hood and Dick Turpin.

I thought that James Callahan died last summer or maybe even spring?

I thought the Super Bowl halftime show totally boring.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers obviously have talent and a fanbase...but the entire presentation was a major letdown for me. Add to that the conceit of letting fans (read that: Fan Club!) onto the field with lights to complete the "concert" image they tried to put over.
Super Bowl halftimes USED TO BE spectacular and wonderful.
I thought the girl from AMERICAN IDOL who sang the National Anthem did a wonderful job. It didn't top Whitney, but it was damn good.

How do you think I feel when I drive by a corner I've lived by all my life and suddenly couldn't tell which city I'm in?!
So I can be quoted all the facts out there, but I know in my heart it's still a two-party system......
You forgot to mention, DR Miss K, that both the Democratic and Repubican parties are mutatable - whenever a truly viable third alternative crops up, one or the other of the two top parties manage to absorb the philosophies into their own. Which is why no third party lasts as a player in elections for more than one Presidential election cycle.
-
To A: Yes, we have what is essentially a two party system. "Oh, look! SNACKS!"

I get it....you were citing a halftime-specific post and commenting in general....and I wasn't supposed to be confused.

My apologies, Ron. Would it help if we typed slower for you? ;)

And just look at our two Democratic Republicans Arnold Schwarzenegger and John McCain.
Lines are being blurred everywhere.
Barack Obama has convinced many people he can bring about "change". He doesn't say how he's going to do it, and he doesn't have any track record of ever having done it. But he's using the placebo effect of soothing words to make McCain look more and more like the man to vote for when Obama gets the Democratic nomination.
-
Add to the above that Schwarzenegger has come out and declared he's backing McCain's candidacy, and it's a win-win situation for them

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

The jernt is jumpin' so how can we only be on page eight?

How do you think I feel when I drive by a corner I've lived by all my life and suddenly couldn't tell which city I'm in?! A few of us have an alert system going when we run across some building torn down or replaced (or orchards cemented over). It keeps us from crashing into an intersection tht we used to know like the backs of our hands.
That is frustrating on a small scale, I feel for you Phoenix folks.
-
Woody, you were mentioning, the other day. the PBS production of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC with Sally Ann Howe. I think I still have a video of it around here somewhere. It has a couple of jumps in it, where my roommate attempted to tape over it, but basically the majority of it is there. I wonder if I can locate that video?
I remember recording it on VHS when it was shown, but cannot remember where my copy has gone.

Matthew, did you get my e-mail? If you're not interested in the LP let me know asap as I have a backup sale.
-
Can anyone identify the actors in this photo?
DR TCB - The play is called Hunting and Gathering. It's by Brooke Berman, and the actors are:
Michael Chernus (Astor), Mamie Gummer (Bess), Keira Naughton (Ruth) and Jeremy Shamos (Jesse)
Ben Brantley reviewed (http://theater2.nytimes.com/2008/02/04/theater/reviews/04hunt.html) it in today's New York Times.

People come, people go, like Grand Hotel.

I'm still exhausted. I'm thinking about doing another page but maybe not for a few hours. The big question is do I want to watch a DVD.

There's a picture out on the Internet (many times over, I'm sure) that's supposedly John Barrowman's "cake cutter" in a roll. ;)
I'm just sayin'.

I <heart> Keira Naughton. She's an amazing actress, and a pretty good singer too.
I also <HEART> Keira's father. ;)

They just started airing (here) the first 2 shows of the HBO show EXTRAS.
I'm not sure if i like it or not. I find myself a lot more into it whenever Christina from UGLY BETTY is on.
Btw, next week they will be starting (here) DEXTER and DAMAGES.
Does anyone think I might like these?

Cool beans - if you didn't include your address with the payment, send it to me separately.

TOTD. I have no interest in hearing directors or anyone talking about/over the films. I have at times enjoyed the extras such as deleted scenes (Gosford Park), related documentaries included, and of course the "extras" on the pixar films.

