BK, does this LUNCH HOUR film have anything to do with the Bway play that Gilda Radner did in the 80's? It was written by Jean Kerr.

I had forgotten I saw that! It wasn't very good and I love Jean Kerr. Wasn't Sam Waterston in it as well?

Oh, yeah. I grew up with tornadoes. There was a big one in May of 1965 which we missed because we were back in Michigan for my grandfather's funeral. There is nothing like a tornado sky. When you see it you remember it. Also the stillness just before one hits and the energy in the air and the color of the sky are all distinctive.
My sister does have power again. It came back last night around 10pm. They have to throw out everything in the freezer and refrigerator. I assume they will get compensated (Con Ed did it for New Yorkers after the last big black out).
These recent tornado events have been terrible in the amount of loss of life and devastation. In all my life, I don't recall this much happening this often. At worse, you would hear about a neighborhood being wiped out but this Spring we've had almost entire towns being destroyed. What is going on with the weather?
Do you not usually have newspapers on holidays, Jennifer?

Glad to hear that things are getting back on track for your sister. I've been a bit fuzzy about things....did she have any damage?
Speaking of Roscoe Karns (and this will show you why I have splinters in the windmills of my mind)--I tried to track down Katherine Orrison, the lady who does the commentary on The Ten Commandments, to ask her where/how she got her information that Herb Alpert is one of the kids trying to get the mule "started" in the Exodus sequence. Herb is indeed in the film as an extra, but he was 20 or 21 when it was filmed, so unless he was a *really* good actor, I don't think he could have pulled off being 6 or 7, the age of the little boy in that sequence. Katherine does not have her own email, she has a "handler" who forwards everything, and his nom d'internet is Roscoe Karns. He told me he had forwarded my inquiry, but she never responded. B****. :)

IMDb indicates he was "drummer on Mt. Sinai" [uncredited] in "The 10 Commandments".
Now I'm imagining THE TEN COMMANDMENTS with a Herb Alpert score.

DR John G - One of my favorite authors, David McCullough has a brand new book out:
The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris (http://www.amazon.com/Greater-Journey-Americans-Paris/dp/1416571760/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1306245112&sr=8-1)
It covers the years 1830-1900 - too early for Cole Porter - but it may provide some historical insights to the ex-pat experience that would be useful for your paper.

So, we're all set for Friday's presentation at the Frederick Loewe Room of the Dramatists Guild. I've checked all my emails and opened a UPS package and today's mail. Now I have to write a lead sheet for "The Christ Child's Lullaby" and "I Wonder As I Wander." My original choral arrangement is way too difficult for the singers to learn by Friday, and there are more important priorities. I'll write a spectacular arrangement when the time comes!
"When the world did not end at precisely 6 p.m. yesterday, Doomsday prophet Robert Fitzpatrick's fragile grasp on reality crumbled.
"I don't understand why nothing is happening," said Fitzpatrick, flipping through his Bible for clues to why Rapture failed to show up on time.
"It's not a mistake. I did what I had to do. I did what the Bible said," he said, looking increasingly disheveled and confused as he stood in Times Square before mocking crowds."

Tuesday morning greetings! Another sleep-in day in our household, because we were all up quite late last night. I wanted to hear about Rob's day with the paramedics in Dayton and he didn't get home until after midnight. He is now officially finished with his practice time and just has to pass the exams before being a full-fledged paramedic.
TOD: I'm looking forward to seeing "Midnight in Paris," too. That's the first time I've said that about Woody Allen movie in more than a decade.

I think the tryptophan an thing is correct, I had a turkey sandwich for lunch, and now I'm dead tired. I think I may head to the workout room and workout a bit. I have a <cough>date<cough> this eve... it's an interesting one as we are getting together to listen to Love Never Dies (yes, on purpose - DON'T JUDGE ME!!! LOL) and I kinda want to be awake.
So, I'm listening to the new Andrew Lloyd Webber version of The Wizard of Oz (I actually like it) and when Dorothy and the gang go to meet the wizard for the first time, the Wizard asks, "Which of you is Dorothy?" She says, "Sir, I am Dorothy." And the lion ("with great dignity," according to the booklet) says, "And I, sir, am proud to be a friend of Dorothy."
I laughed out loud! ;D

I think that Laura needs this hat:
DR Elmore, glad Marilyn's family is ok.
Thanks for the photo and report DR BEN.
The parents and sister of Marilyn our pianist live in Joplin. They are all safe. Her sister lost her house and car, but parents house is okay.
No electricity or natural gas as of last night - but they survived, which is good news!

? ? ? ? ? ? I am clearly missing something here and I'm too tired to decipher it. Can you elucidate?
Thanks for the photo and report DR BEN.

