I saw Come Back Little Sheba last night. I think it's quite wonderful. S. Epatha Merkerson (born Sharon Epatha Merkerson) has gotten deservedly good notices. The production has gotten mixed reviews, some loving it and some saying the play is dated and tired. The two tiresome women sitting next to me were in the latter category, although they didn't become tiresome until intermission and the second act. I hoped as they got up near the end of the intermission that they would be leaving. No such luck. They didn't like the show. That's all well and good, believe me, I've sat through some bad theatre in my time. I've also sat through bad theatre that other people thought was wonderful. It's all a matter of opinion. But these two were BORED out of their (very tiny) minds by this unbelievable play.
"People don't behave like that"
"Well, maybe they did or do in the midwest but it doesn't happen here"
"I was so bored I tried to go to sleep!"
"It's painfully boring"
Well, honey, if you're so unhappy, go home and leave us alone. Unfortunately, they decided to go down to the refreshment que about five minutes before the intermission was over. They purchased a cellophane package of peanuts which they brought back to their seats. They decided to open said peanuts after the lights went down and Act 2 began. I do think part of the fault here lies with Manhattan Theatre Club for selling cellophane packages of peanuts at intermission so thoughtless idiots who shouldn't be in a public setting to begin with can buy and eat them. They got many looks every time they rustled the cellophane and chewed the f***ing nuts. They finally got the message but not after one of the dumb as a box of rocks women decided she needed to wash down her peanuts with a long and loud swig of water from her bottle. I kept hoping she and her friend would choke on the peanuts but my thoughts went unanswered.
Anyway, I do think the production was excellent. The set was beautiful and the cast was excellent. Merkerson as Lola was a standout but Zoe Kazan as the boarder, Marie, was a real treat. I do think the play is a period piece but if done well, it still works and can be very powerful. It was well directed and beautifully performed. Kevin Anderson as Doc (Lola's husband) was marvelous and pulled off the confusion, anger, despair and fear in his character. The scene where he returns after falling off the wagon was dynamite. I had seen parts of the film but I never read the play so I'm very glad I was able to see this production.
-
I saw Passing Strange on Tuesday and it's, well, passing strange. It's a very well produced rock concert. It has a through line and some very good talent but it's not to my taste. At times it's painfully loud (it is rock music after all) and with a light wall as part of the "set", it's so bright I had to close my eyes! I wish Stew well with this project (it began the New York run at the Public Theatre after a production in Berkeley) but it's not for me. It got fairly good reviews, both off and on Broadway but all the reviews that praised it stressed that you can't go expecting a "Broadway musical" I agree. You can't use this to introduce someone to Broadway musicals because if they then see something more mainstream there will be confusion. I stress again, it's a very well produced ROCK concert with a through line. The songs tell stories, they just don't advance the plot or add to the story. At one point in the show, Stew, who narrates, says something to the effect that "we needed a big happy musical number here to tell the story but we don't know how to write one"
Peter Filichia (http://www.theatermania.com/peterfilichia/index.cfm?date=20080305)
in his column from March 5th writes about this very line and I agree with his sentiment. I don't want to trash the show because in some ways it is innovative and fun. Granted, my ears hurt when I left, but it's not one of those evening when I felt, "here's two and a half hours of my life I'll never get back"
-
I have a ticket for Cry Baby, the new musical based on the John Waters film and done by many of the people involved with Hairspray.
I also have a ticket for In the Heights (last row of the balcony in the Richard Rodgers/46th Street Theatre).

Last spring I nearly went crazzee myself on a theater binge in NYC. I vented enough on that already, but one new distraction=the sale of H2O, in clear plastic bottles, which pick up the light from the stage. Thursday morning greetings! It's very spring-like here in SW Ohio this morning - hard to believe just one week ago we were anticipating the big blizzard of 2008!
Jacqueline Winspear (author of the Maisie Dobbs mystery series) gave a delightful presentation last night. She didn't read from her new book ("I write 'em, you read 'em," she said.) She talked about the aftermath of World War I in Great Britain and how women's lives were impacted.
It's a good thing her talk was so good, because my experience at Books & Co. was NOT. This is a formerly-independent store where Richard and I have been shopping since it was a strip-mall storefront before DS Rob was born. It's now owned by Books-a-Million and has opened a glitzy second location. Last night's program was at the old location, where they've drastically reduced the program space and installed hand-me-down chairs. It was uncomfortable and hot.
Book service was lacking, too. I had no intention of buying the newest book (#5 in the series), but was prepared to buy #'s 3 and 4. Not only did they not have any copies of #3, the clerk informed me that the only Winspear title in the store was the newest (hard cover, of course). I had a paperback copy of #4 in my hand and had just come from the shelves, where there were multiple copies of the first 2 books in the series. I bought nothing.