I've got to go find some sort of box to ship LPs in now. My mail place didn't have them. Anyone have any ideas? I think I used to use priority boxes, keeping them flat and just folding the ends in, but I worry about breakage. I know I've received LP-sized things in some sort of pizza box-like packaging - maybe I'll drive over to Staples and see what they have.

The above post was brought to you with the "help" of DR TCB.
Now back to listening to Barbara Cook singing about making her garden grow.

DR Jennifer - As for "Dexter", well... It's a about a "good" serial-killer, so... If you get squeamish at the sight of blood, killing and mutilations, well, this is probably not the series for you.
As for "Damages", the first episode sets the tone for the series, so... I loved it. Very gripping. But also very straight forward, adult, and brutal when it needed to be.

Re the YouTube London Follies Who's That Woman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEqLerV6Vgw)
I don't know where this was filmed/taped, but that's not the set as I remember it at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London. I do not remember ther being a set of stairs coming up to the stage, I do not remember that floor design, and I certainly do not remember the logo being lit as a backdrop during the show.
And yes, I was awake all through the show that night. I'd had trouble staying awake all through Les Miz a couple of nights earlier, but that was immediately following our nonstop flight from Los Angeles International, during which I had slept very little, and dammit I was tired. By the time der B and I saw Pacific Overtures and Follies back to back, I'd caught up with my sleep.

DR George, you know how I love to share :)

TOD:
The "making of" episodes that go with both Doctor Who (aka Doctor Who Confidential) and Torchwood (aka Torchwood Declassified) are well done. And the special DWC on the Doctor Who Concert filmed in Cardiff is a hoot.

You are correct, DR SWW. I've seen that clip before - and in a better, cleaner copy. If I'm remembering correctly, the vid is from either a tribute show for Cameron Mackintosh or an awards ceremony.

DR MattH, I was wondering if you were going to comment on AS THE WORLD TURNS (spoilers i guess if there is anyone here who watches).

*
I don't watch it. But there are a lot of posts about what happened today on the cbs.soaps board. It sounds like a lot happened! They kissed. There was a lot of talk about sex.
I'm still so curious what they will show (if anything) when the time comes.
-
How can my 3-day weekend be over already? Ah, well, at least I'm only working 4 days this week - taking Saturday off for an AAUW luncheon at which the speaker is an immigration attorney from NE Ohio. That means no information-waitressing day this week - hoo and ray.

ANYTHING GOES
JOHN BARROWMAN
Published by Michael O'Mara
John Barrowman's autobiography was never going to be a serious tome - 20 years in theatre have left him with an irrepressible luvvy gene that sings from every page.
Gossipy, fun and endlessly entertaining, buy this out of curiosity, buy it for the insight into the worlds of stage and television, but most of all, buy it for his absolutely hilarious stories of a Glasgow childhood with a granny you'll just adore.
Barrowman set out to create a book that was like "lounging in our pyjamas on the couch in my living room, sharing a pot of tea and having a laugh about my life so far." Does he achieve that?
John, honey, pass the biscuits.

But 5:50am, when my alarm goes off, will come as quite a shock, so
Good Night, HHW!
-
Staples was no help, so I guess I'll try the priority box route - I used to send laserdiscs like that and never had a problem. Basically, you take a normal sized priority box but don't make it look like a folded box - the lps fit right in and then you bend the ends over and seal. They're pretty sturdy.
-
...I'm still so curious what they will show (if anything) when the time comes.
Probably less than you saw in Brokeback Mountain.
Heck, probably less than you've seen in any other sex scene in American soaps.
And definately less than was shown in Kansas City Trucking Co.
:o ;D :o ;D :o ;D :o ;D :o
-
RE: DR SWW's comments.
I've actually never seen BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN.
It's sort of confusing to me. Cause 1) it is daytime.
but 2) the soaps are known for showing sex.
I really don't think they will show anything. Maybe just a kiss and an implication of what they are doing.
-

Bruce, U-Haul is a good source for boxes. There used to be a U-Haul store in Santa Monica, but that would be a bit far. Check their website. They tend to have a good selection of sizes and good prices--much, much better than (my) Staples.

