THE RAT RACE
Music Composed and Conducted by Elmer Bernstein
The Rat Race began life in 1949 as a Broadway play by Garson Kanin. Eleven years later, Paramount Pictures brought The Rat Race to the screen, starring Debbie Reynolds as a down-on-her-luck model and dancer, and Tony Curtis as a new to New York aspiring musician. The great supporting cast included Jack Oakie, Kay Medford, Norman Fell, and a very young Don Rickles. As with the Broadway play, several notable musicians were also in the cast – reprising his Broadway role was Joe Bushkin, and Gerry Mulligan and Sam Butera also appeared. The film was directed by Robert Mulligan (it was his second film, after Fear Strikes Out – also for Paramount), and the screenplay was by Kanin. Curtis and Reynolds deliver star performances – it’s one of Reynolds’ best performances, and the large supporting cast is wonderful (especially Rickles, who is really effective as a sleazeball). The photography of Robert Burks (at that time, Alfred Hitchcock’s regular cameraman) is stunning and Mulligan’s direction is terrific – he would, of course, go on to direct To Kill a Mockingbird just three years later.
As much of a leading character as those played by Curtis and Reynolds is the incredibly dynamic score by Elmer Bernstein. Right from the get-go, his electric, jazzy, and spectacular theme grabs you and never lets go. That theme recurs throughout the score – pulsing with the teeming life of the city, with wailing brass and insistent rhythms. Some cues keep the big-band jazzy feeling, while others are mournful and tender, as the story requires. It is, simply put, one of Bernstein’s best. Nobody did this kind of score better than Elmer Bernstein – it’s just filled with memorable melodies and stunningly gorgeous music. 1960 was a great year for Bernstein, what with The Rat Race and then one of his all-time masterpieces, The Magnificent Seven. The theme from The Rat Race enjoyed some popularity and radio play when it was recorded by cast member Sam Butera and the Witnesses.
This is the world premiere release of The Rat Race original soundtrack recording. There was an LP release of the Sam Butera version of the theme – an album called “Sam Butera and the Witnesses play the Music from The Rat Race,” but it was just the theme; the rest of the album was filled with standards. The original tapes, housed in Paramount’s vaults, were in excellent condition and we present Bernstein’s score in its entirety in stereo. In the bonus section we’ve included some mono source cues (all by Bernstein) and a couple of demos.

I am up way too late. Watched a 1972 Kannada language film that I thought was going to be a snake horror film (or Naag film)...since there was a snake on the front cover and part of the title had the word "naag"....well....alas, it was not a horror film, but a drama.
Still, it was quite good, but no happy ending in this film, that is for sure.

Then I watched a 1990 Hindi fantasy film titled HAATIMTAI, which is based on the Haatim Tai story.
Great fun with lots of fairies, demons, mad magicians, half man/half beasties, etc.

I worked my butt off (not that you can tell) this weekend with fall chores. The only thing I didn't get done was going the roof to sweep it off. I'll do that this coming weekend.
I don't have much news. Nothing on the house. We are going to have another meeting at work today. Not looking forward to it.

Good morning, all! I slept very well and I feel much better than I did yesterday.
The frst thng this morning I shall run to the post office and send out two packages by priority mail. After that, I will return here, shower and dress for today's readthru of the Appalachian piece, "Christmas Up the Holler." The cast is made up from those who did the reading in May 2011 and the Hilton Head performances; I'm really looking forward to seeng everyone ad catching up. Our juvenile lead, Ben, is standing by for Steve Kazee in ONCE, Julie Foldesi is in NEWSIES, and Leenya was in WAR HORSE. David Lutken is doing his Woody Guthrie show out of town, so his role is being played by an actor I don't know.
I really like the new duet fot Julie and Scott Moss, and I think the reading, which could be sloppy since they're getting several rounds of new material in the script and the score thrown at them, but I think our small audience, not expecting a finished performance, will enjoy it and we'll know where we stand on the content. I'm sorry that you can't make it, DR ChasSmith, but this means you'll see a more polished version down the pike.
Tonight, I plan to chill out and do very little. Tomorrow it's back to the ROBERTA grind. I've got a score to finish for the copyists and I have to begin laying out a graph of who's in what numbers for a meeting with the producer.

