Title: I'M DANCING AS FAST AS I CAN

Well, you've read the notes, you've danced to the notes, and now it is time to post until the dancing cows come home - they studied with Arthur Mooray you know.  We don't allow groaning here at haineshisway.com.

I didn't quite catch the word of the day. Someone was speaking too loudly.

Lloyd Price sang "Question" but I can't think of one now.

Good morning, all!  All of this inhaling of Liquid Paper fumes is killing me!  I will be glad when this GOLDEN APPLE cleanup is finished, but the regular nausea and headache is not fun.  While I was dividing the job with DARLING OF THE DAY, I didn't realize the problem, but yesterday after sniffing Liquid Paper all day, I realized the source of my ailments of the past week.

So, the problems with contracts and payments on the show continue, and I do not understand the reasons for them:  I'm due one more final payment, but my copyist is now suffering all the frustrations I've been going through since last November.  Nearly a year now, and no contracts: I have never before encountered on any job such poor business practice.

So, Dear Friend BK, when's the next live chat?

TPunk, great news about GMHC. You will kind of be in our neighborhood. We're at 16th Street and you will be at 24th Street.

FJL, 51 posts puts you at Junior Member if I recall correctly and then 101 posts makes you a Full Member and finally 501 posts makes you an HHW God. There are no other changes after that although when you see your numbers creeping up toward 1000 or 10,000 (BK & JRand have hit that mark) you realize how much time you can spend here  :)

Well, I have no questions at the moment and I must begin working. It's the difficult time of the year for me. We have begun our annual overtime crunch so I'm working early morning hours and beginning this Saturday (August 6th) I will be in the office also through October 22nd. Ugh.

I'll be back.

Why inhale? There are other products that you can use. There is a pratically good one that is a small container and covers one line at a time. Don;t know the name of it. But take a look for it.

DRMichaelShayne, if I knew what it was, weren't on a deadline, and knew that this product was as good for rewriting on score paper, I'd do so.  I have to have this clean up done by monday:  it will take two weeks to scan the new masters and to print new parts for the concert, which is August 28th. This would put the orchestra rehearsals sometime between Aug 21 and 27!  I do appreciate your concern, but I'm screwed.

Yhank you, dear friend!  It doesn't look as expedient a solution as Liquid Paper, alas.  You simply cover the old note, redraw the bar line in ink and write in the new note.  And pass out from the fumes.

Elmore- the correction tape works quite well--you can instantly write over it without getting gunk on your pen and no fumes.  Secretaral tip of the day.

Bruce, you siad you and Vinnie were going to put the whipped cream on Stages.  Please leave off the whippped cream when it's done and you ship mine.  I love whipped cream (and a cherry), but I don't think it will ship well.

There are several different brands of correction tape.

I prefer the Liquid Paper brand called Dryline Grip.  You can get one at any Staples, OfficeMax, Duane Reades.

I use it constantly at work.. no fumes, you can immediately write over it and it doesn't leave a shadow when you photocopy.  I do recommend you give it a try dear elmore

I'm on-line a little earlier than usual. I have a full day today including packing for my NYC trip, getting various household chores done, waiting for my friend to arrive who's accompanying me to NYC and going out to dinner with him and the OTHER friend who's also going to NYC.

A full day. I'd also like to watch some things already on the DVR including RENO 911!, THE FORGOTTEN (Julianne Moore movie), and TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT which I also recorded the other night. I know I won't get all of that watched, but I'll make an effort.

All right, I'm going to walk around the corner to Staples and buy some.  Then I will try it out on some blank music paper.

Are we suddenly in Cinemascope or are my eyes fogging up from the fumes?

I hope it works out well for you. I have been using it for several years and would never go back to correction fluid.

I suggest  you avoid the BIC brand... I find that too flimsy and it often breaks inside the applicator.

