Well, you've read the notes, the notes were written and posted without AOL, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're still trying to get on the Internet via AOL.

VHS era is winding down
The last big supplier of the tapes is ditching the format, ending the long fade-out of a product that ushered in the home theater.

By Geoff Boucher
December 22, 2008

Pop culture is finally hitting the eject button on the VHS tape, the once ubiquitous home video format that will finish this month as a creaky ghost of Christmas past.

After three decades of steady if unspectacular service, the spinning wheels of the home entertainment stalwart are slowing to a halt at retail outlets. On a crisp Friday morning in October, the final truckload of VHS tapes rolled out of a Palm Harbor, Fla., warehouse run by Ryan J. Kugler, the last major supplier of the tapes.

"It's dead, this is it, this is the last Christmas, without a doubt," said Kugler, 34, a Burbank businessman. "I was the last one buying VHS and the last one selling it, and I'm done. Anything left in warehouse we'll just give away or throw away."

With some things, though, even Kugler the great salvager can't find a buyer no matter how low he goes. He took a loss on 50,000 copies of "Yo-Yo Man," a Smothers Brothers instructional video for the stringed toy. ("I'm not sure what I was thinking on that one," Kugler said.) And then there is that stash of VHS tapes that couldn't even earn a spot on the last shipment out of his warehouse: a few thousand copies of "The Man With the Screaming Brain," a 2005 horror movie about a mad scientist, a Bulgarian tycoon, a cab driver and some cranial misadventures. ("That one," Kugler said, "will be buried with us.")

The majority of his firm's business today is with big box retailers including Target, Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Sears, where the company sets up displays of its discounted DVDs, such as "Superman Returns" and "Proof of Life," which are often priced at $10 or less. Plenty of customers see that price as an invitation to build up their DVD collections.

But Kugler, with a sly smile, offered a warning to consumers thinking of putting up shelving to handle their burgeoning libraries.

"The DVD will be obsolete in three or four years, no doubt about it. Everything will be Blu-ray," Kugler said, anticipating the next resident at his pop culture retirement home. "The days of the DVD are numbered. And that is good news for me."

DR George wrote this last night in response to my question about the tv stations going digital:
Quote
Jennifer, essentially if you have cable, satellite or Dish TV, then it won't affect you at all.  It will only affect you if you get your TV only from an antenna
.

Okay i thought it had to do with what kind of tv you had, not if you simply had cable.

I don't have an antenna. But the tv in my bedroom is older.  And i do have digital service. But there are some channels that i don't get on digital that i watch through my VCR on cable. But i have no cable box. That is what was confusing me.

I agree that sometimes traffic laws do not always make sense.

Here we have no fault. But once my mom was driving (it was a 3 way stop). She stopped and was turning left. Another car was going straight. But came to the stop sign and went right through it. My mom had stopped and was there before the other car.

Well guess what, my mom was deemed at fault because the person going straight has the right of way. Well no sane person would assume that that person would fail to stop at their stop sign and plow into my mom's car.

That's illogical.  So the same theory could apply to BK's case. Like DR cillaliz said, it's possible that the person turning left (BK) is always responsible even if the other person does something so stupid.

However i agree that something should be done. People who drive unsafely should not be rewarded. And i think it's a good thing to make these people think about it even if ultimately they probably won't lose in court.

Good morning, all! I am officially sick so keep them vibes coming! Last night I went to bed around 6:30, with chills, runny nose, horrible sinus pains, and general discomfort. I slept fitfully, got up around 8, showered, ate, and now I doubt I'll wander far from Randy's sofa or my bed.

I hate this!

We also have Chanukah cookies to make (new cookie cutters). But we ran out of time. And my niece is going out of town. So i'm not sure if we will make them this wed. Or maybe if she comes back on sunday. Or she won't know the difference if we make them a few days late!

They spent a week studying Chaukah at her daycare. So half the kids think they are Jewish.  My niece came up to me the other day and declared "auntie you're jewish and me i'm half jewish". So cute!

Electricity went out about 4:30 pm here yesterday. My mom had called to tell me she was in the dark, and then about 15 minutes later mine went out.

