And now - for those who enjoy it - an Unseemly Trivia Contest question:

Two plays - one season.  The season was littered with flop plays.  Play one was one of many flop comedies that season.  It was directed by someone who was equally known as a producer and playwright and who had several hits, one of them a big musical comedy.  The cast included an actor making a sort of comeback, said actor being most well-known for playing one role early in his career.  A female co-star would go on to appear in a classic musical, and a male co-star would go on to appear in two classic musicals.

Flop play two ran a bit longer than flop play one, and was adapted from a novel.  Even though the play was a flop, it would ultimately be turned into a hit film. The person who adapted it would, just a few short years later, write a classic musical.   The play starred someone who'd appeared on Broadway many years prior to this play, but who was much better known as a motion picture star.  Also in the play was an actor who, a few short years later, would co-star in a classic motion picture, and then star in a classic motion picture, which would lead to him to becoming a beloved film star of his era.  Also in the cast was an actor who would, a few short years later, star in a classic musical.  Another co-star originally began a career in a different field of show business, and said co-star was very successful in said field.  Said co-star also became legendary for one piece of comic business.

So:

Play one:  Name the play, name the director, and name the big musical comedy he directed.

Name the actor who was making a sort of comeback, name the role he was most famous for playing, and name the reason for the sort of comeback.

Name the female co-star and the classic musical in which she'd appear.

Name the male co-star and the two classic musicals in which he'd appear.

Play two: Name the play.

Name the star who played the lead

Name the co-star who would co-star in a classic movie, then star in a classic movie, and name the two movies.

Name the co-star who would go on to star in a classic musical and name the musical

Name the co-star who started out in another field of show business, tell us what said co-star did, and name the comic piece of business the co-star would become legendary for.

Good luck to one and all and also all and one, and remember DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS TO THE SITE - send them to me in an e-mail to bruce@haineshisway.com.

No, I wasn't...but it was a fun trip. :) The very large cast performed quite well for a bunch of kids, but then the summer theater program has always put on good shows.  And since Once On This Island is one of my all-time favorite shows, there wasn't much chance of me not liking the production. ;)

The Monsoon update: We need to have three consecutive days with a dewpoint average of 55 degrees or higher. We had it Thursday. We had it today. If we have it tomorrow, The Monsoon is officially here.

Truly, it is so miserable here in the summer we watch the dewpoint for something to do. It is a big thing.

Good morning, all!  After a lovely dinner last night with DR Jose, I wandered home, puttered about the apartment and watched the Thursday night episode of BURN NOTICE that I had recorded.  I really ov this series, and last night introduced Wesley's ne'er-do-well brother.

Today I return to Toyland to work on an endless number titled "Harleguinade," so I've been reading a history of British pantomime and Haqrlequinades to prepare myself for the background on the piece. Unfortnately, I have no synopsis of what staging was done to this long piece of music, although I do know that it involved Montgomery & Stone, Harlequin, Columbine, police, and Cinderella's cat Mouser.  After that, I have to deal with the Harry Potter situation - unless (hopefully) Charlotte's copy arrives today before she leaves town for three weeks - and then at 4:45 Iattend a play written by a former co-worker from Barnes & Noble.

Kirk Douglas is not one of my favorites either.....but I certainly have enjoyed some of his performances including

ACE IN THE HOLE, as mentioned by MR BK in the notes, and I am happy to hear about this Criterion release.  The movie always reminds of the first news event I remember hearing my parents talk about which is a little girl who fell into a well....in California I think....her name was Kathy Fiscus....and the country was enthralled with the rescue efforts, which I think, failed.

I also like Mr Douglas in:

My mother's sister Ruth talked a lot about the Kathy Fiscus tragedy! And, of course, ACE IN THE HOLE is inspired by Floyd Collins, whose tragedy was rather forgotten until Adam Guettel resurrected him.  My father was born near the Collins homestead, and I have memories of either seeing Floyd's tomb or the site where he died.  Perhaps both.

RE: harry potter (no spoilers).

There is something that confuses me.  Okay perhaps a lot of rabid fans went out at midnight to get the books.  And perhaps some got deliveries early (like DR jose's roomie).

But yahoo's homepage as the headline (something like) "well you've all probably gotten your copes of harry potter by now ..."

Um, it's only 7am in the morning.  I can't even imagine that a small percentage of those who will get the book have it by now.  Am I the only one who finds it completely ubsurd that they think this?