Title: Re:I'M DANCING AS FAST AS I CAN

DR elmore et al - As for correction fluid vs. correction tape...  I tried the correction tape once when I was editing some parts and found it a bit cumbersome to deal with.  It's really "built" for correcting text, text that is one straight line across a page.  It didn't work so well for me with music, music notes - dots, squiggles and scribbles.  Sometimes I'd have to create a sort of patch job with it depending on the correction.  Yes, the Liquid stuff is sort of fumey, but I found it faster when working with manuscripts.

However...

They do make some non-fumey Liquid Paper now - or at least some similar brand.

However...

I found that it did not try as fast (at least in my experience), and that it did not respond well to ink and nibs - if you happen to be using a nib and ink for your corrections.  -Which I don't do all the time, but find "fascinating" to work with when I have worked with those tools.

DR Jrand - For butterscotch whipped cream, you simply sweeten regular whipped cream with brown sugar instead of the standard granular white stuff.  And add a dash of Butter Flavored Extract - yes, they do make such a thing, just your baking aisle - in place of vanilla.  I forget the exact proportion of sugar to cream, but simply replace the amount of white sugar with brown sugar.  And like in standard whipped cream recipes, don't start adding the sugar until the cream has started to thicken up a bit.  And be sure to break up the brown sugar as much as you can to avoid lumps.  -Although, I guess you could use that "brownulated" stuff that Domino makes.  Hmm...

...Unless Cool Whip has come out with another flavor...

*You can also use pulverized Butterscotch Candy Discs - just put them in a blender or food processor - or a ziploc bag and give them a couple of good whacks with a rolling pin.

**That's how I like to do Peppermint Whipped Cream, in fact.

Question for Ask BK Day -

Has there ever been an artist that you've encountered - either just as an audience member or in the recording studio - who "records" differently than they sound live?

This may be a moot point with today's recording technology, but was there anyone who "surprised" you live vs. on record, or vice versa?

And on a related note...

This has happened to me a few times...and I mainly happens during animated features...

Was their a "voice talent" who's voice was so manipulated for a project that you didn't recognize it at all?

I swear some of the filtering and crap they do to some "stars" voices today for some animated features makes them unknown to me.

and since we're talking butterscotch...

Butterscotch Cheesecake
Vanilla Cookie Crust

12 vanilla sandwich cream cookies, crushed
3 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted

In a small bowl stir together crushed cookies and melted butter or margarine until well combined. Press crumb mixture evenly onto the bottom of a greased 9-inch springform pan.

Butterscotch Filling

24 ounces cream cheese
3/4 cup dark brown sugar
5 teaspoons cornstarch
3 eggs
1 egg yolk
1/2 cup butterscotch schnapps
1/4 cup sour cream
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

In a large bowl combine cream cheese, brown sugar, and cornstarch. Beat with an electric mixer until smooth. Add eggs and egg yolk, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in butterscotch schnapps, sour cream, and vanilla extract. Pour the cream cheese mixture over the crust.

Bake at 350° for 15 minutes. Lower the temperature to 200° and bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes or until the center no longer looks wet or shiny. Remove the cake from the oven and run a knife around the inside edge of the pan. Turn the oven off. Return the cake to the oven for an additional hour. Chill, uncovered, overnight.

Butterscotch Whipped Cream Topping

1 cup whipping cream
1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon butterscotch schnapps
1/2 cup coarsely crushed butterscotch candies

In a small bowl beat whipping cream, brown sugar, and schnapps with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form. Pipe whipped cream mixture around the edge of the cheesecake. Sprinkle with butterscotch candies. Chill until serving time. Makes 12 to 18 slices.

DR MattH, no spoilers here.  But re: the Forgotten, I just watched it a couple of days ago.  The ending left me less than satisfied.  So while I enjoyed most of the movie, I just prefer these movies with twists (like Sixth Sense) to really be well thought out and to make sense.

Btw, watch the alternate ending if you can.  They basically have the theatrical version and an uncut version (with deleted scenes and the alternate ending).  I ff'ed thru #2 and only noticed one additional scene.  But the last 20 minutes are quite different.