I braved the snow and ice and drove over to the old folks home and picked up mom and we went to IHOPS (as they still had electricity). When I drove mom back home her lights were back on.

Upon my arrival to my home my electricity was still off. I grabbed the flashlight, crawled into bed, read a bit, and then went to sleep around 8:30.

Now all is back to normal.

My aunt emailed a recipe for meatballs she wants me to make for Xmas eve. So i printed it last night. aND now today she's changed to a different recipe!

The only good part is that they are very similar (on allrecipes.com). The first one was waikiki meatballs and now it's lana's sweet and sour meatballs>

The other good part is the only ingredient that is different is one i was not at all thrilled about. The first one had saltine crackers. This one has bread crumbs!

The only two films I can remember seeing on the big screen this year have been Indiana Jones and the Crystal Anti-Aging Cream Jar (*yawn*) and Wall*E (there is hope for us yet!).

Der Brucer is sure to claim that I saw a lot more films this year, but he saw a bunch of 'em with the grandlads and I did not go, either because I was working or because I was worn out from working (or because I was sick and tired of the self-centeredness of the older grandlad, which is extreme).

The Days of DVD are numbered?

I doubt that.

At the very least it will co-exist alongside of Blu-Ray.

If the studios are stupid enough to stop supporting DVD, they are liable to find the biggest public revolt since the Boston Tea Party.

People are tired of having to constantly upgrade their perfectly good copies of STAR WARS, THE GODFATHER, CASABLANCA and all the other 1000s of catalog titles.

The only one (that I remember) that I didn't like was:

I have close to twelve inches of snow at my house (hmm, how can I measure that?) and the sky is threatening to dump some more at any time.  I called and left a message for my boss that I would be (at least) late this morning.  It is absolutely beautiful here this morning.  It looks like a Currier & Ives painting outside.

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN

WALL-E

If I were you, I wouldn't try.  It's treacherous out there.  The only way to get out would be to go down the alley, I think, and you might easily get stuck.

I've had very few, if any, problems with AOL.  We signed up for MSN, part of a Qwest bundle, about 10 seconds before AOL went fee-free.  MSN has problems now and then.  The weird thing it's been doing lately is, after you read a new email, it then comes back as new again until you read it a second time.  Guess it's just making sure, LOL.

Crap! Somedays my unfamiliarity with a PCdrives me mad.

More to follow.

I agree with DR Druxy.  DVD is it for me.  All technology must stop until after I'm dead.  I'm tired of constantly upgrading...When I moved, I had a garage with a turntable that still played 78 records, old VCRs, radios, computers.  Enough is enough.  When DVDs go, Blu-ray (which I ain't getting into) will go too...then everything will be downloaded off a computer.

DR Laura, I was once banned from AOL because I used CoastDa's real name of Josh Marquis when he was being an idiot on one of the boards during the OJ Trial (the first one).   I just used a different credit card and was back on in an hour.

I started on AOL in about 1992, it was before the World Wide Web.   I also had to connect via long distance so it got to be quite expensive.  I quit a couple times - that was like pulling teeth, had to make phone calls all sorts of crap.  I went back a couple times, I can't remember why, and haven't been back in years.

The thought went through my mind that a free account may be worth it, but do I really need another email address?

There are so many better alternatives for free e-mail addresses, the best of which is gmail.  I ONLY kept the AOL addresses because I was worried about losing e-mails.  I'm about to switch the Kritzerland address to gmail at some point soon, and I already have a haineshisway gmail account, and I'm also opened two other gmails with my other AOL names.

Thank you all for the vibes. I'm actually feeling a bit better although I keep sneezing and my nose still runs like mad. Jo's made a huge pot of potato soup that smells fantastic and I do look forward to lunch.

Randy's home from work since there was little to do and it's too damned cold, and he's caught up in MANHUNT, the book about the search for John Wilkes Booth. His next book is a history of the Andersonville prison.

Jo's waiting for my niece Corby, Jayden's mother, to bring Riley over for her to watch while Corby takes Jayden, our own Tiny Tim, to Dayton for his doctor's appointment; as a premie, his health has been precarious since his birth, and his lymph nodes are currrently swollen. My biggest concern is that whatever I am currently suffering from does not get passed on to him since we played all day Saturday.

