Petula Clark - Downtown

Peter O'Toole - three way tie:

                         Lion In Winter
                         Becket
                         Lawrence of Arabia

der Brucer

I'd mention Petula's great "Easy Terms" from Blood Brothers, but I think one pulled tooth/week for Tom is enough.

Hi!

I'm finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.  And it's not an oncoming train!!  Thanks again to all for your care and concern and vibes and good wishes.  It's nothing compared to what our dear Debra is going through, but it was something I wouldn't wish on anybody.  And no, it was not brought on by peanut paste, but by Chinese takeout. So far as I can tell.

Anyway, enough about that.  It is good to be back amongst my favorite people.     :)

Dear DAW, I'm so glad you are back among us! Food poisoning is miserable. I had it one time when I was working in LA from a restaurant on Larchmont. I wonder if you had shrimp in your chinese food? That's what got me. I've had it several other times and always when I was far from home, working, but the LA one was the worst because i HAD to work; we were only out there for a few days with a producer and director and there was no way I could not have worked. While I was in the worst throes of it (of should I say throws?) my mother called to tell me my beloved Grandmother died so I had to fly straight to Ohio to the funeral after the job. On top of that I got a cold and had to fly; I thought my head would explode and I couldn't hear for 2 days!

Good morning, all! I have to make an emergency run to Toyland this morning before stopping at the pharmacy to pick up my meds. The rest of my day, and probably a lot of the next several days as well, will be tied up with 2008 taxes.

Happy Birthday, DR Michael Shayne!

Yesterday was peculiar; I spent most of the afternoon feeling puny and wondering if I were coming down with something. Around six, I decided I felt okay and I spent some time working on the Rodgers & Hart show SPRING IS HERE. When I called that quits, I watched PSYCH and went to bed.

I had one strange dream last night: I was over at the 82nd Street Barnes and Noble, and someone was holding auditions for some film so several clerks were auditioning. The store hadn't opened yet and I was asked to work at the cash register area till some workers arrived. when I left the store, I was walking up Amsterdam Avenue from 68th Street but I'd lost my shoes so I needed to find a shoe store. At that point I was walking down Central Avenue in my hometown looking for a shoe store so I stopped into the wonderful Central Pastry and looked at chocolate cakes, I didn't buy anything but suddenly I was driving down Central Avenue and I saw a shoe store sign. I woke up.

re: ugly betty and abc pulling it off the air for a few months

I personally never thought that ABC had given up on the show. it's a good show and gets them praise.

However for a class show, i think it stinks. ABC IMO has shown poor judgment lately cancelling shows like Eli stone and pushing daisies.  So it just fit that they would screw around with another one of their good shows.

I understand why they want to try thurs night for their new comedies. But once you take a show off the air for a while it doesn't mean the viewers will stick around.

I'll have the afternoon to myself and then once it gets dark, I'll watch FRIDAY THE 13TH Part 3 in 3-D. I think the 3-D may work better in a completely darkened room. At least, that's how I'm going to handle it. Then, I'll have plenty of time tonight to write it up. Other than the 2-D version and maybe the trailer, I don't think there are any other bonus features on the disc.

I saw Petula Clark in the national tour of SUNSET BOULEVARD and I actually liked her takes on the songs more than Betty Buckley's renditions which I saw in NYC. The Broadway production was, of course, much more magnificent in its opulence than the tour's sets, but as the show was not really great anyway, I just sat back and enjoyed Petula's performance.

The first time I met Petula was in Hollywood at radio station KFWB where she was signing 45s (I had my 45 of Downtown signed - heaven knows what happened to it).  Then I saw her in Las Vegas in the mid-1970s where she shared the bill with, if I remember correctly, Michel Legrand or Joel Grey (can't remember which, but most likely the former).  Then I met her backstage and then supped with her when I was thinking about recording Blood Brothers.  Then we did our album.  Then I saw her in Sunset Blvd. and we had a marvelously marvelous time at the little opening night party they threw.

I've always thought it was a good thing that Peter O'Toole never had much of a singing career.

It's even better that he never sang a duet with Lee Marvin.

