Title: A STRANGE UNDERCURRENT OF WEIRDNESS
Post by: bk on April 24, 2006, 12:17:19 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a strange undercurrent of weirdness, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they, too, are feeling a strange undercurrent of weirdness and also anger - they're trying to have some anger moonagement.

And the word of the day is: LENTICULAR!

The Cylons in the original "Battlestar Galactica" series had lenticular eyes.  When the series was first released on DVD (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005JM3C/qid=1145863609/sr=1-6/ref=sr_1_6/102-4779504-7364131?s=dvd&v=glance&n=130), it was put in "Collectible 'Cylon Head' Packaging Featuring a Lenticular Red Eye."  The library where I work bought copies of this and since we can't circulate that kind of specialty packaging, we don't (now you can buy the set without the "Cylon Head").  Anyway, I kept one of the heads for myself and actually bought the DVD series from England (also, without the "Cylon Head" packaging) because it was a lot cheaper than any new U.S. copy that I could find...and I have a region-code-free DVD player, so I could actually play it.  And the British set fit perfectly in the "Cylon Head." :)

Good morning, all!  My father is fine.  I spoke to him last night, and he appears determined to do the opposite of anything my brothers and I want.  I'm am mainly worried in that I think he's being far too active for a man who had major surgery only a week ago, but I refuse to babysit from a distance of 500 miles.  I'll kick his ass in two weeks.  He did mention an appointment with his doctor on April 28, so we'll see how that goes.

I'm off to Toyland this morning after a very long and profitable day there yesterday.  I'm trying to find a nice way in my acknowledgements for the edition to say something neither snide nor double entendre about an egocentric pompous ass who is an insult to research and scholarship.  It ain't easy.

My favorite Motown is the OBC recording of PIPPIN

TOD:

I grew up with two older sisters and they were Supremes fans in the supreme.  They had every 45 (and later, LPs).  I also grew to love their sound.  Favorites?  At the top of me head I'm hearing:

I Hear A Symphony
Where Did Our Love Go?
Stop In The Name Of Love
Love Child
You Keep Me Hanging On

Plus a little know B-side song "I'm Going Down For The Third Time"  which I found to be incredibly catchy and sang to myself incessantly.

I guess reviews can sort of trickle in for CD's, as the reviewers get around to them, since this nice review for the LAST STARFIGHTER CD just seems to have appeared on the Washington D.C. Potomac Stages site.  Nice review for Skip and me, but the last paragraph is ESPECIALLY nice for BK, so I hope it's OK that I'm reprinting it here in its entirety:

The Last Starfighter - A New Musical
Original cast recording
Music and lyrics by Skip Kennon
Book by Fred Landau
Based on the screenplay by Jonathan Betuel

Issued 2005
Running time 58 minutes - 16 tracks
Packaged with notes, synopsis and nine photos
Lyrics include some brief strong language

The 1984 movie in which a suave Robert Preston came down from the heavens to entice a computer-game wizard to travel to the stars to save the good guys in an intergalactic war has remained a favorite of sci-fi buffs even as higher-tech special effects extravaganzas have come and gone. Its combination of youthful enthusiasm, irreverence and a certain adolescent charm that even extended to the far-from-adolescent Preston, made it memorable. Fred Landau adapted the movie for a small Off-Off-Broadway type presentation and Skip Kennon who had created the score for the similarly sci-fi musical Time and Again signed on to do both music and lyrics. The result, as captured in this fine recording, is a chipper, charming and tuneful package.

Storyline: A musical version of the movie about a race of aliens who search for a master strategist by distributing a computer space combat game and then tracking down whoever achieved the highest score. Young Alex who lives with his mom in a trailer park breaks all records on the game and is recruited to save the Star League from the evil Zur and the Ko-Dan Armada.

The Storm Theater, an Off-Off-Broadway company, on the third floor of a church parish a block from Times Square, produced the show in October 2004. This recording, based on that production, boasts the original cast backed by a highly synthesized sounding support which, given the computer-game component of the story, seems just right for the piece. The booklet includes an interesting mini-essay by Landau (at least it appears to be by Landau - it doesn't actually have a byline) and a fine synopsis that allows you to understand the function of each song in the show. There are enough photos to give you a good feeling of what the show looked like in the small space on 46th Street.