I actually haven't read any of the books (have seen the movies). But i have to head out to costco this morning to get my sister a copy (she is out of town). I suppose i could read it if i wanted to. Although since i haven't read the last ones it probably wouldn't make any sense to me.

Oh one more thing. For all those people trying to avoid spoilers, is it really that hard? I mean obviously if you read an article about the book there might be spoilers (but it seems obvious not to read reviews). But are there actually places that are showing spoilers without warning?

Why would he think/say that? I don't think the producers ae allowed to play with the votes.

I've been reading the televisionwithoutpity forum. And most people were completely livid (as was i) about the eliminations this week. Although most people were more upset about anya, than hok.

Personally i loved them both. But i was more upset at the thought of hok not being on tour. His hummingbird routine was something everyone would have wanted to see. And his solo dancing is stunning.

I'd like to hear anything else you know.

But my gosh the show rubbed me (and lots of others) the wrong way this week.

Not me, though - just meeting them for brunch and then cutting out.  I will quietly and patiently await next week for a return visit.  Well, maybe not so quietly and not so patiently, but await I will.

Another beautiful day here - I will look for some outdoor time.  And now that our esteemed BK has shamed me into thinking about the clutter, maybe toss some of that, too.

Having seen the Criterion ACE IN THE HOLE three weeks ago for the first time, I was blown away by it and by Douglas' performance. He's as good in this as he ever was.

CHAMPION is my favorite performance of his, but I also like DETECTIVE STORY and THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL.

He is at his best when he plays a heel. I would like to have seen him played R.P. McMurphy in ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST on Broadway. He might have been a little old for it then, but I'll bet the part suited him well.

Yes, DR DakotaCelt, the MOONLIGHTING episodes feature wonderful banter between the two stars even when the stories let them down. I've started noticing that during the second season Cybill started having the cameraman use diffusion on her close-ups. So silly to be that beautiful and young and be worried about showing any age.

You're just doing the movies?  There's tons of stuff in the books that haven't been filmed.  The two eldest Weasley brothers have never made it into the movies.  Dobby is much more important in the books, as are house elves in general, and Kreacher, an important character in Order of the Phoenix, was reduced to a walk-on on screen.  And Peeves, the Poltergeist, hasn't been in any of the movies, either!  For me to say any more would probably result in spoilers.

A clutter story:

The other day I was sorting through some boxes'o'stuff, as DR JOSE so aptly calls them, when I came across a stock certificate for 10 shares of some company I never heard of, purchased by my parents in 1963. I doubt that it's worth anything, but feel compelled to investigate. YOU NEVER KNOW! I did a Google search and found one entry only--a letter on that company's letterhead, signed by the same name that's on the certificate. It's long-winded and rambling and I really can't fathom why it was even written. It's about wild hogs. Beats me!

I spoke to my stock broker yesterday about it. Apparently, this sort of thing comes up from time to time, but is seldom of any value. There is the off chance that that company was bought out, then maybe even bought out again, and is now part of a going concern. We shall see. Who knows? Maybe I'll end up with 3 shares of Exxon/Mobil. :)

Clutter.

Ugh! I live with it, particularly stockpiling things like old copies of Theater Week and IN Theater which I know I'll never read again but just can't force myself to throw away.

And DVDs, of course. They seem to pile up because it takes a week or more to get through a boxed set of discs and others come in while you're trying to do that.

Even being retired, there aren't enough hours in the day to get everything watched, read, listened to, and studied. It's an endless proposition.

When my father passed away twelve years ago I turned his house upside down, looking for a certificate for some bond shares he held. Never found it. I was also looking for some Hollywood memorabilia of value. We had so much that we just threw out. It took me nine months to get the bonds transferred into my name, largely because I could never find the certificate. And I never did find the memorabilia I was looking for.

But, despite the advice of some friends who say to just toss it all wholesale, I do feel compelled to look at every piece of paper. My new motto: YOU NEVER KNOW. Or, as one friend says, "Sh*t happens. Luck happens."  Well, I certainly agree about the first part!

I have been in the process of decluttering myself

A number of things including some clothes I no longer wear are earmarked for several places including Rape and Abuse crisis center, a couple of senior living places who are taking the old issues of National Geographic, Readers Digest, and Smithsonian. They were happy to take them.  I am donating two suits that no longer fit me to a group that collects gently worn professional / quality dress casual clothes for women who need them for interviews, etc. Several winter coats are going to a coat drive that is in two weeks.