DR elmore last night we finally watched the first episode of Downton Abbey. :)
I enjoyed it, especially Eileen Atkins.
i don't see her listed in the cast.
I saw Follies Sunday and thought it was great. So this afternoon I went to a behind-the-scenes discussion and Q&A with the four leads (Bernadette Peters, Ron Raines, Jan Maxwell and Danny Burstein) and Elaine Paige. The host asked questions about how the actors approached the characters, etc. He said that he understood that the song "I'm Still Here" was based on Joan Crawford's career, which kind of surprised me (I thought I had read that Stephen Sondheim had actually gotten some input from Yvonne DeCarlo, who sang the song in the 1971 production). Anyway, Elaine Paige started to talk about the picture of Joan Crawford that's on the wall of the set and how that was related to the song, etc, when her castmates corrected her--it's a picture of Gloria Swanson, not Crawford. So Ms. Paige said, (paraphrasing) "oh, I don't know the story about Joan Crawford."
The host asked about the performers' previous experiences with Follies. Ron Raines said that he had played the same role (Ben) when he was in his early 30's and that he was too young. Amazingly, both Jan Maxwell and Danny Burstein said that they had never seen the show and Ms. Maxwell said that she really hadn't known anything about it. They both said that they couldn't turn down the chance to do a Sondheim show. The host asked how each actor came to be in the show. They all said they were offered the parts, except Ron Raines, who said that he had auditioned and was happy to do so.

You're right! She's in the new series of UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS. It's Maggie Smith in DOWNTON ABBEY!
cilla does joe have any family?
Well, he does, but Jon and his family are really Joe's only family. His mom sent him $20 and his brother called and said he was glad he made it and didn't even offer to help. I don't know what's up with his family. He comes from a very strict Baptist family. I don't know if they act this way because it's how they are or because they don't approve of the fact he's gay. I've never been able to figure it out. Instead of donating to the Red Cross, I sent the same amount to Joe.
I'm remembering a few more tidbits:
The actors were asked how their costumes related to the character. Bernadette said that her character wore red so her long-lost love, Ben, wouldn't miss her.
They were asked if they approached the songs differently in the show as compared to singing them in concert. Ron Raines mentioned that people say that they finally understand Sondheim's most well known song "Send in the Clowns" when they see it in
"A Little Night Music." Bernadette stated that she would probably never sing that song in concert unless there were some way to put it in context.
I know the Red Cross does a lot of good work, but I am inclined to agree on disaster relief. So, are there any good charities that will actually help the people of Joplin? I'm thinking my Lutheran insurance company might help, but I'm not entirely sure. They usually do in these cases and they match donations up to a certain point.cilla does joe have any family?

That's a great gesture, DR cillaliz. I would think most of what you'd give to the Red Cross probably goes to administration and a fundraiser who'll ask for more donations.
From the comments, or lack of them, I feared if he had family they were useless. Thank goodness for your family & that he has a place to live. Did he own or rent the house?
Jane, I believe there is only one season so far of DOWNTON ABBEY, but I heard another is/may be in the works.
I thought it funny to see Brendon Coyle in both shows, too.
Just got off the phone with my nephew, who turned 34 today ("Sunrise , sunset...). He's a personal trainer now and if you fitness fans want to check out his online program, here's a link:

That's amazing, FJL, seeing Follies three times in one weekend! I think I will go back before it leaves.
DRs, my college friend Craig needs vibes. He's having surgery for a tumor in the morning and I'm praying it goes well. We were really good friends when i was a grad student and I want him to come out of this alive and well.Vibes and prayers for Craig.

Yesterday DR TCB wrote:QuoteDo you not usually have newspapers on holidays, Jennifer?
Usually no, which is why i was surprised.
Is it common in the US to have newspapers on holidays?
Why is it the people with the smallest parts are the most irritating and picky about their costumes? When it doesn't even really matter what they wear......the woman who plays the part of the farmer's wife in the Iowa Stubborn "American Gothic" moment and the farmer himself - keep making demands about how they need this or that.....
Last night she said to me (she has bleached blonde hair) - "How do I make my hair gray....are you going to buy me hair spray or will you use baby powder on me?"
I said...No, you will wear a wig - no need to spend all that time [ie money] on you.
Well in the picture she is wearing a bun and the hair is parted in the middle.
You will wear whatever gray wig we have upstairs.
In BOTH of the other shows I have been in with her - she decided one night to just not come to a performance because she was "tired" and needed to rest....
In rehearsal for our 8th grade <ahem> project of Grease - scene changes are killing us! - Well, them, anyway!
Well, today the cast started making music from what they learned yesterday, and they're a wonderful group of performers. The bluegrass "Christmas Time's A-Comin" sounded so good with the fiddle, guitars, accordion and bass imptovising that I wanted to call my sister-in-law JoAnn and have them serenade her. I really wish my dad were still alive to come to the reading on Friday; he'd think he'd died and gone to heaven!

DR Matthew - Did you ever have one in the first place? ;D
Continued:
Some of the audience members managed to make the questions about themselves. Two or three mentioned seeing the original production. After that a young man of about 20 stated that "believe it or not, I didn't see the show in 1971." One guy stated that he "talked a lot" because he was from New York. He asked if the show was coming to Broadway and the cast said they didn't know. He pressed them to see if they had any idea and they really didn't. Mr. Raines said "we just opened here and we're thrilled."

And now, I'm off to the Washington Center's Volunteer appreciation night! I'm sure they'll announce some really good performers for their next season! :D
Until later!