The score ranges through a number of varying styles as the different scenes and characters require, but there is a unifying feel to the piece. Kennon's musical vocabulary is wide ranging and solidly grounded in contemporary musical theater. There are parts that sound a bit like early Flaherty and Ahrens, at others there seem to be touches of Alan Menken, Stephen Schwartz or Jeffrey Stock. But they never seem like imitations. On one track, William Parry sounds a bit like the he's singing the introduction to Stephen Sondheim's Assassins when he tackles the song "Things Change," but that shouldn't be surprising since he originated the role of the proprietor in the original production of that show.

While we are at it, here's a big "welcome back" to the album's executive producer, Bruce Kimmel, who has provided so many theater music fans so many great hours of enjoyment. He founded Bay Cities Records which issued a number of theatrical pieces. Then he ran the segment of Verese Sarabande Records dealing with show music. His latest venture was the label dedicated to musical theater, Fynsworth Alley. Through it all, he produced over a hundred show music albums including the invaluable series of Lost In Boston discs of show tunes cut from hit shows before they reached Broadway and Unsung Musicals of songs from shows that didn't make it to the Great White Way. He introduced many fans to some of the best singers of show tunes (including, he might point out with pride, Guy Haines). This release on his new label is good news, not just because its contents is so fresh and welcome but because it is an addition to his latest venture. May he add many, many more.

Monday morning greetings!  Today's title - A Strange Undercurrent of Weirdness - is a perfect description of my workplace.

TOD - Oddly enough, growing up in Motown I was not particularly aware of the music.  In the very early '60's, though, I went to the state fair and saw a "new girl group" that was about to make it big - The Supremes.  My favorite use of Motown music is the soundtrack to one of my favorite movies, The Big Chill.

The first boy friend I ever had was my freshman year in college, and our song was Mary Wells' "My Guy" so it will always have a special place in my heart.

Over the years, I've also gotten very fond of "You Can't Hurry Love" by the Supremes," "ABC" by the Jackson Five, "Heat Wave" by Martha and the Vandellas, "My Girl" by the Temptations, "Baby, I Need Your Lovin'" and "I Can't Help Myself" by the FOur Tops.

For those who don't know, COLD CASE is a police procedural where the cold case squad solves crimes that were abandoned by the original investigators many years ago. The producers of the show always use period music to establish setting and atmosphere.

Last night's show featured a murder of a child that happened in 1965, and several Motown songs were featured on the soundtrack last night including "My Girl."

Tonight comes the last two hours of ELIZABETH I with the final hour conflicting with '24.' Since I have already invested about 18 hours into '24's involved and riveting plot, I'll have to record ELIZABETH I and watch it tomorrow.

And that works out OK since I'm going to have houseguests in mid-May who don't get HBO and who have already asked me to record the four hour broadcast so they can watch it while here.

Penny and Matt - Thanks.  It's been especially nice to be a small part of Bruce's sort-of "re-emergence" as a name in theater recordings.  With some people in the business, I can be talking about the recording, and the person will be nodding and listening; but then when we mention it's on Bruce Kimmel's new label, you can see the enthusiasm in their eyes as if to say if Bruce Kimmel thought it was worth his time and energy, maybe it's worth theirs as well.

I'm still catching up on posts, so I'm not sure if anyone else mentioned last night's DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES recap show.

I actually really enjoyed it.  They split the show into sections featuring each of the women. And they basically summarized everything that had happened.  But they had wonderful and insightful voiceovers by Mary-Alice.  It really added a lot and sort of changed up some of the story.

And even though we'd actually seen everything before, it almost seemed as if it was new.

Hello.  I woke up yesterday morning , ran down to the basement laundry room only to discover that during the night someone had installed a indoor pool in the basement.  Unfortunately said someone did not first take the precaution of removing all my belongings from the said basement.

Several industrial sized hefty bags of sodden garbage (previously treasured keepsakes)  and several hours later I blame MattH.

I personally tire of these endless "recap" shows that ABC is fond of putting together to cover the reality that they don't order enough new shows to fill a season.

That said, I chose not to watch TV programming last night at all, but instead put on my Fox noir "Fallen Angel."

I have extremely mixed feelings about this film.  On the one hand, it's atmospheric as all get-out, has a terrifically propulsive little score by David Raksin and an interesting song written by Raksin but heard only in part throughout the movie as it's Linda Darnell's favorite jukebox selection.

This was Alice Faye's last film (until "State Fair " in 1962).  She's beautiful and more than capable of handling a dramatic non-singing role.  I'd love to have seen her work with Cukor or Mankiewicz or Ford.