I finally watched A Beautiful Mind all the way through last night.

I found it a well-made film, much better than I had thought it would be.  Ron Howard and his team certainly found ways to illustrate thinking and mental illness, neither of which are easy to do.

But it's not a great film, not the way Apollo 13 is a great film.  Apollo 13 told a fascinating story, and kept to the historical facts from start to finish.  From what I gather, Tom Hanks insisted on total accuracy in the film.

A Beautiful Mind plays around with the truth quite a bit, it turns out.  For example, Ronny's Nash says, towards the end of the film, that he's taking some of the newer medications.  The real Nash never did - once he quit the meds after leaving the hospital, he didn't go back.  Ronny's Alicia never left Nash.  The real Alicia divorced him, then remarried him much later in life.  Bits and pieces like that mount up, and start to bother me.

Has anyone heard if Frost/Nixon has accuracy problems?  Just curious.

Welcome back, DAW.  Of course, my bout with food poisoning raised nary a concern, but I'm not bitter, oh, no, I'm not bitter.   ;D ;)

MattH and other Ugly Betty fans--my post last night was only meant as a word of encouragement.  I certainly wasn't implying anything--I just thought fans would like to know that the executive producer at least thinks things are good to go. That's all.

I have officially filed both my Federal and State taxes. I did the Federal this morning on line with the new system. It was very easy and at least for now I know it's there. I will get an e-mail in 24-48 hours telling me if it's been accepted or rejected.

I downloaded and filled out the State forms (including my own personal bugaboo, the summary of my W-2 form). I filled them out on the computer (nice, neat printing, no scrawl of ink), filled out the bugaboo, printed them out and signed the tax form, addressed the envelope (also using the computer and including an address bar code), walked over to the post office and, along with my February rent check, mailed the envelope. I should have my refunds before I go to Wisconsin in March!

I then went to the Union Square Greenmarket and got some apples and some Bosc pears and a nice Cranberry Walnut scone for our breakfast tomorrow. We are now settled in and unless something comes up we will probably not go out again (even though it's a bright sunshiney day here in Chelsea).

That, and he could try tucking in his shirt.

DR SWW - "A Beautiful Mind" was never meant to tell the "whole truth and nothing but the truth".  The movie worked "better" if you read the real story after the fact.

As for "Frost/Nixon", I dont' recall reading about any major historical "vague-ing" with the original play, and since the movie script adheres to a good chunk of the original stage text - and the actual interviews, well...  Of course, in both mediums - and even in real life - the big turning point is still up for debate, discussion and conjecture.

I've always thought it was a good thing that Peter O'Toole never had much of a singing career.

It's even better that he never sang a duet with Lee Marvin.

In all fairness, O'Toole was equal to the songs that he was given to sing in GOODYBYE, MR. CHIPS.

Bedhead would never come out looking that unkempt.  ;)

And his shirt is supposed to be untucked.  -Which is greater improvement over the "half-tuck" style that was prevalent a few years ago.

Peter O'Toole - "My Favorite Year"

Additionally, with "Frost/Nixon" there are more "real people" in the movie other than David Frost and Richard Nixon.  I have a feeling if there were any issues with any of the plot points, we would have heard about them - and from them - by now.

The Topic of the Day:

Petula Clark - "Downtown" "I Know A Place" "This is My Song" "The Cat in the Window" "Tel Me It's Not True" "Color My World" all of both FINIAN'S RAINBOW and GOODBYE MR. CHIPS.

Peter O'Toole - LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, MY FAVORITE YEAR, RATATOUILLE, MAN OF LA MANCHA (throw stones, I think he's effective in it), THE RULING CLASS, CASINO ROYALE, THE LION IN WINTER.

It's been explained before: Facebook status updates on crack.  ;)

It's usually just best to log on and check out the Public Timeline:

http://twitter.com/public_timeline

And then a couple of personal profiles/timelines:

http://twitter.com/Starbucks

http://twitter.com/LATimes

http://twitter.com/NYTimes

http://twitter.com/waffletruck

http://twitter.com/MarkBakalor

Yes, there are some celebrities and fake celebrities on Twitter.  As well as TV characters.  There is a whole "Mad Men" community, as well as a "Lost" community - which I'm resisting. ;)

Check out the Followers and the Followings.  There are some Tweeps who think that Twitter has some hard and fast "Rules", but it doesn't.  Sometimes it's used to gain info. Other times to spread info.  Other times just to think out loud.  And there's even a chat aspect to it.