I must hie.
Whether or not there are additional noses in the house when I return, I'm certain either der Brucer or I will comment.
I think der Brucer needs his head examined!
The "additional noses" in question belong to a pair of Lab mixes - a small 55lb male named Wiggley and a "robust" 90 lb female named Hoopie.
Back story is that some women is the victim of spousal abuse and needs to vacate her present surroundings for now - she says she only wants a 60-90 day temporary home for the dogs. The dogs are neutered and up-to-date with shots and will not attempt to climb fences.
I had planned for her to bring the dogs down here at noon for an introductory visit (she keeps hers outside and bring ours out one at a time for a sniff and snarl meet and greet. But then I realized that if she wanted to leave the dogs, I would be confronted with bringing them both inside by myself - that would be chaos! Woody gets off work at 3, so I've reschedule the visit for 2:30 so he can be home in time should we attempt to keep them.
The main problem I foresee is feeding time. Seems the male will eat what he wants and then walk away from a bowl; the "robust" female wants to eat all the time. Our dogs have one dinner bowl, and expect it to have food whenever they choose to nosh. We can easily feed the newcomers from their own bowls in a separate room, but I'm not sure about keeping them from commandeering our tribe's community dish.
I guess we play it by ear - if the six can co-exist for a hour or so the rest can work itself out. We always have the basement kennel in a crisis.

Was listening to Ben Bagley's "Leonard Bernstein Revisited," and noticed in the liner notes a very prominent thanks to our very own DR elmore3003!
Mr Bagley, oy! A funny man, but a very sad one, and way way way too cheap on his recording budgets so there was never time to fix any wrong notes from the players. Working for him was hell because he was so cheap - of course I can say nothing about his recording period before I got involved in the early 1980s - but socially, he was charming, funny, a bit crazy, and a lot of fun to hang out with. He really should have spent his last years writing a biography.
Good morning, all! I'm feeling quite lethargic today and I really didn't want to crawl out of bed.
Still, I have Toyland work, and I need to tackle the window blinds today.

Favorite "insanity" movie is THE SNAKE PIT (though the ending is not very satisfying).
Favorite prison movie is CAGED. I think it's an outstanding movie and resented Warners putting it in a camp movie DVD box set as if it were a B-movie title.
And I also loved OZ as a television series on HBO.
-
As I mentioned last night, I have THE SMILING LIEUTENANT cued up to watch this afternoon. That is, unless something to review comes in the mail today. And even if it does, unless there's an expired street date to it, I will put it on hold until tomorrow.

As for the Topic of the Day...
Yes, "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest".
However, I don't think I would ever place "Ordinary People" in this category, especially since the two "crazy people" are already out. But, I guess in some sense you could call that household of three a "looney bin", but it's certainly much more than that.
-
Oh, and stage-wise, there's always "Women Behind Bars". ;)

Another wonderful sequence in a movie that's otherwise not about the insane is in THE NUN'S STORY where Sister Luke assists in a mental hospital and comes up against a schizophrenic played by Coleen Dewhurst, one of the most harrowing sequences in film.

Not a fan of "Billy Rose's 'Jumbo'"?
In the "Circus on Parade" number, Jimmy Durante says the word in one of his lyrics.

Of course, the way Durante pronounces things, it might be hard to "hear".

Concur with JRand's choice of "Suddenly, Last Summer". It's a doozy and the sanity of Liz Taylor's character remains in question most of the way through. Nice twist at the end. I love this movie!
If I had to choose a "prison" movie, I guess "Papillon" is close enough to be one.

"Suddenly Last Summer" is so evil and humid- and torrid- it's perfect! Mercedes MacCambridge (and whoever played her weak son who wanted Sebastian's clothes) is also wonderful in it. Taylor is pretty much her usual Taylor, but the rest is great. Violet and Sebastian. Sebastian and Violet! And the the great dark birds!

In the last batch of Fox's "Marquee Musicals", we got a nice Amazon price of $14.99 on "With A Song in My Heart" and "Bloodhounds of Broadway" but for some odd reason, "The Girl Next Door" was a few dollars more at $17-plus.
I have pondered this ever since the release. I did not buy the June Haver musical film (that I had never heard of until its release) simply because the price was NOT right.
Today, it's a Gold Box offering. Today, it's $9.97. The other two titles are now listed at $10.49.

I have never had anything work as well as Protonix.
Boy, do I agree-the stuff is great. The only downside to these medications is they can interfere with the absorption of vitamins. I am waiting for the results of a test to see if I'm absorbing calcium.
I figured out why I might be paying more, my prescription is for 45 pills a month, for those times I need an extra one at night. I rarely have to renew them every month.

