Well, you've read the notes, your head was spinning whilst reading the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the spinning cows come home.  They're quite something when they spin.

Thanks, DakotaCelt. I must have been dozing. I don't remember said flashback. How long ago did the car go off the bridge?

The middle of November...

I seemed to recall some cows spinning through the air in the movie, Twister.

Oh I was hoping to hear about THE CALL....now it won't come until the weekend.  Okay....well I guess I will have to wait.  I feel maladjusted.

Wasn't that a Danny Kaye musical The Maladjusted Jester?  With special songs by Sylvia Fine?  Including "I'm Maladjusted" "The Bibbiddi Bobbiddi Juster-Jester" and that great hit "Rimsky-Korny-Koff."

One of several movies I watched yesterday (I have more for today) was a particular Bollywood movie called MY BROTHER NAKHIL....in which a young lady tells the story of her brother, a state swimming champ, who contracts the HIV virus.

Groundbreaking for the Indian cinema in subject - it is VERY well acted, lovely photography, and some really NICE music.

I recommend it to anyone who might be interested.  LONGTIME COMPANION is still my favorite movie on the subject, but MY BROTHER NAKHIL is now a very close second.  Thanks to DRMBARNUM for sending it to me.

Good morning, all!  I had a lovely two days in DC at the Library of Congress, catching up with my friends in the Music Division, having two excellent Mexican meals at two different restaurants with great margaritas, and looking at tons of manuscripts by Victor Herbert and his able assistants.  While my capable colleague Mr Tom Murray wended his way through all of THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER scores, I played amongst the scores of THE RED MILL and then went through about 20 cartons of all the commercially published arrangements of Victor Herbert as I looked for selections, waltzes, marches, polkas, ewtc. arranged from the music to BABES IN TOYLAND and THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER.

Tomorrow, when I return to the office, I will count all the copies we made for reimbursement at $0.20/copy.  We had two copy cards which had balances of $8.55 and $5.85 left when we finished, but I suspect we spent around $120 altogether.  Luckily, there were slow days at the Music Division and we weren't competing for copiers.

Mr Murray drove us down and both trips were quite pleasant, as we listened to a 24-hour musical theatre station on satellite radio.  The trip down took 3.5 hours and the trip back, because of rush hour and road construction took about 5.5!  Oy.

So, now I must catch up on two days of notes.  Anybody die?

TOD; I  enjoy a sharp cheddar, also a nice creamy buttery muenster cheese

Favorite sinful snacks... cheddar cheese melted on a nice thick slice of fresh jewish rye (witrh caraway seeds natch!) or a roastbeed hero with melted muenster cheese.  Also a slice of sharp cheddar  spread with cream cheese (I can feel my artieries clogging just thinking about it!!)

Remember the 70's with all those fondues and wine and cheese bars?  I waitressed in one for a few months.  I like sharp cheddar melted in the fondue with some port wine  added to it......ah them wuz the days

Miss Julia Roberts has now been reviewed by Broadway critics. She didn't get good notices except for Linda Winer from Newsday. I actually like and respect Ms. Winer's thoughts. She's intelligent and her reveiws are well written and sensible, even if I don't agree with what she says. She and Roma Torre (a local critic on NY1 our all news channel) are probably the best critics/reviewers in NY in my huble opinion (IMHO).

I haven't seen the show and I had no desire to see it, although I do like the play. Reading Clive Barnes' review of the show just certifies my belief that he is long past his prime (if he ever had a prime) and he's one of the most embarrassing "critics" in the business.

TOD - In honor of the topic, my brown bag lunch today consists of sliced medium cheddar and Triscuits and an apple.  I like many cheeses, except anything extra sharp.

Most frustrating to me are conflicting health tips regarding cheese - to control cholesterol, I was advised to leave cheese off my sandwiches; to increase my calcium intake, I was advised to add a slice of cheese when I make or order a sandwich!

Favorite cheese treat I'll never have again:  the onion soup at that restaurant at the Riviera Hotel in Vegas.  The first time I was in Vegas, my friend and I ate there almost every night, and I loved the onion soup in a real onion topped with the most amazing cheese concoction, baked to perfection each time.  Next time I was in Vegas, I went to the Riviera and the restaurant was gone.    Of course, I'm wondering if I've turned that cheese into some kind of legendary dish, given that I'll never have it again.

Favorite cheese pun:  Cheeses of Nazareth, of course.

It cracked me up that Fran and Barry finished first. I don't really care for them. But I liked how they worked with the hippies. It's funny because they won't help anyone. But they realized that the hippies could help them!