Well, the trick is to make them sound in the studio like they sound live, but make it work for the studio, if that makes any sense.  It's a different mindset for the singer, and most can adapt to it right away.  I will say that Cheneweth's Lion Tamer is sung in a completely open and honest way, in a voice I've never really heard from her since.  I wish she'd do a whole album singing the way she did on that track.

DRTPunk, fantastic news!  Maybe I'll start giving them money again.  After their "gala" of my Cole porter show, JUBILEE, I vowed to never go near the Gay Men's Health Crisis again.  Herb Ross is a pig, may he rot in hell, and the GMHC folk drove me crazy by their bad casting (with the late great Mr Ross, ptui!)

All right, I've bought this Liquid Paper Dryline Grip; it's pretty good, since there's no paper strip, but it's bad because it doesn't want to work with anything but a ballpoint pen, and I'm using indelible ink and felt pens.  But it's a great solution for the most part.

She's heading toward becoming the next caricature voice, like Channing, for the millenium.

DR Jennifer, I got THE FORGOTTEN off STARZ! movie channel, so it'll be the theatrical version or nothing. Thanks for the warning. Several other friends who saw it at the theater were less than satisfied, too, but I wanted to see for myself.

If you want after you watch it I can tell you the alternate ending (with spoiler space).  And the one deleted scene i noticed made a very distinct impact.

All right, I've bought this Liquid Paper Dryline Grip; it's pretty good, since there's no paper strip, but it's bad because it doesn't want to work with anything but a ballpoint pen, and I'm using indelible ink and felt pens.  But it's a great solution for the most part.

Oh gosh. I'm sorry. I always use ballpoint so that didn't occur to me.... I hope the headaches are gone at least

Btw, I did like the Forgotten.  It was quite tense and entertaining.  I just like things to make sense to me.  I know there are a lot of movies that use elements that are not real.  But it makes it harder to accept when they change the rules near the end.

Anyhow sorry for being vague. You'll understand when you watch it.

This article about manners at the theatre reminded me of what happened last week at MAMMA MIA.  Now I like kids a lot.  But I have little patience for people without manners at the theatre.

Anyhow there were a lot of kids at the show.  And most of them were very well behaved.  But there was a little girl sitting behind me (maybe 6 or 7). And i could tell that she was going to aggravate me.  It seemed like her parents had not prepared her about the story of the show.  Or told her how to behave (not to talk...).

Well in the first 15 minutes, she asked so many questions, made so many comments, it was just driving me crazy.  So i quietly turned around to her father and asked if he could please ask her to stop talking since i could not hear what was happening on stage.

He did. She stopped. And that was that.

I turned around and thanked him (although i thought he might be annoyed at me).  I did feel bad, even though i said it nicely.

But IMO you need to tell kids that they cannot talk BEFORE the show starts.  I'm guessing nobody else would have asked her to shut up.  And she would have ruined the show for everyone around her.

I greatly appreciate the help you and DRVixmom gave me! I never even knew of this gizmo until now.

As I work, I've been listening to CDs; Mr Guy Haines' fabulous song from THE COURT JESTER lured me into listening to the Varese Sarabande recording of the songs with HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN.  Now I'm listening to SONDHEIM AT THE MOVIES; I think my faves are "What Can You Lose?" and "The Glamorous Life."  I'm rather proud of that.

On a sadder note, fashion designer Donald Brooks, who designed PROMISES, PROMISES and ON A CLEAR DAY died recently.

DR Jason - Oddly, the only time the memory of the rat movie posters came back to me were when I was walking from the creepy, dingy subway area to my aunt/uncle/grandma's lovely bungalow in Far Rockaway.  I associated them with the neighborhood.  The rat posters were everywhere in that area for weeks, plastered several posters across and several levels down.

But thanks for posting this rat poster - it solidified for me once and for all that I've gotten over it.  Much cheaper than therapy.

Thanks for the link.  I think the remark by Don Summa showed how clearly he missed the point.