Some thoughts about "American Idol" (No SPOILERS)
1. Am I the only one who cringes each time they bring back an AI winner/finalist for a "special performance"? Last week's Blake Lewis number was a travesty. It's inconceivable to me, at this remove, that he ever made it into the top 12. And last night's Katherine McPhee song -- I believe Simon would say, "predictable and boring." Poor thing. She needs to concentrate on an acting or TV-host career and leave "singing" alone. Perhaps a church choir needs a middling soprano somewhere.
2. Big WOO on the "new stage". Lots of wasted energy/green-unfriendly lighting.
3. What's up with all this arm waving during numbers? I know it started at rock concerts, along with the flicking of BICs. But must EVERY routine AI song be accompanied by camera shots of the now-obligatory arm waving? It's simply nausea-inducing, given the lack of any "appropriate" reason for it.
4. Do we really have to wait 10 more weeks for Carly Smithson to walk away with the title?
-
Just a few short years after The Caretakers was shot, our very own Jane would be working at the Bruin.
Gee, BK....this sounds like Jane was an aspiring actress who went from a movie set one day to working as an usherette the next!

To be fair, I thought David Archuleta was terrible. I know that popularity counts for a lot, but David Hernandez was MUCH BETTER than Archuleta...even though both weren't particularly good.
And I don't care what anyone else thinks: Kristy Lee Cook rocks! That song was very agreeable for the C/W spin she put on it. It was a bit too C/W for my tastes, but it "worked", despite Simon's hypocritical stance that it didn't translate. It was as viable for C/W as Amanda's was for a southern juke joint.
Paula is totally out of her mind/out of control and someone NEEDS to do something. She's a disgrace to the Fox Network (IF that is even POSSIBLE), and certainly a national disgrace to be so visibly drugged-out on a show that draws more viewers than any other.
Simon seems on the verge of having it out on network TV with her. They've had some ugly moments the past week, and Paula blames Simon when it's truly her fault.

Where in tarnation IS everyone?

I'm getting hungry, but shall wait to eat until Mr. Redman is gone. In the little mini-mall where I get my mail, they've just opened up a cupcake place - fresh cupcakes every day - I had a peanut butterish one last week and it was deelish.
-
Will we never get to page five?
-
I'm not hungry at all today. I decided I should eat so I'm cooking some oatmeal now.

Best of luck with these two new dogs! VIBES to the woman! I hope she gets her life back, and her dogs.
The female was very agressive towards Buster and it clearly was not to be.
Wiggles, on the other hand, was a love-fest:

He let me push him throught the doggie door both ways, but has yet to so do it alone (he did discover that the yard is for peeing and pooping).
I put a dish with food in the newly cleaned out crate in the Dining Room - said "Wiggels - Kennel" - and in he went.
He is now napping on the hall floor.

Turned out just as beautiful as forecast. I did wear a long sleeved shirt, but sicne we were inside for lunch, I had no need to roll up the sleeves. It's quite cool still inside the house, so the long sleeves are still welcome.
-
When I got in from a late lunch, I put in THE SMILING LIEUTENANT and watched that DVD. Brother, neither Claudette Colbert nor (especially) Miriam Hopkins could sing much. So happy neither wanted to persue a musical career.
The ending of this movie has always been a surprise. You're primed for Chevalier to end up with one woman, and he ends up with another. I'll bet folks at the time were surprised, too.

I didn't have enough time left to start on another movie and finish it, so I put in a CSI: MIAMI disc from Season 3 and watched an episode. This was the one that introduced patrol officer Ryan Wolf to the show, always one of my favorite episodes and a smashing introduction for his character to join the CSI team.

Another prison movie I love (which I mentioned just a few days ago when we were talking about Burt lancaster) was BRUTE FORCE, one of the greats.

We're STILL on page four?
We're trying. . . .
-
I watched a truly great dvd last night. . .oh, nevermind, that's TOMORROW's TOD. :-[
-
. . .and STILL we're on page four. >:(
-
Today's mail brought the review copy of SWEENEY TODD (streets April 1). It's a two-disc set, so it's loaded with featurettes. I'm not going to start on it until tomorrow afternoon, and I think for a change, I'll watch the bonuses in the afternoon and the film at night (after it gets dark, so I can better judge black levels on the disc.)
More silly publicity stuff. The disc came on an aluminum pie plate surrounded by red excelsior and covered with the PR material printed on a round cardboard lid with the liner notes on one side and the movie logo on the other.
-
I listened to Liza Minnelli as VICTOR/VICTORIA yesterday.
I also listened to Judy Kaye as Lily Garland in ON THE 20TH CENTURY yesterday.
-
. . .and STILL page four.
I listened to Anthony Newley's soundtrack this morning and this afternoon.
-
We are really trying to get to page five. . . :-\
-
SUCCESS! ;D
-
I won't be doing any skimming of AS THE WORLD TURNS today or tomorrow. The ACC Basketball Tournament has taken over the airwaves for four days here. I'm assuming that the local CBS affiliate will record the two episodes and play them at some time this weekend. I'll do a search on the DVR to see when they're slated to show. It should pick them up since I have the show on a Season Pass.
-
As for the film I watched last night, and I do believe that DR MBarnum has also seen it:

Wiggles and the gang look happy :). It is a shame the two have to be separated, but at least the "robust" female has a place to stay and you shouldn't have a problem leaving the food bowl out.
How you don't have a problem, or even have leftover food, still amazes me. In my experience that only happens with one dog in the house.

How you don't have a problem, or even have leftover food, still amazes me. In my experience that only happens with one dog in the house.
Marty and Mikey were both raised with "open bowls" - we used to go away on trips and leave them for days at a time with vats of food and water.
Bonnie and Buster were youngun's we we got them and just fell into the habit. Fletcher, on the other hand, is much fonder of foraging for food stuffs then emptying the bowl. If the bowl is empty, he'll just go stick his big fat face in the 40 lb bag of kibble and snack - if you are foolish enough to seal it, he will chew the bottom corner off and make a real mess! Putting the food into a plastic container doesn't work either - he can open them quite well.
Marty was the custodian of the food and water bowls - when one got empty he would bang it a few times on the floor - if that didn't work he would carry to you and throw it at your feet!

So Matt, I'm curious...what do you do with this "silly publicity stuff"??
Just askin'.

Give it away mostly, especially if it's kid-related. My best friend John has two grammar school kids who enjoy some of this stuff.
-
Off to tidu up a bit downstairs before watching something very special before the start of prime time TV.
WBBL.

... and you shouldn't have a problem leaving the food bowl out.
But unlike DR Ben and DRJoseSPiano, Wiggles and gang never wash their bowls and put them away.

With so many dogs in the house it must be easy to miss that the water bowl needs filling.

Have you ever had one of those days when you feed the fish and then trim some plants and forget that you put the fish food into your pocket until you get home and discover that the lid came off and now you have a pocketful of fish flakes?

DR Matt, enjoy yourself tonight! You've got plenty to watch! ;)

Years ago, I was fotunate to buy the hardcover editions of HOLLYWOOD BABYLON AND HB 2. Over the years, friends borrowed both volumes and eventually they were lost, or at least, never returned. So, I was very excited a few years ago, when Border's Books in Tacoma announced that Kenneth Anger would be signing copies of his books. I thought this would be a great chance to replace the copies I had lost. Unfortunately, when I arrived for the signing I found Mr. Anger signing only a small stack of the paperback editions. I bought them both , and he signed them; but it just wasn't the same as having the large hardbound editions.

Just a quick note to let you know I am in Green Valley, but my suitcase is touring the country on Frontier Airlines. Don't know if it will be here soon - there's a possibility it could be on the 3:00 Pm flight from Denver. They'll call and deliver if it arrives. Otherwise I'll be buying clothes.
Other than that - we're having a good time.

Gotta sign off. More later.

Hey guys...nice to see you again. It's been too long.
I have a question for anybody who knows a lot about "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." I have always loved the movie, but have never seen the show. When the movie was shown recently on TCM, host Robert Osborne said of the film: "Some of the cast may have stayed intact, but there was some tampering actually done to the show itself. At that time, Hollywood was still inclined to dilute sophisticated Broadway content to make it more accessible to movie audiences. So this movie version isn't quite as hard-edged as it had been on the stage."
Echoing this sentiment, IMDB says that the Broadway version of Finch had a lot more 'edge' to him. "The movie producers felt they had to make him nicer for the movie in order to be more likeable to the audience."
The movie Finch is such a charming and funny guy! Can anybody give me specific ways the character was different onstage, or how the overall tone of the movie was more "hard-edged"?
Thanks!
Brett

I'm going to hear her again, 2 weeks from tonight at the Audio Publishers Association dinner in Minneapolis. There will be, potentially, 500 people at that event, so I'm glad I saw her up close and personal last night.
The other speakers at the dinner are audiobook narrator Scott Brick and audiobook producer Dan Musselman.
And I have reason to believe that attendees will receive "goodie bags" ;)
Ginny (or any other audio book fans) - were you familiar with Anna Fields who died tragically last year? I have heard people say that she was one of the best.