Bad news and good news in today's mail: the City of Middletown sent me a 1099 form for the property sale last year, which my accountant and I will have to explain to the IRS really isn't income but a gift of property from my dad's estate. I may have to dig through my canceled checks two years ago to find the estate taxes paid on the megillah.

Good news: my newly-released region-2 DVD of Benjamin Britten conducting the English Opera Group in a BBC tv broadcast of his edition of "The Beggar's Opera" from 1963 with Janet Baker, Heather Harper, and Kenneth McKellar. This is one great version of the 1728 musical, and if I were still directing, I'd do it in rep with "Sweeney Todd," since they're both ballad operas.

Firefly (not BD)
Serenity (BD)

I think it says something about der B and myself, that every movie that we've collected since Wall-E came out has been on BD, and every television series has been on regular DVD.

And who is this Nick Redman fellow doing commentary with Malcolm McDowell on Clockwork?  Should we know him from somewhere?

DR edisaurus - Shall I alert Richard Blais via Twitter that you will be supping at Flip tonight? ;)

We ended up having lunch there because several children were involved. We had a great time! Greg and I met Kathryn, our gardening show producer, my friend Kris (director of Ociee Nash) and her new boyfriend (I approve!) and my two Turner clients/friends and their children. Today is Kathryn's birthday so I brought her a present and some things for the kids, and Greg treated us all to lunch, which everyone agreed was DEE-LISH!

Greg took pictures of a few of the burgers on his camera phone for DR Jose so we have to see how to do something with those.

The decor was very nice and hte place was packed. I will definitely take my little French boy there when he visits next month.

Thanks for the recommendation. I told everyone that we rely on a friend in NY to find the best restaurants in the ATL!

As I watched the new episode of BURN NOTICE, I finished sorting up my tax receipts. It was a good episode but the person who does the previews for next week is a moron: it's at the point of the episode in which Fiona has trapped herself inside a burning building and during the commercial break, the preview shows her alive and well walking with Michael. While I had no idea how she would escape, I never knew if this potential disaster would be a carry-over to next week's plot.  It kinda spoiled my getting too involved with the remainder of the episode. What is it with these USA Network morons?

NBC was running skating exhibitions this afternoon which I really have little interest in (music choices are usually not to my taste and the technical difficulty is greatly reduced to minimize risk). They did rerun Alissa Cizsny's winning skate which did prove once again what a perfectly beautiful spinner she is. If she can just get more consistent in her jumps especially toward the end of the program where bonus points are a big help in keeping up the rest of the world's female skaters, she could perhaps do something on the world stage in March.

Today was quite productive. It was a beautiful day, it's still 44 degrees!  I had the windows open and the girls loved it.  I made it to Curves then after the usual errands, finished wall papering the basement hallway and primed the basement bathroom.   Tonight I'm going to a fundraiser and if I get home early enough, I may paint the bathroom.  I really need to get it done before the carpet is installed on Wednesday and I have a lot of office work to do tomorrow.  It's a small bathroom and will only take about an hour or so to paint it.  We'll see.

Fauxhawk?  I thought he just had bed-head.

That, and he could try tucking in his shirt.

Bedhead would never come out looking that unkempt.  ;)

And his shirt is supposed to be untucked.  -Which is greater improvement over the "half-tuck" style that was prevalent a few years ago.

I never understood that particular fad...

DerBrucer, I always love your birdfeeder pictures. Is that the same squirrel, or do you have several?

Do you buy suet cakes or do you make your own?

(We have at least six squirrels (max number I've seen at once). For most of the pixtures, I just zoom in one one, but there are usually at least one or two others romping around (One on the Bird Cake cage, one in the feeder, one at the corn cob and one on the seed feeder is not unusual. I buy suet cakes from Walmart for 98 cents. The Goumet Bird Cakes are almost $5, but they are by far the squirrels favorite - they love swinging while they eat; one bar may last three days. While they're eating the Bird Bar, the birds are sneaking corn and nuts out of the squirrel feeder.