However, I really need to get this genealogy research in some order... It seems to grow and reproduce at will.

DAKOTA, could you pass on the name and address of that organization either here or in a PM? I have a ton of business clothes that I should reconsider. They're in perfect condition and too nice to just toss. The consignment shops here don't want anything that's more than 3 years old.

The one that is in Fargo is called Dressed for Success. It is through the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center and also in part with Job Service ND. It is geared to help women get out of abusive situations and rebuild their lives and help them with interviewing skills and get the appropriate clothes.

I know the Today Show has featured similar organizations also. I would check with the Rape and Abuse or  Domestic Abuse organization.  The one here in Fargo has been here for a number of years.

A number of years ago before I moved to Fargo, I donated an old Word Processor  and an old typewriter to the Rape and Abuse center in Grand Forks. They nearly cried for it was tools that allowed these women to write letters to lawyers and stuff in a safe place.

It made me feel good for I know they were not brand new but they were still serviceable and the last I heard they were heavily used for several years.

DR Jeanne - I believe there is a "Dressed for Success", or at least a very similar organization in DC that's run by one of the women's centers.  I'm sure if you call "7 On Your Side" or WRC's help line, you could find a suitable ( ;) ) place for your gently-used clothes.

Another organization that I donated money to in the past and  even donated fleece  and some fabric for making blankets is called "Project Linus". The organization makes blankets for babies who are in ICU in in hospitals in the region.

It was featured last spring on the Today Show.

Hearing that someone else has clutter was reassuring; I feel less guilty, Re. Mr Douglas, my favorite KD performance by far is in THE FURY; It has a great John Williams score, and without giving away any of the plot. early in the film Mr Douglas has one of those "if looks could kill" looks that you would never want to get in the way of.

Yes, thank you, Jose, there is one here. I checked with them a while back. They were very particular about what they would accept--only large sizes, for one thing. Mine are all small sizes. But I shall keep looking.

I often have things I'd be quite happy to give to a good home--if I just knew of someone who could use these things. It's an unlikely-sounding problem: many of us have things that are usable, others are in need; it's a matter of matching us up. I'd prefer to give directly to those in need, rather than to have something sit for ages at a thrift shop.

I have decided to stay home today and work on de-cluttering. I've been working every day and then working at the new house at night, and I REALLY need to address the clutter.

bk, one look at my house would make yours seem neat and spacious in comparison.

When we move, we are going to be exiting quite a few groups that seem to involve a lot of paper work. Plus we won't be as involved in the city, (more paperwork!).

I've been in this 1,000 sf house for 27 years and am a packrat, plus I seem to have married someone who isn't as much of a packrat but conservative and hates waste. Therefore, unless there is a way to recycle something or find someone who can use it, I have to throw things out on the sly!

I am going to try and be brutal today and thin the herd of books and clothes!

One more post about decluttering. Several years ago when I had a lot to get rid of I phoned quite a few organizations, looking for homes. I learned that some accept furniture, some accept clothing, very few pick up these day. Virtually all accept cash. Knowing who to go to is an art. And, of course, this changes. My favorite thrift shop with the courteous manager who would send someone around to pick up my donations is no longer. I see people throw out no send of stuff that still have life left in it. Just yesterday, a friend in LA was telling me about someone he knows who furnished her whole house with items that folks in Beverly Hills threw out.

I have all sorts of odds and ends from renovation that I've offered to (1) my old handyman (Marvelous Matt doesn't want them), who is a worse pack rat than me, (2) my friend Bart, who renovates lots of old houses. I'll take some things to the local ReStore, too, for a tax deduction. (I have $1100 worth of thermal panes for the french doors, which are the wrong thickness. The guy from the glass company failed to measure them properly. Fortunately, the company supplied the correct panes, but only after a lengthy battle.)

I will say this: throwing out gets easier as you build up momentum. Is it that I found that I survived without that last pile'o'stuff? Am I losing my packrattedness? Or is it the high cost of housing these days, which prohibits me from the size of house I'd like? Don't know, but I'm still tossing.

And I, too, hope that both DRs NOEL and FJL will share NYMF stories with us here.