I can't believe the frat brothers tried to take a short-cut to try to win the leg. That was stupid (although it would have been hilarious if they had done it).

I'm happy the hippies did not get eliminated. Last week they might have deserved it for going 2 hours in the wrong direction. But last night's digging was mostly luck. And i don't like it when a really good team loses because of luck. I was surprised though since they have had really good luck in the past.

Australia (next week) looks awesome. That will be a far trek!

Welcome back, Elmore!! Howz yer dad doing?

Have a nice time, at the presentation today, Ginny. I find these grant seeking workshops so enjoyable - the participants walk out of there looking so hopeful and optimistic. Does my ol' heart good!!

Cheese: fresh mozarella, with very ripe (local, summer) tomatoes, a little fresh basil, parsley, good olive oil, a drizzle of balsamic vinegar!!!

Mozarella di bufalo - made with milk from water buffalo!! Mmmmmm!!!

Aged gorgonzola with a granny smith apple.

Havarti!!! Various double-cream bries and other soft, sweet cheeses like that - like butter!!! I can eat a lotta that stuff - don't get me started!

I am not surprised that ace got voted out. But what was up with chris being bottom 2. That shocked me. I was not surprised paris was bottom 3. I figured ace/paris/elliot.

I can't believe elliot went from bottom 2 to top 3 or 4. IT is crazy how this works. Obviously kellie and taylor are extremely popular. If kellie can stay top 3 even with the judges blasting her. THen I think she will definitely finish in the top 3.

I'm thinking maybe chris' fans just got overconfident, thinking he did not need their votes.  I wonder how close he was to getting eliminated.

With ace gone, it will be tough because anyone could go, any week. I'm sure we will have some surprises.

Well, in my case, I figured Chris was safe, so when I couldn't get votes in for Elliott, I switched over to Ace. Now that Ace is gone, I'll vote for Elliott and switch over to Chris if Elliott's line is busy.

Since Chris had never been in any danger until last night, I'm guessing people with multiple allegiances (like me) sent their votes to Elliott.

I do believe it is a wide open competition now. Taylor and Kellie are the only two who have never been in the bottom three (remember that eventual winners Ruben and Fantasia both finished next to last at ceretain points during their seasons.)

I was also happy that Fran and Barry were in first place....they try very hard! I am not as fond of them as I have been of the previous "older" couples, but I like them well enough.

I was sorry to see Joyce and her boyfriend hit some many personality bumps this episode...they have worked together so well up to this point...even the hippies started to get annoyed with each other...but those frat boys just keep up the good attitude, which is important even if you aren't winning.

Very strange energy from all the teams last night.  Why was there a sudden shunning of the hippies by the other teams at the airport counter?  And the hippies responding by isolating themselves onto another flight?  Ray and Yolonda are bickering, yet they manage to work together and pull themselves up to third place.  The frat boys seemed confuzed and MoJo are tiring out.  It could have taken Fran and Barry forever to find the message box in the watchtowers, but they were helped out by the hippies.  Oman certainly had a strange effect on all.

I think audiences...and audience reactions...are far more rewarding than good reviews.

I think next week's "greatest love songs" theme will make or break a few of the contestants.

Frankly, Chris, Taylor and Kellie ought to be worried how they're going to pull it off.  Chris and Taylor aren't really comfortable singing such things, it seems.  And if "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" is any indication, Kellie better hope there's a country song in the "greatest love songs" list.

Katherine, Elliot and Paris should do very, very well...if they choose wisely.

If Simon were to critique it...HONESTLY...he'd have said:

There are quite a few country-styled love songs so Kellie should be OK. And she didn't sing "Bewitched" nearly as badly as she (or the judges) thought. Yes, she dropped a measure and thus got ahead of the music, but she actually managed to stay on pitch singing ahead of the accompaniment. For me, it showed she does have a reliable ear for the melody.

Welcome back, DR Elmore.

TOD - Almost any aged cheese is fine by me. The stronger, the better. (Can't stand cheese with "added bonuses" however. The other day, at Trader Joe's,  I sampled a some kind of cheese with mango in. Yeck!)
I Love -- and I mean that -- cheese. BUT - I shouldn't eat a lot of it because of high cholesterol (genetic) - so I don't keep any at home. When I go to any gathering that serves cheese, watch out! People must think I haven't eaten for weeks.