Yes, I was going to post about it, but I forgot. I remember meeting him when The Abbey Players (a local theater group that no longer exists) did Anything Goes. I wasn't in that show, but I knew most of the people who were (Jeff Kingsbury directed it). And I think that we might've been in some show or revue together, but I can't remember if we actually were. I haven't heard anything about him for years, so I assumed that he moved away.

FYI: Even though the dates on the right say that there is a performance on Sunday, March 23, we do not have an Easter Sunday performance. We had to sign a document stating that we were told that there would not be a performance on that Sunday. They moved the matinee to Saturday, so that there will be the same number of performances.
-
George, if you think about it, sometime could you ask Jeff if he knows what happened to Buzz.
Certainly! He should be there tonight.

Having done How To Succeed twice (playing Finch), it depends on how you play him. There's really almost no difference between the movie Finch and the show Finch - they did drop Coffee Break and Paris Original (I think) from the film, and I think Rosemary had a bit more to do in the film.

OK, thanks. Well, in addition to those, they also cut Cinderella Darling, Happy to Keep His Dinner Warm and Love from a Heart of Gold.
I wonder what they're talking about with the supposedly "hard-edged" original production? Weird.
-
DR RLP - I hope you took advantage of the Gold Box and got Girl Next Door....for 8 dollars less than I paid.....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
It's fun, and the extras are interesting.
I listened to the commentary on BLACK WIDOW last night by Mr Alan Rode. Mostly it was a list of the films of the various people. He touched on Gene Tierney's problems and read a paragraph or two from her book. And he added a couple of interesting items about the film itself.
Much publicity was made about a $2000 dress that was made for Ginger Rogers and there are several pictures of her in it, but it isn't in the movie. Seems to have been a scene in her dressing room that didn't make it.
Rode has a big problem with names - Bea Benaderet becomes Bea Benaderek.
And I don't think this is right:
Skip Homeier - he pronounces it as Ho-mee-ay
Virginia Leith - he pronounces as LYth....I don't think either is correct.
He also points out a combination of a location shot and a studio shot that just wasn't possible....the cab pulls up and Heflin gets out. The cab wasn't shot in NYC....couldn't have been. No cut, no dissolve, no traveling matte.

Good Evening!
I got to play for the wonderful Harvey Evans today! :)

In other news, I started developing a headache around 5:00, so after I was done with the auditions, I just headed on home. Thankfully, my headache is starting to go away. I think I just mis-timed my meals and snacks and water breaks today. We shall see. Otherwise, it was a pretty cool audition session. I thought it was just going to be the final auditions for prospective Jane's and Michael's for Mary Poppins, but as I was packing up my bag I was informed, "Oh, there are still more auditions to play for." Oh!, OK. -And that's how I ended up playing for Harvery Evans. :)
-
DR elmore - Brad and Ashley send their best. :)
-
Did you say hello to Mr. Evans - we like him very much.
-
How To Succeed was, in its day, considered a hard-edged satire of big business, but the film is pretty similar in tone, if I remember correctly.
The first time I did the show we had quite a cast:
Me as Finch
Mike Lembeck (Harvey's son, and now director of the Santa Clause sequels) as Frump
Annette Cardona (aka Annette Charles aka Cha Cha in the film of Grease)
Linda Hart as Smitty
and Kenny Rogers' then wife, Margo, as Hedy.
-
And that production was a college production!
-
Will we never get to page eight?
-
I'm going to finish watching a motion picture I TIVOd.
-
DR RLP - I hope you took advantage of the Gold Box and got Girl Next Door....for 8 dollars less than I paid.....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I did get it! :)
As for commentaries, I'm always wanting to believe the folks who do them know exactly what they are talking about. Sometimes, though, the research doesn't seem to be all that thorough with them.
I don't know how Homeier or Leith pronounced their names, but I'd like to think I'd have heard something other than "Ho-myer" and "Leeth" after all these years.
-
Frump....LOL....I'm going out for a smoke.
He's going out to call his mother.
-
Linda Hart as Smitty
Wow, that's an inspired bit of casting!
Oh, wait, I'm thinking of Linda Hunt.

I did get it! :)

"American Idol" chatter ahead...
She was the performer who I thought had performed her song better last night, than during her initial performance. I actually went back and compared the two performances, and she really was off a half-beat for most of the time on Tuesday night. Her toe was tapping down when it should have been up - or something like that. She was never "in the pocket" on Tuesday night. *It also sounded like they adjusted the audio mix to help her out during the elimination show, more bass drum, and less kick (more "boom", less "chick"). ;)
And, yes, David Archuleta was so not good this week. His cuteness really carried him. However, when someone "good" has a "bad" week, that usually ends up helping them in the long run. The "public" tends to start taking good performance after good performance for granted. Now he can stage a comeback.
-
Well we can just start calling him Skippy Ho-mee-ay and see how many people correct us.
Virginia of course is most famous as Jan in the Pan in THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE.
Rode mentioned he had been trying to contact her for a book he was writing on Film Noir, and she was MIA.....