I love the notion that people are interested in Such Good Friends as it develops.  And, of course, I'm very interested in all the new Brain and Starfighter developments.  Is there a specific place where the creation of these sci-fi musicals was discussed?  Or, if news came in the daily discussions in dribs and drabs, then it was foolish of me to have missed it.

Dear Wife Joy loves the casting process, but I confess to you all, I can't stand it.  At the end of the day yesterday, I watched roughly 180 pictures and resumes get discarded, and this is emotionally devastating to me.  Some of my closest dearest friends came and did not get seen.  One was #146 on the waiting list we never got to.  All of these 333+ aspirants put on their best make-up, clothes and shoes, and spent less than two minutes in the room.  They'd say, if pressed, that this was a good experience, as EPAs go, because they were getting seen for five different shows, with at least a dozen writers, directors and casting people in the room.

The reality is that most roles aren't cast out of the EPAs.  There's also something I can't think about without welling up.  Some of the best auditions came from young fellows who remind me of me when I was a young fellow.  Short, Jewish, quick-witted.  Part of my decision to abandon my childhood aspirations of being a performer had to do with seeing how few roles there are out there for short, ethnic, smart-alecks.  Now, all these years later, I've written a show in which the young characters must be waspy and not seem so brainy.  So I'm in the position of rejecting those most like the younger me.  And some of them gave wonderful auditions.  Maybe my next show will have to be autobiographical.

In the past two months I've reduced my cast size from 19 to 14 to 10.  There were good reasons for doing this, but I've this hard-to-shake compulsion to say to everyone no longer being considered "I'm SO sorry I don't have a place for you in my show."  When am I going to get over this?

I came across a stock certificate for 10 shares of some company I never heard of, purchased by my parents in 1963.

I'm afraid it's probably not worth much...I don't think it did too well at the box office.

Doctor Who, broadcast on the SciFi channel, had an interesting episode last night.  "Gridlock" started with a Grant Wood joke, and included an interesting variation on a car chase - what happens when all the cars are in gridlock, and standing still?  The business at the beginning and end, where the Doctor describes to Martha the burnt orange skies of his home planet, and the orange skies at sunset on New Earth, made for a great bookend effect.

Noel -  The Last Starfighter had had its premiere production a while before I joined the HHW board, so there were no details about the show's initial development here on HHW.

But there was much about Seattle's Village Theatre Festival of New Musicals in August 2006 (I was so happy that George and PennyO were able to attend that), and about BK's co-starring in the readings last September co-presented by NYMF and the Village Theatre (which many of the NY-based HHWers attended).  If you're inclined to look back at HHW from September 23 to 30, 2006, there is much by Bruce in the notes of his experience of coming to NYC to perform in our readings.

And we're really happy that Michael S actually set up a page on Bruce's site about our show, which includes an interview we had about the genesis of the show and the Village Theatre Festival.  (Thanks again, Michael S, for doing this!)

http://www.brucekimmel.com/LastStarfighterSTAGEInformationPage.htm

And there's detailed info about the development of Last Starfighter in the liner notes to the Kritzerland CD.

Gosh, I'm being such a shill today!  :)

Floyd Collins was mentioned in ACE IN THE HOLE, but that didn't stop the owner of the rights of that true story from suing and settling with Paramount Pictures before it was released.  Interesting....and after DR ELMORE pointed it out earlier today....I have been reading about the Collins case - not the musical - and it seems that ACE IN THE HOLE takes MANY story points from that incident.

JRand - Interesting, there was a Law and Order episode that bore a striking similarity to Strangers on a Train, and they seemed to get around any copying issues by specifically referring to the characters having gotten the idea for their plot from Strangers on a Train.  Did the mention of Floyd Collins in Ace in the Hole seem designed  to try to get around any unfair copying charges, i wonder (perhaps rhetorically :) ) ?

Sort of a weird thing happened last night.  Went out to dinner for my uncle's birthday and a fairly nice restaurant.  I had babyback ribs. But they give way too much.

Actually i was completely full before i even started the main course. I had eaten 2 rolls (very good) and nachos and spinach dip.

Okay so i had most of my ribs left (why stuff myself when they taste so good the next day). Plus my mom gave me the rest of her ribs (so i really had a lot). But i also had like 1/3+ of my fries and a full thing of coleslaw.