He thinks the no candy/ no cell phone/ no talkig request is solely fore the benefit of the actors who will lose their concentration and be unable to act?  I guess he is one of those ignorant imbeciles to whom it doesn't occur that the other audience memebers may have attended in order to actually hear and see the actors perform,

I was at a performanace of Phantom about 15 years ago when a middleaged guy with a pretty young thing on his arm,  sitting a row behind and across the aisle from me,  was loudly explaining how the special effects were achieved

Everyone around him tried giving him the evil eye, then then quiet "sssshh" sounds to no avail.  Finally someone said to him in as loud a tone as he was using "Moron. we didn't come here to hear YOU!!"

He finally shut up.

Good morning, fellow Dear Readers.

Last night the desert was treated to a lovely monsoon storm. First a huge wall of dust blew through the city. Then came the flashing lightening and the booming thunder and RAIN. This morning, the desert is soggy and the air is very humid. The skies are still gray -- but it is only 75F outside! So I went for a walk. Nice day for a walk, but bad skies for photos.

Jason - the kid with the amazing legs?  You must be talking about Heather Spore in the Miss July costume, right?   She was the talk of my office after they all came to see the show.

Actually, I assume you're talking about either Brad Coolidge (dark hair) or Jonathan Richard Sandler (blonde hair).  One day, the director sat down next to me and said seriously "We're thinking of getting one of the guys' shirts off in the Spring Break number."  They tried it once and basically decided it would be TOO distracting.

RonP: My loverly P.A. suggested a "new" (new to me, anyway) expectorant/decongestant pill that is WONDERFUL! It's called Musinex. There's also Humibid. Apparently I'm the last singer/actor in New York to hear about these medications. They're both available OTC.

While they're working on a book scene in the other room...

Ah, Mucinex and Humibid!  I discovered these products a few years ago during a gig at Ford's.  We were going through one of those periods where once person got sick we all started getting sick...

What I love about both products is that they basically just treat one symptom.  The active ingredients in both products are what are found in products like Robitussin and other cough/cold/allergy formulas, but without all the other ingredients meant to treat related symptoms.  Sometimes you just don't get the related symptoms.

FJL, between Ben the Rat, Gentle Ben and Benjie the dog, I got so many name jokes that I stopped hearing them after a while. I guess because Ben is not that common a name, though it seems to be making a comeback, people pick up on it. No offense taken   ;D

Well... There was one time in high school where I somehow ended up with 21 different nicknames.  21!  I even wrote the list down once in my journal.  Some of the nicknames were just special names between me and one other person, but some of them caught on among my circle of friends in high school.  Alas, some of the nicknames were not exactly endearing at the time, but that's high school for ya'.

Yes, that happens quite often to me with songs. A few Bollywood ones come to mind.

I have said on several occasions that "The Glamous Life," "What Can You Lose?" and "I Remember" are my favorite three cuts on that CD.

Donald Brooks designed all those sensational 125 outfits for Julie Andrews in STAR! and netted an Oscar nomination. Wasn't he nominated for his designs in DARLING LILI, too?

Well, the trick is to make them sound in the studio like they sound live, but make it work for the studio, if that makes any sense.  It's a different mindset for the singer, and most can adapt to it right away.  I will say that Cheneweth's Lion Tamer is sung in a completely open and honest way, in a voice I've never really heard from her since.  I wish she'd do a whole album singing the way she did on that track.

BK, have you heard her brand new solo CD...the one with "Taylor, the Latte Boy" and, as she called them, "Jesus songs?"

Remember when AIDS first reared its head and all the fundamentalists who claimed it was God's wrath on Gays for their "sinful" lifestyle?

You think this spate of boy scout and scoutmaster deaths by eletrocution and lightning might be God expressing his displeasure that the Scouts have banned Gay Scoutmasters?

Love Stanwyck and Lake.  Love Joan Bennett.  Love Constance Bennett.  Love Teresa Wright.

MBarnum, Guy thanks you and wishes you'd write an amazon review already.