This is pretty much what I put on castrecl, this is really not a jukebox, thouhg it looks like one when one looks at the song list - it's really a dramatic work that has to be told through this one man's songs.
Strange about "Last dance." I was very very impressed with the book, which i thought was a quirky, five-actor off-Broadway take on a quirky life, celebtating - but not telling and hitting head-in - the life of the man who created the "red ribbon" for AIDS awareness and "It's Raining Men" and "Last dance" and so much else.
I suspect so as not to potentially violate people's privacy they have not done a GYPSY or FUNNY GIRL - so they have told a story built on Jabara's work's spirit, rather than a fiction based on his life - him being affectionately at times called the "court jester" of the Stigwood empire. but because Jabara is not Fanny or Gypsy, they have gone "off-Bway" and quirky in manner of storyteling, and as such it works wonderfully in my opinion, but the intermission confuses, and I think it's there for temporary needs [npot meant to be there in the real show anyway] since the show picks up so clearly and I think taht will amke all the structural difference. The tone shift between acts will feel like a gorgeous development.

DR FJL - I still remember playing auditions for a workshop of Last Dance years ago. It may have been one of my first gigs when I moved up to NYC. I knew Phil from SETC since he used to do a lot of directing for some regional dinner theatres and such before he moved on full-time to the circus. In any case... I remember having a blast playing and listening to all those disco songs from my youth(!). ;)

Just got a phone call from my cardiologist's office--I passed the stress test I had on Friday morning.
Actually, I found nothing stressful about this stress test. They used to make you really put the pedal to the metal on the treadmill to get your heart rate up, but now they administer a drug which artificially stimulates your heart and all you do is a slow mosey stroll. It was sort of disappointing. But in any event, I'm happy that my heart is doing fine.

Monday afternoon greetings from the Genealogy Center at Allen County Public Library in beautiful downtown Fort Wayne, Indiana! My drive up here was smooth and I met up with my sister at 1pm. We had a bite of lunch in the library cafe and I did a little grants research for the Middletown Area Senior Center. Nancy is still working on family history stuff, so I'm getting caught up on this 'n' that.

Congratulations on passing. I guess the test is more accurate for people who move well. I would find it difficult to go that slow. Even today when I couldn't jog on the treadmill I couldn't go slow. It even hurt more going slow.

Got another ninety minutes of sleep, printed orders, had a meeting with the camera people, had a visit with Sharon McNight and gave her her material, had a quick sandwich and sweet potato fries, picked up two small packages, printed out orders, and then spent an hour doing a detailed schedule for the shoots on Thursday and Friday. And now Juliana should be here in ten minutes and I can only do ninety minutes with her, then get ready for tonight, then have a meeting with the production assistant for Friday's shoot. Then it's Titanic, which I've just heard is THREE HOURS LONG. Now I don't even want to go.

Beautiful day here today with mild temperatures and the leaves are changing. Due to the drought the colors are not as vivid as other years but still pretty.

I did watch John Jakes' North and South books one and two this past weekend. Patrick Swayze was dashing. I forgot that Elizabeth Taylor was in this one.
The score was good but it does not compare to the Centennial score. I thought some of the period songs used by the troops was played in the time meter. It is possible that there is more than one interpretation of the song and I am only used to one interpretation.

There is a series in Britain called North and South based on the Elizabeth Gaskill book. I wish I knew who the composer was that program. It was beautiful and haunting.

Yeston's TITANIC really grew on me and I berate myself for missing it on Broadway. I did see one poor quality bootleg and thought, unlike many, that the production was stunning.
But the score is the big draw for me, and it now occurs to me to ask: Did anyone here go to that concert performance on the Upper West Side a couple of years back? I was there, and oh my goodness was that ever an interesting evening........ 8)
So I hope BK hears it with a full-sized well-rehearsed orchestra, in good acoustics, and of course with with a good cast! Looking forward to the notes.

I am home from the reading. It was under-rehearsed, but there were wonderful moments; the new duet is quite lovely and a great addition to the score. The cast unfortunately had forgotten a lot of their material and their vocal parts, so it got shaky at times. Still, it was nevera complete mess, and it was great to see everyone and catch up on their past eleven months. Our MD Brent forgot a section of the gospel number and went up a pitch an entire verse early. When he got to the spot where it should have gone up a step, he asked me, should I take it up, and I said. no; it will be too high for her. Still, our small audience had a great time, and I think the piece is better for the additions. My friend Ben, who's standing by for Steve Kazee in ONCE, is going on all next week so I want to get a ticket and catch his performance.
DR ChasSmith, I know there will be a production and you will be able to attend a more polished rehearsal.
So, I will have some dinner and chill out. Tomorrow morning, I have a visit with my barber and then I am back to work on ROBERTA.

I don't know what I have that is causing me to hurt. It seems to originate lower than my lower back. It moves so I'm never sure. Sometimes I think it is in my hips. There aren't any sore muscles to find the trigger points.

Working out at the gym seemed to help. I reduced all the weights & tension levels and did everything for the usual amount of time. After I was done I could walk & move more easily. Sitting at the computer makes it worse.