Must put in a good day's work. Going to the theater tonight to see THE TEMPEST. This production of the play got excellent reviews (not that reviews mean much). The Tempest is one of those works which can either be sublime or a real trial. It's not easy to do well and when it isn't done well - Oy! (A technical theatrical term.) I've seen it at least ten times throughout my life - the latest being last summer at Stratford, Ontario, with William Hutt, age 80-plus making his farewell appearance as Prospero. Seeing Hutt, still the great artist in full command of his art, was very moving.
...Laters!

...Before I go.... Forgot to say that I finally caught up with this week's episode of HOUSE. Excellent!! Just when I was starting to give up on it, they come up with this morally complex episode that left me sitting there, stunned. It really brought home something they said at the House evening I attended on Moday. One of the creators of the show said that the "procedural" part of each episode - in other words, the solution of the medical mystery - is key,  but secondary to weightier character issues. He said something funny like, "No viewer says, 'Oh! They feature vascular degeneration this week! Gotta see it!'..."
I'd bet a dollar, even two, that this episode gets a writing Emmy (or at least a nomination) next year.

There will be no cheese on today's lunch menu...but yesterday -- AHHHH, YESTERDAY!

Went to "Milano's", a local upscale Italian bistro that has an exquisite menu and scrumptious specials.

My favorite dish is Orzo con Salsiccia...orzo pasta topped with chicken-basil  sausage bites, broccoli, onion, peppers and tomatoes exquisitely sauteed in a garlic-infused olive oil.

I topped it with true Italian parmesan...lovely, nutty, piquant taste with a slightly chewy texture, even when grated.

My second favorite cheese is also Italian...and unique to Italy...mozzarella di bufala.  Oh, I know...you can get buffalo mozzarella in the U.S....but it's not Italian bufala!!!

There is something so creamy and pliant and richly vibrant about the Italian mozzarella.  U.S. mozzarellas can't even aspire to the creaminess and tastiness of it.

In Italia, mozzarella frita (fried mozzarella) melts in your mouth when you bite into it...and the Italian ragu sauce normally served with it beats the pants off anything any restaurant in the U.S. served up.

And Italian mozzarella on a true Italian pizza....OHHH!  HEAVEN!

...Before I go....

Wasn't that a wonderful twist re: the "donating" partner?!

For lunch i am enjoying a lovely sandwich made by my very own two hands,  consisting of Boar's Head brand "Ovengold" turkey breast, and Boar's Head  Brand Swiss cheese on a yummy Pepperidge Farm sesame seed sandwich roll and accompanied by servings of coleslaw and macaroni salads.  The only thing that could make this lunch more perfect would be eating it at the beach instead of at my office desk.

Tylenol Extra Strength Rapid Release Gels, actually.

It's kind of funny, but unlike most products, aspirins and various over the counter pain killers never seem to be discontinued by the manufacturers.  One can still buy Doan's Pills.

Is Sominex still available?

"Take Sominex tonight and sleep...
Safe and gentle...

I always liked that jingle.

Re: last night's TAR.

The former winner of TAR is joyce. The woman on last night's show is Yolanda.

I was shocked to hear her and Ray last night. I don't think we've ever really heard them speak before. At least not more than a word or two.

I didn't like how they argued. But I was more surprised (since it's so late in the season) at their slang talk!

I didn't think about it that the hippies helped fran and barry. Yep it would have taken them forever to find the message in the tower.

I don't care for fran and barry cause they aren't as nice as most of the other older couples. They isolate themselves mostly to the point of being rude. But last night aligned with the hippies (yeah right, since they needed their help). I like it when teams work together.

I still like the frat boys and hippies best, followed by mojo. The 2 guy teams have shown a lot, doing so well. I would have been disappointed if the hippies lost based on bad luck. So i'm glad they didn't go.

Sudden Urgent Vibe Request

Quote
(04/20/06) DEER PARK – About 400 firefighters are at the scene of two separate brush fires in Deer Park and Brentwood, near the Deer Park train station.
Twenty fire departments have responded to the scene with six more on the way. Most of the fire is located in a 25-30 acre section of the Edgewood Oak Brush Preserve. Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy says one firefighter has been injured. The flames in Deer Park have jumped over Long Island Avenue. LIPA has cut off electricity in the area due to the proximity of power lines to the fire. Residents at 200 homes in eastern Deer Park have been told to shut of their electricity due to brush fires. Suffolk County police are evacuating personnel from some nearby businesses.

Witnesses are reporting massive amounts of smoke blanketing nearby neighborhoods. News 12 Long Island’s Bill Korbel reports the smoke is visible on weather radar. Sagtikos Parkway is currently closed in both directions at Pine Aire Drive. In addition, Pine Aire Drive is closed both ways between Long Island Ave. and Sagtikos Parkway. No LIRR trains are running east of Farmingdale but buses will be provided. Also, service to Farmingdale is limited.