I'm sure there is lots of Legrand I don't have.  I used to have a huge number of his import soundtrack LPs, very few of which are on CD except in one or two track samples (as on the four CD best of Legrand set).

Haven't heard the new Chenoweth CD.

Dear reader Laura, you do realize that if anyone is doing a google search on "test" or "cock" they will find haineshisway.com.

This may indeed bring in quite a few new Dear Readers -- or maybe Dear Lurkers. I wonder if they will ever tell us how they found us.

We're back from the doggie delivery.  Sadie is a lovely fawn and white pit, who recently gave birth and is having serious problems with her uterus.  Der B and I never learned what happened to the pups.

Sadie needed help getting into our car, partly because she was afraid, but once I got into the back seat with her she calmed down.  Within ten minutes she had a smile on her face, glad to be away from the SPCA.  I gave her scritches, which she enjoyed, and she slept part of the way up to Smyrna.

The young woman who met us at the park admitted to being new to the rescue operation.  She and der B chatted while Sadie and I went for a walk.  Sadie was so happy to be someplace where there was grass.

I helped pick her up again, to put her in her rescuer's car.  Her next stop would be a vet's, to take care of her womb and bring her back to health.  I felt sorry for her, but glad to know she was in good hands.

On our way to picking Sadie up from the SPCA, we received a call from my bosses at the market, asking if I could come in and help out.  I had to beg off, and they understood.  Sure, I'm missing out on some extra pay, but this was worth it.

I was watching the remastered twilight zones and one of things they have is a ten second promo. On this particular episode it was  for My Sister Eillen. Did anyone ever see that show? Ruth was played by Elaine stritch. She really was really beautiful

In between episodes of The Twilight Zone.

I watched Steam Boy. From the director of Akira.

What a wonderful animee. It took 10 years to make.

Amazing work. Better than any Disney/Dreamworks of recent vintage

DRMichaelShayne, I loved the series "My Sister Eileen."  It didn't last long, as I recall, and I believe it's the series that gave me the impulse to read the original stories. I hadn't heard the musical then.

Good Evening!

Back from rehearsal... Another good day.  And a bunch of went out to the Thai place for dinner afterwards.  *There are basically only three choices of cuisine here in Williamstown: Thai, Indian and Sandwiches.  ;)  Apparently, there is some Mediterranean/leaning heavily towards Italian place nearby, but we haven't tried it yet.  One of the guys when asked what he would do when he got back to New York City in a few weeks responded: Eat Mexican!  ;)

In any case...

I took pictures!  So...

Here's the composer, Curtis Moore, and the book writer, Joshua Scher:

And as for the heat... The Lobby of the Marriott Marquis is still my favorite place to chill out - literally - in the Times Square area.  -Although, I do miss the rotating lounge on the Eighth Floor.  -And they're still working on the new elevator system too - but the escalators are fun.

Oh...  DR Danise's mention of Tower Records reminded me of something that I saw last week at Tower...

In the Vocals section, there was a display of Nancy Lamott CD's.  In particular, they were featuring "Nancy Lamott: Live at Tavern on the Green".  On the front of the CD, there's a sticker with the following text: "Her first new CD in eight years!"

Well... Since she's been dead for eight years...  It actually kind of disgusted me.  I knew that Midder Music had sort of dissolved for a while, but "things" came back together again recently.  I figured that after all the "stuff" that went on, that someone would have to know that putting "First New Recording in Eight Years!" on the CD would/could possibly come across as crass and cheap.

:-\

And Mizer and Moore have got to be the handsomest male writing team ever!

BTW, did I mentioned my b.f. works for Curtis Moore on some musical theatre project?  :)

Trivia (and where else could you find trivia about Mizer and Moore):  Tom Mizer played Steve (named after the star of the TV show, whose name actually was Steve) in the phenomenally successful Blue's Clue's tour not that many years ago.   When the show played Radio City, Mizer's face loomed over Times Square for several weeks, IIRC.