This isn't a "Laura"-type film by any stretch of the imagination, despite Preminger directing it, Dana Andrews starring in it and David Raksin scoring it.

The cast is pretty good, the story moves along briskly, and the differences between the disreputable and respectable blur, bend and merge as the film progresses.  Charles Bickford is terrific as the mysterious, somewhat brutal Judd who seems free to play "cop" with anyone he pleases.

I'd love to praise the cinematography, but the fact is that Fox either didn't bother restoring the film for DVD or did the best it could from existing elements.  It's a patchwork quilt that has a few moments of high quality video, some that look a bit off-tone and there are a few breaks in the flow of the film.

I've know about this film for as long as I've loved movies and fell in love with Alice Faye (about 40 years), but it's the first time I've seen it.

I guess I've just been going through sundried CD reviews today, and I just found this review of one of the most recent Kritzerland releases at www.broadwaysbiggesthits.com on their CD review page.

Once again, congrats to BK!

"CHARLES STROUSE/ARTHUR SCHWARTZ/STEPHEN SCHWARTZ"
16TH Annual S.T.A.G.E. Cast
Kritzerland (KR 20010-6)

The annual Los Angeles S.T.A.G.E. concert features the best talent in a loving tribute to a great Broadway composer. The 16th annual concert takes on a bit bigger tribute by combining the best songs of three composers whose last names all start with S. Charles Strouse's shows are combined with Arthur Schwartz and Stephen Schwartz. There are nice songs representing each composer and some of the numbers combine tunes of more than one of these prolific composers. Strouse represents the Golden Age of musical comedy, while Arthur Schwartz goes a bit farther back, and Stephen Schwartz is the most contemporary of the group. Each composer's biggest shows are represented and there is a nice turn by Bonnie Franklin recreating her original performance of "Applause." This annual concert is always a delightful listen and the latest is no exception.

RLP's picture reminds me.  My SIL & BIL in Canada went home one day last summer to discover fifty  pink plastic flamingos on their front lawn along with a sign that said "You've been flocked!"  Apparently it was a fundraiser for a local youth group.  You paid them $30  to set these up on someone's lawn.  They would then come back and collect the flock within 24 hours and usually another $30 as the receiver of the flocking would usually retaliate or "flock" someone else.

Apparently it was quite successful and the youth group raised over $3000.00 over the summer

You didn't build that weather dam high enough!

It is still cold and miserable her and promises to remain that way until at least Wednesday

Actually, I did see a news special on what to expect during pandemic of bird flu.

It IS depressing...especially since everyone is going to be exposed to it in some way or other...and "only the strong will survive" according to best medical guesses.

But...bottom line for now is that if it happens, it happens.   No one is prepared properly...no vaccines are out there...no one knows how to prepare a vaccine because no one knows what to expect from the mutated virus until it begins to affect the human population.

Be aware it will spread through the air, through touch, through sneezing, coughing, etc., etc.

DR Matt--did you get the issue of Entertainment Weekly a few weeks back that had the somewhat detailed photo of the map that Locke saw on the wall in the hatch?  Lots of interesting information there.  I think the photo is still viewable on the EW website.

I did get it, and I tore out the picture thinking I might want to refer to it later as more things become clear. Fascinating "graffiti" that we're sure to see many more times.

Enjoyed THE SOPRANOS from last night, even if Christopher's Hollywood sojourn wasn't especially fascinating (and isn't it kind of dangerous for David Chase to be delving into the expensive swag that celebrities get when many of his actors most assuredly get these gift baskets and other perqs being connected to one of the most famous TV shows on the planet.)

I found the Artie storyline very entertaining though a couple of friends found the entire show boring last night. I didn't at all.

I caught a glimpse of the previews for next week's show and was sad to see Vito back. I was hoping they'd just him live his gay life in New Hampshire and be left alone. [sigh]

Penny -   Skip and I are working together on two projects, one a computer-based musical thriller currently titled TANGLED WEBS (sort of a Swimfan meets musical theater meets the computer world, and a wonderful lyricist named Ellen Schwartz is writing the lyrics for that one), and the other is a concept musical where we're still fleshing out the concept, but we think it's gonna be fun with a little depth to it, but mostly fun.

And I'm still working on a project I started at BMI called THE OCTAGON CIRCLE SHOW, about a feminist insurrection against a fictitious university's traditionally all-male Hasty Pudding-like Show when that all-male show gets picked up by commercial producers.  I had stopped working on it for a while, but now it seems that self-referential musicals are very much "in" - so I started working on it in earnest again.