Well, here is the shocking aftermath of the bailout program and in one little article you will understand how ridiculous it was for everyone to bow to the pressure to approve spending taxpayer's money to a group of people who caused the problem in the first place.  If this doesn't nauseate you nothing will.  It's sadly typical and how could anyone not have seen it coming.  I think the government under its new leadership needs to have these banks show accountability, and the ones who used this money for anything other than helping the economic problem should have to return every cent of what was misspent.  Who didn't know this would happen?  I'm sorry, but Mr. Bush is going to go down as the worst President in the history of this country - and that's saying something.

We only had 15 cms of snow here yesterday (6 inches). The good part about living in the suburbs here at least is that the next day everything is back to normal.

Living in the city they don't plow the streets where people park their cars. and it can take a week for it not to look like  a complete wreck.

>>I'm sorry, but Mr. Bush is going to go down as the worst President in the history of this country - and that's saying something.

Let us not forget that it was Barney Franks and the Democrats who demanded this bailout, not to mention the failed stimulus plan of a few months ago, happen, and that Bush simply caved in to their pressure.

Let's not forget that Obama has the guy responsible for the Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae debacles as a financial advisor! (And that 2  years ago Bush tried to get more oversight for those 2 companies and it was the Democrats who blocked that attempt, with Barney Franks himself saying both entities were working just fine.

Wonder what woudl happen if the American taxpayers, in aggregate, got together and refused to pay their taxes on April 15. If the entire population said, "Go ask the banks and get *our*  money from them," they couldn't all be arrested!

3D's been drinking that ol' Fox News Kool-Aid again.  :)  It was Henry Paulson who demanded the bailout and went to congress to ask for it.

Moving on to other, more pleasant, news:  it's snowing.

BK, I pored over yesterday's notes and didn't see anyone blaming you for anything, just stating the sad facts about the insurance biz.  Betsy got broadsided years ago by a high school kid who ran a red light.  Nonetheless, our insurance company brokered a "shared fault" deal since Betsy had our two (then very young) kids in the car and the other party's insurance company was therefore claiming she was distracted.  Yes, distracted by an idiot running a red light!

I am just about fed up!

I'm back from the store, where once again I had to deal with a very uppity customer.

Not all customers, just a very few.

Why, pray tell, are these customers uppity?

They are getting angry with the cashiers when the cashier uses the word "Holiday" instead of "Christmas" when they say "Have a nice (fill in the blank)".

"I celebrate Christmas!" the customer will bark.  The intention is clear - we are all to celebrate Christmas, and to celebrate it their way, and no other is to be allowed.

"Holiday" is supposed to be inclusive, not only of Christmas and Hannukah, but also of New Years and Thanksgiving and all the other year-end celebrations.  What the heck are these people up to, trying to force exclusiveness upon the rest of us?

The next customer who barks at me that way, I'm just going to look her in the eye and tell her "I'm Jewish."

I think I can be excused a little White Christmas/Hannukah/Kwanza lie in this case.  (Although White Kwanza has an odd sound to it.)

Samuel Bronston's son wrote me several extremely nice emails after I reviewed this, telling me I was one of the few who seemed to "get" what his father was trying to do in the film.  He has a little e-group of people associated with this film and other Bronston productions, including Rozsa's daughter, which he invited me into, but I was uncharacteristically reticent.  :)

Hi everyone.  Today is literally the first day since mid-October that I can log in and say hi and attempt to keep up.

I see the board has a new look, very cool

We are enjoying our house.  We recently had our annual Christmas Cocktail party, which was well attended.  I had a good time decorating inside and out and was sure that we had a red front door, a roaring fire and a Christmas tree.

Everything else is going fine.  Shows have come and go, more are in the future including back to back The King and I's - one at the podium and one at the keyboard (for rehearsals and then I'm DONE!)

I'll do my best to keep up now, I hope everyone has been well :)

"I’m sure you’ve read the headlines about the silliness in our show. Today was the first time I really enjoyed playing this show. I hope you weren’t expecting a big TV star.”