This is 1/2 mile from my house.... meanwhile I am currently 30 miles from my house

I cannot help but wonder, though....if there are brush fires in a Brush Preserve...isn't that sort of like inviting such things to happen?

Preserving brush, I mean?

They weren't, by any chance, attempting a "controlled burn" were they?

Many such fires start when winds take hold of a "controlled" burn.

A somewhat irritating video day here today. Started off well enough with a very entertaining episode of BONES from last night.

How nice to see SURVIVOR runner-up Colby Donaldson as a guest star (though he didn't make it through the entire episode). Glad he's getting a varying array of acting gigs. He was on three episodes of JOEY playing comedy and now this drama last night, and there have been others. True, the parts haven't been huge, but it's a start for him. Always liked him a lot.

The irritating part came with last night's CSI: NY. The high definition feed was encoded in Dolby 5.1, but it was missing the center channel (which carries the dialog). I heard nice sound effects in the surrounds and fronts, music, too, but only if the scene was quiet could you hear slight echoes of their speaking in the left front channel, and it wasn't enough for me to be able to follow what they were saying.

I tried turning on closed captioning, but my set didn't bring them forth. So after 15 minutes, I just deleted the show from the DVR. Another CSI to watch for in repeats.

I went ahead and finished disc 2 in the MONK Season 3 set. Two good episodes, one about a crooked game show host and one with Monk working with his former partner, now a discredited cop working as store security officer at a Wal-Mart type department store. The former partner was played by the adorable Enrico Colantoni (currently Veronica Mars' father), and I did not remember it was he playing this role. Made the episode even better on a second viewing.

No, Mike Doyle was another character. Colby played a New Orleans doctor who was skinned alive and hung up in a crucified position during a voodoo ritual. Dr. Brennan was accused of the murder.

AMAZING RACE had a slight ratings bump last night but still didn't quite get to 9 million viewers. BONES won the 8 o'clock hour.

ALIAS finished third in the two timeslots it occupied during its two hour run last night with ratings which pretty much approximated what it scored earlier in the season. Still, its return was at least consistent. COMMANDER IN CHIEF came back to 3 million fewer viewers from its last ratings some two months ago.

When I started working at the library (where I still work) 22 years ago, they had many issues of "After Dark" in storage.  I was the Storage Page and had to deprocess and discard all the old stuff that the selectors had decided to throw out.  They decided to get rid of a lot of magazines and that was one.  Every issue that they had was thrown out (this was long before recycling).  I remember reading through quite a few issues (covertly ;)) while they were still here but wasn't brave enough to take any of the magazines when they got rid of them.  I could've had them all for free.  Darn.

Region 1 is for the US and Canada but UK Region 2 DVDs do not work in most US DVD players (region codes are for DVDs only, not VCRs).  Another difference is NTSC vs. PAL formats.  US VCRs and DVD players only play the NTCS format and British DVD players and VCRs only play PAL.  The formats are not compatible, even though the respective DVDs and videotapes look the same.

There are several of us here on HHW who have region-code-free DVD players (me included) and, if the DVD is NOT copyguarded, can make a VHS copy of a Region 2 DVD.  If you're thinking of getting a UK VHS, then you have to take (or mail) the PAL VHS tape to a place that can convert it.  And that will add to the cost of the tape.  A couple of places around where I live charge at least $20 per two-hour tape.

Hi Gang!

I know that I have been seriously E & T these past couple of weeks.  I'm sorry.  It was heck going back to work.  I’ve been so very tired by the time I get home and the weekends just seem to fly by.

I've tried to keep up with posts but I fear that I've even lost my place with them.  There is no way I can go back and read them all so I will start with today and (hopefully) go forward.

To be very honest, I don't think I shall be posting as much as I would like. I've debated about saying anything but I think I should tell you that my Mother is very ill.

I'm also still struggling with getting over my own surgery.  By mid afternoon I get so tired I have to fight to stay awake.  I fall asleep on the bus ride home more often then not.  Thank goodness for that big bump as we pull into the parking lot where I get off the bus.  It always manages to wake me up.

Some nights it's all I can do to make supper, wash the dishes and run a load of laundry or what ever chore needs to be done. Then I try to sit with Mom for at least a half hour before I feel like I'm going to pass out if I don't lie down.

When I mowed the grass on Saturday morning and had a shower, I was so worn out that I had to lie down.  I didn't wake up until that evening.

I just wanted to say that if I don't post everyday or if I'm not quick to answer your emails, please forgive me during this difficult time.  I'm going to do my best to at least pop by and say "hi".