DR derBRUCER - I have seen five at the most....usually the biggest one eats at the crock on the ground where I put the sunflower seeds, and the others watch from a distance.....they nibble on the bird seed under the feeders.  Once he's gone they fight each other to get sunflower seeds until everyone has had some.

The snow has made it difficult and haven't seen them for a couple of days.  I cleaned the snow away from the sunflower seeds and put plenty out, but the cardinals are enjoying them right now.

Homemade Suet Cakes

Melt 2 cups lard
Add 2 cups chunky peanut butter and melt together

In very large bowl, mix:
4 cups oatmeal
4 cups corn meal
2 cups flour
.5 cup sugar

Line a 9x13 pan with plastic wrap or wax paper. Mix all that stuff together and pat it into the lined pan. Refrigerate. Cut it into cakes that fit your suet feeder.

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

I'm up, I'm up.. And I guess my tea should be ready.  It's been steeping for almost an hour.  ::)

Don't steep in the subway, darling!

I did not end up "steeping" in the subway, but I did have to step very carefully during my trip downtown earlier tonight...

During the long stretch from 125th to 59th, I noticed one of the little boys sitting next to me suddenly bend over and started "coughing".  Well... He was doing more than coughing, if you get my drift.  He sat back up, his father looked down at the floor, saw the mess, asked his son if he was all right... And that's when the kid bent over over again, and... His father made sure to aim his son's head between his shoes...  Well, the kid sat back up... And then proceeded to bend over again... People started giving the father spare napkins and Kleenex to wipe everything up... I finally spoke up...

"Don't make your son puke on the floor.  Give him the McDonald's bag!"

Oh, yeah, that sounds like a good idea.

The father then proceeded to take out the half-eaten cheeseburger from the bag and the Happy Meal toy... His sisters helped to clean up their brother's face with the napkins that had been offered to them, and then proceeded to throw them on the floor complete with the "No one saw that look".  Then after his son "refused" to hold the bag, the father placed it on top of the mess on the floor of the train...

Thankfully, by that time, the train had pulled into the 59th Street Station, and I got off the train... ::)  :-\

That recipe seems pretty economical to me.  Where are you shopping?  Giant?  ;)

Are you sure there's no lard near the tubs of Crisco?

Of course, you could always buy some fatback and render your own.  Or just stop by a bodega for a container of manteca.

I was talking to a friend this afternoon and the subject of sweets came up. I remembered that I haven't had anything chocolate for over two months. Oh, how I long for something chocolate. Brenda Leigh Johnson has nothing on me!

Got some lobster salad from Gelson's for my light evening snack, plus I have some grapes for later.  I'm watching Cannery Row, a film I rather liked back when it was released but now a film that is making my teeth hurt.

I am on-line earlier than I expected. I didn't know how much time to give myself to write up my feelings about FRIDAY THE 13th Part 3, and I was over-generous in regards to time. ANyway, I should be able to get to bed earlier tonight after a long day.

I did watch both the 3-D and 2-D versions of FRIDAY THE 13th, Part 3. In the theater back in 1982, the 3-D worked very well giving a little sense of fun to the repetitive murder gimmick that by the third film had long since worn out its welcome with me.

The anaglyph system just doesn't work all that well here, and there is lots of ghosting instead of solid 3-D dimensionality. I haven't seen the film since 1982, but I was surprised how much I remembered. This was the last FRIDAY movie I ever went to see to review. I might have watched portions of Part 4 on TV, but I can't remember. They're all the same at this stage of the production of the sequels. I hope Paramount doesn't do any more of the deluxe editions for DVD release. I've had enough of them.

By the way, the 2-D version used a dated transfer that looked soft with blah color.

Before I headed upstairs to start on that review, I watched the first episode of MOONLIGHT (courtesy of DR JMK). A very enjoyable first episode. How I miss this show! I really loved the character of Mick St. John.

