DRIED FRUIT

Well, you've read the notes, you've kicked some dried fruit, and now it is time for you to post until the dried cows come home.  To it, I say.

"The Innocents" is my favourite "ghost tale. ("The Turn Of The Screw").
The film is everything "The Others" is not.
I have no desire to see the remake of "The Innocents".

"The Innocents" is my favourite "ghost tale. ("The Turn Of The Screw").

When I was going to college in Bellingham, WA (which is just south of the US/Canada border), we would go the final dress rehearsals of Vancouver Opera for only $5 American!  (The price has since gone up ;))  One time we saw Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw.  I hadn't seen a lot of operas at that time but it was one of the most incredible theater experiences that I ever had.  I was absolutely riveted.  The singers, of course, were wonderful, but the staging and set were very simply done, but so effective.  I've never seen another production of it, but I know that  if I do, I probably won't feel the same way.

I haven't gotten any e-mail like that...so far.  I have gotten e-mails that seem to have bounced back to me (as the sender) except that I never sent those e-mails that came back!  Fortunately, it's not an e-mail address that I use very much, so I could easily delete it and create a new one.  I'm seriously thinking about that anyway since that e-mail address is getting a lot of spam...and the amount's been increasing lately.  I hate it when that happens. :P

Good Morning!

Ghost stories...

The only things that come to mind right now are "Like Water for Chocolate" and "The Other" and "The Others"  - those are two (three) different things aren't they?

Oh, and I guess "The Secret Garden"...

I need to sleep on this one.... shortly...

Now, in fact.

Goodnight.

Good morning, all!  It seems quite lovely out this morning; the temperature has dropped, and I slept quite well last night. Today is my second visit to the surgeon after the surgery.  It's officially four weeks now, and we'll see how it's going.  Then, it's another DARLING OF THE DAY workday.

TOD:
  Short stories:
     Le Fanu:  Schalken the Painter
Irving: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
     Dickens: A Christmas Carol
M.R. James:  Oh, Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad

  Novels:  Macardle:  The Uninvited
             Straub:  Ghost Story
             Hill:  The Woman in Black

  Music:   Dvorak: The Spectre's Bride
Britten:  The Turn of the Screw
             Wagner:  The Flying Dutchman

  Film:    The Innocents
             The Uninvited

  Plays:    The Innocents
              The Woman in Black

While I like very much the Britten TURN OF THE SCREW and the film adaptation of Jack Clayton's, based on William Archibald's play, I can't say I think much of the original Henry James story, which is like reading a ghost story in smoke signals:  you're not certain you're catching everything before the wind blows the words away.  I find the story's critical psychoanalysis much more fascinating.

Two films come to mind for the top.

The Haunting (The Robet Wise original)
Less is More
The Legend of Hell House
Much like The Haunting. Small cast, a house and a mystery

How could I have forgotten Shirley Jackson's THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE and its great film adaptation?  Senility? Sunspots?

TOD:  Other DRs have already mentioned most of my favorites.  Of the classic, romance-type ghost stories, I can add only Portrait of Jennie.  For sheer fun, there's Poltergeist, which is an amusement park ride of a ghost story.  And my favorite ghost comedy is Beetlejuice.

Has anyone seen the preview for Tim Burton's The Corpse Bride?  That one looks like fun.

Favorite ghost movies:

GHOST OF DRAGSTRIP HOLLOW
BEES SAAL BAAD
GHOST AND MRS. MUIR

I know I have read some ghost stories but can't think of a single title this early in the morning.

Well, I'm back from the surgeon and feeling somewhat better; he says everything's healing fine.  My last visit is in a month:  I'm off to DC the last week of June and then he's off for two weeks to Hawaii (20th wedding anniversary).  He's a very good man, and I hope he has a great holiday.

THE GHOST AND MRS MUIR, TOPPER, BEETLEJUICE!  What's run away with my mind?

I do not remember the movies of the Ghost & Mrs. Muir or Topper although I know I saw them at one time, but both TV  series were favorites of mine when I was knee high to a grasshopper.

I had quite the crush on the captain in the TV series, I think that's when I started liking men with beards (although Santa may have been a profound influence with his habit of leaving free  toys) :D

Great news, DR elmore  :-*

Missed being here with all of you yesterday - it was a packed work day for me.  Today is much more relaxed - all the managers are in a meeting upstairs!

It's cloudy here in SW Ohio, but blessedly cool after about a week of oppressive humidity.

My favorite ghost story involves DH Richard's paternal grandmother, a lifelong Anglophile.  She lived in Ohio until she was widowed shortly after Richard's parents were married (early 1940's).  She then moved to California to live near her daughter and had a lifelong unfulfilled dream to visit England.  When she died in CA, she was cremated, and her remains were to be flown back to Ohio for burial near her husband.  Richard's father and uncle went to the Cincinnati airport to claim her ashes.  The package did not arrive on the scheduled flight and they had to wait some time for it to be found.  When the airline personnel traced the package, they determined that it had come from California to Ohio by way of.........

England.

After today's notes, I was sure the topic was going to be favorite dried fruit. I especially like dried pineapple and the round orange slices.

DRs MBarnum and Dan (the Man) have named my two favorite movie ghost stories: THE GOST AND MRS. MUIR and PORTRAIT OF JENNIE. The latter is probably my all-time favorite. Also a BIG fan of Robert Wise's THE HAUNTING.

I happen to like THE OTHERS very much, much more so than THE SIXTH SENSE.

I only saw THE INNOCENTS once on TV many years ago chopped up by TV commercials, and it didn't play well under those conditions. I look forward to reinvestigating it upon its DVD release.
