Well, you've read the notes, the notes were the laziest notes in town, and now it is time for you to post until the laziest cows in town come home.

Ack---I'm up, and caught up!

Saturday was a busy day, running errands all over Marietta, then going to the Decatur film festival to see a film Greg had worked on (we've seen it before but now it has a new score) and then meeting some preservationist friends over at the house of a cameraman I know who is taking on a massive restoration of his immense 1906 home, which is surrounded by an equally immense yard.

We spent about an hour touring the house. The folks had been there 5 years, but have spent most of those years stabilizing the house. It's amazing how many thousands of dollars they've spent, but you can't tell anything's been done! They are really doing it right---the house is lucky to have them. Most people would have bulldozed it and subdivided the lot.

I wish I had brought my camera, because after the house tour, we went acrosd the street to their friend's house, to see his garden. Wow!!!! I was amazed! This guy had bought his house 6 or 7 years ago. In that time, he had built a fabulous garden with lots of structures to house exotic birds, lizards and exotic fish. He had beautiful chickens wandering around the property, and un the aviarys there were all kinds of parrots, little quail, fancy phesants, and at the end of the property, a pair of very friendly emus. In the ponds were swans and fancy ducks. Surrounding the pond were very large metal sculptures--lifelike! A family of elephants who spewed water out of their trunks; an alligator lounging by one pond, an emu sculpture, life-sized, and one garden area was devoted to dinosaurs, including large metal ptyrodactyls hanging from trees. This part of town was hit hard but the hurricane, but if this garden sustained any damage, I didn't see it.

Post by: Edisaurus on May 26, 2008, 03:46:46 AM
The garden was made even larger when the owner bought the house next door and expanded in the back of the next door lot. The lots are very deep, so he has restored the house and will sell it with the smaller yard, which is still plenty big.

It turned out that the owner used to live across the street from Greg when  Greg lived a block away from the zoo. I used to hear this guy's big parrots screeching, and they would set off the peacock and other animals at the zoo. Apparently, dealing in rare fish and birds must be very lucrative.

The owner's college degree was in landscape architecture, so he has the best of both worlds. He gets to work with animals, which he loves, and then create this immense garden. Wow...he made me feel like such a slackard!

Yesterday, we decided to tackle some gardening after being inspired by what we saw, but mostly we were just removing vinca, violets and other stuff to prepare an area to relocate some irises I liberated from the chincy bassa's property before he destroyed everything.

Last night, one of the producers from the gardening show took my DH and I to see James Taylor in our outdoor amphitheatre. I've always liked JT...never had any of his albums, but my DH was a fan, so he was very happy he got to go.

JT was in very fine voice and had an excellent backup band and vocalists---12 in all, including his daughter. He was very generous to the crowd and came out about 10 minutes early from intermission to sign autographs and shake hands. He seemed genuinely appreciative of his audience. It was an excellent show with just the right selection of songs for the assembled crowd.

I never felt particularly moved, or excited by the music but it was enjoyable. One surprise was when he launched into "Oh, What A Beautiful Morning", with a very pretty arrangement and interesting chord voicings.

Whew!   As DRJOSE might say.  We have a newly painted house - all four sides.  We have repaired and reconditioned the enclosed back porch.  We have changed out ALL of the landscaping.  Cut down two trees.

We are done with the FRONT of the house....new mailbox and new posts on the front porch and new porch light....all dead and dying greenery dug up and gone.  New plants growing and thriving.

Just a bit to be done in the back yard, although everything is started.

Whew!

Chris Connelly and Gary Lockwood would be two good friends to have.  I remember Gary first from THE LIEUTENANT, a tv series, and as Cliff Macy in WILD COUNTRY, an Elvis movie, and of course 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.

Chris was Norman Harrington in PEYTON PLACE on tv....and he was great!  I even had his LP "The Boy From Peyton Place"....I am sure it is still around here.  He was a pretty good singer, and I think he played guitar, too.  :D

And just for the record, you - like DR JANE - may have already noticed the effects of this triple whammy:

Mercury stops (22 degrees of Gemini at 8:49AM PDT) and so does Neptune (25 degrees of Aquarius at 9:16AM). Both planets retreat -- Mercury until June 19 and Neptune until November 1. Mercury motionless places a special focus on communication, transportation, business, trade, papers, language, classes and learning programs. Neptune not moving emphasizes photography, film, video work, music, dance, theater, spirituality, religion, confusion, chaos and illusions. It is difficult enough to interpret the halt and reversal of one planet, but now three celestial bodies have made turnarounds in less than 36 hours. When uncertainty reigns supreme, you should count your blessings and refrain from making decisions and buying big-ticket items. Another key reason to keep your John Hancock off important legal documents.

or is he the documentary film maker

Errol Morris is hte documentary filmmaker.