I remember seeing EVITA here on stage (before the movie came out). And i just loved it so much.
I think it helps if the actress playing Eva is great.

That was what the problem was when I saw it!
-
Good evening. Well tonight I am soon off to see Evita. I'm looking forward to it. I'm just hoping it wil be a good production. Sometimes we get good quality and sometimes it's terrible. I've always liked the music to Evita and the story of Eva Peron, so it will be a fun evening for me.
DUH!
The auditions I played today were for the current tour of Evita - which I'm guessing DR Cillaliz is currently seeing.
-Just remember, I was only the pianist at the auditions. I had no say in who got cast or how the show directed. ;)
-
I'm still exhausted. I'm listening to a sort of fun musical from Germany - never heard of it - I got it because the music is by Harold Faltermeyer, who scored quite a few 80s films like Beverly Hills Cop and Thief of Hearts. It's quite tuneful, has a nice-sized orchestra with strings and everything, and the singers are very good. Anyone heard of it? It's called Wake Up.
-
At long last page ten.
-
Will we never get to page eleven?
-
And definately less than was shown in Kansas City Trucking Co.

BK, I know it's not Wednesday's Ask BK Questions Day (no really, I do), but when you make CDs from LPs, whether you keep the LPs or sell them, do you scan or copy the record covers to make CD booklets or do you just type out lists of the songs?
I personally like to scan the covers and make booklets with the original artwork. At work, we have a copy machine that's also a scanner, and if we don't actually print anything (which would cost), we can scan images and e-mail them to our work e-mail, which I can then e-mail to my home e-mail and make a booklet. :) I have to scan each side of the cover twice and patch it together, but that's better than my home scanner where I have to scan each side at least four times! I was very happy when we got this copier/scanner at work...and were given permission to use it for personal use if we don't do anything that incurs a cost, like printing :D

Another suitcase in another hall...
Another bunch of actors on the bus....
This tour went out last year. It's non-Equity, and it's still directed and supervised by Larry Fuller, the original choreographer. I'm guessing it's a good tour. However, this tour is also going out with the "new" orchestrations. I believe it tours with a band of five(?!?!?), and the new arrangements were apparently supervised and approved by Sir ALW himself. :-\

Goes out with a band of 5? Are they not using local players on their stops? Yikes
No locals hired. I believe almost all the tour personnel are non-union.
As for the small band, Evita is not the only ALW show to have new "streamlined" orchestrations. I'm not sure why they were reduced, but they were. And from what I understand, even though R&H still licenses and rents out the original 23-22 piece orchestration, they too will soon be licensing the new reduced orchestrations. But I may be totally wrong about that.
-
DR Jennifer, I have no idea if you would like any of those shows, but I can tell you that DAMAGES and DEXTER are both superlative shows unlike anything else on television. EXTRAS is absolutely hilarious to me, but comedy is a personal thing, and for some, Ricky Gervais' ultra dry, ultra droll sense of humor leaves them flat.
Again, all I can say is to sample them yourself and see what you think. In the case of DEXTER and DAMAGES, the first episodes pretty much set the tone for both series, so if you don't like the first show, you won't like the rest of them.
-
I began my evening by finishing SOUL FOOD. SOme highly melodramatic situations put in the last episode to serve as cliffhangers for the next season. Really just found the show OK and nothing more.
-
I have nothing to say, except that it is cold and drippy outside.
-
Next, since I watched the first part of that two part CLOSER off TNT-HD last night, I put in the DVD tonight so I could watch the second half of that story again. ENjoyed it a lot, and I have to say that the second season DVDs look really wonderful upconverted to HD.
-
Next, I watched tonight's TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES. Brian Bloom was a primary guest star, and he's looking more beautiful than ever, even if he was playing a cyborg. Dressed in Army fatigues, he was quite a sight!
And the newest Terminator is being played by Garrett Dillahunt who always does a great job. I enjoyed the episode tonight a lot.
-
I concluded my evening by watching last night's post-Super Bowl episode of HOUSE. DR Jane was completely correct: it was a super episode and Mira Sorvino was terrific. A really nice surprise as the mystery disease, and an even nicer surprise at the end of the show about Wilson.
-

I don't do the covers - I have a nice CD cover template that I use with the thin cases, and I type out the song list on the back of that, so I have the album title on the front and the program info when you open the case.
-
I think I'll do a couple more instrumental covers of shows, i.e. Ray Ellis doing How To Succeed and Frank Chacksfield doing She Loves Me.

