MIDNIGHT AT THE OASIS
« on: May 11, 2006, 12:31:56 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were like an oasis at midnight, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're over at the oasis right now and they can't be bothered to come home.

I just got home from the reading rehearsal - now, instead of a sort of Scottish brogue, the director lady wants an upper-crust English accent - so I sounded quite a bit like Mary Poppins for the end of the rehearsal.

I'll watch Bridget Jones Diary a few times, and emulate all the accents rolled into one...

TOD:

The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes

and DR CP's version of THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES is very good!

Basil Rathbone as Holmes in an earlier version of BASKERVILLES is my favorite in THAT series.

I've heard of parboil (cooking something briefly in boiling water before the actual cooking is done).  So I have to conclude that parsnip refers to the rough edit of a film, before commencing on the final edit, one of our esteemed BK's many talents.

TOD: Der Brucer is a better fellow for this topic than I, since he's the mystery buff.

We went to the Sherlock Holmes Museum when we were in London in 2003. Anthony loved it. We have pictures. I might have posted one or two of them in January of 2004 (over two years ago, how time flies!).

I think we went to Sherlock Homes museum some years ago.  We once stayed at the Sherlcok Holmes Hotel which is at hisaddress on Baker Street.  Quite  nice little place, actually.

Haines is a better place, though, with better people.  Some very lovely ones, in fact!

Good morning, all!  I arrived at the library by 8:50 am to beat out the hoard of homeless who congregate at 9 to take over the computers (oy!) for God alone knows what reason.

Dear Friend BK, who was the actor playing Holmes?  You liked him, but didn't mention a name.

DR JRand55, I'm glad you're enjoying Mr Juan Diego Florez.  He's got a lighter tenor than Mario, but it's a wonderful sound for early Verdi and Rossini.

TOD:
  DR CharlesPogue's HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES
  BAKER STREET
  William Gillette's play version
  Did you know that Holmes & Watson have an Act Two appearance in Victor Herbert's 1906 musical THE RED MILL?

Good morning everyone!

~~~~WONDERFUL NEWS ALERT~~~~
Well, I can now offically say that a real live HHW wedding will actually be taking place!  Last night former DB, now DF Jed took me out for a romantic dinner at IHOP  (for us, it was perfect) and then took me along the Tacoma waterfront, out on the pier, and slipped a ring on my finger.  I, who am not normally prone to girlish behavoir, confess that I spent the first minute or so jumping up and down and making squeaking noises before managing to accept.
For those who might be interested, the ring is GORGEOUS.  Very simple white gold setting, beautiful round cut diamond, just under a half carat, and very VERY sparkly.  I dreamt about announcing it to people all night, and woke up half sure that the whole proposal had been a dream of mine.  But it's better than a dream!  (Oh, a Bells are Ringing reference :) )
Good morning!
Another overcast day here with temps in the high 70s, but much to my surprise, the five day forecast shows that temps are going to be dropping again over the next four days to back below 60 for a high on Monday! Good grief (a Charlie Brown reference)!
During my years of teaching, we had various Holmes tales included in anthologies that I taught. My favorite one to teach coincided with my favorite tale that I read growing up - "The Speckled Band." I also loved "The Red Headed League."
Basil Rathbone will always occupy for me the highest place of honor in the Holmes gallery though many others have done fine jobs portraying him.
My favorite of the fourteen films he made as Holmes was THE HOUSE OF FEAR. THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, done on a larger budget than the Universal B-movies and done in period, is my favorite of his earlier work as Holmes.
Rewatching the Hammer HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES just a few days ago, I really enjoyed Peter Cushing tremendously. He's not tall enough to be the perfect Holmes, of course, but in every other way, he's superb.
One Holmes picture I haven't seen in decades is A STUDY IN TERROR, but I remember liking it very much. THE SEVEN PERCENT SOLUTION is also very enjoyable.