Now i ask the guy to package my food, but when he comes back there are only ribs (but no fries and coleslaw). I was trying to decide if it was rude to ask him where they went. :)

Anyhow i decided to nicely ask him why he only brought my ribs. And he was like, "well there weren't that many left, did you want them?"

So he ended up bringing me new fries and coleslaw.

I guess most people only want their meat. But i just found it odd that he didn't ask if he wasn't sure!

Harry Potter Spoiler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is a very thick book.

There was an article on Comcast.net that talked about spoilers for the book and I went to a couple of the spoiler websites that were linked in the article.  One page no longer existed and the other had one major bit of information that I found out this morning was completely wrong. ::) I'm at work and a co-worker has a copy of the book and she read some pages at the end of the book and saw that this particular info (about who was going to die) was incorrect.  Not that I care, because I haven't read ANY of the books (I have seen the first four movies, though), but I thought that it would be interesting to see if this spoiler page was correct or not.  And it's not entirely correct.

I guess most people only want their meat. But i just found it odd that he didn't ask if he wasn't sure!

This has happened to my sister...and it's happened more times than you would think.  My sister does not eat a lot and really wants to take home all her left-over food.  She has gotten to the point that she has to specifically tell the waitperson(s) to wrap up everything to go and if they "accidentally" throw something away or "assume" that she didn't want the side items, she makes them get her some more.  Good for her, I say!

DR MBarnum, there's a new horror film BEEF coming out about a young man killing body builders! Is this the film on which you were acting as an adviser?

Oh btw, for BOSTON LEGAL   fans:

I think at the end of the season it was reported that a number of people were leaving the show.

Apparently some were signed at the last minute. So now only julie bowen and constance zimmerman are leaving. Rene A and Mark valley are staying.

But Julie and Mark's characters just had a baby and got married!  What are they gonna do with that??

I got a very good shopping buy today.

One of my passions is purses.  I was at Winners (not sure if it is a Canadian store, but they basically sell clothes by other labels) (although they also sell books, toys, jewellery, purses...).  Anyhow i glanced at the liquidation purses and happened to notice a purse i had liked for $36 (regular $115).

Anyhow after studying it i noticed a couple of bead had fallen off ot if (not very noticeable). But since i pointed it out to the salesgirl she gave it to me for $30.  I put the little coin purse over the spot and now it's not even noticeable at all!

She could be a stay at home wife.

I've eaten there before and never had a problem.

I just don't get why the waiter would not ask if he was not sure.

Anyhow i did get fresh fries and coleslaw.

He said it was no big deal.  But i agree. I think it is better to just make sure to say "wrap everything including the fries"!

I also found it weird that they did not bring everyone's food out together.  A restaurant of this calibre should not bring out rib steaks 10 minutes before the rest of the table got any food!  I personally did not care since i was not very hungry. but i know sometimes people feel bad starting before everyone has their food.

I got a cute call from 1 1/2 yr old niece this morning (she is out of town visiting Nigara Falls today).

Anyhow (and she is a bit hard to understand sometimes), she says, "hi auntie ... grover".  Well at least it sounded like grover to me. It could have been flower. :)  I asked my sister why she was saying grover to me (was she wearing grover diapers?). My sister thought she was.

So i guess she decided to announce that to me.

Maybe it was because whenever i change her diaper, we always guess who will be on the diaper (i always say zoe or ernie and she always says elmo or big bird)!

That is my guess...or it was part of the settlement.

DR JENNIFER....all I know is he brought me the phone results on Thursday morning and they did not tally with the results we saw on air.

I think there is a"go to hell" disclaimer in the credits that says the votes can be manipulated or skewed in various ways.

The reviews for Mr Campbell and Company I've read were reasonably good - if anything disappointed that no risks had been taken - straightforward production.  Mr Sondheim did give "an Evening With: which was televised (I don''t have Pay TV). I doubt Mr Sondheim would have said anything about the show when he had been invited to come out for it - and had just seen it.

I doubt Mr Sondheim would have said anything about the show when he had been invited to come out for it - and had just seen it.

I asked if this brouhaha was over the production with David Campbell:

So angry was composer Stephen Sondheim over Kookaburra's decision to cut vital scenes from Company on Wednesday night that he threatened to pull the plug on the show mid-season by withdrawing the rights.