Okay, talk about a small world: I got an e-mail just this evening from someone, inviting me to join Facebook. So, I did. I put in my profile that I went to Western Washington University, class of '89 (which I did). I clicked on the WWU link and one of the people who had also signed up on Facebook was Kari (pronounced Kah-ree). She was a friend of mine at Western! Not a close friend, but a friend. I couldn't view her profile (I don't know why) but I viewed her friends list and one is from Olympia! (I don't know him.) I clicked on his link and was able to view his profile and the two comments that he has are from Kari. One says that she's "on the national tour of Evita singing my little heart out - ha ha!" And the other says, "Congrats! Too bad -- we actually played Olympia last November (tho not such a great theatre)."
Not a great theater?? That was the Washington Center, where I usher all the time! I was asked to work backstage for that show but I couldn't because I was in Nite of the Living Dead! I would've seen her! And think...today, just when Jose and Matthew posted here about the national tour of Evita, I got an e-mail to join Facebook, and saw someone I knew in college who is in that exact tour!
What a coinkydink! ;D

...And from what I recall, there are actually a couple of cast members from Washington State on the tour right now. I remember them flying in from Seattle to audition for the tour... And then flying back again for their callbacks. Of course, totally at the their own expense. And I believe the guy was hired sort of at the last moment, and had something like three days to fly back to Seattle, get his stuff in order, and then fly back to New York city for rehearsals.

That reminds me of when my sweet dear sister said, just the other day, "That guy looks like a 1970s porn star"....and I asked her how she would know what a 1970s porn star looked like.
She had no answer.

DR JRand is partly right...I will be in Los Angeles [part of] this weekend as I arrive in Burbank on Sunday.
BK is correct in that the Ray Court Show is not until the following weekend..well, Friday and Saturday.
And DR Kerry, and any others who are curious, here is the line-up for the show...http://www.hollywoodcollectorshow.com/Burbank.htm (http://www.hollywoodcollectorshow.com/Burbank.htm)
-
How was the show, DR Cillaliz?
-
Well, let's have a good hold haineshisway.com get-together with MBarnum when he arrives. I can probably rustle up Cason, and Miss Patti, and perhaps one or two others, like singingnymph.
-
Will we never get to page twelve?
-
How was the show, DR Cillaliz?
Oy! I just wrote a long post about the show and the site said I wasn't logged in so I lost it.
Ok, let's see....overall, I really enjoyed the show. I wouldn't give it a rave review, but it was good and I'm very glad I went.
There are actually 6 people in the "orchestra" 3 keyboards, guitar, bass and drums. I thought the arrangements worked fine. You have to understand we have had non-equity shows with canned music. Having real musicians is a good thing.
Cameron Wade played Eva. She has a very sweet voice. This worked in some places, but sometimes I would have liked a little more edge to it. Overall she did a very good job and her performance got stronger as the show progressed.
Omar Lopez-Cepero was Che. He was great.
Philip Peterson was Juan Peron and he had a fabulous voice. When he started singing it was one of those "Whoa, this guy can sing" moments. He's played Che and Magaldi in the past.
So, it was an enjoyable evening. The house (2500) was sold out or nearly sold out. The audience gave a standing ovation, but not until Che and Eva were taking their bows and it was more of a polite standing O rather than a jump up and scream standing O. The buzz after the show all sounded positive.
-
Thanks, DR Cillaliz.
-
And since I'll be playing a Chorus Call in about nine hours...
Goodnight.

That was the reader's digest condensed version of what I thought of the show. I can give more details if anyone is interested. But I'll do it tomorrow. Tonight I must sleep