It was quite something, when I walked into the house post-workday, to find five faces looking up at me, one of them fully black and curious as to what was happening. Wiggles is indeed a doll a boy's pose-able action figure.
He immediately knew that the line-up for doggie bisquits was to include him, and what "sit" means.
He's still unsure of what these new surroundings mean for him. So far, there have been no fights, at least no negative ones - I don't count puppy pouncing as negative.

I should try to get dinner on the table. I'm making another stab at fish and chips.

And I am awaiting a call from Jason to let me know when to come over and meet the newest Iraqi arrivals...Maan and his wife Hoda, 5 year old son Mustafa and 2 year old daughter Hiba.

Just be glad you're not living in New York City.
After his first new conference where he admitted to having done "something", the coverage was non-stop. Heck, the ABC affiliate even pre-empted "Oprah" for a full hour of "continuing coverage". Of course, since the 5:00 news follows "Oprah", well... Then came two more hours of coverage. UGH!
Having "continuous coverage" of two two-minutes statements is just plain stupid.
Of course, now that the "girl" has come forward with her sob story.... OY!

LOL-I thought of that as I made my last post. I don't know who the replacement would be.
Since I don't remember voting for one, I looked it up..
"If the office of governor becomes vacant, the office passes, in order, to the secretary of state, state treasurer, president of the Senate and speaker of the House of Representatives. There is no lieutenant governor in Oregon."

Nor here.

'night!
-
Larry, when are you thinking of going to GLASS MENAGERIE? Maybe you and Skip can go together.
I hadn't settled on a date. i'd love to go with Skip.
-
Is anyone as tired of this Spitzer news stuff as I am?? Before all of this I had never even heard of him, and even if he were the Gov. of Oregon, I wouldn't not care so much about it.
Maybe it is just me, or maybe I just don't like his face. I don't know.
I can't believe you ever get near a news broadcast so they must be interrupting your viewing. Besides, Spitzer's not your type.
-
Of course, now that the "girl" has come forward with her sob story.... OY!
It's tough being a whore.
-
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![/b]
*Yes, that was about "Lost" - and there's still 10 minutes to go!! ;D

It's right up there with the Des episode from two weeks ago. ;D

Seen it I have! What did you think of it TD?
To be perfectly frank (not Loesser, though), I thought it was one of the best films of 2007. In any language.
-
Seen it I have! What did you think of it TD?
As a matter of fact, since I didn't mail it back to Netflix yet, I may just have to watch it again.
-
...and just how many "What the F***?" moments did we encounter tonight? ? ?
There was one of those moments in every segment.
-
DR td - Nevermind.... ;)
-
DR td - Did "Kevin Johnson" need a "SPOILER WARNING"? ;)
I don't think so, but, I'll modify.
-
DR td - I don't think you have to modify.... However, you may consider deleting post #248.
-
DR td - I don't think you have to modify.... However, you may consider deleting post #248.
We don't need no stinkin' post #248.
-
And now that I've modified my posts, you may want to modify the "quote" box in the "new" post 248. ;)

And maybe your "Spoiler Warning" in #242 needs to be fyeuhwoiufhdfdisguisedxbetterjoaiuoaiufdf.

Does ATWT show on the SoapNet? And do you have access?
-
Isn't that a Lerner and Loewe piece?
Soon to be back on the boards, in a revisacle with a updated book by John Guare. (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/115844.html)
I'm not a Brigadoon fan, but this news is very saddening.
-

The only CBS soap carried on SoapNet is "The Young & The Restless".

Better small than sorry. :-\

It was already "sad" when it was announced a few weeks ago. ;)

DR MBARNUM re: BIG BROTHER
I'm still watching.
For once, i actually agree with you. I think my favorite right now is Natalie. They keep editing her as dumb. And she does have a thing for matt. But she has a good energy and doesn't seem as malicious as most.
I want her to win HOH (well i already who won, but i won't spoil it).
-
I don't know how I feel about this BRIGADOON situation, but why do people who object to revising musicals with the consent of the writers' estates seem to have no problem with revising Shakespeare and Moliere and such?
-
Good evening all. Can someone tell me why it's 10:45 and I just got home from work?
-
And I worked until 9:30 last night...

