I think DR ELMORE sent me a nice version of PINAFORE on CD a couple of years ago.

I don't like today's gory, uber-violent horror films. I've had to review some, and they've been torture for me to sit through. At the same time, when it comes time to review them, I bend over backwards to find positive things to say since even they aren't all bad.

Today's work project, the last film in the Oshima box set, is THREE RESURRECTED DRUNKARDS. The brief blurb on the box makes it sound like a comedy. That would be novel coming from this director and something I'd like to see: a little lightness and less serious, arty tone.

I also have an embarrassment of riches on the DVR as last night's reruns of NCIS (season premiere), THE MENTALIST (when Patrick gets hit with the baseball), and CASTLE all look like fun revisits. I also have Thursday night's FLASH FORWARD which I have less enthusiasm for.

Tonight brings new episodes of THE TUDORS and BROTHERS & SISTERS for me. John Barrowman is back on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, too, so I understand, but as much as I love him, I just can't bring myself to watch this show any more.

Another war film I really enjoyed was PORK CHOP HILL with Gregory Peck.

There are NO performers out there that I dislike so much that I'd deny myself a look at a movie or TV show I wanted to see because of them. They're never in every second of the show so that leaves plenty of pleasurable things to watch between their appearances. I would never let ANY actor have that much power over my choices.

Quote
Howard Shore’s score is long and loud and I’d be hard-pressed to recall a single theme in it.

That's what makes horse racing, bk!

I find each of LORD OF THE RINGS' film scores to be one great achievement after another with very memorable themes for persons, places and things such as The Shire, Isingard, The Ring, Gollum, the returning king, the steward, the gray ships, prayers and fulfillments.  I admire how Howard Shore takes his Shire theme and weaves it in and out of all three films, growing darker and bit more dissonant with each installment.
Of the 'songs' written for the films, only Enya's "May it Be" and Annie Lennox' "Into the West" left lasing impressions on me.
I've seen THE LORD OF THE RINGS SYMPHONY live twice, once with Howard Shore conducting (Sissel was the featured vocalist) and again with John Macueri conducting (Billy Boyd, the films' Pippin was featured).  Your personal friend Susan Egan has also performed with this touring symphony.

but I certainly wouldn’t put them anywhere near my top films of all time list.

Once again, horse racing!   After seeing each of the films theatrically, each one entered a spot in my top ten film favorites.

Good morning from Hollywood!

I went to see Chicago last night.  Michelle Williams, who I'm not really familiar with, was out as Roxie.   The understudy, whose name I don't remember, was very good.  Terra C McLeod was great as Velma.  Mary Sunshine and Amos were teriffic.   And, of course, our very own Brent Barrett was perfection as Billy Flynn.  He held the note in "We Both Reached for the Gun" for what seemed forever!  I think the cast was having a good time because the audience was so responsive.

My friend from Fullerton is coming in on the train.  We're going to have lunch and then it's back to Chicago.  A couple of other friends are joining us at the theatre and then for an early dinner.

The bad news:  it's cold and dreary here.

The good news:  you're too addle-pated to know and/or care.  ;)

I reviewed OUT OF AFRICA for Blu-ray.com, Vixmom.  Matt--the BD is a flipper, so the DVD version is on the "B-side."  I am interested to hear if anyone else experiences the "grinding" noise when the BD side loads.  It was really quite loud on the two PS3's I tried it on.

I will say, as I mentioned in my review, I have found *all* home video transfers of OUT OF AFRICA to be pretty ugly looking.  The BD just ups the ante.  ;)