DR JMK - I am waiting for a DVD release of Bronston's John Wayne epic - CIRCUS WORLD....my video is getting awfully old!

It's coming, as is 55 Days at Peking.

I agree with your disgust SWW. I don't understand why some people think the season is for them and them only. What is the harm in wishing "everyone" a happy holiday....which includes all and everyone. Some people like to take the "Merry" out of everything.

And like you are supposed to know which holiday they celebrate.

And I know some people consider it recent "P.C.", but I hear "happy holidays" in a lot of the old movies and TV shows.

The thing we agree on is your final paragraph - that is what should happen.

Well, I missed the last few minutes of THE ROAD TO RUIN (1934) as my DVR did not pick all of it up...however, I am pretty sure that Helen, who went from sweet innocent high school girl to hanging out with boys, then drinking, then smoking, then using Maryjane, then having elicit sex, getting pregnant and having an abortion, and finally running a very high fever...well, I suspect that Helen did not make it to the final credits.

If only the parents had paid heed to the counselors wish for sex education for the students.

I spent most of the afternoon watching (in its entirety finally) P.S. I LOVE YOU. OK, I admit it: I'm a sentimental old fool. This is the kind of romantic comedy-drama I'm a total sucker for, and despite Ms. Hillary Swank (whom I usually only moderately like), I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Has lots of fabulous people in it: Lisa Kudrow, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kathy Bates, Gina Gershon, James Marsters, Dean Winters, and, as the romantic lead, Gerard Butler at his sexiest.

Later today I shall watch my FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE 3-disc set purchased from Oldies.com (but now sold out) for the grand price of $4.98.

Any idea when they're going to release the other 2 Bronson films, 55 DAYS AT PEKING and CIRCUS WORLD?

My problem with ROMAN EMPIRE was that it's too slow.

Back from getting licensed reattached - I had to go to the car dealer's to buy the holder, which they make specially because when I bought my car in 1998 it was not a law that you had to have the front plate on your car and the cars of that era were not designed to have the plate.  That cost seventy bucks (!) and then I had a local station attach it, which took five minutes and cost ten bucks.

Earlier today, while I was checking out Michael Ruhlman's blog for his gift suggestions, he reminded everyone that a thermos is a great way to keep sauces warm when they have to be held for a while.

So, I just asked der B if we have a thermos.  I thought it would be a great way to transport the white sauce for the creamed onions on Christmas.

No, he replied.  But we have a jug he got from the hospital, that has an inner liner and is intended to hold ice.

Uh, no.  Not the same thing.

We'll probably be heading over to K-Mart or WalMart tomorrow to make a quick purchase.

Thanks for the shout outs.  It's good to be back.  The house has been treating us well.  We did have some roof repairs to deal with as well as a visit by Roto-Rooter, but all that is behind us and we are enjoying our place.  I'm now off to my final choir rehearsal before Christmas Eve.  We are doing 3 John Rutter pieces, "Nativity Carol", "Shepherd's Pipe Carol" and "Christmas Lullaby", all of which are sounding great.  We are also doing a piece by Contemporary composer, Tom Conry called "Born of Peace", which is just fantastic.  More later...

So...

I walk into the casting director's office, and the big table that is usually covered in stacks of headshots and resumés is, instead, covered in boxes of chocolates, cakes, cookies, etc.  Christmas/Hannukah/Holiday/Thank-You gifts!  -Of course, I was dropping off a box of cookies of my own making to add to the spread.

What was cool to find out was that since they are closing down the office over the next two weeks, they will be delivering any of the "leftover" goodies to Harvest House, a homeless shelter program.  -And from the looks of some of the packages, it looks like the recipients will be enjoying some pretty haute goodies.

So...

Did you ever make it New York City?

Did you see The 39 Steps?

If you did see the show, were you able to see it from your seat?

Did you feel safe where you were staying?

Did you feel safe in Times Square?

*Btw, the representative from Massachusetts is named, "Barney Frank," not "Barney Franks".  And let's not forget the financial advisors and financial leaders that have been and still are associated with the current administration.  And by saying the President Bush "caved in" to the pressure - which had proponents on both sides of the aisle - well, that doesn't speak well of his leadership either.