I know, too....and I HATE the deal that was struck. I think Natalie IS malicious...and not a little bit looney tunes. I don't think she is as ugly/evilene as Sheila, who also is playing one HELL of a game...but they all make me sick to my stomach in one way or another.
It's very troublesome for me this season: I don't like any of them, but I still get worked up when someone "plays" someone else and then gets nasty about. Matt is the major ugly boy in the house. I would love to see him go.
And I am so delighted that Alex did not get back into the house. It was worth the scam on the fans (i.e. telling us we'd make a difference and then finding that our "chosen" player might not get back into the house after all). If they'd known it was Alex, James would not have had a chance.
-
I will be leaving early every day next week to compensate.
-
Hmmm, I am 1/2 way thru LOST and now i'm excited to go watch the rest.
-
I got cast as Mimi and a Hot Box girl in Guys and Dolls. Can anyone tell me who Mimi is?
-
Miss Patti made patties.
-
And speaking of patties, just where in tarnation is dear reader Jeanne?
-
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![/b]
*Yes, that was about "Lost" - and there's still 10 minutes to go!! ;D
You're killin' me!!!!!

The fish in the fish and chips came out better than they have before. I changed my batter recipe - it's now one cup wheat flour, one cup corn starch, one tablespoon baking powder, one bottle beer, some salt and whatever other seasonings seem appropriate. Nice and crunchy.
But der B still wasn't happy with how the oil hadn't really drained from the fish. I need to work on that.
And the chips were limp. :-\

Good Evening!
I got to play for the wonderful Harvey Evans today! :)
And I've been busy watching the wonderful Harvey Evans this evening in a couple of productions. So great.
-
Mr. Waggles is on the floor right behind my chair. I really feel sorry for him, torn from his familiar surroundings, no matter how friendly we are for him.
I should get to bed. I may have the day off tomorrow, but that doesn't mean I won't get called in.
Maybe we can teach Mr. Waggles how to cuddle on the bed.
And, after that, Fletcher can teach him how to drink from the toilet bowl! :D
-
And Eli Stone had a good episode tonight, as well.
I like how those visions Eli keeps having are proving to be interesting metaphors for the rest of the story. Unusual for a series to find these visual hooks, and keep them consistant yet fresh.
-
I missed every one of those songs dropped from the film version of HOW TO SUCCEED. "Paris Original" is one of the funniest sight gags in the show, and I loved "Cinderella, Darling."
I do think it was very smart decision in the movie to give Rosemary (especially with Michele Lee's singing) a version of "I Believe in You." Added a nice touch of real romance to the show that is later parodied as Finch sings it to himself. That may be one way that the movie is a bit softer in tone than the stage play.
-
But one last thing before I go...
IT'S OFFICIAL!! My refinancing went through! My original 30-year mortgage is paid off!! I won't have to start making payments for my new (almost 2% lower) 15-year mortgage until May!! ;D
Congrats George!
-
Does ATWT show on the SoapNet? And do you have access?
I have access to it, but it isn't carried on SoapNet.
However, doing a search of my cable guide helped me locate that the two missing episodes will be broadcast during the early morning hours of Sunday and Monday and the DVR had marked them for recording, so I will see them. There were do Luke and Noah mentions in the program summaries, but that doesn't really mean anything.
-
Have to type quickly I've been cut off the wireless I'm on a couple times...
In a nutshell - still no luggage. Bruce the Frontier Agent has been very nice and helpful...but still not suitcase.
Went out and bought my own underpants tonight...this is becoming a theme in my life.
I bought some clothes at Wal-Mart. Ok, it's Wal-Mart, but I found some jeans that fit and a couple tops that will carry me over until I get my clothes
-
I began my evening watching a TV special I hadn't seen in many years and I thoroughly enjoyed it, more than when I watched it originally. No more will be said about it other than thanks to the person who made it possible. He knows who he is.
-
I am wearing my mother's nightgown as the clothes I wore today are being washed. I feel really goofy in her nighty
-
I watched the pop-up LOST at 8. Great information this week (reminded me of things that happened in Season 2 which I had forgotten). Sorry not to see these any more.
-
Echoing DRs Jose and td, LOST tonight was an astonishing episode with surprises, revelations, and MORE mysteries to explore. How can this show keep surprising us every week like this? Brilliant, one-of-a-kind storytelling, and among the best ever.
-
I loved ELI STONE, too. One of the best episodes yet for the show (I hate this love triangle they're launching), but that's the only negative in an otherwise top-notch hour of television.
-
I recorded SMALLVILLE for watching tomorrow during lunch.
-
And, yes, "Eli Stone" was very good tonight too! :)
-
So... My roommate, Jim, just got home... He's currently watching "Lost" via the DVR... And he keeps stopping every now and then to comment on the show... And/or to ask me a question about something... And I just keep telling him, "DON'T ASK ME ANYTHING ELSE UNTIL THE END OF THE SHOW OR I WILL END UP TELLING YOU WHAT HAPPENS!!!!"
;D
-

Can you say, "New Avatar"?
;D

The Chips Were Limp - that's the title of my next novel.