I hope not and the pain is on both sides. I noticed at 2:30 in the morning the left side was feeling better. Lying down is the most comfortable position. Walking is definitely easier since using the treadmill today.

The first - and last - time I saw Maury Yeston's TITANIC I detested it. Still do. There's good stuff in the score and some of the cast, but i think the show's book and original production are awful.

My two top pics are LAST RESORT & ARROW. We'll watch ELEMENTARY because it is Sherlock Holmes. We like Dennis Quaid so we will probably check out VEGAS, plus it takes place in the 60's.

We watched the first episode of THE NEW NORMAL after my Bernese Mountain Dog friend's on FB said to watch it. There is an adult Berner & a puppy making the show for us. The second episode had a brief visit by the dogs and the 3rd episode only had a photograph of the older dog. Without the dogs we are not sure we will continue to watch this.

Funny, I thought the concept of people playing instruments for Company worked much better than in Sweeney Todd I'm always in awe at the fact that these people can act, play an instrument, sing, dance, etc. While we love to criticize the production/concept, we can't say anything negative about the performances, which are stellar.
I love the score for Titanic, hated the National Tour. I'm hoping to do the show some year...

Thanks. I was very careful today & concerned if it would make it worse. I was relieved it made it better. I paid very close attention to my body while I was working out. When I attempted to jog I could tell I needed to stop immediately.

Since I don't have insurance I will have to check and see of Walgreens or CVS offer shots at a reasonable price. If not, I will take my chances. I did not have a flu shot last year either.

My flights down to SFO were full, but relatively quiet. The Portland airport was surprisingly busy for a Monday morning, even the TSA screeners seemed a little caught off guard at just many passengers were coming through at 9:00am.
My layover in Long Beach was good, and I was able to take care of some phone calls and emails.

San Francisco has been good so far. A bit cool, verging on cold, but at least I packed a jacket.
Right now, I'm finishing up a surprisingly good sushi dinner in the Ferry Building. I'm not surprised that the sushi is good, rather that their Happy Hour special only runs $10 for a somewhat filling meal. :)

i did go to the city council meeting tonight to oppose their stupid ban on feeding deer and turkeys (you can still feed birds squirrels and anything else.) I'll see if I can find the tv channel that had me on, but the woman who followed me was much more entertaining.

We're not talking about pit bulls, traffic cams or furniture on porches. But the debate over a proposed feeding ban on turkey and deer has become just as passionate for some folks.
On Monday before a scheduled 2nd reading on the ban ordinance by the Sioux City City Council several folks took a turn at making a pitch for protecting their "feeding rights."
For the first time a "friend of feeding" asked the council to consider taking the issue to a "higher power".
"I'd have to ask what would Jesus do"? That's the question Robin Small ask council members on Monday. Small added, "I respect the City Council for trying to help the people that make a complaint but there are other alternatives. What's it going to be next ? Birds, people ? I mean I really find it difficult to believe there even is an issue."
Council member Tom Padgett responded by saying, "Again, not meaning to offend anyone. But I'm not sure the deer have a denominational preference. It's not so much a religious issue as it is that there are too many deer."
Ultimately, the second reading of the feeding ban ordinance passed 3–1. Council member Keith Radig voted no. But not before offering some advice to fellow council member, and ordinance supporter John Fitch.
"You know we'd probably do a lot by just inviting Ted Nuggent down to your golf course after you close John, and have him come into town take out some of that deer population," said Radig.
A third and final reading for the ordinance is set for October 8th.

Sioux City leaders passed the second of three readings on a deer feeding ban, Monday night.
Officials say the wildlife have become not just a nuisance, but a danger to drivers.
Still, some are questioning whether their efforts will be effective.
"I don't see how you're going to enforce this. Anybody who gets a ticket would be crazy not to take it to court and say it wasn't for the deer," asked Sioux City resident Priscilla Forsyth.
Council members made it clear that the feeding ban is the first step toward reducing the local herd.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources requires the city to implement the ban before taking other action to reduce the herd.
However, some residents are trying to convince the council not to move forward with their plans.
"They are a traffic hazard. There are lots of traffic accidents caused because we've got so many deer in the neighborhoods," said John Fitch.
"I have friends and family members that are feeding the deer, and the deer have stopped eating my flowers and everyone else's flowers because they are getting food," said another Sioux City resident, Robin Small.
The ban includes turkeys too, and will come to a final vote on October 8th.
Once it takes effect, the Iowa DNR will look at other measures to decrease the wildlife population, including extending the hunting season around Sioux City and allowing more bow hunting permits.