And, DR JoseSPiano, I would be looking for this in the frozen section, in...what type of a container?  Do they freeze it in blocks?    ;)

Yes, in blocks - well plastic cartons.  Usually comes in quarts.

I, too, believe Bush, George W., will be considered, possibly, the worst "president" in history...and relatively soon, too.

As for the "bailout", I have to interject that before 1932, when Franklin D. Roosevelt ran for his first term as president, big business was on its own.  There were no "bailouts".  That's why the stock market crash of 1929 ruined so many people, why the depression lasted so many years and why unemployment was at approximatley 33% countrywide.

I do not relish bailing out banks whose management made idiotic decisions any more than I relish bailing out automakers who have resolutely REFUSED to make any progress on energy-efficiency development or alternative fuel vehicles.  I don't know where the finger truly ought to be pointed, but I do know we have never been in as much debt as we are now, we have never had the scorn/disappointment that we've received from our allies, and we have never faced an economic crisis as serious as the one we have now in the "modern era."  Bush did all that with his Republican congress.  All the wheels were in motion before the Democrats came "into" power two years ago.

Shortly after his 1933 inauguration, Roosevelt came to grips with the realities of the depression and set in motion a plan that still exists today -- this plan involves the federal government stepping in to preserve institutions and/or corporations upon which rest the financial viability of these United States.

I don't like that billions we don't have are being offered up to correct "mistakes" the people in charge have made, but the alternative is unthinkable.

As for the stimulus package being a "Democrat" device...IMAGINE IT!  The Democratic party giving money BACK to the taxpayers.  Whatever will they think of next?

I am, obviously, back from my trip to Greenville with my mom, my aunt and my cousin.  Another cousin joined us for lunch while we were there.  We did a bunch of shopping (I did myself proud), and we had some fussing (families and car trips, dontchaknow) and it was cold.  Not as cold as some of you guys have experienced.  Temp got up to F 39 degrees today.  It's supposed to be F 23 tonight.  Over the next two days, the warmup begins gradually.  On Christmas Day, we expect we'll be back in the F 70s.

'Twas cold here in NYC today. The temperature hovered in the 20s with a morning low of 13. I've had worse but for many New Yorkers that is cold.

We went to see the tree in Rock Center this afternoon. It's bee-yooo-tee-full. When the pictures are taken off the memory card I will post one.

We then ambled (more like walked quickly) over to F.A.O. Schwartz and viewed very expensive toys for well off children.

We then walked over to 6th Avenue and 57th Street and took the F train home to 16th Street.

We spent the rest of the day indoors.  I spoke to my Uncle and my Aunt both of whom reside in Michigan and I will call the brothers and sisters on Thursday (when I am on Long Island).

That's all the news from my neck of the woods.

The problem is not the idea of the bailout, but that the banks are refusing to account for how the billions of dollars they've received is being spent.  I feel their refusal to do should be met with stern action by the government, threats even, because it's not THEIR money, it's the taxpayers' money and no one has any idea of how they're allocating these funds - for all anyone knows, it's going to the executives who CAUSED the problems in the first place.  All these banks have to do is provide information on how they've spent money that was GIVEN to them by the government.  Since they are refusing to do so, I think the government needs to say, "no more refusing - account or return the money immediately.  It's the height of chutzpah and shows that no one should have bailed anyone out without some form of accountability.

Yes, but only because I saw pictures. I was too young in 1957 to stay up to see the pageant back then. You're too young to understand most likely, but the Miss America Pageant was one of the BIG events of the year back in those days. As big as the Super Bowl is now, and I'm not kidding.

And, for your information, Marian McKnight was the first Miss America from South Carolina, so she was a very special lady in our state and was as famous as a local lass could become back in those days.

bk - As for your new mailbox set-up...

1) It's always good to check your "Saved" folder from time to time just to make sure your emails are being saved to/on your computer.  I'm guessing you were walked through setting up a "rule" to automatically save your emails to your computer after reading them - instead of them just being saved on the server. -I usually have to manually drap and drop the emails to my Saved folder.