Good evening all. Can someone tell me why it's 10:45 and I just got home from work?
Did you accidentally set your clocks back one hour instead of ahead this past weekend? ;)
-
I gotta tell you.
-
Listening to Harry Nilsson's soundtrack to Skidoo.
-
To be perfectly frank (not Loesser, though), I thought it was one of the best films of 2007. In any language.
You will have made John Abraham very happy! The movie got cruddy reviews. I thought it was not bad....it could have used more song and dance numbers, though.
-
No writing to do tonight, so I'm free to head downstairs to bed at a decent hour for a change!
Good night!
-
Forgot to do a Page Ten Dance!!!

Hmm... That seems like an awful lot of corn starch... Hmm... Have you tried rice flour?
As for your limp chips... Are you doing the double fry? with each fry at a different temperature? Maybe you're fry thermometer is not accurate and/or needs to be recalibrated?
What type of oil are you using? Vegetable (soy)? Peanut? Sunflower? Crisco? Lard? *Some of the most amazing potato chips I've ever had were fried in lard! -Are you frying the chips before or after the fish? Having you tried "brining" the chips beforehand? Sometimes a good soak in salted water helps to extract some of the water from the potatoes, making them more prone to crisping up. I've also seen many a chip recipe that calls for splashing the potatoes with vinegar beforehand, then letting the excess vinegar - and water - drain away in a colander.
From personal experience, I've had pretty good results from chilling the cut potatoes in the fridge, and heating the oil a little higher than normal, then lowering it back to "normal" after the chips have been frying for a couple of minutes.
*Although, my favorite type of "fries" lately have been broiled fingerling potatoes that have been prepped with a good splash of olive oil, salt, black pepper and rosemary. They get all crispy on the outside, nice and creamy on the inside.
-
And now I'm REALLY going!
;D

BK - Actually, I think "Drained From The Fish" would be more appropriate. ;)

My roommate and I have been steadily progressing through season 1 of Veronica Mars. It's soooo good!
-
Visited the new Iraqi family...they are now over at Walmart shopping with Jason and his in-laws.
When they all left I went down to the Kawari's apartment and visited with him and his family. They had a very upsetting incident the other day at the bus stop where some high school kids (who evidently go to the same school as the Kawari kids...and therefore know that they are from Iraq) stopped there car and accosted the whole family with some very foul language.
Mustafa (the dad) is quite stressed about it, and is very worried about his family's safety. I tried to reason with him that these were just bullies and not to take it personally or seriously...but I know it is easier said then done. I know that no one is going to harm them or the kids, these kids were just jerks. But it was such a shock to the Kawari's because up to now they have been treated so nicely by everyone. They are very used to being concerned about there safety, so it is difficult for them not to worry about such an incident.
I really hope those teenage thugs die. I am very angry about the whole thing and I felt helpless in consoling them. Why must people go out of there way to hurt others. I will never understand it.
-
Ok, I don't really hope those thugs will die...I guess.
-
TPunk, congrats on winning the role of Mimi. I don't know who that is either...but I am sure you will be swell as her!
-
My roommate and I have been steadily progressing through season 1 of Veronica Mars. It's soooo good!
I was very sorry to see it go after Season 3. But then Kristen Bell showed up on Heroes, and all was right with the world again...

So true!
I have seen season 3, but my roommate had to keep filling me in on all the back story from seasons 1 and 2.
-
You will have made John Abraham very happy! The movie got cruddy reviews. I thought it was not bad....it could have used more song and dance numbers, though.
You know what? At first I thought something was missing by there not being more musical numbers, but as the film progressed, I didn't find their lack to be a debit. I just thought that the characterizations, especially Mr. Abraham's, were more than enough to keep the film moving. I actually threw my slippers at the screen when Sunny signed the papers and hated the character for quite a while thereafter.

What an unfortunate and scary incident for them. It sounds like you did your best to console them, but I imagine it will take them a long time before they will be able to let go of their vigilance and worries about safety. I doubt that any amount of reassurance on your part will keep them from viewing this as a serious threat. It will take time and more interactions with kind and open-minded people such as yourself.

I have to get up at 7:30 tomorrow to be at work early and take an agency car up to connecticut. My roommate/co-worker and I are presenting at an LGBT conference on creating a safe space for LGBTQ kids in residential care. It should be fun. Except for the getting up before 8AM part.

To bed!
-
Larry - we'll give you a call tomorrow about possible dates for seeing GLASS MENAGERIE.

Welcome sixteen GUESTS.

All right, since there's no one here but Jose and I, I'll start the new topic - hold tight.