The Sydney Morning Herald, the newspaper that broke the most dramatic theatre story in years yesterday when it revealed the role of April was completely removed from the show on Wednesday after actor Christie Whelan was too sick to perform, reports today that Sondheim threatened to remove Kookaburra's production rights unless a public apology - on the scale of a full-page newspaper advertisement - was issued.

In a statement to the Herald, Kookaburra Artistic Director and CEO Peter Cousens (pictured) said: "Kookaburra celebrates the work of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth and apologises for interfering with the integrity of their work."

Cousens also dramatically confirmed that he was the one who ordered the cuts to the show on Wednesday, despite what appeared to be a clear denial of this just 24 hours earlier.

"I instructed the director, musical director, cast and crew to make the cuts to the show, and of course it was my decision to keep the curtain up," Cousens said.

Cousens has also announced a charity performance of Company, with profits going to the Actors Benevolent Fund and Oz ShowBiz Cares, a charity nominated by Sondheim. People who attended on Wednesday are invited to the July 31 charity concert or "any other performance of their choosing".

There was no announcement prior to Wednesday's performance in relation to the cuts.

I'm wondering if they charged me double for the office visit.  Anyway, the good news is Boo gained a few ounces so she's up to 7.1 pounds. So, she's ok.  Callie is up to 9.4 pounds. Kookaburra's Show was indeed the Campbell show DR Elmore. First I've heard of the problems but then Melbourne is rarely interested in Sydney!

It's Kookaburra's second production - the first was a "dull" Pippin.

I'm not even a fan of Peter Cousins as a Singer/Actor but you'd think with his experience in theatre here - (les mis, aspects of love etc) he would know better - then I do make the mistake that Actors etc can think!

I know it's work but I never understood why Warlow and O'Connor let themselves become involved in the tragedy that was "Man Of La Mancha"
Then again Anthony W was involved in producing it. DUMB.

So given your post above - the answer is YES.

Lots of possibilities, but most are booked for the dates DH Richard and I need.  Still haven't had replies from a couple of email inquiries I sent, nor has Shelli from Abode (http://www.abodenyc.com) called me back.  Wonder if DR Elmore's fire escape could sleep 2?

There's a company here that accepts the dead equipment.  maybe there is something like that there.  I'd call a computer store and ask them where you can take it.  I have some really old stuff... I've been keeping it for years just in case i ever get a case where there is evidence I need on an old big floppy disk.   I don't think it will ever happen. I should really get rid of all of that

I will check around on Monday. I like to keep an old floppy drive around for such things.

Funny thing, one of the projects I have done this year had to do with locating old 5-1/2 in floppies in computer books in the stacks.

I am going through items to put up on Ebay and some of those itemsa are wonderful old paperbacks from the 30s, 40s, and 50s. I love, love, love the graphics...but my sinuses hate, hate, hate the mustiness of the books. They plug up my head so bad...so I must part with them.

But before I do....here are some choice covers for your visual delight!

...but she scared the bejesus out of me when I was a kid and first came across her on that show she had with her randy hubby. Maybe that is why I am an atheist today?!

Maybe freeze-drying?  That's what they do to dry books out after a library has a flood.

MBarnum, you may not need to sell your books!  I had the "musty odor" syndrome in old books and old LPs, and my mother, in one of her rare lucid moments (joke, kind of) suggested I put those scented dryer sheets in amongst the pages and inside the LP jackets.  Lo and behold, it worked!  (Sometimes it took two or three, replaced a couple of times, but it eventually always got rid of the smell).

My former partner used to sell Tammy Faye Bakker (as she was then) antique jewelry at the flea market the first of every month. She always made a point of coming to his booth to see what he had. She never haggled about money, and always had two of three bodyguards around her as she walked through the flea market. (They were riding high at PTL at the time.)

I was not surprised to hear about her death. She had been going downhill for quite a while, and her picture in the newspaper this week after she appeared on Larry King was the stuff of nightmares.

I began the evening's entertainment with DANGEROUS WHEN WET. This has a jaunty score by Johnny Mercer and Arthur Schwartz, much better than the usual scores for Esther Williams musicals, and the cast is fun.
I only got about 45 minutes into it before I turned it off to watch a movie on TV.

I did watch LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE tonight. It was entertaining enough (road trip from hell), but I found the ending very unsatisfying. I wanted more, and it just seemed to run out of story.