Tomorrow, my work project will be Criterion's next release: THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL.

And no, I don't plan to watch the Super Bowl. I didn't even watch it the year the Panthers got to play.

Um... Maybe I did.  And maybe I did.  ;)

*Yes, I know I most definitely "splurged" today, but calorically speaking, I probably came in just about "right".

Of course, you could always buy some fatback and render your own.  Or just stop by a bodega for a container of manteca.

Do you know how much fatbak you need to render to get 2lbs of lard! (Not to metion to cost of running the electric oven.)

No bodega in this part of the county.

Well I am home from a wonderful dinner with 7 of my friends from Florida, One had to bow out at the last minute as he got a job working at Disney in Orlando for the weekend and that right now is more important than a dinner.

It is a wonderful day and it is winding up. 26 minutes to go.

I received an email from my friend Julie in LA. We first met when she did he TV variety series in Montreal. She told me recently received several DVDs worth of episodes, Unfortunately not among them was my television debut where she sang a song to me. I l Love You Because You're Trash.

I am hoping the sketch I did with Henny Youngman is among them

Well... I thought the cookie was actually the richest of the treats I sampled today.  It really caught me by surprise.  I knew the cookie was made with butter and cream, but I didn't think I would actually taste all that butterfat right off the bat.

*But, yes, the anti-oxidants in the blueberries counteract any of the supposedly bad stuff.  -And, remember, it was made with all-natural butter and cream, not some hydrogenated, over-processed vegetable shortening. ;)

Sorry, no pictures.

DR Druxy - Good to hear that your reading went well. Do you have anything scheduled for the East Coast? NYC?

Nothing on the East Coast.  I'm going to do another signing in Los Angeles on February 27th at the A Different Light bookstore, then I have to concentrate 100% on the move to Austin.

I'm through with viewing.  I'd love to write another page or two (have done four, I think) but I just don't know.  It would be great to get to the end of the chapter I'm on, but that would require six more pages, so I'd have to do three more tonight and three tomorrow morning before I print out.  I don't know.  I think I'll take a shower and see how I feel after that.

Good luck at the auction. Don't spend too much!

I had a great time at the auction. It was for Girls, Inc.  It's a great cause.  I ended up with a basked with a DVD Lakeview Terrace (never heard of it) a bunch of popcorn stuff and an MP3 player.  I also got a basket with 10 tickets to see our local hockey team. No one else bid on it so I got it really cheap. When I started digging through it I found 10 Wal-Mart gift cards that are worth what I paid for the whole basket!

So, I had a good time and spent about what I wanted to.  There were a lot of big spenders there, I just watch them bid on the big stuff. I stick to the silent auctions where I have some control over what I spend

When I came home I painted the bathroom down the basement.  I normally wouldn't have done it that late at night, but I have so much to do tomorrow that I needed the paint to dry tonight.  In the morning I will hang the wall paper in the part of the bathroom that gets wall paper, clean up my mess and scrub the floor and that bathroom will be finished, for the most part.

I may put off cleaning out the new room until Monday or Tuesday.  I just have to get that done before the carpet layers come on Wednesday.

Then I have a ton of work to get ready for a hearing Monday morning and I have to do the laundry. So glad weekends are relaxing!

BK sent me a chastising email for not acknowledging my birthday wishes.  Sorry, I was in London for the past two weeks (during which my birthday fell) and came home Thursday to deal with an ice storm.  Belated thanks all for your felicitations.  More about London and the theatre scene anon.

Sorry, BK, for all its flaws, I love the O'Toole Goodbye, Mr. Chips.  Long been a favourite of both mine and The Lovely Wife's with whom I saw it the first time.  In mentioning terrific performances, you forgot Sian Phillips (then Mrs. O'Toole) as the divine Ursula Mossbank.  O'Toole is one of those actors who can do little wrong for me.  Other fav  O'Toole's are Lion In Winter; Lawrence of Arabia; Becket; The Ruling Class; My Favourite Year; Venus.

BK, you were thinking about recording Blood Brothers?  Why didn't you?  Did you decide not to?  Someone else said you couldn't?