AH!!!!  That's where I know Tom's face from!!!!  I remember him from the promotional materials for the Blue's Clues tour/show when Disney was hosting a production down at Disneyworld.  *And there were actually some nice songs in that show - and I still regret not making copies of the audition materials from that round of auditions.

Had a nice evening out with my NYC traveling companions. We went to a Mexican restaurant here in town called Salsa. I ate way too much. I usually have my major meal in the early afternoon and either don't eat at night or eat lightly, but knowing we were all having a bon voyage dinner tonight, I had just a snack for lunch.

We came back to my friend's house and had Cookies 'N Cream ice cream for dessert.

Hope all that food doesn't keep me awake tonight.

After dessert, we went up to my friend's home theater I helped install back in January, and we watched PHONE BOOTH. Neither of my traveling companions had seen it, and even though I had, I enjoyed seeing it again.

Hopefully, our sojourn in NYC will be a little less frenzied than Mr. Farrell's in the film.

Many thanks to all and sundry (or sunmoist) for the vibes today.

Am feeling better.  I've even watched a couple of Disney films on DVD...."Toby Tyler," which retains all the charms I remember from seeing it as a boy in its first theatrical release.  It still brings tears.

And then "Summer Magic" which is a pleasant bit of fun with pleasant songs and a lovely old house you couldn't buy today for under $1 million in some parts of the country (under $2 million in a few "prestige" locations), but which Hayley's family were renting for $60/year.

Ah, the 1960s!  (or, in the movie, those "ragtime" years).

Ain't the movies grand!!???

Good Evening!  Good Morning!

I went ahead and headed out to catch tonight's directing project.  It turned out to be at 11:30 instead of 11:00...  -There's a LOT of late night theatre going on up here.  And I think a lot of it is held late at night so the temps are cooler, since many of the smaller performance spaces do not have air conditioning - including the space we were in tonight - which is actually where the piece I'm working on will be...  Ah, well...

Tonight's presentation was Bertolt Brecht's The Exception and the Rule.  Interesting piece.  Lasted just over an hour.
Title: Re:I'M DANCING AS FAST AS I CAN

Well, it's a bit warm and humid up here in Williamstown too.  However, I'm kind of used to it.  I lived for three summers in Richmond with no air conditioning.  After that, heat is just heat.  It happens.  It may not be comfortable at times, but it will always get cooler.  Eventually.  ;)

The Sugar Sydrome with Gaby Hoffman finishes up this week here, and I hope I can catch a performance on Saturday.  On the Razzle just opened tonight.  Michael McKean is starring.  If there are enough empty seats, I may just catch both shows this weekend.

Hi All!
Well I made it to Portland. A much longer trip than it should have been. As we boarded the plane in Denver the flight attendant said "Hurry everyone we're trying to beat the oncoming thunderstorm" What a comforting thing to hear!

Anyway, we didn't beat it and spent 1 1/2 hours sitting on the plane at the gate.  I'd rather do that than be in a thunderstorm, so no complaining, but it did  make for a long flight.

DR Jane - I am at the Hilton Exectutive Towers - its kitty-corner from the Portland Hilton.

This morning I got the call that my new Prius was in - so I managed to get there, do the paperwork just in time to drive to the airport.  I LOVE IT! It is so much cooler than my old Prius.

It's been a long day, but I may have to wander down to the bar and see some friends. I ran into a few when I got here, but decided to go to the room and check the internet for a little while

Last night's viewing was AFI's programme from last year (I think) on 100 Greatest Film Songs - strange (to me) criteria.

Tomovoz, I made myself a very complete (I think) booklet for the CD that you sent me (assuming that the information that I got from different places is all correct).  I kept your endcard just the way it is.  Would you like me to e-mail the two Word document files for the booklet to you so that you can have one, too?  The cover that I made is 2 megabytes, so if have dial-up it might not work...or just take a very long time to download.  Let me know. ;D

I hope that means you enjoy the show as recorded - despite the subject matter which upset so many people.