The HD broadcast was very good, sharp with excellent color. And that beauty pageant was as frightening as I expected it to be. Nice to see familiar TV faces in supporting roles: Mary Lynn Rajskab from '24,' and Wallace Langham from CSI. Also a surprise to see Gordon Thomson from DYNASTY playing the gay author who stole Steve Carrell's lover away from him.

I went back to DANGEROUS WHEN WET after LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE concluded.

Oh, man, am I angry.  I just read that some little cabaret thing in West Hollywood is doing a tribute evening celebrating the songs of - wait for it - Stephen Schwartz.  And in this evening one Bruce Vilanch is performing.  And what is he performing?  The song I asked him to do in our show, that's what he's performing - No Time At All.  My idea totally (I have all the e-mails, baby) and now I'm sloppy seconds?  The evening reeks of someone who has seen my e-mails about my show, or read this here site.  Coincidence?  I don't think so.  I've written Brucie a note - we'll see how he responds, but I'm sorry, it's just not right.

Greetings from Louisville!

Today we had a big family/friends gathering, which involved LOTS of good food. Most of it smothered in cream of ______________ soup, cheese, mayonnaise...well, you get the picture. It was ALL tasty. Here's what we had:

Honey baked ham, fried chicken (not the homemade stuff from last night), Kentucky hot browns, barbequed meatballs, broccoli casserole, potato casserole, potato salad, green beans, sweet corn, baked beans, broccoli salad, macaroni & cheese...God, it's making me sick just to think about how much food I ate.

And then there were the desserts: Chocolate sheet cake with chocolate icing (I made that...from scratch, even!), angel food cake, fruit pizza, fresh fruit with marshmallow dip and, finally, oatmeal raisin cookies.

OY!!

I did swim a little today, so I burned off a few calories, but nowhere near enough to burn off that meal. Wow! Now, that's what Christmas and Thanksgiving is usually like with all those people (I think we had nearly 50 guests). I got to see aunts, uncles, cousins and friends that I haven't seen in many years...it was really great.

And I reconnected with another of my gay cousins - Todd - who says he visits NYC at least once a year, so I gave him my info and told him to call me when he comes to town. He's technically my second cousin, but he's only 10 years older than me. He used to be a model. He still looks fantastic, which makes me sort of sick...he still looks like he's in his late 20's. His sister and brother are also gay, though I don't think any of them are officially "out" to the family.

Dunno how I got off on that tangent, but there you have it...a summary of my day. And now I'm going to go pop from all the food...

DR Noel - I know exactly what you mean.  Being behind the table - or behind the piano, in my case - at auditions can indeed be very "heart-breaking" at times.  Especially when friends come into the room, and even moreso when someone you've seen before comes into the room, has a killer audition, but is just not right for the project.  Again.  And again.  And again.

I do not envy the Actor's Life at all, but I do admire their fortitude and perseverance.

And between shows today, I went ahead and caught the 5:00 showing of "Hairspray" at the AMC Times Square.  Auditorium 19 (out of 25) was packed - sold out - and, for the most part, it was a very attentive and well-behaved audience.

I liked the movie, and the changes they made to the plot (from the original movie and the stage musical) didn't bother me as much as I thought they would.  The final sequence had me smiling and smiling and smiling.  I also didn't miss the cut songs.  Although, after listening to the soundtrack, I was surprised by some of the truncations.  Conversely, I also wish they had included some of the longer intros and outros that are in the movie, but not on the soundtrack.

Nikki Blonsky is a wonderful Tracy Turnblad, and she is supported by a great cast.  -Even though with the "Hollywood billing", all the adults are given top billing.  I do have to say, I was a bit disappointed with John Travolta's turn as Edna, but I think that had more to do with the way the part was written for the movie.  -I also missed an Edna with a "basso-brillo profundo" voice.

Even the final credits are well done.  However, they're not the type that you have to stay in the theatre for - the punk-ish version of "Cooties" wears out its welcome after the first verse.  But it is fun listening to Ricki Lake, Marissa Jaret-Winokur and Nikki Blonksy since "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now".  *And I'm wondering if they just recorded those vocals over the original Broadway tracks.

Oh man! 100 bars? Are they $1.75 per bar, as they are here?

Cherry Ripe Ice-cream is better! Same ingredients in the icecream with a rich chocolate coating.  Some of our other confectionaries have been licensed for ice-cream varieties in the same way. "Crunchie" ice-cream is great also.