BTW, he's collaborating on a film with a friend of mine who is a screenwriter (wrote the HELLRAISER movies, among others) on a non-documentary film.
My friend said he's wonderful to work with, because he leaves him alone!

Last night, one of the producers from the gardening show took my DH and I to see James Taylor in our outdoor amphitheatre. I've always liked JT...never had any of his albums, but my DH was a fan, so he was very happy he got to go.

I never felt particularly moved, or excited by the music but it was enjoyable. One surprise was when he launched into "Oh, What A Beautiful Morning", with a very pretty arrangement and interesting chord voicings.

Well, obviously we won't be seeing James in the role of Curly.

Cocktails in the Garden
Botanical Garden delights with Thursday cocktail series
By JIM FARMER
MAY. 23, 2008

WITH COCKTAIL SPECIALS and munchies on tap from some of the city’s most famous restaurants, the Atlanta Botanical Garden is a top destination each Thursday this season. Through the early fall, the Garden once again hosts one of its more popular events, “Cocktails in the Garden.”

The series combines a monthly cocktail theme with a specific plant. May’s theme is “Magnolias & Mimosas,” while future months will feature “Boxwoods & Bloody Marys” (June); “Lilies & Lemon Drops” (July); “Rock Roses and Red Rubies” (August); and “Cannas & Cosmos” (September). Besides the cocktails and hors d’oeuvres from each week’s sponsored restaurant, the Garden will also provide a DJ and music each Thursday.

It’s a concept that began several years ago and has grown in numbers and frequency. “We used to have what we called ‘Moonlight Strolls’ once a month, which was basically an opportunity to have an evening event and let patrons see all the plants at night time,” says Atlanta Botanical Garden spokesperson Danny Flanders. “That has now evolved into the ‘Cocktails in the Garden’ series which last year became weekly.”

The event attracts a diverse crowd. On any given Thursday night, attendees can consist of straight and gay younger professionals, families, college students, singles and couples, Flanders says. The event has become a place to go for social networking

Here's an Evening Primrose review from Film Score Monthly:

Evening Primrose (1966) ****

STEPHEN SONDHEIM
Kritzerland KR 20011-6
14 tracks - 35:12

Can you consider an album a holy grail if you never even knew a CD release was even possible? The grail in question is the soundtrack to “Evening Primrose,” an episode of the TV series ABC Stage 67, about people who reject the world and hide out in a department store—and like the perils of window shopping, I didn’t even know I wanted this CD until I saw it. This is one of the few TV projects for Pulitzer-, Oscar- and Tony Award-winning composer Stephen Sondheim, and was an enigma for the longest time. The only song I knew of as a young Sondheim fan was “I Remember,” which showed up on various compilation albums. A more substantial recording appeared on Mandy Patinkin’s eponymous album in 1990, as a four-song suite performed with his Sunday in the Park With George co-star Bernadette Peters. This expert recording by two top-notch Sondheim interpreters felt like the best alternative to actually hearing the original recording. But then came an even longer presentation of the songs in a studio recording by Neil Patrick Harris and Theresa McCarthy on a Nonesuch release, paired with an equally obscure Sondheim show (at that time), The Frogs.

Now, producer Bruce Kimmel has taken the last step, unearthing the original recordings from the television series and releasing them on his own indie label. As a historical document, this album should be owned by any serious theater fan, especially since the episode will never (or I should say, probably never) get released on DVD. Then you can add in the fact that this album features not only the songs but also the underscore written by Sondheim himself (a rarity for the composer for any filmed versions of his work). So, even if the performances and the quality were shoddy, one would still be happy to have such a release. Thankfully, the sound quality is pretty good for a release over 40 years old, and the performances, while not overwhelming, are pleasant.

Based on a short story by John Collier, the musical starred a post-Psycho Anthony Perkins (who would later collaborate with Sondheim on the screenplay to the movie The Last of Sheila) as Charles, a poet who has given up on the outside world and comes up with an ingenious idea to live in a department store. Ingenious, yes…original, no, as it turns out there’s already a band of people living this life in the very same department store. Charles falls in love with one of them, Ella (played by The Sound of Music’s Liesel, Charmian Carr), and when the young girl expresses a yearning to visit the outside world, he must not only overcome his own misanthropy, but a group of Twilight Zone-ish men whose sole purpose is to uphold their secret society. Written by James Goldman (who would later collaborate with Sondheim on the musical, Follies), the mini-musical was one of 26 episodes of the low-rated ABC series. Sondheim was already choosing unconventional material to musicalize for his solo projects, a technique that would become his trademark. However, the TV series came after two high profile flops on Broadway, and four years before his groundbreaking show, Company.

