More Very Important News for JR:

SMASH will deal with a songwriting team attempting to write a musical about (wait for it) Marilyn Monroe.

Someone named Steven Spielberg is the executive producer.

I sense hijinks will abound featuring Debra Messing in a platinum blonde wig.

And now, I'm off to the Washington Center's Volunteer appreciation night!  I'm sure they'll announce some really good performers for their next season! :D

Until later!

Thanks for the photo and report DR BEN.

The parents and sister of Marilyn our pianist live in Joplin.  They are all safe.  Her sister lost her house and car, but parents house is okay.

No electricity or natural gas as of last night - but they survived, which is good news!

OOPS! I meant DR JRand...not DR Elmore

Thank you! I was totally lost.

Speaking of Joplin, the CBS news tonight was heartbreaking. They were interviewing a doctor there, and, as he was talking about the devastation, he broke down and began sobbing.

I saw Follies Sunday and thought it was great.    So this afternoon I went to a behind-the-scenes discussion and Q&A with the four leads (Bernadette Peters, Ron Raines, Jan Maxwell and Danny Burstein) and Elaine Paige.   The host asked questions about how the actors approached the characters, etc.   He said that he understood that the song "I'm Still Here" was based on Joan Crawford's career, which kind of surprised me (I thought I had read that Stephen Sondheim had actually gotten some input from Yvonne DeCarlo, who sang the song in the 1971 production).  Anyway, Elaine Paige started to talk about the picture of Joan Crawford that's on the wall of the set and how that was related to the song, etc, when her castmates corrected her--it's a picture of Gloria Swanson, not Crawford.   So Ms. Paige said, (paraphrasing)  "oh, I don't know the story about Joan Crawford."

The host asked about the performers' previous experiences with Follies.  Ron Raines said that he had played the same role (Ben) when he was in his early 30's and that he was too young.    Amazingly, both Jan Maxwell and Danny Burstein said that they had never seen the show and Ms. Maxwell said that she really hadn't known anything about it.  They both said that they couldn't turn down the chance to do a Sondheim show.   The host asked how each actor came to be in the show.   They all said they were offered the parts, except Ron Raines, who said that he had auditioned and was happy to do so.

DR John G - One of my favorite authors, David McCullough has a brand new book out:

The Greater Journey:  Americans in Paris

It covers the years 1830-1900 - too early for Cole Porter - but it may provide some historical insights to the ex-pat experience that would be useful for your paper.

I saw that. I love his books, especially the one on John Adams. I will definitely check it out.

DR John G, you should also check out that book about Sara and Gerald Murphy, LIVING WELL IS THE BEST REVENGE. Murphy wrote the libretto for the Porter ballet, "Within the Quota."
Will  do. And I have the recording of that, too.

We went from watching LARK RISE TO CANDLEFORD to the opening scene of Abbey with Brendan Coyle riding the train.  We had just seen him in Lark Rise & wasn't expecting him on the train. :)

TOD:  I'm looking forward to seeing "Midnight in Paris," too. That's the first time I've said that about Woody Allen movie in more than a decade.

Keith's aunt says it is his best movie.  :o  I too am now looking forward to seeing it.
It's partially set in the Jazz Age with Cole Porter, Hemingway, et al. So, it fits.

Continued:

Some of the audience members managed to make the questions about themselves.  Two or three mentioned seeing the original production.  After that a young man of about 20 stated that "believe it or not, I didn't see the show in 1971."  One guy stated that he "talked a lot" because he was from New York.  He asked if the show was coming to Broadway and the cast said they didn't know.  He pressed them to see if they had any idea and they really didn't.  Mr. Raines said "we just opened here and we're thrilled."

Someone else asked Bernadette if she were going to introduce someone to the works of Stephen Sondheim and she could only give one song as an example she said she really couldn't since he does so many different styles of songs.  She did mention "Children Will Listen" as one of her favorites.

The host asked Ron Raines to compare his role in this show with his in Showboat (Gaylord Ravenel (I think that's it, right, musical experts?!).   The host said "they're both losers."  Ron talked a little about them and Danny said " we worked together in that show and you were brilliant.  Ron said "you were very young then."