I hope that everything is going well for all of you. Vibes to any that need them.

 :)

Re: last night's TAR.

I am cheering for Fran and Barry , I actually like them more each time and really don't like the Frat boys at all - of course I never did like frat boys.

I need some advice.  I have to decide this pretty quickly, but there is a group from the Orpheum Society that is going to New York and going to the Tony Awards.  They are also going to Spamalot, but I've seen that and may want to see something else.  A friend is leading the trip and trying to talk me into going. So....I'm wondering if it is impossible to get tickets to anything the weekend of the Tonys.  Would going to the Tonys and sitting wherever the public ends up be worth it?  The trip is June 9-12 but you can stay an extra day for a fee, not sure what that is.

I'm toying with the idea. it's more money that i want to spend, but I've always wanted to go to New York with this friend and it would be a great chance

Does this Bollywood film about HIV/AIDS still have singing and dancing?

Der B and I are back from the new Super G opening in Millville, DE.

The place is H U G E !  Much larger than the store where I work.  Fortunately, much of it is dedicated to elbow room.  While the aisles may be longer than those at "my" store, they are lit well enough so that they don't feel claustrophobic.

Der B was absolutely thrilled with their cheese shoppe (a special island close to the produce section): big selection, lots of variety.  And they've got a very nice olive bar, which has other marinated goodies as well.

The butcher's shop was nice and open; over in seafood, they even had a specialist making sushi!   :o

I "sort of" made a mistake by wearing my work shirt to the opening.  All right, I wanted to be identified as a Super G employee.  So, of course, one of their managers spotted me, and gave me a quizical look.  I introduced myself, and told him I was from the Rehoboth store, and asked "Is there something I can help you with?"  Sure enough, a truckload of shopping carts had just arrived, and I ended up helping moving them from the loading dock (their backstage area is a dream, spacious and airy) to the front of the store.  Der B caught me helping out and just shook his head.  You'd think he would have expected this.

As it is, one of the middle-managers who was helping open the new store will be joining my store in a week, to run our produce section.  Good news, I say, since Nick was getting his start at the Rehoboth store last summer, and we got along great.

Time to get some dinner on the table.

Get a ticket to THE DROWSY CHAPERONE  ASAP!!!!

Life imitates HOUSE….Yesterday Keith read a news report about a woman with the same illness, the first case since 1984, as the last episode.  Continue reading if you want to know what it is.

HOUSE SPOILER!

Yes, the woman was diagnosed with the bubonic plague, no mention of where the infected flea came from.

Well, I have just written the word "as the CURTAIN FALLS".  So, aside from additions and futzing once I go back and read, act one of the new play is done.  I'm pretty happy with the feel of it and I think it moves along, but I won't know until I hear it out loud.  I now have to decide whether to do a read-through of act one before beginning act two.  It probably would be helpful, but I'm not sure.  What say all of you?

I'm going out to an impromptu dinner with la Deutsch shortly.

Cillaliz-
The following is from TPunk: She says it is fun to go the Tonys with friends as a one-time thing. The seats are kinda far back, but you do feel like you're a part of things. It gets a little long at times, but it depends on the host, they will crack some jokes that only the live audience gets to hear.

She also says tickets shouldn't be too difficult to come by at that time. Any more difficult than usual. Hit shows will be harder to get, and so forth...

Since I didn't get to see CSI: NY with the defective HD feed from CBS, I took out the CSI: NY season 1 boxed set and selected an episode to watch tonight prior to network TV kicking in.

It involved a massacre in a diner that Danny was assigned to earn his CSI second grade designation. Interesting case and an enjoyable episode.

Mac and STella investigated the amputation death of a man who had a healthy leg he chose to have chopped off. That, too, was a very weird case but quite fascinating.

This is KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER for the new century. Yep, we've got two hunks instead of a wily middle aged reporter. But the set-ups are the same and with the miracles of modern technology, the special effects far supersede what was done with KOLCHAK.

 :)

My thoughts and prayers are with you, Danise.

****Best of Vibes to DR Danise and her Mom****

Have returned from the theater where I had gone to see THE TEMPEST. We were told as we entered that the show ran 90 minutes with no intermisssion. This seemed very peculiar. A 90 minute Tempest? Unless they cut half the play, not possible. Well, it turned out that my friend had ordered tickets for Thursday night - not realizing that several shows were playing. And tonight was UBU ROI. Which is definitely not Shakespeare. I've never seen it before. Studied it in theater school, period. Well, it turned out to be a really fantastic production. So glad I saw it.