Considering the history, hearing this transitional score is quite informative. Highlights include the defiant “If You Can Find Me, I’m Here,” which Charles sings as a farewell to his old life; the reflective but unsentimental song, “I Remember,” which lists everything Ella recalls about the outside world before she was adopted by the society; and the deceptively hopeful love song “When,” where Charles sings to Ella: “Ella, poets who suffer pain/Should fall in love with girls named Jane/Not Ella.” The final number is the wistful “Take Me to the World,” in which two sheltered people decide to finally take control of their lives.

Sondheim’s underscore is lovely and (towards the end) menacing, not only adapting the songs into the score, and even offering a quaint clarinet duet for a dance sequence.

Since this is a limited pressing, soundtrack lovers will have to compete with musical theater fans for the 3,000 copies. As complete a release as one can hope for, Evening Primrose is an astonishing accomplishment, both for the young Sondheim way back in 1966, and for Kritzerland in the present. —Cary Wong

I watched a bunch of FUGITIVE episodes this afternoon.

One of the more interesting ones took place as a juvenile detention home. Among the inmates was Ronny Howard. What's funny about this is that he was not named as a guest star at the beginning of the show (Edward Blinns and Brett Somers were), but at that point he's made a bunch of movies and been co-starring on THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW for years. He was better known than either of them.

I've had the best 3 day weekend ever. I've been by myself almost the whole time, no plans.  Just hanging out, working on the house, doing a little shopping, hanging out with the cats and getting some sleep. It's just what I needed.   I did go to the office for a little while today. I have a hearing at 8:00 AM, so I needed to get the file so I can work on it a little tonight

So...

As I was heading out earlier to meet up with my friends, I checked my phone and noticed that I had missed some text messages:  "I'm running late." "We're running late."  "I need another hour or so."  So...

Around that time, one of my roommates came home from visiting her family in Ohio, and since she's flying back to China tomorrow - for work - and since Jim was here this morning too, we all just hung out for a while chatting, catching up on the DVR, relaxing.

Then once everyone was ready for "brunch", which by this point and time had turned into a very late lunch/early dinner, I went ahead and headed on down to the Village.  Some of us grabbed a slice of pizza, some of us got a falafel or schwarma, and other just got some baked goods - since they had already had lunch in the meantime.  Then we headed over to Washington Square Park to grab a bench and/or table and sit down and enjoy our food.  Well, we tried to grab a bench and/or table.  Washington Square Park is in the midst of a major(!) renovation right now, and most of it dug up and fenced off, so...  We managed to find a few free spots to sit down and eat.  And then since it was so relatively late in the afternoon, most of us had to head on to other places to meet up with other people, do other things.  So, I headed on back to the apartment...

And after napping for about two hours... ;)

DR JRand - Ah, painting.  When we lived in Arlington, I would regularly repaint my room every year - if not twice a year.  I think I was addicted to the paint chips/strips.  ;)  I even went through a "graphic" phase where I would paint geographic designs.  Alas, most of the time, my colors were not "ideal" - the hardware section of the PX always seemed to be out of the proper base for the colors I wanted, so I usually ended up with the next shade "down".  Everything still looked good, but the colors never popped the way I wished they would.

Whew!

My goodness! Are you sure you're not Cillaliz?

Oh no!

I met him when we premiered S&V at the Full Frame festival a few yeats ago. He had a documentary about architect Frank Geary, a friend of his, in the festival. It was a beautiful film about Geary's work and creative process in general.

Mr. Pollock was very friendly and seemed to be having a wonderful time.  :'(

DR Jose, I wasn't able to meet the actual owner of the garden, but now that we realize that Greg knows him, I'm sure we will be seeing him again. I am going to tell my other gardening producer, who is the gardening columnist for the AJC about him. It would be a wonderful story. He is a private person though, so I wouldn't want him to feel that his privacy would be invaded.

And, it sounds like he is single...

And his friends estimated that his garden might be 2 acres.

I came home and watched two more episodes (the remaining two in the set) of THE FUGITIVE. In the first, Kimble hitches a ride with Warren Oates who's wanted for robbery, and he gets thrown in prison and, of course, recognized by the sheriff. Madelyn Sherwood played the local town telephone operator. Strother Martin was also in the episode.

The last one featured Janis Paige as a dying singer hooked on morphine. Obviously to not have to pay music rights royalties, some songs were cut from the original broadcast for this transfer since the show ran two or three minutes shorter than the other episodes in the set.

Not a too-bad experiment in cooking tonight.  Poached chicken breasts (poaching liquid used for cooking the rice, of course, augmented with onion and carrot).  And, as a sauce for the chicken, mandarin orange with orange juice, grated ginger and coconut.

So did the dogs, what they got of it, but that doesn't reflect on der B's tastes.

Evening Primrose (1966) ****

Since this is a limited pressing, soundtrack lovers will have to compete with musical theater fans for the 3,000 copies. As complete a release as one can hope for, Evening Primrose is an astonishing accomplishment, both for the young Sondheim way back in 1966, and for Kritzerland in the present. —Cary Wong