It was strange today at work.  Strange with lots of cranky customers.

The strangest was a woman who had a large cartfull of groceries, but first shoved a container from the "hot bar" (pre-cooked deli items) and insisted "Ring this up first - I'm hungry!"  She then proceeded to shovel her mac and cheese into her mouth right there at the register while her husband unloaded the cart and I rang up her bill.  I've never had a customer do that before!   :P

Evening all!

My heart goes out to you, Vixmom as I know the pain of losing one’s treasures to the dreaded water.  I lost tons of old photos when I stupidly put them into a basket that I always meant to scan onto the computer.

The water heater burst and had the whole room in a flood which included my precious memories.  Sigh.

DR Tomovoz, Please give my best to dear OzDerick’s sister.

I  think that you are safe from that huge storm but I still send vibes your way to remain so.

I didn’t know about TCB’s pending surgery. Be well and come through yours as good as I came thorough mine!

Congrats to BK, Skip and FJL!   Keep up the great work!

I may have done something silly as I know there is a very small chance I can make it to NY this fall but I couldn’t help myself.  I was playing around on some of the travel sites and saw that some hotels are already completely booked up for the time when Jane, Ginny and Cillaliz are going to be in town.  Sooooo I went to the Comfort Inn web site and made a reservation.  I just thought that if things do work out I will have a room.  If not, I’ll cancel the week before and no harm done.

I bought one of my favorite British comedy series called “Chef!” from DeepDiscountDVD.  When I get time, I’m going to really enjoy watching it.

How are the gas prices your way?  The most expensive I’ve seen so far is $3.15 for premium.  Thank goodness I have the bus and that we live so close to the grocery store, bank, post office and drug store.

I’ve heard that some people are hocking their jewelry and other valuables just to make ends meet to be able to drive to work!

Surgery Report, Part 1

***********

Queasy Alert:  If not a CSI / NCIS viewer (or an ambulance chaser) the following may contain too much information!

***********

Last Thursday, I saw the orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Wyman.  After taking x-rays and doing and exam on my hip we sat down together and discussed the situation.  The hip definitely needs to be replaced and the sooner the better.  Rather than replacing the entire artificial hip, the doctor believes that it is possible to replace the lower ball joint portion, and maintain the current cup, and just replace the worn-out plastic liner.  If that proves not to be true, and the cup needs to be removed, it will require them to "chisel out" the cup from the attached bone.

Either way they end up going, Dr. Wyman feels the surgery is more serious and involves more complications than an initial hip replacement.  Since the plastic liner in the cup has, over time, been worn away by movement; small pieces of debris have filtered down around the artificial hip causing the loss of some muscle around it, as well as loss of bone density.  In addition, the turning movement of the lower ball joint has worn away a great deal of the side of the bone, and will, if left unattended, shatter the femur.  Also, the bone has grown a new piece of bone across the center of the femur, which will need to be drilled through in order to replace the ball joint.  If not done correctly, this could also cause the femur to shatter.

Because of these additional risks and complications, Dr. Wyman believes I should see a different orthopedic surgeon, a Dr. Arthur Ozolin, who is considered the best of his kind around.  Dr. Ozolin has a great deal more experience with these "hip revisions" and knows all of the complications involved.  Although Dr. Wyman said he would be willing to do the surgery if that is what I decide; but he felt that Dr. Ozolin might be a better way to go.

Dr. Wyman did tell me that with this surgery, I can expect a four to six day hospital stay, possibly a week in rehab, and then six to eight weeks of recovery.  Dr. Wyman also said that although Dr. Ozolin might have a different time table, the surgery would probably be scheduled to be done in four to six weeks.

Surgery Report, Part Two (not as graphic)

Today, I saw Dr. Ozolin.  He took a new series of x-rays and we discussed the case.  This doctor also thinks that it is possible to replace just the lower half of the artificial hip, but he says that he will need to be prepared, at the time of the surgery, to do it either way.  The doctor says that to be prepared, he will have to order the file from the previous replacement so that he can have all of the replacement parts available.

Fortunately, a lot of the pre-op stuff that the other surgeon wanted done can be bypassed by this surgeon.  For example, donating my own blood for the surgery extends the pre-surgery time out an additional two to three weeks while I donate the blood.  This surgeon uses a procedure that can recycle a lot of my own blood (I didn’t ask), so we can eliminate the need for me to donate, and therefore that waiting period.  So, we should be ready for the surgery in about four weeks, or approximately June 1.