2) Not that you're "off" of AOL, it's probably easiest to keep your .aol email address instead of eventually "migrating" over to gmail.

3) There is one trick you can utilize to "transfer" some of the contents of your Filing Cabinet over to your (Mac)Mail-box.  You launch AOL, then go into your Filing Cabinet.  Select a block of messages, then select "Keep As New".  They will then appear in your "new" mailbox too. Then just navigate to those messages to save them to your new mailbox - and while you're at it, you go through each message and then select "Add Contact to Address Book".  -Of course, this will only the name and email address, not any other contact info you may have added to the AOL Address Book.

Further tp Jose - You'll know at least Skip and me and Julie who confirmed that she'll be here, so that's at least 3 people and 2 dogs that you'll know.  (At the very most it would be 6-7 people, so not the normal tumult  :) )

Back from Amoeba - didn't get one of the good folks so trade wasn't as much as I'd hoped - still, got some CDs and one DVD.

Jose, I haven't set up the Mail program to automatically save to my folder - how do I do that?  I've been right clicking and manually saving them to the folder.

Umm... It's a little hard to explain, but...

Open Mail

Mail -> Preferences -> Rules -> Add Rule

You'll see a bunch of options and drop-down menus.  -It's probably just easiest to keep right-clicking or dragging them right to your Saved folder, but if you take it one step at a time and logically, it's "easy" to set up.

Since the talk has turned to bailouts and I guess the moratorium on political matters seems over -

I was going to wait until we finalized this latest parody video, which is going to happen after Jose's roommate Jim (whose company created and assembled the visual part of this) gets back from his Christmas trip, but with the discussion it just seems sort-of timely on HHW today in a way it might not be next week.

It runs about 8 or 9 minutes, and Jim recommended (which seems right!) that it's best viewed in the High Quality mode at the bottom right of the youtube screen.

While on the subject of parodies, and since I saw Pal Joey again tonight, here was my response on All That Chat to someone who asked the burning question: What about Jeremy Piven for Pal Joey?

singdaw seemed to like it, so i wanted to share it (and by putting it on HHW, have it permanently on the innernet)

DR JMK, we have done All Things Bright and Beautiful before, and I love For the Beauty of the Earth, I may pull that out this spring.  However, after this evening's rehearsal, we may not be doing anything more than unison singing after the new year.  They tanked on Shepherd's Pipe Carol even after two months of drilling.  I was NOT happy.  Anyhow, I'll need to check out the new Rutter CD.

Topic of the Day...Except for "The Fall" and "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day," these are all the movies that I've seen in theaters (that I can remember).  And I really like most of them:

The Fall (only saw on DVD, but I LOVE!)
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Indiana Jones (not my favorite, by a long shot)
Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3-D
Mamma Mia!
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (only saw on DVD. It's delightful)
Rent: Filmed on Broadway
Wall-E

We are allowed to carry over up to 15 vacation days into the new year.  I will be carrying over 11.

Where I work, we can accrue up to 240 hours (prorated to one's FTP) of vacation time and I'm down to probably 20 hours or so. ::) I'd better start building it up.  If I remember correctly, only once have I ever had more than 100 hours of vacation time, and that was a year and a half ago.

I do have over 1,200 hours of sick leave, though.  And there's NO limit to how many hours of sick leave that we can accrue. ;)

Sounds a bit like "Reefer Madness." ;D

***SAFE TRAVEL VIBES***
for DR George!!!!!

Thanks!  Today was a day filled with driving.  There was one hill that, because of traffic, took a long time, but other than that, the actual driving today was no problem. :)

Boy, I would save up for an electric garage door. I don't remember them being horrifically expensive. $150 maybe? I could be wrong. I had mine installed almost 30 years ago and only had to replace the spring on it once.

I have a garage door opener.  It was already installed when I bough my condo and the only thing that I had to do was to reset the code on the remote.  But then the power outlet where I plug it in crapped out on me and I'm pretty sure that I'll need to get an electrician to fix that. :P However, that's irrelevant right now because my garage is filled with stuff and there is no room in there for my car, even if the outlet did work. :-\