Although this new surgeon is not the good-looking hottie the previous surgeon was, I won’t be dating either one, so I guess I will go with the best.  The doctor’s nurse will call me on Wednesday or Thursday to schedule the exact date and to pick the hospital.

Okay, that is it, I guess.

There will be a quiz later!

BK, are we going to have any kind of special Broadway Opening Night party here at HHW tomorrow?  Perhaps we could even get Jose to post from the theater prior to the show!!!

My Dell has died.  It started with the last Windows update, which was, apparently, corrupt and incompatible if you had any printer software from Hewlitt-Packard, which I did, as that was the printer I used to use with the Dell.  It corrupted everything on the computer, basically - couldn't open IE, and couldn't open any other program including Word.  Had I called Microsoft first, I might have been able to save things.  But I was foolish and called Dell, and spent three hours online with some idiot who instead of telling me to call Microsoft, attempted to fix the problem by getting me to reinstall Windows from the CD.  We attempted to do it, and in so doing it removed this block that my computer guy had put on a bad sector of the hard drive, and in so doing caused the hard drive to die a quick and immediate death.

I did watch the end of a MURDER SHE WROTE episode I had never seen that featured Cliff Gorman and George Hearn. Wish I had seen the whole thing, but I'm sure it will turn up in one of the boxed sets in the years to come. Looked like it was an episode from around season 7.

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER didn't make me laugh much tonight, and Neil Patrick Harris' Barney character continues to grow crueler and less appealing to me with each passing week. Allyson Hannigan's real-life husband Alexis Denisof made another guest appearance on the show. There was some moderately funny stuff with him.

MEDIUM - - - - - - - - -

spoiler - - - - - - - - -

Detective Lee Scanlon has been one of my favorite characters for awhile, so this episode that gave us some valuable backstory on him was most welcome. I did guess the identity of the guilty party before it was revealed, but otherwise, I did find it a good (but not great) episode of the show.

My goodness. David O. Selznick had such GREAT plans for Allida Valli to become the next Ingrid Bergman. But though she has some effective moments in THE PARADINE CASE and of course THE THIRD MAN is one of the greatest films ever made, she never registered with anything like the appeal of Ingrid Bergman on the screen.

Re: tonight's MEDIUM.

spoiler.

I agree that the episode was good but not great.

It is interesting to get backstory.  But I sort of think they stretched it a bit too far.  It's interesting that alison had dreams about lee. And it's interesting that he once got addicted to drugs (and that the current case related to him). But to me it felt a bit like LOST.

With MEDIUM you never know what direction the story is going. There are so many dreams that change what is happening.  But sometimes the story just seems more rewarding. ANd some of those end scenes (with lee, alison, and blonde woman) just seemed like filler to me.  And the end before that wasn't as rewarding as most of the shows have been.

But that said, I liked how the dreams fit into the story. ANd i liked the stuff with the daughter. I love the family aspect of the show.

Evening all!

How are the gas prices your way?  The most expensive I’ve seen so far is $3.15 for premium.  Thank goodness I have the bus and that we live so close to the grocery store, bank, post office and drug store.

Today I paid $3.17 for regular... and that was the cheapest Icould find. most places are charging $3.25 - $3.30 for regular... of course that was as of 7 PM tonight by tomorrow monring I am sure it will be higher

Oy!  So many wishes to give out, but I can only remember two:

DRvixmom, I don't think you're ready for the Esther Williams Story yet.

No, I can state for the record that when I emerged from the water I was neither beautifully made up nor smiling.  I fear I may have also asked the Lord to curse my basement and the water and the rain with eternal damnation and suggested a suitable eternal residence for same.  then I brought out the wet dry vacuum (the 50 gallon one) filled that up and pumped it out a few times then turned on the dehumidifier after making "dams" from rolled up towels and headed off to teach Sunday School.

The waters are completely gone now, several portions of my basement are looking less cluttered.  The dehumidifier is still getting a workout.  Thank you all for the vibes!!

My basement troubles are quite mundane however when I consider the issues many of my dear HHW friends here are dealing with so I shall try to keep my moaning and dripping (oh dear that really was an unintentional pun) to a minimum... ok its too late for that, I'll try not to exceed the recommended daily allowance then..... and please know that you are all,  especially you Danise and Mom, TCB, OZDerek's dear friends and family, Elmore's dad and Maria's Dear Daughter in my thoughts and prayers
